Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Remedy Status
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.
HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 532,633 MY 2006-2007 ACCENT, ENTOURAGE, SONATA, MY 2007 AZERA, ELANTRA AND SANTA FE, MY 2005-2007 TUCSON AND MY 2007-2008 VERACRUZ VEHICLES. THE STOP LAMP SWITCH IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES MAY MALFUNCTION. A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A STOP LAMP SWITCH MALFUNCTION MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
Remedy Status
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 29, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON. HYUNDAI ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM. THE DEALER WILL NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE WITHOUT A DIAGNOSTIC FEE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE A RECALL SO THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND ASSIST.
SUN VISORS BREAK OFF AT THE CONNECTION POINT AND AND THEN FLOP DOWN BLOCKING YOUR VIEW OF THE ROAD. THIS IS FROM JUST NORMAL USE. THE DRIVERS SIDE VISOR BROKE LAST YEAR. I HAD IT UNINSTALLED BECAUSE A NEW ONE, ( WITH SAME DEFECTIVE PLASTIC CONNECTION ), COSTS $150.. PLUS INSTALLATION. THE PASSENGER SIDE VISOR JUST BROKE OFF THIS MONTH.
MY SON HAS A 2006 HYUNDAI ACCENT AND LAST WEEK THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT WENT ON AND HAS REMAINED ON EVER SINCE. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY MY FATHER AND HAS APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE READ OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE AND IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM.
THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SUN VISORS ON THE 2006 ACCENT WILL NO LONGER STAY IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION. THE VISORS NOW HANG LOOSELY AND LIMIT VISIBILITY WHEN DRIVING, THE SWINGING BACK AND FORTH WHILE ACCELERATING AND BRAKING CAN BE DISTRACTING AND IS UNSAFE. I HAVE LOOKED TO PURCHASE THE ORIGINAL OEM PARTS TO REPLACE, BUT HAVE DISCOVERED THAT HYUNDAI NO LONGER USES THE ORIGINAL PARTS AND THAT NEW VISORS WAS MANUFACTURED. I HAVE FOUND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FOR MULTIPLE HYUNDAI MODELS ON THIS SITE AND ON ARFC.ORG. IT APPEARS THAT HYUNDAI RECOGNIZED A FAULTY PART THAT LEADS TO LIMITED VISIBILITY AND DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING BUT DID NOT ISSUE A RECALL. A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED.
GOT THE CAR WHEN MY MOM DIED IN 2015. SHE RECEIVED A RECALL ON THE AIR BAGS BUT WHEN I TOOK IT DOWN TO GET IT FIXED THE GUY TOLD ME AND MY DAUGHTER IN LAW THAT I WAS A WEEK TOO LATE TO GET IT FIXED AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT NOW IF I WANTED IT FIXED. I DON'T HAVE THE CARD THAT WAS MAILED ANYMORE BUT HOW IS THIS SAFE FOR ME, MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS?
I'M DRIVING MY CAR FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS NOW AND THE LIGHTS FOR THE AIR BAGS ARE STILL ON AND HAVE NEVER WENT OFF. SO I THOUGHT, SUPPOSEDLY MAY BE THE FUSE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT SO FAR TO THIS DATE I CANNOT DETERMINE WHAT'S THE ISSUE OTHER THAN A FAULTY AIR BAG SYSTEM. NO I HAVEN'T TAKEN THE CAR TO A DEALER YET, BUT I NEED TO KNOW AM I THE ONLY PERSON HAVING THIS ISSUE.I LOVE THE VEHICLE BESIDES ITS UNINTENTIONAL POOR GAS USAGE I AM A SATISFIED CUSTOMER. BUT PERHAPS MAYBE ITS TIME TO START SEARCHING FOR A MORE EFFICIENT NEWER CAR. BE CAREFUL WHEN BUYING USED CARS EVERYBODY.
I NOTICED THAT MY AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ILLUMINATED. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PASSENGER LOWER CUSHION SENSOR ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (FOR APPROX. $1,000). WAS TOLD THAT NONE OF THE AIRBAGS WOULD WORK IN A COLLISION UNTIL IT WAS REPLACED. SINCE I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE IT NOW, I HAVE NO AIRBAGS. (I ALSO OWN A 2002 HONDA CIVIC AND HONDA JUST RECENTLY REPLACED BOTH FRONT AIRBAGS IN A RECALL.) MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU CHOOSE TO BUY A USED HYUNDAI YOU'RE IN A POSITION TO SPEND AN EXTRA $1000 IF YOU WANT YOUR AIRBAGS TO WORK. YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE THE DEALER DO A CODE CHECK TO BE SURE THAT THE AIR BAGS ARE WORKING. THEN AGAIN, IT COULD BE FINE TODAY AND A B1448 CODE TOMORROW. IT'S SAD THAT THE GOVERNMENT REQUIRES AUTO MAKERS TO INSTALL AIRBAGS, BUT THEY DON'T REQUIRE THAT THEY WORK. FACING A $1000 AIR BAG REPAIR, I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING A NEW OR USED HYUNDAI. *TR
