NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Jeep Wrangler. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Oil cool on the top of the motor failed filling top of motor with oil and spilling over in back and front. This is a very common problem that should be looked at closer could easily get on exhaust causing a potential fire.
2014 jeep wrangler unlimited Sahara oil filter housing fail twice already. Causes oil to leak all over top of engine and then drips onto other components. Could cause fire, could cause engine to sieze, no warning lights to indicate an issue.
These are aftermarket , designed and marketed as for off-road use and used as up-fit parts on newly manufactured Jeep and Ram vehicles. I own five wheels and this far two wheels have developed hairline cracks and are leaking air. According to online forums/AEV forum, people claim this is a common issue. Since two wheels have developed hairline cracks in the exact same location, I believe it could be a nationwide unsafe situation for unsuspecting AEV wheel owners.
Oil Filter Housing failed leaking oil onto top of motor and hot exhaust manifold nearly causing a fire and catastrophic engine failure in heavy traffic. Dealer has confirmed this is a known issue on the 3.6 pentastar engines from after 2014. Currently replacement part has a 58000 unit back order. Failed with no warning until oil light and temp lights triggered.
Engine oil cooler failed. No warning lights or chimes. Problem found by smell of burning oil covering the intake valley and drainage from there onto the exhaust pipe throughout the underside of the vehicle. Can result in a vehicle fire. This is a known problem with the 3.6l jeep engine. This is a costly repair and replacement part of OEM quality or better is difficult to locate because of so many failures.
After a short drive to town I could smell oil burning .. Oil was Pouring on the the ground from under my jeep. I was told from the dealer it is a common problem on that motor and it was the OIL COOLER . It was cracked on the plastic part . I had it repaired and it cost me 800$ . There were no warning lamps . If I did not catch the problem in time the motor would have locked up.. the oil hitting the hot manifold could have caught fire .
According to the dealership the part for this recall is on indefinite back order with no eta of arrival I want to know why I can’t get my recall fixed if it’s saying parts are readily available
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the oil filter cap blew off the housing. As a result, the vehicle was losing oil. The contact noticed oil on the engine and smoke was detected. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact called the local dealer. However, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted but no further assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
3.6l Pentastar V6, vehicle had a failed oil cooler housing. This caused the vehicle to leak a considerable amount (more than a quart) of oil into the valley between the cylinder heads, but showed no outward signs of leaking oil. This has the potential to ignite a vehicle fire during operation. Could also potentially cause catastrophic engine failure secondary to oil starvation at highway speeds.
Engine oil leak, front of engine, under/at bottom of oil filter housing. Loss of oil from motor, oil all over under carriage of Jeep, found first on garage floor. Jeep has 62,000 miles on it. Oil on engine, transmission, transfer case and exhaust. Unit smoking, fire hazard. No warning lamps for low oil or low oil pressure.12
Smelled burning oil coming from the engine bay. Noticed a large amount of oil under the engine. Inspected the engine bay and there was a pool of oil under the oil filter housing. There was no CEL or warning. Checked oil and it was over a quart low. Oil spill under vehicle was large and dissipated in a wide area. A quick web search shows this is a common issue on the Chrysler Pentastar 3.6 engine. It is the OIL COOLANT HOUSING ASSEMBLY which is faulty. This causes oil to spill out and drip on the transmission and exhaust which causes the oil burning smell. There was a backorder on this part and I was informed that over 65K parts were manufactured and sold this past year which demonstrates that this is a known issue. Attempted to have dealership repair but could not book a date for months due to backlog and lack of availability. Took the vehicle to an independent shop that was very familiar with the issue and confirmed it was the oil coolant housing assembly without me mentioning what I thought it was. This was a $975 repair. Contacted manufacturer and they said they could not assist me as I need to take the vehicle to the dealership (only). However, I can't be without my vehicle for 60 days until they are able to "fit me in". Concerned about the burning of oil on the exhaust from a safety/fire perspective.
