NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Jeep Compass. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My car has "overheated" over 20 times since I purchased this vehicle in November 2022. The "High Coolant Temperature" warning comes on, the temperature gage goes all the way up, the check engine light comes on along with the "lighting bolt" red symbol. This causes my vehicle to shut down. I have to put it into park, press the button to restart. Sometimes it takes several tries to get it to start again. I have been in almost 4 accidents because of this. Other times it happens when the automatic start re-engages at a stop light. It has happened while I am in my garage and it has been sitting overnight. It has happened while driving for 10 minutes, hours, etc. I have taken this into the dealership several times and they have not been able to find any codes or issues. At one point the dealership had my vehicle for 2 weeks trying to duplicate the issue to no avail. It comes and goes so quickly I have only been able to get a picture of the warning lights but not the high coolant temperature warning. This is a huge safety issue.
While driving on the highway or at a stop sign or signal light the car would stop and not start back and when driving on the highway it would stop just like that and takes a few minutes to restart causing backup traffic behind me. 12/6/2022 I took it to star Chrysler dealership on Jamaica avenue and I am still awaiting a diagnosis.my car has been doing this since before 11/14 when I first notified the dealership but nothing was done about it for over 2 weeks.
The contact’s son owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while her son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact’s son was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the auxiliary battery had drained the core battery. The contact was informed that the auxiliary and core battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable. The VIN was unavailable.
I will be driving and suddenly the car stops. The parking break comes on and the car won't start. Takes awhile to get it restarted. It seems dangerous and as I've googled seems like a problem all across the board not just me.
My headlights only work on random occasions. The bulbs don’t need replacing so it seems electrical. I can’t drive at night now because I never know if I’ll be able to see or not with this issue.
A cable going to the driver's side headlamp assembly was intermittently shorting and causing the headlight to turn off while driving. The cable and entire headlamp assembly had to be replaced to fix the issue. There are other reports of this issue on [XXX] . INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While driving, car began to overheat. I have recently completed an oil change where all my fluids are topped off to ensure proper functionality. Upon inspection, the coolant is completely empty and the car continues to use up coolant as it is used. Car becomes overheated within minutes of driving. When turning on the car occasionally, the dashboard flashes and does not work.
Since taking over ownership in 2020 of a 2018 SUV that currently has only 61,000 miles I've had electrical issues with the auto start/stop warning light coming on/off intermittently. I was told by that make and model dealership that that happens for several reasons and was of no large concern. I've had the 1 electrical recall 'reprogrammed', but then my car wouldn't start on Thanksgiving. Replaced the main battery then took it back to dealership, $180 later was told the steering gear rack needs replacing. I've heard a clunking sound in the steering for about 2-3 weeks. How with so few miles is that possible? After replacing battery they also said all old codes should've cleared from system and hadn't so they cleared them. I've also noted multiple times that the coolant seems to run on the low side periodically. I've already had warranty replace the washer fluid resevoir next to a hot engine component in 2021. The engine does not appear to cool as it should to me and the placement of hoses and electrical is so tight together this has me wondering if it affects the electronic controls to EVERYTHING. Had I not noticed the steering issue myself, no error or warning messages have displayed on the vehicle. It will not properly calibrate test itself and it is $1800 for this steering part and my warranties have all expired after only 2 years. Multiple electrical components seem to be reported issues as well as steering and engine issues for this year and model. I'm ready to trade it in! I feel the maker needs to re-evaluate this model and make several changes to ensure a safe and reliable vehicle as I do not feel safe to even drive it now even after dealer said I could for now. Problem will worsen, and I have a bad taste in my mouth of this maker now anyhow. I loved my car, now I'm left clueless as to what would be safe and reliable. Service reports and receipts can be uploaded if needed to verify the Dealerships notes and Services performed.
The auxiliary battery has failed at least 3 times (2018) and been replaced, as well as the main battery. When this happens the car is dead in the water, even the SiriusXM Guardian controls on the rear view mirror do not respond leaving you in dangerous situations. You are unable to contact emergency services for a tow, or emergency vehicles. The dealership said it was faulty batteries but has had to replace them one more time after replacing the ones they say were faulty by manufacturer. The dealership wants additional money for tracing the issue but the car is just out from warranty by a few months. Prior to this, the dealership did not trace to find any shorts and the batteries were confirmed to be malfunctioning. There are no error codes found when this occurs. Dealership has confirmed MANY Jeep Compass have had the batteries replaced.
