I HAVE A BRAND NEW HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT WITH 17" WHEELS. IT HAS ABOUT 3200 MILES ON IT. I KNOW THAT I RECENTLY HIT A POTHOLE ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT NOTHING THAT I THOUGHT WAS VERY SERIOUS. I DISCOVERED A BUBBLE ON MY LEFT FRONT TIRE SHORTLY THEREAFTER AND ORDERED A BRAND NEW NEXEN 215/45R17, WHICH IS THE BRAND THE CAR CAME WITH. WHEN THE SHOP INSTALLED THE TIRE, THEY DISCOVERED THAT MY OTHER FRONT TIRE ALSO HAD A SMALLER BUBBLE ON IT. I AM NOW GETTING THAT REPLACED AS WELL. THERE ARE DISCUSSION FORUMS ONLINE DETAILING CASE AFTER CASE OF ELANTRAS WITH 17" WHEELS HAVING BUBBLES, BLOW-OUTS ON THE HIGHWAYS ETC. THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE GRINDING OF THE FRONT BRAKES ON MY 2013 ELANTRA COUPE FROM THE DAY I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT AND NOW IT IS 15 MONTHS LATER AND 12653 MILES LATER AND 5 TRIPS BACK TO THE DEALER TO GET IT FIXED, 1ST THEY SAID THEY TURNED THE ROTORS, 2ND THEY SAID THEY BALANCED THE WHEELS, 3RD THEY SAID THEY ALIGNED THE FRONT END, 4TH THEY SAID IT WAS A DUST PLATE, AND 5TH THEY SAID IT IS NORMAL. I WENT TO A DIFFERENT DEALER THEY SAID HYUNDAI HAD MADE NEW SOFTER PADS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I SENT AN E-MAIL TO HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CONNECT CENTER CONSUMER AFFAIRS, THEY SAID TO BRING IT BACK TO THE DEALER. ..UPDATED 04-16-14 *BF
EVERY FEW MONTHS ONE OF THE TIRES ON OUR 2013 ELANTRA LIMITED FAILS WHILE DRIVING. OUR CAR CURRENTLY HAS JUST 11,000 MILES AND IS LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD AND SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR WE HAVE HAD 2 TIRES BLOW HOLES IN THE SIDEWALL (MONTHS APART FROM EACH OTHER) AND A THIRD DEVELOPED A LARGE BLISTER. MY DEALER REFERRED ME TO HYUNDAI CUST SVC, HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD ME THAT THEY DO NOT COVER THE TIRES AT ALL AND IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. CONTINENTAL TIRE CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD ME THAT THEY MANUFACTURED THE TIRE SPECIFICALLY FOR HYUNDAI AND TO THEIR SPECIFICATIONS AND IF THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH DESIGN THEN I WOULD HAVE TO PURSUE IT THROUGH HYUNDAI BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WARRANT AGAINST "ROAD HAZARDS." I DO NOT FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFE VEHICLE FOR MY WIFE TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE UNLESS THIS SITUATION IS ADDRESSED. CURRENTLY WE HAVE HAD 2 TIRES BLOW OUT WHILE DRIVING LEAVING MY WIFE STRANDED AND WITHOUT A SPARE (VEHICLE DOES NOT COME WITH A SPARE!) THE CAR THEN NEEDS TO BE TOWED. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 68MPH ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A LARGE BOOM. PULLED OVER TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED AND NOTICE THAT MY MOONROOF/SUNROOF HAD SHATTERED INTO A MILLION PIECES. THE INTRIGUING PART WAS THAT I WAS ALONE WITH NO CARS AROUND WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. THE WEATHER WAS COLD, BUT NOT EXTREME THE TEMPERATURE WAS AROUND 24 DEGREES. *TR
HITTING A POTHOLE AT. LOW SPEED DESTROYED MY TIRE AND BENT THE RIM. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIRE LOST UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS. THE IMPACT SEEMS TO BE BORNE BY THE RIM WHICH THEN CRUSHES THE TIRE. THIS COMPLAINT ABOUT THE 2013 ELANTRA SHOWS UP IN NUMEROUS REPORTS ON THE CARS.COM WEBSITE. *TR