Concerning all Jeep Wrangler vehicles with the Pentastar 3.6L V-6 engine. These engines utilize variable valve timing with DOHC’s. Jeep dealers and owners are aware of a very common issue with bearing failures in these assemblies, resulting in damage to the camshafts requiring replacement of all 4 camshafts, 24 hydraulic lifters and 24 rocker assemblies. Approximate labor for this work is $1,220 plus parts cost of approximately $2,770. The issue is signaled by a loud tapping noise from one or both engine banks and typically occurs around or shortly after 80,000 miles though there are a number of reports that can be found where this issue appeared earlier. Jeep technicians diagnose the issue using a stethoscope and automatically assume all components will require replacement without further disassembly or investigation. An internet search will indicate just how prevalent this issue is. My vehicle is currently in the shop and I am told there are currently a total of three Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vehicles in said shop with the SAME issue.
With less than 30,000 miles, this car developed a "death wobble." At unpredictable moments, the whole car will start shaking and it is nearly impossible to control the steering wheel. Until you slow down to almost a stop, the shaking continues indefinitely. I've since discovered that this a known problem with Jeeps, but Jeep refuses to contribute a penny to fixing it.
Oil Filter assembly (FCA Pentastar 3.6L) started leaking oil and poured out over the back of the engine and got on the rear tires causing a loss of control of the vehicle. No warnings were indicated and the event occurred where my wife and others could have been hurt or killed.
The fuel neck into the fuel tank failed causing fuel to leak out of the vehicle. Upon inspection by 2 independent shops, it was determined that there was no physical damage or reason for the failure. The repair to the issue is for the entire fuel tank to be replaced at a cost of approximately $2,000. The vehicle has only 65,000 miles on it and used on highway driving conditions. The concern is that a manufacturing or design defect is the cause and because of the hazard created by the leak, is a serious issue and should be addressed by Jeep. Jeep has acknowledged that this issue should not occur and has offered some minimal assistance on repair costs, however my concern is with having to replace an entire fuel tank at 65,000 miles on a Jeep product and the safety concerns with the potential for this to occur without a root cause (other than product failure or defect). This should not be considered a 'wear and tear' part and have a much longer life than 65,000 miles. In addition, due to the design of the part, requires the entire fuel tank to be replaced at an excessive cost. The consumer expectation from Jeep is for a much more rugged, dependable and safe product which is what Jeep promises in their marketing and promise to consumers.
Clock Spring failed, Left multi function switch failed, air bag recall
When driving at Interstate Speeds (65-70), and any roadway imperfections (uneven pavement, pot holes, broken pavement) are hit, the vehicle will start to violently shake, will feel like you'll lose control and sometimes the vehicle fishtails. I did Google Searches on this to see if other Jeep Owners were having similar problems, and found many instances for this model year. They referred to this as the "death wobble". I took mine into the dealership and they did over $1000 worth of work to it, and it has helped it some. Not sure that it is completely fixed.
Clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel, has become bad and no longer works. This affects the horn’s ability to function.
The oil filter and oil cooler assembly is plastic with plastic gaskets. It will often crack, or the gaskets will shrink/crack over time, particularly in cold weather conditions. This causes oil to leak down onto other components, specifically the transmission, transfer case, etc. in the case of an accident this oil leak and oil soaked components can represent a fire hazard. Also can become an engine oil overheating issue as the oil cooling is not working properly. Repair requires complete disassembly of the air intake system and manufacturer only supplies the same faulty plastic parts. Repair is extremely costly and it is a known defect that has caused many parts shortages.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while the vehicle was running there was a ticking sound coming from the engine. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under an unknown Extended Warranty. The contact was referred to NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was 98,000.
