THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. I AM LISTING DETAILS PERTAINING TO TODAY BECAUSE I CANNOT RECALL THE PRIOR DATES (HOWEVER THEY WERE WITHIN THE PAST YEAR). BASICALLY THE VAN SPONTANEOUSLY STARTED ITSELF. MY CHILDREN WERE PLAYING OUTSIDE AND THEY RAN INSIDE SAYING "MOM THE VAN IS ON". I WENT TO LOOK AND THE VAN IS RUNNING BUT IN THE "OFF" POSITION. THERE IS NO KEY IN THE IGNITION. APPLYING THE BRAKE TURNED IT OFF. I DO NOT HAVE A REMOTE STARTER AND MY ONLY SET OF KEYS WERE INSIDE THE HOUSE. LET ME STRESS AGAIN THAT IT STARTED BY ITSELF AND WAS RUNNING WITH NO KEY IN THE IGNITION. I AM CONCERNED NOW THAT THIS COULD OCCUR WHILE THE GARAGE IS CLOSED AND FILL OUR HOME WITH CARBON MONOXIDE! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE BRAKES INDEPENDENTLY ENGAGED. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS BUT NO DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 23,000.
THE LIFTGATE STOPED WORKING. *JS
WAS ON THE FREEWAY AT AROUND 60-65 MPH AND ALTHOUGH ACCELERATING I COULD FEEL THE BRAKES BRAKING EVEN THOUGH I WAS IN NO WAY APPLYING MY FOOT TO THE BRAKE. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS JUST DRIVING LOCALLY TO THE STORE. WILL BE DRIVING AS NORMAL AND YOU CAN FEEL THE VAN SLOW ITSELF EVEN THOUGH I AM ACCELERATING WITH NO FOOT ON THE BRAKE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE TRAVELING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY AND THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS MOVED TO THE SHOULDER WHERE IT WAS SHUT DOWN. AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE IT FAILED TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO STATED THE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THE ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING ON ALL AVAILABLE CYLINDERS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
THE GAS-FILLED STRUTS ON THE REAR LIFT GATE OF MY HONDA ODYSSEY MINIVAN HAVE COMPLETELY FAILED. THE REAR LIFT GATE TO THE MINIVAN NOW FALLS SHUT WITH A VERY DANGEROUS SPEED AND FORCE. THE LIFT GATE IS VERY HEAVY AND I AM CERTAIN IT WOULD SEVERELY INJURE MY 4 YEAR OLD BOYS IF IT WAS DROPPED OR ACCIDENTALLY LET GO. HONDA HAS RECALLED OTHER 2008 AND 2009 GAS-FILLED STRUTS FOR EX-L AND TOURING MODELS BUT CLAIMS THAT MY GAS-FILLED STRUTS ON MY EX MODEL ARE NOT AS COMMON OF A FAILURE. I'M NOT BUYING IT. IT'S A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. *TR

AFTER ABOUT 5-20 MINUTES OF DRIVING WHEN I COME TO A STOP RATHER IT BE FLAT ROAD , PARKING LOT OR SLIGHT DOWN SLOPE I HEAR REALLY LOUD METALLIC LIKE GRINDING AND SQUEALING NOISE. THIS ALONG WITH MY OTHER COMPLAINT OF THE VAN BRAKING BY ITSELF HAS ME VERY CONCERNED CONSIDERING THAT THIS VAN DOES HAVE A WHEELCHAIR LIFT AND IS PRIMARILY USED TO TRANSPORT A DISABLED ADULT IN A WHEELCHAIR. *TR
THE VSA LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AND OFF FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS, BUT USER MANUAL SAYS IT IS OKAY FOR "NORMAL DRIVING". WHEN I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 40-45 MPH, THE VSA LIGHTS WAS ON. I KEPT DRIVING NORMALLY. THEN WE I TRIED TO APPLY BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN, THE BRAKE LIGHT TURNED ON. AFTER I RELEASED THE BRAKE, THE CAR SEEMED TO APPLIED BRAKE ON ITSELF EVEN HARDER. IT HAPPENED MANY TIMES DURING THE PAST FEW WEEKS AND THIS TIME I DEFINITELY FELT IT. *TR