I HAVE REPLACED FOUR TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE DUE TO SIDEWALL-RELATED DAMAGE. IN THE FIRST INCIDENT (THE ONE DETAILED IN THE METADATA ABOVE), THE TIRE BLEW OUT COMPLETELY, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOSE CONTROL. IN THE OTHER THREE INCIDENTS, SIDEWALL BUBBLES DEVELOPED REQUIRING THE TIRE TO BE REPLACED. FORUMS ON THE INTERNET ARE LISTING OVER 100 CUSTOMERS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE; IT SEEMS TO BE AN ENGINEERING DEFECT RELATING TO THE SIZE OF THE TIRE (AND ITS LOW-PROFILE NATURE) AND THE STIFFNESS OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION. I DRIVE THE SAME ROADS IN TWO OTHER VEHICLES (SO HITTING THE SAME POTHOLES AND BUMPS), AND HAVE DRIVEN OVER 750,000 MILES WITHOUT A SINGLE BLOWOUT OR IMPACT-RELATED DAMAGE; ON THIS VEHICLE, I HAVE HAD FOUR DESTROYED TIRES IN SEVEN MONTHS AND 7,200 MILES OF VEHICLE OWNERSHIP. *JS
DURING MERGE ONTO A MAJOR DALLAS TOLLWAY, TRAFFIC BECAME STOPPED IN THE RIGHT LANE AND UPON APPLYING A HARD BRAKE OF MY CAR, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE, THE SEATBELT DID NOT LOCK, MY CAR FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS ACCELERATING EVEN THOUGH I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE PAD HARD. I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME ONCE AND THEN AGAIN BEFORE MY CAR STOPPED, STILL RUNNING. MY CAR SUSTAINED $8500 IN DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END, BUT THE AIR BAG DID NOT EVEN DEPLOY. I HAVE OWNED IT FOR 15 MONTHS AND HAVE NOT HAD AN ISSUE OF THIS NATURE IN THE PAST, HOWEVER I AM NOW CONCERNED OF THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR
GOT A HYUNDAI 2013 ELANTRA GT IN EARLY NOV. 2013 WITH THE STYLE & TECH PACKAGE WHICH HAS THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF. THE CAR IS BARELY 3 MONTHS OLD. DRIVING TO WORK ON 288 SOUTH FWAY WHEN I SUDDENLY HEARD A BOOM, AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS ANOTHER CAR THAT HAD BLOWN ITS TIRE BUT THEN I HEARD THE SUNROOF COVER ABOVE MY HEAD FLUTTERING. PULLED OVER JUST AS A F350 TRUCK PARKED IN FRONT OF ME, DRIVER COMES OUT AND TELLS ME I CRACKED HIS WINDSHIELD, I SEE THAT THE FRONT SECTION OF MY SUNROOF IS GONE. THE DRIVER SAYS HE WAS BEHIND ME AND SAW MY SUNROOF IMPLODE AND A HUGE PIECE OF THE GLASS HIT HIS WINDSHIELD AND SHATTERED. ASKED HIM IF HE SAW ANYTHING HIT MY ROOF AND HE SAID NO. DRIVER HELPED ME CLEAN UP A LOT OF THE BROKEN GLASS THAT WAS STILL ON MY ROOF. HE ALSO POINTED OUT THE DAMAGE TO THE PAINT ON THE REAR SECTION ABOVE THE LED BRAKE LIGHTS. WE EXCHANGED INFORMATION & I DECIDED TO DRIVE TO THE DEALER SINCE IT WAS NOT FAR OFF. ON THE WAY A LOT OF THE BROKEN GLASS STARTED FALLING INSIDE THE CAR. AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY ALL SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OR SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN BEFORE. SINCE THEY DID NOT HAVE THE FACILITIES TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE THEY REFERRED ME TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WHERE I ARRANGED FOR THE CAR TO BE TOWED. TOLD THE SERVICE DEPT WHAT HAPPENED AND SAID THEY WOULD INVESTIGATE. THEIR VERDICT IS THAT A ROCK OR SOMETHING HIT IT TO CAUSE THE DAMAGE. THEY WILL REPLACE THE SUNROOF OUT OF COURTESY BUT NOT COVER FOR A RENTAL CAR DESPITE A WARRANTY. SERVICE MGR SAYS HE CAN DO ONE AND NOT BOTH. NOT TO MENTION THEY WOULD NOT RETOUCH THE PAINT DAMAGE. MY INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER BECAUSE THEIR INVESTIGATION POINTS TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT SINCE THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. I AM REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS INCIDENT HAPPENING AGAIN WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT OR SERIOUS INJURIES. WORRIED ABOUT THE INTEGRITY OF THE SUNROOF. *TR
