ANOTHER 2005 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT MODEL THAT STARTED "BURPING" ABOUT A PINT OF FUEL OUT OF THE FILL WHEN PUMPING GAS AND THE TANK GETS TO THE FULL LEVEL. THIS VEHICLE DID NOT DO THIS FOR THE FIRST YEARS OF OWNERSHIP. THIS HAPPENS AT ANY STATION AND DURING ANY WEATHER. THE ONLY WAY AROUND THIS IS TO GUESS HOW MUCH FUEL THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO NEED BASED ON THE FUEL GAUGE READING AND SLOW THE FILL PROCESS DOWN TO A CRAWL WHEN NEARING WHAT YOU THINK IS NEARLY FULL. THIS IS REALLY A SAFETY PROBLEM FOR BOTH PERSONAL INJURY AND FIRE. UNFORTUNATELY, WITH THE VEHICLE OUT OF WARRANTY, THE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT BE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS UNLESS FORCED INTO A RECALL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE DROVE ON BLACK ICE AND STRUCK A TREE HEAD ON. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. THE FRONT AND REAR DRIVER SIDE DOORS NO LONGER LOCK AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PLACED INTO DRIVE. THE OTHER DOORS LOCK AS NORMAL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE REPAIR WOULD BE HER RESPONSIBILITY. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 69,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,900.
WHEN I FILL WITH GAS THE TANK OVER FLOWS, SPLASHING OUT GAS FROM THE FILLER NECK. THIS HAPPENS EITHER WAY ON AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL FILLING. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN SINCE 2008. *TR
2005 LIBERTY CRD DIESEL FUEL HEATER ELEMENT IS CLEARLY A FIRE HAZARD. I SEE THE INVESTIGATION PE07041 HAS BEEN CLOSED. THIS IS AN ERROR, I HAVE SEEN ON THE FORUMS MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ALTHOUGH MINE CAUSED A LOSS OF PRIME SO THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE PRIMED EVERY AM UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I CAN SEE HOW THIS IS CLEARLY A FIRE HAZARD THAT I SUSPECT EXISTS ON ALL OF THESE VEHICLES AND UNTIL A PROBLEM EXISTS THE DISASTER IS JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN POSSIBLE CAUSING FIRES AND LOSS OF LIFE. SUGGESTION-JEEP REPLACE THE ELEMENT WITH A RACOR OR SIMILAR UNIT THAT DOES NOT POSE THE FIRE HAZARDS. I HAVE PICS I WOULD GLADLY SEND YOU AS EVIDENCE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW COLLAPSED INTO THE DOOR PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE WINDOW REGULATOR AND GLASS WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
JEEP CHANGED THE VEHICLE MPG PERFORMANCE WITH A REQUIRED RECALL TO JEEP CRD DIESEL. THE RECALL DETUNED THE ENGINE. PRIOR TO RECALL I WOULD GET ABOUT 30+ MPG HIGHWAY, AFTER THE RECALL I AM GETTING 16.4 MPG HIGHWAY. I WAS TOLD TODAY BY A JEEP REPRESENTATIVE THAT THERE WAS NO FIX AVAILABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I SHOULD HAVE TO SUFFER A 50% LOSS IN MPG AFTER THEIR FIX! *TR
05 JEEP LIBERTY HAS HAD A CODE OF P0456 SMALL LEAK IN THE EVAP SYSTEM. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM AND IF THE CODE CAME BACK IT WOULD MOST LIKELY BE THE LEAK DETECTION PUMP. THE CODE CAME BACK TWO WEEKS LATER. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANOTHER DINO TEST TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIND A FAIL IN THE SYSTEM. I FOUND OUT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE THAT ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM SUGGESTING THAT THIS EVAP SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION PUMP IS DEFECTED IF IT BREAKS EVERY 2 YEARS, THE JEEP DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SMOGGED IN CA FOR 5 YEARS THAT'S ALOT OF VAPOR GOING INTO THE AIR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY ON A SLIGHT INCLINE AND THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARDS INTO THE STREET. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V460000 (POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 27,600. UPDATED 03-04-08 *BF
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE. THE VEHICLE THEN TURNED AROUND AND CRASHED INTO A GUARDRAIL ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND ALL OF THE SEAT BELTS BECAME UNLATCHED FROM THE BUCKLE. ONE YEAR PRIOR TO THE CRASH, NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED DURING A SEVERE FRONTAL CRASH. THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM ALSO FAILED. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 78,000.
