I HAVE HAD MY CAR ALMOST THREE YEARS, I HAVE 31,800 MILES ON IT. I'M GETTING "SERVICE SHIFTER" ERROR PERIODICALLY WHEN STARTING MY CAR. I TURN MY CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT GOES OFF. IT'S HAPPENED THREE TIMES IN THE PAST 7 DAYS. I'VE READ A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. JEEP SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS. THIS HAPPENED IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN TURNING ON MY CAR. I READ THAT SOMEONE'S MECHANIC SAID IT CAN LEAVE YOU STRANDED AND IS DANGEROUS IF IT COMES ON WHILE DRIVING AS YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK. THIS HA HAPPENED TO ME 3 TIMES OVER THE PAST 7 DAYS.
SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON. NEED TO TURN OFF VEHICLE AND RESTART. IF LIGHT IS ON AND VEHICLE RUNNING THE SHIFTING IS HARD AND STEERING IS LOOSE
SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CONSTANTLY COMES ON. 2017 CHEROKEE HAS BEEN HAPENNING SINCE 20,000 - NOW HAVE 30,000 . HAVE SEEN AND HEARD HORROR STORIES. DEALER SAYS NO ISSUES. WANTS TO CHARGE FOR REPAIRS.
SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT, ALL GEARS LIGHT UP RED.
SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON AND ALL GEARS LIGHT UP. CAR MAKES LOUD CLUNK NOISE WHEN SHIFTING GEARS AND HAS A HARD TIME SWITCHING GEARS. WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT ELECTRONIC SHIFTER BEZEL AND PIGTAIL NEED TO BE REPLACED. KNOWN PROBLEM OF THE JEEP CHEROKEE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER THE DRIVER MADE A RIGHT TURN INTO A SHOPPING CENTER, THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE VEHICLE ABRUPTLY STALLED. THE DRIVER WAS ASSISTED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE ROADWAY. THE DRIVER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO HOME HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE STALLED FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO BERGERON AUTOMOTIVE DEALER (3525 VETERANS MEMORIAL BOULEVARD, METAIRIE, LA 70002, (504-888-2132). THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE ENGINE. THE DEALER ADDED ENGINE OIL TO THE ENGINE, AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO BRING THE VEHICLE BACK FOR INSPECTION EVERY THOUSAND MILES TO HAVE THE ENGINE OIL CHECKED AND A NEW OIL FILTER INSTALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,612.
'SERVICE SHIFTER' WORDS APPEARED ON SCREEN AND ALL OF THE RED LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER APPEARED. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET.
ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AS I'M DRIVING MY 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE THE SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING CAME UP ON THE DISPLAY SCREEN THE FRONT TIRES LOCK UP AND WON'T MOVE I'VE HAD IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TWO DIFFERENT TIMES AND THEY TELL ME NOTHINGS WRONG WITH IT AND TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO KEEP DRIVING IT UNTIL THEY COULD RE-CREATE THE INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES
WHEN DRIVING THE CAR DASH WILL POP UP AND SAY 'SHIFTER SERVICE REQUIRED'. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER LIGHT UP.
WHILE DRIVING THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHTER APPEARS ON DASH AND SHIFTER POSITION LIGHTS ALL LIGHT RANDOMLY AND HAS BEEN BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. THEY TURN OFF ONCE I STOP, TURN THE CAR OFF, AND RESTART THE CAR. I HAVE READ MODELS PREVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS ISSUE BUT NOT 2017 WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUES. ALSO I'VE HAD TO CHANGE MY SPARK PLUGS AT ABOUT EVERY 50,000 MILES. I REPLACED THEM ONCE ALREADY AND ONCE AGAIN I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND AT TIMES THE CAR IS SHAKING FROM THE MISFIRING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON AT A TIMES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES AND THE CAR IS SHAKING THE POWER AND ACCELERATION ARE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED WHEN THE SPARK PLUGS ARE ACTIVELY MISFIRING. THIS ONLY OCCURS WITH ACCELERATING AND PRESSING ON GAS PEDAL AND HAPPENS CONSTANTLY WHILE DRIVING. I'VE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE SPARK PLUGS THIS OFTEN THEY USUALLY LAST ATLEAST 100,000 MILES. THERE IS A PROBLEM WHEN THEY BARELY LAST FOR HALF THAT AND REQUIRE REPLACEMENT ATLEAST 2 TIMES BEFORE THEY SHOULD GO BAD. THESE SEEM TO BE A COMMON ISSUE BUT WHEN YOU ASK THE DEALER THEY ACT CLUELESS AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. THESE ARE COSTLY PROBLEMS THAT SHOULD NOT BE OCCURRING OR OCCURRING THIS FREQUENTLY. PLEASE INVESTIGATE.