WAS TAKING TRASH TO THE DUMP, 1 PERSON'S WORTH, GOING 5 MPH 1/ OF MILE FROM MY HOME, CAR VEERED TO RIGHT EDGE OF PAVEMENT, AND WHERE A BULLDOZER HAD DRUG ROAD EDGES AND BROKE PAVEMENT OFF, CAUSED ME TO HIT A TREE AT A VERY SLOW SPEED. I REVERSED CAR, BACKED UP 50 FT. AND CAR SHUT ITSELF OFF & WINDSHIELD GOT EXTREMELY HOT, AND I GOT OUT OF VEHICLE, SMOKE COMING FROM HOOD AREA, LEFT MY PURSE, AND WALKED ACROSS ROAD TO ASK FOR FIRE EXTINGUISHER. MAN HAD JUST GOT UP, HADN'T HAD COFFEE ,AND INVITED ME IN. I WENT BACK OUTSIDE AND SAW CAR WAS BURNING, SO I STAYED ON HIS PORCH, THEN FRONT YARD. I KNEW TRASH MAY HAVE AEROSOL CANISTERS, AND NOT WORTH MY LIFE TO TRY TO GO THROUGH FIRE TO SAVE MY PURSE. COPS CAME (9:45-10:15 AM , AND SAID I LOOKED FUNNY AND ARRESTED ME ACCUSING ME OF BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MEDICATION. I WAS NOT ON ANY MEDICINE AND DEFINITELY NOT DRINKING. CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS AFTER EXPLOSION AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANOTHER FOR OVER 8 MONTHS. I AM ON DISABILITY FOR FIBROMYALGIA, NEURALGIA, & OSTEOPOROSIS, AND HOLLOW BONES. I FALL QUITE OFTEN (ONE LEG IS SHORTER THAN OTHER). OFFICER HIMSELF DREW MY BLOOD IN A PUBLIC PLACE, AND REFUSED TO LET ME SEE MY ATTORNEY 3 TIMES. I NEVER GOT TO USE A PHONE IN 2 DAYS. BUT VEHICLE WAS PROBLEMATIC FROM DAY 1 , BATTERY WOULD NOT HOLD A CHARGE, JUMP A RIDING LAWN MOWER , AND WOULD JUST CUT OFF WHILE I WAS GOING DOWN THE ROAD. STEERING WAS ALSO A PROBLEM FROM DAY ONE, LIKE TIRES WERE NEVER ALIGNED. *TR
CAR LOOSELY STEERED BARELY OFF ROAD, 1/8 MILE FROM HOME,BUMPED TREE 15' AWAY, BACKED UP, ENGINE SHUT OFF (AS USUAL SINCE DAY 2 OF LEASE), WINDSHIELD HEATED TO OVER 150 DEGREE'S IN 35 DEGREE WEATHER, SO I VACATED CAR, WHICH WAS IN FLAMES 2-3 MINUTES AND BURNED TO ASH..HAD 5 MONTHS, DAILY PROBLEMS, BATTERY, FUSES, IGNITION, NUMEROUS CALLS TO DEALER, SHOP, NO HELP, COULD EASILY HAVE DIED IN FIRETRAP ALIVE, CAR DOVE ITSELF, WHEN & WHERE IT PLEASED, AND WAS UNCONTROLLABLE.EVEN HYUNDAI MOTOR FINANCE HAS NOT PAID ON GAP COVERAGE IN 11 MONTHS, RUINING MY CREDIT TO BOOT, AND WAS OVER FINANCED PAST LEGAL LIMITS, ON A TOTAL NEW LEMON AND NOT ONLY WAS CAR NOT REPLACED AS PROMISED,I CANNOT GET A RESPONSE FROM HYUNDAI, OR HYUNDAI FINANCE.,THIS WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE, AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE TO NEVER PURCHASE A HYUNDAI PRODUCT. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.AND LOSE YOUR FRANCHISE LICENSE.I WILL HAVE TO SUE TO EVER BEGIN TO BE COMPENSATED FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE TO ME, AND BECAUSE OF YOUR PRODUCT. *TR
