WHILE IN MOTION ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS, "SERVICE SHIFTER" MESSAGE APPEARS ON DASH AS WELL AS ALL SHIFTER LIGHTS ILLUMINATE. CAR SEEMS TO "MISFIRE" AND JERK FORWARD. DEALER HAS 'REPAIRED' 4 TIMES AND ISSUE RETURNS. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE 1 YEAR I HAVE OWN THIS CAR (PURCHASED NEW). THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS APRIL OF 2018 AND MOST RECENTLY 3/20/19
I WAS GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND I HEARD A DING. I LOOKED AT WERE MY MPH IS DISPLAYED AND IT WAS SHOWING SERVICE SHIFTER AND ALL THE LIGHTS WHERE THE SHIFTER IS WAS LITE UP.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THERE WAS A POPPING SOUND UNDER THE HOOD. THE CONTACT PULLED OFF OF THE ROADWAY AND, WITHOUT WARNING, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.
"SERVICE SHIFTER" LIGHT CAME ON AND ALL GEARS LITE UP WITH RED INDICATOR LIGHTS BESIDE EACH GEAR BEING P,R,N AND D. THIS HAPPENED WHILE MY VEHICLE WAS SITTING STILL AND IN "PARK" IN MY DRIVEWAY THE FIRST TIME, SITTING IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH WHILE I WAS DROPPING MOM OFF AND I DON'T REMEMBER IF IT WAS IN PARK OR DRIVE AT THE CHURCH.
3/15/2019 AT 12:15 I WAS DRIVING BACK TO WORK AFTER LUNCH AND MY CENTER DISPLAY PANEL SUDDENLY CHANGE FROM DISPLAYING MPH TO A MESSAGE THAT READ "SERVICE SHIFTER". WHEN I LOOKED AT MY GEAR SHIFT ALL LIGHTS WERE LIT INSTEAD OF JUST D. I IMMEDIATELY RETURNED HOME (I WAS A MILE AWAY) AND PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. THE MESSAGE REMAINED ON MY CENTER CONSOLE AND LIGHTS REMAINED LIT. I TURNED OFF/ON THE VEHICLE WITH SAME RESULTS. I PUT VEHICLE INTO GARAGE AND CALLED ROTHROCK MOTORS TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. WILL DROP VEHICLE OF 3/16/19 BUT NO ETA ON RETURN SINCE THEY CANNOT TELL ME WHAT THE ISSUE IS UNTIL THEY LOOK AT IT. HOWEVER, I'VE FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS IN THE PAST 2 YEARS AFTER A VERY QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH WITH SAME ISSUE FOR JEEPS, NOT JUST MY MODEL.
JEEP STALLS COMPLETELY WITHIN A FEW BLOCKS OF START UP DURING A TURN. I HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTART IT. RESTART IS LABORED, AND ON AT LEAST 2 OCCASIONS, I HAD TO TRY MORE THAN ONCE TO RESTART THE CAR. MILEAGE IS UNDER 37,000. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP RECOGNIZED THE PROBLEM WHEN I CALLED THEM, AND HAS PERFORMED AN EARLY OIL CHANGE. THAT SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM,AT LEAST TEMPORARILY. THEY INSTRUCTED ME TO RETURN THE CAR TO THEM IN 2000 MILES FOR THEM TO CHECK THE OIL.
SERVICE SHIFTER APPEARS ON DASH WHILE DRIVING AND ALL LIGHTS ON SHIFTER ILLUMINATE. THIS HAS OCCURRED TWICE-- ONCE WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE FROM BEING PARKED FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND AGAIN ONCE THE CAR WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 35-40MPH. EACH TIME I CUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE LIGHTS DISAPPEARED.
WAS DRIVING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR SHUT OFF AND THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART FOR THE NEXT 6 HOURS. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS DUE TO LOW OIL LEVEL. I HAD THEM DO AN OIL CHANGE. WAS TOLD THIS WAS PRETTY COMMON FOR THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, I WAS LUCKY TO ONLY BE GOING ABOUT 25 MPH IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. A RECALL AND REPAIR NEEDS TO HAPPEN BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.
