The contact owns a 2000 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, there was an abnormal odor entering the cabin of the vehicle, causing the contact to be nauseated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that there was no cabin air filter installed in the vehicle. The cabin air filter was not replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was 19,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE FUEL TANK. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO FILL UP THE FUEL TANK, ALL THE FUEL EXPELLED OUT OF THE TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LEE HYUNDAI (1960 SKIBO RD, FAYETTEVILLE, NC 28314), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
ENGINE STALL , SEVERELY WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. ALSO I HAD TO PAY MIDAS $600 FOR BRAKE ROTOR JOB FRONT AND BACK
ENGINE STALLS AIR CONDITIONER BELT SQUEETS
AT 65 MPH, ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE STALLED, ALL LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CAME ON AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A NEARBY OFF RAMP. FIVE WEEKS LATER, THE ENGINE WILL START, AND THE ONL YLIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL IS THE AIR BAG LIGHT WHICH HAS NEVER GONE OFF SINCE THE STALLING EPISODE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON FOR A YEAR, WITH THE SAME MULTIPLE MISFIRE READINGS (300 AND 301). I HAVE HAD MECHANICS MAKE ALMOST EVERY POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS. ASPARK PLUGS AND WIRES WERE REPLACED TWICE IN A FOUR MONTH PERIOD WITH AN UNKNOWN FACTOR BURNING THEM OUT. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS OF BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS REPORTED ON RELIABLE INTERNET SITES, ESPECIALLY THE ENGINE STALLING WHICH IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS. THIS VEHICLE IS REPORTED TO HAVE HAD BOTH RECALL REPAIRS COMPLETED IN 2005. WITH THOUSANDS OF NEWER ELANTRA MODELS REPORTING THE INTERMITTENT ENGINE STALLING, HYUNDAI SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATE AND ISSUE A RECALL. NOTE: I AM UNABLE TO CHECK THE FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM IN THE LIST ABOVE. PERHAPS ONLY THREE ITEMS CAN BE CHECKED, I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM WITH ELANTRAS IS ALSO TIED TO THIS SYSTEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE EVAC VALVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WINDOWS COULD NOT BE OPENED OR CLOSED AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WOULD NOT UNLOCK FROM OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,750.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC BUT NO CAUSE FOR FAILURE WAS FOUND. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT THE CONTACT WAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,000.
DURING THE REPLACEMENT OF BOTH AXLES, CORROSION PERFORATION WAS DISCOVERED IN BOTH OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS NEAR THE BALL JOINTS. MORE DISTURBING IS THE FIST SIZED HOLE, RUSTED THRU THE MAIN SUSPENSION CROSS MEMBER THAT THE CONTROL ARMS ARE CONNECTED TO (DRIVERS SIDE). THE ENTIRE MAIN CROSSMEMBER WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. *TR
THREE WINDOW REGULATORS ON MY 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ARE NOT WORKING AND I AM UNABLE TO ROLL THEM UP AND DOWN. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW SLIDES DOWN WHEN I AM DRIVING. APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AGO. I HAD THE DRIVERS SIDE REGULATOR REPLACED AND IT'S BROKE AGAIN. THEY DON'T SEEM TO LAST. IN ORDER FOR ME TO PUT THE WINDOWS UP I HAVE TO HOLD THE SWITCH AND THE WINDOW. I HAVE HURT MY HANDS COUNTLESS TIMES ALREADY..IT HURTS ALOT!! PLEASE HELP ME CONCERNING THE WINDOW REGULATORS ON THESE CARS. EACH WINDOW COST ALOT TO FIX AND I HAVE 3 BROKEN NOW. ON 1 JULY 2010 HAD DAUGHTER'S 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTA AT MECHANIC'S FOR YAERLY PA STATE -MANDATED SAFETY INSPECTION. CAR FAILED OWING TO EXTENSIVE RUST ON REAR (NOT FRONT) SUBFRAME (NOT NOTED IN PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS) COMPROMISING STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF REAR SUSPENSION AND PUTTING DRIVER, OCCUPANTS, AND OTHERS AT RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH IN THE EVENT OF A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF PART. *TR
