NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 GMC Yukon. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Brake light not working.
Both the passenger and driver side tail lamps have failed and the assembly had to be replaced.
Tail lights do not work when I press the brakes. I have been warned multiple times by drivers.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while stopped at a stop sign, the brake pedal was depressed however, the passenger’s side rear taillight failed to illuminate. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 53,570.
Taillights and Brake light LEDs go out unexpectedly or work intermittently creating a safety hazard that drivers behind the Yukon are unable to see your taillights at night or when your braking causing Potential rear end collisions. For this common problem GM recalled the taillights of 2015-16 models, but the 2017+ models that still have the same exact taillights with the same issue but has not been recalled yet. Costing owners out of warranty $800 per taillight assembly. Please look into this safety issue.
The left rear tail light has gone out. There is no user replaceable bulb and this is a sealed unit. The deal has quoted almost $800 to replace. I feel a sealed unit should not fail prematurely and should last the entirety of the life of the vehicle. Had it been user serviceable, this would be a simple repair/fix.
Brake light on the passenger side has failed and non operational. I have researched this and found it is way to common to not be a manufacturer design issue.
The transmission failed while merging and almost caused a collision. After a complete transmission replacement, the fuel injectors failed causing the same issue. GM extended fuel injector warranty due to the number of similar issues, but not in my state.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while using the remote start-up feature, he noticed that the rear passenger's side brake light and taillight were inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the taillight assemblies needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 41,169.
Air-Conditioning condenser failure (Special Coverage Adjustment 173326 Air Conditioning Condenser (Combi-Cooler) Refrigerant Leak) According to GM they say my VIN is not on the list...however, I'm having the exact same issue on my 2017 Yukon with 38k miles on it.
My transmission does not engage properly. From a starting position when I step on the gas the transmission lags and when it catches it slams / bangs into gear
My car is not shifting right. I took it into GMC, and they said they corrected it. I have taken in two times for this issue already. Today I almost was in a car accident because the car would not shift properly and it shoved me forward like A car hit me from the back. The car is not shifting properly at all. And now it’s making a muffling sound and it’s like stuck in a gear. I pulled over and I parked and then I reversed and then I went to hit the gas again to try to go slowly and it jolted forward again. This is serious and needs repaie
My tail light is faulty. It is working some, shorts out, stops working, I hit a bump, it starts working again. Almost caused a crash, the lady followed me to the store to tell me it was out. Took it to the mechanic and it was working again without any repair. Does this everyday.
I purchased a 2017 GMC Yukon Denali brand new off the showroom floor. I have maintained the services thru GMC dealership. I had to replace the struts and rear and front shocks due to hydraulic system leaking and locking up my brakes and causing extra pressure on my braking system to stop my vehicle. This cost me over $5000 to replace out of my pocket and I saw there was a previous recall in 2019 for similar problem but i was told my issues were not covered under the recall. I have also had to replace both taillights within 2years of purchasing my brand new vehicle and now they are out again. This will be my second time having to replace the LED tail lights that cost over $375 light which were stated as never go out of lifetime guarantee. You cannot just replace the bulb you have to replace the whole tail light which takes weeks to come in and then additional labor costs. The previous
LED taillights have both gone out. One was replaced by a "service bulliten" and it didn't cost us. The other recently went out at approx 80k miles. These are supposed to last the life of the vehicle. Replacement cost is $750. After doing research, there is a recall for 2015-2016 GMC Yukon taillights that are the exact same product. I contacted GMC and they refuse to replace the known defect part. This is going to cause someone to get seriously hurt. They know the part is defective or they wouldn't have had a recall on the 2015-2016 models.
My husband and I were driving down the freeway with our three children when without any warning, we heard a loud explosion and what felt like something hit our vehicle. There were no other cars near by. When we pulled off the freeway into a gas station to look at the vehicle the sunroof had a huge hole in the center. The remaining class attached to the vehicle was all shattered. There was shattered class on the closed shade. We didn't know what happened. It was very traumatizing. We thought someone threw something at us or something had fallen on the vehicle. If the sun shade wasn't closed, glass would have entered the vehicle and could have caused injury to us or our children in the back seats.
