WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE DRIFTS ALL OVER THE LANE REQUIRING CONSTANT CORRECTING TO KEEP VEHICLE IN LANE. THE STEERING HAS A VERY LOOSE FEEL WHICH COULD CAUSE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL AND CRASH.
I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR ONE WEEK AND I NOTICED THE STEERING PROBLEM RIGHT AWAY. MOST OF MY DRIVING IS ON THE HIGHWAY, THIS VEHICLE HAS AN EXCESSIVE STEERING DEAD ZONE WHICH LEADS TO MAJOR OVER CORRECTING AND CONSTANT STEERING INPUT TO KEEP WITHIN A STRAIGHT LINE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE BUMPS, CRACKED, UNEVEN PAVEMENT, TURNING, WIND ETC. IT'S VERY A SCARY. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. MY SPEED DURING THIS IS BETWEEN 60-75.
THE STEERING REQUIRES CONSTANT CORRECTION TO DRIVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE STEERING WHEEL HAS EXCESSIVE PLAY.IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.
THERE IS 1 TO 2 INCHES OF PLAY IN THE STEERING. THE JEEP DRIFTS FROM ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO THE OTHER. YOU HAVE TO BE CONSTANTLY STEERING ARE YOU WILL END UP IN THE OTHER LANE OR OFF THE ROAD. IT NORMALLY HAPPENS ABOVE 35 MPH ON HIGHWAY.
MAJOR DEADSPOT AND A LOT OF PLAY IN STEERING. CONSTANT ADJUSTMENT IN STEERING WHEN DRIVING OVER 30MPH. WANDERS INTO OTHER LANE....ALMOST HAD ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE CONSTANT ADJUSTMENTS. BROUGHT IT TO DEALER AND NOTHING WAS FIXED.
MY CAR IS NOT STABLE ON THE ROAD AND I FEEL THE STEERING WHEEL PLAY THE DEALER SAID IT'S NEED ALIGNMENT AND THEY DO IT BUT STILL THE SAME.
I LOOKED UNDER MY BRAND NEW WRANGLER JL AFTER HEARING PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT BAD WELDS. SURE ENOUGH, MY WELDS ARE AWFUL. A JEEP SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THERE IS NO WAY THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LEAVE THE FACTORY. AS OF RIGHT NOW, JEEP HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING FOR ME. FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN THIS VEHICLE. I HOPE JEEP HAS A RECALL SOON. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE.
THERE IS EXCESSIVE PLAY (ABOUT 2 INCHES) IN THE STEERING. THIS LEADS TO ME HAVING TO CONSTANTLY CORRECT FOR IT WANDERING. THE WRANGLER I HAVE IS ALSO A MANUAL WHICH REQUIRES ME TO TAKE ONE HAND OFF THE WHEEL TO SHIFT. WHILE DOING SO IT IS NOT EASY TO KEEP THE VEHICLE STRAIGHT. I FEEL THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY ESPECIALLY.
REPORTED FRIGHTENING VIBRATION WITH LOSS OF VEHICLE STEERING CONTROL WHILE TRAVELING H AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE HIGHWAY IF THE CAR DRIVES OVER UNEVEN GROUND OR POT HOLES. REPORTED THE ISSUE TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY REFERRED TO IT AS A KNOWN ISSUE CALLED 'DEATH WOBBLE'. THEY REPAIRED THE DAMPER PER RECALL HOWEVER I AM NOW EXPERIENCING THE ISSUE AGAIN AND SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. CERTAINLY A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE.
VEHICLE STALLED IN HIGHWAY, STOP AND GO TRAFFIC FOR NO REASON AND WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO RESTART. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE RADIO AND BACKUP CAMERA WENT OUT AND CAME BACK AN HOUR OR SO LATER. THE RADIO, WHICH CONTROLS ALL ELECTRONICS AND BACKUP CAMERA, WENT OUT AGAIN. DEALER REPLACED SOME SORT OF INTERFACE FOR THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM (RADIO) ON 07/30/18. THEN VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN IN HIGHWAY, STOP AND GO TRAFFIC ON 08/03/2018 AND WAS DIFFICULT TO RESTART. THEN, ON 08/09/2018, A BATTERY CHARGE WARNING CAME ON AND THEY REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR. WHAT IS EVEN MORE TROUBLING, IS THESE VERY PROBLEMS ARE ALL OVER THE INTERNET. ALL WORK HAS BEEN COVERED UNDER WARRANTEE BUT I HAVE WASTED THE BETTER PART OF TWO FULL DAYS DRIVING TO/FROM THE DEALER OR WAITING IN THE WAITING ROOM. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH FCA (JEEP). IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM JEEP ENGINEERS HAVE DESIGNED FOR THESE WRANGLER RUBICON JLS IS FLAWED TO SAY THE LEAST.