WHILE THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUNNING AND IN MOTION ON CITY STREETS, THE ENGINE WILL CUT OFF. THE CAR IS LEFT WITHOUT POWER STEERING AND WITHOUT POWER BRAKING. THE CAR MUST BE PLACED IN PARK TO RESTART THUS NECESSITATING THE NEED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS AND APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEMS OTHER HAVE ON THE SAME MODEL (WITHOUT RESOLUTION).
OIL LEAKS AND THERE IS NO LOW OIL LIGHT IT SHUTS OFF ANYWHERE. SAFETY ISSUE IT SHUT OFF ON ME IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. THE LAST 2 OIL CHANGES I'VE HAD I'VE HAD THIS ISSUE, THEY WERE DONE AT DIFFERENT PLACES. THERE IS NO VISIBLE LEAKS.
I BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW, AND I HAVE THE VERY COMMON SERVICE SHIFTER PROBLEM GOING ON IN MY CAR. I MADE THE APPOINTMENT FOR TODAY AND OVER THE WEEKEND THE CAR JUST SLIPPED INTO NEUTRAL WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND SCARED ME TO DEATH. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON TO GET IT TO LET ME TO SHIFT. I JUST GET A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TELL ME IT IS COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT I HAVE TO PAY $100.00 DEDUCTIBLE. WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING WHEN THIS SEEMS TO BE A JEEP ISSUE!!!!! I AM SO MAD AND FRUSTRATED AND I DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO FORK OUT WHEN I ALREADY HAVE EXTENDED COVERAGE.
NO POWER WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. THIS OCCURS SPORADICALLY WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP, OR WHILE MOTION IN LOW AND MIDDLE GEARS. MAJOR ISSUE WAS WHEN IT WOULD NOT ENGAGE TRANSMISSION AFTER STARTING VEHICLE DUE TO FAILURE. THE SYSTEM LOCK ENGAGED WITH AUTO-ENGAGED THE PARKING BREAK AND I WAS UNABLE TO DISENGAGE.
ENGINE LIGHT IS ON DUE TO DEFECTIVE THERMOSTAT. IT'S NOT RIGHT MAKING SOMEONE PAY FOR A DEFECTIVE PART ON A 2YR OLD VEHICLE DUE TO POOR QUALITY! IF AMERICAN CARS ARE SO GOOD THEN WE SHOULDN'T HAVE ISSUES LIKE THIS.
1ST, MY ENGINE LIGHT IS ON DUE TO A FAULTY THERMOSTAT IN THE ENGINE. I'M DISPLEASED A 2 YEAR OLD CAR HAS SUCH AN ISSUE. I'VE BEEN TOLD IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM OR DEFECT. 2ND MY CRUISE CONTROL GOES ROGUE AT TIMES AND SPEEDS UP EXCESSIVELY IF NO INTERVENTION HAPPENS TO STOP IT.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE IT WILL RANDOMLY HAVE A WARNING FOR @SERVICE SHIFTER' ON THE DASH AND ALL LIGHTS ON THE LEFT OF THE GEAR SHIFT WILL BE RED FOR PRND +\- (SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK SO I HAVE TO PULL OVER SHUT OFF THE CAR AND WAIT AND TURN IT BACK ON). WHEN SEARCHING THE WEB THERE WERE SEVERAL FORUMS WITH THE SAME THING IN OTHER JEEP MODELS AND A LOT OF THE CHEROKEES AND WERE ALL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE DEALERS WANTING TO FIX IT CORRECTLY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT MEANS THE CAR CAN NOT TELL WHAT GEAR IT IS IN. LORD FORBID IT THROW ITS SELF IN PARK WHILE GOING 70 ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.
SERVICE SHIFTER PROMPT CAME ON AT 26,000 MILES. SEEMS TO BE ONE OF THE MAIN CULPRITS FOR THIS MODEL.