WAS ON THE WAY OUT OF TOWN FOR THE WEEKEND DRIVING AT 65MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHTS UP ON MY CONSOLE AND ALL LIGHTS (GEARS) ON THE ACTUAL SHIFTER CONSOLE LIGHT UP AS WELL. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PLACED IN PARK, STILL ALL LIGHTS REMAINED ON LEAVING ME PUZZLED. I PROCEEDED ON CAUTIOUSLY AWARE OFF WHAT WAS OCCURRING, AFTER REACHING MY DESTINATION TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF.. FINDING THAT RESTARTING THE VEHICLE EVERYTHING WAS BACK TO NORMAL. UNFORTUNATELY IT KEEPS REPEATING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER FOR AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES NOW. BESIDES THE ONGOING PROBLEM IT ALSO IS UNSAFE AS IT ACTUALLY STARTLES YOU WHEN IN TRAFFIC WHEN IT DINGS AND EVERYTHING LIGHTS UP ! APPARENTLY ITS A KNOW PROBLEM WITH JEEP WITH MULTIPLE OTHERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. WHY IS THERE NO RECALL FOR A PERMANENT FIX TO THIS UN SAFE ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE IS SEVERELY INJURED OR A LIFE IS LOST.....
I WAS DRIVING MY 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE TRAIL HAWK TODAY WHEN THE 'SERVICE SHIFTER' LIGHT CAME ON. I'VE HEARD THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH A LOT OF OTHER 2017 JEEP CHEROKEES
WELL OVER A YEAR AGO THE "SERVICE SHIFTER" MESSAGE BEGAN COMING ON AND OFF APPEARING ON MY JEEP DASHBOARD. I CALLED MY DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT SERVICED. I WAS TOLD THAT IF THE LIGHT WAS NOT ON THERE WASN'T ANYTHING THEY COULD DO. AFTER SOME TIME PAST IT STOPPED COMING ON. APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS AGO IT STARTED COMING ON AND OFF AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A "KNOWN ISSUE" AND TO BRING IT IN. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT BUT A WEEK BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT MY JEEP WOULDN'T START. THE SHITFTER WOULD NOT MOVE AT ALL. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WAS STRUGGLING TO BE ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO GET THE JEEP OUT FO THE GARAGE. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER WHO HAD MY CAR FOR 2 FULL DAYS THAT THE BATTERY WAS MESSED UP AND THERE WAS LOST COMMUNICATION. I WAS TOLD THEY ALSO SAW PREVIOUS MESSAGES REGARDING THE SHIFTER. THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY AND ALL THE CODES WERE CLEARED. THEY APPARENTLY TEST DROVE THE CAR AND COULD NOT GET THE SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE TO COME BACK UP. I WAS TOLD I COULD REPLACE THE BEZEL AND HARNESS PARTS OF THE SHIFTER BUT I HAD TO PAY FOR IT BECAUSE I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE PARTS HAD BEEN RECONFIGURED. IF THEY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM AND RECONFIGURED THE PARTS WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL? WHY DIDN'T THEY REPLACE THIS WHEN I CALLED THEM THE FIRST TIME AND WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY? I'VE RESEARCHED THIS ONLINE AND HAVE SEEN A LOT OF INDIVIDUALS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. ALSO, WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP MY JEEP THE FIRST THING THAT HAPPENED WAS A LOW TIRE MESSAGE. I PUT NEW TIRES ON THE JEEP ONE MONTH AGO. I CROSSED THE STREET TO GAS STATION TO AIR PUMP AND ALL TIRES WERE FINE. I WENT BACK TO DEALER AND THEY CHECKED THEM. ALL WERE FINE. I WAS TOLD THEY HAD NO IDEA WHY LIGHT WAS ON AND I WOULD HAVE TO MAKE ANOTHER APPT. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS! I AM BEYOND FRUSTRATED!!!!!