STEERING WHEEL BRACKET NOW WELDED ON TO FRAME PROPERLY. IT HAS FALLEN OFF CAR CAUSING STEERING TO BE FLOATING AND DANGEROUS
AS DRIVING MY NEW JEEP I NOTICE I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE HANDLING .STEERING THE JEEP, TO MUCH PLAY ON STEERING, KIND OF A BIG TURN OFF COMING OFF.SPECIALLY ON THE MAINE HIGHWAYS WITH EXTRA PEOPLE IN THE CAR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE POWER STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ATLANTIC CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (130 SUNRISE HWY, WEST ISLIP, NY 11795, (631) 422-0123), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 1,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
BUILD DATE 2-2018 SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE IN EARLY MARCH 2018 AND HAVING DRIVEN OVER 5,000 MILES I CAN SAY THIS VEHICLE HAS AN EXCESSIVE STEERING DEAD ZONE WHICH LEADS TO MAJOR OVERCORRECTING AND CONSTANT STEERING INPUT TO KEEP WITHIN A STRAIGHT LANE. THIS PROBLEM IS AMPLIFIED WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (60+ MPH). ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE BUMPS, CRACKED/UNEVEN PAVEMENT, TURNING AND WIND AND THIS CREATES SOME NOT SO FUN SITUATIONS. THE SELLING DEALER SUGGESTED LOWERING TIRE AIR PRESSURE, WHICH I DID AND IT STILL DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM.
ISSUE WAS IDENTIFIED IMMEDIATELY UPON DELIVERY OF THE VEHICLE FROM THE SELLING DEALERSHIP. STEERING REQUIRES CONSTANT CORRECTION IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN A STRAIGHT LINE. ADDITIONALLY, THE STEERING RESPONSE 1 - 2" FROM CENTER IS NOT PRECISE AND RESULTS IN OVER-CORRECTIONS OF THE STEERING. THE SENSATION IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF TRYING TO DRIVE A STRAIGHT LINE THROUGH A FEW INCHES OF SNOW. THE SELLING DEALER ALLOWED ME TO DO A COMPARISON DRIVE WITH A LIKE MODEL (SAME MAKE, MODEL AND OPTIONS) AND A DIFFERENCE WAS ACKNOWLEDGED AND A SERVICE APPOINTMENT SCHEDULED. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT LATER INDICATED THAT THIS ISSUE IS "NORMAL" AND THAT IT WAS NOT UNUSUAL THAT THERE WOULD BE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MY VEHICLE AND THE COMPARISON VEHICLE. NAVIGATING TWO LANE ROADS AND HIGHWAYS, ALONG WITH NARROW CONSTRUCTION AREAS, ARE OF CONCERN GIVEN THE VEHICLE'S TENDENCY TO WANDER AND INACCURATE STEERING CORRECTIONS/OVER-CORRECTIONS.
STEERING WHEEL GOT LOCKED IN PLACE GOING AT HIGH SPEEDS ON FREEWAY. HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 3 TIMES NOW. FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED VEHICLE WAS GOING ABOUT 65 MPH ON A CURVE. ALSO, HAS EXCESSIVE SWERVING WHEN VEHICLE IS ON HIGHWAY.
JEEP WRANGLER JL HAS POOR WELDS ON THE FRAME AROUND MAJOR COMPONENTS THAT WILL APPEAR TO FAIL. 2 WELDS APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN POORLY REPAIRED DURING MANUFACTURE AND ARE RUSTING AT MAJOR CONNECTION POINTS TO SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THIS WILL LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. RECOMMEND INVESTIGATION BY NHTSA AND RECALL. I AM CURRENTLY PURSUING LEMON LAW IN NORTH CAROLINA. 'POOR TRACK BAR BRACKET WELDS THAT HAVE BROKEN AND WILL CAUSE COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING. 'POROUS WELDS EXCEEDING SAFETY STANDARDS THAT COULD LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. 'SLAG ON NEARLY EVERY WELD ON THE FRAME WHICH PAINT WILL NOT ADHERE TO. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE RUSTING OF THE FRAME AT THE WELDS LEADING TO POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. 'LACK OF PENETRATION ON SOME WELDS THAT COULD LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC FAILURE 'OVER PENETRATION ON SOME WELDS THAT COULD LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC FAILURE 'OVERWELD OR WELD DRIP ON SEVERAL WELDS 'WELD SPLASH ON VARIOUS PART OF THE FRAME THAT WILL RESULT IN LACK OF LONG TERM PAINT ADHERENCE AND INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF RUSTING OF THE FRAME.
