I have a 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring with 2 recalls. I first noticed a problem on 7/25/21 when my Power Steering stopped working all of a sudden. So I Googled the info & discovered that it was a recall: #127 - EPS And, then discovered the other recall: #188 - ABS I contacted Hyundai on Mon 7/26/21 & spoke w/ Tiffany & she started a claim: #18490296. I was told my car would be picked up within 2-3 days & taken to the Hyundai Dealership & all repairs would be done FREE OF CHARGE. As of 8/11/21 it has been a total of 16 days since starting the claim & I have made phone calls every day & documented who I have spoken to. I am getting the runaround & no one can tell me when my car will be picked up & taken to be fixed. (Cust Svc Reps agreed that it shouldn't be taking this long!) I am fed up, frustrated & I don't know what to do from here. I have read that with the recalls, it isn't safe to drive my car & because of these issues. It is costing me time & money being out of work! This is so un-acceptable & I need answers as to what to do & how I'm ever going to get my car repaired?! I'm glad I found your website & I just hope someone can give me some feedback & help in getting this problem resolved! I desperate! So whomever reads this message, I'm begging you Please help me?! The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer to have her A/C unit serviced; but upon return of the vehicle, the contact stated that her EPS(Electronic Power Steering) warning light had illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that her steering wheel would jerk upon turning the steering wheel in either direction. The dealer was notified of the matter and informed her that the warning light was illuminated prior to service. The contact contested that claim and stated that she would have brought the warning light to their attention if the light had illuminated prior to service. The manufacturer was notified of the matter and gave the contact a case number. The contact was also notified that her vehicle was placed under NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V100000(Steering) back in 2015; however, the recall was serviced that same year. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000.
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring. The contact stated while parking the vehicle, the rear frame had disconnected from the body and landed on the ground. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact’s residence. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and the contact was awaiting a response. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
THE ABS MODULE JUST STARTED SMOKING TODAY. SMELL OF BURNING BREAKS. WE WAS DRIVING IN THE CITY AND STOPPED AT A MALL AND NOTICED THE SMOKE COMING FROM BEHIND THE DRIVER SIDE WHEEL.
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost power steering assist and it became difficult to steer the vehicle. The contact stated that the EPS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed with the power steering needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and declined to offer any additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 34,900.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA TOURING. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN, AN EPS MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO MAKE THE TURN. THE CONTACT STOPPED AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND DROVE BACK TO THE RESIDENCE HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER SOUTH POINT HYUNDAI (4610 S IH 35 FRONTAGE RD, AUSTIN, TX 78745) AND THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A MDTS COMPUTER ERROR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
EPS BULB TEST REMAINS ON AFTER IGNITION AND ENGINE RUNNING. NO POWER STEERING PRESENT. RECALL # 127 PERFORMED IN 2016, HOWEVER PROBLEM HAS RETURNED. VEHICLE HAS 51500 MILES, 2009 HYUNDAI TOURING. HYUNDAI USA DID NOT AUTHORIZE DEALER TO REPAIR THIS RECALL AS A CAMPAIGN CODE 02/11/2021. DESPITE ISSUANCE OF HYUNDAI CASE # 17688862 THE CASE MANAGER HAS NOT RESOLVED THIS ISSUE FOR ME TO HAVE VEHICLE REPAIRED. I AM INFORMING THE NATIONAL HWY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMIN., HEREIN ON THIS DAY 02/12/2021 AS CURRENTLY THE VEHICLE IS IN DANGER OF CAUSING A MAJOR ACCIDENT.
THE SENSITIVITY ON THE ALARM SYSTEM IS WAY OFF. I CAN'T EVEN SET THE ALARM BECAUSE IF A SEMI DRIVES PASSED IT, THE ALARM GOES OFF. IF A CAT JUMPS ON IT, THE ALARM GOES OFF. IF A STRONG BREEZE GOES BY AND A TWIG DROPS, IT GOES OFF. EVEN THOUGH THE LOCAL HYUNDAI REPAIR PEOPLE KNOW WHAT IS WRONG, THEY STILL WANT TO CHARGE AN ARM AND A LEG. FOR SOMETHING THAT ISN'T MY FAULT. JUST RECALIBRATE YOUR EQUIPMENT. YOU HAVE THE COMPUTERS TO DO SO BECAUSE YOUR EQUIPMENT HAS DONE IT BEFORE. MAYBE FIX IT?
WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD, COMPLETELY LOST POWER STEERING. TRIED TO TURN DOWN THE STREET WHERE I LIVE AND ALMOST DIDN'T MAKE THE TURN. THE EPS LIGHT IS ON AND WILL NOT GO OFF, THERE IS NO POWER STEERING. I LET THE CAR SIT IN THE DRIVEWAY OVER THE WEEKEND, STARTED IT UP AND THERE IS STILL NO POWER STEERING.