WHEN FILLING UP MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY THE GAS OVER SPILLS. THIS WASN'T ALWAYS THE CASE BUT HAS BEEN HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY OVER THE TIME OF OWNING THE CAR. I CURRENTLY DON'T FILL UP THE VEHICLE DUE TO THIS ISSUE BECAUSE WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE CAR SMELLS OF GAS. *TR
WHILE WAITING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND STRUCK THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF IT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED WITH BOTH FEET BUT THIS NOT STOP THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, BUT THIS TIME THERE WAS PROPERTY DAMAGE. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE STARTED AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED IN PLACE. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE IGNITION ROD BEING FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE STEERING COLUMN. THE FAILURE RECURRED SIX MONTHS LATER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
THE FUEL FILTER HEAD UNIT ON MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY CRD DIESEL HAS A DEFECTIVE DESIGN. IT IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE WITH OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. THE FUEL HEATER IN THE FILTER HEAD APPEARS TO OVERHEAT AND CAUSE A FUEL LEAK. THIS CAUSES A DANGEROUS SITUATION TO OCCUR AS FUEL LEAKS ONTO WIRES WHICH ARE USED TO POWER THE FUEL HEATER. ONCE THIS LEAK BEGINS, IT INTRODUCES AIR INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM WHICH CAN DAMAGE THE INJECTOR PUMP OR CAUSE A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WHICH MAY CAUSE A TRAFFIC HAZARD. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR WINDOW SLIDES DOWN WITHOUT USE OF THE WINDOW CONTROL - IT WILL THEN NOT GO UP. DURING DRIVING THIS CONDITION CAUSES WIND TO ENTER THE VEHICLE MAKING FOR A DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY CRD. THE HEATING ELEMENT AND PLUG IN THE FUEL FILTER ASSEMBLY IN MY FUEL SYSTEM IS SCORCHED AND SHOWS SIGNS OF BURNING. THE FUEL PRE HEATER COMES IN CONTACT WITH AIR AND DIESEL FUEL, AND SCORCHING OR IGNITION COULD CAUSE A VEHICLE FIRE. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE SIGNS OF SCORCHING ON MY HEATER ELEMENT PLUG SHOWS THAT DIESEL FUEL AND AIR ARE LEAKING ONTO A POTENTIAL FIRE CAUSING ELECTRICAL COMPONENT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED THEN THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. THE CONTACT WAITED FIVE MINUTES THEN WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY THREE MONTHS LATER WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED THEN THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHICH RESULTED IN TOTAL LOSS OF POWER AND A HEAD ON COLLISION INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. AS OF MAY 20, 2008, THE DEALER HAD NOT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,500 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,623.
2005 JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE WITH TIRE AIR PRESSURE SENSORS HAVE FAILED REPEATEDLY AS TEMPERATURES DROP BELOW 35 DEGREES OUTSIDE, CAUSING UNANTICIPATED AND SIGNIFICANT DROPS IN TIRE AIR PRESSURE. THIS EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN SERVICED BY AN AUTHORIZED JEEP SERVICE CENTER (DEALER FROM WHICH VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED) ON FIVE (4) OCCASIONS IN THE PAST TWELVE (12) MONTHS, 2 OF THE SENSORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED (DEALER WILL ONLY REPLACE EACH SENSOR AS THEY CEASE) AND I AM ON MY WAY TO HAVING THE 3RD REPLACED THIS WEEK. *TR
I AM THE OWNER OF A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY WITH A 2.8 DIESEL CRD ENGINE. CHRYSLER HAS A MANDATORY RECALL REQUIRING SOME NEW COMPONENTS ON THE TRANSMISSION AND A "SLIGHT" ENGINE DETUNE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL REASONS; 1. BETTER GAS MILEAGE. 2. MORE ENGINE TORQUE FOR TOWING AND A LONGER LASTING ENGINE. AT 31K DOLLARS YOU WOULD EXPECT IT TO BE GOOD VEHICLE. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT CHRYSLER HAS TOO SMALL OF A TRANSMISSION ON THIS VEHICLE AND IS DETUNING THE ENGINE TO SPARE THE TRANSMISSION. I'M SORRY, BUT I BOUGHT A DIESEL FOR THAT VERY REASON: MORE TORQUE THAN A GAS ENGINE. DO I HAVE TO EXPECT THIS RECALL? THE DEALER WAS CALLED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE APRIL OF 2007 REGARDING THIS RECALL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE AND DID NOT PROVIDE A TIME FRAME FOR WHEN IT WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 30,450.