SNOW PREDICTED. LEFT HOME TO GO RUN ERRANDS AT 9:30 AM, CAR LOOKED SHOWROOM NEW, GOT 1/2 MILE, CAR PULLED ITSELF RIGHT (AS IT HAS PREVIOUSLY) AND BUMPED A SMALL TREE, NO DAMAGE. CAR BACKED UP TO ROADSIDE 10', CAR CUT ITSELF OFF (AS IT HAD BEFORE), WINDSHIELD WENT FROM 30 DEGREES TO 450 DEGREES IN 3 SECONDS. I LEFT MY PURSE (WITH $1200 IN IT) AND EVERYTHING AND FLED ACROSS ROAD TO SAVE MY LIFE. ASKED MAN THERE IF HE HAD A FIRE EXTINQUISHER, HE DIDN'T, ASKED ME TO STAY BECAUSE IT WAS SO COLD, AND I SAID NO, I WANTED TO CHECK MY CAR AND IN THAT 60 SECONDS, I WALKED OUT AND STOOD IN HIS DRIVEWAY AND CAR WAS TOTALLY A BLAZE. IT HAPPENED SO QUICKLY I WOULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED HAD I NOT FLED THE VEHICLE THE CAR FROM DAY 2 RARELY CRANKED, OFTEN CUT OFF GOING 5-55 MPH, PULLED OFF ROAD TO RIGHT, AND SCARED ME SPEECHLESS. LIKE IT WAS HAUNTED AND DROVE ITSELF. I ONLY HAD IT 4 MONTHS. IT WAS A DEATH TRAP AND SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PUT ON THE HIGHWAY. FOR SOME REASON, I GOT ARRESTED, I WAS TOTALLY SOBER AND HAD NO MEDICATION IN MY SYSTEM. TROOPER HAD A BREATH ALYZER, NEVER USED IT. CUFFED ME VERY TIGHTLY, READ ME NO RIGHTS, AND TOOK ME TO STATION ENTRANCE. HE GRABBED MY ARM AND DREW BLOOD (ILLEGALLY) , NO PHONE CALL, FINALLY READ MY RIGHTS, AND DENIED ME SEEING MY LAWYER 3 TIMES. ILLEGALLY. FOR 3 DAYS & NIGHTS, I WAS NEVER ALLOWED A PHONE CALL OR CODE, AM DISABLED AND HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS & HAD TO SLEEP ON A 1/4" OF FLAT PLYWOOD, THOUGH MY JOINTS DON'T TOUCH, I HAVE RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME & MUST SLEEP ELEVATED, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. I ALSO WENT WITHOUT ANY OF MY PRESCRIPTIONS 3 DAYS. ALL BECAUSE THIS SCARY CAR BURNED TO BENT METAL WITH NO DASH, NO ENGINE OR PARTS, NO TIRES, SEATS, NOTHING. SO NOT ONLY WAS I IN SHOCK, OUT OF ANY CONTACT WITHOUT MY PRESCRIPTIONS, AND HAD TO PAY $475 BOND, THOUGH I ONLY GET $969 , THIS CAR RUINED MY LIFE OVER A YEAR AGO, AND I HAVEN'T HAD A CAR SINCE.
I PURCHASED THIS CAR AT THE END OF NOVEMBER BRAND NEW. ABOUT A MONTH AGO THE WARNING ESC LIGHT CAME ON MY DASHBOARD AND WOULD NOT TURN OFF. DURING THIS TIME I HAD MINOR INCIDENTS OF THE ESC TURNING ON FOR NO REASON (DRY ROADS). BUT ON THIS MONDAY I EXPERIENCED A MAJOR INCIDENT WITH ESC TURNING ON WHILE I WAS TRAVELING AT 50 MPH DOWN A HIGHWAY (DRY ROADS). ALL FOUR WHEELS STARTED BRAKING AND I WAS DRAGGED ACROSS THE HIGHWAY AND JUST MISSING A TELEPHONE POLL. I WAS LUCKY TO GET THE CAR UNDER CONTROL AND STOPPED WITH ME AND THE CAR INTACT. I THEN CALLED THE HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT. *TR
MY CAR WAS STOPPED IN A 45 MPH ZONE WHEN IT WAS REAR-ENDED BY A TRUCK. AT THE TIME OF COLLISION MY SEAT MOVED BACK RAPIDLY ON THE RAILS AND THE BACK OF THE SEAT FLIPPED DOWN SEVERAL STOPS. OF A PASSENGER HAD BEEN SEATED BEHIND ME SHE WOULD HAVE LIKELY BEEN INJURED. I WONDER IF THIS SEAT IS SAFE AND IF THERE HAVE BEEN SIMILAR INCIDENTS? IT COULD BE A RECALL ITEM. I WAS ADVISED BY HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALER AND HAVE IT CHECKED. THE CAR IS IN THE BODY SHOP AND NEAREST DEALER IS 60 MILES... *TR
TMPS LAMP ILLUMINATES INTERMITTENTLY, HAD TIRE PRESSURES CHECKED AND THEY ARE/WERE IN COMPLIANCE WITH MANUFACTURERS STANDARDS, THE TMPS CONTINUES TO COME ON AND OFF RANDOMLY SO IT IS DIFFICULT TO KNOW FOR SURE IF THEIR IS A PROBLEM WITH A TIRE. *TR
REAR OF CAR BOUNCES AROUND WHEN TRAVELING OVER BUMPS ARE SPEEDS AS SLOW AS 25 MPH. NOW AT 14,000 MILES THE REAR DRIVERS TIRE IS WEARING BADLY ON INSIDE OF TIRE. CAR IS GETTING INCREASINGLY OR UNSTABLE AT SPEEDS WHEN GOING OVER ROUGH ROADS, RR TRACKS. DEALER HAS BEEN RUDE AND UNCOOPERATIVE AND TELLS ME TO CHANGE MY DRIVING STYLE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CAR FOR THE INEXPERIENCED DRIVER, I HAVE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE DEFECT. *TR
