NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Honda CR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
All dash lights come on. has cylinder misfire. did some research it seems like is related to the fuel injectors. honda dealer wants to charge me 4300 for changing fuel injectors.
Center display unit goes blank or screen changes from day to night. Beeps constantly as screen changes and will not recognize touch inputs or shut off.
Driving 25 mph on a straight road, the automatic braking system engaged with beep sound only but not on the dash display as it should. the car was suddenly braked to a stop. nothing was near or in front of the car.
The driver side, curtain airbag deployed incorrectly. The airbag deployed at an angle. Instead of the airbag going down to provide a barrier between the window and the driver, the air bag slid to the right hand side of the driver's head. This meant that the driver's head was squeezed between the window and the airbag for two or three minutes until the airbag deflated. The car seat airbag was deployed as well. The collision happened at a 30 degree angle. The driver was stopped and the oncoming driver was traveling 10-15 mph. The rear door on the driver's side was struck and was the only door damaged. No windows were damaged. The vehicle is a total loss and is being towed by the insurance company to be auctioned and salvaged.
The vehicle's all safety warning lights are turning on. The vehicle was taken to a Honda dealer for diagnostic testing, who reported that it requires new fuel injectors at a cost of $1,700.00. In researching the issue, it appears that this is an ongoing problem with multiple 2017 and 2018 Honda CRVs.
2017 Honda CR-V with 132118 miles has intermittently been experiencing all dash display alarms activating at the same time for past 25k miles. (ie) hill start assist, brake system problem, power steering system problem, vehicle stability assist problem, etc... This also disabled the lane keep assist and cruise control features on the car. Dealership ran diagnostic and found code P0172 indicating fuel system too rich and confirmed with a failed air/fuel ratio test. This indicated the car needs complete fuel injector replacement.
All the safety feature icons come on each time the vehicle is started and stay illuminated on the dashboard. It is unclear if these safety features would work in the event they are needed. Feel this is a safety concern that Honda is not addressing.
Electronic power steering fault due to internal short inside electronic steering rack and pinion assembly.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost automotive power. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that an abnormal odor was inside the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and DTC: P0087 (Low fuel rail or System Pressure) was retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously taken to a local dealer on several occasions, and the fuel injectors and spark plugs were replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 63,702.
ALL dash lights came on and it showed all safety systems had faults. Took it to the dealership and was told I needed injectors. I have looked into this issue and many CR-V models have had warranty extensions for this exact issue. Lucky me mine is not one of the one's in the VIN group for this extension. So I am facing a $2,000 bill. The car is still driveable but its hard to feel safe with random dash lights coming on.
Engine was overheating due to a defective head gasket. “The head gasket provides a seal that keeps that pressure contained within the engine’s cylinder. The head gasket also provides a seal for internal engine water and oil passages“ (Honda). I have found hundreds of others with similar defects for the Honda 2017-2018 1.5L engines. I had no warning until the engine was too hot and the car alerted me to pull over to cool the engine. Car is regularly serviced by Honda dealership.
On startup all safety warning lights flashed on and disabled all safety driving aids. This persisted and took to Honda dealer. Their diagnostics revealed faulty fuel injectors with code P0304 failed number 4 cylinder. Recommend replacing fuel injector go for $2000.
The AEB system is falsely being triggered, causing a sudden stop or drastic slow down of my CRV when there's nothing present to trigger the system. My car would drastically slow down, nearly causing a rear end collision from another vehicle. I've experience the problem on multiple occasions, in different locations, while going different speeds. The car has not experienced any other electronic or mechanical issue. The warning message did show on the dash as the car came to a halt.
Sudden loss of power. Unable to accelerate. Car towed to Honda dealer who confirmed blown turbo and likely internal engine damage. This was the first year the turbo 4 was installed in the Honda CR-V and this problem has been reported previously. We were led to believe from Consumer Reports that Honda had extended the warranty on cars with this engine, but dealer said no.
