PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2002 JEEP LIBERTY IN MARCH, 2002. AT 8K, WHILE DRIVING AT 50 MPH, REAR END BEGAN FISHTAILING CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS OCCURED ON DEC. 16TH, 2002. WE STILL DO NOT HAVE THE VEHICLE. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM JEEP INSPECTED VEHICLE AND STATED THAT "REAR AXLE WAS NEVER PROPERLY WELDED TO VEHICLE." THIS OCCURED ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE AT THE FACTORY. WE DO NOT FEEL VEHICLE IS SAFE AT THIS POINT.THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY IS SERIOUS COMPROMISED. WE'RE CONCERNED OTHER 2002 JEEP LIBERTY'S MAY HAVE THIS PROBLEM.
2002 JEEP LIBERTY SPONTANEOUSLY ENGAGED IN FULL ACCELERATION. VEHICLE REACHED 100 MPH WITH NO ACCELERATOR PEDAL INFLUENCE OR ABILITY OF BRAKES TO DECELERATE. PUT VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL, RPMS REACHED 7000 (MAXIMUM ON TACHOMETER) AND I WAITED TIL VEHICLE REACHED 20 MPH AT WHICH POINT I MEASURED THAT I COULD SAFELY SHUT OFF POWER AND COAST TO A STOP. SOURCE OF PROBLEM: ACCELERATOR SPRING MECHANISM GOT STUCK UNDER NEARBY CABLE IN FULL-THROTTLE POSITION. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED. I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. THE FIRST WINTER I HAD IT THE FRONT END STARTED TO SLIDE IN A LIGHT DUSTING OF SNOW. I HAD A MORE AGGRESSIVE TIRSE PUT ON IN THE SPRING THINKING THIS WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM, IT DIDN'T. JEEP SAYS IT IS NORMAL FOR THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE TO SLIDE WITHOUT ANTI LOCK BRAKES. THERE IS NO CONTROL WHEN YOUR HEADING FOR A TREE. WHEN I BOUGHT THIS JEEP, I WAS NOT MADE AWARE THAT IT WOULD SLIDE BECAUSE IT DIDNT HAVE ANTI LOCK BRAKES. WHY DID I PAY EXTRA FOR A LIMITED LIBERTY WITHOUT ANTILOCK BRAKES? MY DAUGHTERS AND MY SAFTEY ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN A CD AND CASSETTE PLAYER. UPGRADING FROM A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE TO A 4 WHEEL DRIVE LIMITED LIBERTY IS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. *JB
VIBRATION FELT WHILE DRIVING WHEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS OR ACCELERATE. WHEN YOU GO ABOUT 50 IT GETS WORSE. THE VIBRATION IS THERE MOST OF THE TIME NOW. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INTO THE SHOP 3 TIMES SO FAR AND IS GOING BACK FOR A FOURTH TIME. AT FIRST THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NOT THERE AND NOW THEY ARE DOING THINGS BUT IT IS NOT GETTING BETTER. IT IS GETTING WORSE. *JB

NAR 04/28/2003 MR VIBRATION OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES OVER 50 MPH. *CB
MAJOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, INDENTIFIED BY DEALER AS 'BODY CONTROLLER' ELECTRICAL UNIT, FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT, KEY SAFETY EQUIPMENT FAILED TO WORK, INCLUDING HEADLIGHTS, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, POWER DOOR LOCKS, TAILGATE LATCH. OTHER SYSTEMS, NOT OBVIOUS TO OWNER, ALSO MIGHT HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. DT
MY 2002 JEEP LIBERTY HAS HAD A VIBRATION SINCE 1400 MILES. IT NOW HAS 29,000 MILES AND THE SAME VIBRATION. I HAVE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT THIS TWICE AND BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES TO HAVE IT CHECKED. THE ORIGINAL COMPLAINT THAT I CONTACTED DAIMLER CHRYSLER WITH THEY GAVE ME A COMPLAINT NUMBER, AND TOLD ME THAT THERE TECHS WERE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, AND THEY WERE WORKING ON IT. I THEN CONTACTED THEM AGAIN THIS YEAR AND ASKED IF THEY HAD RESOLVED IT, AND THEY ACT AS IF THERE IS ONLY MY COMPLAINT, AND NO RESOLUTION.
