RIGHT FRONT DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF WHILE STANDING STILL UNDER NORMAL USE WHEN MY 15-YEAR OLD SON OPENED IT. NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY AS 60K HAD PASSED AND DEALER WOULD NOT COVER. I HAD DEALER REPLACE HANDLE. FIVE MONTHS LATER, LEFT REAR DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF WHEN MY 13-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OPENED IT WHILE GETTING IN CAR. BOTH EVENTS HAPPENED UNDER NORMAL USE BUT STANDING STILL. THIS COULD POSE A SAFETY HAZARD IF IT CAUSES THE DOOR TO OPEN WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING. I CONTEND THAT THERE IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THAT THE DOOR HANDLE IS NOT DESIGNED STURDY ENOUGH (IT IS PLASTIC), AND HYUNDAI SHOULD FIX AND RECALL. *TR
MY 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN ON ME 2-TIMES IN LESS THAN 5-MINUTES TIMES WHILE I WAS DRIVING TODAY. I WAS ON MY WAY TO ENTER THE EXPRESSWAY. THE POWER STEERING AND EVERYTHING JUST SHUT DOWN. MY CAR JUST MADE A SUDDEN STOP. THANK GOD I HAD NOT ENTERED THE EXPRESSWAY AND TOOK THE SIDE STREETS HOME. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A REAL SAFETY HAZARD TO MYSELF, THE PASSENGERS RIDING WITH ME AS WELL AS OTHER DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND FAMILIES ON THE ROAD. MY VEHICLE HAS 53,215 MILES, THERE IS NO WAY THIS SHOULD BE HAPPENING. IF THIS IS HAPPENING TO MY VEHICLE, I KNOW IT'S OCCURRING IN OTHER SONATA'S AND OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLES BASE ON WHAT I SEE IN ONLINE ENTRIES ON THE 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA AND HYUNDAI VEHICLES. MANUFACTURES MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DEFECTED PRODUCTS PLACE ON THE MARKET. I KNOW THAT I'M A SMALL VOICE AGAINST A LARGE CORPORATION, BUT IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO INVESTIGATE I KNOW THAT MY CLAIM WILL BE VALIDATED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR HANDLES BECAME FRACTURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT TWO OF THE DOOR HANDLES DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENTER THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
BOTH OF THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR HANDLES BROKE OFF OF THE DOORS WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF EACH OTHER, UNDER NORMAL USE. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, MY WIFE'S 2010 SONATA HAD JUST OVER 78,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, JUST OVER THE 75000 BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. I CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE HANDLES WERE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT MY BEST OPTION WOULD BE TO CONTACT HYUNDAI AMERICA TO SEEK A RESOLUTION. I DID THAT AND OPENED A CASE WITH THEM. AFTER PROVIDING INFORMATION ON THE VEHICLE, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE COMPONENTS AND NONE WAS BEING CONSIDERED. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR THE VEHICLE IF A RESCUE ATTEMPT HAD TO BE MADE. NOT TO MENTION THAT THIS IS A TERRIBLE INCONVENIENCE, SINCE WE HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND HAVE TO FIND OTHER WAYS OF ACCESSING THE PASSENGER SEATS OTHER THAN WITH THE DOORS. THE HANDLES ARE MADE OF PLASTIC, AND I BELIEVE WOULD BE PRONE TO YET ANOTHER BREAKAGE IF REPLACED WITH FACTORY PARTS. I AM FILING A COMPLAINT REGARDING THE DOOR HANDLES ON HYUNDAI VEHICLES. I DRIVE A HYUNDAI SONATA AND HAVE HAD THE DOOR HANDLE BREAK OFF THREE SEPARATE TIMES IN MY HAND. WHEN I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO GET FIXED, I AM TOLD THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE, THEY REPLACE IT WITH THE SAME STYLE HANDLE AND SEND ME ON MY WAY. MY CONCERN WITH THIS, BESIDES THAT IT IS A KNOWN DEFECT THAT IS NOT COVERED BY THE COMPANY, IS THAT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE A YOUNG CHILD IN A CARSEAT IN MY CAR WITH ME ALMOST ALWAYS. IF THE DOOR HANDLES CONTINUE TO BREAK OFF, THERE IS NO WAY FOR ME TO ENTER THE CAR FROM THE OUTSIDE AND SHE IS TRAPPED INSIDE THE CAR IN HER CARSEAT. *TR
