ENGINE STALLING WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING/CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS BETWEEN 55MPH TO 65MPH
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP COMMANDER. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE PIN, VALVE, AND ENGINE DETACHED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT ALSO CALLED A REPAIR SHOP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 162,000.
FUEL TANK WHERE FILLER HOSE CONNECTS HAS STARTED TO LEAK WHEN I FILL TANK. ALSO EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS ARE MADE SO SMALL AND WEAK THAT THEY BRAKE AND DEALER KEEPS TELLING CUSTOMERS THAT ENGINE NOISE OF KNOCKING IS NORMAL ON COMMANDER.
"TAKATA RECALL" I OWN A 2008 JEEP COMMANDER WITH A 3.7 LITER ENGINE. I ALWAYS MADE MY OIL CHANGE AT 50,000 MILES OR 6 MONTHS INTERVALS. I HAVE LEARNED THAT JEEP CHRYSLER AND DODGE VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM 2005 TO 2012 ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM OF THE OIL PICKUP TUBE NOT WORKING PROPERLY OR GETS CLOGGED WITH SLIM SO THT NO ENGINE OIL REACHES THE PISTONS AND CYLINDER HEAD. WHILE DRIVING, MY ENGINE THREW A PISTON ROD TROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK AND INTO THE OIL PAN. I AM SURE THAT JEEP KNEW OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE OIL PICKUP TUBE BUT DID NOTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM SINCE THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE PULLED FROM THE VEHICLE TO REPLACE THE OIL PICKUP TUBE. I LOVE MY JEEP BUT AGAIN, JEEP KNEW ABOUT THIS ISSUE WITH THE 3.7L ENGINE WITH THE 8TH DIGIT OF THE VIN BEING K. JEEP/DODGE/CHRYSLER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS OF THESE VEHICLES ESPECIALLY WHEN THE ENGINE IS NOW BLOWN ALL DUE TO A DEFECTIVE OIL PICKUP TUBE. THE CUSTOMERS/OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WITH THE 3,7L ENGINE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET A NEW ENGINE FOR FREE IF THE ENGINE BLOCK HAS BECOME DAMAGED OR REPLACE THE OIL PICKUP TUBES FOR THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO HAVE THEIR ENGINE BLOWN. I HAVE SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ENGINE AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE TOP ISSUE AND THAT BEING A BAD OIL PICKUP TUBE WHICH CAUSES INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. I WAS DRIVING IN TOWN TAKING BTRASH TO THE DUMP WHEN IT THREW A CYLINDER AND SOUNDED LIKE BROKEN METAL IN THE ENGINE. ENGINE LOST COMPRESSION AND HAD TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED HOME. WHAT I THOUGHT MAY BE A STARTER PROBLEM, I NOTICED THAT THE CYLINDER ACTUALLY WENT THRU THE BLOCK AND OIL PAN. GOOGLE UP DODGE/JEEP/CHRYSLER OIL PICKUP TUBE COMPLAINTS, YOU WILL FIND THAT THEIR ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE MAINLY EFFECTING THE VEHICLES FROM 2005 TO 2012 WITH THE 8TH DIGIT OF THE VIN BEING A LETTER (K). LIKE TO GET MY ENGINE REPLACED WITH A GOOD USED ENGINE AT NO COST TO ME.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS OF YET. THE MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE AND ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH MANUFACTURER COMMUNICATION NUMBER: P57. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LOCAL DEALER VOYLES CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM OF BIRMINGHAM LOCATED AT 1313 GRANTS MILL WAY, BIRMINGHAM, AL 35210, (205) 403-5430, AND HAD THE RECALL REPAIR COMPLETED. THE DEALER STATED AFTER THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED THAT THEY CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID PACK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AS OF YET. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000.
TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON I-85 WHEN THE JEEP COMMANDER MADE A CLUNK SOUND AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THERE WAS NO POWER AND IT WAS UNABLE TO START. THIS OCCURRED AROUND 10PM WHEN I WAS HEADING HOME AFTER WORK. IT WAS A SCARY EXPERIENCE SINCE IT WAS DARK. I WAS EXTREMELY THANKFUL FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PRESENTING AND STAYED WITH ME UNTIL THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. I TOOK IT TO A FIRST MECHANIC WHO STATED THE ENGINE WAS TOTALED. I WENT FOR A SECOND OPINION TO ANOTHER MECHANIC SINCE THE CAR WAS MADE IN 2008 AND HAS ABOUT 112,000 MILES BUT WAS ALSO INFORMED THE ENGINE WAS TOTALED. THIS WAS A SHOCK AND DISAPPOINTING SINCE I DO NOT HAVE THE FUNDS TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE.

