NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Windshield wipes are malfunctioning. They come on and function by themselves without the windshield wipers being activated. Purchased the car on 5/26/2025 and issue started on 6/1/25. Took the car to the dealership on 6/2/25 to check the problem out. They couldn’t mimic the problem. Car has been back and forth to the dealership 3x since 6/2/25 trying to figure out what the issue is.
Spontaneous deployment of driver seat head rest (without any collision or trauma to the vehicle that might make it deploy). Unable to safely operate my vehicle now that head rest safety function is defective.
I was stopped in traffic at approximately 16:00 on Tuesday 5/27/2025. All of the sudden the drivers side headrest deployed with force, hitting me in the back of my head and pushing my head and neck forward. Since the incident I am experiencing pain in my neck.
The contact owned a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 35 MPH, multiple warning lights illuminated. The contact noticed smoke emitting from under the hood. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and immediately exited the vehicle. The contact opened the hood and flames were visible. In addition, the electrical throttle illuminated, and the temperature gauge displayed it was hot. The fire extinguished on its own. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed and informed the contact that the wires were damaged by the fire up to the location where the starter was located. However, no cause for the fire was found. The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the vehicle was sabotaged. The vehicle had unknown electrical work completed on the vehicle. However, the vehicle failed to start. Most recently, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle's mileage was 224,495 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage on the title was 26,270. The insurance company was not notified. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 225,585.
Car unexpectedly shifted into neutral without me switching gears while driving.
Trunk lift gate opens on its own and continually opens and closes; removing the battery does not stop the automatic open/close and it will continue to do so for some time. It does it randomly, but more so after the car has gotten wet from a wash or rain. While sitting stationary the trunk opened on its own while locked and alarmed.
6 months ago, I was driving on the interstate and the ESC system light came on, the vehicle lost power/ability to accelerate, and would only allow acceleration after pulling over and restarting the car. This happened several more times on the interstate, and when the ESC system kicked in it would suddenly lurch the car down about 15 mph and leave no ability to accelerate, causing near collisions at high rates of speed. After eventually taking it to the dealership, it turned out to be failed lifters on the driver's side cam shaft, a known design issue that has apparently plagued the Pentastar engines. This all happened in spite of meticulous maintenance and no warning signs from the engine whatsoever. How is such a significant, known design defect that causes such dangerous driving conditions never been flagged for a recall?
Rear hatch leaking creating electrical fire hazard potential.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission independently shifted into neutral. The contact turned the vehicle off. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact's minor child was an occupant of the vehicle at the time of the failure. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed of an unknown recall repair with a similar failure; however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 119,604.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that after the vehicle was parked and turned off, the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to restart. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence and then later to the dealer, who determined that the engine oil was low, and the engine had overheated. The contact was informed that the long block needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,076.
A warning came on said, service shifter. The part alone is $1,600 I’m a widow and can’t afford this. Mechanic says it’s the electronic transmission module,it tells the transmission what gear to shift into. I read complaints that their Jeep will shift into N or other gears going down the highway. To me this is dangerous and hope you can help.
Vehicle will shut off while driving losing brakes and power steering. No lights on dash just says shift to park to start. Very dangerous
Noise possibly coming from the transfer case shifting into different gears. Four wheels lowe is not working, end movement and impact when accelerating and when slowing down. Sudden movements when turning right
The 3.6L engine has a misfire and that problem was addressed by replacing the following new plugs, coilpacks, injector, plenum gaskets and it ended up being the rocker arms or cam shaft This has to be address as it is a wide problem with EVERY one of these engines.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the tailgate was closed independently. The tailgate had crashed down and struck the contact on the head. The component in question is the rear drive shaft. It has been losing speed as I travel on roads and the highways. When accelerating from a stop sign or red light, the vehicle seems to not want to move. It takes a few seconds for the computer to realize the car is in motion. Once it picks up speed, there are three (3) knocks that occur. It makes the vehicle jerk hard and sway sometimes. The next component is the transfer case. It puts the four-wheel in progress to be shifted. The four-wheel drive makes a popping noise when the vehicle comes to a stop and is shut off. It continues to keep shifting from two-wheel to four-wheel to two-wheel without even using the controls. While pulling out from a car lot, I made a right turn. The vehicle acted as if it did not want to go, and the front end started jerking and making a popping noise. Also, when riding on the highway, the front end shakes terribly. My safety was at risk because the vehicle acts up while pulling into traffic or riding on the road. Sometimes, I have my grandkids in the vehicle with me. They are my most precious packages when they ride with me. The problem of the drive shaft has been confirmed by a dealerships service department, my mechanic, and the mechanics of the dealership I purchased the vehicle from. Has not been inspected by the police, insurance reps, or the manufacturers. There were times when the service message for the four-wheel drive came on. It was an issue trying to find a place to do the service.