After being serviced by my vehicle’s dealership only a month earlier (and still well within the powertrain warranty), my vehicle suddenly stalled and shut off in the middle of the freeway during peak morning traffic. I narrowly escaped being hit by a semi-truck from behind and had to quickly pull over to the side of the freeway as safely as I could. I’ve taken my vehicle to several mechanics who could find nothing wrong with my vehicle, save the open recall on similar models (though not my VIN in particular, which I do believe to be an error) involving an issue with the powertrain and an electrical chip. This vehicle has been thoroughly maintained with regular service intervals, yet somehow will randomly stall and shut off when driving. It is dangerous and discouraging.
Vehicle has shut down while driving during three separate occasions between 2021 and 2022. While driving, the vehicle flashed a message across the dashboard stating wording about the Electric system and the coolant levels went up, the car stopped for a few seconds, the parking brake came on, radio went off (car powered down) then everything went back to normal. The coolant levels went down, the message disappeared, and I proceed to driving to my destination.
The contact owned a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the steering wheel column became inoperable; however, there were no warning lights illuminated on the control panel. The vehicle was inoperable, swerved off the road, and caused an accident. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard where it was declared a total loss by the insurance adjuster. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.
I was driving my daughter to school going 25-30 miles per hour and the car engine shut off as we were moving on the road. I didn’t realize it was off until I couldn’t move the steering wheel. The car stopped in the middle of the road disrupting traffic. The lights on the dashboard were on but the engine wouldn’t start. The dashboard message said “place the car on Parking, press the break and push the button to turn on the car”. I attempted several times to place the car in Parking but it wouldn’t recognize the shift. Finally after several harsh attempts of going from Drive to Parking on the shift, the lights went off and the car recognized being on Parking. I was able to turn the car back on and drove it to the dealer. This is the second time that the car shuts off, the first time I wasn’t driving it though. It stopped working while warming up with the Auto Start feature and parked. It was asking for the same “to place the car on parking” but the car was already on parking. Eventually we unplugged the battery and plugged it back on and after 20ish minutes the car turned on again. No code was detected by their computer scanner. Mechanic claimed I may just need oil. No diagnosis as of today.
My car will flash a "Coolant Temperature Too High" message, vehicle shuts itself down. There is no way it’s too hot and it is really unsafe for my car to just shut down.
Recently purchased this 2018 Jeep Compass. Screen display brightness is blinding at night. Asked dealer about NHTSA Safety Recall T70/NHTSA 17V-740. Dealer said recall had been performed and only option was to replace instrument cluster at over $1000 parts & labor. This is not acceptable for an issue clearly described in the NHTSA Recall. There needs to be a reflash or software or sensor update. I cannot confirm what actions were actually taken by the dealer. Contacted FCA corporate and was told nothing further can be done. The cockpit central display is blindingly bright at night and is a safety hazard to driver and other motorists. It cannot be adjusted. The dealer was able to reproduce the issue but says recall performed and nothing further can be done. There were no warnings or messages with this issue as it is a defect or malfunction in components. If this cannot be resolved, I will simply trade the vehicle in as this should be the manufacturer's responsibility to correct this very unsafe situation. Thank you.
What the dealer told me when I brought there for a recall! The my car need a new engine after they did that now they are saying is the transmission
My 2018 Jeep Compass, Limited stalls out as I am driving. The headlights have never worked and when they do work they are intermittent.
Car is stopping while driving at highway speed (second time in a little over a month). Car was taken to Spartanburg dodge after first incident. They claimed it was due to unknown factor and then claimed it was low on oil, which was not true as there was no warning or low oil warning. this car belongs to my daughter and the dealerships think that women are not knowledgeable enough to know of the oil situation. On public forums, there are many sites telling of exact problem and the dealerships will not take responsibility for the situation.
