TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER 12V527000 (AIR BAGS) EXCEEDED A REASONABLE TIME TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS AFRAID THAT THE AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR REPAIR AND THEY DID NOT KNOW WHEN THE PART WAS GOING TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,000.
TL- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER WAS TRAVELING 35 MPH AND CRASHED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CRASH CAUSED HEAD, NECK AND BACK INJURIES TO THE DRIVER, THE FRONT AND THE REAR PASSENGER. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 102,000. KMJ
THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY. CHECKED INTERNET FOR POSSIBLE CAUSES, AND SAW NHTSA INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY DUE TO RANDOM AIR BAG DEPLOYMENTS ON 2002-2003 JEEP LIBERTY DUE TO POSSIBLE DEFECTIVE ELECTRONIC COMPONENT. INTERMITTENT AIR BAG LIGHT IS ASSOCIATED WITH RANDOM AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT IN SOME CASES. INTERMITTENT AIR BAG LIGHT APPEARS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH HEAT, AS LIGHT HAS ILLUMINATED ONLY AFTER WARM UP ON WARM (ABOVE 70) DAYS, AND DOES NOT ILLUMINATE IF IT IS COOL (60 OR BELOW) OR IF IT RAINS. CONTACTED CHRYSLER CORPORATE, THEY SUGGESTED I CONTACT DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIPS WANTS $100 JUST TO ATTEMPT DIAGNOSIS OF ISSUE, AND NEITHER JEEP CORPORATE NOR TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR PRODUCT. ONE DEALERSHIP VERY VOCAL ABOUT BEING CONCERNED WITH GETTING PAID DIAGNOSIS FEE, EITHER BY ME OR BY CHRYSLER CORPORATE IF RECALL INITIATED. VEHICLE HAS BEEN VERY TROUBLE-PRONE, WITH SEVERAL RECALLS TO DATE, ALONG WITH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF OWNER PAID-FOR REPAIRS IN ADDITION TO RECALLS, WITH BOTH REPAIRS AND RECALLS WELL ABOVE AVERAGE. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY AIR BAG EXPLODED AND MY SEAT BELT LOCKED UP. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT AND GET OUT OF THE HEAVY TRAFFIC, BUT I EXPERIENCED BURNS AND CONTUSIONS ON MY ARMS AND CHEST WHEN THE BAG DEPLOYED. ON 3-16-12, SPEEDOMETER, HEADLIGHTS, POWER LOCKS STOP FUNCTIONING. THE CAR TURN OFF ON ITS OWN. AIRBAG SIGNAL COME ON AND OFF. CHECKED ALL FUSES AND THERE IS NO PROBLEM THERE. CONNECTED IT TO AN OBDII READER AND NOTHING IF FOUND. *TR

THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HE PARTS NEEDED FOR THE RECALL WERE NOT AVAILABLE AND COULD NOT ADVISE THE CONTACT OF WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING PARTS FOR THE RECALL AND THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 JEEP LIBERTY, THE HIGH BEAM LIGHTS CLICK ON AND OFF AUTOMATICALLY FOR A FEW SECONDS. THIS HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES ON DIFFERENT DATES. NOW RECENTLY I WAS GOING AROUND A CORNER AND MY INTERIOR LIGHTS CAME ON, THEN SHUT OFF. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V046000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER, THE PART NEEDED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. ENGINE FAILED BLOWING A CYLINDER AND A HALF DURING NORMAL USE OF THE VEHICLE AND I WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC IT WOULD COST $5,000.00 FOR A NEW ONE. BOUGHT THE CAR USED AND HAVE 84,000 MILES ON IT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE FAILURE OCCURRED THREE TIMES. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. I BOUGHT MY 2002 JEEP LIBERTY USED WITH 99000 MILES AT 105000 THE ENGINE BLEW WITH NO WARNING. I WISH I WOULD HAVE LOOKED INTO THE COMPLAINTS FIRST NEVER WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A JEEP. OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS THAT ARE THE SAME. THE 3.7L ENGINE IS JUNK COME ON JEEP DO SOMETHING TO HELP WITH THIS $4000 COST OF REPLACING AN ENGINE. *TR
