NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2008 GMC Acadia. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The car would not shift causing me to pull over on the side of a highway to restart the car this happened 5 times in a row b4 the car would shift into proper gear
Lift gate closes by itself I have to put a pole to hold it up and it won’t hit me, it says the air bags needs to be serviced, stabilitrak keeps going off, ball bearing needs work. Radio won’t turn on no sound on air signals, the body chasis something popped while driving, the tracking control keeps turning off, the seats move while driving, catalytic converter are moving car only go 12 mpg.
The traction control turns on and then the shifts don’t work and I can’t drive since there is no speed also the rpm and the gas the speed and the battery gages start flickering up and down then I turn off the truck and it continues to work fine but after 40 miles or so it does it all again
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while her daughter-in-law was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made a popping sound, and then the fuse box near the passenger's side headlight caught fire. No warning light was illuminated. The contact's daughter-in-law was able to exit the vehicle. There were no injuries, and medical attention was not received. Bystanders called the police and fire departments. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. Police and fire department reports were filed. The fire chief informed the contact that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. The vehicle was towed to the residence and had not yet been deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Transmissions will not shift out of 1st gear. And puts out a 752 code. This can happen at anytime. Vehicle will suddenly lose power at any time.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that the battery had previously been replaced; however, the battery failed to retain a charge. The contact had to recharge the battery every day to start the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that water had leaked from the windshield and cowl to behind the glovebox, causing the battery to fail; however, no repair was recommended. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
Deer hit me on the highway at 2am on December 26th. No air bags deployed.
UNKNOWN 2008 GMC ACADIA back lift starts to open and then shuts right back down. try to raise it manually and it falls right back down. It can really hurt someone. would like to know what causes it to do that and if there is a recall.
Airbag light on 24/7, ABS malfunction traction control system turns off randomly, wiper blade fluid not spraying (front, rear) engine misfire on idle, clear/white smoke from hood and burning smell.
Started losing power and had problems cranking. Now won't cranking at all. P0123 error code.
The contact owned a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, a grayish-colored smoke as well as an abnormal sound emit from the engine without warning. The contact pulled over and exited the vehicle as the vehicle was quickly engulfed in flames. The contact called the fire department and they extinguished the fire. A fire report was filed(#23-046145) and no injuries were reported. The contact stated that the highway barrier was damaged as a result of the fire. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where it remained in their possession. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was deemed a total loss. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Check engine light came on for the TCM. Car has had issues shifting (very rough shifting) and the manual shift option does not work. Was told the TCM had to be replaced. Attempt was made to replace it with a refurbished TCM but that couldn't be programmed to the car. Was then told I would have to buy a brand new one, which is very expensive, and that there was no guarantee that would fix the problem. Car can not be driven over 20mph without risking burning up the transmission. Car also jerks forward very hard when trying to gently accelerate.
Head gaskets and engine default and ground wire system defaulted.
The air bags light came on with no reason truck never being in a crash, the abs and the off road light is on too, the break lights are on while you don't step on the pedal and they go off when you step on it...
The headlights don't work even after replacing. It rains in the vehicle from the sunroof. The gas tank isn't registering even after fixing it. So the engine doesn't know how much to put out etc etc and it makes the car jerk horribly. This vehicle is a fire hazard due to raining inside on everything upfront. I have kids I pray nothing happens!!
Well my back trunk doesnt worrk well i open it but it closes half way it almost closed on me and its done that more then 3 times and im not sure why its scary cause my child almost got hit with it not opening right.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The vehicle had previously been serviced at the dealer under NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 14V118000 (Air Bags) and 15V415000 (Structure) however, after the recall repairs were performed, the rear springs fractured. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he noticed that a section of the rear spring was on the ground. After inspecting underneath the vehicle, he noticed that the rear springs were fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer informed the contact that the rear springs needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,572.
It was in a front end Collision the airbags didn’t deploy my insurance said they totaled the car out due to needing a lot of money to fix it and I contacted gm about it they said there was no recalls and no repairs were don’t to it
Turned key to start,it did not.mechanic said timing chain failed.
Vehicle has a sunroof drainage issue. Water leaks in through the corners of the sunroof and spills into the dashboard and under the carpeting. The vehicle has suffered electrical damage, corrosion, and mold because of the sunroof drainage issue. I have seen forums with hundreds of other owners who have suffered the same exact sunroof drainage problem with their 2007-2008 GMC Acadias. GMC says my vehicle is not listed in the recall, but I find that laughable. There are way too many Acadia owners that have this exact issue for it not to be a problem with all Acadias.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the power steering assist failed, and the steering wheel locked up. The contact's father, who is an independent mechanic, diagnosed that the power steering assist and rack and pinion were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 147,028.