WE TRIED TO START OUR VAN EARLY SATURDAY MORNING 6/15/13 AND IT WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. AFTER JUMPING IT, WE REALIZED WE HADN'T LEFT ANY LIGHTS ON SO WE DROVE IT TO THE NEAREST HONDA DEALERSHIP. WE WERE TOLD THERE'S BEEN A RASH OF THIS ISSUE RECENTLY AND TO JUST MAKE SURE WE TURN OFF THE AIR CONDITIONER BEFORE TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND WE SHOULD BE OKAY. WE DROVE 2 HOURS AWAY FROM HOME AND STAYED OVERNIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING THE CAR DIDN'T START AGAIN EVEN THOUGH WE HAD TURNED OFF THE AIR CONDITIONER. WE BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY FOR THE CAR THINKING IT WAS THE BATTERY. THE NEXT WEEKEND THE CAR DIED AGAIN. THIS TIME WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER. THEY TOLD US THAT THE A/C COMPRESSOR RELAY WAS STUCK AND CAUSED THE A/C SYSTEM TO OVER PRESSURIZE RELEASING FREON INTO THE ATMOSPHERE AND DISCHARGING OUR BATTERY. THE DEALER SAID THAT THIS HAS BEEN A RECALL IN OTHER MODELS BUT NOT OUR VAN. I FEEL THAT, ALTHOUGH WE WERE NOT IN IMMEDIATE DANGER, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THE ODYSSEY AND ALL OTHER OWNERS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. *TR
LIFT STRUTS ON BACK HATCH QUIT WORKING SUDDENLY WITH NO PRIOR PROBLEMS. *TR
WHILE CRUISING AT ABOUT 35 MPH ON LEVEL ROAD THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATED, APPARENTLY THE BRAKES CAME ON AUTOMATICALLY WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. AT THE TIME OF THE OCCURRENCE THE LEFT REAR TIRE WAS A FEW PSI LESS THAN THE OTHER TIRES AND THE LOW TIRE INDICATOR WAS ON (27 PSI ON LEFT REAR, 33 PSI ON OTHER TIRES). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE, CAUSING A CHAIN REACTION. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BURNS TO BOTH HANDS FROM THE AIR BAG FRAGMENTS. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET ABOUT 40MPH WITH MY FOOT ONLY ON THE GAS PEDAL, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE BRAKES SLAMMED ON, SLOWING ME DOWN RAPIDLY. LUCKILY THERE WAS NOBODY BEHIND ME. THIS HAPPENED ON MY WAY HOME 2 MORE TIMES. THE SUBSEQUENT TIMES I WAS DRIVING SLOWER. THEE WERE NEVER ANY WARNING LIGHTS. THERE WAS NO SMELLS. AFTER THE 3 TIMES DURING THAT 1 TRIP, IT DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. I DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT HONDA DEALERSHIP TODAY AND AM AFRAID THAT THEY WONT BE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AGAIN. I AM TERRIFIED THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR. IT WAS LIKE THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF MY CONTROL. WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM MERGING ONTO THE FREEWAY, IN FRONT OF A SEMI AND THE BRAKES GET SLAMMED ON AGAIN? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE JERKED ABNORMALLY AS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS FLASHED RANDOMLY. THE VEHICLE ALSO STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT THEN SHIFTED INTO PARK AND NEUTRAL BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED BUT TO NO AVAIL, THE FAILURE LATER RECURRED. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 111785.