Daughter was driving. Came to a stop sign, proceeded through after stopping and the the car's accelerator wouldn't work and the car stalled in the middle of the intersection. She had to turn if off and it started back up after a few "weird" sounds. Took it to a shop we trust, they checked it quickly and couldn't find a reason. Checked the battery:fine. Checked the oil: was low, told to return soon for oil. This incident was repeated the next day. She stopped driving it, dropped it off at the same shop. The shop inspected throughly, found to have no oil in the engine. Have been advised to add oil to this car every 1000-1500 miles to keep it safe.
About two weeks ago got to my destination ok. As I was leaving I tried to start the car and the brake pedal was hard to push. The car would not start but it would turn on. Nothing was left turned on before I started it. I looked at the voltage and it said 12.0. I kept turning on and off and the car would not start just turn on(radio and lights). Finally said maybe a jump would help. I found someone who could jump my car and it finally worked. Voltage went up to 14.2. My battery was changed exactly one year ago by a jeep dealer. Then this week I was driving on a local street and at a red light I stepped on the accelerator to go, the run stop feature stalled my car and shut it down. My breaks went hard, the voltage went down again. I was stuck on the street. I turned my hazards on to notify other cars. My son was in the car with me too. My anxiety level shot up. Ive had one too many issues with this car. I left the car off for about 10 mins and tried starting it again. Finally it turned on, weak, and all the lights went wonky but then it got stable and started running. I prayed that I get home safely. I did, and made an appointment to the service dealer. It is at the shop right now and they are trying to diagnose my car. Definitely a safety concern.
This Compass has been to North Point Jeep in Winston Salem, NC, 3 times for engine problems. The car overheats and then turns completely off after going 60 mph. We have complained but the dealership denies that there is an issue and these cars are "good". The car is currently at the dealership in repair and has been for the last month. Please make them accountable as we have spent a lot of money and time on this car that only has 40,000 miles. Please advise.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -the emergency brake will automatically turn on when my car stops due to the automatic stop start. Then it will not start again and it won’t let me turn the brake off. I have been stuck in the middle of traffic before because of this. Also, the automatic stop start has killed both of my batteries multiple times. In the last 2 years I have had this car, I have replaced my batteries 2 times and have had to go get them fully recharged multiple times because they just completely drain and die How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -I was unable to move my vehicle from the middle of the road while I was trying to get it to turn back on, this had happened several times Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -No Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -no Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -no there was not any warnings, there is usually a check engine light after the fact but not before, and it disappears after driving it once or twice after that happens
Failure of headlights turning on puts fellow drivers in danger. The lights work but turn on and off at random times. I do have the fog lights that work but I still need my headlights to work especially in the dark and rain.
My car uses too much oil and my car keeps shutting off after 3000 miles when I should be getting 5-6000 to an oil change. My engine literally ran out of oil in about 6 weeks and my mechanics stated that it must be a recall issue. I feel like this is a threat to engine safety.
Vehicle shut off/stalled while driving and check engine light came on. Lost control of steering, start/stop function etc. Warning lights came on for transmission and to service 4 wheel drive as well as tart top function failure. Could start car back up right away. Car is 2018 and less than 46k miles.
Jeep stalls while driving. Brake pedal becomes stiff and car will not start. Happens in the middle of the highway sometimes. It also will do this when I come to a complete stop. I have caused traffic interference and almost caused an accident. Sometimes I am able to get it started again after 10-15 minutes, sometimes I need to call a tow truck. The dealership said that it was the batteries in my key fab so they replaced them and it continued to happen. When researching online, I see that a lot of people have this issue and Chrysler has not responded to anyone.
My car has been shutting off, at low speeds and high speeds the auto on/off will go on even after I turn it off
Drove the vehicle I purchased and the lights on the dash board began to illuminate at 2500 miles. The u connect would go black, the dash lights air bags, emergency break, cruise control, etc would illuminate. The the car would shift out of gear automatically put in park flashing, and die in the middle of the freeway without warning, has happened like 3 times, now I am scared to drive it due to the safety of myself and others. I would have to restart the car and it would jerk, then be fine. The hood light would display hood open when it isn't and multiple other lights. Told the wiring harness is melted causing the problems. Lights that come on are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Check engine, Transmission light, Adaptive Cruise Control Automatic Emergency Braking Blind Spot Warning Forward Collision Warning Lane Departure Warning Lane Keeping Assistance Parking Collision Warning Rear Cross Traffic Warning
Leaking from moon roof with water filling spare tire compartment & filling passenger foot space.