POWER STEERING KEEPS TURNING OFF EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING IN PARK. HAVE TO KEEP PULLING OVER TO TURN CAR OFF TO RESET IT. I TRAVEL MAJOR HIGHWAY ON A DAILY BASIS AND FEAR I WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT DUE TO STEERING LOCKING UP.
MY PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON
WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY TURNS AND STAYS OFF UNTIL THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND IS ALLOWED TO SIT FOR A WHILE (HOUR OR MORE). THIS MAY PUT ME IN DANGER. IT HAS HAPPENED A NUMBER OF TIMES. IF I AM TURNING OR DRIVING ON A CURVE (HIGHWAY OF CITY STREET) THE STEERING WHEEL WILL SUDDENLY WANT TO GO STRAIGHT. IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR BUILT INTO THE EPS COLUMN ASSEMBLY IS AT FAULT AND TO FIX IT THE WHOLE COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON. WHEN I TURNED THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF, THE CAR WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. IN FACT, THE CAR INCREASED IN SPEED EVEN WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL COMPLETELY OFF. I STEPPED ON THE BREAKS AND IT SLOWED DOWN A BIT, BUT AS SOON AS I STEPPED OFF THE BREAK THE CAR WOULD START TO ACCELERATE. I MADE MY WAY OFF THE EXIT AND PRESSED THE BREAK HARD AND WITH THE HELP WITH EMERGENCY BREAK, I WAS ABLE TO STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF THE CAR. AS SOON AS I STARTED UP THE CAR AGAIN, THE ENGINE REVVED REAL HIGH. I OPENED THE HOOD OF THE CAR AND SAW THAT PLASTIC ENGINE COVER HAD SPLIT AND THE BROKEN PIECE WAS JAMMING THE THROTTLE CABLE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS ISSUE. I'VE INCLUDED PICTURES OF THE BROKEN PART AND WHERE THE BROKEN PART WAS TOUCHING THE THROTTLE.
STEERING WHEEL IS CLUNKING AND THE EPS LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON. IT INITIALLY BLINKS WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED ON AND THEN STAYS ON SHORTLY AFTER. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER RECALLS REGARDING STEERING WHEEL EPS RELATED FAULTS AND THE STEERING SUDDENLY STIFFENING UP, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL ON THE VEHICLE EITHER ON LOCAL ROADWAYS OR EVEN ON THE HIGHWAYS (NOT ONLY ON THE ELANTRA, BUT ALSO ON SONATA MODELS FROM THIS MANUFACTURER.)
I WAS NOTIFIED OF A RECALL FOR THE ABS BREAKS STATING THAT THERE COULD BE A SHORT CIRCUIT ISSUE AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I CALLED HYUNDAI IN LATE JULY 2020, SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR A BROKEN WINDOW AND RECALL. UPON LEAVING THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL PART IS NOT AVAILABLE AND NEEDED TO BE ORDERED. IT IS NOW OCTOBER 15, 2020 AND THE PART HAS STILL NOT ARRIVED. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE STATED THAT THEY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 20 PEOPLE WAITING FOR THIS PART AND THEY HAVE ONLY RECEIVED 5 PARTS. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 3 MONTHS. I BELIEVE THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAS DONE EVERYTHING THAT THEY CAN BUT HYUNDAI IS LAGGING. I REALLY HOPE THAT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF MY CAR DOESN'T CATCH FIRE.