WHILE TRAVELING ON A COUNTY HIGHWAY, TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATEY 45 MPH, THE LEFT REAR TIRE EXPERIENCED A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TIRE. ALL TIRES WERE INFLATED TO MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED AIR PRESSURE. DT
THE DEALER ADVISED ME THAT THE PULLING TO THE RIGHT IS A CHARISTIC OF VEHICLE AND NO SOLUTIONS AT THIS TIME. THIS PULL IS A CONSTANT PULL AND REQUIRES THAT WE HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL TIGHTLY TOWARDS THE LEFT TO COMPENSATE FOR THE RIGHT PULL. THIS IS A HAZARD AND CAN EASILY CAUSE OVER CORRECTION ON TURNS BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO COMPENSATE FOR THE PULL. DT
UPON MAKING A SLIGHT LANE CORRECTION AT APPROX. 60 MPH, MY DAUGHTER'S 2002 JEEP LIBETY BEGAN SWERVING UNCONTROLLABLY. SHE FELT NO RESISTANCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL AS SHE TRIED TO STOP THE SWERVING. AT NO TIME DID SHE APPLY THE BRAKES. WITNESSES SAID IT APPEARED SHE HAD A FLAT TIRE. EVENTUALLY, THE VEHICLE ENTERED THE GRASS MEDIAN AND ROLLED 2.5 OR 3.5 TIMES COMING TO REST ON THE ROOF FACING ON-COMING TRAFFIC. THE COMPLETE REAR END(TIRES AND DIFFERENTIAL) SEPARATED AND ENDED UP APPROX. 75 FEET FROM THE VEHICLE. THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE OR CV JOINT WAS BROKEN. NEITHER HER PASSENGER OR HER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT WAS BROKEN AT THE END OF THE MOTION OF THE ROLLING. BOTH OCCUPANTS WERE BRUISED AND CUT. WE BELIEVE THE AXLE FAILED AND CAUSED THIS POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT. THIS VEHICLE HAD APPROX. 3000 MILES ON IT. AT 1800 MILES THE ENGINE HAD THROWN A ROD AND THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED COMPLETELY. THE JEEP LIBERTY IS STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND AND OF POOR DESIGN PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF THE REAR SUSPENSION. DAIMLER-CHYSLER HAS LOWERED THE SUSPENSION IN OBVIOUS RESPONSE TO ROLL OVER INCIDENTS.*JB..*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE FRONT AXLE BROKE AND CAUSED THE RIGHT TIRE TO BLOW. CONSUMER LOSS CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. MR UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TIE ROD WAS ALSO CUT IN HALF. *JG...*AK

AFTER RECALL FOR THE VEHCILE KNEE BLOCKER TRIM WAS COMPLETED, IT FELL OFF. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY FIX THE KNEE BLOCKER TRIM AGAIN, BUT SHORTLY AFTER IT FELL BACK OFF. TS
CONSUMERS SON WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. THE COLLISION CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER FOUR TIMES, COMING TO A REST ON THE VEHICLES TOP. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. AFTER RETURNING FROM THE HOSPITAL WHERE THE SON WAS BEING TREATED FOR CONTUSIONS, THE RECALL NOTICE HAD BEEN DELIVERED, 01V37. *JG

