NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Honda CR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My turbo had a nut come loose twice, once after having the turbo completely replaced. This has lead to a head gasket failure.
Fuel smell when vehicle is parked overnight. The smell is inside the cabin especially stronger near the rear left passenger door where the filler fuel is located. This has been happening even in summer temperatures, not just cold weather like some people have mentioned in forums or online.
My 2017 Honda CR-V experienced premature and sudden fuel injector failure that I believe is part of a widespread defect affecting 2017–2019 CR-V models. In April, multiple warning lights came on several times (“10-point” dashboard lights). I went to different mechanics, and one recommended a brake fluid flush, which I completed. The warnings continued. Later, while driving, I heard a sudden, harsh crunching sound from the engine area. I immediately pulled over out of concern for safety. The vehicle still moved but did not feel safe to drive, so I cautiously limped it home and canceled clients. I took the vehicle to South Point Honda in Durham, NC. Their diagnosis confirmed that all four fuel injectors had failed, and they quoted $1,679.99. I then had the repair completed at a Honda/Acura specialty shop for $1,273.12. Fuel injectors are not a regular maintenance item, and many other CR-V owners have reported the same problem. These injector failures can cause misfires, loss of power, or engine damage while driving, which is a safety concern. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate premature injector failure in 2017–2019 Honda CR-V models.
UNEXPECTED SUDDEN ACCELERATION. 2017 Honda CR-V. Twice while highway driving with autopilot on, system failed to slow it when approaching other vehicles and it sped up instead. When I pumped the brakes, it went away. I TOOK IT OFF AUTOPILOT HENCEFORTH. Several days later, coming out of a market parking lot and approaching a stop sign, the accelerator went down and sped me forward with brakes doing barely anything. I shot into a CVS parking lot, managed to stop it and turn the engine off. It's sitting in a garage now and no one knows what to do and I am terrified to drive it. Could have killed me or others around me. IT WAS NOT THE FLOOR MAT NOR ANYTHING I DID.
My valve cover gasket started leaking enough to notice on the dipstick. Was losing about 3/4 of a quart in an oil change interval. After some research I’ve seen that this is a very common issue with the 2017 Crv LX 2.4l
This complaint is in regards to three engine failures for my vehicle. I purchased the vehicle in October of 2017. In October 2020 this vehicle suffered a malfunction of the fuel injector systems. Warning lights were enabled prior to losing full power of the vehicle at this time and it was brought in for repair. In June 2025, my vehicle began losing power while actively driving resulting in the car and myself being put in potentially dangerous conditions on the road. The car would fail to accelerate and move. The car had to be coasted back to an area of safety. There were no warning lights prior to this happening. Warning lights came on hours later after attempting to address the issue. At that time in June 2025, my car was found to have a blown head gasket from an unknown cause per the dealership. I was without a car for approximately 3 weeks which was devastating for my family and caused hardship. As well as a financial burden from the costly repairs. In September 2025, my car again lost power and was required to be towed to the dealership. At this time I was told again that the fuel injectors needed replaced due to failure. Warning lights did not display prior to the power failure, they displayed after the fact as we attempted to find a cause at the scene. This was a sudden power failure that could have been potentially dangerous.
while driving on a clear day, i went under a bridge on a downhill slope and the car flashed the brake warning and applied the breaks automatically almost causing the car behind me to hit me. Dealer has not been able to reproduce the issue. this has happened a few times. once on the highway and another time slowly going through a construction site where there was a dip in the road. the last issue happened on 9/27/2025. the first issue was in March of 2024
When driving the vehicle the steering wheel sticks when I turn, change lanes, etc. It is most noticeable at highway speeds. If I am moving to the left, the steering wheel sticks and doesn't want to freely move back to the right/straighten up. Obviously the reverse occurs when I go to move to the right- it sticks and pressure is required to straighten the steering wheel. to date the steering wheel has not remained in a stuck position. This presents a major safety concern - if it doesn't move freely back to the desired position there is heightened chance of a traffic accident resulting in damage to my car and other cars involved. Worst case scenario: a serious accident resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO MYSELF as well as any other drivers and/or passengers involved. NOTE: My local Honda dealer reports that there are NO recalls or Service bulletins on my vehicle, based on the VIN number. Other VIN numbers of the same make and model year as mine (2017 CR-V) ARE subject of a recall (Honda Service Bulletin # 18-103, regarding faulty Steering Gearbox.) For that reason I feel my vehicle should be included and repairs made at no cost to me.