SunROOF IS CLOGGED RAIN HAS GOTTEN INSIDE VEHICLE SOAKED UP THE FLOORS THE INTERIOR UP BY THE SUNROOF. GMC MADE RHIS MIDEL HORRIBLY AND THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE FILING OR JUST DON'T CARE. IT MESSES UP THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THEY NEED RO RECALL THE SUNROOF. RECALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ALONG WITH IT. SUNROOF IS CLOGGED
Liftgate Malfunction: When rear liftgate is manually opened on vehicle, it continues to make a noise after it is completely opened. This noise sounds as though the liftgate is still in the process of opening. There is also an issue when closing the liftgate. Although it is properly closed, it will show a warning sign moments later in the car saying it is opened. When the car is put back in park to check, the liftgate is closed, but the latch has released. So the liftgate is able to be opened without pressing the button to open it. Sometimes it can take a few times of closing the liftgate for it to stay latched and properly closed. The automatic opening function of the liftgate does not work as well.
Warning message appears on dash showing windshield wiper fluid is low/empty when it doesn't need it. This warning message remains lit even when the fluid has just been refilled.
Passenger Airbag warning light has been showing on my dash since I purchased the vehicle in October of 2021. I brought the vehicle to an auto repair shop to have it checked, and was told that the airbags would malfunction if I were to get into an accident that called for them to deploy.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated while driving approximately 25-30 mph, the vehicle loss motive power without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed and remained at the independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,038.
No sound wires behind fuse box are bad
The service stability track warning will come on while driving. It will then make the SUV shut off. This is really terrifying since it happens while driving. After the SUV shuts off, you have to wait a couple minutes before you're able to restart. The last two months, the service airbag warning will come up on the screen out of no where. It will come on while driving and setting stationary. Water will pour out from the glove box while driving.
THE RPMS SKYROCKETED WHILE DRIVING AND AS THE CAR WAS PULLED OVER IT CAUGHT FIRE. THE FIRE DEPT SAID IT TOOK PLACE IN THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE MOTOR AND BURNED THROUGH THE FUEL LINE. IGNITING THE FUEL
THERE IS WATER THAT COMES DOWN INTO THE WIRING HARNESS OF ALL OF THE DOORS. I AM ABLE TO TAKE THE WIRING HARNESSES OFF AND TONS OF WATER DUMPS OUT. THIS HAS CORRODED MANY OF THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS. THE CORROSION HAS LED TO LOCKS WINDOWS MIRRORS AND SPEAKERS NOT WORKING. PLEASE RECALL THIS.....
I HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH MY "SERVICE AIR BAG" LIGHT COMING ON WHENEVER THE PASSENGER SIDE SEATBELT IS PULLED TO HARD OR EVEN IF I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THIS ALSO OCCURS WHEN THE PASSENGER MAKES THE SLIGHTEST OF MOVEMENT IN THE SEAT. IT OCCURS BOTH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD. IT IS STARTING TO HAPPEN MORE AND MORE AS TIME GOES ON. IT HAPPENED TODAY JUST GOING TO THE TOP OF MY DRIVEWAY WHICH IS LESS THAN A MILE LONG AND BACK TO THE HOUSE. ALSO, I HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH MY TAILGATE RANDOMLY FALLING WHEN HALFWAY OPEN OR FULLY OPEN. THE TAILGATE HAS ALMOST CAUSED INJURY TO MY HUSBAND, BOTH OF MY BOYS AND MYSELF. THE VEHICLE IS ALWAYS STATIONARY WHEN THIS ISSUE OCCURS AND DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME THE TAILGATE IS OPENED.
THERE IS A AIRBAG NOTIFICATION THAT COMES ON ALSO IM HAVING ENGINE ISSUES WHERE MY FUEL RUNS OUT EXTREMELY FAST WITHOUT NOTICE. I CAN DRIVE LESS THAN 30 MILES AND MY VEHICLE WILL BE ALMOST OF EMPTY FROM A FULL TANK. IT JUST HAPPENED OUT OF NOWHERE. MY FRIEND ALSO HAS THE SAME VEHICLE AND SHE IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES WITH HER CAR. I REALLY NEED THIS FIXED ASAP.*DT*JB
MY PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE I GOT THE CAR IN MARCH OF 2020. I HAVE JUST REPLACED MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS OCTOBER OF 2020 AND NOW THE DRIVER SIDE LIGHTS DOESN'T WORK. ON THE DASHBOARD THE LIGHT THAT'S SUPPOSE TO SHOW WHEN YOUR BRIGHT'S ARE ON, DOESN'T COME ON ANYMORE AND I WAS IN MOTION WHEN I REALIZED THEY HAD STOPPED WORKING.