DRIVING ALONG AT ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR WHEN VEHICLE ENGINE DIED. RESTARTED VEHICLE AND IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. I WAS NEAR HOME SO I WAS ABLE TO GET IT HOME WHERE IT STAYED UNTIL I COULD GET IT TOWED TO A HYUNDAI DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED POWER STEERING PUMP, THE POWER STEERING RACK AND PINION, GEAR AND LINKAGE ASSEMBLY AND PERFORMED A 4-WHEEL ALIGNMENT. I WAS EXTREMELY BLESSED THAT I WAS NOT ON THE LOCAL INTERSTATE GOING AT THE MAXIMUM SPEED ALLOWED. I NOTE THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE STEERING ON THE 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA AND OTHER EARLIER AND LATER YEAR SONATAS. IT SEEMS THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. *TR
VEHICLE STARTED TO MAKE A HEAVY GRINDING NOISE FROM PASSENGER SIDE REAR WHEEL. CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED A FRESH GOUGE IN THE ROTOR. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ITEM, AND NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY (EVEN THOUGH A "GOLD" WARRANTY HAD BEEN PURCHASED WITH CALIPER REPLACEMENT PLAINLY INCLUDED). THIS INDIANAPOLIS DEALERSHIP WANTED TO CHARGE $380 TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOUND THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE REAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 40% OF THE LIFE LEFT ON THE BRAKE PADS AND ONLY NORMAL WEAR TO THE ROTOR, WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS WORN DOWN TO THE METAL ON THE PADS AND HAD RENDERED THE ROTOR UNSERVICEABLE. IT WAS ALSO NOTED THAT THE WEAR INDICATOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS BROKEN, AND DID NOT GIVE THE NORMAL AUDIO WARNING OF EXCESSIVE WEAR. WHEN ASKED WHY THE REAR SHOULD WEAR OUT FASTER THAN THE FRONT (WHICH IS WHAT ALL LOCAL BRAKE SHOPS TOLD ME WOULD HAPPEN), THE HYUNDAI SERVICE MANAGER DID NOT HAVE ANY REPLY. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL INSTANCES OF SIMILAR FAILURES, AND EVEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED IN NEW YORK STATE FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. A STICKING BRAKE CALIPER IS SUSPECTED, BUT COULD NOT BE CONFIRMED. REAR BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, AND HARDWARE WERE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. THE BRAKE CALIPER WAS CLEANED, LUBED, AND REINSTALLED. DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT HONOR ANY WARRANTY OBLIGATION FOR THIS DEFECT. FRONT BRAKES ALSO SHOWED AT LEAST 40% OF THEIR LIFE REMAINING ON THE PADS. *TR
I WENT OUT TO START MY CAR AND IT WOULDN'T START. I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK AFTER A JUMP WOULDN'T WORK. I BOUGHT THE CAR A YEAR AND A HALF AGO AND WHEN THE DRIVER TESTED THE BATTERY, IT WASN'T DEAD BUT IT WASN'T GREAT. I REPLACED THE BATTERY ($95 AT WALMART) AND THE CAR STARTED. FOR A DAY. THE NEXT DAY THE CAR WOULDN'T START AGAIN, WHEN WE REALIZED IT WAS THEN THE STARTER. I PURCHASED AND INSTALLED A NEW STARTER ON THE VEHICLE ($105 ONLINE) ISSUE RESOLVED. PRETTY YOUNG OF A CAR FOR THE STARTER TO GO. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE DOOR HANDLE BECAME COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THE ABOVE INCIDENT THAT I'M REPORTING IS THE SECOND DOOR HANDLE TO BREAK ON THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS THE DRIVER DOOR HANDLE WHICH BROKE SOMETIME IN 2012. THE OUTER HANDLES JUST BREAK AND CANNOT BE USED TO OPEN THE DOOR. THE DOOR CAN BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE. JUST YESTERDAY, 5-5-2014, THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE ON THE DRIVER SIDE ALSO BROKE IN THE SAME MANNER. THE FIRST TWO WERE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY, WHICH I'M TOLD EXPIRED AT 60,000 MILES. MY CAR HAS 68,000 MILES NOW. SO A TOTAL OF THREE DOOR HANDLES HAS BROKEN, ONE TO GO. IT IS REPAIRABLE, BUT THERE IS A 3 TO 4 WEEK WAIT, FOR THE PARTS, FOR IT TO GET PAINTED THAN GET INSTALLED. WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET, THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE RECALLED AND METAL DOOR HANDLES BE INSTALLED. *TR
