NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Jeep Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
We first noticed the "svc fwd'' warning light. Intermittently at first and going off after driving a mile or so. We were first told it was probably a wiring problem, possibly a worn and exposed connector or a bad fuse but neither was found. Only after the ''svc fwd'' light started to remain on, did we have a diagnostic run and then were told the PTU had gone out and that this is a known common problem with Jeep Cherokee's 2014 - 2017.In fact, so bad a problem, it warranted a recall. Thousands of jeeps are having this problem but the recall is VIN specific. Ours is a 2017 and is NOT on the recall although it is now dangerous to drive. We are essentially paying for a vehicle we cannot drive and have been waiting over 5 weeks now for a replacement PTU. Even so, some of the replacement PTU's are ,themselves being recalled for being faulty. Our warranty has run out. The mileage is now just over 60,000 and now we feel we are being pushed to cover the cost even though this is a known faulty part.
Power Transfer Unit falls off because of acknowledged manufactured defect: 1.While it seems extremely unlikely for all bolts of the power transfer unit to eject and/or shear, it is worth noting that increased stress & strain upon an un-torqued bolt could lead to such a condition. Review of the Jeep Cherokee Forum resulted in discovery of identical incidents associated with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, specifically in the affected model range of Safety Recall W47. 3.Safety Recall W47 States: “The PTU on about 67,240 of the above vehicles may have been built to allow relative movement between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft. This condition may result in the teeth of the input splines wearing off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, torque cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission, which will result in a loss of motive power while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the PARK function while stationary. A loss of motive power or PARK function can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside the vehicle. 4.The repair completed via Safety Recall W47 was: “Reprogram the affected vehicles with software for the Drive Train Control Module (DTCM) and the Electric Park Brake (EPB) that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive function and prevent rolling in the PARK selection by activating the electric park brake if a failed input spline occurs” 5.Safety Recall W47 did not correct the root cause of the problem, which was a manufactured defect creating relative movement between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft. Improper tolerance of high velocity rotational components results in high vibrations that propagate through ancillary equipment. Damage and ware caused by high vibrations is a scientifically plausible explanation for sheared bolts.
The shifter turns all red lights and service shifter appears in the warnings. There was a recall for this on certain vin #s for the same make and model but Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the wider problem effecting others. They advise you to pay out of pocket and I can’t afford that. This is clearly an issue that is wide spread and the danger is unknown what can happen but I don’t feel safe driving my [XXX] in a vehicle with all these warning lights. The issue started apparently 2 years ago but hadn’t been addressed by my wife because she was out of work and not driving it much. We need both our vehicles safe and Chrysler needs to fix the issues that their manufacturers caused. There are so many articles and complaints about this same issue and Chrysler refusing to fix it. Please help us ensure the safety of our family until we can afford another car. Our mechanic was able to replicate the issue and now it’s just constantly on. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
On numerous occasions the car engine just shuts off or loses power. This happens consistently. The car has been taken to the dealership where it was purchased and was told "could not duplicate problem". This just happened again yesterday on a main street posted at 45 mph, where engine just shut off. Making left turns has become a gamble as power response is not there. This is a dangerous situation.
The service light was coming on and off. It would reset on startup but would come on after driven for a few miles. I experienced the car kicking into gear when I went from park to drive. The first time I brought it in, they said that they didn't see anything and cleared the codes and I drove it off the lot not even 1/2 mile and the light came back on and as I was leaving the lot, I noted that the car abruptly took off when I put my foot lightly on the gas pedal. When I questioned that there was a recall a few years ago, the dealership said that this car had no recalls related to my problem. A few months after I got the car repaired, there was a recall for the 2017 Cherokee for the PTU but not for my VIN #. This car was manufactured Sept 2016 and is a 2017 Jeep Cherokee High Altitude.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The service parking brake, service transmission, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The police arrived on the scene to guide the traffic around the stopped vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer and diagnosed with a power transfer unit failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,000.