The steering wheel doesn’t always turn back straight like the electric power steering has a momentary lapse in working.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that the lifters were previously replaced in 2021 at the manufacturer's expense. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine was running rough. The vehicle was taken to an unknown auto part store, where it was diagnosed with an engine cylinder malfunction. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was determined that the engine had experienced lifter failure or a more severe failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed by the dealer, and that the manufacturer might help in covering the cost of the repair. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA25007 (Engine, Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 81,638.
Brake lights quit working
Water in 3rd brake light
My 2017 GMC YUKON’S TRANSMISSION IS DEFECTIVE. THE SUV WILL JERK AND JOLT WHEN SHIFTING GEARS. IT IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO BE DRIVING WHEN YOU NEED TO RELEASE THE GAS PEDAL AND PRESS DOWN AGAIN IN ORDER TO SHIFT PROPERLY. THIS CAUSES AN EVEN MORE SUDDEN JOLTING. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AS A FAMILY VEHICLE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE A NEWBORN. I ASK A RECALL BE SUBMITTED SINCE I SEE SEVERAL REPORTS OF A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH THE 2017 GMC YUKON.
There is a known issue with the GMC strutts leaking. I contacted several GMC dealerships to purchase strutts so that a local mechanic could put fix my truck without the dealership pricing. GMC refuses to sell the parts to anyone other than a dealership. I was informed by several dealerships the part is a national back order for 6 months. The cost that GM is making for each person that purchased a 2017 Denali is between two to four thousand dollars!! While driving my truck myself and my daughter would come out of the seat! This should be a recall. I'm also reporting this to the consumer financial protection bureau. I phoned this in a month ago and have heard nothing.
BRAKE LIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY WORK. WILL COME ON SOMETIMES AND THEN GO OUT. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS STILL AND WHILE MOVING.
We took the car into the dealership and complained about the AC and the vehicle being new and they said it was a common problem with this vehicle and offered 10% discount.
LEFT AND RIGHT BRAKING LIGHTS SOME TIME DO NOT WORK WHEN BRAKING. ONLY THE REVERSE LIGHT WILL WORK WHILE THE BRAKING LIGHT WILL NOT. TO ADD, WHEN THE FRONT HEADLIGHTS ARE ON, SOME TIMES THE LEFT AND RIGHT TAIL LIGHTS (LIGHT THAT IS ON WHEN NOT BRAKING) AND BRAKING LIGHTS WILL NOT WORK. I HAVE HAD TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE PULL UP NEXT TO ME SAYING MY BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OUT IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. HOWEVER, I HAVE OBSERVED WHEN THEY ARE WORKING IN THAT SAME TIME SPAN. THE LAST TWO DAYS, ONLY THE RIGHT TAIL/BRAKING LIGHT IS NOT WORK.
DRIVER SIDE REAR BRAKE LIGHT ISN'T WORKING ANYMORE. 46K MILES ON A 2017 GMC YUKON.
BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE. BRAKE LIGHTS WORK INCONSISTENTLY. CHANGING THE BULB DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED BY NUMEROUS OWNERS. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS THE COMPONENTS HAVE TO BE REPAIRED BY A TECHNICIAN WHICH CAUSES HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS, PER LIGHT. THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED!!!
THE BRAKE LIGHT IS OUT AND A SINGLE TAIL LIGHT IS OVER 500$
BOTH BRAKE LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING AT THE SAME TIME. THERE IS NO FUSE. ONLINE REPORTS SHOW MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME VERY DANGEROUS, HUGE SAFETY ISSUE OF THEIR BRAKE LIGHTS FAILING. THE CAR 3 YEARS 2 MONTHS OLD.
The driver's side brake light and tail light has failed completely and the passenger side brake light and tail light fails intermittently. This is a safety issue that should be recalled. The vehicle only has 50k miles on it and I should not have to pay $800 per tail light to fix it!