I TOOK MY 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GLS IN FOR AN ALIGNMENT. THE ALIGNMENT COULD NOT BE PERFORMED I WAS TOLD AND SHOWN BECAUSE THE VEHICLES REAR SUB FRAME HAS MULTIPLE HOLES, IS WEAK AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND WILL NOT PASS THE NEXT MAINE INSPECTION. I WAS TOLD THAT FOR THE WORK TO BE DONE IT WOULD COST OVER $2,000 DOLLARS. THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR SUB FRAME HAS A VERY LARGE HOLE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD INTERMITTENTLY STALL WITHOUT WARNING SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 00V259001 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING). THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE FAILURE NOR WAS THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 113,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, THE FRONT DRIVERS DOOR WOULD STICK AND HAD TO BE LEANED ON HARD IN ORDER TO GET IT OPEN. NOW, THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN WIDE ENOUGH FOR A CHILD TO GET IN OR OUT. IN ORDER FOR ME TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL, I HAVE TO ENTER THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE AND CLIMB OVER THE CENTER CONSOLE. THE DOOR LOOKS AS IF IT IS DETACHING ITSELF FROM THE VEHICLE. ALSO, THE ROOF APPEARS TO BE SINKING. THESE PROBLEMS DID NOT EXIST WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. *TR
2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA HAS A PROBLEM WERE YOU CAN NOT PUMP GAS WITHOUT GAS PUMP STOPPING LIKE IT WAS FILLED ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE ONLY PUMP LESS THAN A GALLON. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT OWN HYUNDAI'S WITH THIS PROBLEM, JUST GOOGLE HYUNDAI PUMPING GAS PROBLEMS. SOMETIMES GAS SPILLS FROM TANK WITHOUT THE TANK BEING FULLY FILLED BECAUSE THE GAS RISES, THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND HYUNDAI MUST CORRECT THIS. IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 15 TO 20 MINUTES TO FILL YOUR TANK. I THINK THIS IS A CONCERN FOR A RECALL. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS THAT YOU TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SPEND A GOOD AMOUNT OF MONEY AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED. MY RIGHT FRONT STUDDED SNOW TIRE ( PURCHASED OCT OF 2008) SUDDENLY LOST AIR ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. I PULLED OVER AND THE TIRE WAS HALF DOWN. I WENT BACK TO THE SELLER TODAY AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW TIRE $97 AND THEY HAVE VALVE STEMS THAT GO BAD ALL THE TIME. *TR

I THOUGHT MY MUFFLER HAD A HOLE IN IT SO I TOOK TO A SHOP AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY MUFFLER. TO ANOTHER SHOP AND TOLD I HAVE A CRACKED MANIFOLD. I THINK IT'S ABSURD THAT A 2000 MODEL CAR COULD GO THROUGH 2 MANILFOLDS IN 7 1/2 YEARS. WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP ON 10/09/03 REPORTING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS NOISY. WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT MUFFLER BUT WAS A CRACKED MANIFOLD. LUCKILY IT WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THAT WAS LESS THAN 5 YEARS AGO. SOUNDS LIKE A BIG PROBLEM TO ME. WE CONTACT HYUNDAI DIRECTLY. THE INSTRUCTED US TO BRING THE CAR TO A DEALER TO VERIFY THE DAMAGE. AFTER PAYING $74. OR THE DIAGNOSIS, THE DEALER CONTACTED THE REGISTRY WHO REMOVED OUR CAR INSPECTION STICKER. HYUNDAI THEN DECLINED TO COVER OR SHARE ANY COST OF THE REPAIR BECAUSE IT IS BEYOND THE 100,000 MILES OF THE WARRANTY. THE CAR HAS 129,000 MILES. *TR

