0800 AM OWNER DROVE VEHICLE APPROX 6 MILES WITH HEATER ON, RETURNING HOME AND PARKING VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND TURNING OFF ENGINE. OWNER EXITED THE VEHICLE AND ENTERED THE RESIDENCE. DRIVER NOTED A SMELL OF BURNING OIL DURING USE OF THE 6 MILE TRIP. APPROX 15 MINUTES LATER A NEIGHBOR ALERTED OWNER THAT VEHICLE WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. FIRE DEPARTMENT POINT OF ORIGIN INSPECTION STATES FIRE WAS IN INTERIOR UNDER DASH PANEL FIREWALL.
THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON MY DASHBOARD CONTINUOUSLY GOES ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALERSHIP, TEMPE JEEP IN ARIZONA,ON 10/04/2012 AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. THEY ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECORD OF THE INCIDENTS IN THE TRUCK'S COMPUTER SYSTEM. I KNOW A RECALL EXISTS FOR 2002 JEEP LIBERTY'S, BUT ACCORDING TO THE DEALER MY VIN IS NOT WITHIN THE RECALL. *TR

AIRBAG LIGHT TURNS AND DOES NOT DISAPPEAR UNLESS I TURN THE ENGINE OFF, WAIT A MINUTE, AND TURN BACK ON THEN AIRBAG LIGHT DISAPPEARS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL DETACHED FROM THE AXLE. THE CONTACT DID NOT CRASH OR LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT WAS DEFECTIVE AND CAUSED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE TO DISCONNECT FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN I.D. 09V119000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM) AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND REPLACED THE LOWER BALL JOINTS OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NEVER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
JUST PURCHASED VEHICLE, TOLD BY LOCAL DEALER IN EARLY JULY THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON LOWER BALL JOINTS, WITH A NATIONAL BACK ORDER ON PARTS, AFTER COMPLETING REPAIR 9/24, THEY STATED IT NEEDS NEW STEERING KNUCKLES AT $1094.00. ON TUESDAY 9/25 SAID IT WAS READY TO PICK UP, I ASKED IF THEY SOLVED THE "AIR BAG" LIGHT BEING ON, THEY SAID IT WOULD BE A FEW MORE DAYS. THEY CALLED THIS MORNING (9/28) AND SAID THEY CAN NOT GIVE ME THE VEHICLE BACK BECAUSE THE BALL JOINTS ARE NOW FALLING OUT. I ASKED "SINCE I DROVE IT IN, WHY AFTER YOU RECALL REPAIR IS IT NOT DRIVE ABLE? THEY SAID SAFETY REASONS. SO NOW I HAVE A JEEP BEING HELD HOSTAGE, WITH STILL NO ANSWER FOR THE "AIR BAG" LIGHT TO BE ON. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THESE MODELS. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FAILURE UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V527000 (AIR BAGS) BUT THE CONTACT'S VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000.
JEEP STARTED MISSING AND STALLED AS I WAS DRIVING. LOST BREAK PRESSURE AND STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THANK GOODNESS I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. AFTER BEING TOWED TO A MECHANIC, HE TOLD ME THE VALUES WHERE DONE AND THE MOTOR WAS SHOT. I HAVE SINCE LOOKED UP THE PROBLEM ON THE WEB AND HAVE FOUND THAT MOST 2002 JEEP LIBERTY'S HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, REPEATEDLY, ONE GUY IS ON HIS FOURTH MOTOR. SPOKE TO THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER WHO ACTED LIKE I SPOKE A FOREIGN LANGUAGE, NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM. THIS IS THE COMPANY WE JUST BAILED OUT WITH TAXPAYER DOLLARS, CORRECT! I AM AT A LOSS, CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX IT NOR BUY A NEW VEHICLE. PLEASE PUT SOME PRESSURE ON CHRYSLER TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE, WE ADDRESSED THEIRS. *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS NO ACCIDENTS AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT IMPACT ANY OTHER OBJECT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD SEND OUT AN INVESTIGATOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
OUR 2002 JEEP LIBERTY HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAG SYSTEM OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE FOR THE PAST 8 MONTHS. WE RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL M35/NHTSA 12V-527 FOR THIS PROBLEM FEB.2, 2013. THIS RECALL PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. *TR

