As I am driving, the "service shifter" comes on and every gear on my vehicle lights up.
When stopping to turn the engine cut out while we were attempting to turn left. The car then alerted us to put the car into neutral to start ( Shift To Park Or Neutral Press Break + Select Gear.) We attempted to do as much in the middle of the intersection we were stuck in, posing a safety risk since we were in the middle of a left hand turn with on coming traffic. The lights, radio and dash were working at this point. We put the car into neutral and pushed it safely out of intersection and attempted to restart the engine, at this point the engine wouldn't turn over and there were no alerts. I called AAA for assistance. The service man who came out jumped my battery and got the car started. He informed me he gets many calls about Jeep Cherokees doing this and if a jump doesn't work he ends up towing the vehicle. I was able to drive the Jeep Cherokee back home since I didn't live too far away but as soon as I turned off my vehicle and tried to restart it the engine refused to turn over again and I got a check engine light. I attempted to start the Jeep Cherokee the next morning and was given a change oil soon message but nothing else, the engine wouldn't turn over, I called AAA for a tow to the mechanic. The next day the mechanic called me letting me know the car started right up for him and he changed my oil. He then ran diagnostics to see if anything came up. Nothing did, he also test drove it three times and started it six times to make sure it was running and told me that everything seemed OK but he read online that low oil levels will make Cherokee engines abruptly stop working. He advised me to check my oil before starting my car every time and report the issues here.
The gear shifter bezel and wiring all malfunctioned while I was driving. After reading up on the issues seems like this is a very common problem for jeeps. All lights on the shifter were lit up and I was unsure as to what gear I was in. This can be a major issue for any driver and should be recalled nationwide for fixing.
I bought a 2017 Jeep Cherokee latitude two weeks ago by the time I drove it home the service shifter light came on. I bought this car and it was certified free of defects this has happened a half a dozen times now I called the dealer and told them about it and I saw what the fix was online. The fixe is to put in a new shifter bezel and a new wiring harness. The dealer refuses to do this and the vehicle is certified what can I do?
Vehicle keeps having warning light for service shifter violently shift at time and anyone with this model is having the exact same problem
The 'service shifter' code keeps showing up. The car shifts and drives fine when it happens but it concerns me because I've read where a few people have had the car accelerate by themselves when this happens.
Vehicle would not shift into drive after backing out of driveway. Had to stop after rolling down hill and shift to park, then back to drive again to get the vehicle in gear. Service shifter light was repaired at the dealership 6 or 7 months ago. That problem has returned as well.
Service Shifter at approx. 27000 - all my gear lights red and the screen was locked to Service Shifter
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the transmission would stall and rev loudly upon the depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where a software update was performed on the vehicle; however, upon returning home from the dealer, the failure returned without warning. After multiple start-ups, the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
Service shifter notification/warning comes on randomly. When this warning is on, all of the lights on the gear shift light up (p,r,n,d). The engine feels like it is slipping, and the vehicle will drive slowly & is very loud. The gas pedal can be pressed completely to the floor and the car will not accelerate fast enough. The airbag and parking braking notification flash as well. Check engine light comes too.
The "Service shifter" notification continues to come on while driving. All shifter lamps light up which scares the driver not knowing what gear you are in. The driver has to pull over to turn off the vehicle and turn it back on to clear the notification and light. On busy Interstates and Highways, this puts my family at risk! I have found that there are many forums out there for jeeps 2014 to present that have had these issues for years without a clear fix. Some have stated they have spent $$$ without resolution. I just called a jeep dealership about my issue and they told me that they would have to charge me over $150 to confirm that I'm having this issue before addressing it! If this is a continued flaw or issue with the vehicle, why hasn't it be addressed and resolved before some is hurt or worse?
Ever few thousand miles, a ding will occur and a service light will come on along with a message stating, service shifter. P R D N L, light up on the shifter and will not turn of until a complete shutdown of vehicle.
Shifter lights up in red and it flashes a warning sign of "service shifter."