The car first does not respond to the key fob and when you look inside the dash is on despite not using push-to-start and you have to use the manual key to open the door. Then the car alarm will go off and continue not to repond to the KeyFob until you, once again, use the manual key to unlock and silence th e car. The only solution I have gotten is to take the battery out of my key fob and disable push-to-start function. They already replaced my Key Fob AND car battery and the problem has persisted. No recall information as of yet and I'm taking it to the dealership for further scrutiny...
The dash warning lights all come on when the vehicle is started. Numerous Warning messages scroll across the dash indicating just about every system on the vehicle is malfunctioning. The collision warning system stops working, the lane change warning stops working, cruise control stops working. I have no idea what else could have stopped working that could mean the difference between life and death. My vehicle has had this problem for almost two years now. This problem stops after disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes then it comes back unpredictably. Honda dealerships just guess what the problem is because there are no definitive error codes. They randomly want to change parts like fuel injectors, onboard computer, brakes, battery, and others, and charge thousands of dollars and will not refund the money when the problem reappears. This problem is putting drivers at serious risk and Honda has done absolutely nothing to find and repair the problem. There are hundreds of reports of this problem online and Honda has not responded. Honda dealerships are making tons of money from this issue and doing nothing to solve the problem.
Fuel injectors have failed on this car 2x before it has hit 120k miles. First was at 50k ish. Honda will not acknowledge this as an issue, even though it is an extremely common issue with all of the 1.5L engines on civics, accords and their other cars in this engine type. My mechanic has checked the service records and the most common issue with these cars, and this is a super common issue, always requiring fuel injectors to repair it. Car idles very very badly when started, and should not be having all of these issues on a well-maintained 8 year old car. It causes a check engine light to appear and an “emissions system issue” warning to appear on the car. It’s only been 3/4 years with the 2nd set of injectors (which were replaced under my optional extended warranty on the car, purchased through Honda). But I was not warned that this was a common issue until going to an independent service technician when my check engine light came on. I
All the dashboard warning lights come on. They will turn off at short intervals, but then come back on. I took the car to the dealer in 2024 and they diagnosed it as rear tire sensor problem. Paid over $800 to have this replaced and all the dashboard warning lights came back on the next day. Went back to the dealer and they then diagnosed it as bad fuel injector and quoted repair at over $1,200. We did not have the injector replaced as they could not guarantee fixing the fuel injector would turn the lights off as this seems to be a common reported problem in 2017 Honda CRVs. Over the past year the dashboard warning lights would come on and off at random intervals. Over the past two months, along with all warning lights remaining on, the car has now started to stall within the first 5 minutes of driving it. Due to the stalling, we took the car to an independent mechanic who followed the Honda service bulletin and did a full tune up on the car but all dashboard warning lights remain on and the car continues to stall at times.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment, after which, the vehicle lost motive power and was unable to accelerate above 40 MPH, prompting the contact to discontinue driving the vehicle. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the turbo. The contact was informed that the turbo needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact had filed a complaint# 11652854 the contact wanted to add to her complaint. On a separate occasion, April 21, 2025, the contact was coming out of the store when the vehicle made unknown sounds and vibrating. All the warning lights illuminated. The contact stated while driving at 45 MPH, on the highway and the vehicle stopped. The contact tried to merge to the side of the road. The contact contacted the dealer and a tow truck was sent, the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact obtained a loaner vehicle and was advised by the dealer, that the vehicle had been diagnosed with fuel injector failure and spark plugs needed to be replaced due to the turbo failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
The infotainment system goes dark intermittently without warning. The screen blinks, showing the "Brightness" feature. Dangerous as using this system to navigate on the highway. I cannot find a TSB or recall for this problem?
I have purchased a car from a private seller with an altered odometer (mileage discrepancy and now it has all type of lights showing on the dash and car stops running all of a sudden I have taken to Honda dealer for diagnosis and they told us we been fraud on miles and they messed with it electronically
Water collecting in rear hatch frame. Have to remove the two rubber grommets and move hatch up and down to remove water. hearing water in frame when opening hatch.