AFTER LOTS OF TRIES AND NO HELP FROM JEEP, I AM TRYING TO FIND HELP WITH A PROBLEM WITH AN SPEED SENSOR THAT IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. APPARENTLY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ROUTING OF THESE WIRES CAUSING THEM TO RUB, SHORT OUT AND IT CAUSES THE SENSOR TO QUIT, AND ANYTHING OPTIONS RUNNING OFF THIS SENSOR (EXAMPLE TRANNY SHIFT POINTS CAUSING THE TORQUE CONVERTER TO NOT UNLOCK AND CAUSING STALLING OF VEHICLE). *TR

MY JEEP HAS BEEN UNDER RECALL FOR THE AIRBAGS SINCE THE NOTICE HAS COME OUT AND I HAVE YET TO GET IT FIXED. MY AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AND GOES OFF WHEN BEING DRIVEN. THIS NOTICE WAS SENT IN JAN. 2013 AND HERE IT IS SIX MONTHS LATER AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. FOR SOME REASON THE MAKER SEEMS TO BE GIVING ME THE RUN AROUND ON PARTS. THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF FOR UP TO 2 SECONDS WHILE I AM DRIVING. THE PATTERN SEEMS TO OCCUR AT ALL DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND MAY OR MAY NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH USING THE TURNING SIGNALS OR THE ACT OF TURNING. I TRIED REPLACING THE HEADLIGHT RELAY, AND THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE, AND I WORRY THAT IT WILL GET SO BAD I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. I CURRENTLY SUSPECT A PROBLEM WITH THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH OR SIMPLY A LOOSE WIRE SOMEWHERE. ON ONE OCCASION, MY INTERIOR LIGHTS TURNED ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY AT NIGHT AND NOT TOUCHING THE MULTIFUNCTION STALK AT ALL-NOT SURE IF THAT IS RELATED, AND AGAIN, IT ONLY HAPPENED ONCE. THE UNINTENDED MALFUNCTION OCCURRED WITHOUT ANY IMPACT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. LEFT FRONT TIRE FELL TO THE SIDE. BALL JOINT WAS BROKEN. STEERING WAS IMPOSSIBLE. VEHICLE CONTAINED MALE AND FEMALE PARENTS AND TWO YOUNG CHILDREN. THEY WERE ON A BUSY FREEWAY IN NORTHERN CA. WHEN AUTO REPAIR PEOPLE LOOKED AT IT THEY FOUND NO GREASE IN THE JOINT AND THE BALL HAD RUST ALL OVER THE TOP. THIS IS A SEALED JOINT THAT COULD NOT BE GREASED. IT LOOKED AS THOUGH IS WAS NOT PROPERLY GREASED DURING ORIGINAL INSTALLATION. *TR

THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V288000 ( SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT) BUT WAS ADVISED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
AIR BAG LIGHT IS COMING ON RANDOMLY. NO PATTERN OF ANY KIND. *TR
THE WHEEL LUG BOLTS, ALL FIVE, ON THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL HAVE SHEARED OFF AT THE WHEEL HUB. I HAVE THREE OF THE LUG BOLTS (FOR METALLUGICAL ANALYSIS) AND PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE POSITION AT THE TIME OF FAILURE. APPARENTLY TWO OF THE OTHER LUG BOLTS HAD FAILED EARLIER AND DROPPED FROM THE VEHICLE. HAD THIS FINAL FAILURE OCCURRED AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED THAN 1 MPH, THE RESULTS WOULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS. I DO NOT FEEL THAT A FAILURE SUCH AS THIS IS NORMAL FOR ~114,000 MILES ON A 10 YEAR OLD VEHICLE AND SUSPECT THAT IT MAY BE THE RESULT OF SUBSTANDARD MATERIAL. I HAVE ELECTRONIC PICTURES THAT I CAN SUBMIT. *KB
WITHOUT WARNING, THE JEEP STALLED AND HAS CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. THE ENGINE IS NOT SALVAGEABLE AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS OR OIL PRESSURE WARNINGS. THE OIL IS CHANGED REGULARLY AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. *TR