After the vehicle stalled I waited a minute and tried to start the vehicle again. The engine started and came up with the error "Service Shifter." The status lights for all the gears were red. The vehicle was parked on a flat parking lot and it was 55 degrees outside. The vehicle had previously run fine a few minutes before.
Drove approximately two miles and stopped the vehicle. Less than five minutes later start the car again. After three to five seconds the engine stalled. Vehicle was parked in a flat parking lot. It was about 55 degrees and clear this morning. I can no longer count the number of times this has happened on my hands.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. The contact stated while driving at 40 MPH and going up a hill, the vehicle inadvertently stalled. The contact stated he veered the side of the road and switched gears to park. The contact stated as soon as he exited the vehicle, the vehicle rolled down and ran over his right arm. The contact stated his wife who was sitting in the passenger seat promptly depressed the brake pedal with her hands and the vehicle stopped. The contact sustained a bruised wrist but did not seek medical assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the power transfer unit had failed and the failure was related to the recall for NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (POWER TRAIN). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they would follow up with the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 128,000.
I was driving like normal about 15 mph after just pulling out of the gas station onto the main road and have no issues with my car as of late and all of a sudden it just stopped. All the lights lite up on the shift, every light lite up on the dash saying everything needed to be serviced, I was unable to move or do anything with the car, not even turn it off and i was in the middle of the road! Luckily no one was behind me and I was still able to engage my hazards. After about 10 min's my car turned off on it's own. I sat for another 10 before finally being able to turn it back on and move it to the side of the road and eventually get it back to my house 2 miles away. Clearly this is a serious safety issue and is not ok, especially the fact that my car was bought brand new and is not even 5 years old!
Unknown
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH across a bridge, several unknown warning lights illuminated and the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact was assisted by a Police Officer to move the vehicle into a service station. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle was driven to a dealer where the warning lights again reappeared. The vehicle received unstated repairs, but remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Frequent service shifter light comes on but goes away after restarting car, transmission slipping
While on I95 SB getting ready to exit to 295W the pickup in front of me jammed on his brakes. I hit my brakes, realized I would not stop in time, I pressed harder on the brake and went into a skid and impacted the pickups right rear. Why did the anti skid stop working after applying more pressure? Dealer claims if the brakes were pumped it could have confused the system. ??????
Initially started with parking brake coming on and it took 15 mins of pushing and pulling the button/switch and turning car on and off. Then service air bags light came on. Next was saying passenger and driver seat belts not buckled even tho both were buckled. Then abs light came on. Mechanic determined it was OCR sensor located under center console. Apparently can only get part from jeep and its $400. Ordered and the Jeep wont recognize it so replacement had to be ordered. Now tire pressure light is on as well. Says front driver and rear passenger are low even tho all tires are at 34psi. The seat belt dinging is constant even tho belts are buckled. I have no cruise control. Over past 2 weeks have had the parking brake issue twice. The rest of issues are constant. So now driving around waiting on part with constant worry my parking brake will engage. Other issues are inconvenient and annoying but the brake and airbags are saftey issues. Also my odometer blinks constant too.
I went into a ditch hit two trees and a culvert before stopping and no airbags were deployed My 2017 jeep is a total loss lucky I didn’t receive any major injuries , a laceration to my face quick need to be closed and brusing and scrapes. Mentally I am not okay know it could have been with my children in the vehicle but that day it was just myself
Car stalls without warning or indicator lights and will not restart in a safe manner. There are dozens of reports concerning this situation online and it is a SERIOUS safety issue that has received no attention. There is apparently and “incomplete” notice from JEEP that has failed to reach all customers. This has now happened to me three times — 2 of which were in situations that created significant safety risk.