We have had this problem more than once but this morning it nearly caused an accident. My husband was driving to work and all of a sudden the car's automatic breaking system caused the car to stop dead, causing the car behind him to have to swerve up on the sidewalk to avoid hitting him. He was not going over a metal plate, there waDSs no car stopped in front of him. This has happened at least ten times in the time we have owned the car and we have been INCREDIBLY lucky that it has not caused an accident, but it's still clearly a problem. We have complained about this to the dealership when we bring it in but they just shrug since they can't reproduce it and it seems to happen randomly. Just all of a sudden driving along BRAKE will flash on the dashboard and the car will stop abruptly.
The head gasket is failing. The vehicle loses power on the freeway and on city streets, putting the driver & passengers at increase risk for collision. The dealer diagnosed the problem. We've had warning lights & symptoms since early in 2024, with no success in resolving the problem. Coil pack replaced in December 2024 and again in Feb 2025.
While driving down a main road, with no other vehicles or obstacles around/in front of me, the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) beeped/flashed and my car came to almost a dead stop in the middle of the road. This happened without warning, or any previous warning/issues. Luckily no accident happened, as I don't believe a vehicle was behind me (but this could've gone horribly wrong had there been). It was a very windy day. I took it to a Honda dealership the same week, they found no issues and also could not reproduce this. I called Honda Customer Service, who was apologetic, but really no help, and only filed a complaint for me. I see this as being a high potential safety hazard for accidents, etc., and it makes me nervous now driving my vehicle, especially since this is something I cannot turn off. I wanted to file a report here as well, in hopes that investigations are happening for this issue.
Multiple times when driving the vehicle will slam on the brakes without warning when there is nothing in front of the vehicle. I have taken it to Honda multiple times and they cannot fix it due to being unable to recreate the spontaneous issue. Also, they did try to recalibrate the sensor, and it still did not work. I don't feel safe driving this car and can't sell it knowing it is dangerous.
Vehicle head gasket blown and fuel injection problem $6,700 repair. Merging on to the highway the car wouldn’t accelerate and went into limp mode. Mechanic found water in one of the cylinders after pressure testing the coolant system. Only 97,000 miles on vehicle. This vehicle has been an in town driver. This should not have happened.
Fuel injector malfunction in 2017 Honda CRV EX. Getting all the warning lights. Mostly it shows Emission system problems.
I started vehicle and all warning lights on dash popped up and began scrolling through/flashing. As a vehicle owner, I was startled as it was unsettling to see all the warnings pop up. It appeared every safety feature/component on the vehicle was compromised. I immediately contacted the local Honda dealership as they suggested diagnostics were needed. Dealership invoice states "Diagnose check engine light - pull codes, diagnose to failure". Dealership invoice further states "Tech Verified Concern. Tech scanned system for codes and found code P0301 stored for misfire cylinder. Tech ran air fuel test and failures came back on Cylinders 1 and 3. Tech diagnosed to failing injectors, recommend replacing". After doing some research, it appears this particular vehicle has a history with similar problems. I have a product update letter from December 2018 which refers to the P0301 code. In addition, I have a Warranty Extension letter dated July 2019, which refers to the same issue and the P0301 code. The letter states that to ensure confidence in the product, the powertrain warranty was extended from the original 5 year/60,000 miles to 6 years with unlimited mileage from the original sale date. Unfortunately, my vehicle is a 2017, so although I qualify under the mileage I do not qualify under the 6 year time frame. The current mileage on my vehicle is 56,000 miles.
Engine was overheating due to head gasket failure. Engine overheat happened suddenly when driving on highway and had to slow down and stop. Problem has been confirmed by two Honda dealers and one local mechanic with full inspection. Engine overheat massage showed.
Failed fuel injectors. This is a common issue in many 2017-18 CRVs with numerous complaints. This is a safety risk as it has caused a forced shutdown of numerous safety features including: all anti-collision systems, lane departure sensing, traction control, etc The problem has been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No
Within the past 2 months, while driving the car I have experienced 2 instances with the CMBS system unexpectedly applying the brakes, even though there was no obstacles it's path.