Issue with lifters ticking at 49k miles
2014 JEEP WRANGLER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO NUMEROUS SAFETY ISSUES WITH VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD MOVE FROM SIDE TO SIDE. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER STATED THE WIRES WERE TOO SHORT. ALL 24 ROCKERS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TWICE. BOTH FRONT U JOINTS WERE REPLACED. THE ENGINE AND FUEL INJECTOR HARNESSES WERE REPLACED. THE ORIGNAL WIRES CRACKED AND SHORTED OUT. BOTH THE DRAG LINKS ENDS WERE REPLACED. THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT FAILED. THE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY BROKE FROM THE TRAC BAR.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Wrangler equipped with four Goodyear Tires. Tire line: Wrangler Fortitude HT, Tire Size: 27565R18.The contact stated that while driving the rear driver tire blew out without warning. The road patrol replaced the damaged tire. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. There were no reported injuries. The manufacturer was notified where informed to send in tire however, no further assistance was provided.. The tire mileage was unknown. The vehicle failure mileage was 100,062.
This is another complaint about the oil filter and oil cooler assembly problem that's known on the 2014 Wranglers. It's made of plastic (that cracks) with plastic gaskets (that shrink/crack over time). It's a known problem, has been reported by many, especially for vehicles in cold weather areas. Due to the location of the oil cooler assembly, it can't be easily replaced without spending over a thousand dollars and then the dealers don't stand behind or warranty the new part/their install because they know the replacement is just plastic and going to crack again. Oil leaks all over other engine components (transmission, transfer case, etc.), which could cause the vehicle to catch on fire; an accident due to the leaked on components being deteriorated and not working properly from being oil soaked; or cause the engine oil to overheat since the cooling assembly isn't working correctly. Repair requires complete disassembly of the upper engine and the OEM replacement is just another faulty plastic parts. Repairs are extremely costly IF you can even find parts. OEM had to know about this issue---plastic parts are never good and hopefully no one will get hurt because you could be driving a long time before you even know you have a problem.
I was driving the vehicle at 30 miles per hour and the engine accelerated to 60 miles per hour on it's own. before I could get it to stop. This occurred on 4 different occasions of the vehicle accelerating on it's own. The vehicle was only able to get under control by stepping on the brake hard placed the vehicle in neutral and shut off the Key. Some one could of been killed. No Dick Chrysler dodge stated they would have to drive it to see if there was an issue and charge an outrageous amount of money to determine if there was an issue. I know there is an issue. No one has inspected it as there was no accident There were no warning signs that came on. The first occurrence of the issue was on 8-
64000 miles oil filler housing cracked out of nowhere and started leaking oil all over the exhaust. smoke was coming off the exhaust into the jeep I was afraid the jeep would catch fire so i had to tow it home. this part made out of plastic is breaking on many jeeps because it is defective in design. it cannot do its job.oil leaking all over the road and onto hot exhaust is a dangerous result of this poorly designed part
Fuse box on right hand side of engine compartment caught fire and was smoldering. Jeep at time was turned off and in a parked position when this occurred. Tail lights were flashing and windshield wiper were going without being turned on. Remote would not unlock Jeep and entire cabin was filled with smoke. If I had been driving vehicle, I would have been unable to stop. Auto Gear Shifter locked up and I would have been unable to see how to drive due to amount of smoke entering cabin and all power components failing.
The other day I was changing the fluids in my transfer case and I noticed that the cv bolts were broken and coming out my Jeep is not lifted nor is there larger tires on it. If these all snapped the possibility the drive shift my fall out. If you contact me immediately I won't proceed with fixing the drive shaft if not I'm replacing it tomorrow.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 55-60 MPH, the vehicle shut off inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drove to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the failure was associated with the transmission. An unknown repair was completed. However, the failure reoccurred several months later. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic where an unknown repair was completed; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated while driving up a steep hill, the vehicle shut off, almost causing another heavy vehicle to crash into the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic where an unknown repair was completed. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V018000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect
Dealer reported crack in oil cooling housing. A burning oil and coolant smell starting in 2017, while under manufacturer warranty. I was concern that jeep would start a fire and began parking outside. I replace the oil cooler because I noticed a ticking sound. When I went to the dealer they informed the the engine is a total loss and needs to be replaced. Cylinders 1 and 6 failed. $8000 to replace the engine with a refurbished unit which addresses each of Chrysler’s failed 3.6 liter motor. If this manufactures oil cooler and other engine issues, do not need to be addressed, I don’t know what ever would need to be addressed.