FUEL FILTER HEAD UNIT HEATER ELECTRICAL CONNECTION LEAKS CAUSING SMOKE AND POSSIBLE FIRE. *TR
FUEL OVERFLOW ISSUE: WHILE REFUELING, TANK WILL CONSISTENTLY OVERFLOW LARGE AMOUNTS OF GASOLINE ONTO THE GROUND. PROBLEM OCCURS REGARDLESS OF GAS STATION USED. PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED CONSISTENTLY FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THIS PROBLEM IS A SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE AND SHOULD RESULT IN A RECALL BEFORE SOMEBODY IS INJURED OR THE ENVIRONMENT IS FURTHER SOILED. INTERNET RESEARCH INDICATES THAT NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO CHRYSLER CORPORATION AND SOME MAY BE DENIED REPAIRS DUE TO EXPIRATION OF VEHICLE WARRANTY. FAILURE OF POWER WINDOW CABLE CAUSED REAR DOOR TO BE "DEADBOLTED" CLOSED WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO OPEN WHEN THE CABLE SNAKED ITS WAY INTO THE DOOR CATCH SYSTEM. WHEN ADDING THIS INFORMATION TO A FORUM IT WAS BROUGHT UP BY OTHER MEMBERS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO THEM AS WELL. THIS "DEADBOLTING" OF THE DOORS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. THE VEHICLE HAS GOODYEAR RADIAL, SIZE P225R15R16 TIRES. THE TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT BLINKED INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE AND STATED THAT IT WAS NORMAL. WHILE DRIVING 69 MPH, THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE DROPPED AND THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL. THE RIDGES IN THE ROAD EVENTUALLY CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE NORMAL. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT, BUT THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE. THE CONSUMER STATED IT DID BLINK FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH A SPARE. AAA STATED THAT THE TIRE FAILED DUE TO LOW TIRE PRESSURE. THE BRAKES ON MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY FAILED IN A MALL PARKING LOT AND CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. ONLY 1-1/2 MONTHS EARLIER I HAD REAR BRAKES REPLACED AT THE SUGGESTION OF THE DEALERSHIP (MILEAGE WAS 25,000 MILES). THE DEALERSHIP NEAR THE ACCIDENT SITE SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE (TWICE), AND THEY SAID THEY CHECKED EVERYTHING AND COULD FIND NO PROBLEM. THE BRAKES FAILED TWICE SINCE THE ACCIDENT; FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS AROUND. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN BRAKING THAT IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE SLIPPING. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. CONTACTED JEEP COMPLAINT LINE AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY WILL DO BECAUSE I HAVE NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE THERE IS A PROBLEM. I STOPPED AT THE DEALERSHIP A THIRD TIME, AND THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID IT COULD BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AND UNLESS THEY ARE DRIVING IT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THEY CANNOT HELP ME. CONSEQUENTLY, THERE WAS $3,300 DAMAGE DONE TO MY JEEP AND I AM NOT SURE OF THE DAMAGE TO THE OTHER VEHICLE. I HAD TO PAY $500 DEDUCTIBLE, $100 FOR A RENTAL, AND MY INSURANCE RATES WILL SURELY RISE. *TR