WAS DRIVING ON THE HWY ABOUT 65 MPH IN MOTION AND THE SERVICE SHIFTER NOTICE CAME ON AND ALL THE GEARS TO THE RIGHT WERE LIT UP BRIGHT RED! I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR LAST NIGHT AT 6:30! I BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE I WAS REAR ENDED ON THE HWY AND MY OTHER CAR WAS TOTALLED, I AM A SINGLE MOM OF THREE AND JUST HAD THE ACCIDENT AND IN PAIN AND GO BUY THE JEEP AND NOW THIS SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON THE DAY AFTER I BUY IT!!!! JUST MY LUCK. THIS IS UNSAFE AND HAS CAUSED THE VEHICLES TO LOCK UP AND 2 OTHERS WITH THE SAME VEHICLE REPORTED THE CAR GETTING TOTALLED DUE TO IT LOCKING UP WHILE DRIVING. IF THIS HAPPENS WHILE MY KIDS ARE IN THE CAR I WILL ENDING UP CONTACTING A LAWYER FOR A RECAL NOT BEING PUT OUT DUE TO THE HIGH HEAVY VOLUME OF THIS EXACT PROBLEM AND NOTHING BEING DONE ABOUT THE MASS PRODUCTION OF THE ISSUE. *DT *DT
ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WHEN I START MY VEHICLE THE ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER LIGHT UP. THE DASH WILL THEN SAY THE MESSAGE "SERVICE SHIFTER NOW". THE ONLY WAY TO CLEAR THE MESSAGE IS TO SHUT MY CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. SOMETIMES 3 OR 4 TIMES IN A ROW. LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I HOOKED UP A TESTER TO SEE IF IT GAVE A CODE. IT GAVE CODE U0164 "LOST COMMUNICATION WITH HVAC CONTROL MODULE". I SHUT IT OFF AND RESTARTED AND THE DASH SAID "NO BUS" AND I HAD NO CONTROL OVER MY FRONT WINDOWS, RADIO, TOUCH SCREEN OR HVAC. MY HEATER WAS ON HIGH AND SO WAS THE FAN. I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE IT. AFTER I SHUT IT OFF FOR APX. 15 MINUTES OR SO IT CORRECTED ITSELF. SPEEDS VARIED FROM 0 MPH UP TO 60 MPH. SOMETIMES HAD TO DRIVE WITH THE MESSAGE BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T GO AWAY AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES.
SINCE JANUARY OF 2018 I HAVE BEEN HAVING CONSTANT PROBLEMS INTERNALLY WITH MY JEEP. I GOT THE JEEP IN APRIL OF 2017 WITH 14 MILES TOTAL ON IT. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP NEVER ROTATED MY TIRES WHEN THEY CHANGED MY OIL AND TOLD ME THEY DID ROTATE MY TIRES RESULTING IN ME HAVING TO GET A BRAND NEW SET OF 4 TIRES IN 2018 BECAUSE ALL THE TIRES WENT COMPLETELY BALD (TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE ON). MY FIRST OF 4 CYLINDERS WENT OUT IN JANUARY 2019 THAT WAS FIXED ON WARRANTY. SECOND CYLINDER OF 4 THAT WAS A DIFFERENT CYLINDER THAN THE FIRST WENT OUT FEBRUARY OF 2019 THE JEEP DEALERSHIP GAVE ME A GOOD YEAR PROGRAM AND MADE ME PAY A FEE AND THEY FIXED ALL 4 CYLINDERS. CURRENTLY IN NOVEMBER 2019 MY ENGINE LIGHT IS COMING ON AND I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE ISSUE IS NOW. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL JEEP DEALERSHIPS THAT HAS NOT SEEN THIS ISSUE ON OTHER JEEPS SO I REALLY BELIEVE I GOT SOLD A POORLY MANUFACTURED JEEP.
