NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Hyundai Veloster. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I took my 2016 Veloster in because my car was included in the rod bearing shavings possibly going back into engine and cause fire. I have since taken my car proven they didn’t pull the filters out or the oil pan to look for shavings as it’s should be check that way to ensure no findings of metal In oil. My car was in their service for over 28 hours without it being looked at. I called and somehow 15 minutes later the car is done and come get it and nothing is wrong ! I call BS my car is still a safety problem. I still have the bogging of the engine and times I press gas and car won’t move. My family owns a collision shop grew up around cars still am and there is no way you can plug a computer into the module and it show you metal shavings. Can only be done by removing filter cutting it open and pulling the oil pan. I asked to see it and the refused ! I am not happy with my car and how it cannot drive normal and it’s a serious safety concern. I want my engine replaced as the recall states or replace my entire car I’m filing a law suit against Hyundai and their lack Of concern or lying and not properly handling such a Serious recall. Till you pull my engine and prove to me there is zero unwanted metal in my engine I will continue to contact news shows the news papers and motor trend. I refuse to be treated like I’m an idiot when I had questions and asked them about the pan being pulled and filter removed they said we only need to connect it to the computer. That’s a lie you cannot get metal settlement from a computer !! I have now had 2 other mechanics look at it and they will testify my engine needs to be pulled out replaced and or get me into a safe car or the lawsuit will only cost Hyundai
Engine has a knock to it, and only drove it for about 5 month's
NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET, MY VIN WAS JUST ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL AND I WANT TO GET IT CHECKED
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V746000 (ENGINE). THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AND COMING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE LOSS MOTIVE POWER AND STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO HAD REPLACED THE ENGINE PREVIOUSLY DUE TO AN OIL CHANGE THAT WAS SERVICED INCORRECTLY. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OVER THE 12,000 MILS WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO AUTOMAX HYUNDAI (3221 E CENTRAL TEXAS EXPY, KILLEEN, TX 76543) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOWED THE SYMPTOMS OF THE RECALL HOWEVER, SINCE THE ORIGINAL ENGINE HAD BEEN REPLACED, THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 114,000.
WHILE DRIVING 60 MILES AN HOUR ON THE INTERSTATE HEADING TO WORK I BEGIN TO HEAR A KNOCKING FROM MY ENGINE. I PUT MY FLASHERS ON AND BEGIN TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE I BEGIN TO SMELL SMOKE. I WAS ABLE TO NAVIGATE INTO THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND TURN THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. I CHECKED THE OIL JUST TO MAKE SURE BECAUSE OF THE SMELL AND THE OIL WAS DEPLETED. I PUT THREE LAYERS OF OIL INTO MY CAR SO I COULD GET IT STARTED ENOUGH TO GET IT TO THE EXPRESS OIL CHANGE NEARBY. I DROPPED MY CAR OFF THERE AND THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE HAD FAILED. I MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH MY DEALER WHO FINALLY CONTACTED ME BACK TODAY SAYING THEY WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WAS PART OF THE RECALL. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED BY HYUNDAI OR MY DEALERSHIP THAT MY ENGINE WAS RECALLED. I CURRENTLY AM WITHOUT A CAR AND WAS TOLD THAT A SERVICE VEHICLE MAY BE PROVIDED IF IT'S DEEMED THAT MY ENGINE FAILED DUE TO THE RECALLED ISSUE. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT $200 IN UBER RIDES.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine) and the dealer-installed a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System; however, while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle began to stall. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to push the vehicle to the side of the road with assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. Then, the vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who diagnosed that the transmission was in great condition; however, the engine was not communicating with the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who completed a transmission relearn; however, the vehicle was sluggish while accelerating from a complete stop. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the engine oil, the engine was knocking loudly, and there was a significant amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust. The dealer reset the Knock Sensor Detection System software. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring and the vehicle would not exceed 45 MPH. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer - Hyundai of Yuma (1125 E 32nd St, Yuma, AZ 85365) who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The second dealer sent a diagnostic report to the manufacturer and requested a new engine; however, the manufacturer denied the request due to the vehicle having a salvage title. The contact stated that only the rear end of the vehicle was reconstructed as the vehicle was involved in a crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,900.
I have done a lot of research on my car when it started having issues with major oil burning/consumption (I took it in because I had an engine recall and they did their testing and said no recall for my car). And since 2021, I haven't had a consistent working heater and a/c because a wiring issue. Which I have spoke to hyundai on a few occasions and told me "you just need a new hvac control head unit" which I had already replaced. The harness connector was fried, had that replaced by someone I know. May be not to standards, but it would usually work with most vehicles. I have replaced the head unit 3 times now, and the wiring harness 3 times. And it eventually fries the knob control for my blower speed. I have an 16 month old child and its a safety issue. The wires keep frying (my resistor has been replaced a few times thinking that was the issue), telling me the wires are not capable of the output for something so simple. In my research, this has happened to thousands of other velosters around the year of mine. And one was a mechanic and said it is a safety issue. It can catch on fire, and this should be a recall on all cars. I've also read how hyundai has told people with recalls, their cars were fine (after testing) then the engine blows and they're incompetent and so not care to help its consumers. Please help me somehow?