I HAVE ONLY PUT 25,000 MILES ON THIS CAR IN 7 YEARS AND THE ONLY TIME I HAVE OPENED THE REAR WINDOWS WAS WHEN I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON BY MISTAKE. WELL RECENTLY MY SON DROVE THE CAR AND OPENED THE REAR WINDOWS - BOTH OF THEM FAILED IN ONE WEEK. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY WANTED TO CHARGE $69 PER WINDOW JUST TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 30 MPH THE HOOD LATCH FAILED AND THE HOOD BLEW OFF (SHEARING THE HINGES) INTO THE WINDSHIELD AND SIDE VIEW MIRROR. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC HOOD, HINGES, LATCH, WINDSHIELD AND SIDE MIRROR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *JB
DURING THE PAST 18 MONTHS, ALL FOUR WINDOWS IN MY 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA HAS HAD THE WINDOW REGULATOR GO BAD AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THESE WINDOWS WERE ENGINEERED TO FAIL. THE TOTAL COST TO REPLACE THEM WAS NEAR $1500. BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE, THE REAR WINDOW ROLLED DOWN DURING A RAINSTORM HERE IN FLORIDA. MY REACTION NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. *JB
THE REGULATOR DEVICE BROKE IN THREE OF MY AUTOMATIC WINDOWS SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR. DURING THE TIME THE WINDOWS WERE BROKEN THE GLASS WAS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION, PROVIDING A RED FLAG FOR ANYONE WISHING TO STEAL MY CAR OR ITS CONTENTS. I OWN 2 MANUAL-TRANSMISSION HYUNDAI ELANTRAS, 2000 AND 2001. BOTH CARS HAVE APPROXIMATELY 35,000 MILES. BOTH CARS HAVE HAD THEIR CLUTCHES GO BAD IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS (MASTER CYLINDER ON THE 2001, SLAVE CYLINDER ON THE 2000). *NM
THE AIR BAGS IN THE CAR DID NOT DEPLOY. IT WAS A FRONT END COLLISION. THE CAR STRUCTURALLY HELD UP VERY WELL BUT WE ARE NOT QUITE SURE WHY THE AIR BAGS DID NOT WORK? *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE ENGINE HESITATED, THEN STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR WHICH WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. HOWEVER, THE REPLACEMENT PARTS NEEDED TO BE ORDERED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO DETERMINED THERE WAS A RECALL # 00V259001 REGARDING ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH IN A PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THE IGNITION WIRE WAS ARCHING, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO MISFIRE AND STALL. THE IGNITION WIRE WAS REPLACED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RESTRAIN A CHILD IN A SAFETY SEAT WITH THE LEFT REAR SEAT BELT, THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY FRACTURED WITHOUT WARNING. ADDITIONALLY, THE FRONT SEAT BELT WEBBING STRAP TIGHTENED WHEN ENGAGED DURING NORMAL USE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF BUCKLE ASSEMBLY FRACTURE, BUT DETERMINED THE FRONT SEAT BELT WAS DESIGNED THAT WAY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. TWO POWER WINDOWS HAVE FAILED. THE FIRST TIME, THE DRIVER'S WINDOW FELL WHILE DRIVING, STARTLING THE DRIVER, ALMOST CAUSING A REAR-END COLLISION. THE SECOND TIME, THE REAR WINDOW HAD FALLEN WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNOCCUPIED, WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED THE THEFT OF THE VEHICLE AND/OR ITS COMPONENTS. BOTH PARTS WERE FIXED AT OWNER'S COST OF $140 EACH, PLUS LABOR. **NM

WINDOWS REGULATORS FAILING - SO FAR THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES ON THIS CAR, TWICE ON THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE - ONCE UNDER WARRANTY AND ONCE AT MY EXPENSE. THE REAR WINDOW COMES DOWN AT WILL AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GLUE IT UP. *JB

THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO BE MORE NOTICEABLE WHEN THE FUEL TANK WAS CLOSE TO EMPTY, BUT THERE WERE NO OTHER WARNING INDICATORS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THERE IS A RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN 00V259001, CONCERNING THE WIRING HARNESS, HOWEVER THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED.