Indicator lights are shown on dash include gas cap, seat belt and engine. All gear lights display red when driving and states to service shifter. Dash displays service engine soon. Service air bag system. Seat belt will constantly ding even though it is buckled and will not stop dinging. Replaced gas cap, but indicator light continues to display on dash. Strongly believe there are electrical issues causing theses defects. Took to local dealership and they performed an update, but the indicator lights started to display again the following day, along with the constant dinging from the vehicle not being able to sensor the seat belt being buckled. This has been happening for over a year now and no one seems to be acknowledging there is an extreme safety concern with this vehicle. Strongly believe it is due to the fact of being at fault and not wanting to correct the defects without compensation. Plus there is an abnormal sound when accelerating since these issues began and are continuous. If you’re an attorney reading this, please find me through my vin #. I’m tired of dealing with these issues and willing to take legal action to resolve these issues. Will never buy a Jeep again. Thanks.
Power Transfer Unit failure at 73531 miles. Repaired at the dealership for a cost of $3300. Manufacturer has offered an extended warranty to cover PTU failures on SOME vehicles in my year range for failure of this part, but mine was specifically EXCLUDED by the manufacturer. In spite of their denial that I received a defective PTU, nonetheless mine failed. Service 4WD warning message appeared, and I took it the dealer for repairs which they completed.
The incident happened in a parking lot. Backing out of the parking space, there was a delivery truck parked right behind me. Backing out of my parking space, I hit the bumper of the truck (no damage to the truck). As I pulled back into my parking space the vehicle accelerated very rapidly in a distance of approx. 25 feet; the acceleration seemed "Hell cat" like. Slamming my foot on the brake did not help. The vehicle then hit a brick retaining wall deploying multiple air bags and causing enough vehicle damage that the insurance company declared it totaled. It is amazing that the vehicle hit the brick wall with enough intensity to deploy the air bags and cause considerable front end damage after traveling such a short distance (approx 25 ft). The vehicle is in the insurance company's possession. As such, I do not have access to the vehicle. Had the brick wall not been there, the vehicle could have hit other vehicles or pedestrians and I was lucky to only have minor bruises and abrasions. There was no warning what so ever that this was about to happen.
Air bag light came on at 36,500 miles Went off and on several times then stayed on reported to chrysler but out of warranty 66,000 miles 4wheel drive light come on gear shift light come on and off several times took to dealer service department they said PTU UNIT needs replacement 3,000 dollars Called chrysler no help out of warranty
On our 2017 Jeep Cherokee all the red lights illuminate on the shifter console making it impossibe to know what gear you are in. The warning 'Service Shifter' appears on the dash/instrument panel. Mechanics have told us that this has become a common issue with this model and other Jeeps and can lead to a shut down of the vehicle and/or further issues with the drivetrain or electronics. It would appear from all the related issues being voiced on the internet and in Jeep forums that it involves defective parts installed at the time of manufacture. We were required to pay $500.00 to replace associated parts by the dealership as our warrranty had just expired. Given the extent of this issue, a recall should be demanded of the company and reimbursment for the cost of repairs.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the “Service 4WD” message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the failure was caused by a faulty Power Transfer Unit (PTU). The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 96,252.
Service shifter indicator comes on and all lights on shifter light up
I purchased 2017 Jeep Cherokee from Jim Riehls Friendly dealership 2/2022. On 5/2023, the parking brake engaged while I was pulling out of my driveway and I blocked on coming traffic in my neighborhood. Called a tow truck and took to my mechanic (Kay's Auto Shop). They recommended taking to Jeep dealership as needed "a code check for electronic park brake failure". Jeep was able to drive to dealership. Dealership evaluated Jeep and asked if I had "driven into a lake"? There was water under the rear mat in spare tire area from unknown leak. I have never seen or heard a leak from sunroof or rear hatch. Dealership offered to fix problem but would be charging me to find leak. Representative said up to $4,000 and not guaranteed. I drove Jeep home. When I went to drive to doctor's appt., parking brake was engaged again. I am a 58 y/o new widow and I don't trust this vehicle. I believe it to be unsafe and unreliable. I have documentation and pictures for your review. Thank you for your careful consideration.
Hello, My vehicle is at 77,000 miles and has been intermittently flashing the Service AWD light on the dash. The dealer ran diagnostics and said it needs a new PTU at the cost of about $3000. I see there are open recalls on other 2017 Jeep Cherokees, but not my specific VIN. I have never had a PTU go bad on our prior Jeeps, even ones that were more than twice this mileage. This seems like a part defect...everything else on the vehicle is still in good condition. Please let me know if there is an open investigation on this vehicle type.