CAME OUT TO WORK PARKING LOT. CAR WOULD NOT START. BATTERY WAS FAILING, NOT DEAD. REPLACED BATTERY [WITH DURALAST BATTERY (AUTOZONE - 09/19/2013) - $115]; DID NOT RESOLVE ISSUE. STARTER WAS TESTED AND HAD FAILED. REPLACED THE STARTER [WITH DURALAST STARTER (AUTOZONE - 09/20/2013) - $267.11]; RESOLVED THE ISSUE. *TR
THE DOOR HANDLES ON MY VEHICLE HAVE BROKEN WITHOUT BEING EXCESSIVELY USED. MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF WHILE MY MOTHER WAS GETTING INTO THE VEHICLE. 3 MONTHS AGO I OPENED THE BACK DRIVER SIDE DOOR TO PUT IN GROCERIES AND THE HANDLE BROKE. I AM THE SOLE USER OF THE VEHICLE AND I RARELY HAVE PASSENGERS IN MY CAR. THE DEALERSHIP CHARGES $200 TO REPAIR IT EACH TIME. I HAVE RESEARCHED OTHER FORUMS AND OTHERS ARE HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM ON THE SAME MODEL AND YEAR. IT'S A SAFETY HAZARD FOR ME BECAUSE I HAVE TO GO AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE OF MY CAR TO PUT STUFF IN OR TAKE STUFF OUT AND IN MANY CASES I AM IN PARKING LOTS WHERE THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS. SOMEONE COULD EASILY PUSH ME OUT AND/OR IF I AM INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND HAVE PASSENGERS, THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET OUT THROUGH THAT DOOR SINCE IT WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE NOR THE INSIDE. ON SUNDAY 9/1, I CAME OUT OF CHURCH AND COULD NOT OPEN MY PASSENGER BACK DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. MY SON TOOK IT TO THE DEALER ON 9/4 WHERE I GET MY SERVICE DONE, HE WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE $80 TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM BECAUSE MY WARRANTY HAD RUN OUT, BUT THEY WOULD DEDUCT THE $80 FROM THE PRICE OF REPAIR, I DID NOT GET IT FIXED, LOW AND BEHOLD ON 9/4 AFTER GETTING OFF WORK I WENT INTO THE STORE, CAME OUT AND MY PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE, VERY DANGEROUS, IF I HAVE AN ACCIDENT NO ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO GET ME OUT NOR MY GRANDSON OUT WHO SIT BEHIND THE PASSENGER SEAT, HE IS 5. WHAT CAN I DO IF I CANNOT AFFORD TO GET THE DOORS REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 47MPH, I WAS APPROACHING THE ROAD TO TURN RIGHT AND I TAPPED THE BRAKE TO KICK OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL AS I HAVE DONE BEFORE. I THEN LOOKED AT THE TRAFFIC AROUND ME AND HAD TO FIX MY SEAT BELT WHICH TIGHTENED TOO MUCH, TAKING MY EYES OFF THE ROAD A MOMENT. WHEN I LOOKED UP THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME WAS AT A DEAD STOP, AND I WAS STILL TRAVELING AT 47MPH! THE CRUISE CONTROL NEVER TURNED OFF TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN, I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, WHICH HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER. MY INSURANCE DECIDED TO TOTAL MY VEHICLE. *TR
MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE ORIGINAL BLACK STEEL WHEELS ON MY VEHICLE HAVE RUSTED. I AM SURPRISED THAT A VEHICLE WILL SUFFER RUST ON ITS WHEELS AFTER SO SHORT A PERIOD OF TIME. NO I DO NOT DRIVE ONTO OR NEAR A BEACH. MY CAR DID NOT SUFFER SEA WATER DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF HURRICANE SANDY. THE BLACK PAINT ON MY WHEELS IS NOW A RUSTY BROWN. DEFECTIVE REAR BRAKES. ONE REAR BRAKE PAD WAS DOWN TO METAL. GRINDING AND SMOKING. PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED BY HYUNDAI DEALER. NOW AT 38,000 MILES CAR IS IN LOCAL SHOP FOR SAME WORK. ONE OF THREE PADS ARE DOWN TO METAL. DIAGNOSED AS DEFECTIVE BRAKE CALIPER. CLAIM WILL BE MADE TO HYUNDAI BUT MANY OTHERS HAVE BEEN DENIED PER INTERNET AND N.Y. CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. THIS IS CONSIDERED TO BE A POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A BUILDING AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE REPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 59,870.