The high-pressure and low-pressure fuel pump malfunctioned and no, it is not available for inspection upon request. The car all of a sudden got stalling while running at 45 mph and got jerking continuously. After the incident, the car was taken to a dealer for a diagnosis and the dealer inspected that the high-pressure and low-pressure fuel pump got malfunctioned. There were NO warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure and they first appeared when the incident occured.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled on the interstate. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway. After waiting for a while, the vehicle was restarted with several unknown warning lights flashing on the instrument cluster. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the intake cam, the high-pressure fuel pump, the fuel injectors, and the spark plugs were replaced. The high-pressure test was performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 144,532.
This car has some fuel injector problems. I've replaced them and it's still running very crappy. I've read a lot and seen a lot of people getting their fuel injectors fixed with this year of vehicle and now it smells like it's flooding out and Honda should be covering this. This has been an ongoing issue. I've tried to fix it. It's not working. This is car is a lemon.
My cruise control will not work. Lane departure is not working. All my lights are on in my new vehicle I just purchased. BAD FUEL INJECTORS seem to be the problem. Honda should recall these bad fuel injectors before a serious accident occurs.
On 9/2/25 all the engine lights came on on the dash. I replaced the battery and it was fine the rest of the day. Then 9/3/25 once again all the lights are on and none of the ADAS work.
Occasionally, for no reason, automatically brakes and issues the brake warning notification despite no traffic in front of the vehicle. When a vehicle brakes for no reason in traffic, the risk is that you will be hit from behind.
The headlights were on after I replaced the battery. Did a little bit of research and found that the body control module or (BCM) would be going out. Got a new one sent and tried replacing it and the part didn't end up working. Took it to a non honda dealer. Got it taken care of, but the new BCM wouldn't work. All warning lights came on and now I have to deal with the BCM going out again and not able to return the part back to Honda.
My car decelerated on the highway from a speed of approximately 65 mph to 9 mph in a matter of seconds without any reason. I drove in the breakdown lane with flashers on to get to the next exit and upon entering the off-ramp my CRV suddenly accelerated back to normal. I took my vehicle to my Honda dealership and they told me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It was showing no codes. The write-up did not mention my description of the deceleration on the highway. It discussed only my thought that my alternator might be bad. This was 8/19/25. Since this check at the dealership my car has done this exact act two more times on the highway for no reason. I am terrified to drive my car on the highway because I fear for my safety.
All auxiliary safety system warning lights came on at once, with ABS, TPMS, collision avoidance and adaptive cruise all rendered inoperable. Dealer says faulty fuel injectors are to blame. This is a known issue, documented since at least 2022 [XXX] ) INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Battery Control Module ( BCM ). Fire Hazard. Confirmed Dealer McConnell Honda/Acura Montgomery. Component Has Been Inspected By Dealer. Warning Lamps And Other Symptoms Such As Battery Failure. Recalls Are Out For 2017 Honda CR-V.
All lights on dash coming on. Codes p0172 and p0303 pop up on obd scanner. Mafs , spark plugs, ignition coils and air filters all replaced. Car goes into limp mode. 124,800 miles. Dealer says fuel injectors failed and needs replacing, research shows this is a common issue for the. 2017 crv Honda edition. Mpg never dropped , remained. 33.1. When codes cleared, car functions like normal.
Steering is sticky and grabbing. There is a catch in the middle position. There is a warranty extension out for this problem but not for my VIN #. How do I get Honda to cover this? Problem has been progressing over the last month. This occurs at variable speeds.
We kept Honda CRV EXL 2017 on time repair by the Honda dealership ,never missed one deadline of repair as recommended by the Honda repair shop. Now they are saying that head gasket is blown and engine has jammed. How can head gasket go bad randomly when maintenance was done regularly by the Honda dealer, who is fault it is ? Who should be paying for its repair?