THE CAR STARTED ROUGH WHILE PARKED IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. IT WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY AND THEY SRATED THERE WAS COMPRESSION IN THE 4TH CYLINDER AND NEEDES FURTHER DIAGNOSING. IT WAS THEN TOWED TO ANOTHER REPAIR FACILITY, WHERE THEY STATED THE PISTONS WERE BAD AND NEEDED ENGINE REPAIRS.
AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS I HAD A CAR ACCIDENT WHERE A MAN RAN INTO THE BACK OF MY 2008 JEEP COMMANDER DUE TO THE VEHICLE STALLED ON A STREET AND THEN SHUT OFF. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINE. I HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE FOR YEARS WITHOUT MAJOR INCIDENT. HOWEVER HERE LATELY THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED AND THEN SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 45-55MPH. I HAVE HAD 2 TYPES OF RECALL WORK DONE. HOWEVER THAT HAS NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM AND THE CAR RIGHT NOW IS BACK AT THE DEALER.

8/27 PURCHASED USED VEHICLE, BEGAN DRIVE FROM MD TO SC, SURGING AT HWY SPEED; 8/28 ENGINE DIED AT 65 MPH, TOOK MANY TRIES TO GET ENGINE STARTED AFTER; 8/30 ENGINE DIED WHILE BACKING UP TWICE; 9/3 ENGINE DIED AT 40 MPH; 9/8 ENGINE DIED WHILE SITTING IN PARK; 9/9 ENGINE DIED WHILE SITTING IN PARK; 9/10 TOOK TO DEALERSHIP, NO CODES FOUND EXCEPT 8 COMPUTER UPDATES NEEDED, RAN UPDATES HOPING THAT WOULD SOLVE PROBLEM; 9/11 ENGINE STALLED AT 45 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC; 9/11 ENGINE STALLED WHEN SHIFTING INTO PARK TO DROP OFF CARPOOL; 9/12 TOOK BACK TO DEALERSHIP, HAD THROTTLE BODY REPLACED WHICH ENCASES THE TPS HOPING THAT IT WAS A THROTTLE POSITION CENSOR PROBLEM BASED ON RESEARCH; 9/17 ENGINE DIED WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT STOP LIGHT, TOOK MANY TRIES TO GET ENGINE STARTED AFTER; 9/18 ENGINE DIED WHEN TURNING ACROSS TRAFFIC IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE ENGINE ALSO SURGES WHILE DRIVING WITH A FEELING THAT THE ENGINE IS GOING TO CUT OFF. THE RPM NEEDLE WILL INDICATE THIS SURGING WITH A SLIGHT MOVEMENT. IN RESEARCHING THIS, IT SEEMS TO BE A PERSISTENT PROBLEM THAT COMES UP ON THE JEEP FORUMS. *TR
MY VEHICLE STALLED OVER 5 TIMES IN FIRST 10 MINUTES OF OPERATION. ONCE I GOT TO 50-60 MPH THE ENGINE WITH HESITATE AND STALL OUT AT HIGH SPEEDS AND REQUIRE A SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL TO RESTART. THIS HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT ISSUE WITH MY JEEP COMMANDER SINCE THE DAY I PURCHASED IT IN 2012. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE IN TO JEEP/CHRYSLER ON 4 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS AND THEY HAVE NEVER FOUND THE ISSUE. I HAD TO LEAVE MY VEHICLE WITH NAPERVILLE CHRYSLER/JEEP/RAM/DODGE ON FRIDAY 6/20 BECAUSE IT WAS NOT DRIVABLE AND DANGEROUS. THEY DETERMINED THAT IT WAS THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. I HAVE READ THAT 100'S IF NOT 1000'S OF JEEP OWNERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES AND TO DATE NO RECALL OR FIX. SHAME ON CHRYSLER, SOMEBODY WILL BE INJURED BECAUSE THIS ISSUE. *TR

BEGINNING AROUND THE WEEK OF JUNE 7TH, I BEGAN EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH MY COMMANDER. I WOULD PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND IT WOULDN'T START. THE LIGHTS, RADIO ETC WOULD COME ON BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T "TURN OVER". AFTER A COUPLE OF ATTEMPTS, IT WOULD START. THE FOLLOWING WEEK WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 95 IN BOSTON, THE CAR STOPPED UNEXPECTEDLY. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS VERY SHAKEN UP. I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR AGAIN AND DROVE HOME. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING AND I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. ON JUNE 14TH I HAD THE CAR TOWED THERE BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEED A WIRELESS IGNITION MODULE BUT THERE WERE NONE AVAILABLE & CHRYSLER WAS WAITING ON IT FROM THE MANUFACTURER. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THERE WAS A WAITING LIST OF APPROX 1,700 CUSTOMERS WAITING FOR THIS PART AND SEVERAL HUNDRED, LIKE ME COULDN'T DRIVE THEIR CAR. I ESCALATED TO CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE WHO HAVE CONTINUED TO GIVE ME THE RUN AROUND AND AS OF TODAY THEY HAVE NO STATUS ON THE PART. I HAVE BEEN PAYING FOR A RENTAL CAR SINCE 6/15. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND JUST BY TYPING IN THE NAME OF THE PART AND FOUND SEVERAL FORUMS WHERE OTHER JEEP OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. I BELIEVE THAT CHRYSLER NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS TO SEE IF THEIR IS A LARGER ISSUE OR AT LEAST MAKE THE REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE. *TR