I OWN A 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA, WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE NEW. SINCE JULY 2013, I HAVE HAD 3 DOOR HANDLES BREAK OFF IN MY HAND. I AM A SINGLE PERSON, THAT DOES NOT HAVE CONTINUOUS USE OF THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AND REAR HANDLES OR THE DRIVER SIDE REAR DOOR. AT THIS TIME, I HAVE ONE DOOR HANDLE LEFT ON MY CAR, WHICH IS THE DRIVER SIDE AND VERY WORRIED IF THIS FALLS OFF, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET INTO MY VEHICLE. AT THIS POINT, THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE. IF I HAD ANYONE IN MY VEHICLE AND WAS IN AN ACCIDENT, THE RESCUE ATTENDANT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ASSIST IN GETTING PEOPLE OUT. I HAVE TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT. AND THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE AND WAS TOLD BECAUSE OF MILEAGE, I AM OUT OF WARRANTY AND HYUNDAI WILL NOT COVER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DOOR HANDLES. BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE, BUT I BELIEVE THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT OF THE DOOR HANDLES AND A SAFETY ISSUE, HYUNDAI SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL. *TR

I WAS SENT A SAFETY RECALL LETTER FROM HYUNDAI STATING THAT THE STOP LAMP SWITCH INTERMITTENTLY MALFUNCTIONS. THIS HAPPENS TO ME CONTINUOUSLY. I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP WHEN I WAS VACATIONING IN CHICAGO, AS I THOUGHT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY CAR, AND THAT I MIGHT BE IN A DANGEROUS ROAD SITUATION. THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND COULD FIND NOTHING, BUT I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSIS. I HAVE ASKED HYUNDAI TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THIS SINCE IT TURNS OUT TO BE A MALFUNCTION, THAT CAUSED ME TO SPEND MONEY TO TRY TO DIAGNOSE. THEY REFUSE TO REIMBURSE ME, EVEN THOUGH THEY ADMIT IT IS A MALFUNCTION ON THEIR PART...BUT I WASN'T NOTIFIED OF THIS UNTIL 4 MONTHS AFTER BEING CHARGED TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. *TR
BACK REAR BRAKE SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS GRINDING AND BRAKE PEDAL VERY SOFT. TOOK FOR REPAIR WHILE OUT OF STATE. THEY REPLACE ALL 4 BREAK PADS AND ROTORS. NEXT DAY I WENT BACK AND COMPLAINED THAT I SMELLED A BURNING SMELL AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS NORMAL. ON JULY 8 HEARD GRINDING SOUND WHICH WAS SEVERE ON RIGHT REAR BRAKE. REPAIR SHOP OWNER SAID THE CALIPER RIGHT REAR SEIZED AND DESTROYED BRAKES. ALL ROTORS AND PADS ON REAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR SHOP SHOWED ME THE PAD AND ROTOR FROM THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE AND I SAW THAT THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT OF A PAD AND COULD PLAINLY SEE HOW THE MEAL ON BOTH THE PAD AND ROTOR WERE GROUND. I BELIEVE THAT I PREVIOUSLY HAD THE BRAKES REPAIRED BUT CAN'T REMEMBER THE SPECIFICS. *TR
DURING AN INSPECTION I WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I THEN TOOK THE CAR FOR A SECOND OPINION WHICH VERIFIED THAT THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS SURPRISED AS THE CAR HAD ONLY ABOUT 53K MILES AND THE FRONT BRAKE PADS WERE STILL GOOD (ALTHOUGH I WAS INFORMED THEY HAD ABOUT ANOTHER 60,000 MILES). UP TO NOW THE CAR HAS RUN WELL WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE FRONT DOOR LATCH BEING REPLACED WHICH I KNOW IS ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THE HYUNDAI SONATAS. I DID THINK HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER FOR BOTH ISSUES. *TR

ALSO, I HAD NOT BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO BE SERVICED AT A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP... THAT I WAS GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE. I HAVE READ THE OTHER COMPLAINTS. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. I HAD A CAR FAX REPORT DONE AT THE TIME I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED. WE ONLY SAW A FEW MINOR SERVICES. THESE ARE HYUNDAI OEM BRAKES. I HAVE BEEN READING NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT REAR BRAKE ISSUES ON HYUNDAI VEHICLES. I HAVE ALSO READ THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAW SUITE IN NEW YORK OVER THIS SAME ISSUE. I WANTED TO MAKE A REPORT AND POSSIBLY FIND OUT IF THERE ARE ANY PLANS FOR AN INVESTIGATION. THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) TURNS OFF RANDOMLY BY ITS SELF WHILE THE CAR ENGINE IS ON. PRESSING THE ESC BUTTON TO TURN ESC BACK ON DOES NOT WORK. TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND THEN TURNING IT BACK ON SOMETIMES TAKES CARE OF THE PROBLEM.