VEHICLE HAS VERY UNSAFE WELDS AT NUMEROUS LOCATIONS ON FRAME. MOST ALL WELDING POINTS SHOW SLAG, POROSITY, SPLATTER WITH SOME ACTUALLY NOT EVEN COMPLETE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS JEEP AND REFUSE TO LET ANYONE OTHER THAN MYSELF RIDE IN OR DRIVE IT. WHILE FCA (JEEP) HAS ISSUED A RECALL ADDRESSING POOR WELDS AT THE TRACK BAR MOUNTING BRACKET LOCATION ON A LIMITED NUMBER OF 2018-2019 JEEP WRANGLER'S (MINE WAS NOT INVOLVED, EVEN THOUGH THE WELDS ARE INSUFFICIENT), THEY NEED TO FURTHER ADDRESS THE ALL OF THE WELDING DEFICIENCIES LOCATED THROUGHOUT THIS VEHICLES FRAME. I PRAY THE NHTSA TAKES MY (AS WELL AS OTHERS I'M SURE) COMPLAINT(S) REGARDING THIS ISSUE IN ALL SERIOUSNESS AND INVESTIGATES FURTHER BEFORE PEOPLE START GETTING HURT OR EVEN KILLED. THANK YOU.
JEEP WRANGLER JL SPORT (2 DR) BUILD DATE 6/18 PURCHASED 7/18 CURRENTLY 1243 MILE ON THE ODOMETER. SINCE THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE DEALER THE VEHICLE CONSTANTLY WANDERS LEFT AND RIGHT REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE OF ROAD SURFACE. I RECENTLY TOOK THE JEEP ON A STRAIGHT AND LEVEL ROAD AND COULD NOT TRAVEL MORE THAN 25 YARDS AT 45 MPH WITHOUT MOVING THE STEERING WHEEL AT LEAST 1.5 INCHES. I HAVE ADJUSTED THE TIRE PRESSURE UP AND DOWN FROM THE FACTORY SETTING WITH NO CHANGE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THE JEEP JL, IT IS DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN ITS OWN LANE CREATING CONTROL PROBLEMS. THE PROBLEM INTENSIFIES WITH SPEED
I PURCHASED MY WRANGLER AND ABOUT 4 MONTHS AFTER HAVING IT NOTICED UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKING WHEN GOING OVER 50 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND HITTING A BUMP. ONCE THE SHAKING STARTED I WOULD HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO AT LEAST 45 OR 50 TO GET IT TO STOP. MY WRANGLER HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 4 TIMES BEFORE FINALLY BEING FIXED. WE ARE GOING ON 6 MONTHS SINCE THIS WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED AND IT IS NOW DOING IT AGAIN. HOWEVER NOW IT HAS A SHAKE EVERY TIME I HIT A BUMP NOT JUST WHEN I AM GOING FASTER THAN 50 MPH. I AM GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE MY WRANGLER IN FRO THE 5TH TIME AND HOPE THAT IT GETS FIXED.
THE STEERING ON MY JEEP REQUIRES CONSTANT ADJUSTMENT TO MAINTAIN A LANE. VEHICLE DRIFTS LEFT AND RIGHT.
THE DRIVER'S SEAT EMITS A TERRIBLE SQUEAKING NOISE. I TOOK IT TO ONE DEALER WHO DIDN'T FIX IT. THEN TO A SECOND. I'M STILL WAITING ON A PART AND IT'S BEEN TWO WEEKS. IT WILL BE FIVE WEEKS WITH THIS PROBLEM BEFORE THEY EVEN ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE IT. I'VE OWNED THE CAR FOR THREE MONTHS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE SERVICE STABILITY CONTROL AND PASSENGER AIR BAG WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. ADDITIONALLY, THE 'UNTIL YOU REACH A DESIRED LOCATION YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SHIFT AGAIN UNTIL SERVICED' WARNING MESSAGE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER (STRAUB CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM, 1502 WHEELING AVE, GLEN DALE, WV 26038, 855-518-0395), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 831.
SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE IN EARLY JULY 2018 AND HAVING DRIVEN 550 MILES I CAN SAY THIS VEHICLE HAS AN EXCESSIVE STEERING DEAD ZONE WHICH LEADS TO MAJOR OVERCORRECTING AND CONSTANT STEERING INPUT TO KEEP WITHIN A STRAIGHT LANE. THIS PROBLEM IS AMPLIFIED WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (60+ MPH). ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE BUMPS, CRACKED/UNEVEN PAVEMENT, TURNING AND WIND AND THIS CREATES AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION WHICH COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY TO MYSELF OR OTHERS. THIS VEHICLE HAS A DANGEROUS "BOBBLE" OR SWAY AND DRIVING AT FASTER POSTED SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY ON MORE NARROW ROADS IS QUITE DANGEROUS. THE AMOUNT OF FORCE TO CORRECT TO STAY IN CENTER LANE IS UNLIKE ANY VEHICLE IN MY ALMOST 40 YEARS OF DRIVING I HAVE ALSO OWNED 3 OTHER JEEP WRANGLERS SO I KNOW HOW THEY DRIVE. OTHERS HAVE MENTIONED THIS COULD BE EITHER A STEERING GEARBOX OR COMPUTER FLASH ISSUE. I DID NOT PAY OVER $40,000 FOR AN UNSAFE TO DRIVE VEHICLE. MY VACCUM BOOSTER FAILED. MY SON WAS DRIVING MY JEEP THAT ONLY HAS 2000 MILES ON IT. HE WAS DRIVING IN DRY WARM CONDITION. HE DROVE IN THE SUBURBS ON A MAIN STREET. HE HIT THE BRAKES AND NOTHING HAPPENED WHICH CAUSED HIM TO REAR END SOMEONE. EDR REPORT HAS BEEN DONE. INSURANCE HAS INVESTIGATED AND WELL. UNFORTUNATELY CHRYSLER WONT OWN UP TO THE FACT THAT THE VACCUM BOOSTER WAS FAULTY.
THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR RECALL RELATED TO THE TRACK BAR WELDS ON THE JL MODEL WRANGLERS AND WHEN I SEARCH MY VIN IT IS NOT INCLUDED BUT MANY OF THE WELDS ON MY FRAME ARE RUSTING ALREADY AND APPEAR TO BE "BAD" WELDS. I AM A PROFESSIONAL WELDER AND I KNOW WHAT A GOOD WELD LOOKS LIKE. PLEASE HELP ME ADDRESS THE ISSUE WITH THE MANY "BAD" WELDS ON MY BRAND NEW JEEP.
THE STEERING IS NOT RESPONSIVE AND HAS ABOUT A 1-2 INCH DEAD SPOT OF WIGGLE GAB BEFORE THE STEERING CAN RESPOND TO YOUR DRIVING
TOO MUCH PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL, DEAD ZONE BETWEEN 11:00 AND 1:00. HAVE TO DRIVE WITH TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL AT ALL TIMES TO KEEP IT IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND FEELS DANGEROUS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. DEALERSHIP SAYS COLUMN FLASH IS UP TO DATE AND IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. IF THAT INDEED IS THE CASE, THEN IT'S A BAD DESIGN. BEEN WAITING 8 MONTHS TO HEAR OF A FIX BUT NOTHING AS OF 3/07/2019.
THIS IS IN REFERENCE A DEAD SPOT WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS CENTERED AND I'M GOING OR TRYING TO GO STRAIGHT ON THE ROAD. IT IS NOTICEABLE AT ALL TIMES BUT BECOMES UNSTABLE AT 50+MPH. IT IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE STRAIGHT BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL HAS PLAY IN IT BEFORE THE WHEELS ACTUALLY TURN. MY JLUR WAS LIFTED AT THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE DELIVERY USING THE MOPAR 2" LIFT KIT. I BROUGHT THE JEEP TO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED AN UPGRADED STEERING STABILIZER BECAUSE OF THE LIFT. THEY ADDED PART NUMBER 77072360 AT A COST OF $461.80. I HAVE DRIVEN THE JEEP SINCE THEN AND THE STEERING PLAY IS STILL THERE. A WEEK LATER I PUT NEW TIRES ON MY JEEP THINKING IT MAY HELP REDUCE THE DEAD SPOT CONDITION ON THE STEERING BUT IT DID NOTHING, IT FEELS EXACTLY THE SAME. THE NEW TIRES ARE 35 X 12.5 R17. STOCK TIRES WERE 33.