Back in July, my car started having the lights come on; it lit up the whole dashboard. The brake system, tire pressure, brake hold system, hill start, adaptive cruise control, etc. It affected the power of the vehicle. There was no acceleration at all. It was like it went in limp mode. This has happened numerous times. The other problem is starting it was making a hesitation to start. It would also start rough as in almost like a shake. We noticed that it was using antifreeze more often than it should and would get hot sitting still. That's when we took car to be inspected by a certified mechanic and that's when we found out that we needed a new engine due to antifreeze seeping into the engine.
While driving my 2017 Honda CR-V, I experienced sudden, unexpected steering behavior consistent with a defective electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox. The steering wheel momentarily became difficult to turn in either direction, with a "sticky" or binding feel followed by a sudden release of resistance, causing oversteer beyond my input. When the wheel was turned to or near full lock, the EPS appeared to apply assist opposite my input, briefly pulling the vehicle unexpectedly to one side. The failure occurred early on most noticably at highway speeds going down windy roads downhill. It became progressively worse in other driving situations over time. This unintended steering behavior reduced vehicle maneuverability and created a serious risk of loss of control, including coming dangerously close to unavoidably crossing the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic. I took the vehicle to Tony Honda in Kona. The dealer diagnosed a defective EPS steering gearbox and replaced the gearbox assembly, performed a four-wheel alignment, and completed the steering angle neutral position learning procedure. The diagnosis and repair exactly match Honda Service Bulletin 18-103 / NHTSA Recall 18V-663 (Honda codes C2N / P2O), covering 2017–2018 Civic and CR-V vehicles for an improperly secured torque sensor magnet that shifts within the gearbox and causes unintended steering input. However, my VIN was not included in the recall, and I paid $2,000 out of pocket for a repair Honda performs free of charge on recalled vehicles with the identical defect. The recall covers only 54 vehicles total, despite multiple owner complaints reporting the same failure on 2017 CR-Vs outside that VIN range. I request that NHTSA investigate expanding Recall 18V-663 to include additional 2017 CR-V VINs with the same defect, and that affected owners who paid for the repair be eligible for reimbursement.
CUSTOMER STATES THERE IS A CLICKING/POPPING NOISE WHEN MAKING SLIGHT STEERING ADJUSTMENTS. - POWER STEERING RACK REPLACEMENT
Air conditioning goes off before reaching 40,000 miles.
Engine Head Gasket failure at 68,000 miles (8k miles after warranty). Vehicle enters limp mode at random, including total loss of power on the highway at speeds in excess of 60 miles an hour. All dashboard warning lights turn on due to misfire associated with coolant leaking into the combustion chamber. Appointment with dealership is pending.
This is the message I received from the service representative. Hi this is Will with Honda I checked out your car I heard the noise the noise is your BTC actuator timing chain actuator that you need a timing chain job unfortunately also found a full head gasket need fuel injectors as well give me a call I can go over everything it's expensive though…” This vehicle has been serviced exclusively by the same Honda dealership. There was a slight miss upon starting the vehicle that would go away upon driving, that was the reason for taking it in to be checked. No lights came on signaling a problem, no loss of power, no overheating and although the service representative mentioned a noise there was no noise that we could hear. This vehicle has only 108,000 carefully driven miles on it.
The driver's side mirror wobbles. I took it to a repair shop and they confirmed that it was not the mirror but the base of the side mirror that is attached to the car door that wobbles. They said that it is a manufacturing defect. The passenger side mirror does not wobble. This seems to be a PREVALENT issue with Honnda CRVs online - the wobbly driver side mirror. This is uncomfortable to look at while driving - it can give you a headache or make the driver dizzy. Honda needs to make a recall about these defective drive-side side mirrors. We have a 2017 Honda CRV. My daughter recently got the car so I do not know how long this problem has been going on.
The electrical system periodically goes haywire - all warning lights come on and flash. It some cases, my car lost power and it was unsafe to drive. I was worried it would overheat. I have rebooted and sometimes it resets and sometimes it doesn't. it is extremely rough starting now. The electrical problem can start when i start the car and sometimes it happens while driving. with all warnings going, it concerns me that I would not know which alert might be real. The vehicle seems to short itself out. i have changed the battery more times than would be normal. It is draining the battery while sitting (no lights or other issues that would cause it). The electrical system flashing has been happening from the beginning but it is getting more frequent and doesn't reset. I have also taken it to a mechanic a d paid for various repairs and nothing helps.