AUGUST 08, BOUGHT MY 02 LIBERTY. TOOK ABOUT 1.5 YEARS TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE OF AN ACCIDENT - THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT THE LIBERTY. ABOUT 1 YEAR LATER THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE WENT OUT, HAD TO REPLACE IT. THERE'S BEEN OTHER, MINOR THINGS, LIKE WHEN ACCELERATING, FEELS LIKE SOMEONE BUMPED INTO ME. SOMETIMES ARE WORSE THAN OTHERS. OFTEN FEEL A "VIBRATION." WITHIN MONTHS OF BEING 1 YEAR OF REPLACING THE IAV, BEGAN TO GET EXTREMELY BAD GAS MILEAGE - ABOUT 187M TO A TANK. NOT SURE WHY. REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS, DID A LOF, INSPECTION, ETC.. ALMOST EXACTLY 1 YEAR FROM REPLACING THE IAV, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WAS ON FOR 1-1.5 DAYS. I DECIDED NOT USE IT UNTIL I COULD GET IT TO THE MECHANIC. NEXT MORNING, WAS GOING TO THE STORE & THE LIGHT WAS OFF! BUT WHEN I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE, IT DIED. THIS SORT OF THINGS HAPPENED BEFORE, DB CLUSTER BEING "FAULTY." OTHER THINGS [VACUUM SEAL LEAK, ETC] NEVER PROMPTED THE LIGHTS ON. HAD TO REPLACE THE IAV AGAIN & IT RAN FINE. RECENTLY, BEEN GETTING THAT "KICKING" FEELING & LIKE MY CAR IS RUNNING "ROUGH". TODAY, I NOTICED THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS STUCK ON. CHECKED THE MANUAL, IT SAID TO HAVE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CHECKED. I WAS NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING - HAD AN ODD FEELING THE AIRBAG WOULD DEPLOY - MOVED MY SEAT BACK JUST IN CASE. SINCE THE ACCIDENT, I GET ANXIETY OVER THESE THINGS. LUCKILY, NO DEPLOYMENT. GOT IT HOME, TURNED IT OFF, WAITED, TURNED IT ON, WAITED A FEW SECONDS AND THE LIGHT TURNED OFF THIS TIME. WENT STRAIGHT TO MY COMPUTER ONLY TO FIND THESE RECALLS AND INVESTIGATIONS - ONE BEING THE STEERING - LAST WEEK HAD A NERVE-WRACKING EXPERIENCE, MY CAR BEGAN TO SWERVE TURNING LEFT ONTO THE FREEWAY, IT WAS RAINING, SO, I SLOWLY MERGED. WASN'T UNTIL IT STRAIGHTENED OUT THAT IT BEGAN TO SWERVE, ALMOST LIKE LOSING CONTROL, DIDN'T FEEL LIKE A "SLIP." BUT I JUST ASSUMED IT WAS. ALSO, THE SEAT BELTS DON'T SEEM TO STAY CLICK IN AT TIMES. *TR
CHRYSLER HAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE 2002 JEEP LIBERTY REGARDING THE UPPER CONTROL ARM FAILURE. THIS FAILURE IS DUE TO FAILURE OF THE BALL JOINT SEAL ALLOWING CONTAMINANTS TO EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE BALL JOINT TO FAIL. THE RECALL NOTICE #J17 RECALL ID# 09V119000 ONLY INCLUDES VEHICLES SUBJECT TO CORROSION FROM ROAD SALTS IN THE NORTHEAST. I OWN A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY AND HAVE NOTICED THAT BOTH THE JOINTS ON THE UPPER BALL JOINT OF THE CONTROL ARM HAVE FAILED (SPLIT) AND AS RESULT HAVE ALLOWED CONTAMINANTS TO ENTER THE BALL JOINT RESULTING IN ITS REPLACEMENT. I FEEL THESE VEHICLES NEED TO BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL NOTICE #J17 FOR THE SAME REASON. IT IS A "SAFETY ISSUE" AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING WORN. THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR IF THERE WASN'T THE RUBBER SEAL AROUND THE BALL JOINT WOULD NOT HAVE SPLIT. FOR THE SPLIT ON THE RUBBER BALL JOINT SEAL TO BE NOTICED, A PERSON HAS TO LOOK REALLY CLOSE AT IT. I NOTICED MINE BECAUSE I WAS CHANGING OUT MY FRONT BRAKE PADS AND DID A CLOSE UP INSPECTION. THIS IS OF CONCERN TO NOT ONLY ME, BUT I AM SURE A LOT OF THE OTHER JEEP LIBERTY OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THEIR VEHICLES FRONT END DROP OUT FROM UNDER THEM WHEN THEY WERE DRIVING. I LIVE IN GEORGIA AND DO TRAVEL TO THE NORTHEAST FROM TIME TO TIME AND ALSO TRAVEL SOUTH TO FLORIDA FROM TIME TO TIME. MY CONCERN IS THIS: BOTH SEALS FAILED ON THE BALL JOINTS. BOTH BALL JOINTS ARE SUBJECTED TO ELEMENTS SIMILAR TO THOSE OF THE VEHICLES IN THE NORTHEAST EVEN MORE SO WHILE ALONG THE COAST OF FLORIDA. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS BALL JOINT FAILURES ON JEEP LIBERTIES IN GEORGIA AND FLA FOR THE SAME REASON THERE HAVE BEEN BALL JOINT FAILURES ON JEEP LIBERTIES IN THE NORTHEAST. AIR BAG LIGHT KEEPS BLINKING OFF AND ON, AFRAID IT MAY DEPLOY WHILE DRIVING. AFTER 2 CALLS TO CHRYSLER SINCE JANUARY STILL NO PARTS TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. *TR
