The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the contact had heard an abnormal noise. The vehicle had started overheating. The vehicle was hesitant to accelerate and the steering had become firm. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a faulty shifter vessel and ECU jumper harness. The vehicle had been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 69,808.
Saying Service Shifter. All light by PRND come on red. Have seen a lot of reports saying same thing for 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokees. Has been looked at by mechanic. Has been coming on once every week for 3 months now.
Driving in normal conditions, had the vehicle loose power to all 4 wheels when on the road. After taking it into a shop mechanic stated that the power transfer unit was the cause of the problem. This created an extremely unsafe situation leaving me unable to move the vehicle and not being able to control it in either direction
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. The contact stated that a message stating that the 4-wheel drive function had failed. The contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 23V411000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and 20V699000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however their VIN was not included. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer as of yet. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000
The Service Shifter light came on and keeps coming on sporadically. I was dismayed to learn that there are numerous complaints regarding the Service Shifter light on the 2017 Jeep Cherokee. Has this ever been formally addressed.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the Service 4-Wheel Drive message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the PTU needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
The power transfer unit, and yes it is available for inspection. I had it inspected by two auto mechanics. The problem appeared back in 2023. The issue I have been having is when turning, backing up or accelerating the back wheels are kicking in, it does not have as much power during acceleration. There is already a recall for this issue but vehicle isn't on this recall list. There is always a margin of error in manufacturing dates due to multiple possible issues it is possible that any car manufactured out side of the recall date could have been missed.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while stopped, the vehicle was shifted into reverse; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The service shifter warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
September 6, 2023 my 2017 Jeep cherokee started making noises while driving and the service 4wd light came on. I called Quirk Jeep service and I was told to not drive it and have it towed to the shop. The problem was diagnosed as a PTU failure. I was not off road but on a local paved road when it failed. As of today 9/13/23 I was told there were no PTUs available anywhere and my car was not covered by recall W47 (20V343 NHTSA).
Service shifter light is turning on the car at 20-60 mph and more. Car warning continues to appear over multiple periods of times and not able to see speed and determine if car is driving properly!
My vehicle was in 2 MAJOR wrecks. One in dec 2021, where I t boned someone who turned in front of me at a green light. $19k in damages. Should have totaled it. But how in the hell the air bags didn’t go off is amazing. Bc my chest hit the steering wheel so hard i had to be treated for it. Not only that but the wreck destroyed my lower vertebrae. After it took the shop 6 months to fix and taken back for problems multiple times. I had it 2 weeks, and the brakes failed. Due to something the shop did I’m sure but I rear ended a lady with no brakes at 45-50 mph. Slamming directly into her even though I saw her. I broke my toe I hit the brakes so hard. But again I hit her directly where all the sensors are and this wreck was worse than the first the vehicle totaled and no air bags went off…. I shattered my left knee from hitting the dash.broke my big toe on my right foot etc. why didn’t my air bags go off…… I bought my vehicle certified pre owned in 2019. There’s no way in either wreck I missed that air bag sensor. I work in the collision industry. I know they have to be hit directly on to make them go off but there is no reason mine shouldn’t have other than a defect. I was alone in the first wreck, the second I was further injured and had to stop treatment I was still undergoing from the wreck before bc of the lapsing. My daughter was also injured in the second wreck. Second wreck happened in July 2022
A few months ago, I was at a slow speed, looking for a parking space, when I set the car in parking it made a weird noise and did not stop. After that issue, an indicator light appeared on the board: SVC-4WD. After this, the indicator light came on almost every day. I took the Jeep to the auto repair shop where I usually go, they ordered the piece and had to wait for weeks. I saw on this website that this issue has a recall in several units. I just hope I can get a refund. I'm attaching the invoice.
SHIFTER GEAR HARNESS PTU REPLACEMANT. Driving down the road and the shifter light all light up and a message comes on saying service shifter the car has 45000 miles . take to dealer they say need a new shifter gear 535.00 . I google it to find out there is a recall on 2017 Jeep Cherokee but not on my vin ! really? have it fixed 3 months later a message appears on my dash again saying service 4wd . so I take it in and now the put is bad 3600.00 really ? jeep no help because original warranty expired .had a extended warranty also it read 75000 mils or 7 years guess what came first 7 years 2months after it expired this happen .I believe jeep is putting cars on the road they know has these problems also just two ago the shifter g service light came on again this time they said it was a cracked female cap on wire harness . they said as a courtesy they temp fixed no charge this time but if it happens again I would have to replace both shifter and harness 1200.00 cost really of course its going to happen again this car is lemon! they also told me that it was safe to drive while they order the Parts which takes weeks to get ! really safe to drive ? I don't think so as you read hundreds of people have the same problem . jeep has put their customer in unsafe vehicle where is the protection for the consumer? they say my vin is not on recall because of the factory it was produced in . that is crap its the parts that are bad and they are in all jeep Cherokee 2014 -2018!
Shifter Service message appears on dash while operating vehichle. All lights for transmission position are lit up at the same time. This occurred during "normal" operation of vehicle.
Service shifter message was displayed along with one chime.