THE BRAKES STOP WORKING. BRAKE ASSIST COMES ON. WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKES YOU CAN FEEL THE PUMP IS NOT WORKING AT ALL. THIS IS HAPPENING AT SLOW SPEEDS MOSTLY IN PARKING LOTS BUT IN FEAR OF IT HAPPENING WHEN GOING FASTER. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED ASAP- DANGEROUS TO DRIVE MY CHILDREN AROUND IN A CAR WHERE THE BRAKES JUST STOP WORKING.
MY CAR A/C HAS A LEAK AT THE CONDENSER, THIS IS A DEFECT KNOWN BY GMC, THEY ONLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY UP TO 60,000 MILES AND 72,000 ON CADILLAC, MY YUKON ACTUALLY HAS 71,500. THE REPAIR FOR THE GMC DEFECTIVE VEHICLE A/C IS EXTREMELY COSTLY TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PARTS AND OVERPRICED LABOR.
IRREGULARITIES WHEN BRAKE IS PUSHED AT LOW SPEEDS. CAN FEEL VARIOUS ISSUES SUCH AS VIBRATING BRAKE PEDAL, STUTTERING NOISE, LOSS IN PRESSURE OF BRAKES AND NEEDING EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON BRAKES TO STOP VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED 2-3 TIMES NOW, ONCE IN A PARKING LOT, IN A DRIVE THRU AND WHEN PULLING OUT/IN THE GARAGE.
TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHT NO LONGER WORKING
WHILE DRIVING, MY A/C CLIMATE CONTROL HAS FAILED IN 2017 GMC YUKON (MILAGE 78,734). THIS HAS CAUSED A DANGEROUS PROBLEM WHEN THE WINDSHIELD FOGGED UP AND I COULDN'T SEE OUT THE WINDSHIELD ALMOST CAUSING A CRASH. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH FROM THIS INCIDENT DRIVING ON I270 HERE IN MD. I AM BOTH SHOCKED AND APPALLED THERE IS NO RECALL ISSUED AND THAT GM USED LEAKY AIR CONDITIONERS THAT BUCKLE UNDER PRESSURE IN MANY 2014-2017 TRUCKS AND SUVS. WHETHER IT'S BUSTED HOSES OR LEAKY CONDENSORS, THOUSANDS OF GM OWNERS LIKE ME ARE UPSET THAT A NATIONWIDE RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED TO REPAIR THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. IT'S SUCH A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT THERE'S A NATIONWIDE BACKORDER FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS. MANY OF THE ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT PARTS WERE DISCONTINUED TO TO THE DEFECT. SEE TSB PIE0340. ALONG WITH THE ALLEGED PROBLEMS WITH THE COMPRESSOR TO CONDENSER LINES, A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SAYS THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSERS ARE DEFECTIVE BECAUSE THE MATERIALS USED TO MANUFACTURE THE CONDENSERS ARE DEFECTIVE. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL SHOP TO FIND OUT MY CONDENSER NEEDS REPLACING AND THE SERVICE TECH TOLD ME IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY BUT HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CONDENSER ON THIS MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE . HE ALSO AGREED WITH ME THAT IT SHOULD BE A RECALL SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY VEHICLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. MY DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME $160 JUST TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH THE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED THIS PROBLEM FIRST NOTED IN BULLETIN # PIE0340 DATE: JUL 2015. THEN THEY ESTIMATE REPLACEMENT OF DEFECTIVE PARTS TO BE $2000!! I CALLED GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE CASE # 9-6360482931 I ASKED WHY I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS PROBLEM WHEN I BOUGHT THIS USED VEHICLE AND THEY DECLINED TO ANSWER. I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE HAD I HAVE KNOWN OF THIS SAFETY DEFECT. I RESPECTFULLY ASK THAT YOU HAVE GM ISSUE A RECALL.