I WAS DRIVING FROM WORK AND MY AIRBAG LIGHT COME ON SO I GOT IT TESTED AND THEY SAID IT WAS MY PASSENGER SEAT IS IT SAFE TO DRIVE MY CAR
09' ELANTRA GLS APPROX. 66K MILES 6/18/2020. I LOST POWER STEERING AND THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON WHILE ACCELERATING THROUGH A LIGHT THAT HAD JUST TURNED GREEN. EVER SINCE THEN I RANDOMLY LOOSE POWER STEERING AND THE EPS LIGHT COMES ON. I'VE LOST POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING, RIGHT AFTER SHIFTING INTO GEAR (REVERSE AND DRIVE), AND AFTER I START TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A PATTERN. THE WEATHER HAS BEEN IN THE 70S/80S. VEHICLE IS ALL STOCK, FAIRLY LOW MILEAGE AND HAS UNDERGONE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER REPORTED THIS SAME ISSUE AT 35K MILES WHICH HYUNDAI FIXED BY ADJUSTING THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR. THAT WASN'T A PERMANENT FIX, AS IM LEARNING THE BEST PERMANENT FIX IS TO REPLACE THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN. *TR
MY ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING WENT OUT, THANKFULLY AS I WAS BACKING OUT MY GARAGE. THE HYUNDAI DEALER SAID THE MOTOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT THE MOTOR IS INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN, SO I NEED A WHOLE NEW COLUMN. THIS RUNS AROUND $1,600 INCLUDING LABOR. AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THE ELANTRA. EVEN SOMEONE AT THE DEALER SAID THEY DON'T KNOW WHY THERE ISN'T A RECALL. I FEEL LIKE ONE SHOULD BE ISSUED ALTHOUGH IT WOULD BE TOO LATE TO SAVE ME FROM PAYING $1,600. *TR

IT WAS UNKNOWN IF A DEALER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO EBERSOLE HYUNDAI (2101 CUMBERLAND ST, LEBANON, PA 17042) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE GEAR COUPLING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
THE CAR'S KEY PULLS OUT OF THE IGNITION WHEN THE GEAR IS STILL IN DRIVE POSITION, WHILE THE ENGINE IS ON OR OFF MODE. THIS CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE, IF UNINTENTIONALLY THE DRIVER TURNS OFF THE ENGINE AND PULLS OUT THE KEY OFF THE IGNITION, WHILE THE GEAR IS STILL ON DRIVE POSITION. THIS CAN MAKE THE CAR MOVES WHILE UNATTENDED. ALSO, I HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE THE KEY FELL OFF THE IGNITION WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE IS HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2009 WITH 78,051 MILES. *TR

ACCELERATION FAULTY CRUSE CONTROL
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL CEASED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MANAGED TO VEER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON AS THE EPS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO (MYRTLE BEACH HYUNDAI 1887 US-501, MYRTLE BEACH, SC 29577 (843) 626-3657) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND DETERMINED THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER RECALIBRATED POWER STEERING MODULE HOWEVER THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 77,300.
UNKNOWN; My car moved from pavement to dirt rode. I pressed the break and attempted to turn left. The car did not slow down or turn. I went straight off the curve and hit a tree. Upon impact broke 4 bones(hip, ribs, arm, shoulder shoved into my chest) , lacerated 2 organs, and major concussion. I go for a secondary hip surgery to correct the failed device inside my body now.

A FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOW LOT AND DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED RECENTLY RECEIVED EMAIL NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V061000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
IT HAPPENED TWICE : AROUND JUNE 2018, AND TODAY 12/20/2019. TODAY, WHILE DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEED AT 40 MILES/HR IN A CITY ROAD , SUDDENLY THE EPS WARNING LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED, THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED UP. I ALMOST GOT HIT BY OTHER CARS. LUCKILY I MANAGED TO GO TO THE SIDE ROAD, TURNED OFF THE CAR AND TURNED ON AGAIN , THEN THE THE CAR WAS WORKING NORMALLY. BACK IN 2018, THIS EPS WARNING LIGHT HAPPENED, SAME THING. STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED , RESTARTED THEN THE CAR WORKING FINE , I THOUGHT IT WAS A BATTERY THEN I CHANGED IT AND I THOUGHT MAY BE THE BATTERY CAUSED IT.
I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR A FEW DAYS AGO, THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS ON ALL THE TIME EVEN BEFORE I PURCHASED, THE EX-OWNER GOT THE CAR FROM HIS GRAND-MA AS A GIFT AND HE SAID IT HAD BEEN LIKE THAT SINCE HE STARTED TO DRIVE, I SEARCHED ONLINE TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE PROBLEM, NOTICED THAT IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM FACED BY MANY HYUDAI ELANTRA OWNERS.
LOST POWER STEERING. FIRST TIME IT WAS RESET. THIS TIME I AM INFORMED IT NEEDS STEERING COLUMN. COST OF $2700 CAR WAS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY.
I PURCHASED A CAR FROM AL AT ISLAND AUTO SALES, (631) 569-5050, 330 EAST MAIN STREET, SUITE B, PATCHOGUE, NY 11772. 1-AIR BAG LIGHT WAS/IS ON AT ALL THE TIME. 2-CAR WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT/WORN INSIDE TIRES ALL TIMES. 3-CAR TRANSMISSION ALL OF THE SUDDEN SLOWS AND THEN JUMPS, VERY FREQUENTLY, WHILE DRIVING AL SAID HE WILL FIX THE ISSUES. HE ALIGNED THE CAR, BUT IS STILL PULLING TO THE SIDE. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC SHOP AND HE SAID: "TIRES ARE WORN OUT FROM INSIDE AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE. AIRBAG SPEED DETECTION SENSOR IS MISSING ALL TOGETHER AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE CONTACTED AL, VIA PHONE, EMAIL AND FAX, AND ASKED HIM TO CORRECT THE TWO ISSUES. HE IS NOT RESPONDING. THAT IS WHY I AM CONTACTING YOU FOR HELP. I HAVE A RECORD OF MY COMMUNICATIONS WITH ISLAND AUTO SALES.