I WAS SIMPLY DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT APROX 30 MPH. I HEARD A DING LOOKED AT MY DASH AND SERVICE SHIFTER SOON NOTICE WAS ON MY DASH. LOOKED DOWN AT GEAR SHIFT ALL LIGHTS WHERE RED P R N D +.. I PULLED OVER LEFT THE VEHICLE RUNNING AND SHIFTED IT TO PARK. ALL LIGHTS AND THE SERVICE SHIFTER SOON NOTICE REMAINED. I TURNED OFF VEHICLE FOR 5-10 MINUTES. STARTED AGAIN AND WARNING MESSAGE WAS GONE. LIGHTS ON GEAR SHIFT RETURNED TO NORMAL ONLY LIGHTING UP THE GEAR THE VEHCLE WAS ACTUALLY IN. THERE WAS NO WARNING PRIOR TO THIS OCCURRENCE. VEHICLE MADE NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS, NO SHIFTING FUNNY, NO ISSUES GOING INTO GEAR. NOTHING COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BLUE.
I HAVE ERROR MESSAGES THAT DISPLAY SAYING SERVICE GEAR SHIFTER NOW AND 4 WHEEL DRIVE UNAVILABLE. THIS HAPPENS WITHOUT CASE GENERALLY WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN THE SERVICE GEAR SHIFTER LIGHTS COME ON ALL THE LIGHTS ON MY GEAR SHIFTER LIGHT UP AS WELL. THIS ONLY HAPPENS ABOUT 1X A MONTH. I TOOK IT TO THE SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD I THINK I KNWO WHAT COULD BE CASING IT BUT WE COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND IF WE CANNOT GET THE CODE WE CANNOT FIX IT. UNFORTUNITLY WE WILL EITHER HAVE TO HAVE IT BROUGHT IN WHILE ITS DOING IT OR IT MAY HAVE TO COMPLETELY BREAK BEFORE WE CAN FIX IT. THERE IS A RECALL FOR OTEHR JEEPS SAME MAKE AND MODEL BUT NOT MY VIN. I ASKED IF THIS WAS UNSAFE FOR ME AND MY TWO YOUNG DAUGHTR AND WAS TOLD I DONT THINK SO. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH SINCE AND FOUND PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE THAT HAVE ALMOST DIED. I HAVE RECORDS SHOWING THEY WERE ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN IT OCCURED AND THERE JEEP LOCKED UP CASUING THEM TO BE HIT BY A SIMI TRUCK. THE JEEP WAS MANGLED. I HAVE INCLUDED PICTURES THE 1ST 4 OUR NOT MINE THE LAST IS AND I HAVE ONE OF ALL THE LIGHTS IN ON MY GEAR SHIFTER AS WELL BUT IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ANOTHER PICTURE.
WHEN I TURN ON MY CAR, I RECEIVE THE MESSAGE "SERVICE SHIFTER" AND ALL LIGHTS TURN RED ON THE GEARS. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 29,860 MILES AND AM TOLD IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

ADDITIONALLY, THERE WAS WATER ENTERING THE VEHICLE AT THE WHEEL HUB LINER AT THE BOLT HEAD. THE CARPET WAS WET FROM WATER INTRUSION INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THE RAIN WATER CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TWO INDEPENDENT MECHANICS WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SHIFTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE CONTACT STATED THE FAILURE WAS LIKE SERVICE BULLETIN: 2301516 A. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT APPEAR RANDOMLY WHEN DRIVING FROM 10-60 MPH, AND GOES AWAY WHEN TURNING OFF CAR. HAS RETURNED EVERY 3 DAYS FOR ONE WEEK. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON FOR ENTIRE WEEK. REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCK DOES NOT RESPOND TO LOCK/UNLOCK BUTTON PRESS. REVERSE CAMERA DOES NOT DISPLAY CLEAR IMAGE.