HEADLIGHTS FLASH ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. HEAR A CLICKING/FLICKERING SOUND ON DASHBOARD WHEN IT HAPPENS. HAPPENS FAST--FLICKER OFF AND THEN BACK ON WITHIN A COUPLE OF SECONDS. *TR
I HAVE HAD MY JEEP LIBERTY FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS NO MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH IT UNTIL THIS PAST AUGUST. I'VE CHANGED THE OIL IN IT EVERY 3,000 MILES, AND MAINTAINED MY JEEP VERY, VERY WELL. ONE DAY I STARTED THE CAR, WAS DRIVING AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AND I HEARD A LOUD "KNOCKING" SOUND FROM THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND WHEN I CHECKED THE CODE IT READ AS THE KNOCK SENSOR. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS DONE, THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ENGINE TO FIX THE PROBLEM, AND THAT HE HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM WITH LIBERTY'S SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE! I'VE CHECKED NUMEROUS HELP WEBSITES AND JEEP FORUMS AND IT CONFIRMED THAT I WAS NOT THE ONLY LIBERTY OWNER WITH THIS PROBLEM, BUT YET CHRYSLER HASN'T DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT! BUYING A NEW ENGINE FOR A CAR IS NOT CHEAP, AND IT ISN'T SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD PAY OUT OF POCKET WHEN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER REPORTS OF BAD LIBERTY ENGINES. THIS NEEDS TO BE RESEARCHED AND TAKEN CARE OF PROMPTLY! *TR
MY DAUGHTER BOUGHT A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY 1 MONTH AGO. WE CHANGED THE OIL AND I HAD HER CHECK IT EVERY TWO WEEKS SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW TO HER. SHE DID AS I SAID FOR A COUPLE WEEKS AND SAID IT USED NONE. SHE IS VERY DILIGENT AT WATCHING HER MILEAGE TO PLAN OIL CHANGES EVERY 3000 MILES. SHE WENT TO WORK AND THE ENGINE STARTED TO KNOCK. SHE CHECKED THE OIL AND FOUND IT 3 QUARTS LOW AND GOT NO LOW OIL WARNING. WE TOOK IT TO A SHOP AND IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. WE FOUND OUT NO REPUTABLE SALVAGE YARD WANTS TO SELL THE ENGINE DUE TO A KNOWN OIL GEAR ISSUE, SO THEY WILL NOT EVEN WARRANTY ONE WITH LOW MILES. A REBUILT MOTOR WITH THE OIL GEAR ISSUE FIXED COSTS $3200.00. WITH LABOR MY DAUGHTER IS LOOKING AT $4500.00 TO REPLACE AN ENGINE WITH ONLY 119000 MILES. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET ON 2002 JEEP LIBERTY 3.7 ENGINE. I FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE BLOWN MOTOR. THE AVERAGE SEEMS TO BE 96000 MILES. MANY PEOPLE ONLINE SAID THEY CONTACTED JEEP AND THEY SAID THEY WERE SOL. I DON'T EXPECT A NEW ENGINE FOR NOTHING, BUT WHEN THE AVERAGE VEHICLE TODAY DOES 250000 MILES BY MOST MANUFACTURERS AND TOYOTA IS AT 400000. THE ENGINE IS BLOWN BECAUSE THE VALVE ISSUE THAT CHRYSLER IS VERY WELL AWARE OF. REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND PROPER OIL CHANGES TOOK PLACE. THE ENGINE THEY PUT IN THIS VEHICLE IS KNOWN FOR THIS ISSUE. THE VALVE BREAKS OFF AND DESTROYS THE ENGINE. THANKS GUYS. WAY TO OWN UP AND FIX YOUR MISTAKES. *TR

THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A MILD CONCUSSION AND THREE FRACTURED RIBS. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED WHIP LASH, A BRUISED NECK AND BRUISED SPINAL CORD. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 146,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR AN ALIGNMENT, WHO NOTIFIED HIM THAT THE UPPER BALL JOINT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V288000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 142,000.

THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING, IT STARTED ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO. THIS JUST HAPPENS AT RANDOM ITS ON FOR 50 SECONDS THEN GOES OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN AND THEN OFF AND SOMETIMES IT DOES THIS FOR AWHILE AND SOME TIMES JUST A FEW TIMES AND THEN DOESN'T DO IT AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. THIS HAPPENS AT ANY SPEED THE CAR IS GOING. IT'S JUST TOTALLY RANDOM. *TR
UPON STARTING THE JEEP, THE AIR BAG LIGHT WENT OFF THEN CAME BACK ON AND STAYED ON UNTIL THE JEEP WAS TURNED OFF. THIS WAS A SHORT 10 MINUTE TRIP - MAYBE 5 MILES. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN THE NEXT DAY (TODAY). I MADE ONE OTHER TRIP IN BETWEEN WHERE THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. OCCASIONALLY THE OVERHEAD LIGHTS WILL FLASH ON/OFF AS WELL. I HAD THE BATTERY HARNESS REPLACED WITHIN THE LAST YEAR. NOT SURE IF THAT IS RELATED OR NOT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME AND NOTICED MY WINDOW FOR NO REASON FELL DOWN. THE JEEP WAS BOUGHT NEW BY US IN 2002. THE BACK SEATS OR WINDOWS HAVE BEEN RARELY USED. WE USE AIR AND HEAT, SO WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DRIVER'S WINDOW, WE HAVE HARDLY ROLLED DOWN THE OTHER WINDOWS. I DID RESEARCH ABOUT THE FALLING DOWN ON THE JEEP WINDOWS. I LEARNED CHRYSLER KNEW SINCE 2002 ABOUT THE DEFECTIVE WINDOWS. THEY FINALLY RECALLED BACK SOME OF THE 2006 AND 2007 JEEPS. I CALLED THEM AND THEY DO NOT SEEM CONCERNED ABOUT THE DANGER THIS COULD CAUSE. I FEEL BECAUSE OF THE LITTLE USE OF THE WINDOW IS WHY WE HAVE NOT HAD THE PROBLEMS SEVERAL HAVE HAD. THEY THEN PROCEED TO CHARGE YOU $500. TO REPAIR THE WINDOW WITH THE SAME KIND OF PART THAT WILL BREAK AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL PEOPLE. I ASKED CHRYSLER ABOUT THIS PART, THEY CONFESS JUST RECENTLY THEY HAVE CHANGED THE PART TO WORK. I SEE THE DANGER THIS COULD BE IF HAULING A YOUNG CHILD. EVEN THOUGH A CHILD IS TO BE IN A CHILD SEAT, THEY SOMETIMES CAN GET OUT. IF DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE WINDOW JUST DROPS, A CHILD COULD FALL OUT. IN A WRECK THIS COULD ENDANGER ANYONE. ALL THE WINDOWS IN THE JEEP HAVE A PROBLEM OF BREAKING FOR NO REASON, BUT MOSTLY THE BACK WINDOWS. CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THIS AND SHOULD HAVE RECALLED ALL THESE WINDOWS. THEY ARE BLEEDING THE JEEP OWNERS BY HAVING TO CONTINUE TO REPAIR THE DEFECTIVE WINDOWS AND ARE ENDANGERING PEOPLE'S LIFE. THEY SHOULD BE MADE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT THEY KNEW THEY HAD AND CONTINUED TO USE. *TR
WHERE TO BEGIN? MY AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN COMING ON FOR MONTHS WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK IT TO A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP 6 MONTHS AGO & WAS CHARGED $100 FOR THEM TO TELL ME THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG. ABOUT A MONTH AGO, WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT, CAME BACK ON, WENT OUT AGAIN, AND FINALLY I HIT MY HIGH BEAMS AND THEY STAYED ON. MY ENGINE USES ABOUT 2 QUARTS OF OIL PER WEEK. I HAVE PARKED ON CLEAN SURFACES & THERE IS NO OIL LEAKING, BUT IT IS GOING SOMEWHERE. I CAN HEAR A TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AREA. I CALLED CHRYSLER'S TOLL-FREE NUMBER TODAY AFTER THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT AGAIN, AND WAS INFORMED THAT MY JEEP IS UNDER RECALL FOR THE AIR BAG MODULE, AND MAYBE THAT IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE LIGHTS TO GO OUT. THIS MAKES NO SENSE TO ME THAT ONE WOULD HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHER. I TOLD THEM THAT I HAVE SEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS, BUT THEY STATED THAT THEY'VE HAD NO COMPLAINTS. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED FRONT TIRES THREE TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR FOR WEAR ON THE OUTSIDE EDGE. I'VE HAD THE JEEP ALIGNED, TIRES ROTATED AS THEY SHOULD BE, AND THEY JUST KEEP BALDING ON THE OUTER EDGE. THE SERVICE TECH SAID THAT JEEPS EAT THROUGH TIRES BECAUSE OF THE WHEEL BASE? THIS CAR HAS ALL BUT EATEN UP MOST OF MY INCOME. IT IS CONSTANTLY HAVING ISSUES, AND I GET NOWHERE WITH CHRYSLER. *TR

THE DEALER STATED PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V288000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT). THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE VEHICLE STARTED TO MAKE A POPPING SOUND AND THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SWERVE TO THE LEFT. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE DROPPED TO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL COULD NOT BE TURNED IN ANY DIRECTION. THE CONTACT SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
FAST TRAVELING TRUCK PASSED ME AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT WENT ON. NOW IT KEEPS ON GOING ON FOR 5 SECONDS AND THEN SHUTS OFF. IT DOES THIS AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ACCELERATING FROM A STOP LIGHT WHEN THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD AND CAUSED THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 133,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 136,000.
WHEN I WENT TO TURN MY CAR ON YESTERDAY IT WOULD TURN BUT WOULD NOT TURN THE CAR ON. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND STILL IT WOULD NOT TURN ON. AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE IGNITION SWITCH DISCOVERED A SING BROKE PART BEFORE THE TUMBLER. IN ORDER TO REPAIR THIS, THE ENTIRE STEERING COLLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE TRIED WITH NO SUCCESS TO GET THE AIRBAG RECALL ISSUE WITH MY DAUGHTERS 2002 JEEP LIBERTY ADDRESSED BY THE LOCAL DEALERS IN THE HOUSTON AREA. FAILED THERMOSTAT HOUSING AT 94,000 MILES. THERMOSTAT HOUSING DID NOT OPEN FOR COOLANT TO PASS CAUSING EXTENSIVE ENGINE DAMAGE TO HEAD GASKETS AND PISTONS WITH 7K DAMAGE . DRIVING THROUGH A SCHOOL ZONE ONE MORNING AND THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER STEERING AND SHUT OFF, WOULD NOT START AGAIN. TOWED IT BACK TO HOUSE AND READ CHECK ENGINE CODE ABOUT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. IT MELTED IN PLACE BECAUSE OF WHERE IT IS IN RELATION TO THE EXHAUST, TOOK 4-5 MONTHS TO FULLY DIG OUT THE MELTED SENSOR AND REPLACE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