THE WINDSHIELD WASHER DOES NOT WORK IN BELOW 24 DEGREES. I HAVE HAD TO STOP WHILE DRIVING MANY TIMES TO CLEAN WINDSHIELD BY HAND ,PUTTING MY SELF AND OTHER DRIVERS IN GREAT DANGER. I HAVE USED MULTIPLE BRANDS OFF WASHER FLUIDS INCLUDING DE-ICERS WITH OUT SUCCESS. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 40 YEARS AND HAVE HAD MANY VEHICLES AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. 2013 ELANTRA GT (NOT ON DROP DOWN LIST) *TR
NOTICED WHEN I TEST DROVE THIS VEHICLE IN APRIL 2013 WHEN IT HIT SMALL BUMPS IN THE ROAD IT SEEMED UNSTEADY IN THE BACK. THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THE DYNAMICS OF A NEW VEHICLE I WOULD GET USED TO. I'M USED TO DRIVING DYNAMICS OF SMALL VEHICLES. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW TIMES WHERE I'VE BEEN DRIVING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 20-70MPH WHEN I HIT A BUMP ON A STRAIGHT/CURVED ROAD AND VEHICLE WOULD SHAKE WILDLY AND FEEL LIKE IT WAS OUT OF CONTROL. TODAY WE HAVE SNOW COVERED/SLUSHY ROADS AND I'VE BEEN PARTICULARLY CAUTIOUS. AT ~60MPH ON I70 (WHICH WAS CLEAR AND PLOWED), I MOVED TO THE PASSING LANE TO GO AROUND A SLOWER VEHICLE BEFORE A CREEK BRIDGE. WHEN I HIT THE EDGE OF THE BRIDGE I COMPLETED THE MANEUVER, BUT A SMALL LIP ON THE SECTION OF BRIDGE MEETING THE ROAD CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FISHTAIL AND ALMOST HIT THE VEHICLE NEXT TO ME. I WAS FIGHTING FOR CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE FOR 300 FEET, WHICH IS WORSE THAN I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN THIS VEHICLE, HENCE THE REASON I WROTE THIS COMPLAINT. IT FELT LIKE ANOTHER EXPERIENCE I HAD IN A FIAT WITH A BENT REAR AXLE, EVERY TIME IT WOULD HOP OVER A BUMP IT WOULD WOBBLE IN THE BACK END AND YET IT FELT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT BECAUSE I COULDN'T CORRECT IT QUICKLY WHEN THE CAR SHOULD HAVE SETTLED. FROM READING OTHER PEOPLE'S COMPLAINTS, IT SEEMS PLAUSIBLE THAT THE PROBLEM WITH THE ELANTRA MAY IN FACT BE IN THE FRONT END WITH THE POWER STEERING AUTO-CORRECT TO CENTER. THAT IS WHAT IT FELT LIKE I WAS FIGHTING THOSE 300 FEET, NOT THE DYNAMICS OF THE FOUR WHEELS NOT BEING SQUARE ON THE ROAD, BUT INSTEAD LIKE AS IF THE CAR WAS FIGHTING ME. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BECAUSE I COULD HAVE LOST CONTROL WITH KIDS IN THE CAR. BETWEEN THIS DATE AND LATE 11/2013 THERE HAVE BEEN 9 INSTANCES OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. 1.BACKING OUT OF PARKING LOT AT STORE 1/1/2013CAR ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 2.IN 2/2013, ENTERING OUR HOMES GARAGE, WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 2MPH, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 3.IN 5/2013, WHILE BACKING OUT OF GARAGE WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 4.AROUND 9/2013, WE WERE MOVING SLOWLY,'LESS THAN 10 MPG- AND TURNING INTO A PARKING SPOT WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 5.AROUND 10/6/2013 WE WERE PULLING INTO OUR SONS DRIVEWAY. WE WERE MOVING SLOWLY WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. THE VEHICLE STOPPED ITS FORWARD MOVEMENT WHEN IT HIT A DECORATIVE STONE COLUMN. REPAIRS WERE APPROX. $1750 TO REPAIR. 6.LATER IN 10/2013, WE WERE SLOWING DOWN AS WE APPROACHED A STOP SIGN THE CAR UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 7.IN 11/2013, WE EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR EVENT AS IN #6 WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. 8.LATER IN 11/2013, WE WERE BACKING OUT OF GARAGE WHEN THE CAR UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 9.AGAIN IN 11/2013 WE WERE ACCELERATING AS WE WERE ENTERING THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED VERY RAPIDLY EVEN AFTER REMOVING THE DRIVER'S FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL. THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE EVALUATED WITH ENGINEERS; DRIVEN WITH THE MAIN DRIVER TO INSURE IT IS BEING DRIVEN CORRECTLY. *TR