THE DASH TOUCH SCREEN IS UNRESPONSIVE
THE PLUG BEHIND THE AC CONTROL PANEL (THE BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH) HAS MELTED BECAUSE THE CURRENT ISN'T BEING CONDUCTED PROPERLY. THIS ISSUE STARTED MONTHS AGO WHEN I NOTICED THE AC CONTROL KNOB WAS GETTING STUCK & STOPPED WORKING ON THE NUMBERS. THIS LAST WEEK I SMELT SMOKE COMING FROM THE AC CONTROL PANEL, WHICH IS WHAT LED ME TO REMOVE THE CONSOLE TO SEE BEHIND. APPARENTLY, THIS IIS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT OF THE 2012-2016 VELOSTERS & SOME PEOPLE HAVE HAD THEIR DASH SET ON FIRE BEFORE. I FEAR FOR MY SAFETY IF THE CAR WERE EVER TO SET FIRE BECAUSE OF THIS DESIGN FLAW & I WERE DRIVING. I, & OTHER PEOPLE, COULD DIE FROM THIS. HYUNDAI HAS NEVER ISSUED A RECALL OR ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE.

THE PROBLEM STARTED WITH A TICKING NOISE. I CHANGED THE OIL HOPING THAT THIS WOULD RESOLVE THE ISSUE BUT NOTHING CHANGED. SO, ON THE WAY HOME FROM RUNNING ERRANDS I HIT THE GAS AND THE CAR MADE A BUNCH OF LOUD NOISES AND THEN STALLED. IT ALSO BEGAN LEAKING OIL. I REMOVED THE PANEL FROM UNDERNEATH TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED AND SAW A BUNCH OF ALUMINUM FRAGMENTS ALL OVER THE PANEL.
ENGINE KNOCKING. SOUNDS LOUDER EVERY YEAR. PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER 2 YEAR NOW. VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES ON IT. KNOCKS HARD ESPECIALLY WHEN IDLING. KNOCKS, RATTLES, HISSES. MAKES SO MUCH NOISE HAVE TO TURN VEHICLE OFF WHEN IDLING. WORRIED FOR MY SAFETY WHILE ON THE ROAD. IS MY VEHICLE INCLUDED IN THE ENGINE ROD BEARING RECALLS. MY ISSUES MATCH PERFECTLY TO AN UNOFFICIAL NOTICE I RECEIVED. PLEASE HELP ME OUT. I HAVE VIDEO OF THE SOUND. VIDEO FILE LARGE. CAN'T UPLOAD.
DRIVING THE VEHICLE JUST FINE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON GIVES CODE P0014 (CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR) TAKE IT TO SHOP RUN DIAGNOSTIC. ROD BEARINGS DAMAGED ON CYLINDERS 3&4
LEAKING!! VERY DANGEROUSLY
MY CAR HESITATED FROM A STOP SIGN, THEN LAUNCHED FORWARD CAUSING IT TO UNCONTROLLABLY JUMP FORWARD VERY FAST. WHEN I WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES THEY FAILED TO ACTIVE, AND HAD TO PULL THE E BRAKE. THE CAR HAS HAD A SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE TCM ON MY DCT TRANSMISSION BUT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO NOT BE ABLE TO BE FIXED. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT OR DEATH.
MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN RECALLED AND THEY DO NOT HAVE A 'REMEDY' FOR IT. I AM STUCK WITH A CAR THAT CAN NOT BE FIXED BY THE DEALERSHIP.

I have a recall on my 2016 Veloster Nav And Hyundai hasn’t fix it, I drive my car everyday to go to work and i feel that my car is going to die soon, it’s feels unsafe, I would like to fix my car and I have call the dealership and they haven’t say anything about this just to wait, I can’t wait my car is my toll to go work
Brakes intermittently malfunction - when issue occurs, brake pedal will loosely sink to floor without slowing the car down and will only engage suddenly when the pedal is pressed all the way to the bottom. Safety of driver, other drivers, and pedestrians are put at risk because the car cannot be reliably stopped. In the latest incident, the driver could not get the brakes to engage and had to swerve the vehicle into the sidewalk to avoid pedestrians. The malfunction occurs randomly, mostly in stop-and-go situations (traffic, stop signs, parking lot, traffic lights, etc.). Malfunction has persisted for the last 8 months. There has been 3 attempts to fix by the dealership from which the car was purchased - replacing brake pads and rotors, flushing the brake line, and replacing the ABS system. The dealership was able to replicate the issue. The issue has returned after every fix attempt and vehicle is with the dealership for a fourth attempt. No warnings or messages have come up from the vehicle to indicate the issue.