Parking brake engage itself upon starting car and was still engaged while backing out of garage. Service parking brake and service start/stop warning lights are now on. Investigation for repair found excessive drain on battery for age of the battery (14 months).
I did have an incident in July of 2022, my car would not get out of park. I was in a drive through and put my car in park. When I went to put my car in drive. The vehicle completely shut off and began to roll backwards. The next set of issues, I first noticed the issues in the beginning of 2023. The service 4wd light is on and the parking brake will not engage. The 4wd itself works just fine, each terrain mode will engage. So Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram (High Point, NC), looked at my vehicle and said the PTU was bad and needs to be replaced. This passed weekend, I was driving entering a highway via acceleration lane and my car had trouble switching speed limits. Which leads me to believe the necessary power was not able to perform. This is detrimental to the safety of myself and others. Should my car's brakes fail or car lose power; it could seriously injure myself, innocent people in the vicinity of my car, or mechanics working on my car, etc. I work at a Pediatric office and would hate for the brakes to fail at work. Chrysler has already recalled 96,000 Jeep Cherokees for the exact same issue. Due to this, the PTU is back ordered and cannot be located anywhere in the US.
transmission slips to the point it jerks my car when it down shifts and going down a hill it will rev up over 3 rpm
Service shifter keeps popping out and I know thousands of other people have that issue and they still haven’t issued a recall or anything to fix it

The vehicle failed to start and was later towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the PTU had failed and needed to be replaced again. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (POWER TRAIN). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 89,000.

SHIFTER SERVICE light appears chronically while driving and locks the digital speedometer, all lights on console go red until car is parked and restarted. No one can tell me what this means, or how to fix it ... not even the dealer. Totally scary as I travel alone a great deal of the time, and today is just the latest occurrence of this over the last 18 months.
I brought car in for oil change and was told the R front axle was leaking. Brought it to dealer for repair and told Both that both front and rear axles needed to be replaced along with PTU. Was informed that the that was ordered was cancelled b/c 800 people across the country were looking for the same part. There were no safety warnings. I was told very unsafe to drive b/c front axle came out of PTU.
Service shifter light keeps going on after having shifter replaced 1 year ago
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle locked up. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle failed to exceed 25 MPH. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to move forward or operate in reverse. The check engine light was flashing. The vehicle was towed to her residence. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and referred her to the dealer. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V302000 (Power Train). The failure mileage was 68,177.
Service shifter
Service shifter light
"Service Shifter" light came on, and all my shifter's lights are red. Looking across the internet, this is a widespread issue. Thankfully this didn't cause an accident, but it sounds like some users report not being able to shift into park. Will be taking to the dealership soon (its too late in the day to drop it off now).
Service shifter message has been appearing and at times, all lights on PRND lighting up. The vehicle transmission may still engage or may not. Recent occurrence on 07/13/2013, vehicle took 20 minutes before transmission engaged. Fortunately, I was parked at work, going home. If this occurred on the road, has potential of wreck happening. Jeep dealership leaning towards voltage error, cleaned battery terminals, test drove, could not replicate error. Did not drive until 07/17/2023, service shifter message came back without all PRND lights coming on.
June 16, 2023 We were driving down the interstate with cruise control on and the jeep just shifted out of gear and stopped operating. It was still running, but was not operational. July 13, 2023 We towed it to the dealership in our hometown and were told that it was one month out of recall for the exact same problem. On the bill the dealership listed that the dog clutch failed and we were billed $5,563.95 to replace the PTU unit and told there was nothing Jeep would do for us. 1/15/2025 I took the Jeep back to the same dealership and now it is throwing codes for Transfer Case Motor Current- Performance or INcorrect Operation and Transfer Case Clutch Pressure Sensor-Signal Plausibility Failure. The soonest they can get it in is one month from now for further diag. Our safety was put at risk when the Jeep shifted out of gear and just stopped on the interstate with no other warning. The problem was confirmed by the dealer. I am not aware if anyone inspected the component when it was repaired in August 2023. No, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms in 2023, but now there is a Service 4WD light on, until i took it to the service department. Then it was off, but came back on the minute the sales manager drove it off the lot.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the parking brake failed to disengage. The contact shifted the vehicle into Service Mode for the vehicle to operate as needed. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal sound and the contact felt as if the brake pads were rubbing against the rotors. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed back to the residence. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
When starting my jeep my service shifter light comes on. I shut my engine of and the light goes off. Next morning start my engine service shifter light come on. I have to restart my jeep 5 times before the light goes off. I've called a jeep dealership and they inform me that I'm the third person within the last week to inquire about this information.
Several months ago, my dashboard displayed a service four-wheel-drive message. I took it to a mechanic. They diagnosed to have the code C14A7-97 CPU motor component system operation obscured or blocked. Further research was conducted and there are several bulletins out for this year and model regarding differential input splines wearing out due to a manufacturer issue creating a major safe issues. In addition on several occasions the warning light for my parking brake has come on, according to an article I read this is a symptom and safety issue related to the transfer case flaw. I speculate a parking brake failure could potentially cause a roll away. There is no recall for my specific VIN for this issue although it’s evident that this is one of the Jeep Cherokee’s that was effected. I fear that if this causes my vehicle to lose power while driving could lead to a serious accident.