Our 2017 Honda CRV EX Body Control Module has to be replaced due to the alarm system coming on and the car trying to start itself along with a parasitic drain. I have driven Honda's my entire life because they are suppose to be reliable and I guess this is no longer the case. Very disappointed with this vehicle.
Driving Honda crv 1.5L around 40mph when car went into limp mode check engine started flashing and almost caused a crash from stalling traffic. Took it to Honda dealership and stated that it was a costly blown head gasket. Within further investigating it's common for these 1.5L head gaskets to blow prematurely due to poor design that needs to be recalled.
On July 31, 2025, my 2017 Honda CR-V was diagnosed by a certified Honda dealership with complete air conditioning failure. The A/C compressor produced a loud knocking noise and was found to have leaked black debris (burned oil/metal), contaminating the entire system. I was informed the system required full replacement, totaling $4,500. The defect has disabled the ability to cool the vehicle cabin, which poses a risk to drivers with health conditions. It also affects window defogging and visibility, especially in humid, rainy conditions. This matches hundreds of similar complaints and class action lawsuits filed against Honda for known A/C system defects in 2016–2021 CR-V and Civic models. My car is outside the standard compressor warranty, and Honda refuses to provide assistance. This failure should be considered a safety hazard, particularly for individuals who require temperature control for medical reasons.
The contact owned a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that after parking at a gas station/store, she locked the doors, and with the key fob in her hand, went into the store. The contact stated that the stranger had approached her at her residence prior to the incident. The contact reported that a stranger was able to gain entry and drive the vehicle on the freeway and crashed into some unknown vehicles. A police report was filed. It was unknown if there were any reported injuries. There was no fire. The contact was able to confirm that all the air bags deployed while retrieving her belongings. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot and deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted four times. Additionally, she sent an email regarding the matter. The failure mileage was 74,000.
ALL warning lights come on at once while driving. First occurrence happened during a snowy day. I immediately went to an independent facility to have the codes run as I was concerned with losing braking ability as it was one of the many lights saying there was an issue. The mechanic checked it for codes and listed all the faults I could see on the dash. Mechanic said most likely it was a battery problem, so the battery was tested and was fine. Safety at risk due to sudden cancellation of cruise control and not having emergency automatic braking. 2 independent repair shops have been able to reproduce the issue. One was able to clear the codes and have the issue be reproduced real-time connected to reader. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer or police insurance reps. The warning lamps are: all of them. Electrical, power steering, emerg. Braking, TPMS, LKAS, engine, etc. During the winter the lights stay on for weeks at a time. Spring and early summer significantly less. Summer time thus far has been higher than in the spring, but the time they are on is less (a day or two) Temperature is the only thing I noticed a real difference with. Cold was the worst. Not even having the vehicle warmed up would remove the lights. They turn on and off whenever they want.
Cylinder 2 and Cylinder 3 misfire code, rough idling, loss of power Specific problems: Rough idling: The engine may feel shaky or unstable when the vehicle is stopped or idling, often due to incomplete combustion in one or more cylinders Hesitation or lack of power: You may notice your CR-V hesitating or losing power during acceleration, or a general reduction in performance, making it feel sluggish or difficult to drive Stalling: The engine may stall unexpectedly, especially at low speeds or when stopped, as a result of misfires disrupting normal engine operation Check Engine Light: The check engine light may come on or begin flashing, indicating that the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics have detected repeated misfires Vibration or shaking: You might feel abnormal vibrations through the steering wheel, seat, or floor, especially while idling Unusual noises: Listen for popping, sputtering, or knocking sounds from the engine, which can indicate incomplete combustion or irregular firing Poor acceleration or loss of power: You might notice reduced engine responsiveness, sluggish acceleration, or the inability to reach higher speeds easily Erratic RPM needle: The tachometer may fluctuate unpredictably due to inconsistent engine speed and combustion Smoke from the exhaust: Excessively rich mixtures from leaking injectors can result in black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe Difficulty starting or no start: The engine may struggle to start or fail to start if enough fuel isn’t being delivered to one or more cylinders
- rack and pinion steering has developed 'sticky steering' problem - steering resistance has created steering difficulty and dangerous driving situation - problem has been confirmed by a dealer and estimate for repair over $5,000 - component has not been inspected by manufacturer, wish they would. - no warning lights prior to failure. Steering my Honda CRV 2017 has become difficult and the 'sticky steering' symptoms have also been experienced by other CRV owners as expressed on line. This vehicle has become dangerous to drive
To Whom It May Concern, I am reporting a serious safety concern with my 2017 Honda CR-V related to the fuel/propulsion system. While driving, the vehicle will suddenly stop accelerating. At the same time, multiple warning messages appear on the dash, including alerts that the driver assist system, cruise control, and brake system are not functioning, along with other system warnings. This issue happens without warning and has occurred multiple times. It creates a dangerous situation, especially at highway speeds or in traffic, since the vehicle loses the ability to accelerate and several critical safety systems appear disabled. I am very concerned that this may be a defect in the fuel/propulsion system or an associated electrical/control system that could pose a risk to myself, my passengers, and other drivers. Please advise on the next steps for inspection and resolution.