IT STARTED WITH A SMALL OIL LEAK THAT TURNED INTO A BIG OIL LEAK COMING FROM THE OIL COOLER. THE HIGH THE TEMPERATURE THE MORE OIL THAT WOULD COME OUT. THIS OIL IS MIXED WITH COOLANT AS WELL. THIS IS NOT SAFE BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT'S GOING TO CRACK AND THEY WILL NOT COVER UNDER WARRANTY OR EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS CAN BE A REAL SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE YOU CAN LOSE OIL PRESSURE WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE TO FAIL.
LEAKING OIL FILTER HOUSING. IT'S A KNOWN PROBLEM AND SO WIDESPREAD ACROSS JEEPS THAT THERE'S A NATIONAL SHORTAGE OF THE PART. I CAN'T EVEN GET IT FIXED. OIL AND COOLANT ARE LEAKING EVERYWHERE. IT'S A DANGER TO MY FAMILY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
NOTICED AN OIL SPOT IN THE DRIVEWAY. TOOK THE JEEP TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS A CRACKED OIL COOLER. HE SAID THAT THIS IS THE THIRD ONE HE HAS SEEN AND THE SECOND IN 2 WEEKS. ON THE FIRST ONE HE DID HE SAID IT TOOK 6 WEEKS TO GET THE PART AND THAT HIS CUSTOMER DROVE 6 HOURS TO GET THE PART. THERE IS A SEVERE BACK ORDER ON THESE PARTS. I HAVE NOW BEEN WAITING FOR 3 WEEKS FOR MY MECHANIC TO GET THE PART. HE WAS TOLD BY CHRYSLER THAT THE NEXT EXPECTED DELIVERY WOULD AROUND MAY 3RD. THAT WILL BE 6 WEEKS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO USE MY VEHICLE. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND I AM FINDING THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT CHRYSLER HAS KNOWN ABOUT SINCE 2014. IT STARTED TO HAPPEN TO VEHICLES WITH LESS THAN 5,000 MILES ON THEM. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS PART. OR AT LEAST REDESIGN AND MAKE ENOUGH PARTS TO COVER THE DEMAND. WHY HAS THIS BEEN ALLOWED TO HAPPEN? $1000 TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM.
OIL FILTER HOUSING IS LEAKING OIL, AND THERE IS A HUGE BACKORDER ON THE PART
RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT NOT WORKING PROPERLY. ORIGINALLY IT WOULD WORK INTERMITTENTLY (WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THIS ISSUE) BUT NOW ITS NOT WORKING AT ALL(NO TAIL LIGHT, NO BLINKER). BULB IS GOOD(HAS BEEN CHANGED), FUSE IS GOOD ETC. I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE A GROUNDING OR WIRING HARNESS ISSUE BASED OFF THE DIAGNOSTICS I HAVE DONE. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN TRYING TO TROUBLE SHOOT THIS ISSUE.
FOUND OIL ALL OVER THE FLOOR OF MY GARAGE, HAD NOT DRIVEN JEEP. IT HAS JUST 30,000 MILES ON IT. BROUGHT TO DEALERS OVER 3 WEEKS AGO, THEY ARE STILL WAITING FOR A BACKORDERED PART. AND I AM WITHOUT MY JEEP. WAS TOLD 14,000 ON BACKORDER-IF ITS THAT BAD FOR BREAKAGE WHY IS THIS $1200+ REPAIR IS RECALL? I GOOGLED IT AND FOUND IT TO BE A BIG ISSUE.