DRIVER SIDE REAR TAIL/BRAKE LIGHT GOES OUT WHEN OPEN AND CLOSE REAR HATCH. PASSENGER SIDE REAR HAS SAME ISSUE WHICH WAS RECALLED AND REPAIRED. TAP THE REAR QUARTER PANEL OR HIT A BUMP TAIL LIGHT WILL TURN OFF OR ON.
DEFECTIVE RADIATOR LEAKS R1234 FREON.
WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE BRAKES SHUTTERED AND THEY WOULDN'T HARDLY WORK. ALMOST COULDN'T GET THE VEHICLE STOPPED. A WARNING ON MY DASH SAID "SERVICE BRAKE ASSIST." THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED IN CANADA BUT NON HERE FOR MY VEHICLE SO FAR. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. GMC NEEDS TO ESTABLISH A RECALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
The information screen on the gauge cluster sometimes will stop working. This is dangerous as It is the only part that shows if the vehicle is in Park, Reverse, Nuetral, or drive. It also is the only part that shows the vehicles fuel level, blinker, cruise control, temperature and other warnings and controls. This is a common problem for the 2015- xxxx Yukon and Tahoe.
FRONT MAGNETIC SHOCKS QUICKLY FAILED, PART NO. SK3354. PART HAS BEEN ON BACKORDER FOR OVER A MONTH, WHICH MEANS IT IS FAILING ON MANY VEHICLES. PART IS KNOWN BY REPAIR SHOPS TO BE DEFECTIVE, BUT THEY SAY THE REPLACEMENT PART LASTS LONGER. GM SHOULD PAY SOMETHING TOWARD REPLACING THIS DEFECTIVE PART, WHICH IS ON MANY OF THEIR VEHICLES. FAILURE OF THIS PART CAUSES VEHICLE TO BOUNCE EXCESSIVELY WHICH MAKES THE VEHICLE MORE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL.
AFTER SENDING MY SUV FOR THE BRAKE RECALL(THE BRAKES ACTUALLY FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING) LAST MONTH, MY BRAKES FAILED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, ON WEDNESDAY 8/19 -ON MY WAY TO WORK.. I DROVE STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP. BASICALLY HAVING TO HARD PUSH THE BRAKES ON CITY STREETS STOP LIGHTS ETC. SCARY. YESTERDAY, 8/20 THEY TOLD ME THE CAR WAS FIXED. ON MY WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP 30 MIN AWAY, THEY TELL ME AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THAT BRAKE INDICATION CAME ON THE SCREEN AND THEY WILL NEED TO KEEP IT FOR MY SAFETY. AS OF NOW NO WORD ON IT BEING CORRECTED, AND QUITE HONESTLY NOT FEELING SAFE ABOUT DIVING THE CAR.
VEHICLE HAS HARD SHIFT FROM PARK. MOST OFTEN WHEN FIRST DRIVEN OF THE DAY BUT ALSO OCCURS WHEN STOPPING FOR REDLIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS WHILE TRAVELING.
