To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally escalate an unresolved safety issue involving my 2017 Hyundai Tucson (VIN: [XXX] ) that has now been ongoing for over two years. I have made repeated attempts to complete a safety recall repair through multiple authorized Hyundai dealerships, including Hyundai of [XXX] and Hyundai in [XXX] . Despite scheduling several appointments, I have consistently been turned away, had appointments effectively canceled, or been told that no one is available to perform the repair. This has occurred across more than one location and over an extended period of time. This is unacceptable. A federally mandated safety recall especially one involving the engine is not optional and must be completed within a reasonable timeframe. The continued failure to complete this repair places me at risk and reflects a serious breakdown in both dealership accountability and corporate oversight. Additionally, my vehicle has experienced significant paint chipping. While I understand this may not be a safety recall issue, it has affected the overall condition and value of my vehicle. Given the prolonged delay and inconvenience I have experienced, I am requesting that this concern also be reviewed for potential goodwill repair or coverage. At this point, I am requesting immediate action: Assignment of a case manager A confirmed and honored appointment date for recall repair at a dealership that is able to complete the work Written confirmation that the repair will be completed without further delay Information regarding a loaner vehicle or transportation if the repair requires extended time Please note that I am filing a formal complaint with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office due to the repeated failure to complete a federally required safety recall. If this matter is not resolved promptly, I will pursue additional consumer protection and legal remedies. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I JUST BOUGHT THIS 2017 TUCSON LIMITED A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AGO, HAVE NOT EVEN PUT GAS IN IT YET, AND I JUST HAD A SCARY EXPERIENCE OF NO ACCELERATION FROM STOP(S). MUCH AS OTHERS HAVE DESCRIBED IT, WHEN TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNED GREEN I HIT THE PEDAL... TO THE FLOOR AND ALMOST NOTHING (2MPH)... ABOUT 5 SECONDS LATER IT SLOWLY BEGAN TO REV INTO SLOW ACCELERATION AND I LIMPED TO THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT AND PROCESS REPEATED. AS SITTING MOTIONLESS IN A BUSY INTERSECTION IS NERVE RACKING, I JUST HOPE NOBODY WOULD PLOW INTO ME. I TOO REGRET THIS MAY BE A HIDDEN HYUNDAI ISSUE, AND HAVE SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH DEALER TO TRY AND ADDRESS THIS SAFETY ISSUE, ASSUMING THEY WILL RESET COMPUTER.
THE SEAT BELT IS HANGING UP INSIDE . I CANT GET OUT OF IT WITH OUT PULLING SOME TIME IT WORKS SOME TIME IT DOSE NOT. HAD IT IN TWICE WORKS WHEN I GET THERE NOW WHAT IT HAS TO BE FIX. IT ONLY HAS 600 MILES ON IT.
WE JUST PURCHASED A 2017 HYUNDAI TUCSON SPORT. THE CAR HAS A SERIOUS ISSUE OF NO ACCELERATION AFTER A STOP, MERGING, PASSING ON THE HIGHWAY AND TURNING AT AN INTERSECTION. THE CAR HESITATES WHEN YOU HIT THE ACCELERATOR, SOMETIMES LEAVING YOU NEARLY STOPPED IN A AN INTERSECTION WAITING FOR A CAR TO HIT YOU. IF YOU CHOOSE TO CHANGE LANES ON A HIGHWAY THE CAR WILL HESITATE WHEN YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR TO MAKE THE LANE CHANGE. MY WIFE HAS STOPPED DRIVING THE CAR DUE TO THE SERIOUSNESS OF NO ACCELERATION AND SAFETY CONCERNS. WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE DIAGNOSTICS SHOW THAT THE CAR IS FINE AND IT IS HOW THE HYUNDAI TRANSMISSION WORKS IN THESE VEHICLES. I THINK THE CAR COULD BE A "LEMON." NOT SURE WHAT TO DO.
I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE AND EVERY 3 MONTHS THEY 'ADJUST' IT TO FIT MY DRIVING HABITS. IT'S A DANGEROUS VEHICLE AND DOES NOT ACCELERATE WHEN IT SHOULD. I CAN NEVER TRUST IT TO PULL INTO TRAFFIC BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S GOING TO MOVE. IT HAS SLIPPED INTO WHAT I WOULD CALL NEUTRAL AND HAD NO POWER AT ALL, JUST ROLLED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED IT BUT DO NOT SEE THE ORIGINAL COMPLAINT FILED. THIS IS A DANGEROUS VEHICLE AND NOT TRUSTWORTHY. I PURCHASED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, IF NOT, I'M SURE I WOULD HAVE ADDITIONAL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS VEHICLE. I WANT TO GET RID OF IT BUT KNOW IT'S NOT WORTH NEAR WHAT I PAID FOR IT BECAUSE IF THIS TRANSMISSION. HESITATION HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. THERE'S NO WAY TO PINPOINT ONE DATE BUT THE FIRST TIME WAS JUST AFTER I PURCHASED IT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 HYUNDAI TUCSON. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE AND JERKED RAPIDLY. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND VIN WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
TRANSMISSION DOES NOT CONSISTENTLY SHIFT THROUGH GEARS. UNDER ACCELERATION, IT WILL SOMETIMES SHIFT FROM 1-2- NEUTRAL INSTEAD OF GOING INTO 3RD GEAR. IF YOU DEACCELRATE AND THEN TRY TO ACELERATE AS WHEN COMING TO A TURN, THE CAR HAS EXTREME HESITATION AND SOMETIME WILL JUST REV TO 3,000RPM WITHOUT ANY MOVEMENT...AGAIN LIKE IT IS IN NEUTRAL. DEALERSHIP SAYS THIS IS ALL BY DESIGN AND I SHOULD ADJUST MY DRIVING HABITS TO ACCOMMODATE THIS DANGEROUSLY DESIGNED VEHICLE.
When accelerating from a stop, the vehicle "chugs" or hesitated substantially before actually accelerating. There is usually a noticeable jerk at that point as well. Concern is this usually happens when turning and has caused safety issues related being stuck in an intersection until the transmission releases and allows the vehicle to accelerate. Several trips to the dealership have provided no repair/relief to the issue. We are always informed its a known issue with the double-clutch engine and just something we need to get used to. Most recently, the transmission is "slipping" when accelerated. This has happened at minimum 5 times in the past month.
Excessive oil consumption
My 2017 Hyundai Tucson is experiencing severe oil consumption, which appears to be related to a known manufacturing defect affecting Hyundai engines from this period. My vehicle is burning through oil rapidly between normal oil change intervals, and it has begun showing signs of low oil levels despite no external leaks. This creates a serious safety concern because the engine can fail without warning. The dealership has acknowledged that excessive oil consumption is a known issue for this engine but refuses to provide assistance because I do not have “enough oil change documentation” over the years. However, this issue is not caused by lack of maintenance — it is a widespread internal defect that Hyundai has issued multiple technical service bulletins for. My car has been maintained, and oil changes were performed at regular intervals, even if I do not have complete paperwork. The rapid oil burning is ongoing and dangerous. I am concerned about the engine seizing, stalling, or failing while driving, which could lead to a crash. This is a safety hazard that should be investigated and included with other Hyundai engine cases. Requested Action: I am asking NHTSA to investigate this oil consumption defect affecting the 2017 Hyundai Tucson and require Hyundai to provide a remedy, including repair or engine replacement, regardless of perfect maintenance documentation, since this problem stems from a manufacturing flaw.