The rear windshield of the car exploded during a routine drive without any apparent cause. The car was inspected by a Montgomery County police officer and was driven to the local Honda dealership. The local Honda dealership could not offer any additional insights into the root cause of the incident.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while her husband was driving approximately 70 MPH, several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle started losing motive power. The contact stated that her husband depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate above 50 MPH. The contact stated that while ascending an incline, the vehicle failed to perform as needed. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 144,699.
All dashboard lights ( warnings) will light up and has stayed on for 4 days. Will randomly clear on its own. Car will also jerk while accelerating speed from 30 to 40 miles and above. Car has been inspected by a mechanic shop and has checked fuses and has had a tune up. This has happened over several months this year starting back in March. Issue still continues. Mechanical shop has reported 3 more cars like mine Honda CRV has come in with the same issue and issue remains unknown and unresolved at this time.
So for over a year my dash lights and I mean every light from tire pressure to ABS brake to lane assist every light was on. Then about three months four months ago it began going into limp mode just driving down the road. This is a 2017 Honda CRV over 100,000 miles on it took it into Honda of Hennessy in Woodstock Georgia. They said that it needed fuel injectors which over 300,000 recalls were done for the same Thing except mine cost me $2200 to fix what has happened to Honda. Before I could get it to a dealership because I live over an hour and a half away, the car would just shut down and I would have to pull over stop the car crank it back up hold my breath and go till the next time it would go into limp mode
My 2017 CR-V (~$80k miles) will randomly fire every system or warning alert on the dashboard. This includes vital or important alerts like Brakes, Check engine light, Tire pressure, etc. There has been no way to reset it, and it persists through car restarts, system reboots, and driving. The first time this happened was [XXX], and I was able to reset it. However, it has returned a month and a half later ([XXX]) and there has been no remedy or reset that has worked. This issue is extremely dangerous, as it completely mitigates the safety features put in place for this vehicle. With all of the system warnings misfiring and no way to reset or check which are legitimate versus a complication, I am putting myself and others at risk if I drive. I will not know if there is a true issue with a tire, my engine, my brakes... I need my car but am wary of driving it now to keep myself and others safe. It also makes some features inaccessible (i.e., cruise control). I conducted further research prior to taking it to the dealership to better understand the potential cause and what could be done. After conducting that research, it seems this is a VERY common and fairly well-known issue. I have linked one of several forums demonstrating the scope of this issue. Example forum: [XXX] The system misfires are being diagnosed as issues with the fuel injectors, and owners are getting told to replace those fuel injectors to remedy the issue (cost of which equals around $1,400-2,200). Few also report that following installation of new fuel injectors, the issue has come back. Not everyone has ~$2k to fix an issue that is so common it should have already been addressed by Honda. Fuel injectors are bad. $2300 at the dealership to fix it. Mine went out in my driveway so I guess I’m lucky. There are a ton of these on the road and many are having this exact problem.
2017 Honda CRV 54290 Miles now Fuel Injector need Replacement. it cost all warning light on. make not safe to drive.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the spark plugs were replaced; however, the failure returned soon after repair. The independent mechanic was notified and informedof the contact of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The contact performed a VIN search on the NHTSA website and discovered that the vehicle was not included in the recall. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 131,000.
2017 HONDA CRV had several warning lights came on and dealer indicated it was fuel injection problem. Dealer charged $ 1500 and fixed problem. Again this year same warnings light came on. Dealer is indicating it's due to Timimg chain issue and dealer wants to pull parts from Engibe to see what the problem is and depending on what the problem is fix it. Dealer wants to charge more money depending on what they find and is high cost item. Delaer is not specific.