WHILE DRIVING THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHTS COMES ON AND I WOULD HAVE TO STOP AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF THEN ON FOR IT TO RETURN TO NORMAL. IT STARTED INFREQUENTLY AND NOW IT HAPPENS FEW TIMES A DAY. THE DEALER CLAIMS THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE WHILE AN ONLINE SEARCH REVEALS THAT LOT OF OWNERS ARE FACING THIS EXACT SITUATION.
2017 WITH 34K ON IT AND ON A MINIMUM OF 2 HANDS I HAVE HAD THE ERROR SERVICE SHIFTER COME UP. AFTER CAR IS TURNED OFF, IT WILL GO AWAY FOR NO SPECIFIC AMOUNT OF TIME AND THEN EVENTUALLY POP BACK UP EITHER WHILE DRIVING OR FIRST START UP OF THE DAY.
THE GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR LIGHTS ALL CAME ON, A SERVICE SHIFTER ERROR CODE. I HAD TO PULL OVER PUT IT IN PARK AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON AND IT RESET ITSELF. IN FEBRUARY 2019, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND THEY FIXED THE ISSUE . THE PARTS WERE WARRANTIED FOR 2 YEARS OR 24,000 MILES ACCORDING TO WESTGATE JEEP IN RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA. A WEEK OR LATER THE GEAR SHIFT ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN AND THEN I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AT WESTGATE IN RALEIGH.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING LIGHT AND SEVERAL OTHER UNKNOWN LIGHTS ON THE GEAR SHIFTER WERE ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING. THE FAILURE RECURRED SPORADICALLY. THE DEALER WAS NOT CALLED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS NEITHER DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 42,000.
3 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED MY JEEP IT SHIFTS TERRIBLY. IT DOES NOT DO IT 100% OF THE TIME THOUGH. IT GETS STUCK IN GEARS WHEN SHIFTING THEN REVS TO HIGH RPMS OR JENKS FORWARD. OFTEN TIMES IT FEELS LIKE YOU GET REAR ENDED IT JERKS SO BAD. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP A FEW TIMES, AND MOST MECHANICS SAY IT IS NORMAL. I AM AFRAID IT WILL JERK FORWARD AND I WILL RUN INTO SOMEONE ONE OF THESE DAYS. IT IS WORSE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, HOT DAYS WHEN A/C IS RUNNING, ETC. IT DOES NOT PERFORM ANY DIFFERENTLY WHEN VEHICLE IS WARMED UP. IT SLIPS GEARS AT BOTH HIGH SPEED AND LOW SPEED, MAKING A LOUD NOISE AND ABRUPT MOTION FORWARD.

I HAD JUST GOT OFF THE INTERSTATE AND WAS GOING DOWN THE EXIT RAMP AT APPROXIMATELY 40MPH WHEN SRVC 4WD INDICATOR LIGHT CAME UP ON THE DASH. I DROVE HOME WHICH WAS APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES AWAY. I PARKED AT THE HOUSE, TURNED THE JEEP OFF. WAITED A COUPLE MINUTES AND TURNED IT BACK ON TO SEE IF THE LIGHT WENT OUT. IT DID NOT. IT WAS ABOUT 8PM AND THE DEALERSHIPS WERE CLOSED SO I PLANNED ON MAKING THE PHONE CALL THE NEXT MORNING TO HAVE IT CHECKED AS I HAD JUST RECEIVED A RRECALL ABOUT MY PTU/SPLINES/DIFF ANYWAYS THAT ALSO NEEDED TO BE CHECKED. ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER I WENT OUTSIDE TO MOVE MY LAWNMOWER AND NOTICED A HUGE PUDDLE OF DARK GREY GREASE ON THE CONCRETE BEHIND MY JEEP.