THE BRAKE/STOP LAMP SWITCH HAS FAILED AGAIN. THE SWITCH WAS REPLACED IN 2009 UNDER THE FIRST RECALL ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM. ANOTHER RECALL OCCURRED IN APRIL OF 2013, FOR SELECT 2006 HYUNDAI ACCENTS. MINE WAS NOT COVERED IN THIS SECOND RECALL. THE SWITCH HAS FAILED AGAIN AND I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE SECOND RECALL. *TR

DRIVING DURING NORMAL CONDITIONS AT 45 MPH, FOR NO REASON THE DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR DROPPED DOWN AND IMPAIRED MY VISION. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TRY TO RETURN IT TO ITS NORMAL POSITION WITH NO SUCCESS. I HAVE TRIED VELCRO AND TAPE BUT IT WILL NOT STAY UP. IT IS SERIOUS DRIVING HAZARD, AND JUDGING BY FORUMS ON THE INTERNET, MANY, MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY IT. HYUNDAI SHOULD DO A RECALL AND HAVE THE ISSUE FIXED. *TR
MY DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR ROTATION SUPPORT SNAPPED UPON ROTATING IT'S CLOSED POSITION TO IT'S FORWARD POSITION TOWARDS THE WINDSHIELD. IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN MADE OF PLASTIC. IT NOW HANGS FREELY DOWNWARD BLOCKING MY VIEW COMPLETELY. TURNING IT'S POSITION TO THE LEFT TOWARDS THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW HELPS MY FORWARD VIEW, BUT BLOCKS MY LEFT SIDE VIEW COMPLETELY UNLESS I HUNCH DOWN. THERE IS NO NEUTRAL POSITION TO MOVE THIS VISOR TO UNTIL I CAN GET IT FIXED, WHICH IS CAUSING A SERIOUS DRIVING HAZARD. EVEN A SIMPLE METAL CLIP TO LOCK THE VISOR IN PLACE TEMPORARILY WOULD HAVE BEEN TREMENDOUSLY HELPFUL. *TR
THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WENT ON. MECHANIC HAD TO REPLACE THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT SENSOR TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. AS THIS AIR BAG SENSOR IS BEING INVESTIGATED IN THE HYUNDAI SONATA MODELS, I THINK THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH OTHER MODELS THIS COMPANY OFFERS, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE USING THE SAME SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY IN ALL MODELS. VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR FOR A PROBLEM I HAVE NEVER SEEN IN MANY YEARS OF DRIVING. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 ACCENT. I RECENTLY FOUND OUT IT NEEDS A PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR PANEL REPLACED IN ORDER TO FIX THE AIRBAGS. (THAT IS, MAKE ANY OF THE AIRBAGS WORK) I JUST NOW LEARNED I HAVEN'T HAVEN'T HAD AIRBAGS FOR 2 YEARS.!!!! (ACTUALLY OUR KIDS HAVEN'T --OUR SONS HAD THE CAR AT COLLEGE, DRIVING HOME ON THE INTERSTATE FOR 2.5 HOURS - WITH NO AIRBAGS) THE LIGHT WAS ON. FIRST 2 YEARS AGO. I ASKED MY MECHANIC. THAT MECHANIC NEVER ALERTED ME THAT I HAD TO GO TO A DEALER. MY CURRENT MECHANIC DID - SO WE WENT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER, PAYING THEIR $80 SERVICE FEE JUST FOR THEM TO TELL ME IT WILL COST ME AROUND $960 TO FIX IT!!! I KNOW FROM FORUMS THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND WE HAVE ALL BEEN TOLD ITS A $1000 TO FIX. JUST THE PART IS $700+!!!! I ALSO READ THAT HYUNDAI HAD AIRBAG PROBLEMS WITH 2006 SONATAS AND FIXED THEM. WHY NOT THE ACCENT???? WHY DON'T YOU HAVE TO STAND BEHIND A FAULTY PART ON MULTIPLE CARS? I HAVE A 2006 HYUNDAI ACCENT. THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH HAS GONE OUT ON MY VEHICLE. THIS IS ACTUALLY THE 2ND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. IT WENT OUT THE FIRST TIME IN THE 2007 OR 2008 TIME FRAME. I HAD IT REPLACE UNDER WARRANTY. ABOUT A WEEK AGO THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WENT OUT AGAIN. WHEN I WENT ONTO PEPBOYS WEBSITE AND PUT MY CAR INFORMATION IN THE ALERT OF A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH RECALL CAME UP. I CONTACT HYUNDAI TO SEE IF MY CAR WOULD QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL SINCE MY SWITCH HAS FAILED AND IS A 2006 MODEL. THEY CLAIM MY CAR DOES NOT MEET THE RECALL LIST. I TOLD THEM THAT MY SWITCH HAS ALREADY FAIL AND THEY SAID THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT. I FEEL THAT THEY PUT A BAD SWITCH ON MY CAR AND THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE COVERED MY CAR. I HAVE HAD 2 SWITCH FAIL ON THAT CAR AND THE SECOND WAS PUT IN DURING THE TIME OF THE RECALL COVERED BUT THEY STILL REFUSE TO COVER. MY CAR IS UNSAFE RIGHT NOW UNTIL I HAVE IT FIXED AND HYUNDAI CLAIMS THAT THE PROBLEM PART IS NOT THERE PROBLEM. *TR

DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR WOULD NOT GO UP FOR A YEAR AND HUNG DOWN, AFFECTING MY VISIBILITY AND WAS A HUGE RISK WHEN DRIVING. DUE TO THE VISOR HANGING DOWN, IT EVENTUALLY BECAME WEAK ON THE LEFT CORNER AND WAS HANGING BY THE ELECTRICAL CORDS (FOR THE LIGHT) AND FELL OFF COMPLETELY. NOW I DO NOT HAVE A VISOR AT ALL AND IT AFFECTS MY DRIVING IMMENSELY AS I HAVE NOTHING TO KEEP THE SUN OUT OF MY EYES.