I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE SEVERAL EXTERIOR LIGHTS ( LIGHT BULBS) IN THE 7 YEARS I HAVE OWNED MY CAR, INCLUDING REAR BRAKE LIGHTS, REAR TURNING SIGNAL LIGHTS, REAR TAIL LIGHTS, AND FRONT HEADLIGHT BULBS. I CURRENTLY HAVE A LEFT SIDE REAR BRAKE LIGHT THAT CONTINUES TO GO OUT EVERY 3-6 MONTHS, JUST HAD IT REPLACED BY MY AUTO SHOP 3-4 MONTHS AGO WITH INSPECTION OF THE WIRING TO THAT LIGHT (FOUND TO BE OK).
BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS MAKE A GRINDING NOISE WHEN APPLYING BRAKES TO STOP TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. REPORTED PROBLEM TO HYUNDAI SOUTHERN STATES DEALERSHIP ON 12/30/2013. DEALER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED. AS OF 10/19/2015, THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST AND IS WORST. THIS BRAKE PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED BY CONSUMERS NATIONALLY TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS; BUT, HYUNDAI WILL NOT ADMIT TO THE SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES ON THIS PARTICULAR MODEL.
MY HYUNDAI CAME WITH KUMHO TIRES. JUST A LITTLE OVER A MONTH OLD AND ONE OF THE TIRES IS DEFECTIVE. DEALER AND HYUNDAI SAY IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM, CALL THE MANUFACTURER. TIRE HAS A PING PONG BALL SIZE BULDGE. MANUFACTURER IS RUDE AND SAYS SORRY BUT WE DON'T CARE. SEARS SAYS THAT ALL THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS THEY DEAL WITH (GOODYEAR, MICHELIN, ETC) WOULD COVER BUT THEY ALWAYS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS COMPANY. WIPER FLUID PRESSURE AND DIRECTION IS NOT ADEQUATE TO CLEAR WINDSHIELD DURING WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE MAJORITY OF THE FLUID NEVER CONTACTS THE WIPERS BEFORE RUNNING OFF TO THE SIDE. INVER GROVE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT THIS PROBLEM ON TWO OCCASIONS. ON THE FIRST VISIT, THE TECHNICIAN WHO DROVE THE CAR AGREED THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THEY SHIMMIED THE NOZZLES AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK IF NOT IMPROVED. I BROUGHT IT BACK AGAIN BECAUSE I SAW NO IMPROVEMENT AND THE PROBLEM WAS GETTING WORSE WITH THE COLD WEATHER. I TOLD THEM I FELT IT WAS A SAFETY CONCERN. THE RESPONSE ON THE SECOND VISIT WAS, AFTER FLUSHING THE SYSTEM, THE WIPER FLUID WAS PERFORMING SIMILAR TO OTHER ELANTRAS AND, SINCE THERE ARE NO ADJUSTMENTS TO MAKE, THERE WAS NOTHING FURTHER THEY COULD DO. THEY WOULD NOT SAY IF THEY AGREED THERE WAS A PROBLEM OR NOT. THEY REFERRED ME TO CORPORATE HYUNDAI. THEIR REP LOOKED AT THE VIDEO REFERENCED BELOW AND GAVE ME THE SAME RESPONSE AS THE DEALERSHIP. WHEN THE ROADS ARE DRY THE CAR DRIVES GREAT, HOWEVER WHEN THE ROADS ARE WET OR PLOWED SNOW I HAVE VERY LITTLE CONTROL OVER THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I SPENT $800 FOR NEW SNOW TIRES HOPING THAT WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE BUT IT DOES NOT. I DRIVE 150 MILES PER DAY ROUND TRIP FOR WORK AND IT IS MOSTLY INTERSTATE. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPT ABOUT ANOTHER ISSUE I AM HAVING WITH THE CAR, I TOLD HER ABOUT THIS ONE TOO. SHE SAID WE NEED TO GET YOU IN ASAP TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. I COULD TELL BY HER TONE, THIS WAS NOT A GOOD THING. I EXPRESSED TO HER THAT I HAVE A (19 MO OLD), OF WHICH I CANNOT HAVE ANY MAJOR DEFAULTS WITH MY CAR, ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING WITH HER IN IT- WHICH IS ALL THE TIME! I ASKED HER IF THIS WAS IN CONJUNCTION WITH MY BRAKES MAKING A GRINDING NOISE AND SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T KNOW. I TOLD HER I HAVE ONLY HAD THE (NEW OFF THE LOT) FOR A YEAR OR MORE AND HAVE HAD A STRING OF ISSUES. I AM NOT IMPRESSED TO SAY THE LEAST!! THIS IS MINOR IN COMPARISON TO SOME, BUT THE UPHOLSTERY ON MY SIDE ON THE RIGHT (FLOOR BOARD) HAS COMPLETELY TORN APART. IT ALMOST LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE HAD CUT IT, LIKE WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN THE LAST TIME TO GET WORKED ON FROM THIS DEALER. SHE ASSURED ME THEY WOULD NEVER CUT THE FLOOR AND I SAID WHAT HAPPENED TO IT THEN AND SHE SAID A POOR JOB WHEN MADE BY HYUNDAI. GRANTED, THEY ARE GOING TO REPLACE IT, BUT NOW I HAVE A MORE IMPORTANT ISSUE TO ATTEND TO- MY BRAKES. BAD UPHOLSTERY IS NOT GOING TO PUT ME OR MY DAUGHTER IN DANGER, BUT BAD BRAKES WILL! WHEN I ASKED THE DEALER IF ANY OF MY CURRENT AND PAST ISSUES WITH THIS CAR IS NORMAL, SHE SAID TO BE HONEST- NO IT IS NOT! AT AROUND 38000 MILES I NOTICED THAT I WAS HEARING A LOT OF NOISE OUT OF THE REAREND OF THE VEHICLE. THINKING IT WAS A BAD WHEEL BEARING I TOOK IT TO A DEALER AND THEY SAID MY REAR TIRES WERE BALD AND NEEDED REPLACED. I TOOK A LOOK AT THE REAR TIRES AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP AND NOTICED IT WAS A VERY UNEVEN AND IRREGULAR TIRE WEAR PATTERN SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS BECAUSE I NEEDED TO ROTATE MY TIRES MORE OFTEN (TIRES WERE ROTATED EVERY 3000 MILES WHEN OIL WAS CHANGED) AND THAT WAS WHY THE IRREGULAR WEAR ON ONLY THE 2 REAR TIRES. THE WEAR APPEARED AS WAVY SPOTS WHERE THE TIRE HAD NO TREAD THEN RIGHT NEXT TO THAT IT HAD PLENTY OF TREAD LEFT. SO I GAVE IN BOUGHT ALL 4 BRAND NEW TIRES AND AFTER 1500 MILES I WENT AHEAD AND ROTATED THE TIRES NOTICING THAT THE REAR TIRES HAD ALREADY BEGAN TO WEAR IN THE EXACT SAME PATTERN SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A BAD SET OF TIRES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TIRE SHOP AND HAD THEM CHECK THE ALIGNMENT ON THE BACK TIRES EVEN THOUGH IT IS A SOLID REAR AXLE. THE ALIGNMENT CHECK SHOWED THAT THE REAR WHEELS DO NOT TRACK STRAIGHT AND THAT IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE REAR TIRES TO WEAR VERY FAST. I TOOK THIS INFORMATION BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH REFUSED TO CHECK THE ALIGNMENT ON THE REAR WHEELS BECAUSE IT IS A SOLID AXLE VEHICLE AND THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT FOR IT. THEY CONTINUED TO BLAME THE TIRES AND ROTATION SCHEDULE FOR THE PROBLEM. AFTER DOING MORE RESEARCH ON THE WEB THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THE HYUNDAI ELANTRAS AND THE DEALERSHIPS REFUSE TO FIX IT EVEN KNOWING THAT PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. IF A TIRE ENDS UP BLOWING OUT DUE TO THE REAR AXLE NOT BEING MOUNTED CORRECTLY I COULD SEE THAT BEING A BIG PROBLEM. *TR