'SERVICE REQUIRED' LIGHT CAME ON, SHIFTER BEZZLE NEEDS REPLACED ACCORDING TO DEALER, THEY SAID IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY, THEY CANNOT GET THE PART FOR WEEKS AND SAID I CANNOT DRIVE IT BECAUSE THE SHIFTER COULD 'GO OUT AT ANY TIME', IT IS $450 FOR THE PART ALONE, AND NOW NEED A RENTAL.
I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE ON JULY 27TH PAYING 28,000 DOLLARS FOR IT. I TEST DRIVE IT AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. TWO DAYS LATER MY 'SERVICE SHIFTER' LIGHT CANE ON AND EVERYTHING BY MY SHIFTER WAS ILLUMINATED. TODAY (08/03/2020) IT HAPPENED AGAIN. NUMEROUS PEOPLE ONLINE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR JEEPS DOING THE SAME THING. I HAVE UNDER 60,000 MILES ON THIS JEEP AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. I CAN END UP BEING STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS I TRAVEL A LOT. PLEASE RECALL THIS ISSUE AS MANY PEOPLE ARE PAYING TO GET THIS FIXED WHEN IT'S NOT THE CAR OWNERS FAULT.

MY SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON FOR ALL OF THE SPACES ON MY SHIFTER. TWO DEALERSHIPS HAVE NOT SEEN ANY CODES TO MY SPECIFIC CAR. ALSO, MY SPARK PLUG BURNT OUT AT 45,000 MILES AND I WAS TOLD THAT IS NOT SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN THAT WAY.

MY KEEP IS NOT EVEN AT 30.000 AND THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CAME ON. I WENT TO TURN IT ON FROM THE PARKING LOT AND THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED IT.
I KEEP HAVING TO DO OIL CHANGES WITHIN A 1 1/2 MONTHS WITHOUT EVEN GOING 3,000 MILES. ALSO MY CAR SHUTS ON AND OFF RANDOMLY AND THE POWER GOES OUT ON THE RADIO AND SPEEDOMETER. I'VE TAKEN MY CAR IN AND THEY RUN A DIAGNOSTIC AND ALWAYS TELL ME THAT EVERYTHING WITH THE CAR IS FINE. THIS SHUT OFF SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN I STOP AT A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. ALL THE POWER SEEMS TO GO OUT AND THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF. THE LIGHTS ON THE RADIO AND SPEEDOMETER HAVE GONE BLACK WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION, IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE I'M DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I'M HAVING TO GET MORE FREQUENT OIL CHANGES.

THE SERVICE ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT, WHO WORKS AS AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE WITH A DEFECTIVE BRAKE BOOSTER. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE BRAKE BOOSTER HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE MONTHS LATER. THE CONTACT CALLED VICTORVILLE MOTORS (14617 CIVIC DR, VICTORVILLE, CA 92394, (760) 843-8317) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,622.

WHEN COMING TO A STOP ON A CITY STREET MY VEHICLE DINGED, TURNED OFF AND A MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE DASH 'SHIFT TO PARK OR NEUTRAL, PRESS BRAKE, SELECT GEAR'. I COULD NOT USE MY STEERING WHEEL OR BREAKS DURING THIS TIME. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND FULL TOOK MY KEY OUT. THEN ATTEMPTED TO START IT. I ONLY HEARD A SLIGHT SOUND BUT NO TURN OVER. I REPEATED THIS STEP AND THIS TIME, AFTER MOMENTARILY SPUTTERING, I WAS ABLE TO GIVE THE CAR GAS AND IT STAYED ON. I COULD SMELL OIL AT THIS POINT. IT SEEMS THIS IS RELATED TO EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION, WHICH TRIGGERS THE CAR TO SHUT OFF TO PROTECT THE ENGINE. EXCEPT THE OIL LEVEL IN THE VEHICLE IS FINE AND THERE ARE NO PRIOR WARNINGS BEFORE THIS HAPPENS.