CPSC: HAS ANYONE REPORTED THAT JEEP CHEROKEES WITH A 4 CYLINDER ENGINE ARE JUST SHUTTING OFF WHEN OIL DOES NOT GET TO THE UPPER PART OF THE ENGINE. IT HAS HAPPENED TO US AND QUITE A FEW OTHERS APPARENTLY. I KNOW THE PROBLEM IS NOT UNIQUE TO US. THIS IS AN UNSAFE SAFETY FEATURE AND DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. *DT *JS *TR
WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MILES AN HOUR AND THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF. LOST ALL POWER. HAD TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. WHEN I WENT TO RESTART THE CAR IT SAID PUT CAR IN PARK POSITION. IT WAS ALREADY IN PARK. CAR RESTART AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. *BF... *TR
THREE TIMES WHILE ACTIVELY MOVING IN TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE HAS SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN ABLE TO BE STOPPED SAFELY AND PLACED INTO PARK. THE ELECTRICAL WORKS SO HAZARD LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE ENGAGED. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE FAILS TO RESTART ON THE FIRST FEW ATTEMPTS. ULTIMATELY IT WILL RESTART. THE SERVICE REP INDICATED THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES AND HE HAS SEEN A LOT OF THIS ON THIS MODEL. HE NOTED THE ENGINE HAS LOOSE TOLERANCES TO ACHIEVE THE MILEAGE RATING. AS A RESULT IT LOOSES OIL RAPIDLY. AND JEEP IMPLEMENTED ENGINE SENSORS TO STOP THE ENGINE WHEN THE OIL IS LOW. THE SENSORS DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT IF THE VEHICLE IS MOVING OR AT WHAT SPEEDS. I CALLED THE DEALER ABOUT THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION IMMEDIATELY, TO WHICH WE GOT AN ANSWER TO DROP IT OFF, THEY WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT IT WHEN THEY GET TO IT. THIS VENDOR AND VEHICLE HAVE HAD OVER A DOZEN SIGNIFICANT RECALLS AND NEED TO BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD.
MY CAR WAS IN MOTION GOING TO STOP AND STALLED GOING 15 MILES PER HOUR. LOST POWER BRAKES POWER STEERING AND ALMOST WAS UNABLE TO STOP HAD TO VEER OFF ROAD TO AVOID GOING INTO INTERSECTION. CAR STARTED UP AGAIN AFTER 2ND ATTEMPT. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEY CHECKED THE OIL AND SAID THE OIL WASN'T READING ON THE DIPSTICK. IT HAD BEEN LESS THAN 4,000 MILES SINCE MY LAST OIL CHANGE. AFTER DOING AN OIL CHANGE THEN DOING AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AFTER ONLY 1000 MILES MY VECHICLE SHOWED THAT IT USED 1/2 QUART OF OIL. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE THEY HAVE HAD WITH 2.4 ENGINE WHICH HAS BEEN KNOWN BY CHRYSLER, HOWEVER THEIR NEGLIGENCE OF NOT NOTIFYING THE PUBLIC OR CORRECTING THE ISSUE IS GOING TO CAUSE INJURY AND HARM NOT ONLY TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DRIVING THESE VEHICLES BUT ALSO ANYONE THAT IS IN THE WAY OF THE VEHICLE WHEN IT DOES NOT STOP. I WAS INFORMED THAT IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO LOOSE 1/2 QUART EVERY 1000 MILES. BUT WHEN BUYING THE VEHICLE I WAS TOLD THAT THE OIL LIFE GAUGE WOULD INSTRUCT ME WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR AN OIL CHANGE APPROX EVERY 5000-6000MILES. GOING BY THAT I STILL HAD OVER 50% OIL LIFE WHEN MY CAR STALLED AND I HAD NO OIL READING ON THE DIPSTICK. AS I HAVE BEEN READING UP ON THIS ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED SEVERAL TIMES I LEARNED THAT THE CAR STALLS AS A SAFETY MECHANISM TO AVOID HARMING THE ENGINE. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR YEARS. WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN THE VEHICLES.