I am reporting an unresolved safety recall issue on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee (VIN: [XXX] ). On February 1, 2025, I brought my vehicle to Chapman Dodge Chrysler Jeep (3470 Boulder Highway) after being informed that the driver’s seatbelt retractor was part of a safety recall and needed replacement. I was initially told the replacement part would arrive within 10 days. However, more than five months later, the seatbelt remains unrepaired. My wife and I have called the dealership multiple times—she called five times and I called once. Each time we were promised a follow-up call when the part arrived, but none was ever made. On June 9, the dealership told us a new part order had been placed 2–3 weeks earlier from a new supplier, and that the sales associate Armando (“Mondo”) would follow up. No update was provided to me directly. On July 9, we were told the part was ordered again and messages were left with Mondo to contact us, but as of today, no one has reached out. Throughout this process, I have felt dismissed and the safety of the non-functional seatbelt— which hangs limp and offers no protection—has not been prioritized. I never received an official recall notice from Jeep, and I am left with a vehicle unsafe to drive with no clear timeline for repair. I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in addressing this ongoing safety concern, as the dealership has failed to resolve the recall in a timely manner and the delay poses a significant risk. My truck was affected by the fuel pump recall brought it to the dealership to have it performed was told fuel pump was bad and contamination occurred was told they will repair the truck as part of the recall. 3 weeks later received a call truck was ready but gave a code for temp sensor that was not covered by recall had to pay $500 for the repair I authorized and was told part was out of stock for a week. after the part was installed i was told the car was ready all codes were cleared and car was good to go. Meanwhile the truck was not road tested after all the repairs were completed. I picked up the car friday 4:30pm went home and the truck lost power again and check engine light and lightning bolt came on. dealer was closed had to tow it to them for them to look at Monday. Got a call stating they retightened everything and told me to come get the car. Meanwhile car was not road tested again! picked up the truck and again after 50 miles same thing again check engine light and loss of power brought it back to the dealer and was told that need to do a cleaning of the engine but to drive the truck and see how it goes. took the truck went to work around 90 miles on the highway smoke starting coming into the cabin truck lost complete power and almost caught fire!! vehicle was in NY had it towed to the nearest station until we speak w dealer to arrange for it to be towed back to CT. Spoke w dealer next morning and was told they have an affiliated dealer in NY to have it towed there and they will look at it. Took it to Manhattan Jeep and was told the dpf sensor had melted and they needed to replace it. Part was on back order for a week. Had them replace it after replacing they told me the truck is still not running correct. Statting that the honeycomb in the dpf was broken and needed to be replaced along with the catalyst converter! all this was done due to the recall not being performed correctly!!! and not be road tested after replacing fuel pumps, fuel rail, fuel injec
While driving on the interstate suddenly my jeep switched gears I was able to put back in drive and pull over. After pulling over and jeep being put in park it wouldn’t go back into drive, after 3 attempts turning car off and back on again it finally shifted to drive. I was able to at least get home and put it in garage. It now will not go into reverse at all, I try frequently, this happened a few months ago, I also called and reported issue but was never told I had to get online and fill out a form etc. I can’t afford to pay for this big of a repair. It seems this issue has occurred on several 2014 jeeps. This was extremely scary and unsafe to say the least even more so with my kids in the car. I hope I can get this taken care of and finally have a vehicle again. Please email [XXX] or call me at [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Fuel spit back on refueling. Repeated attempts produced same result. Dealer said need to replace fuel tank due to check valve problem. Researched found this is continuous problem with Grand Cherokee and other jeep models for several years. Cost the replace tank us excessive.
While on highway, wipers, lights and horn began on their own. Then car shifted to neutral and brakes failed. I was going 70 miles per hour. I was able to get off the highway and have the car inspected by a licensed mechanic. It is the electrical computer or TIPM. The car is unable to start. This issue is a very dangerous safety issue.
The contact's wife owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while in stop-and-go traffic, several warning lights began to flash on the instrument panel and the vehicle started to lose power. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the starter was replaced. The contact stated that several months later, the contact stated that the "Service Shifter" warning light flashed on the instrument panel with the gear shifter lights flashing. The contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted into neutral(N) while driving at 40 MPH. The contact drove the vehicle back to the independent mechanic where the mechanic test drove the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that he had experienced the failure while driving over a bump in the roadway and several warning lights flashed on the instrument panel. The contact was informed that the failure might be related to the electrical system and that the vehicle was unsafe to be driven. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 165,000.