American Honda extended the warranty for the A/C compressor shaft seal on the 2017 Honda CR-V to 10 years from the original purchase date, with no mileage limitation. This extended warranty covers the repair or replacement of the A/C compressor shaft seal if it leaks. This is due to a known corrosive material that they used in the system. My car failed this seal and they would replace this for free. However, the discharge hose on the same system also failed due to corrosion of the same material. The hose is not covered under the warranty and Honda will not fix the hose or even cover any percentage of the cost. Herb Chambers in Burlington won't do the AC comprssor shaft seal without the hose being replaced because the system will still leak. American Honda and Herb Chambers want me to pay $1400 for a repair to the discharge hose before they will perform the work on the compressor seal. If the corrosive material was the culprit for the shaft seal, then it is also the culprit on the discharge hose and I would like to make sure they are responsible for using this corrosive material and they should cover the whole repair. I would like to know my options.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power while the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the vehicle stalled. No warning light was illuminated. Several local dealers were contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to exceed 5 MPH while driving. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the #1, #2, and #3 fuel injectors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
Date of Incident: [XXX] Location: NYC, [XXX]. Mileage: 95,000 Description of Incident: On [XXX] while driving my 2017 Honda CR-V at approximately [XXX] at 20 mph I experienced a sudden brake system failure. When I pressed the brake pedal fully to stop the vehicle, the pedal felt extremely hard and resistant, and the vehicle continued moving, failing to slow or stop as expected and hitting the vehicle in front. While no major accident happened due to how slow I was going, This occurred as I was approaching a traffic light. I did not apply the electronic parking brake (EPB) during the incident. No warning lights were illuminated on the dashboard at the time of the failure. Immediately after the incident, the brakes began functioning normally again, suggesting an intermittent issue. I am concerned about the reliability of the brake system, especially given reports of brake issues in 2017–2019 CR-Vs. I have not yet had the vehicle inspected but plan to tow it to a Honda dealership or mechanic for diagnosis. I am reporting this to ensure the NHTSA is aware of this potential safety defect, which may be related to the ongoing investigation into 2017–2019 Honda CR-V brake systems. Please contact me for additional information if needed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

At highway speed the steering becomes erratic and jerky.
steering sticking vehicle is available for inspection when the steering sticks you have tendency to over correct Honda dealership has confirmed the problem with no warning first started happening occasionally about 2-3 yrs ago, has just become persistent in last 2 months. 2017 cr-v car has 61000 miles all though this model has had some safety issues in the past( NHTSA recall report 18v-663) they refuse to fix this problem unless I pay them over $5000
I have had all warning lights go on disabled some options, gave me incorrect speed, (i ended up w a speeding ticket over that) made my vehicle go in limp mode ,didn't want to accelerate on highway, could have caused an accident I have a young child and was scared to even drive it. It turned out to be my fuel injectors which was very pricey and I had honda do the repair. I have seen a whole lot of people with this issue with the engine I have which is the 1.5 turbo. I think it should be addressed by honda and they should really be fixing the issue at no cost especially since they know the original injectors were faulty and they changed the part number. Hope it gets addressed on behalf of hundreds of thousands of these vehicles and not so happy honda customers.