SRS WARNING LIGHT ON DASH CAME ON 6 MONTHS AGO. I GOT PRICES OF $400-2000 TO REPAIR. DEALER WAS $120 JUST TO DO DIAGNOSTIC. I'VE GOOGLED PROBLEM AND THIS IS COMMON FOR ELANTRA. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. WHY IS THERE A RECALL? *TR
STEERING COLUMN PROBLEM STARTED 2 WEEKS AGO. EVERY TIME THAT YOU STEER OR MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL A KNOCKING SOUND RESONATES FROM THE POWER STEERING COLUMN. I HAVE CHECKED IF I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE TIE ROD ENDS BUT BOTH ARE FINE. I TRACE BACK THE PROBLEM GOING FROM THE FIREWALL HEADING TOWARDS UP AND I HAVE ISOLATED THE SOUND COMING FORM THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING (EPS) MOTOR JUST RIGHT ABOVE THE UNIVERSAL JOINT. THE STEERING ONCE SEIZE TO OPERATE WHEN PARK BUT I HAVE NOT DUPLICATED IT YET SINCE THAT INCIDENCE. NO CODES HAVE REFLECTED ON THE DASHBOARD. THIS IS A VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN BY A SENIOR ADULT WOMAN.
SRS AIR BAG LIGHT ON. GURNEE HYUNDAI AND HYUNDAI USA 1(800)633-5151 SAID THIS DOES NOT FALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID : 11V143000 BECAUSE MY CAR IS A GLS NOT AN SE. SRS IS ALWAYS ON AND DEALER SAID SENSOR WAS CONTAMINATED JUST LIKE THE CAMPAIGN STATED COULD HAPPEN ON 2009 ELANTRAS. HYUNDAI WANTS OVER $2000 TO REPLACE THIS SENSOR.
WE HAVE HAD THE RECALL FOR THE EPS REPAIRED A FEW YEARS AGO. A FEW YEARS LATER THE EPS CAME ON AGAIN AND ALMOST CRASHED THE CAR/NO POWER STEERING. WE AGAIN TOOK IT TO A DEALER IN LAUREL, MD AND THEY SAID WE HAD ANOTHER RECALL AND THEY DOWNLOADED THE FIX/NO CHARGE. WELL ABOUT 2 YEARS LATER/TODAY THE EPS CAME ON AND AGAIN ALMOST CRASHED THE CAR. IT IS INTERMITTENT, I WAS ABLE TO GET IT HOME NO PROBLEM. WE MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO A BOWIE, MD DEALER WHO CAN'T GET TO IT FOR 10 DAYS! WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE EPS LIGHT TURNED ON AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE MECHANIC I TOOK IT TO SAID THE POWER STEERING MOTOR FAILED AND THAT THE ENTIRE UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE SAFELY. TAYLOR HYUNDAI (LOCATED AT 3233 WASHINGTON RD, AUGUSTA, GA 30907, (706) 868-1200) WAS CONTACTED BY PHONE AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SUBJECTED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V100000 (STEERING). ADDITIONALLY, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL REPAIR PERFORMED, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. AFTER THE FAILURE RECURRED, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL ELECTRICAL ISSUES PERTAINING TO THE INTERIOR LIGHTING BEING ACTIVATED WHEN THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WAS TURNED TO THE ON POSITION. ADDITIONALLY, THE BATTERY WOULD DRAIN OVERNIGHT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 15936968. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 149,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, I TRIED TO STEER OFF TO THE LEFT TO AVOID A CAR FROM HITTING ME FROM THE RIGHT. THIS LED TO THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKING AND THE CAR SPINNING OUT. I TRIED TO GET CONTROL OF THE WHEEL BUT COULD NOT. THE CAR CONTINUED TO SPIN UNTIL IT CRASHED INTO THE GUARD RAILING, SMASHING THE RIGHT SIDE AND RIGHT FRONT. THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WAS DENTED INTO THE CAR MAKING IT UNDRIVEABLE.

A NEIGHBOR ALERTED THE CONTACT, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES AND PROVIDED AN INSPECTION REPORT. A DEALER HAD NOT DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE YET TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS NOTIFIED AND WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE SO THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN IF THE VEHICLE MAY BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL PARKED AT THE OWNERS RESIDENCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED TO DETERMINE IF THEY MAY INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000.