My issue is with the PTU on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee. I had barely over 60,000 miles (around 62,000 when this issue happened) and the "SVC 4WD" light was illuminated on my dash board. After doing some research, I saw that many Cherokees, within my same year era, were recalled for this same issue. The issue being that the vehicle could lose all power while being driven and also a failure to engage while the vehicle is placed into park, could mean my vehicle rolling out of park and hitting someone or crashing. This issue is a very known issue with the years 14-17, yet my 2017 doesn't fall under the recall. This is a huge liability and the dealership I went to, did not offer any type of "good will" repair on a situation that I feel really calls for it, especially being only 2,000 over my powertrain warranty. I'm reporting this issue because if other 2017 Jeep Cherokee had this issue prematurely, what separates my vehicle from that, why is my safety placed into jeopardy? I wish Jeep would do the right thing and make sure that the vehicles exhibiting the same issues of the recalled VINS would also get that recall repair, because it's literally the same issue...and it's a part that is faulty and breaking down prematurely. This is my first Jeep I've purchased brand new, I've had two others in my driving career. I thought that by purchasing new, that my vehicle could be backed by Jeep if any known issues occurred and I'd love someone to explain why my 2017 Jeep doesn't fit the criteria to have a dangerous, prematurely faulty part, replaced..when others in the same situation have had it done. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Vehicle started rapidly accelerating and was unable to turn off cruise control. Dash lights flashed on and off. Had to put the car in neutral and slow to a stop.
When I started my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited this morning, a "service shifter" message appeared on my instrument panel. All the lights that indicate park, reverse, neutral, and drive were illuminated red - all at one time. I turned the car off and restarted it. The message was no longer indicated. However, I scheduled the car for service with my dealer. I wanted to add my voice to the others that have experienced this same issue. The car is not currently under a recall for this issue. But it seems to be a prevalent one for this year and model Jeep.
I was driving down the road and several lights in the dash popped on. The check engine light and a few others that I was not familiar with. Everything started blinking and it said "service shifter" and "service airbag system ". I put it in park and tried to put it back in drive and it would not go into drive and started rolling backwards. I had to push it into a parking lot and have it towed.
My vehicle will not move at a stop light and the hand brake will come on by itself. Also the start/stop warning light continues to come on after driving for several miles.
I was driving on route I79 Southbound. I had just entered I79 southbound via exit 152. I was accelerating to the speed limit of 70mph. There were no vehicles or objects within 1/4 mile of my location. At approximately 68Mph, the tire front passenger side blew out without cause or reason. As I maneuvered the vehicle over to the shoulder, the rear passenger tire blew out. Upon having the vehicle towed to the repair shop at my expense, I saw that the rim on the front passenger tire was completely destroyed. I believe this was was caused by a defect in the front passenger rim. It appears there was something wrong with the rim.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle was started, and the service shifter warning light illuminated. The contact stated while reversing, several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle rolled forward. The contact turned the vehicle off and shifted the gear shifter into park. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The contact was informed that the parts for the repair were unavailable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. In addition, the contact stated that in 2022, when the failure initially started, the dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was informed that there were no recalls associated with the VIN. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing and to pay for the diagnostic test out of pocket. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
The service shifter message came on the screen and all the lights on the shifter lit up. The engine would jerk or completely shut off while driving. Speed increased going downhill in cruise control. I brought it in 6 months ago and they said it was almost out of oil and very dirty. So they filled it without changing the filter. The dealer claimed to have updated the computer. Now the service shifter message is coming on again and all the lights come on next to the shifter. They are fixing that today - charging me for replacing the shifter and it taking only 1/2 hour. I think the charge is $500 - $600. They said it would not be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty included when purchasing the vehicle at 88,000 miles less than 1 year ago.
The engine consumes a large amount of oil. I regularly have to add 1qt/ 800-100 miles. The engine will just stall if the oil level gets too low without any warning. In Alaska this poses an extreme hazard, especially in the winter.