WHILE DRIVING 5MPH, VEHICLE MAKES A RUMBLING NOISE WHEN SHIFTING TO OVERDRIVE.*AK CONSUMER STATED THE TRANSMISSION MAKES A WHINE SOUND AND THE ENGINE CUTS OOF SOMETIMES, AND THE FUEL PUMP IS LOUD.*JB
CONSUMER STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING AT RESPECTIVE SPEEDS OF 30MPH, 50MPH AND 60 MPH OR ABOVE, THE VEHICLE SHIMMYS EXCESSIVELY ON THE FRONT END. VEHICLE CHECKED BY DLR 3X WHO HAS BEEN UNABLE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF PROBLEM. CONSUMER STATED SHIMMYING IS VERY DISTRACTING WHILE DRIVING AND IS VERY CONCERNED THAT PROBLEM CAN NOT BE DIAGNOSED. NLM
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS TRIPPED BY A SIGNIFICANT FUEL LEAK. NOT OBVIOUS ORIGIN - REQUIRED SIGNIFICANT DIAGNOSTICS TO LOCATE SOURCE. A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE AND PRODUCT DEFECT. *NM
JACK DOES NOT EXTEND TO HEIGHT NECESSARY TO RAISE FLAT TIRE OFF GROUND OR ALLOW REPLACEMENT SPARE TIRE TO BE INSTALLED. ON FIRST OCCASION, I HAD TO OBTAIN A 2X4 PIECE OF WOOD TO RAISE VEHICLE TO PROPER HEIGHT IN MY GARAGE, BUT WAS FEARFUL OF STABILITY OF AUTO. ON SECOND OCCASION AFTER CHURCH ON 8-25-02, I EXTENDED JACK TO FULL HEIGHT, COULD NOT REMOVE FLAT, WENT FOR SOMETHING TO RAISE IT HIGHER THEN JACK WOULD NOT RETRACT. HAD TO BORROW A SCISSOR JACK FROM A PASSING MOTORIST. THE JACK WOULD BE COMPLETELY USELESS IN ANY ADVERSE ROAD SURFACE. NEED TO REQUIRE A MORE SUBSTANTIAL JACK THAT WOULD BE SUITABLE FOR RAISING VEHICLE WHILE REMAINING STABLE TO AVOID INJURY. I PITY ANY MOM WHO GETS A FLAT WITH A CHILD ON BOARD AND NO CELL PHONE TO CALL FOR HELP!*AK
I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE POWER WINDOW REGULATORS ON THE BACK WINDOWS OF MY JEEP LIBERTY 2002 ON 5 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. I HAVE BARELY USED THESE WINDOWS AND THIS HAS BEEN A HEMORRHAGE OF MONEY. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED, THEY INFORMED ME AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT I WAS OVER THE DATE OF WARRANTY, AND THAT MY MILEAGE ALSO EXCEEDED THE LIMIT. I HAD TO REPLACE THE TWO BACK ONES, THEN I HAD TO GO BACK AND REPLACE A THIRD ONE, LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER THAT. THE FOURTH AND FIFTH TIME IT HAPPENED, I WENT TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP AS GOING TO THE DEALERSHIP WAS TOO EXPENSIVE, NOW THE WINDOW DOES NOT WORK AGAIN. THE WINDOWS JUST FALL, AND WATER AND DEBRIS COME INTO THE CAR. AMONG JEEP LIBERTY OWNERS, THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, AND ONE THAT THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ON. I WANT TO PLACE A COMPLAINT BECAUSE THIS CAR CAME DEFECTIVE AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR TO ASSIST PEOPLE WHO PURCHASED IT. CUSTOMERS NEED PROTECTION ON THIS MATTER. *TR