'SERVICE AIR BAG' HAD BEEN ON MY COMPUTER SCREEN FOR A FEW DAYS AND ISN'T GOING OFF. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED AND THEY TOLD ME IT MEANS SOMETHING IS UNPLUGGED. I TOOK IT BACK ONLY TO HAVE IT COME BACK IN MONTHS LATER. IT SOMETIMES HAPPEN AS I'M DRIVING BUT LATELY IT'S THERE WHEN I TURN THE IGNITION. I ALSO HAVE SHIFTING PROBLEMS OUT OF FIRST GEAR AND SOMETIMES SECOND. I WAS TOLD IT'S THE WAVE PLATES AND IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE. HOW ARE THESE VEHICLES STILL BEING SOLD WITH THE SAME ISSUES OVER AND OVER! THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AS I'M DRIVING.
DASH LIGHT STATING "SERVICE AIR BAG" COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. WHILE TRAVELING AND SOMETIMES AT STOP
I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WOULD NOT GO INTO 2ND OR ANOTHER GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SHIFTING. I LOVE THE ACADIA BUT THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. IT DEFINITELY IS A SAFETY HAZARD. IT LEFT ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. LUCKILY I HAD A PLACE TO PULL OVER. WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS AN OUTRAGEOUS COST FOR SOMETHING THAT GMC KNOWS ABOUT.
I'VE COME TO FIND OUT MY CAR IS THROWING A CODE FOR THE TCM BEING STUCK TURNS OUT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON ISSUE AS WELL AS THE WAVE PLATE FOR THIS MODEL GMC SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE BEING THIS IS THEIR DESIGN FLAW AND SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE ACROSS THE BOARD FOR ALMOST ALL ACADIAS OF THESE YEARS.
BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE USED, WAS FINE AND WAS A GREAT CAR FOR MONTHS UNTIL THE BATTERY WOULD NOT KEEP A CHARGE. TOOK IT TO AUTO ZONE THEY TESTED MY BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR ALL WAS GOOD THEY CHARGED UP MY BATTERY FOR ME. THE BATTERY LASTED TWO DAYS NEXT TIME I WENT TO START IT IT WAS DEAD. WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE IT EVERY DAY TO KEEP A CHARGE ON IT. EVENTUALLY WENT AND BOUGHT A BRAND NEW BATTERY. ONLY AFTER A FEW DAYS THE BATTERY WAS DEAD AGAIN. ON A BRAND NEW BATTERY IT WOULD NEED TO BE DROVE EVERYDAY TO KEEP A CHARGE. IT'S TO THE POINT WHERE I WILL HAVE TO JUMP IT TO DRIVE IT AND THEN IT WONT EVEN KEEP A CHARGE FOR A HOUR. BRAND NEW BATTERY. NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ALTERNATOR. NO LIGHTS , ETC. BEING LEFT ON. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH IT. NEED MY CAR.
THEFT KEEPS COMING ON AND DOESN'T START AT TIMES THEN THE WINDOWS DON'T ALWAYS GO UP AND ALSO THE AIR BLINKS 3 TIMES AND DOESN'T STAY ON IT JUMPS AROUND AND SOMETIMES IT'S STUCK ON WON'T TURN OFF AND WHILE THE THE AIR IS STUCK TRYING TO WORK THE ENGINE RUNS HARD
THE RADIO RANDOMLY STOPPED WORKING A FEW WEEKS AGO AND THE SIGNAL LIGHT YOU CAN'T HEAR. NO BEEPS AT ALL ARE BEING HEARD SINCE THE RADIO STOPPED WORKING. IT TURNS ON BUT YOU CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING. YOU ALSO CAN'T HEAR ANY OF THE SENSORS IF THEY LIGHT UP ON THE DASH.
THE SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS CAME ON SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE LAST MONTH AND PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WONT TURN ON. *TR

STABILITY TRACK WARNING LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON I WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT IT COULD BE THE SENSOR SO I HAD IT REPLACED WITH A FACTORY BRAND GMC SENSOR AND I'M STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO MY PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG KEEPS SAYING IT NEEDS TO BE SERVICED BUT IT'S NEVER BEEN DEPLOYED AND NO ONE HAS AN ANSWER FOR WHY THIS WARNING KEEPS COMING UP THE STABILITY TRACK WARNING COMES ON AS I'M DRIVING EVERY TIME AFTER ABOUT 10 TO 15 MINUTES AND THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WARNING COMES ON AS SOON AS I START THE VEHICLE ENGINE. AND ALSO I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH CODE P0700 IT KEEPS TURNING ON MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND I HAD IT FIXED BUT IT STILL KEEPS TURNING ON . RATTLING NOISE IN IDLE