My 2017 Jeep Cherokee started flashing the light service 4Wd the vehicles has always been maintained and this just started about 6 monrhs ago this jeep has had recalls in the past. But now as of today these warnings began after getting back into my jeep. TO COMPLETE NEUTRAL SHIFT PUT TRANS IN NEUTRAL. THAN 4WD NEUTRAL WARNING VEHICLE MAY MOVE EVEN IN PARK and I feel this is putting my life and others in danger
The car will shut off unexpectedly while driving. This is extremely dangerous. This is the 6th time in the last 3 years that this has happened.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while stopped at a stop sign or at a traffic light, the vehicle stalled. The failure had occurred on several occasions. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the main electrical fuse needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the main electrical fuse needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer again and it was determined that the main electrical fuse needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Hello, what I am trying to find out is if the NHTSA has ever got notification or investigated what folks call the Jeep Death Wobble. We just got the Jeep and are looking to flat tow the vehicle behind our Motorhome and folks tell us that Jeep issued a Service Bulletin regarding the death wobble and would require modifications to the electrical system to resolve the problem. Is this an issue that your organization would have investigated and made Jeep/Mopar aware of the Death Wobble Issue. My second question Is that your web site shows that you have over 800 complaints regarding this vehicle and was wondering how I can read some of them. Thanks very much We have not experienced this issue yet but trying to find out more info about the Jeep Death Wobble before we proceed with any repairs etc regarding this issue.
THIS VEHICLE HAS INTERMITTENT NO ACCELERATION FROM A STOP GOING INTO TRAFFIC AND WILL FINALLY RESPOND BREAKING THE TIRES LOOSE AND WILL ACCELERATE SO FAST THAT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU IS IN DANGER. I am a retired shop owner and tech and this is a very dangerous situation not easily duplicated for diagnostic purposes but in following Jeep Forums hAS DEFINITELY been a problem for many and I am sure there are many of these issues and vehicles still on the road. There should definitely be a recall issued to correct this situation.
Service shifter light is on but nothing can be found wrong with the car.
The service shifter light came on and the mechanics cannot find any logical reason why but it does not allow me to see what speed I am going when it is on.
Engine and car was not warming up with remote start. Finally check engine light comes on. Code P0128 thermostat. Repaired 1/28/2021 @ 85762 miles. All antifreeze replaced. $600+ repair. 2/1/2022 same observed failure of engine to warm up during remote starts. 2/6/2022 check engine light comes on with code P0128. Again, thermostat failure. Miles 111,000. This appears to be a repetitive symptom of cherokees 2014+ with 2.4L engines. This can cause serious engine damage.
The front struts and links have had to be replaced at 41,000 miles on a vehicle purported to have upgraded off-road build.
the electronic emergency brake engaged on its own. The car would not move and there was nothing I could do to get it out of park.
Vehicle shifter service light keeps coming on causing vehicle to light up all of its shifter lights at the same time keeping it from engaging into gear any gear had to turn off and on for it to work
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, he noticed that the temperature gauge was increasing and then it decreased. An engine heater warning was displayed as the engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop as all motive power was lost. The vehicle rolled to a stop crashing into debris on the side of the roadway. The contact stated that there was no body damage to the vehicle. The contact stated that AAA was contacted and stated that they would contact the police however, the police did not show up. The vehicle was towed by AAA to the contact's residence. The contact stated that the AAA driver informed him of a recall that was related to the failure and the vehicle's PTU. The contact stated that the dealer was contacted to verify if the vehicle was included in a recall. The dealer informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure has not been diagnosed or repaired. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Heater hose broke while on the freeway causing all of the antifreeze to leak out and car to overheat with no warnings signs. Car started shaking and I pulled over and it shut off. Turns out the heater hose is made with two tubes connected toghether and the hose broke where the connect.
I keep getting a “service shifter” message on my dash board and ask the great lights light up. When taken to get inspected or fixed, the message disappears and nothing can be done. When they check the car , no error codes pop up. But I keep getting this message and I’m not the only one.
Service shifter message. Shifter lites turn all red. Screen on dash won't change when message is on.
Gear shifter errors and brings up "Service Shifter." Vehicle has to be completely shut off to clear error. Whewn the notificaion appears vehicle chages gears roughly and doesnt initiate park. Error has happend on highways, city street, or whenever the vehicle is placed into drive. It had only happend a couple times until receintly where its becomming more frequent, every other day as of now.. Dealer was unable to replicate the error, its to sporadic, and a OBDII reader shows nothing. I have pictures from a couple of the most recent times
While driving at approximately 50 mph, the vehicles steering wheel locked, all lights on the dash came on and the car shut completely off. My daughter was able to slowly pump the breaks to stop because there was no traffic but had there been she could have been in a serious accident since the car completely shut down. This is a huge safety concern.