I was sitting at a stop light when the start/stop system fault warning indicator light came on. My vehicle cut off unbeknownst to me. Was unable to drive once the light changed. I had to activate my hazard lights so I could try to restart my vehicle. During the first try the vehicle did not restart it just stalled, however, it restarted during the second try. The start/stop system warning indicator light did not cut off and the light stayed illuminated. at . This was very scary and unsafe because I was at a traffic light at the bottom of an hill and it was raining which could been a high risk for an accident. I immediately called the dealership and scheduled an appointment for service.
I have not had an incident related to this report. The 8.4" Uconnect screen in my Compass is beginning to delaminate. At this time, about 20% of the screen is affected and has been getting worse over the summer. I have been aware of this problem for almost 1 year, meaning it must have started last summer. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I'm submitting this request because a handful of the safety features of my vehicle are controlled through this screen (forward collision, lane departure, blind spot, parking sensors) and severe delamination may render these settings unreachable. This has not happened to me, but other owners have reported "ghost touches" as the sensors begin to fail. This is an issue because the settings can be changed or turned off without the driver's knowledge, resulting in an unsafe driving condition. My local dealership has confirmed through visual inspection that the screen is delaminating. They were not interested in diagnosing the problem without payment. The manufacturer was not willing to work with me outside of the warranty period, and has documented my case.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the parking brake independently activated. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that she turned off the vehicle and deactivated the parking brake to continue driving to her destination. The contact's daughter also experienced the failure three times while driving. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 139,000.
The Uconnect screen has started delaminating. This issue causes the radio to jump from screen to screen and station to station. The delaminating also causes the radio to override any operator selections.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while stopped at a stop light, the vehicle turned off and the Start/Stop system warning light illuminated. The contact disconnected the battery and then reconnected the battery and the vehicle started operating normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the second battery was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was contacted and a case was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.
The vehicle has a backup camera that works intermittently, but frequently shows either a black screen or a frozen image. I have scheduled service at the local dealership on two occasions, had to wait at least two weeks both times because the dealership could not work us in quicker. The camera started operating a day or two before the appointment on both occasions, so the dealership didn't do anything but verify that the camera is operating correctly. Note that this problem is recurring, but the intermittent nature has prevented any real diagnosis by the dealership. There are numerous anecdotal stories on the internet regarding this issue, but there does not appear to be any action by the manufacturer. Also, it is hard to get clear pictures of the screen, but I attached two with the hopes that they help. One basically shows the screen while the other shows the indicator is in reverse.
WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND SAID "SERVICE ENGINE", THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND SHORTLY AFTER RESTARTED ON IT'S OWN. WHEN IT RESTARTED IT DID NOT ALLOW ME TO REACH THE PREVIOUS SPEED AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO RESTART THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM. IT DID FINALLY LET ME REACH A DECENT SPEED. I PARKED THE CAR AND THEN LATER STARTED THE CAR, IT APPEARED TO BE NORMAL, THE CRUISE CONTROL WORKED AGAIN. AT HOME I WAS ABLE TO RESET THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT. THIS WAS DANGEROUS BECAUSE IF THERE WAS A VEHICLE CLOSE BEHIND ME THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT.
The car is unable to be driven. Sudden shifting and broken down ABS system
OUTRAGIOUS OIL CONSUMPTION, CAR SHUTS DOWN OR SLOWS DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY WHILE DRIVING, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND NOW READS CODE P1DD2, IVE ONLY HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR 1.5 YRS. AND IVE HAD TO CHANGE OIL ABOUT 8 TIMES AND CARRY EXTRA OIL WITH ME IN CASE IT ACTS UP OR NEEDS IT. NOW CAR WONT GO OVER 30 MPH AND SPITS AND SPUTTERS. I JUST GOT AN OIL CHANGE DONE! LITERALLY 2 DAYS AGO. PLUS I JUST HAD TO REPLACE SWAY BAR LINKS AND BOTH FRONT TIRES DUE TO ACCESSIVE WEAR. THIS VEHICLE DOESNT EVEN HAVE 35,000 MILES ON IT. THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON TO REPLACE THOSE THINGS SO SOON. PLEASE HELP!