Without incident or warning, front passenger seatbelt will not retract, pull out or lock when jerked. Inspected 1/13/25 by Capital CDJR, Garner,NC 919-582-0202, found to require replacement per Mopar Warranty Bulletin#D-21-04 dated 3-24-2021. Service Advisor and Parts stated that seatbelt is on NATIONAL BACKORDER, can't be ordered and no ETA can be provided, although my name was added to "the list." Please note that this Warranty Bulletin was published FOUR YEARS AGO, yet parts remain unavailable. Online research indicates this safety failure was investigated by NHTSA and caused Mopar to extend seatbelt warranty coverage. Without replacement parts sourcing, without ability to order, without an ETA, the situation still exists without resolution. When will this become a priority? Thank you.
I already complained before about the engine overheating in the car not being able to start so it took the car over to authorized dealership to where I could have my oil change done and the dealer noticed that there is engine oil that has mixed in to my coolant reservoir and that now I might have a blown head gasket after contacting several different dealerships about the recall they informed me that everything happened fixed on my vehicle which I have not been aware of since I've had the vehicle everything that's been repaired has been out of my own pocket and expenses the recall is for a EGR cooler which is the same recall that I've complained about numerous times I'm not able to drive the vehicle and I'm looking at repairs of anywhere to four to $10,000 now to replace my whole engine
The car will randomly throw itself into neutral and i will completely lose all power. got a diagnostics done and it is the transmission control module. the part is currently on back order because so many cars are having the same issue as mine.
The driver side Active Head Restraint unexpectedly deployed while driving the vehicle.
When I accelerate the fuel pedal to the floor the more it cuts out it did that before the recall on the high pressure fuel pump and it's doing it after supposedly it was replaced. The dealership replaced injectors, fuel rails, fuel filters, all new tubing kit, and most important high pressure fuel pump, upon inspection the dealership only replaced High fuel pressure pump and did not perform the work this is the second time I informed you about this issue. I am so highly concerned not only from my safety but safety of others if they've done this to me the dealership will do it to anyone. I hired an attorney to investigate until these illegal activities and I will be going in front of the Attorney General on this matter. I have a highly concerned issue with this vehicle the admissions is terrible the soot that goes into that engine it's ruining it at 138,000 miles my biggest issue is the exhaust gets in the vehicle with all the windows shut and I get sick on that DEF fluid that burns out the exhaust somehow someway it's getting in the vehicle and it's getting me sick I've already brought this to the attention of the manufacturer and he said the motors are junk and they should be recalled immediately this is my second complaint and no results
Sometimes when i put my Suv in reverse or on drive it make a fully stop and returns to parking.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, oil was leaking from the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that a mobile mechanic diagnosed the vehicle at the residence and determined that the oil housing unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the oil housing unit had failed again and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. While driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a loud ticking sound coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the rocker arm, piston, and camshaft had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.
While traveling at freeway speeds the engine suddenly died. The vehicle was taken to an independent shop where they confirmed the cause was a connecting rod failure. They commented this is a common failure in the 2014-2016 Jeep grand Cherokee eco diesels along with the same model year dodge ram 1500s. There was no warning signs of this issue and the independent shop stated they have not been able to find a root cause as similar to our case the engine had plenty of oil in it to prevent this issue. During this event I also reviewed the engine temp and oil temps all were well within the normal operating temps. This put others and my own life at risk as we lost complete power. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch and in the far lane so I was able to safely coast to a stop. This could lead to a very different outcome. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance agents as it’s been claimed this is not a covered component under previous FCA extended warranties for a faulty emission system.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the contact became aware that the vehicle was leaking oil. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stationary, the vehicle started to leak coolant. The coolant level warning light was illuminated with an audible chime. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and the dealer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the low-voltage battery warning light illuminated and white smoke exited from under the hood compartment. The contact stated that the failure occurred directly as he arrived at his residence. The contact parked the vehicle and opened the hood. The contact noticed a crackling sound. The contact used the water hose and sprayed the engine down. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed coolant pump and an unknown belt. The contact was informed that the coolant pump and the unknown belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure reoccurred. The check engine warning light illuminated, and white smoke exited from under the hood compartment. The contact parked the vehicle and opened the hood. The contact noticed that the alternator was fire-red. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, however, the vehicle had not been diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
My car didn’t move i would put drive and it would park and i would try driving and it didn’t move then it would move and stop again
The car keeps overheating. I received warning lights for the sensors to check the no flow indicator. In August I took to a mechanic and paid 1200 to have a hose repair for the cooling system. Lights went out for 4 days and problems again causing the car to completely shut off on my way home and I live in Volcano ca mountains no phone service and was stuck until morning. The car just says no flow wipe sensors. No car does not start without overheating quickly
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the fan was running excessively. The contact stated that the engine and coolant warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the failure was caused by the thermostat. The thermostat was replaced, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, who determined that cause of the failure was caused by the thermostat again. The thermostat was replaced again. The contact stated that several days later the engine and coolant warning lights became illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that the failure was due to the starter and the engine. The mechanic informed the contact that the engine and starter needed to be replaced. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 185,000.
SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT, CAR NOT GOING INTO GEARS.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and making a turn, the rear wheels suddenly locked. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transfer case had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer determined that the failure was related to an unknown recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 167,000.
The seat belt does not retract as it should. I have already had it replaced once and I have a second that is failing now. We have not been in an accident to see if it is a problem with restraining you as a driver, but it is a point of concern. The dealer replaced the first one, right after we purchased the vehicle, and it is exhibiting similar symptoms now of not retracting after unbuckled. You can manually align it to get it to feed back, but this doesn't seem to be the correct way to handle this.
The seat belt on the driver’s side of my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo has a cracked plastic guide, which has caused the seat belt to stop retracting properly. This malfunction compromises the functionality of the seat belt, making it unsafe for use and posing a serious risk in the event of an accident. I am currently pregnant and rely on this vehicle for daily transportation, so this issue puts both my safety and the safety of my unborn child at risk. I have contacted the dealership and confirmed there are no active recalls for my vehicle. However, this appears to be a manufacturing defect, as other vehicles of the same year and model have reportedly experienced similar issues. The problem has persisted, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This problem I noticed recently, and don't recall the exact date.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH from a complete stop, the vehicle decelerated unintendedly to 45 MPH. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal, and the vehicle responded as needed. The contact stated that the failure recurred intermittently while driving at various speeds. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Christian Brothers Automotive to be diagnosed; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed coolant leaking from the radiator, with the engine coolant warning illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.
The driver's side active head restraint deployed without warning striking me in the back of the head, fortunately not hard enough to seriously injure me, but hard enough to cause a headache. I had just gotten into the vehicle to drive to work, so it wasn't even moving. There are broken pieces of plastic that apparently used to hold it closed. My vehicle has no uncompleted recalls, but now looking at my vehicle information online I've discovered that there was a "warranty extension" in 2020 regarding a possible failure exactly like this, and I've also discovered there were lawsuits following reports of injuries! Chrysler never notified me, nor did the Jeep dealer bring it to my attention during any of my routine service appointments. Why wasn't this a RECALL requiring repair instead of left to be a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off??? Adding insult to injury, the warranty extension to 10 years after the in-service date in 2013 doesn't cover repairs today! The passenger side restraint hasn't popped open (yet!) but I'm not stupid enough to wait until it fails and injures a family member, so now I have to replace BOTH sides and PAY for both out of my pocket. Please make this a RECALL so Chrysler will have even a slight urgency to notify owners, and hopefully decide to replace the head rests immediately, regardless of how old they are.
The Jeep has had major issues with the fuel system. The first reported issue is during the fill the filler would click like it was full when it was in the beginning stages of the fill. It ended up soaking me with gasoline and shutting down a gas station for spill. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and the Vermont Attorney General because the dealerships were not fixing the problem. The fuel tank was finally repaired when the Attorney General got involved. 2024 the Jeep is again having issues with the fuel system. When the tank is filled to capacity it creates gasoline fumes so strong that it infiltrates the cabin and can be detected from the parking lot. It is really scary to keep having issues with the fuel system. I am shocked after reading on the internet so many Jeep owners with fuel system issues that the vehicles are not on recall. I want to report this because it is a safety issue.
The headrest on the drivers seat came apart. We have been unable to get it back together. Car was at rest in a parking lot and very luckily was not being driven at the time. This would be extremely dangerous if the car was being driven when this happened
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited started to shudder when accelerating, roughly into to 2nd/3rd gear, but would stop if pedal was lifted then would shift normally. In about a weeks time, the engine light came on and the vehicle would not shift gears at all while the car was in motion. Would have to pull over immediately, restart vehicle, then shifting would be fine and light went off. Could not reproduce. 3 days later, vehicle shifted into neutral multiple times during one trip of approx 10 miles with each time requiring a restart. Engine light has stayed on, dealership has been contacted.