When I turned the car off, the lights on the dashboard and ceiling stayed longer than the appropriate time. I went back to check and the dashboard went off but the ceiling stayed on. Next both lights were off but the dashboard came back on when I shut the door. It also randomly messages that the license plate light is out but works fine.
For about two years we have been getting a "Service Shifter" display code on the dash, red lights on all the gear indicators by the shift knob, and the service chime sound when the code comes on. At first the issue happened occasionally, and now it is on almost constantly. We have no dashboard visibility when the code is displayed and are concerned that the problem is worsening. We will be bringing it to a local Jeep dealership to run diagnostics, but are dubious of what can be done to actually fix the issue after following many Jeep forums online. So we are raising our concerns here. The FCA Service Bulletin seems to correctly identify the problem: Number: 08-103-18 Group: 08 - Electrical Date: 08/09/2018 Subject: Service Shifter Message We have observed that this is a common problem with Jeep products, especially with 2017 Jeep Cherokees. It should likely result in a recall.
I financed a brand new 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk from a local dealership in July of 2017 that I now own due to a recent payoff in November of 2024. However, for the past 3 years, I’ve been getting a ‘Service Shifter’ message appearing with all P-R-N-D gear shift lights illuminated.
SERVICE SHIFTER, SERVICE 4WD, SHIFTER GETS PUT INTO GEAR IN ANY WEATHER UNDER 32 DEGREES F AND THE SHIFTER WILL NOT SHIFT INTO A PARTICULAR GEAR. ALL LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER WILL LIGHT UP. THE CAR WILL FREE REV. IF YOU LEAVE THE CAR RUNNING FOR 15 TO 30 MINUTES. THE ENGINE/TRANS/SERVOS WARM UP, AND THE CAR IS NOW ABLE TO SHIFT INTO GEAR. THIS ISSUE ONLY HAPPENS IN COLD WEATHER. WE HAVE LOST ALL CONVIDENCE IN DRIVING OUR CAR IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. WE'VE BROUGHT THE CAR TO JEEP, THEY REPLACED PARTS, REPLACED SHIFTER WIRING, ITS BEEN BACK TO JEEP DEALER 3 TIMES. THEY CANNOT FIX THE ISSUE. THERE SHOULD BE A ELECTRICAL SHIFTER OR WIRING HARNESS RECALL OF SOME KIND.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle inadvertently stalled without warning. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 45-50 MPH, the vehicle started to decelerate and then shut off completely. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the check engine warning light and service shifter warning light was illuminated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
While driving down the street, my vehicle has started to automatically shift into neutral and the warning message, "must brake before shifting into gear" appears on my dash. I have to coast over to the side of the road in neutral, shift into park and turn my vehicle off before trying to restart. This has happened 4 or 5 times while I am actually driving down the road. When it is appearing to drive "normal" it has a warning message of "gear shift error" on the dash. So I paid a local mechanic to replace the entire gear shift component and my vehicle switched into neutral while I was driving again the next day. I am so nervous I will get into a wreck from this continuing to happen while driving my toddler around. I have not driven it since this happened right after picking it up from the shop. I then found a website listing a recall for my same year and make/model describing exactly what is currently happening with my vehicle. I called a local Jeep dealership about the recall and they told me since there was not a recall attached to my VIN number, they could not honor the recall. I am reporting this to you now to try and get my vehicle acknowledged and repaired under the recall. Here is the website where I found the recall: https://www.carscoops.com/2020/06/2014-2017-jeep-cherokee-recalled-over-serious-transmission-issues/
Message came up saying Service Shifter and all lights on shifter turned red. Happened several times. Made appointment to have it checked. Was told I needed new shifter and the part would take 7 to 10 days (took 10) and that I should not drive it as it could lock up in gear. After researching on line it appears this is a problem for many people and does not appear to be a recall item with so many complaints. It has been repaired costing nearly $1,000. I think this should be reviewed with so many others having the same problem.
Car needs a whole new PTU Input Spline system. It has worn down. Is a known issue in other sales models.