MY EPS WARNING LIGHT CAME ON ONE DAY AND IT HASN'T TURNED OFF EVER SINCE. SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING HAS TURNED OFF AND I'VE HAD TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR TO FIX IT. THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO MAKES A CLUNKING SOUND WHEN I TURN IT LEFT AND RIGHT.

THE EPS LIGHT WENT ON AND I LOST POWER STEERING. LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY OR I COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERE. HYUNDAI DID A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE BACK IN 2015 BUT IT WAS JUST A SYSTEM UPDATE FOR THE STEERING MODULE BUT IT SEEMS LIKE A SHORT TERM SOLUTION. I HAVE FOUND OVER A HUNDRED COMPLAINTS WHERE OTHER CUSTOMERS ARE HAVING TH SAME SAFETY ISSUE AND I REALLY THINK HYUNDAI NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THE STEERING IN THE '09 ELANTRAS ARE UNSAFE AND WILL EVENTUALLY POSSIBLY KILL SOMEONE.

SO WE DROVE 27 MILES ONE WAY TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT . 1 HOUR LATER WAS TOLD IT WAS FIXED . GOT IN VEHICLE TO LEAVE AND NOTICED LIGHT WAS STILL ON AND WENT BACK IN TO TELL THEM . WAS TOLD TO BRING BACK NEXT DAY 3-16-19 SAT AT 8 AM . WAS THERE WHEN OPENED UP AND AFTER APPROX.1 HR. WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $120.00 PER HR. TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT , SO WE AGREED TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AND WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST $ 2390.00 FOR REPLACEMENT OF PART THAT IS OR SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER RECALL .TECH SAID HE WOULD SEE IF HYUNDAI WOULD COVER COST AND WOULD LET US KNOW THE FOLLOWING MON. THE LIGHT OF THE AIRBAG USED TO TURN ON AND OFF CONSTANTLY I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE MECHANIC AND FINDS NO PROBLEM. NOW THE CAR HAS A WEEK WITH THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY COLITIONS
WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE EPS LIGHT WOULD ARBITRARILY TURN ON AND GO AWAY WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS CYCLED OFF AND BACK ON. WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON, IT IMMEDIATELY BECOMES DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE CAR REVERTS TO MANUAL STEERING MODE AND REQUIRES SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF EFFORT TO CONTROL. WE HAVE HAD THE EPS LIGHT TURN ON MULTIPLE TIMES WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AND PUTTING US IN DANGEROUS, UNSAFE CONDITIONS ON THE ROAD. RECENTLY, THE EPS LIGHT IS STAYING ON AND NOT GOING AWAY. WE VISITED THE LOCAL DEALER TO REPORT THIS ISSUE AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS RESULTED IN ERROR CODES RELATED TO THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR-ELECTRICAL, TORQUE SENSOR MAIN SIGNAL FAULT, ECU (BRAKE SYSTEM) HARDWARE ERROR, CAN TIME-OUT EMS, AND MOTOR. WHEN ASKED, THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO PERFORM AN EVALUATION AS PER THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. THEY RECALIBRATED THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR AND STATED THAT IF THE PROBLEM REOCCURS, WE WOULD NEED TO RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN (PART NUMBER 56310-2H250 AS1) AND PAY FULL COST OF REPAIR (PART AND LABOR). THIS PART NUMBER IS LISTED AS A REPLACEABLE ITEM PER THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED AN EPS S/W CHK/ECU UPGRADE IN 2015 WHEN NO ISSUES WERE PRESENT AND REFUSE TO FURTHER ASSIST WHEN THE ISSUE IS PRESENT WHEN THE RECALL CAMPAIGN INFORMATION LETTER IN MARCH 2015 CLEARLY STATES THAT THE FINAL REMEDY HAS NOT BEEN DEVELOPED AT THIS TIME. THE DIAGNOSIS SHOWS THAT A FAULTY PART WAS INSTALLED BY THE CAR MANUFACTURER, AS STATED IN THE RECALL, AND THE DEALERSHIP IS REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL ISSUE. INSTEAD OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM, THEY INSIST THAT WE DRIVE THIS POTENTIALLY UNSAFE VEHICLE UNTIL THE ISSUE REOCCURS. THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED CONCERN AS THERE IS NO WARNING TO WHEN THIS ISSUE WILL OCCUR. THEIR RECALL NOTICE STATES THAT THE EPS PROBLEMS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASED RISK OF A CRASH.