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, while driving at various speeds, the transmission temperature warning light was illuminated. The contact also stated that when the gear shifter was shifted into reverse(R) or drive(D), the vehicle was jerking. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer on three different occasions; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Vehicle has Bi-Xenon Headlights which have started to intermittently fail while driving. Sometimes one light lights up alternating side to side and sometimes both will not light,. Sometimes one will come on immediately and the other will take up to 5 minutes to light. On two occasion both have shut off while driving at night. Definite safety issue. Occurs irrespective of the headlight switch position (Auto or On) Dealer has been unable to replicate the issue on demand.
My Jeep has been stalling on me my oil lamp came on twice the day before i didn’t think anything of it because i needed a oil change anyway got the oil change car stalled at a red light my auto stop start came on after i shunt the car down and turned it back on now it’s stuck on
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The contact arrived on the scene and added two quarts of oil to the engine. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, and the dealer performed an oil change; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 61,938.
My U-Connect Navigation system on my 2018 Jeep Compass is delaminating and ghosting. Unfortunately my air conditioning was changing from air to heat on a day when the temperature outside was 95 degrees. This is definitely a safety issue. Trying to get the air conditioning back on, I took my eyes off the road to change and ran off the road.
The truck just stopped in the middle of the highway. I came to a red light when it turned green the car would not move. The emergency brake engaged and would not disengage to allow the car to be placed in neutral. All power was loss with no warning or check engine notification. Come to find out both batteries were bad. Having the vehicle only 4 months and no one wants to take responsibility for the repairs.
Tie rod snapped causing an accident.
On 8/16/2022 I was involved in an accident due to front driver side suspension breaking.
Vehicle seems to be consuming oil at a rapid pace. The vehicle does not leak oilt. I had to add over two quarts of oil on 8/16. This has happened between the last time I got the oil changed and the next scheduled oil change. The vehicle just suddenly stalled in traffic while driving with not warning. This has happened multiple times since we have owned it. No low oil notification alert. It is going in for service this evening. The dealer says there is not a recall on this VIN yet I am reading about a recall for this same oil consumption issue that we are having.
1. The car will stall while driving at highway speeds and/or will turn on the emergency brake after stopping due to a stop sign or traffic. Yes this is available for inspection. 2. Not as of yet, Jeep said it was a battery problem. 3. The vehicle has been inspected by Jeep. 4. There were no signs or symptoms of the problem prior to failure. It occurred from one day to another and has not stopped.
The vehicle’s touchscreen display has begun delaminating, causing “phantom touches” where the screen starts behaving erratically, as if someone were frantically touching multiple controls. This includes launching and closing apps, changing music, activating the phone and calling people, disabling/changing navigation, and more. There is no way to stop this once it starts, leaving the screen erratically changing and becoming extremely distracting while driving. This has nearly lead to several accidents on the road. This has happened several times since August of this year, growing progressively worse and more distracting over time. The system becomes effectively unusable and the degree of distraction when it occurs while on the road has only been increasing. This is a widely known issue with the Uconnect 8.4 model screens installed in Jeep, Dodge and other FAC marque vehicles. FAC refuses to do anything about it, as it tends to happen after the vehicles are past their standard warranty. I have attempted to communicate with them, however they refuse to help in any way and essentially have told me I’m on my own, much as they have with the thousands of others who have reported this issue with their Uconnect 8.4 systems. The issue is rooted in the adhesive used to hold the digitizer to the display, which begins to melt and seep down into the mounting brackets, separating the digitizer from the screen and forming what looks like air bubbles. FAC knows this, yet refuses to accept any responsibility.
Engine is consuming oil at an alarming rate. Not time for an oil change and have already had to add oil twice. Low oil pressure light comes on. No known leaks, engine is clean, no oil under hood. Based on other complaints this needs to be investigated!