IN JUNE 2013 HAD MY RIGHT REAR TIRE BLOWOUT DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT ROUGHLY 40MPH ON A CLEAR DAY. REPLACED THE TIRE SINCE THE SIDEWALL WAS DESTROYED. TOOK VEHICLE TO FIRESTONE IN NOVEMBER 2013 TO CHECK BAD VIBRATION AND 3 REMAINING TIRES ALL HAD HUGE SIDEWALL BUBBLES PROTRUDING. HAD TO REPLACE ALL THREE TIRES WITH ONLY 36,000 MILES ON THEM (WARRANTY FOR 65,000) BOUGHT THE TIRES AT WAL-MART IN FEB 2012 - GOODYEAR VIVA AUTHORITY 235/65/R16 DOT M746JN1R4111. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR LIFT GATE INDEPENDENTLY CLOSED WITH AN ABNORMALLY LARGE AMOUNT OF FORCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE STRUTS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
I TRIED TO OPEN THE TRUNK AND REALIZED IT FELT LIKE DEAD WEIGHT. I LIFTED IT, CLOSED IT SLOWLY AND TRIED AGAIN. I'M GUESSING THE PNEUMATIC LIFT IS NOT WORKING. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS IF I LIFTED IT AND LET IT GO WITHOUT REALIZING THE WEIGHT. FOR NOW, I CANNOT USE THE TRUNK. *TR
SPARK PLUGGED FOULED IN MAY. OIL CONSUMPTION WAS AT LEAST A QUART PER 1000 MILES AT THE TIME (EVERY FEW WEEKS OF DRIVING). HAD TO REPLACE SPARK PLUG AND EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION REMAINS THE SAME OR GREATER. I AM AFRAID THAT OIL CONSUMPTION WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. SPOKE TO HONDA MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY EITHER SAY OIL CONSUMPTION IS NORMAL OR WAIT UNTIL FAILURE FOR EXTENDED WARRANTY TO KICK IN. *TR
I JUST BOUGHT THE VAN IT IS A CARFAX ONE OWNER PRE OWNED 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY BOUGHT AT THE SAME DEALER IT CAME FROM SO THEY WERE THE ONES TO SERVICE IT IT'S WHOLE LIFE 72,000 WHEN I GOT IT. I HAVE TO KEEP TAKING IT BACK BECAUSE IT WON'T GO STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD WITHOUT PULLING EVEN AFTER THEY PUT NEW TIRES ON IT PLUS DID AN ALIGNMENT. ADD THIS TO THE OTHER PROBLEMS I'M HAVING LIKE A VIBRATION BETWEEN 45 AND 52, OIL SMOKE COMING OUT THE EXHAUST WHEN YOU FIRST IT UP. HONDA SAYS ITS OK TO USE 1 QUART OF MOTOR OIL EVERY ONE THOUSAND MILES NOW TO ME THAT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS VAN AND HONDA FOR LETTING PEOPLE DRIVE THERE VEHICLES LIKE THIS. I HAVE LOOKED AT SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS HONDA MINIVAN THAT ONLINE WITH EVEN MORE PROBLEMS THAN I HAVE AND ENOUGH IS ENOUGH THIS IS JUST NOT RIGHT. *TR
THE REAR TAILGATE STRUT FAILED ON MY ODYSSEY EX- IMPORTANT TO DIFFERENTIATE FROM THE EX-L, WHICH WAS AFFECTED BY A RECALL FOR THE SAME THING (NHTSA CAMPAIGN #12V062000). THE RECALL DID NOT APPLY TO THE EX NOR LX MODELS. PROBLEM IS THE EX-L, EX & LX MODELS SHARE THE SAME STRUT PART #74820-SHJ-A21, PRICE $63.91/EACH. THE PARTS INFORMATION IS RIGHT OFF HONDA'S OWN WEBSITE. THE RECALL MAKES NO MENTION OF FAILURES TO ANY MOTORS, GENERATORS OR POWER LOCKS. THE ONLY REFERENCE IS TO THE STRUT ITSELF. IF THE STRUT IS THE PROBLEM, WHY DOESN'T THE RECALL APPLY TO ALL '08 ODYSSEYS IF ALL ODYSSEYS SHARE THE SAME PART? I CALLED HONDA FOR AN EXPLANATION & THE REP SAID THEY WOULD ONLY PAY FOR REPAIRS TO MODELS COVERED BY THE RECALL. SINCE MY VEHICLE WASN'T, THEY WOULDN'T PAY &, AS IT STANDS NOW, I'M OUT $213.71, WHICH IS THE COST FOR BOTH PARTS & LABOR. I BELIEVE I AM ENTITLED TO REIMBURSEMENT OF THE FULL COST OF REPLACING THE STRUTS & I ALSO BELIEVE ALL '08 ODYSSEY MODELS SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM AS FAILURE OF THE PART POSES A SERIOUS RISK OF INJURY TO ANYONE STANDING UNDER THE DOOR, WHICH HAPPENS ALOT WHILE LOADING/UNLOADING THE VEHICLE. *TR
2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE TAILGATE STRUTS ISSUES. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE TAILGATE STRUTS BROKE AND LOST THEIR GAS DUE TO LEAKAGE. THE CONSUMER STATED A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR VEHICLES WITH POWER TAILGATES. HE BELIEVED EVEN THE VANS WITHOUT POWER TAILGATES, SHOULD BE RECALLED.
