TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40-50 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SHIFT INTO GEARS CORRECTLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RPM SURGED WHILE DRIVING 40-50 MPH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE JERKED DURING THE FAILURE WITH THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT OCCASIONALLY THE TRANSMISSION CEASED IN FIRST GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BY HER SON WHO RETRIEVED DTC CODES: P0700 (TCM) AND P0734 (INCORRECT GEAR RATIO). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE AND SHIFTING THE GEAR SHIFTER INTO PARK, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO ENGAGE, ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO ROLL BACKWARDS. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE AND TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE CURB TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM ROLLING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED AND DETERMINED THAT ENGINE MODULE NEEDED TO BE UPDATED. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V460000 (POWER TRAIN) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
WHILE DRIVING, THE GEAR SHIFT SLIPS OUT OF GEAR WITHOUT THE CLUTCH BEING USED. THIS IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND AT 155,000 MILES, THIS IS LOW MILEAGE IN MY CONSIDERATION FOR THIS TO BE HAPPENING. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD FOR MYSELF OR ANY OTHER CARS AROUND.
I WAS DRIVING UP THE STREET HEARD SOMETHING LIKE A RAN OVER SOMETHING THEN JEEP CUT OFF GOT OUT TO SEE IF I RAN OVER SOMETHING BUT NOTHING WAS THERE AND JEEP WOULD NOT START BACK UP, WHAT IF I HAD BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY OR BUSY TRAFFIC I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY HURT, WHICH U AM BLESSED THAT DID NOT HAPPEN, THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS CHRYSLER SHOULD NOTAKE ANYTHING THAT COULD CAUSE YOU BODILY HARM. A COMPUTER SHOULD NEVER GO OUT THAT IS DANGEROUS. I HAD TO HAVE THE JEEP TOWED TO MY HOME AND THEN TO A SHIP ON TWO DIFFERENT TIMES AN ONE TIME BACK HOME FROM THE SHOP BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE 900.00 TO REPAIR. SO I'M STUCK WITHOUT HAVING MY JEEP REPAIRED BECAUSE I'M ON A FIXED INCOME. ALSO HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WHERE CHRYSLER DID POOR WIRING., CIGARETTE LIGHTER KEEP GOING OUT, BLINKER AND RADIO WIRING IS TERRIBLE AND ONE OF THE FRONT LIGHTS. CHRYSLER YOU GOT TO DO A BETTER JOB, BECAUSE I LOVED MY JEEP, BUT VERY DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE IT REPAIR.
ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS INCLUDING TODAY, MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY HAS FALLEN OUT OF GEAR. PREVIOUSLY I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY DOING ABOUT 60 MPH AND THE CAR SWITCHED FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL ON ITS OWN. TODAY THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT I WAS LEAVING WAWA TO GET COFFEE AND ON MY WAY TO WORK, AT THE RED LIGHT THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE, FOOT ON BRAKE AS ONE WOULD NORMALLY DO. WHEN THE LIGHT SWITCHED TO GREEN I LIGHTLY TAPPED THE ACCELERATOR/GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR SAT THERE FOR A MOMENT WITHOUT MOVING AGAIN AS IF IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. SO I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL AGAIN ONLY THIS TIME THE CAR STARTED TO REVERSE, AS THE GEAR SHIFT CLEARLY SHOWED THAT I WAS AGAIN IN DRIVE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, THANK GOD BOTH TIMES THIS HAS OCCURRED THAT NO OTHER VEHICLE WAS BEHIND ME OR ELSE THEY MAY HAVE BEEN A FATAL ACCIDENT ESPECIALLY WHEN I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE READ ONLINE NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS WHERE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER JEEP OWNERS I AM VERY DISSATISFIED THAT IT SEEMS THERE WAS NO RECALL WITH THIS ISSUE AS FAR AS MY RESEARCH SHOWS. WE WERE AT A BERRY FARM PICKING RASPBERRIES, WE LOOKED UP AND SAW OUR VEHICLE ROLLING TOWARDS US. THE TRANSMISSION MUST OF POPPED OUT GEAR(PARK) THE CAR CONTINUED GAINING SPEED DOWN THE HILL AS IT SLAMMED INTO A TREE. *TR

THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE AS A RESULT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT THE FRONT AXLE FAILED AND CAUSED THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

2004 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT. ON MARCH 20, 2009 WHILE DRIVING, THE AUTO TRANSMISSION SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR, WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR. ON MARCH 24TH, LIBERTY RETURNED TO US. DEALER CHARGED $500 TO REPLACE WIRING ATTACHED TO PCM, STATING THEY WERE WORN OUT AND NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. ON APRIL 24TH THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IN CONNECTICUT, THE LIBERTY ABRUPTLY DOWNSHIFTED FROM 4TH TO 1ST GEAR NEARLY CAUSING US TO BE STRUCK BY TRAILING VEHICLES, AND WOULD NOT GO INTO ANY OTHER DRIVING GEAR. JEEP DEALER IN GREENWICH, CT SAID THEY SUSPECTED THE TRANNY WAS WORN BUT COULD NOT UNDERTAKE THE REPAIR. WE CANCELLED OUR TRIP AND BROUGHT IT TO A LOCAL DEALER ON APRIL 25TH, BAD PCM DIAGNOSED, REPLACED. WARRANTY COVERED. RECEIVED JEEP BACK ON 5/1/09. LATER THE SAME DAY THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. BROUGHT IT BACK TO SAME DEALER. PCM REPLACED AGAIN WE'RE TOLD. LIBERTY RETURNED TO US ON 5/6/09. ON 6/9/09 WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE JEEP SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY ONCE AGAIN AN ACCIDENT WAS NARROWLY AVOIDED. TOWED TO A DIFFERENT LOCAL DEALER. BAD PCM AGAIN DIAGNOSED. PART HAD TO BE ORDERED. LIBERTY FINALLY RETURNED TO US ON 7/2/09. ON 7/9/09 WHILE DRIVING ON LOCAL ROAD, THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AGAIN AND WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR. WE BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER WHO DID LAST REPAIR. AS OF TODAY IT REMAINS THERE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN EACH INSTANCE AT THE EXACT MOMENT THE PROBLEM OCCURRED. *TR

THE VEHICLE STALLED ONCE WHILE DRIVING AND THEN RESTARTED ITSELF MOMENTS LATER. THE CONTACT FILED A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 60,000.
TRANSMISSION HAD LONG DELAY BETWEEN REVERSE AND DRIVE. EVENTUALLY GOT WORSE AND WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. DEALER SAID TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALSO TRANSFER CASE BROKEN AND JAMMED, NOT ALLOWING VEHICLE TO MOVE. HAD LIBERTY INTO SEE DEALER WEEK PRIOR TO CASE FAILING. DEALER SAID NOTHING WRONG AFTER I STATED TO THEM THE LIBERTY FELT LIKE IT WAS STUCK IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE. COST WAS $ 4200.00 FOR REPLACEMENT OF TRANS AND TRANSFER CASE. *TR

I BOUGHT A 2004 JEEP LIBERTY IN AUGUST 2006 WITH 19,000 MILES ON IT, FROM THE DAY I BOUGHT IT I COMPLAINED OF BAD SHIFTING. IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 6 TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM, WITH THE LAST TIME ON APRIL 2, 2007 WHEN THEY FINALLY PULLED THE PAN AND FOUND BRASS SHAVINGS! THEY CLAIMED THAT ONE SIDE OF CLUTCHES WERE COMPLETELY BURNT. I EXPLAINED TO THEM OVER AND OVER THAT IT HESITATED AND WOULD NOT ALWAYS WANT TO TAKE OFF. - *AK