My service shifter will lock up and the gear shift will read that my car is in park, reverse, neutral, drive all at the same time. My dash will read “service shifter” however it has been doing that since I purchased it. The wheels on the car will jerk and lock up. Luckily, I am not going fast and can safely pull over. The car will sputter and act like it is struggling to go. I have had everything checked and all other recalls fixed. When I mentioned it to the service department, they said they could replace the part but it doesn’t guarantee that it will fix the issue. He gave me a quote to fix it and said the part is on back order or may be recalled soon. If it isn’t in the process it needs to be before it takes someone’s life. When I have checked social media it appears that multiple people are having the same issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the rear hatch failed to open as needed. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. On April 19, 2022 the vehicle was taken to the Landmark Dodge Chrysler Jeep at 6850 Mount Zion Blvd, Morrow GA 30260 for software recall update. The customer service rep was asked to check the locked rear liftgate that would not open. He stated it would be $195 just diagnose it. Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram customer service was called prior to the recall appointment and provided no corrective measure. I was advised to ask the dealer when I went in for the software recall update. I cannot access emergency roadside equipment without opening the rear liftgate which makes the vehicle unsafe. I have read several other similar complaints online.
I was driving and my car just stop on the freeway out of no where, no warning, no lights on absolutely nothing, it wouldn't start, after a couple minutes it started up again. later that day the same thing happened. Thank God an accident did not happen specially when it stop on the freeway.
When turning the key in the ignition the vehicle will sometimes not start. The engine does not try to turn over or engage.
After turning the key in the ignition the engine will start. After three to five seconds the engine stalls out.
Engine mounts broke and engine drop on excel dealership say mounts broke no warning light just heard a thump going about 25 mph then loud noise and rough engine. afraid to drive any further had a burn smell called tow truck sent to dealer.
Getting frequent SERVICE SHIFTER messages on dash board display. Repaired at a Jeep dealership previously, did not fix problem.
I started my vehicle and when I selected the drive gear all the red lights came on every gear. The service shifter warning came on the dash. I couldn’t move the vehicle for a week. The electronic parking brake start flashing on and off. I had this happen once before on vacation. I took it to the dealer in Vancouver Washington and they claim to have done a flash update, and took my brand new battery that was only three months old. Replaced it with the Mopar battery with less cold cranking amps, and charged me for it. Also, they refused to give me my battery back.
in august 2021 my got a service parking brake warning. took to dealership to make a appointment got more warning on the drive there for traction control, brake warning and check engine. got a appointment for later in week. asked was it OK to drive was told yes it was OK. got in car to leave and every 4 to 6 inches parking brake would lock up. tried a few times to move car but couldn't go any where keep locking brakes up. went inside told service advisor said i would have to leave it with them. called for a ride and while waiting for ride service advisor tried to move car and same thing happened to him. they replaced parking brake module. then in January 2022 left work and got service parking brake warning again then traction control also after a few miles. managed to make it home and called dealership and got a appointment for a few days later. when i tried to go to work next time car would not start battery was dead. had it towed to dealership and the brake module and terminal was corroded and green also battery was shorted out and would not hold a charge { fried the battery}. had to replace battery, control module and wiring harness this time. guess i was lucky it didn't catch fire this time or it happen while driving at highway speeds.
On the morning of 8/11/21, my 2017 Jeep Cherokee turned off on its own while I was still parked in my driveway. I took the key out and waited several seconds before turning the car on again. The car appeared to function correctly - no warning lights or messages. I went on to start my usual 30-minute commute to work. Approximately 15-minutes into that commute, a "service shifter" message appeared on the dashboard. The gear shift lights all turned red. I immediately pulled over and put the vehicle in park. The gear shift lights were all still red and I was only able to confirm that my vehicle was in park via the dashboard. This put my safety at risk as I did not know if my vehicle would remain in drive or if it would change to reverse as I attempted to safely pull over. Luckily, I was alone and my young child was not in the vehicle with me. After safely pulling over and parking, I took the key out and let the vehicle sit for nearly a minute. I turned the vehicle back on and everything appeared to be back to normal. I immediately called my local Jeep dealership to seek service advice and was told that this is a common issue. I asked if my vehicle was safe to drive now that the message was not appearing on the dash. I was told it was NOT safe to drive but to call them the next time the warning message appeared and they would TRY to schedule me for service. No service appointments were available for the next two weeks so there was nothing they could do to help me. This response is grossly irresponsible and putting vehicle owners at risk. A quick Google search will uncover that this is a known issue and Jeep has done nothing to issue a recall.