I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR LESS THAN 5 MINUTES AFTER LEAVING AN APPOINTMENT. I WAS STOPPED IN A LEFT TURN POCKET ON TORRANCE BLVD @ HAWTHORNE BLVD WHEN I SAW THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT, HEAR A CHIRP AND THE ENGINE STALLED. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND DRIVE TO THE UNOCAL STATION, GET GASOLINE AND I CALLED THE LONG BEACH CHRYSLER JEEP, THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE SOLENOID PACK WAS REPLACED THE WEEK BEFORE. I WAS TOLD TO GET MY VEHICLE TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP. I DELIVERED THE VEHICLE TO SOUTH BAY CHRYSLER & JEEP ABOUT 4:00 P.M. ON 8/8/03. THEY TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, PERFORMED SOME DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, HOWEVER, COULD NOT EXPLAIN THE PROPBLEM AND RETURNED MY VEHICLE TO ME. WENT TO THE WEEK BEFORE BECAUSE THEY REPLACED A SOLENOID PACK TATION AT THE CORNER OF HAWTHORNE BLVD @ TORRANCE BLVD,*AK
I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE A VEHICLE PULLED IN FRONT OF ME AND I T-BONED THEM AT APPROX. 50-55 MPH. NEITHER THE FRONT DRIVER OR PASSENGER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. SAID VEHICLE NOW TOTALLED. CONTACTED CHRYSLER, FILED A CLAIM. THEY SENT A "SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR" THAT TRIED TO TELL BOTH THE BODY SHOP OWNER (WHO WAS ON SCENE OF ACCIDENT) AND MY HUSBAND THAT THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED DIFFERENTLY THAN IT ACTUALLY DID. THE INVESTIGATORS CONTACT AT CHRYSLER, ROY PORTERFIELD, THEN EXPLAINED TO ME THAT HE THOUGHT THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED DIFFERENTLY THAN IT DID. HE TOLD ME THAT THE AIRBAGS WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO GO OFF UNLESS IT IS A FULL FRONTAL IMPACT. THIS ACCIDENT WAS A FULL FRONTAL IMPACT. I HIT THE STEERING WHEEL IN SAID ACCIDENT AND AFTER THREE WEEKS AM STILL IN PAIN AND NOT FULLY ABLE TO RETURN TO WORK.*AK

REAR DRIVER SIDE DOOR WHEN SPEED IS GREATER THAN 55 MPH A AIR LEAK WIND NOISE OCCURES AND GROWS LOUDER WITH SPEED. NOISE IS AT BOTTOM SEAL OF THE GLASS. TWO TIMES TO THE DEALER PENDING A THIRD VISIT WITHOUT RESOLUTION. DT
WHEN DRIVING ALONG AT 48 TO 55 MPH, I CAN HEAR AND FEEL A BEARING TYPE VIBRATION NOISE COMING FROM THE MIDDLE OR FRONT DRIVE TRAIN. THE NOISE IS A LOW PITCH AND CAN BE HEARD BEST WHEN GOING UP HILLY ROADS. MY BEST GUESS, THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE GEARS OVER MESHING IN THE FRONT AXLE. WAITNG FOR D.C. TO COME UP WITH A FIX. DT
WHILE STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION AND AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.*AK THERE WAS ONE INJURY.*YH
A BODY CONTROL MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE CAUSING LOSS OF ALMOST ALL THE ELEC ENT (DOOR LOCKS, AIR CONDITIONING, AND SPEEDOMETER). THIS PART WAS REPLACED TWICE AFTER 18 DAYS IN THE SERVICE DEPT AND STILL IS NOT OPERATIONAL. A CAR WITH ITEMS LIKE THE SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING IS UNSAFE.