Vehicle braked to a sudden stop while crossing intersection which was completely clear of any traffic. The road surface had street car rail lines which were well maintained and even. We were lucky to be wearing seat belts at the time. This is the second occasion it happened. I pray that it will not happen during freeway driving speed. Please give this your attention for a quick resolution before someone gets hurt. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, several unknown messages were displayed, and unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted; however, the multiple messages and warning lights remained displayed on the instrument panel. The contact drove the vehicle to the residence. The vehicle remained undriven for two weeks. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed; however, the fuel injectors, gaskets, and throttle were replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
With 82,300 miles on the Odometer, my 2017 Honda CRV Touring AWD started misfiring and displayed a check engine light for a P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire detected. All 4 injectors had failed displaying Cylinder 1-4 as Fail(Rich) under the dealership diagnostic. This left me with a $2,000 repair bill at the Honda dealership. “DIAGNOSE CUSTOMER CONCERN: checked car. confirmed complaint. dtc p0301 cylinder 1 misfire stored. performed AF terst and found all 4 cylinders running rich. Recommend replacing injectors The analysis of the various functions of the components of a vehicle to determine if they are operating properly or have recorded faults which need to be corrected.” Honda refuses to reimburse me or even a partial reimbursement for something that should be recalled on this vehicles as being way too common on a daily basis.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact exited the vehicle, left the door open, and the vehicle started to reverse independently. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle crashed into a tree. The contact confirmed that the vehicle was in the park when it rolled away. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the air bags had not deployed. A Police report was filed. The vehicle was drivable and was taken back to the residence. No injury was sustained. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.
I have had my car taken to Honda dealerships with an issue of all my warning lights would come on. No one has been able to fix the issue. The spark plugs, battery, air filters, have been replaced and diagnostic tests were done. The warning lights would stop for a couple of months and then start again. The last time all the warning lights came on my car began to stall and not got over 8 - 10 mph when I would start to drive. I would pull over, turn off my car, restart, then it would be ok to drive. The part that scared me was when I was on a busy highway, traveling close to 65 - 70 mph and my car stalled/lost power. Thankfully, I was able to pull to the side of the highway without getting myself or anyone hurt. I have since stopped driving on the highway. The last mechanic (Honda certified) has told me my head gasket needs replaced. Not something I would expect but it does explain a lot of the issues I have been having. My car is parked until I am able to get it repaired.
We bought this vehicle new in 2017 and now have about 78K miles on it. Since we have owned it there have been SEVERAL (at least 7) occasions where we are driving along on the highway at 35-70MPH (depending on the speed limit) and the emergency forward collision braking system suddenly applies the brakes for no reason. This has happened during daylight and nightime on the open road with no vehicles or objects anywhere in front of us or close to the side of us and, on a few occasions, nearly causing vehicles behind us to crash into us because the brakes come on unexpectedly and we are unable to do anything about it. Early on, we reported this a couple times to our Honda dealer and we were told, "that can happen if there is blowing rain or snow or even a bird flying buy, it is normal so don't worry about it." Well, it IS something to worry about because it randomly happens again and again, and we recently almost had a huge accident on Interstate 79 because of it! What is most bothersome about this DEFECT in design or implementation is that the driver has no way of knowing in advance it is going to happen because it is a random occurrence with no rhyme or reason behind it, and there is nothing the driver can do to prevent it or minimize its effects! PLEASE, investigate this and force it to be fixed because lives could easily be lost from this phantom braking if none have been lost yet!
Braking system. Vehicle brakes did not brake and vehicle skidded over gravel and a driveway culvert. Vehicle was considered total loss because the airbag went off. My safety and others' was put at risk. Other questions, answer is UNKNOWN.
Honda CRV has a software glitch where all warning lights start flashing. This has happened 3 times in past one year . Dealer wanted $150 to $200 for diagnostics . When I checked internet there are multiple users who are having this issue . When I contacted Honda they said they can do nothing as it’s not an active recall issue . The entire system needs to be updated by Honda free of charge for existing customers as this is a major safety issue
While turning the steering wheel to make small adjustments in direction, the steering wheel has some resistance to a point and then loses resistance causing some over steer. I would use the term "sticky steering" to describe it. The problem can be reproduced any time. Symptoms first appeared around January, 2025. No error/warning lights on dash. Vehicle has not been inspected by anyone.