IN THE LAST YEAR, BOTH OF THE REAR TAIL LIGHTS HAVE FAILED IN MY 2017 GMC YUKON. TO HAVE THE DEALERSHIP REPLACE THE TAIL LIGHTS IT COST +$750 PER TAIL LIGHT FOR A CAR THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD. I WORK WITH LED LIGHTING AND ON AVERAGE, LED LIGHTS SHOULD LAST FOR 5000 HOURS OF USE. THERE IS NO WAY THAT IN THE LAST 3 YEARS WE HAVE UTILIZED 5000 HOURS OF DRIVE TIME TO WARRANT THAT THESE LED'S SHOULD BE BURNING OUT. I BELIEVE THAT THE LED'S THAT THEY ARE USING ARE DEFECTIVE AND A CASE NEEDS TO BE MADE TO SEE IF GMC IS HAVING ISSUES WITH THE REAR TAIL LIGHT LED'S, THE PARTS ARE WAY TOO EXPENSIVE TO BE FAILING AFTER A FEW YEARS OF INTERMITTENT USE. *TR
VEHICLE HAS A ROUGH IDLE AT COLD START. ALSO MISFIRES AT STOPLIGHTS AND RANDOM TIMES. VEHICLE STALLED ONCE THIS MORNING COMPLETELY. TOLD BY MY GMC DEALERSHIP THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE ALL FUEL INJECTORS FOR OVER $2,000. I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN MARCH. THE FUEL INJECTORS ARE ON BACK-ORDER CURRENTLY SO I AM UNABLE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I WAS TOLD ANOTHER VEHICLE LIKE MINE AT THAT SERVICE CENTER HAS BEEN WAITING ALREADY FOR 6 WEEKS FOR FUEL INJECTORS AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT AT LEAST ANOTHER MONTH. THIS MEANS I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REGISTER MY VEHICLE WITH MY STATE AS IT WILL NOT PASS SMOG INSPECTION WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REGISTER IT DUE TO THE DMV CLOSURE FROM COVID-19. ITS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT CAN STALL AT ANY MOMENT AND IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX WITHOUT WAITING FOR PARTS. THESE PARTS ARE OBVIOUSLY ON BACK-ORDER SO LONG BECAUSE THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. I FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN FROM NHTSA ( DCS5097 ) WHICH COVERS MY PROBLEM EXACTLY. BUT FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, SPECIAL COVERAGE ONLY APPLIES TO 13 STATES. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MUCH MORE WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAN THOUGHT AND I BELIEVE MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND ME IS AT RISK IF I DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE AND THOSE LIKE MINE SHOULD BE COVERED BY SPECIAL COVERAGE AS WELL. AND AT THE VERY LEAST THE PARTS TO FIX THIS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE GIVEN THAT ITS BEEN A KNOWN ISSUE NOW FOR WELL OVER A YEAR. THESE PARTS HAVE BEEN BACK-ORDERED WAY BEFORE COVID-19 EVEN HIT, SO IT CANNOT BE ATTRIBUTED TO THAT. GM HAS AN OBLIGATION TO KEEP THEIR VEHICLES ON THE ROAD SAFE AND MAINTAINED TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY AND WHEN IT COMES TO THIS ISSUE THEY ARE FAILING TO DO SO. *TR
MY 2017 GMC YUKON DENALI CONTINUES TO HAVE A VERY LOUD SHUDDER SOUND AS YOU ACCELERATE.
MY DRIVERS SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS RARELY COME ON. IF I HIT A BUMP THEY COME ON FOR A SECOND.
INTERMITTENTLY DEFECTIVE TAIL / BRAKE LIGHT. LED CIRCUIT BREAKS. KNOWN ISSUE. DEALER WANTS $800 TO FIX.. *TR
LEAK IN CONDENSER, SAME AS RECALL 17336 AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER REFRIGERANT LEAK FOR GMC YUKON MODEL YEAR 2015 TO 2017. MY VEHICLE VIN DOES NOT FIT RECALL. *TR
WITHOUT WARNING, RIGHT REAR TAILLIGHT STOPS WORKING. THIS IS FOR OPERATING AND STOPPING. APPARENTLY, THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS...SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD FOR A KNOWN PART WITH PROBLEMS.
THE REAR TAIL-GATE HAS COME DOWN BY ITSELF WHEN PUTTING ITEMS INTO OR TAKING ITEMS OUT OF THE BACK OF THE CAR. IT HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST SIX TIMES AND WITHOUT WARNING. IT HAS HAPPENED IN OUR DRIVEWAY AND IN PARKING LOTS. VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF AT THE TIME. THIS CAN HURT OR KILL AN ADULT OR CHILD. I'M GOING TO REPORT THIS TO THE DEALER AT THE NEXT SERVICE VISIT, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO REPORT IT HERE BECAUSE YOU ARE THE IN CHARGE OF THE PUBLICS SAFETY. THERE IS ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL THAT HAS REPORTED THIS SAME PROBLEM. THANK YOU!