TWO BACK WINDOWS AND ONE FRONT WINDOW FAILED TO OPERATE OVER A SIX MONTH PERIOD (ELECTRIC WINDOWS). THE WINDOWS WOULD FALL DOWN AND WOULD NOT STAY UP. THE MOTOR AND REGULATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED IN THE BACK WINDOWS AND THE REGULATOR IN THE FRONT WINDOW AT A COST OVER $1100.00. THE CAR IS ONLY SIX YEARS OLD. *NM
THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AS A USED VEHICLE IN APRIL 2004. IT ONLY HAD 38,000 MILES ON IT. I REPLACED ALL THE BELTS, TIRES AND FLUIDS IN THE VEHICLE. IN AUGUST 2004, THE CAR OVERHEATED. I CALLED ATLANTIC HYUNDAI IN EAST ISLIP AND THEY TOLD ME TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED THERE. THREE DAYS LATER THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE HAD ACTUALLY MELTED THE RADIATOR. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT HAD BLOWN A HEAD GASKET. THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO HONOR THE WARRANTY. AFTER MUCH ARGUING WITH THEM AND THE WARRANTY DEPT., THEY FINALLY AGREED TO DO THE REPAIRS. MUCH TO MY DISAPPOINTMENT, THE PROBLEM WAS NOT FIXED. THE CAR CONTINUALLY OVERHEATED. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC WHO SAID THE THERMOSTAT HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED AND IT LOOKS LIKE THEY NEVER REPLACED THE HEAD GASKET. I THEN PAID TO REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT. THE CAR CONTINUES TO OVERHEAT IF DRIVEN AT SPEEDS OVER 30 MPH. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOWED 4 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR DUE TO OVERHEATING. THE CAR CANNOT BE DRIVEN MORE THAN 30 MILES BECAUSE IT WILL OVERHEAT. THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED 7 TIMES FOR OVERHEATING ISSUES. THE LATEST ISSUE IS THAT THE ENGINE COOLANT DOES NOT CIRCULATE AND CAUSES THE CAR TO OVERHEAT. MY 19 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, FOR WHOM THE CAR WAS PURCHASED, WAS RECENTLY TRAVELING ON THE SUNRISE HIGHWAY, LESS THAN 4 MILES DRIVEN, WHEN THE CAR OVERHEATED AGAIN. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 46,000 MILES. *JB
I HAVE HAD AN INTERMITTENT LOW-SPEED STALLING PROBLEM WITH MY 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRA FOR A LONG TIME. FINALLY I RECENTLY HAD A TECHNICIAN DRIVE THE CAR FOR A WEEK, AND HE WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE CONDITION AND THE DEALER SUGGESTED REPLACING THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND THEN AFTER GIVING THEM THE OK ON DOING IT, THEY INSTALLED THE PART, ONLY TO TELL ME LATER TO DO A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR (OVER 1,700 DOLLARS FOR REPLACING THE WIRING HARNESS). HAVING PAID FOR THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, I BEGAN DRIVING THE CAR AGAIN. I NOT ONLY NOTICED NO IMPROVEMENT AT ALL IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CAR, THE PERFORMANCE WAS ACTUALLY WORSE. I TRIED TO GET THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO STAND BY THEIR REPAIR, BUT THEY WOULDN'T. IN "RECALLS" ON MY COMPUTER I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A STALLING PROBLEM FOR ALL MODELS OF 2000 HYUNDAI ELANTRAS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE I HAVE BEEN HAVING THAT CREATED THE RISK OF A CRASH, HOWEVER MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE RECALL INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET STATES WITH REGARD TO THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM: "...STALLING COULD OCCUR IF THE MAF (MASS AIR FLOW) SENSOR ELECTRICAL SIGNAL IS INTERRUPTED AS A RESULT OF ENGINE VIBRATION TRANSMITTED TO THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS." I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IN SUCH CASES WHERE THE SAME PROBLEM IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND SOME VIN NUMBERS WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, THAT THEY ARE OFTEN THEN ADDED TO THE VIN NUMBERS IN THE RECALL. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR CONSIDERATION OF INCLUDING MY VIN IN THIS RECALL BASED ON THE FOREGOING. AFTER ENTERING THE HIGHWAY AT SPEED OF 65-70 MPH THE HOOD CAME FLYING OPEN. THERE WAS NO LIGHT IN THE CAR SHOWING THE HOOD WAS OPEN PRIOR TO THIS. THE CAR WHEN OUT OF CONTROL AND CROSSED OVER FOUR LANES OF TRAFFIC. THE HOOD WAS NEARLY BENT IN HALF OVER THE ROOF OF THE CAR. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE SAFETY SWITCH HOLDING THE HOOD SHUT IS BROKEN. THE HOOD APPEARS TO REMAIN SHUT. *NM