Service shift warning message. Same as the complaints already filed by other people. Happens too often. Dealership never fixes the issue but wants to charge even though it will continue to happen .
While driving the service shifter light pops on
Just bought the Jeep with 78,000 miles. Haven't made a payment and the service shifter message keeps coming up as well as service start stop system.
While driving the warning chimed with a “service shifter” message on the dashboard screen. All of the lights (P, D, N, R) were light in the shift indicator. Due to the warning message I was not able to see any other information on my dash. I wasn’t sure if I could even keep driving leading me to panic for fear that I couldn’t even put the car in park. After some research I have come to find this is a recurring problem with 2014-2019 Jeep Cherokees. Since this occurred on a weekend I intend on leaving the car parked for safety and calling a dealership Monday morning.
answers to the question and detailed description is below - the car completely shutdown while driving. - as the car shutdown while driving in the traffic, it was a major safety concern. - yes, service center told me it is just due to the battery - yes, by the authorized service center - no warning is appeared before the incident. I have a 2017 Cherokee purchased 2.5 years ago, 25.000 km and having regular service every 6 months. Just 100 km after i serviced the car, it shutdown while driving !!! The authorized service checked the car and the issue was just the battery. Generally when you have battery issue the car will not start without a jumper / booster but will not shutdown while driving at all. For Cherokee, it shutdown while driving !. Jeep service manager informed me that due to the used technology Cherokee can shutdown while driving when the battery finish (which is generally not the case in other cars). When i asked why the manufacturer didn't get any precaution for this, they mentioned that only Grand Cherokee has auxilary battery as a precaution and it is not obliged by the government and they just get some cases which is not enough to make a recall.
SERVICE SHIFTER - I RESEARCHED THE PROPBLEM AND APPRENTLY THERE IS A FAULTY ERROR WITH A LOT OF JEEP CHEROKEE IN REGARDS OF THIS MATTER PLEASE INVISTIGATE. THANK YOU
Service shifter warning. Car stalled twice. It has 45 k miles only. Won't start on first try.
My service shifter light came on and all the lights on the shifter console came on (PRND21). At first, I could turn the car off to reset it. This was dangerous because I had to pull over wherever I was. As time has gone on it pretty much stays on. My car has 33000 miles on it but is past the 3-year mark. I took it to the dealership and they told me the previous years had this problem but was recalled. It cost me $500.00 to replace a plastic bezel. I have saved all dealership repair paperwork. The dealership confirmed this is a very common problem.
On July 3, 2021 I stopped at STOP sign, then when I stepped on the gas car wasn't moving, when I looked at the gear shift I noticed all the lights are on, all P R N D AND "-" AND "+" NEXT TO THE GEAR (PICTURE ATTACHED). Then I stopped the engine and restarted the car to move on. On July 16, 2021 I took the car for oil change and showed the picture to the mechanic at the JEEP Service Center in Morgan Hill California (on Church Street in Morgan Hill, CA). The service guy said we know this problem it is a recall, he said it is wiring harness problem for the gear, he said they will fix it when they receive the part at no cost. Then, on July 26, 2021 I went back to see if they have received the part to fix the problem This time the service guy said it is not covered, JEEP will not pay for it. Well, if it is electrical wiring harness problem why should I pay for it. Such thing is a design/manufacturing problem, it is not wear and tear. Why should I pay for the problem created by manufacturers fault. Such electrical problem could well cause for an accident Please inform me what should I do? is it a recall? or is a new recall candidate? Sincerely, [XXX] email:[XXX] cell: [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
My car completely cut off while driving it on 2 separate occasions on 6/14 & 6/29. I was going 15-20 mph and slowing down for a stop light both times. The car just cut off without any warning. Once I put it in park I was able to start it back up without a problem. I took it to get serviced and the shop said there were multiple faulty computer codes so they reset the system. They advised me to call the dealership to see if there is a recall. I called a dealership and there is not a recall. They told me to bring it in so they could do a diagnostic test and check the fuel system. The earliest appointment at 2 dealerships I called is a month out and if I scheduled a drop-off appointment that could be done in about 7-10 days.