ENGINE STALLS AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHUDDERS SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving at 40 mph, the oil pressure warning light illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and check the oil and noticed the oil was low. The driver placed oil in the vehicle to continue to drive to their residence. After few days the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have an oil change done on the vehicle but the failure persisted several times. The contact then received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 20V746000 (Engine) which took their vehicle to a local dealer to have the vehicle inspected due to the contact concerns that the failure on the vehicle was related to the recall. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated the vehicle was fine but they did not place the Knock sensor detection system software on the vehicle as part of the recall repair remedy. After a few weeks, the contact was driving back to the residence when they heard a knocking noise coming from their vehicle, the vehicle lost motive power, and stalled in front of their residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.
IT'S MAKING A LOT OF NOISE, WHEN I TURN MY CAR ON, WHEN I TURN IT OFF AND EVEN WHEN I'M DRIVING IT, IT THE SOUND IT'S COMING FROM THE ENGINE, I GOT MY CAR IN A DEALERSHIP 1MONTH AGO AND IT HAS 34,516 MILES
I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WHEN IT STARTED SMOKING AND THEN SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN HIGHWAY 195 IN TEXAS. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO EUROPE SERVICES IN KILLEEN, TX AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ENGINE IS BLOWN OUT. WE ARE UNABLE TO FIND A NEW ENGINE ANYWHERE. I LOOKED ONLINE AND SAW THAT THE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL OF MY CAR HAD A RECALL WITH PREMATURE ENGINE ISSUES.
MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND TURNED OUT IT'S THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. CAR IS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD, I SHOULD NOT BE HAVING ISSUES LIKE THIS YET
ATTEMPTED TO BACK OUT OF PARKING SPACE REVERSE NO LONGER WORKED. PUSHED VEHICLE OUT OF PARKING AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE FORWARD TO GET CAR HOME. WHEN IN DRIVE IT IS JERKY AS GEARS SHIFTS. IT IS TO SLOW TO SHIFT, SLOW TO ENGAGE GEARS, ONCE SHIFT IS COMPLETE HESITATES LOW TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD THEN JERKS FORWARD VERY AGGRESSIVELY.
THE METAL COMPONENTS OF THE AIR CONDITIONER/HEATER BLOWER SWITCH MELTS ON THE INSIDE CREATING A FIRE HAZARD.
TL* THE CONTACT 'S SON OWNED A 2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER. THE CONTACT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED ON 06/02/20. A MONTH LATER THE VEHICLE STALLED, WHILE THE CONTACT'S SON WAS DRIVING HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER (MAUS NISSAN OF CRYSTAL RIVER 937 S SUNCOAST BLVD, HOMOSASSA, FL 34448 (352) 592-6287). THEY FOUND THREE CODES THAT HAD TO DO WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, THE FUEL INJECTOR, AND THE COILS . THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME AND THE CONTACT'S SON ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE VEHICLE ON HIS OWN. HE APPLIED A FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER CLEANER AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE ISSUES OCCURRED AGAIN ON 09/03/20 WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SMOKE WHILE TRAVELLING AT 30 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND THE SON OPENED THE HOOD . SMOKE CAME OUT AND THEN FLAMES BURST FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS SOON ENGULFED AND THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS BURNED DOWN. THE FLAMES WERE PUT OUT BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. A POLICE REPORT AND A FIRE REPORT WERE FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES THAT REQUIRED TRANSPORT BY AN AMBULANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THE WRECKAGE WAS TOWED AWAY. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED YET. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
When I first bought my car it seemed to have some sort of transmission problem because it's a dual clutch I was told they do have problems sometimes when I'm trying to pick up speed it seems like it won't switch gears so it won't pick up speed which is extremely dangerous especially when I'm on the beltway or highway and I've already had Hyundai replace the first transmission because it was faulty now my second transmission is already acting up and it's only been 2 years
I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AND UPON STEPPING ON THE GAS, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. IT WAS MAKING A HUMMING SOUND SIMILAR TO IF IT WERE IN NEUTRAL. I CANNOT SEEM TO HAVE ANY POWER WHEN SHIFTING INTO SPORT MODE GETTING ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND DOES NOT ACCELERATE AT ALL. IT MAKES AN ODD NOISE. I FELT CAR HICCUP AT FIRST WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS COULD BE A DCT ISSUE AND COULD BE SAFETY ISSUE ALSO. CAR IS AT APPROX 77,000 MILES AT THIS TIME. SIMILAR ACCELERATION ISSUES REPORTED WITH THIS VEHICLE BY MYSELF PRIOR ALTHOUGH NOT THIS SEVERE AND SPORT MODE WAS WORKING FINE. *TR
IS BURNING TO MUCH OIL AND MOSTLY TIMES SMOKE MY CAR JUST HAVE 110,543 MILES...
BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSES TO BOTTOM AND DOES NOT STOP THE CAR WHILE TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. *TR
