TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 GMC YUKON XL 1500. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CONTACT NOTICED A BURNING ODOR. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHILE REFUELING THE VEHICLE AND ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS, HOWEVER THE DETAILS OF THE DIAGNOSIS COULD NOT BE PROVIDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH WHEN I BEGAN TO SMELL SMOKE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST OIL SPILLED ON EXHAUST SYSTEM. THEN THE SMOKE GOT WORSE AND HAD A TERRIBLE ODOR. I LOOKED DOWN AT THE CENTER CONSOLE AND SMOKE WAS COMING OUT FROM AROUND THE EDGES AND THE ASH TRAY AREA. I STARTED LOOKING FOR A PULLOFF AS I WAS ON A COUNTRY ROAD. AS I FOUND ONE FIRE STARTED COMING UP THROUGH THE GAPS. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT I HAD A FIRE THAT WAS GOING TO DESTROY THE VEHICLE. SO, ONCE I WAS STOPPED I LOOKED FOR MY FIRE EXTINGUISHER BUT COULDN'T FIND IT AND THEN I REMEMBERED THAT I HAD BOTTLED WATER IN THE VEHICLE. I GRABBED 4 OF THEM AND WENT BACK TO THE DRIVERS SIDE AND BEGAN TO POUR WATER DOWN THROUGH THE OPENING IN THE CONSOLE THAT HAD BEEN CAUSED BY THE FIRE MELTING IT. THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT QUICKLY. I THEN PUT ON GLOVES AND REMOVED THE TOP PART OF THE CONSOLE THAT HAD BEEN MOSTLY DESTROYED BY THE FIRE. IN LOOKING INTO THE BOTTOM IT APPEARS THAT SMALL BITS OF PAPER, RECEIPTS, ETC. HAD FALLEN DOWN ONTO THE WIRING HARNESS BELOW. MY GUESS IS THAT SINCE I HAD PLUGGED MY XM RADIO INTO THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER IT HAD HEATED UP THE WIRES WHICH HAD HEATED UP THE PAPERS UNTIL THEY BEGAN TO BURN. I CONSIDER THIS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THE CONSOLE, THE CAUSE BEING THE CRACKS IN THE CONSOLE/ASH TRAY WHICH WOULD ALLOW PAPER OBJECTS TO FALL ONTO THE WIRING HARNESS BELOW AND CAUSE A FIRE. THE FIRE MELTED ABOUT SIX INCHES OF INSULATION OFF THE WIRING HARNESS AND THE WIRES TOUCHING EACH OTHER RESULTED IN FUSES BEING BLOWN. THE VEHICLE IS STILL DRIVABLE BUT AS OF THIS WRITING DOES NOT HAVE OVERHEAD LIGHTS AND DASHBOARD LIGHTING AVAILABLE & THEIR IS AN INTERMITTENT IGNITION ISSUE. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND A REPLACEMENT WIRING HARNESS BUT SUSPECT THAT WHEN I DO IT WILL COST AN ARM AND A LEG. I AM TRYING TO REPAIR THE WIRING BY REINSULATING EACH WIRE AND THEN RE-BUNDLING THEM. *TR
WAS DRIVING DOWN A STRETCH OF STRAIGHT ROAD IN WARRENTON, VIRGINIA WHEN I WENT TO PRESS THE BUTTON THAT CHANGES THE DISPLAY NEAR THE ODOMETER FROM "ODOMETER," "TRIP 1" MILES, AND "TRIP 2" MILES. WHEN I REACHED MY HAND BUMPED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND EVERYTHING IN THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF INCLUDING THE ENGINE, POWER STEERING, AND BRAKES. I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT ROLLED TO COMPLETE STOP DOWN THE ROAD WE WERE DRIVING ON. ONCE IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND EVERYTHING SEEMED ALRIGHT SO CONTINUED DRIVING, HAD IT LOOKED AT, AND WAS TOLD EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I BELIEVE THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH ISSUES AFFECT THE 2001 YUKON XL 2500 AND THAT IT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO FURTHER. *TR
HEATED SEAT MODULE FAILED AND INSTEAD OF JUST NOT WORKING IT STAYED ON, RAN MY BATTERY DOWN, CAUSED MY SEAT TO GET REALLY HOT TO THE TOUCH AND I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT IT CATCHING FIRE. IF A MODULE IS FAULTY IT SHOULD SHUT OFF NOT STAY ON AND CAUSED THE POSSIBILITY OF A FIRE AND RUN YOUR BATTERY DOWN. GM HAD TO DISCONNECT THE SEAT MODULE TO GET IT TO GO OFF. THEY WANT $481 TO FIX AND COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I PAID THEM $150 TO DISCONNECT AND THIS WAY I KNOW IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, MY YUKON COULD HAVE BURNED UP.....AFTER BUYING A NEW BATTERY (SINCE THIS CAUSED THE OTHER ONE TO GO BAD)I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY UNTIL I COULD GET IT TO CARL BLACK TO DISCONNECT PERMANENTLY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 GMC YUKON XL. WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH, THE CONTACT DECELERATED, BUT THE SPEEDOMETER DISPLAYED 120 MPH. HE STATED THAT ON SOME OCCASIONS THE SPEEDOMETER WILL DISPLAY 0 MPH AND ON OTHER OCCASIONS IT FAILS TO DISPLAY ANYTHING. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AS THE STEEPER MOTOR AND STATED THAT THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPLACEMENT WILL COST $600. GMC STATED THAT THEY CANNOT INVESTIGATE THE FAILURE BECAUSE THERE ARE NO REPORTS AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,995 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE BATTERY LEAKED ACID CAUSING THE POSITIVE CABLE TO BECOME CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE BATTERY AND CABLE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
COMPLAINT AGAINST GENERAL MOTOR CORPORATION. *BF THE CONSUMER COMPLAINED THAT HIS VEHICLE CAME OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE WITH A DEFECT IN THE VOLTAGE TO BULB CONFIGURATION THAT CAUSED THE BULBS TO BURN OUT. *TC THE CRUISE CONTROL BEGAN TO MALFUNCTION AT 45000 MILES. THE TIRES LOSE AIR PERIODICALLY (SECOND SET). THE RUNNING BOARD LIGHTS FAILED. *NM
ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ACDELCO BATTERY POSITIVE TERMINAL CORRODED AND FELL OFF WITH NO PRIOR WARNING. NO VISIBLE SIGNS. FAILURE CAN OCCUR AT ANY TIME, WITH VEHICLE EITHER RUNNING OR PARKED, AND AT ANY LOCATION. REPAIR IS A BATTERY REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR OF ACID-DAMAGED PARTS LOCATED UNDER THE BATTERY. I'VE SINCE LEARNED THAT THIS FAILURE IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE OF GM REPAIR CENTERS AND OTHER GM SUV VEHICLE OWNERS.*AK
BATTERY ACID WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE TRUCK AND ONTO THE DRIVEWAY. THE THIRD BATTERY WAS INSTALLED BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. *AK
FOR AT LEAST THREE MONTHS THE DIM HEADLIGHTS WOULD GO OUT AND ONLY THE HIGH BEAM LIGHTS WOULD WORK WE TOOK THE TRUCK IN THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE. THEN THE TRUCK STALLED AT 23500 MILES AND IT WAS TAKEN IN AND A NEW BATTERY WAS PUT IN UNDER WARRANTY. THIS IS THE THIRD GMC VEHICLE WE HAVE HAD WITH BATTERY PROBLEMS. WE ALSO HAVE A 1999 SUBURBAN THAT HAS HAD THREE BATTERIES INSTALLED. WE DO NOT KNOW AT THIS POINT IF THE NEW BATTERY WILL CORRECT THE HEADLIGHT PROBLEM BUT WILL CERTAINLY RETURN TO DEALER IF NOT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE ARE OTHER OWNERS EXPERIENCE THE SAME ELECTRICAL/SHORTAGE PROBLEMS? DT
TRUCK HAS FAILED TO START TWICE. WHEN DRIVING, AT RANDOM TIMES ALL GAUGES EXCEPT SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER WILL SHUT OFF, MESSAGE CENTER WILL ACT LIKE IGNITION IS OFF. TRUCK HAS NOT SHUT DOWN WHEN THIS OCCURS YET, BUT THE COMPUTER SEEMS TO THINK THE ENGINE IS OFF.
MULTIPLE FAILURES; A/C ODORS, DOOR LOCK, SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT AND BRAKES. *BF THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE FOLLOWING: WEATHER STRIP WAS LOOSE, THE A/C BLEW WARM, THE BELTS SQUEAKED, THERE WAS A MILDEW ODORS, THE WINDOW REGULATOR, THE FRONT SEAT BELT SQUEAKED, THE DOOR PANEL, THE STEERING WHEEL RATTLED, DRIVE SHAFT, ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE WIPERS WERE NOISY, THE HINGE PIN ON THE RADIO WAS LOOSE, ENGINE NOISES, A/C DRAIN WOULD NOT DRAIN AT TIMES UNTIL THE PASSENGER DOOR WAS CLOSED/WATER LEAD AND CAUSED BY THE LEFT FRONT FLOORBOARD. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND THEN PARKING IT FOR A WHILE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. DEALER WAS CONTACTED BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW FAILED TO ROLL DOWN, WHICH WAS CAUSED BY AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. *AK
CRUISE CONTROL FAILURE CAUSED BY AN ABERRANT VOLTAGE ON STOP LAMP CIRCUIT. ALSO THE PCM, STARTER AND SERPENTINE BELT WAS REPLACED. *AK *JB