While driving the Service Shifter prompt came on and all the lights on the gear box turned red. The safety risk when this prompt came on is huge as you are driving and trying not to panic as you don't know if the car will stall or stop suddenly. MANY other people with Jeeps have experienced this problem. There should be a recall for this issue. This vehicle has under 25,000 miles. I went to the dealership and was informed the parts are not covered under warranty. It was confirmed the Bezel and Wire Harness will have to be replaced which the dealership did on 6/24/2021. The vehicle was only inspected by the dealership. No other warnings or dashboard messages prior to 6/23/2021.
I received an engine shutoff signal which disabled the car immediately without prior warning. It was due to the protection signal for low oil. The vehicle had a oil change 5,000 miles prior with synthetic oil. Over the course of 5,000 miles it "burned" the oil to the point of low level. Upon discovery, I noted many customer complaints (online) of this issue. There was no prior warning to the low oil level (no low pressure light or indicator.) I purchased this vehicle for my daughter and had she been driving on a busy highway, it would have disabled her car without any power to safely navigate this from the road, probably leading to a major accident. A newer vehicle with no mechanical issues does not "burn" oil excessively, this is a major engine issue. Some oil loss is understood and normal (in older cars), this newer vehicle used over 3 quarts of oil in the span of one oil change. Had I known about this issue, I would have been vigilant in monitoring this issue. Not knowing about this issue led to a very unsafe shutdown of the vehicle.
The vehicle didn’t have any warning lights or messages on dashboard. Someone ran a red light and hit my car while we were both going over 40mph and my airbags didn’t deploy but there’s did.. my car got towed as it wasn’t drivable anymore and was told the airbags where suppose to deploy but they didn’t.
My daughter was driving her car. It started "jerking". She pulled into a parking lot because she was worried. Her granddad went to pick it up and it drove fine for him. He said the parking brake was on- she did NOT put the parking brake on. I drove it down the street the next day- it jerked then also- and then stopped in the middle of the road. I was able to get it started back up and pull into my driveway. The next day my husband got it towed to a repair shop. It wouldn't work at all! The shop says it needs the transmission rebuilt or a new one. I feel my daughter's safety was at risk, because she is a newly turned 16 year old driver. If she had been driving it when it completely stopped it could have been bad. There were no warning lamps or messages beforehand- except that the parking brake was on- when it was not.
The Jeep is used as a flat tow vehicle with our 2004 Monaco RV. On June 8, we left Ducket Mill Campground in Dawsonville GA to return home to Cincinnati OH. The vehicle was attached to the RV with the Blue Ox Flat Tow system. The four tires on the Jeep were checked and were all rolling. We followed the instructions in the manual, which were also the instructions given to us by the RV dealer who did the installation. One hour and a half after we left, the Jeep started smoking. A truck driver who passed our vehicle pulled off the side of the road yelled that the parking brake was on and needed to be turned off. Upon checking, there were two flat, chewed up tires. We were towed to a tire dealer in Ellijay GA to have repaired. We have one of the tires. That night, we found a Jeep salesman from 2017 on YouTube explaining the parking brake had to be disengaged to make sure there were no problems in flat towing. This was the first we had heard of this problem. We checked in the manual, and the only mention was that the electronic parking brake can be disengaged. No other warning. When we got home, we had the Jeep into the dealer. They could find nothing wrong with the parking brake system. They DROVE the car, but dd not flat tow it. The person at the tire store showed us how the tire was worn and torn up in a small area, probably caused by the parking brake engaging. Since we were not in the car and the car worked fine for an hour and 1/2 (not to mention the entire way down from Cincinnati to Dawsonville), we believe the parking brake engaged by itself as we drove through the mountains.
Randomly weekly multiple times the car screen says service shifter across dash screen. Which causes most of the gauges to be hidden and a huge distraction. The car will not stop saying this message until you pull over and shut it off. After restarting the car is back to normal. I contacted local dealer about this issue multiple times and they said they know of the issue happening to this model but there is no fix for it at this time.