THE REAR WINDOW ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FELL DOWN FOR NO REASON. I PRESSED THE SWITCH IT DID NOT MOVE. I PULLED IT UP BY HAND BUT IT WOULD FALL RIGHT DOWN. I TOOK IT TO THE JEEP DEALER THINKING IT WOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY CHARGED ME. TWO YEARS LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE SAME WINDOW. I PAID FOR IT AGAIN. SINCE, THEY FIXED IT LAST TIME THEY SCRATCHED THE GLASS AND I CANNOT OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. I AM SINGLE AND 99.9% OF THE TIME I AM THE ONLY ONE IN THE CAR. THE WINDOW DOES NOT EVEN GET USED AND IT FAILS. THE WINDOW WAS NOT USED ONCE SINCE THE SECOND REPLACEMENT AND IT HAS FAILED AGAIN FOR A THIRD TIME. THE SECOND TIME I WAS AT THE JEEP DEALER TO HAVE IT REPLACED THE SERVICE ADVISOR EVEN SAID TO ME THAT THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME ON THESE VEHICLES. WELL, THEN WHY ISN'T SOMETHING BEING DONE ABOUT IT? WHEN YOU READ THE INTERNET YOU WILL FIND THAT ALL JEEP LIBERTY'S FROM 2002 TO 2007 HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THE PART WAS NOT ENGINEERED CORRECTLY AND DOES NOT HOLD UP. THE PART IS CLEARLY DEFECTIVE. YOU WILL BE DRIVING ALONG AND ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HEAR AIR RUSHING IN BEHIND YOU. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO BE FORCED TO FIX IT BECAUSE OTHERWISE, THEY WILL NOT DO IT. THEY KNOWINGLY SOLD A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT WHICH IS FRAUD AND IT IS ILLEGAL. YOUR JEEP IS NEVER SECURE AND IS UNSAFE. I, LIKE MANY OTHERS, HAVE A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY CRD DIESEL. MY FUEL FILTER HEAD IS LEAKING FUEL FROM THE HEATER CONNECTOR WHICH COULD EASILY RESULT IN A FIRE. MY CONNECTOR IS SOAKED IN DIESEL FUEL. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF THIS AMD OFFER SOME COURSE OF ACTION BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR KILLED.
A LETTER WAS SENT TO ME FROM CHRYSLER CONCERNING "SAFETY RECALL F23 LOWER BALL JOINTS". I HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER SEVERAL TIMES AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO ASSIST ME IN RESOLVING THIS "POTENTIAL "LIFE THREATENING" DEFECT ON MY VEHICLE. *JB
I WANTED TO INCLUDE MY VEHICLE INCIDENT IN REGARDS TO THE COMPLAINTS ON THE JEEP SUV FIRES. I THOUGHT IT WAS NECESSARY TO INCLUDE MY ENTRY, BECAUSE UNLIKE OTHER INCIDENTS MENTIONED IN THE INVESTIGATION, MY VEHICLE SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT FIRE WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT AND WAS NOT THE RESULT OF IMPACT FROM A CRASH. IT WAS A FRIDAY EVENING AND I WAS TRAVELING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR TRAVELING WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AT ABOUT 65 MPH. ALL OF THE SUDDEN, AND WITHOUT WARNING, MY VEHICLE STARTED LOSING SPEED AT A RAPID PACE. THANKFULLY, I WAS IN THE FIRST LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL IMMEDIATELY INTO THE BREAKDOWN LANE. ALL OF MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON AND WHILE I WAS LEANING OVER TO INSPECT WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE THE PROBLEM, THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BURST INTO FLAMES. I EXITED THE VEHICLE SWIFTLY AND LUCKILY A TOW TRUCK DRIVER WHO HAD SAW THE SMOKE IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911. THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES IN LESS THEN 5 MINUTES. HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE OR HAD CHILDREN RESTRAINED IN THE BACK SEAT, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES OR POSSIBLY A FATALITY. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO CHRYSLER AFTER GOING THROUGH MY INSURANCE. THERE RESPONSE WAS A POLITE LETTER TELLING ME THEY WERE SORRY FOR THE INCIDENT, BUT WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. THE VEHICLE WAS LESS THAN 2 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME AND SERVICED REGULARLY. THE FINDING OF THE FIRE DEPT.'S INSPECTION WAS INCONCLUSIVE, BUT I WAS TOLD IN CONFIDENCE THAT IT SEEMED MORE THAN LIKELY IT WAS A FAULTY ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE INCIDENT, I TOOK MULTIPLE PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE JEEP, WHICH INCLUDED UNDER THE HOOD SINCE WE SUSPECTED THE ENGINE WAS AT FAULT. THE 2005 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED CRD HAS HAD A RESIDUAL PROBLEM OF FLUCTUATING OF RPM'S (SHUTTERING) DURING IDLING, CREATING STALLING AT STOP LIGHTS WHEN THE BRAKES ARE ENGAGED ON A COLD ENGINE START. AT BUSY INTERSECTIONS WHEN THE BRAKES ARE ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE WILL UNEXPECTEDLY LURCH FORWARD AND USUALLY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO DIE IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. OUR 2005 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED CRD HAS HAD THE LOWER FRONT SUSPENSION BALL JOINTS REPLACED AS PART OF THE VEHICLE'S RECALL NOTICE. AT APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES, WE WENT TO AN INDEPENDENT TIRE SHOP FOR AN ALIGNMENT DUE TO POOR TIRE WEAR AND "WANDERING" CHARACTERISTICS WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE TIRE SHOP INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD A DEFECTIVE UPPER BALL JOINT AND COULD REPLACE THE FAILED UNIT WITH PERMISSION FROM THE DEALER. THE DEALER, MEDVED JEEP, DENIED THE CLAIM. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MEDVED WHO THEN CLAIMED THAT THE UPPER BALL JOINTS WERE NOT DEFECTIVE. AT APPROXIMATELY 37,000 MILES THE VEHICLE HAD A HIGHER FREQUENCY OF FRONT END CLUNKING, SO I TOOK IT BACK TO MEDVED WHO THEN CLAIMED THE NOISE WAS ONLY AN EXTRANEOUS BATTERY LOOSE UNDER THE SEAT. AT APPROXIMATELY 43,000 MILES, THE CLUNKING HAD BECOME DISTURBINGLY FREQUENT AND MORE SEVERE. I TOOK IT BACK TO MEDVED AND THEY NOW CONFIRM THAT IT'S A FAULTY UPPER BALL JOINT. HOWEVER, THEY CLAIM NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR NOT CORRECTING THE PROBLEM AT 30,000 MILES OR 37,000 MILES. THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART, AND FURTHERMORE, CALLED IN A CHRYSLER INSPECTOR WHO REPORTED THAT OUR 1-1/2" LIFT KIT CAUSED THE PROBLEMS WITH THE BALL JOINT. HOWEVER, THE BOOTS ON THE BALL JOINTS ARE STILL INTACT AND THERE IS NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE THAT INDICATES THE CAUSE OF THE BALL JOINT FAILURE (POOR MANUFACTURING VERSUS LIFT KIT). THERE HAS BEEN NO FORENSIC EVALUATION OF THE FAILURE. THE UPPER BALL JOINTS ON THIS VEHICLE HAVE A "RECORD" OF FAILURE PER ONLINE FORUMS. MANY FAILURES ARE ON VEHICLES WITHOUT LIFT KITS- POINTING TO LIKELY UNDERENGINEERED COMPONENT'S ON THE PART OF JEEP VERSUS PURELY SPECULATIVE CONCLUSIONS THAT OUR 1-1/2" LIFT KIT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE FAILURE. CAR WOULD START AND DIE OFF AFTER 1-2 MINUTES ( AS IN LACK OF FUEL). THERE HAD ALSO BEEN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL WARNING LIGHT FLASHING OCCASIONALLY. TO RE-START, THE FUEL PRIMER (LOCATED ON FILTER HEAD) HAD TO BE PUMPED. I READ ON WWW.LOSTKJS.COM FORUM IN THE CRD SECTION THAT AIR MIGHT LEAK INTO THE FILTER HEAD, CAUSING THESE SYMPTOMS. I NOTICED THAT THE FUEL HEATER PLUG LOCATED IN THE FILTER HEAD WAS MOIST. I PULLED THE PLUG AND HEARD A AIR-SUCKING SOUND. THE PLUG CONTAINED A MALE PART OF WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A BURNED-OUT FUEL HEATER, WHICH HAS MADE A HOLE INTO THE FILTER HEAD.