AS CAR IS BEING DRIVEN OUT A HIGHWAY A WARNING COMES ON SAYING SERVICE SHIFTER. PULLED OVER RESTARTED CAR AND WARNING SOMETIMES COMES BACK ON OR GOES AWAY AND RETURNS LATER. ONE TIME GETTING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT THE SHIFTER WAS IN REVERSE AND THE CAR PROCEEDED TO MOVE FORWARD INSTEAD OF BACKWARDS.
I HAVE A FEW PROBLEMS THAT IS GOING ON WITH MY JEEP. ONE, THERE HAS BEEN A FEW OCCASIONS WHERE I AM DRIVING MY JEEP, AT A SLOW SPEED, AND IT WILL DING AND LOCK UP. THEN IT WILL SHUT OFF. I WILL HAVE TO SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES BEFORE IT WILL ALLOW ME TO CRANK IT AGAIN. I HAVE ALSO HAD AN ISSUE WHERE WHEN DRIVING MY JEEP TO MY DESTINATION, IT DOES FINE. BUT ONCE I PARK, THE CAR WILL NOT START AGAIN UNLESS JUMPED OFF. I REPLACED THE BATTERY EXPECTING THAT TO FIX IT, BUT IT DID NOT. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES AND NO ONE CAN FIND A PROBLEM. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN SOME PROBLEMS WITH IT THROWING A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE CODE SAYS THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. WHEN I TAKE IT SOMEWHERE, THEY SAY THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR IS FINE. I JUST WANT MY CAR TO BE SAFE FOR ME AND EVERYONE AROUND ME. MY CAR HAS LEFT ME STRANDED ON MANY OCCASIONS, AND IT IS UNRELIABLE. I AM SCARED TO TAKE MY CAR ANYWHERE EXCEPT WORK AND HOME DUE TO THE FACT I DON'T TRUST IT.
WE HAVE HAD THIS JEEP FOR ONE YEAR. THE THE FIRST REPAIR WAS TO SERVICE THE BRAKES SYSTEM AFTER 1200 MILES. TODAY SAME THING AGAIN. I GOT IN MY JEEP TO RUN AN ERRAND AND STARTED THE CAR PRESSED ON THE BRAKE TO PLACE THE CAR IN REVERSE AND HEAR A HISSING SOUND UNDER THE DASH. THE BRAKE BOOSTER FAILED AGAIN I KNOW THIS BECAUSE ITS HAPPENED AT 1200 MILES ALSO AND THE DEALER REPLACED IT ALREADY.
2017 JEEP CHEROKEE STALLS ON RIGHT HAND TURNS USUALLY WITH AN INCLINE, BUT TWO DAYS AGO ON THE LEVEL SECONDARY ROAD IT STALLED . THERE IS AN OIL CONSUMPTION, OIL SENSOR, OR OIL PUMP PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS FAIL SAFE. WHEN THE CAR SHUTS OFF DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS ARE AT RISK OF REAR END COLLISION. PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED 6 TIMES TO US.