OIL LEAK FROM THE OIL FILTER HOUSING CASE. JEEP WAS STATIONARY AND NOTICED AN OIL LEAK UNDER VEHICLE. PART IS ON BACKORDER. JEEP SWITCHED FROM USING METAL HOUSING TO PLASTIC WHICH CRACKS WITH COLDER WEATHER.
AT 63,000 MILES MY 2014 JEEP WRANGLER SPORT 4X4 STARTED LEAKING OIL REALLY BAD. LOOKED UP PROBLEMS PEOPLE HAVE WITH OIL LEAKS VIA THE INTERNET. FOUND OUT THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN A THOUSANDS OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS HAPPENING ALL OF A SUDDEN. TOOK IT TO A SHOP AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT IS LEAKING FROM A CRACKED "ENGINE OIL COOLER AND OIL FILTER HOUSING ADAPTER". CALLED AROUND FOR THIS PART AND ALL DEALERS HAD A BACK ORDER ON THIS PART AND DIDN'T KNOW WHEN THEY WOULD BE GETTING THEM IN. FINALLY LOCATED ONE FROM A DEALER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THROUGH A PERSON I KNEW PERSONALLY THAT WORKED FOR A DEALER. HE SAID THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 4,200 ORDERS FOR THIS PART IN JUST SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. THIS IS A VERY BIG PROBLEM! THIS CAN LEAD TO THE ENGINE CATCHING FIRE. ALSO A VERY EXPENSIVE COST FOR JUST THE PART AND THAN THEY STILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE UPPER AND LOWER INTAKE PLENUM GASKETS NEEDING REPLACEMENT WHEN THIS PART IS REPLACED. THE LEAKING OF OIL HAS BEEN HAPPENING OVER A WEEK OR SO.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NOTICED OIL LEAKING FROM THE OIL COOLER INTO THE ENGINE AND ONTO THE DRIVEWAY. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE OIL COOLER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE LOCAL DEALER CROWN CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM DUBLIN (6350 PERIMETER LOOP RD, DUBLIN, OH 43017, (888) 739-0282) AND LEFT A VOICEMAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,147.*DT*JB*JB
I NOTICED OIL LEAKING FROM MY JEEP, FOUND SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF OIL UNDER JEEP. IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT TO MY MECHANIC FOR REVIEW. THEY INDICATED THAT THE OIL COOLER WAS LEAKING A GOOD AMOUNT OF OIL AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE OVER 50,000 OIL COOLERS ON A 2 MONTH BACKORDER! MY MECHANIC SAID IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR ALL 2014 V6 ENGINES. JEEP FORUM ADDITIONALLY HAS THOUSANDS OF COMMENTS REGARDING THIS SAME ISSUE.
MAJOR OIL LEAK. TOOK TO MECHANIC. OIL COOLER NEEDS REPLACING. CHECKED ON JEEP FORUM, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. MECHANIC WENT TO ORDER PART 3-4 MONTHS FOR A REPLACEMENT. JEEP HAS A BACK ORDER PROBLEM. WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE AS IT COULD OVERHEAT AND CAUSE A FIRE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE THAT JEEP IS IGNORING.
NOTICE OIL LEAKS IN MY DRIVEWAY AND HAD IT CHECKED BY MECHANIC. FOUND OUT IT WAS THE OIL FILTER HOUSING/OIL COOLER AND THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 3.6 MOTOR ALSO, FOUND OUT THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER DUE TO A LOT OF CUSTOMERS HAVING SAME ISSUE.
MY OIL FILTER HOUSING HAS A LEAK AND NO ONE CAN GET THE PART. APPARENTLY THIS IS HAPPENING TO A LOT OF PEOPLE AS THE PART IS IN HIGH DEMAND. JEEP SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL.
MOPAR OIL COOLER HOUSING, WHICH HOUSES A COOLER AND OIL FILTER, SITS ON THE ENGINE AND HAS CRACKED, CAUSING OIL TO LEAK OUT OF IT. OIL LEAKS DOWN THE ENGINE AND ONTO THE TRANSMISSION HOUSING.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DUE TO THE COLD WEATHER, THE OIL COOLER FRACTURED WHILE STATIONARY AND PARKED IN A PARKING LOT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 109,000.