THE DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS ON MY NEW 2013 ELANTRA DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. THE LIGHTS DO NOT COME ON AUTOMATICALLY. THE OWNER'S MANUAL DOESN'T PROVIDE CORRECT INFORMATION ON HOW THIS FEATURE WORKS. THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS IS TO TURN ON THE PARKING LIGHTS, WHICH ALSO MEANS THE TAIL LIGHTS AND THE DASH LIGHTS COME ON. HOW CAN A DEALER CLAIM THE DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHT FEATURE IS INCLUDED WHEN IT TRULY ISN'T. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND NO WAY ARE THESE TRULY DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS. THE TIRE BLEW OUT THE SIDE WALL. NOW THERE ARE BUBBLES APPEARING ON THE OTHER TIRES. I CONTACTED CONTINENTAL TIRE. WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT TO A CONTINENTAL TIRE DEALER AND GIVE THEM FILE # [XXX]. I WENT TO DISCOUNT TIRE AND THEY SAID CONTINENTAL TIRE WOULD COVER 50% OF THE TWO TIRES TO BE REPLACED, FILE # [XXX]. I BELIEVE THAT THE TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE PROCEEDED TO CRASH INTO A POLE. THE AIR BAGS DID DEPLOY HOWEVER, THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE RIGHT ANKLE, MID SECTION AND THE SPINAL CORD. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN IMPOUND YARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ACCELERATION FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,278.
I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THE STEERING ON THIS CAR FROM DAY ONE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I JUST NEEDED TO GET USE TO IT. WRONG. THE CAR JUST SEEMS TO FLOAT ALL OVER THE ROAD. YOU HAVE NO CONTROL. WE DROVE IN A SNOW DUSTING ON THE ROAD AND YOU COULD NOT KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. IF YOU HIT A SLIGHT DIP IN THE PAVEMENT, YOU START TO SWAY BACK AND FORTH. IF THE DAY IS JUST A LITTLE WIND, YOU ARE CONTINUOUSLY TRYING TO CONTROL THE CAR. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR THAT HAD SUCH UNCONTROLLABLE STEERING. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. I AM CONTINUOUSLY TRYING TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. I FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS THE TIRES. I JUST SPENT $900 ON A NEW SET AND IT'S THE SAME THING. NO CONTROL. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BASED ON THE GAS MILEAGE RATING AND THE 5 STAR SAFETY RATING. I TRADED A 2012 VW PASSAT SE FOR THE ELANTRA GT. THE ELANTRA COST $5,000 LESS, BUT THE INSURANCE IS $600 MORE ANNUALLY. THE VW WAS RATED 31 MPG HIGHWAY, BUT AVERAGED 33+ MPG HIGHWAY: THE ELANTRA WAS RATED AT 37 MPG HIGHWAY, BUT AT 4 DIFFERENT SPEEDS (RESETTING THE INDICATOR BETWEEN SPEEDS), THE BEST MILEAGE IS 32 MPG. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THE CAR HAD TO BE REFUELED AT 400 MILES BECAUSE OF THE SMALL GAS TANK. NOT TOUTING THE VW, BUT I DROVE 540 BETWEEN FILLUPS. AFTER DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE I REALIZED THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT WAS LIT (MEANING OFF) EVEN THOUGH MY WIFE WAS IN IT. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WHO HAD ME SPEAK TO A SERVICE ADVISOR (SCOTT). HE TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD BUY A PILLOW SINCE MY WIFE WAS ONLY ABOUT 103 POUNDS IN WEIGHT, AND THAT THERE WERE NO ADJUSTMENTS WHICH COULD BE MADE TO THE SEAT. THIS DID NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME SO I CONTINUED TO MY SALES REP(GEORGE SPENCER). HE HAD THE SERVICE MANAGER (NESTOR DIAS) CONTACT ME AND HE BASICALLY TOLD ME THAT UNDER 150 POUNDS THE AIRBAG WON'T DEPLOY. IF I HAD REALIZED THIS UP FRONT, I WOULD NEVER HAVE LEASED THE ELANTRA.