WHEN MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN, VEHICLE STALLED OUT COMPLETELY, JUST SHUT OFF, UPON TAKING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY BEGAN AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND FOUND IT TO BE USING OIL, HAVING TO ADD 1 QUART EVERY 1,000 MILES, AFTER READING FORUMS, CHRYSLER HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THIS FOR A FEW YEARS ON THEIR 2.4 ENGINES, AND IT IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THEY TOLD ME THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF WAS A FEATURE WHEN THE OIL GETS LOW, SO IT DOESN'T CAUSE FURTHER ENGINE DAMAGE. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A BUSY ROAD WITH TRAFFIC, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO MY 2017 JEEP SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN AUTOMATIC MODE. A NOTIFICATION POPPED UP SAYING I NEEDED OT BE IN PARK TO SHIFT. MY CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND I NEEDED TO SHUT IT OFF, WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON FOR IT TO RESTART. THIS HAPPENED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND MY DEALERSHIP COULD NOT SEE ME FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER WEEK. ONE OF THE TIMES IT HAPPENED, MY CAR WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON AND I REQUIRED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO TOW MY CAR. WHEN THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY LOOKE AT IT, THEY SAW NOTHING WRONG EXCEPT MAYBE I NEEDED A SOFTWARE UPDATE. THEY DID THE UPDATE AND MY CAR WAS FINE UNTIL RECENTLY. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH A LINE OF CARS BEHIND ME. MY DEALERSHIP CANNOT SEE ME FOR ANOTHER WEEK AND A HALF. I TOOK MY CAR TO AN AUTOSHOP AND THEY SAW NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND NOTICED THE SOFTWARE MAY NOT BE ALIGNED PROPERLY MEANING THE COMMUNICATION IS OFF. I AM FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND THERE ARE NO WARNINGS WHEN THIS IS ABOUT OT HAPPEN. I FIRST GOT THIS CAR BECAUSE I WAS EXPECTING A BABY. I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE SAFE AND RELIABLE. I AM TOO AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CHILD TO DAYCARE IN CASE THIS HAPPENS AGAIN AND SOMEONE HITS US FROM BEHIND. I WILL NEVER GET A JEEP AGAIN.
WHILE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE MADE A RIGHT HAND TURN AND ACCELERATED UPHILL. THE CAR DIED AND LOST ALL SYSTEMS INCLUDING STEERING AND LIMITED BRAKING. I TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AND FOUND OUT THIS WAS DUE TO LOW OIL. THIS HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN 4 MONTHS. NO OIL INDICATOR EVER APPEARED IN EITHER INSTANCE. SAID IT WAS A SAFETY FEATURE TO SAVE ENGINE BUT APPARENTLY NOT HUMAN LIVES. IT AS SCARY..I DO NOT TRUST THIS VEHICLE AND WHY IS IT CONSUMING SO MUCH OIL.
MY ENGINE CONSUMES OIL. I CANNOT EVEN REACH 2000 MILES BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. MY CAR WILL JUST CUT OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING (AT ANY SPEED INCLUDING HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND TURNS). WHEN THIS FIRST HAPPENED I CHECKED THE OIL AND THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY OF OIL. IT DIDNT EVEN REGISTER ON THE DIPSTICK. I HAVE HAD OVER 6 OIL CHANGES SINCE I BOUGHT MY CAR IN 01/2019 (LESS THAN A YEAR). I HAVE HAD OIL CONSUMPTION TESTING COMPLETED AND EVERYTHING "COMES BACK IN RANGE". THE ENGINE HAS BEEN INSPECTED AND NOTHING IS LEAKING OR FAULTY. MY CAR TAKES FULL SYNTHETIC OIL WHICH SHOULD LAST WAY LONGER THAN THAT. I AM AWARE THIS IS AN OVERALL ISSUE WITH 2017 JEEPS OF ALL MODELS. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP DIDNT SEEM LIKE HE KNOW MUCH OF ANYTHING AND TRIED TO TELL ME THAT THIS WAS NORMAL. I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE THAT COMPLETELY DEPLETES ITS OIL SUPPLY WITHIN 2000 MILES. HE THEN REFERRED ME TO MOPARS CORPORATE LINE WHO THEN REFERRED ME TO NHTSA TO FILE A REPORT.