CAUSE: SEAT GOT LOOSE GOT JAMMED IN THE VALVE AND BUSTED THE PISTON, EFFECT: ENGINE CHOKES OUT. WONT IDLE. MISFIRES. PULLED NO CODES. I HAVE FOUND THIS AND BROKEN VALVE SPRINGS ARE AN EXTREMELY COMMON FLAW IN JEEPS 2002-5. IN 2006 CHRYSLER CHANGED THE INTAKE PARTS FOR IT AND NEVER NOTIFIED THE PUBLIC AS TO THE REASON. THE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE LISTED AS BEING ABLE TO BE BOUGHT REBUILT OR NEW, HOWEVER YOU CANNOT FIND ANY REBUILT ONES. REASON BEING YOU WOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BECAUSE ITS DEFECTIVE. I WAS LEAVING WORK, AND DROVE OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY ONTO THE ROAD. THE CAR STARTED A DRAGGING SOUND AND I COULD NOT GO, SO I STOPPED AND GOT OUT TO SEE THAT MY FRONT DRIVERS TIRE WAS SITTING SIDEWAYS. IT HAD BROKE AWAY FROM THE CONTROL ARM. I WAS LUCKY TO HAVE AAA, BUT WHEN HE CAME, HE WAS NOT EVEN SURE IF HE COULD GET IT LOADED ON THE FLATBED. HE DID THOUGH SOMEHOW. THE NEXT MORNING I LOOKED ONLINE TO CHECK FOR RECALLS ON THESE CONTROL ARMS. THERE WAS ONE LISTED FOR MY STATE FOR THE CONTROL ARMS. IT WAS FOR ABOUT 42,000 JEEP LIBERTY'S (2002-2003) MODELS. I CALLED DAIMLER CHRYSLER AND ASKED WHY I DID NOT GET A RECALL NOTICE AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THE RECALL DID NOT INCLUDE MY VIN NUMBER. WELL IT SHOULD HAVE. OBVIOUSLY I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IF I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE THE DAY BEFORE DOING 65MPH. IF THE CONTROL ARM WOULD HAVE BROKE. ALL I CAN SAY IS I HAVE A GUARDIAN ANGEL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V119000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM). HE SAID THE JEEP BODY HAD SEPARATED IN THE BACK AND I NEEDED A NEW BALL JOINT MOUNTING PLATE AND CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY AND THAT THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE BALL JOINT MOUNTING PLATE AND UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY WERE ORDERED JUNE 16, 2011. MECHANIC WAS TOLD THE BALL JOINT MOUNTING PLATE (PART #52128586AA) IS ON "NATIONAL BACKORDER" AND ,AS OF 7/25/11, THERE ARE 66 CUSTOMERS WAITING FOR THIS PART. JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID ON 7/28/11 THAT THEY ARE "TRYING TO FIND OUT IF THIS PART IS BEING MADE" BECAUSE "NOBODY SEEMS TO HAVE THIS PART." SO THE JEEP IS UNSAFE DUE TO REAR BALL JOINT FAILURE AND I HAVE HAD NO CAR SINCE JUNE 16, 2011 AND IT IS NOW JULY 28, 2011. I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 JEEP LIBERTY AND WAS RAISING THE WINDOWS UP AND THE WINDOW OF THE BACK PASSENGER SIDE FELL INTO THE DOOR. THESE ARE ELECTRONIC WINDOWS. I WAS LUCKY THAT NONE OF MY CHILDREN WERE HURT. LUCKILY, THE WINDOW DID NOT BREAK AND I WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED IN MY CAR. I FEEL THERE IS A FAULTY PART THAT JEEP DOES NOT WANT TO ADDRESS. IT IS A PLASTIC PART IN THE WINDOW REGULATOR. IT COST ME $400 DOLLARS THE FIRST TIME TO REPLACE THE PART. THE SECOND ONE JEEP REPLACED FOR FREE. I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE AND JEEP DOES NOT FEEL RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING IT AGAIN.