I have a message that says service shifter
There was no accident but I would like to prevent one. I believe there should be a recall on my vehicle regarding the service shifter. This defect could potentially result in power loss to the front wheels and the transmission being impossible to put into park. My vehicle service shifter light is on and my car jerks while driving. Is this not a problem with many Jeeps?
Service shifter keeps going on but no dealer ship know what the problem is and I have been stuck because of it.
The car sometimes jumps, propels forward, possibly transmission related issue, and just happens randomly.
Service shifter light illuminates several times per month but disappears when engine is off. Battery randomly drains all power and needs to be jump started when temperature outside is warmer than 76 degrees
The parking brake deploys automatically (while parked), locking the vehicle, and leaving it undrivable. Just prior, there was an illuminated brake symbol and message to service parking brake, on dash screen. Vehicle was towed to a local garage, and diagnosis was: parking brake censor corroded due to water leak. Part was replaced. Two days later, brake locks vehicle a second time (while parked), due to water damage. Waiting for part to be replaced again, and continued effort to locate leak. I don't know if either of the failed parts are available for inspection, but I will inquire. My main safety concern is for brake to automatically activate while driving. Not to mention the cost for repeat servicing.
Upon starting the vehicle, the service shifter message came on the dashboard screen and all the lights on the shifter illuminated red. If I drive with it on, it stays on. When I turn off the Jeep and turn it back on, the message and lights go off. However, this message has appeared about once a month for the last few months. It is unknown if my safety has been at risk. I've called two different dealers and got widely different answers about what the problem could be, as well as very different cost estimates to fix it. But, no one really knows what the fix is. I've investigated this problem online and have found 100s if not 1000s of complaints about the same problem with no clear solution. Why is there no recall for this yet. It's been going on for years.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that when the vehicle accelerated, the vehicle was shaking erratically. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics where the vehicle was diagnosed with a failed rear differential. The contact was informed that the rear differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact was informed that the failure was due to a failed PTU. The vehicle was then taken to two Chevrolet dealers where the failure was diagnosed as a failed rear differential. The contact was informed that the rear differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was informed that only parts listed in the recall were covered under the recall. The contact was informed that additional parts were not covered under the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 80,941. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that when he stopped the vehicle and shifted into park(P), the gear was not recognized. Additionally, the “Service 4WD” warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) needed to be replaced. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
At random times, the vehicle will notify of a "Service Shifter" message that pops up on screen. The lights that indicate which gear the car is in all light up-park, neutral, drive, etc. Every light turns on and the notification shows up on the screen where speedometer is located. This is concerning-it has happened multiple times, if I turn the car off and back on, the notification goes away. However, it always comes back a few hundred miles later. I drive a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, and bought it in 2019 with only 16,000 miles on it. The notification first came up when I hit 20,000 miles and has persisted ever since periodically. If you search "Jeep Cherokee service shifter" you can find NUMEROUS forums where people have reported the same issues. It is clearly an issue that needs to be looked into further. I have already filed a safety problem before, and nothing was done about it. I recommend looking into this issue further, and googling the issue as well-there are far too many people reporting the same problem and there has been no recall to be issued.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a left turn, there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact stated that the gear shifter failed to move as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed about NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact mentioned that the rear differential was previously repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
The contact's daughter owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that on various occasions while his daughter was driving at various speeds, the "shift to park(P) or neutral(N), Press Brake" message was displayed, and the battery warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle started losing motive power shortly afterwards. The vehicle was able to restart, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
When I shifted vehicle to reverse a message of “service shifter” came on dash screen. No accident resulted but felt unsafe as to what would happen if not serviced. Mechanics that have been contacted has never heard of service shifter message. Have not been able to reproduce message, when started vehicle again message was gone. No other warning lamps, messages or no symptoms.
Ever since my transmission repair in October 6, 2022 I have had many lights on my dash and I continued to take it back to the dealer and they couldn't explain why they continued to be on. They were totally confused. The service 4wd light remained on and It was taken into another Jeep Dealer for review and it turns out the PTU assembly and actuator are in need of replacement and it is at a cost of $3500. The transmission and gear shift assembly were just replaced at a cost of $9,000 in October of 2022. Jeep has had many issues with the transmission and PTU assembly. Jeep stated they only have six dealers across the US with these and they can't get them as they are behind on the manufacturing because of all the problems. This should either be covered under the powertrain warranty or a recall process. This has been well documented of the problems.
While driving and once when shifted into drive the service shifter light and warning has came on and all the lights by the shifter light up. I had to stop and shut the vehicle off and turn it back on. The most recent time I had to shut it off and turn it back on for it to go off
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while approaching a stop sign, the contact heard an abnormally loud sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact noticed that the vehicle was rolling backwards even while in park and turned off. The contact stated that an unknown software update was performed; however, the failure recurred. There was no warning light prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed of failure with the differential and spline. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,200.