MY JEEP HAS LESS THAN 30,000 MILES ON IT AND I KEEP UP TO DATE ON OIL CHANGES (EVERY 500 MILES); HOWEVER, WHEN THE 5,000 MILE MARKER STARTS APPROACHING I WILL BE IN DRIVING IN A FORWARD MOTION AND THE DASHBOARD WILL LIGHT UP SAYING "SHIFT TO NEUTRAL OR PARK", THE GAS PEDAL TIGHTENS UP TO THE POINT I AM NO LONGER ABLE TO STEP ON IT ANYMORE, AND THE STEERING WHEEL TIGHTENS UP AND I CAN NO LONGER MOVE THAT. AT THIS POINT MY VEHICLE JUST COMPLETELY STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. THE MOST RECENT TIME (4,100 MILES AFTER MY LAST OIL CHANGE) I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ONTO THE HIGHWAY THE OTHER DAY AND THIS SAME THING HAPPENED. IT TAKES ABOUT 4 MINUTES FOR THE CAR TO START WORKING AGAIN, BUT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE ISSUE THAT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. I HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE HAPPEN MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE PAST, AND THE DEALERSHIP SHRUGGED IT OFF. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS, A VEHICLE (EVEN WITHOUT A RECENT OIL CHANGE, LET ALONE A VEHICLE THAT IS UP TO DATE ON OIL CHANGES AND HASN'T HIT THE 5,000 MILE MARKER) SHOULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD. OBVIOUSLY OTHER PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. AT ANY POINT, I FEEL AS THOUGH MY VEHICLE MIGHT STOP WORKING ON ME AT A RANDOM TIME (AGAIN WITHOUT ANY WARNING WHATSOEVER) AND CAUSE ME TO BE IN A SEVER ACCIDENT. THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ALL SPEED, CITY, HIGHWAY, DRIVING STRAIGHT AND TURNING. PLACING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE, IN SNOW MODE, AND USE OF THE MANUAL SPORT MODE. IT HAPPENS AT RANDOM TIMES. THERE HAVE BEEN THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS FROM JEEP OWNERS ON VARIOUS FORUMS AND THE AUTOMAKER REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL. THERE ARE OTHER MORE EXTREME AND DANGEROUS CAUSES THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED BY OTHER JEEP OWNERS, SUCH AS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENABLING WHILE DRIVING AND TRANSMISSION LOCKED IN A SPECIFIC GEAR.

AT 9000 MILES THE SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE CAME ON WHILE DRIVING FROM CARTHAGE TO GALVESTON TEXAS CONTACTED A LOCAL DEALER AND WAS TOLD DONT PLACE IN PARK TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP DROVE IT BACK TO MARSHALL TEXAS TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY WERE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SHIFTER SO REPLACED THE ENTIRE SHIFTER.. AT 40,000 MILES SHIFTER LIGHT AGAIN TOOK TO DEALERSHIP IN CARTHAGE AND SAID THEY FIXED THE TCM TO TRANSMISSION. NOW AT 49000 IT HAS DONE IT AGAIN,REPLACING THE WIRING HARNESS FROM SHIFTER TO TRANSMISSION. BEEN IN SHOP FOR A WEEK STILL NO WORD .THE SERVICE SHIFTER COMES ON EVEY TIME IT IS CRANKED.

WAS GETTING A "SERVICE SHIFTER" MESSAGE ON DASH AND BROUGHT TO DEALERSHIP WHOM REPLACED THE SHIFTER MECHANISM UNDER WARRANTY ON JULY 11, 2018 AT 37,891 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT IT WAS OUR FAULT FOR LEAVING A CUP IN THE CUP HOLDER WHICH CAN SHORT OUT THE SHIFTER MECHANISM (SEEMS LIKE A BAD DESIGN IF YOU CANNOT USE A CUP HOLDER) NOW THE PROBLEM HAS COME UP AGAIN ON DECEMBER 21, 2018 WITH 54,230 MILES, MAKING THIS COMPONENT OUT OF WARRANTY. A CUP WAS NEVER LEFT IN THE CUP HOLDER AND WAS ONLY USED WHEN SOMEONE WAS IN THE CAR. I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO PAY FOR A SHIFTER EVERY 6 MONTHS AS LONG AS I OWN THE VEHICLE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS SYSTEM AND DUE TO THE NATURE OF IT BEING TIED TO THE TRANSMISSION OF THE CAR, IT SEEMS LIKE A VERY HIGH SAFETY CONCERN. THE FIRST TIME IT STARTED HAPPENING, IT OCCURRED FROM SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE AND THE CAR HAD TO BE TURNED OFF AND THEN ON TO OPERATE. THIS ISSUE BECAME WORSE AS TIME WENT ON. THIS LATEST OCCURRENCE HAPPENED WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE INTO DRIVE BEFORE DRIVING. TURNED OFF CAR AND TURNED BACK ON AND IT DID NOT DISPLAY THE ERROR MESSAGE. I AM SURE THIS WILL OCCUR MORE FREQUENTLY AS THE DAYS PASS SINCE I AM WRITING THIS AT THE TIME OF FAILURE.