WHILE DRIVING 40 -50 MPH ON HIGHWAY 89 IN FLAGSTAFF, AZ I NOTICED A DASH MESSAGE STATING THAT THE SPEED WAS TOO HIGH TO SHIFT INTO 4 WHEEL LOW, ABOUT A MINUTE LATER I NOTICED A DASH MESSAGE THAT STATED THE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK COULD NOT OCCUR AND I NOTICED THAT THE 4 WHEEL LOW BUTTON WAS FLASHING RED. A MINUTE LATER DASH MESSAGE 4 WHEEL LOW WAS CANCELED AND THE 4 WHEEL LOW LIGHT STOPPED FLASHING. I STOPPED AT ABOUT 3 LIGHTS ABOUT 1 MILE APART. ON THE 3RD LIGHT I HAD TO TURN LEFT AND MERGE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC BEFORE ENTERING INTERSTATE 40. AS I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE THE TRANSMISSION BUCKED SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN AS I MOVED IN FRONT OF ON COMING TRAFFIC THE DRIVE SYSTEM DISENGAGED AND THE ENGINE REVVED. THERE WAS NO DASH MESSAGE NOR WERE THERE ANY TRANS AXLE LIGHTS FLASHING. AS I COASTED TO A STOP TRAFFIC WAS PILING UP BEHIND ME. I PLACED THE THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND THEN BACK INTO DRIVE, BUT IT DID NOT ENGAGE. AS I WAS ALMOST STOPPED, I HIT THE BRAKES AND STOPPED, THEN TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK. I THEN RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND IT SHUT OFF, SO I STARTED IT AGAIN AND PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO DRIVE AND IT ENGAGED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY NOTICED OR COULD DO. ALTHOUGH I DID NOT THINK I HAD PRESSED THE 4 WHEEL LOW BUTTON, I CONSIDERED THAT I MAY HAVE INADVERTENTLY, SO AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP I TESTED TO SEE IF I COULD CREATE THE SAME CONDITION AND I COULD NOT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE BUTTONS FOR THE TRANS AXLE WERE NOT EASY TO PUSH INADVERTENTLY. ALSO, WHEN PUSHED THE LIGHTS ON THE BUTTONS WOULD FLASH YELLOW AND NOT RED. THIS TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN SLOW TO ENGAGE AND BUCK AT TIMES SINCE NEW. IT ALSO GOES INTO NEUTRAL WHEN TRYING TO DOWNSHIFT BEFORE SHIFTING TO A LOWER GEAR ON DOWN SLOPES. I AM WORRIED THAT IT COULD BE DANGEROUS IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS AGAIN AT THE WRONG TIME.

AT FIRST INTERMITTENTLY, NOW IT IS ON PRETTY MUCH FULL TIME AFTER MOVING INTO GEAR. TOOK TO WYLER EASTGATE JEEP ON 7/16, THEY INFORMED ME THE BEZEL ON THE SHIFTER NEEDED REPLACEMENT, AND THE PART WOULD BE IN THE FOLLOWING WEEK. I HAD THEM KEEP THE CAR FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE FOLLOWING WEEK THEY NOTIFIED ME IT WAS POSSIBLE THE PART WOULDN'T BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF THE JULY, BUT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO IT WOULDN'T COST ME ANYTHING. I HAVE SINCE FOLLOWED UP IN AUGUST AND AGAIN LAST WEEK AS THE DEALER NEVER CALLED BACK ON THE STATUS. THE LATEST CALL WAS ON 9/29 (ALMOST 3 MONTHS SINCE FIRST APPOINTMENT), AND THE PARTS DEPARTMENT CONTACT TOLD ME THAT OF THE TWO PARTS NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR, ONE WAS PLACED ON "INCREASED BACKORDER STATUS" FROM JEEP, MEANING THAT THE DEALERSHIPS WERE "BLOCKED" FROM ORDERING IT OR IT EVEN BEING SENT OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY ARE NOW UNAWARE OF WHEN THE PART MIGHT BECOME AVAILABLE AGAIN. FROM THIS EXPERIENCE AND THE COMMENTS, IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH THE PART IS FAULTY, HENCE IT WON'T BE USED ON A REPAIR. SOUNDS LIKE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUED IF THE PART IS FAULTY AND THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS IS SO WIDESPREAD, AND JEEP HASN'T ADDRESSED IT TO CONSUMERS OR DEALERS. MY 2017 CHEROKEE HAS 28,000 MILES.
