WIFE WAS DRIVING VEHICLE ON RURAL ROAD. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR BUZZERS BUT NOTICED ENGINE TEMPERATURE WAS INCREASING. SHE IDENTIFIED A PARKING LOT A FEW MILES UP THE ROAD WHERE SHE PLANNED TO PULL INTO SINCE THE ROAD DID NOT OFFER A SHOULDER. JUST BEFORE REACHING THE PARKING LOT THE ENGINE STALLED OUT AND SHE SMELLED OIL. WITH THE LOSS OF POWER SHE IMMEDIATELY LOST CONTROL AND ALMOST COLLIDED WITH THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC. SHE WAS ABLE TO CORRECT HER STEERING BEFORE AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED AND COASTED INTO THE PARKING LOT. SHE CONTACTED ME AND WE WALKED THROUGH THE INCIDENT AND SHE OPENED THE HOOD. SHE DESCRIBED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT COMPLETELY COVERED IN SMOKING OIL. I ALSO REVIEWED THE ENGINE WHEN I WENT TO RETRIEVE THE VEHICLE AND NOTED THAT IT HAD APPARENTLY SEIZED BECAUSE THE BELT WAS OFF. THE DEALERSHIP WAS CONTACTED BUT REMAINS ELUSIVE TO ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE EVEN THOUGH THERE IS AN INCREASING AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THESE ENGINES PREMATURE FAILURE DUE TO "ENGINE SLUDGE" AVAILABLE ONLINE. I HAVE KNOWN 2 OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS ISSUE, I HAVE BEEN THE ONLY ONE WITH FIRE. MY JEEP IS LEAKING OIL FROM THE ENGINE SEAL THAT IS JUST ABOVE THE PASSENGER SIDE UPSTREAM EXHAUST (RIGHT BEFORE THE PASSENGER SIDE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I SMELLED BURNING OIL AND I GOT UNDER THE CAR AND THERE WAS A SMALL FIRE WHICH I EXTINGUISHED WITH MY RAG. THE PROBLEM IS ALSO A HUGE HEALTH ISSUE. IF YOU ARE STOPPED AT A LIGHT, OR STOP SIGN AND HAVE THE HEAT OR A/C ON. THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE BECOMES FILLED WITH THE BURNING SMELL. SMOKE BELLOWS OUT FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE AT THESE STOPS ALSO. I AM AFRAID OF THE THING BURSTING INTO FLAMES AT A LIGHT AND BEING HELPLESS. I KNOW 2 OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAVE THIS EXACT ISSUE. ONE OF THEM GOT RID OF THEIR VEHICLE, THE OTHER STILL HAS IT. THIS IS A MAJOR DEFECT THAT WILL RESULT IN FIRE, OR AS I SEE IT CANCER DUE TO THE SMOKE ENTERING THE VEHICLE. DROVE IT THE NIGHT BEFORE AND IT RAN PERFECTLY FINE. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. COME OUT TO GO TO WORK IN THE MORNING AND TURN THE KEY AND THE ENGINE WAS KNOCKING REALLY BAD. SO I TURNED IT OFF AND TRIED IT AGAIN AND GOT THE SAME THING AGAIN. TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC WHICH IS 1/8MILES AWAY. HE REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES AND STILL DOING IT. HE SAID THE ENGINE HAS FULL COMPRESSION. HE CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. NOT EVEN A 100,000 MILES ON IT YET. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN JEEP... THE MECHANIC SAID I NEED A NEW ENGINE. 3.7L 2003 JEEP LIBERTY AND IT HAVE SEEN OTHERS HAVING THIS SUCH PROBLEM TOO. JEEP NEEDS TO STEP IN AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT MY JEEP LIBERTY UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. *TR
I HAVE A JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE 4X4 WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS DRIVING ON THE QUICKWAY (HWY 17 IN MIDDLETOWN, NY) WHEN MY CAR DROPPED DEAD IN THE ROAD WITH NO INDICATIONS OF ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. IT HAD GAS IN IT, IT'S FLUIDS WERE ALL CHANGED, ETC. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE SPRING BROKE CAUSING THE ROCKER ARM TO DROP OUT THEREFORE CAUSING MAJOR DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE. HAD I BEEN DRIVING IN THE PASSING LANE OR MIDDLE LANE OF THE QUICKWAY, MY SON AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD PARTICULARLY IF A SEMI WAS BEHIND US OR A MAJOR CRASH IF IN EITHER LANES. FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND COULD COAST OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD TO RELATIVE SAFETY. HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN IN A CAR WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES ON IT? THIS, IN MY OPINION IS A SAFETY DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE. CHRYSLER SHOULD BE FORCED TO RECALL THESE CARS AND FIX THEM. I CALLED THE DEALER JUST RECENTLY AND WAS TOLD THAT CHRYSLER WOULD PAY FOR PART OF THE REPAIRS IF I HAD THE OIL CHANGE RECEIPTS. MY HUSBAND DOES ALL THE MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE, FOR THE MOST PART, HE DIDN'T KEEP THE RECEIPTS. I HEARD A DING DING, NOTICED I HAD NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES AND COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE RAMP. IT WENT FROM RIDING WITH NO PROBLEMS TO JUST DEAD. I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS RIDING IN THE PASSING LANE OR THE MIDDLE LANE OF RT. 17 IN MIDDLETOWN, NY. I PROBABLY WOULD BE DEAD. MY SON WAS WITH ME ALSO. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED HOME AND MY HUSBAND LOOKED AT IT AND TOLD ME THAT THE SPRING HAD BROKEN AND COME OFF AND THE ROCKER ARM AND TWO CLIPS. WE STILL DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE TO THE ENGINE. APPARENTLY, AND THIS IS FROM A JEEP MECHANIC. IN BOTH THE 3.7 AND 4.7 ENGINES, THE VALVE SEATS ARE STEEL AND THE CYLINDER HEADS ARE ALUMINUM AND THE TWO METALS CONTRACT DIFFERENTLY AND WHEN THEY DO THE VALVE SEATS FALL OUT OF THE HEAD. I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM LISTED ON THE INTERNET BY SO MANY PEOPLE THAT IT'S UNFAIR THAT JEEP CAN DO THIS TO PEOPLE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR WITH AN INHERITANCE , I DON'T HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX IT. I HAVE BOUGHT THE ROCKER ARM, THE SPRING AND THE CLIPS BUT STILL AT THIS TIME NEED A ROCKER ARM INSTALLER. THIS CAR HAS BEEN KEPT UP ON ALL FLUIDS AND CHANGES.