AS I WAS ACCELERATING OUT OF A CORNER, I LOST TOTAL POWER IN THE DRIVE TRAIN. I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE AT ALL, ITS AS IF THE NEUTRAL WAS SWITCHED ON BY ITSELF. ALL MY LIGHTS ON THE GEAR SHIFTER LIT UP. MY DASH DISPLAYED A MESSAGE SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF THAT I HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL OR PARK, PRESS THE BRAKE AND CHANGE THE GEAR BACK TO DRIVE. AS THIS HAPPENED, I WAS ALMOST HIT FROM BEHIND BY THE DRIVER DRIVING BEHIND ME. I PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, PRESSED THE BRAKE, AND PUT THE CAR BACK IN DRIVE AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I TRIED IT AGAIN BUT THIS TIME I PUT IT IN PARK AND STILL NOTHING. SO I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. I WAITING ABOUT 10 SECONDS AND TRIED STARTING MY CAR WHICH IT WOULD NOT START. ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER WERE STILL LIT UP AND THE DISPLAY MESSAGE STILL SAID THE SAME THING. THE CAR FINALLY STARTED AFTER ABOUT 5 TRIES. ALL THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE. THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO CORRESPOND WITH THE MESSAGE THAT I GET SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK "SERVICE SHIFTER". I WENT TO THE DEALER TO GET THE SERVICE SHIFTER CHECKED OUT BUT SINCE I WAS PASSED THE 36K MILES, I HAD NO MORE WARRANTY. I HAVE ALSO RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE ONLINE AND A LOT OF JEEP CHEROKEES ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. SOME WERE EVEN IN ACCIDENTS WITH THEIR CHEROKEES WHEN THEY LOST POWER IN THE DRIVE TRAIN.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil and the engine was replaced. The contact stated that several years later while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle shut off without warning. The contact stated that the failure occurred for a second time soon after restarting the vehicle. The contact drove back to the dealer and the vehicle remained at the dealer for approximately 2 months. Once the vehicle was returned to the contact, the vehicle shut off again; the vehicle was towed back to the dealer. The dealer replaced the power software module and returned that vehicle back to the contact. Soon after retrieving the vehicle, the instrument panel went blank, and the vehicle shut off again without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and then back to the dealer; however, neither the independent mechanic nor the dealer could determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a complaint was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.

THIS IS 2ND INSTANCE OF DANGEROUS STALL OUT, HAD DEALERSHIP DOCUMENT LAST ONE, THEY SAID IT WAS DUE TO OIL BEING LOW, BUT CAR WASN'T DUE FOR CHANGE FOR ANOTHER 1000 MILES AT THAT TIME! HAD THERE BEEN ANY ONCOMING TRAFFIC, MY NINE YEAR OLD WOULD HAVE TAKEN BRUNT OF HIT THE WAY CAR STALLED THIS TIME. GOD FORBID I HAVE TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING AN ANIMAL AND GET KILLED!

CAR STALLS GOING DOWN ROAD COME TO FIND OUT WAS DOWN ALMOST 2 QUARTS OF OIL. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AND SERVICE ADVISER INFORMED ME THAT IT WILL BURN A QUART EVERY 2000 MILES OR SO AND I WILL JUST HAVE TO KEEP ADDING OIL. JEEP KNOWS ABOUT THIS AND ITS COMMON FOR THIS TYPE OF ENGINE, NOTHING THEY CAN DO CAR BARELY HAS 14000 MILES