MY 2014 WRANGLER HAS THE DREADED OIL FILTER HOUSING / OIL COOLER LEAK. WHILE DRIVING I SMELLED BURNING OIL. THE NEXT MORNING I FOUND OIL ON MY GARAGE FLOOR AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. $875 TO REPLACE THE PART. IN RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ON LINE, I DISCOVERED THIS IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE AS THE MANUFACTURER CHOSE TO MAKE THE PART OUT OF PLASTIC.
SMELLED A OIL BURNING SMELL INSIDE THE CAB. NOTICED A DRIPPING OF OIL ON THE GROUND. TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THE OIL FILTER HOUSING WAS CRACKED. WHEN TRYING TO ORDER THE PART, WAS TOLD SEVERAL THOUSAND WERE ON BACK ORDER AND THEY HAD NO TIME FRAME TO GET ONE. I USE THIS VEHICLE FOR WORK AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHEN I CAN DRIVE MY VEHICLE. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
DURING THE WINTER STORM IN TEXAS TEMPERATURES WHERE BELOW 0. MY FAMILY WAS WITHOUT POWER AND NEED TO EVACUATE. AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE I STARTED TO SMELL BURNING OIL WITH THE ENGINE IDLING. I NOTICED THERE WAS ENGINE OIL DRIPPING FROM TRANSMISSION, DRIVESHAFTS AND SKID PLATES. I TRACED THE OIL BACK UP TO THE ENGINE AND THEN FURTHER TO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. THERE IS ENGINE OIL AND COOLANT POOLED IN THE VALLEY BETWEEN THE ENGINE HEADS, UNDERNEATH THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE OIL FILTER/COOLER ASSEMBLY IS LEAKING EITHER THE O-RINGS ARE BAD OR THE PLASTIC HOUSING HAS CRACKED. RESEARCHING I FOUND THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR SOME TIME. CLEARLY A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. WHY NO RECALLS? PLUS THE PART FROM RETAILERS STATE THE THE PART IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE.
RUNNING ERRANDS IN THE JEEP I STARTED TO SMELL BURNING OIL WHILE STOPPED WITH THE ENGINE IDLING. RETURNED HOME TO NOTICE THERE WAS ENGINE OIL DRIPPING FROM TRANSMISSION, DRIVESHAFTS AND SKID PLATES. I TRACED THE OIL BACK UP TO THE ENGINE AND THEN FURTHER TO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. THERE IS ENGINE OIL AND COOLANT POOLED IN THE VALLEY BETWEEN THE ENGINE HEADS, UNDERNEATH THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE DIAGNOSIS IS THE OIL FILTER/COOLER ASSEMBLY. EITHER THE O-RINGS ARE BAD OR THE PLASTIC HOUSING HAS CRACKED. THE JEEP IS OUT OF WARRANTY FOR BOTH THE BUMPER TO BUMPER AND THE POWERTRAIN. HOWEVER, THE JEEP HAS LESS THAN 50K MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE REPAIR WILL BE DONE BY MY SELF AS MY ABILITIES ARE COMPETENT AND I REFUSE TO PAY 1200.00 DOLLARS FOR A MECHANIC OR DEALERSHIP TO PERFORM THIS TASK, PARTICULARLY SEEING THE TOTAL COST OF PARTS IS LESS THAN 250.00. FCA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE AS LEAKS IN THE LUBRICATING AND COOLING SYSTEM COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE, VEHICLE FIRES, LOSS OF LIFE OR GREAT BODILY HARM AND HARM TO SURROUNDING INDIVIDUALS, PROPERTY AND/OR THE ENVIRONMENT. SOUNDS LIKE ENOUGH TO WARRANT A RECALL, IF YOU ASK ME.