FRONT TIRES ARE WEARING UNEVEN AND EXCESSIVELY. DEALER NOTIFIED. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
PURCHASED 4/02 AND BY 7/02 WITH APPROX. 6,000K EXPERIENCED HARD DOWNSHIFTING WHEN STOPPING AS WELL AS BETWEEN GEARS. DEALER SERVICE "REMOVED BURRS FROM DRIVESHAFT". RETURNED FOR SERVICE 8/02 WITH SAME PROBLEM. AGAIN "REMOVED BURRS FROM DRIVESHAFT". ON 3RD VISIT IN 9/02 I WAS TOLD THEY COULDN'T REPAIR ANYTHING AND THAT" THE VEHICLE HAD A PROGRAMMABLE TRANSMISSION AND IT'S MEMORY WAS LIKELY RESPONDING TO A PREVIOUS SIMILAR DRIVING SESSION"...HENCE THE GEAR SLAMMING! RETURNED 4TH TIME 2 WEEKS LATER AND THIS TIME WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE COMPLAINT AND THE DEALER WOULD FILE A COMPLAINT ON MY BEHALF TO DAIMLER/CHRYSLER AND I'D BE CONTACTED WHEN THEY HEARD SOMETHING. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM ANYONE EVEN AFTER SENDING MY OWN COMPLAINT LETTER TO D/C IN 11/02. HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED MANY INCIDENTS OF REAR TIRES SLIPPING AND FISHTAILING IN VARIOUS ROAD/WEATHER CONDITIONS AS WELL AS CONSTANT RIGHT PULL AND HAVE TO FIGHT STEERING WHEEL TO DRIVE STRAIGHT.
AS WE WERE GOING DOWNHILL ON OUR STREET I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO COME TO A STOP AT THE END OF OUR ROAD. THE BRAKES WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR.WE ROLLED OUT ONTO HWY 61-67 WHERE WE COLLIDED WITH AN ONCOMING VAN.THANKFULLY THERE WERE NO INJURIES.WE HAVE RECIEVED NO ASSISTANCE FROM THE DEALER OR CHRYSLER.WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR YET TO BE BORN CHILD AND WERE NEARLY KILLED DUE TO FAULTY BRAKES IN A THREE MONTH OLD VEHICLE.MY WIFE IS FIVE MONTHS PREGNANT. THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AS WELL. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM.*AK
WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK OR IDLING, IT WOULD START TO REV UP TO HIGH RPMS. WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, THE BACK TIRES WOULD SPIN. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO THE DEALERS SEVERAL TIMES. MECHANIC WOULD STATE THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. TS *JG *JB JG
WHILE DRIVING TURNED RIGHT AT A STOP SIGN AND HEARD A LOUD POP. CONSUMER LOST STEERING, AND CRASHED INTO A DITCH. VEHICLE CHECKED BY DEALER WHO ADVISED CONSUMER OF A BROKEN SPINDLE.*AK
AT 45MPH VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH, AND FRONTAL AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. CAUSE UNKNOWN. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
JEEP WAS STRUCK BY A FORD ESCORT ON L SIDE, REAR DOOR & WHEEL WELL. REAR AXLE WAS KNOCKED COMPLETELY OFF JEEP, LANDING BESIDE JEEP. MECHANICS STATED THAT AXLE WAS NOT BOLTED ON, BUT ATTACHED WITH TWO METAL STRIPS, WHICH APPEARED TO HAVE SNAPPED ON IMPACT. OUR ACCIDENT WAS IN A VERY CONFINED SPACE (NEXT TO A CANYON WALL), BUT IN A CROWDED TRAFFIC SITUATION THIS COULD BE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS TO ADJACENT TRAFFIC. 2002 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED. I HAVE REPLACED THE ENGINE, REBUILT THE 4 -WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT, REPLACED THE A/C CONDENSER AND COIL, AND NOW THE RADIO, DOME LIGHTS, POWER LOCKS ARE BROKEN. THE BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT NOW THE BLOWER MOTOR IS BROKEN. WHAT A LEMON FROM DAY ONE. LATCHES ON HATCH NOT WORKING CORRECTLY, MOLD SMELL FROM A/C. IT IS SOMETHING ALL THE TIME WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR

EVERYDAY, THERE IS A CLUNK FROM THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHEN BACKING OUT OF A CAR PORT AND WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL TO STRAIGHTEN UP AT A LOW SPEED. SAME NOISE HAS ALSO BEEN HEARD WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS.*JB