POWER-TAILGATE STRUTS HAVE FAILED AND TRUNK WILL NOT REMAIN OPEN. WHEN MY WIFE LIFTED THE TRUNK IT NEARLY FELL ON HER AND HIT HER HEAD. THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY TOURING MODELS AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD EXTEND TO NON-TOURING MODEL AS WELL (I HAVE A LX 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRIM LEVEL). I CALLED HONDA AND THEY SAID THAT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT I BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD BE. IN ORDER TO REPAIR IT, I WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN SUDDENLY FOR NO REASON THE BRAKES CAME ON BRINGING THE CARS SPEED DOWN TO UNDER 20 MPH. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO CATCH MY BREATH. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, I PROCEEDED SLOWLY UNTIL I FELT SAFE TO TRY IT AGAIN. NO FURTHER INCIDENTS UNTIL LAST MAY, AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT UNTO A CITY STREET, AS I APPROACHED 40MPH, THE BRAKES SUDDENLY CAME ON. NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME. HONDA SAYS THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CORRECT THIS UNTIL MARCH 2014? (IT HAPPENED 1 MORE TIME). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TAILGATE FELL RAPIDLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY, AFTER IT WAS LIFTED UP. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE STRUTS HAD LEAKED GAS, WHICH CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE 71,061....UPDATED 05/22/13 *BF THE CONSUMER WAS REIMBURSED. UPDATED 05/30/13
ALL FIVE ENGINES MOUNTS ARE BAD AND HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT ONLY 46,000 MILES. DRONING, VIBRATING AND LUGGING , SO BRAKES THAT RATTLE WHEN BRAKING HARD. NO WAY ENGINE MOUNTS SHOT AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE GAS-FILLED STRUTS THAT HELPED TO RAISE AND SUPPORT THE LIFTGATE OF TRANSPORTED EQUIPPED FAILED, CAUSING AN UNEXPECTED CLOSURE OF THE DOOR, WHICH STRUCK THE CONTACT BUT DID NOT RESULT IN ANY INJURY. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V062000 (STRUCTURE). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 64,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR LIFTGATE FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT PRESSURIZED GAS WAS LEAKING FROM THE STRUTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V062000 (STRUCTURE). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
I BROUGHT THE ODYSSEY TO HONDA, SPOKE WITH SERVICE ADVISOR. I TOLD THE ADVISOR THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL WAS TOO FAR, ABOUT 75% OF RANGE TO INITIATE BRAKING. THIS WAS THE SAME CONDITION THAT THE VAN WAS IN ABOUT A YEAR AGO WHEN THE ("AIR IN BRAKE SYSTEM" RECALL WAS APPLIED). I ASKED HONDA TO BLEED THE BRAKES AND RE-APPLY THE SEALS CALLED OUT IN THE RECALL. HONDA REFUSED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE OR APPLY THE RECALL A SECOND TIME (AS A RECALL CONDITION). HONDA DID RECOMMEND THAT I PAY FOR A BRAKE INSPECTION AND SERVICE. HONDA'S RECALL REPAIR WAS INSUFFICIENT AND HAS LEFT THE VEHICLE IN THE SAME DANGEROUS CONDITION OF LEAKING AIR INTO THE BRAKES AS IT WAS BEFORE THE RECALL. I PLAN TO BLEED THE BRAKES MYSELF RATHER THAN PAY HONDA A SMALL FORTUNE TO DO SOMETHING THEY SHOULD BE DOING FREE OF CHARGE FOR THERE FAULTY DESIGN. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF NHTSA WOULD LIKE TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE TO DOCUMENT THE RECURRING PROBLEM, BEFORE I BLEED THE BRAKES. IN THE FUTURE I WOULD URGE THE NHTSA TO HOLD MANUFACTURERS LIABLE TO EITHER IMPLEMENT A REAL FIX, SUCH AS A NEW VSA MODULATOR THAT DOESN'T LEAK OR THAT THEY SHOULD REQUIRE THE MANUFACTURER TO APPLY THEIR 'BAND-AID FIX' RECALL OF BLEEDING THE BRAKES AND ADDING SEALS AS MANY TIMES AS THE CUSTOMER REQUESTS. BLEEDING THE BRAKES IS ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX, THIS NEEDS TO BE IMPLEMENTED ON A REGULAR BASIS, ITS NOT A ONE TIME FIX. *TR
EXPLODING SUNROOF. GLASS SUNROOF EXPLODED OUTWARD WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. NO OTHER VEHICLES OR OVER PASSES NEARBY. RURAL AREA. OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS 83 DEGREES. AC/C WAS SET AT 73 DEGREES. CAR HAD BEEN H AND-WASHED ONE DAY EARLIER. NO FLAWS WERE OBSERVED IN GLASS SUNROOF WHILE WASHING OR DRYING THE VEHICLE. HAD SUNROOF INTERNAL SLIDER BEEN OPEN AT THE TIME OF THE GLASS EXPLOSION, THE DRIER AND FRONT PASSENGER COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED AND WE COULD HAVE EASILY HAD AN ACCIDENT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW IN THE GLASS SUNROOF. A COMPUTER SEARCH REVEALED OTHER REPORTED INCIDENTS WHICH WERE NEARLY IDENTICAL ON SOME HONDA VEHICLES AND SOME OTHER MAKE AND MODELS. THE TAIL GATE OF MY 2008 ODYSSEY DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY THE GAS POWER STRUTS THAT HELP OPEN AND CLOSE THE TAIL GATE HAVE INTERNAL FAILURE AND NEED TO BE REPLACED SO THE HONDA DEALER SAYS. DURING BRAKING BETWEEN 20 - 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE SURGES FORWARD. THIS HAS BEEN MOST NOTICEABLE WHEN GOING DOWNHILL AND BRAKING. YESTERDAY (3/4/2013), I LIFTED OPEN THE TRUNK, ON MY HONDA ODYSSEY 2008 (EX-L). I NOTICED THAT IT WAS A LITTLE HEAVY TO LIFT. WHEN I LIFTED IT ALL THE WAY UP AND LET IT GO, IT IMMEDIATELY CAME DOWN ON MY HEAD. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO CATCH IT BEFORE IT HIT MY HEAD. THE TRUNK DOOR WOULD NOT STAY IN THE OPEN POSITION, AND COMES DOWN TO A HARD CLOSE IF NOT HELD OPEN BY HAND. THE POWER SLIDING DOORS WILL SOMETIMES NOT CLOSE... ONE WILL START TO CLOSE WHEN WE PUSH THE LEVER, THEN SHUDDER OR JERK AND THEN REVERSE ITSELF SO THAT IT IS FULLY OPEN ONCE AGAIN. THIS STARTED FIRST WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR, AND HAS RECENTLY STARTED HAPPENING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AS WELL. WE BROUGHT IT TO A DEALER AND SEEMED QUITE FAMILIAR WITH THE SYMPTOMS, SUGGESTING THAT THE MIDDLE SET OF ROLLERS ON THE DOOR WERE CAUSING THE ISSUE. I WENT TO OPEN AND LIFT UP THE REAR LIFT GATE TO RETRIEVE ITEMS IN THE BACK. WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE REAR GATE CAME DOWN ABRUPTLY AND STRUCK ME ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD AND HURT MY NECK AS WELL. *TR

WE OWN THE ODYSSEY EX-L WITH A MANUAL TAILGATE. THE TALIGATE HAS STOPPED OPENING TO ITS MAXIMUM HEIGHT. THE SHORTENED DISTANCE IS NOT OBVIOUS UNTIL YOU PROCEED UNDER THE DOOR AND HIT YOUR HEAD ON THE REAR TAILGATE. I'M PROBABLY LIKE MOST ODYSSEY OWNERS--MORE FOCUSED ON HER CHILDREN IN A PARKING LOT THAN THE HEIGHT OF MY TAILGATE--BUT THE HEADACHE THAT FOLLOWED HITTING MY HEAD ON THE TAILGATE THIS MORNING MADE ME FILE THIS COMPLAINT. USUALLY HAPPENS AS TRANSMISSION IS IN THE PROCESS OF DOWNSHIFTING FROM 5TH TO 4TH GEAR. WHEN CONDITION OCCURS, VEHICLE WILL SLOW APPROXIMATELY 20-30 MPH FROM ORIGINAL SPEED PRIOR TO BRAKING. I MERGED ON TO THE HIGHWAY GOING APPROX. 