NHTSA Vehicle Safety Complaint Vehicle Information: Year: 2023 Make: Hyundai Model: Ioniq 5 VIN: [XXX] Mileage: Over 137,000 miles 15 States Driven: AZ, TX, GA, CA, MI (with damage here primarily) Complaint: My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has experienced persistent and severe safety failures since delivery in January 2023, including: Complete power and control loss at highway speeds Repeated BMS/12V failures (even at 30% state of charge) Nonworking rear brake lights at night for over one year False-alarming and nonfunctional parking sensors Interior wear faster than normal; more These failures have created life-threatening hazards for me and my children, who regularly ride in the vehicle. The vehicle is under an active federal safety recall, which under 49 U.S.C. § 30118–30120 requires dealers and manufacturers to repair recalled vehicles promptly, without regard to profitability or cost. Despite repeated written requests, Pedder Hyundai (Poway, CA) refused to perform recall repairs, obstructed resolution, blocked corporate contact, and threatened to tow the vehicle illegally at my expense within 48 hours, demonstrating reckless disregard for consumer safety and federal law. A police report documenting criminal endangerment, conversion, and aggravated consumer endangerment is pending, and the lender of the vehicle has been notified of breach of contract. These issues appear systemic, affecting multiple vehicles of this model, and have resulted in: Frequent, unexpected towing with surprise expenses and downtime Significant risk of injury or death due to power/control loss Repeated failures despite warranty and recall obligations I request NHTSA investigate immediately, ensure recall repairs are completed promptly, and take any action necessary to protect public safety. Available case file including Dealer correspondence showing obstruction refusal threats to ignore California and federal law INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The first time the "aux" battery was not charging completely. 2nd time pretty much same issue, they claimed to have performed a software update, 3rd time warning lights came on "Problem, check electrical system" ..something like this. They told me to bring the vehicle to the dealership. After reading the problems stem from the ICCU, I decided to call them to ask if I should tow it in, due to all the warnings. After this we could not even get into the vehicle or drive it. Took us and the tow driver 4 attempts to get it out of the garage, down driveway and it had to be pulled onto the flat bed. They agreed and said that if there were any tow fees, they would pay them. Furthermore they said they would supply a vehicle to use while mine was being repaired. This was on Jan 25th, they still have not returned my vehicle, claiming they are waiting on parts, I've had to call them to check on it, this week NO contact what so ever.
Hyundai Ioniq5 acquired new in September 2023 - mileage at the time of incident 10,800 miles - Michelin Primacy AS 235/55 R19 - OEM tires installed by the manufacturer. Front tire started to go off balance causing steering wheel vibrations and shaking that increased with speed - car was not drivable above 55MPH due to excessive shaking and vibrations of steering wheel - this presents safety concern as it may lead to loss of control and excessive wear and tear on other suspension / wheel components. I took the vehicle to a local tire shop (Town Fair Tire in Norwalk CT - authorized dealer of Michelin tires) - got wheels rotated, balances and alignment adjusted. The issue persisted - on the second visit tire shop dismounted one of the tires and discovered internal foam band unglued and clumped on one side of the tire causing off-balance. The shop recommended removal of the foam material and rebalancing of the tire to correct the manufacturing error. I contacted Hyundai and reported this as a safety issue as well.
Unexpected and uncontrollable shaking of steering while driving at speeds over 40mph