50MPH WHEN MY ODYSSEY MINIVAN STARTED TO BRAKE ON IT'S OWN. I LOOKED AT MY PANEL TO MAKE SURE I WAS IN 'D' (DRIVE AND NOT 1 OR 2) AND CHECKED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE, THEN THE VAN ACCELERATED AND THEN BRAKED A COUPLE TIMES THEN IT BRAKED REALLY HARD MAKING THE VAN DO A NOSE DIVE. THIS ALL HAPPENED WITHIN ABOUT A MINUTE OR LESS. I WAS NOT IN CONTROL OF THE VAN, IT DID ALL THIS ON IT'S OWN. I HAD JUST PICKED UP MY 2 YEAR OLD FROM PRESCHOOL AND I HAD MY 10 MONTH OLD REAR FACING AS WELL. IF THERE WAS SOMETHING I COULD HAVE DONE, I WOULD HAVE. I HIT MY FLASHERS AND PULLED OVER. BUT LIKE I SAID, I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND I FELT LIKE A SITTING DUCK WITH MY BABIES IN THE BACK SO I STARTED DRIVING BECAUSE THERE WAS AN OFF RAMP JUST A LITTLE AHEAD OF ME, AND WHEN I REACHED APPROX 25MPH THE VAN DOVE ON THE BRAKES AGAIN. I HEARD A STRANGE NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHEN I ACCELERATE. I TOOK IT TO HEADQUARTER HONDA WHO DOES MY SERVICE. I WAS TOLD BY CARLOS THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO DIAGNOSE IT AND THE THERE WOULD BE A CHARGE FOR IT. WHEN HE GOT BACK TO ME HE SAID THAT IT WAS THE LEFT AXEL. I SAID THAT I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT. I SAID THAT EVEN THOUGH IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I ACCELERATE IT IS THE AXEL? HE SAID YES. I LEFT IT TO GET IT DONE. I WAS TOLD A FEW HOURS LATER THAT IT WAS READY. I PICKED IT UP AND ABOUT FIVE MILES AWAY IT STARTED MAKING A LOUD NOISE AND OIL WENT EVERYWHERE. THE CAR BEHIND ME HAD OIL ALL OVER THE WINDSHIELD. THE AXEL REPAIR DIDN'T GO WELL. THEY CAME AND GOT THE CAR. LATER THAT DAY THEY TOLD ME THE CAR WAS READY AGAIN. WHEN I PICKED IT UP THE ENGINE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. THE MANAGER CAME OVER AND I TOLD HIM THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE. HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NOT THE ENGINE. HE SAID THAT HONDA ENGINES NEVER GO BAD. I BELIEVED HIM BECAUSE I LOOKED UP HONDA ENGINE PROBLEMS AND COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. THEY KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THE NEXT DAY THEY CALLED AND SAID THAT IT WAS THE TENSIONER AND THEY RECOMMENDED THAT I GET THE TIMING BELT CHANGED. I TOLD THEM THAT I WAS COMING TO GET MY CAR BECAUSE IT SEEMED LIKE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. CARLOS CALLED ME BACK AND SAID THAT THEY WOULD FIX THE TENSIONER AT NO CHARGE BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE PROBLEMS THEY CAUSED ME. THEY ENDED UP REBUILDING THE ENGINE. NEW ENGINE IS CONSUMING A LOT OF OIL. DEALER DOESN'T WANT TO FIX PROBLEM. I HAVE MUCH MORE INFORMATION. *TR
CAR MAKES A LOUD WHINING/HUMMING NOISE WHEN IN IDLE AND MOVING POSITIONS (LIKE A FAINT FIRE ENGINE SIREN). USUALLY HAPPENS ON COLDER MORNINGS (IN NC) AND CONTINUES FOR AT LEAST 15 MINS WHILE DRIVING BEFORE IT STOPS. AFTER RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, I SEE THAT HUNDREDS OF OTHERS HAVE THE SAME EXACT ISSUE WITH THEIR SIMILAR MODEL YEAR HONDA ODYSSEY'S, YET HONDA HAS ONLY ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN AND NOT A RECALL FOR AN OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THE PARTS. *TR