VEHICLE DELIVERED WITH EXCESSIVE STEERING WHEEL PLAY. ABOUT 10 DEGREES+ OF FREE PLAY. AFTER MULTIPLE VISITS TO DEALER, AND REPLACEMENT OF STEERING GEARBOX, IT IS LESS, ABOUT 5 DEGREES OF FREE PLAY. DEALER AND JEEP WAVE HAVE TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING MORE THEY CAN DO. I WOULD SEND/UPLOAD A SHORT VIDEO (MP4) THAT SHOWS THIS, BUT IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT IS AN OPTION.
WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE FOR THE THIRD TIME IN TWO DAYS AFTER PICKING UP THE CAR FOLLOWING A PCM FLASH FOR A CRUISE CONTROL RECALL, I NOTICED THE PRND LIGHTS FLASHING ON THE SHIFTIER APPROXIMATELY 10 SECONDS AFTER VEHICLE START. I SUBSEQUENTLY RECEIVED A CEL AND A "SERVICE SHIFTER' MESSAGE. I SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE, LET ALL DISPLAYS GO DARK, AND RESTARTED; THE CEL WENT AWAY. I PROCEEDED TO CONTINUE MY DRIVE HOME. ABOUT 10/15 MIN LATER, I NOTICED THE LIGHTS FLICKERING ONCE AGAIN ON THE SHIFTER. I ONCE AGAIN ELECTED TO CONTINUE HOME AS IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT. APPROXIMATELY 2/3 MILES LATER, I RECEIVED ERRORS ON THE START/STOP AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS. THE VEHICLE APPEARED TO GO INTO A "LIMP MODE" - I IT WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 8TH GEAR AND I EXPERIENCED REDUCED POWER AND AN INABILITY TO MAINTAIN THE POSTED 70 MPH. I DECIDED TO EXIT AT THE NEXT OFF-RAMP AS I COULD MAINTAIN 65MPH. WHILE EXITING, I NOTICED THE GAUGE NEEDLES (SPEEDO AND TACH) SWEEP AND GOT AIRBAG WARNINGS. I HEARD THE ELECTRIC FAN GO 100% HIGH (VERY LOUD) AND I LOST POWER STEERING. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE. AFTER LETTING IT SIT FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MIN, I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND WHILE THE CEL REMAINED NO OTHER ERRORS WERE ILLUMINATED OR PRESENTED. I WAS LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM A JEEP DEALER AND DECIDED TO TRY TO CONTINUE THERE ON ACCESS ROADS. ABOUT 1/8 MILE DOWN THE ROAD, I ONCE AGAIN LOST POWER STEERING AND SAY VARIOUS ERROR MESSAGES LIKE BEFORE. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND ABORTED MY ATTEMPTS AND CALLED FOR A TOW TO THE DEALER LESS THAN A MILE AWAY. POSTED ARE PICTURES OF THE ERRORS READ USING AN OBD-2 SCANNER I HAD IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. WHILE I HAVE DRIVEN CARS WITHOUT POWER STEERING IN THE PAST, IT WAS RATHER DIFFICULT WITH THE LARGER ~32" TIRES AND I AM NOT SURE A CRASH COULD BE PREVENTED IF A SMALLER PERSON WAS DRIVING.
STEERING GEAR BOX LOCKS UP OCCASIONALLY WHILE TRYING TO TURN, INHIBITING A TURN FROM BEING MADE WHILE MOVING. SEEMS TO ONLY HAPPEN WHEN IT IS HOT.
I WAS STOPPED AT A 4 WAY LIGHT IN MARION ILLINOIS, HAD MY JEEP IN NEUTRAL WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I PUSHED THE CLUTCH IN AND THE ENGINE DIDN'T COME BACK ON. I TRIED FOR OVER FIFITEEN MIN. TO GET IT ON. FINALLY CALLED A TOW AND HAD IT TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT I ORDERED IT THROUGH NOT EVEN 30 DAYS AGO. THEY DIDN'T LOOK AT IT UNTIL 4 DAYS LATER AND SAID THEY COULDN'T RECREATE THE ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS WITH THE PUSH START ENGINES. I HAVE A MANUAL W/O ELECTRIC DOORS SO NO AUTO START ON A KEY FOB. I ONLY HAD 204 MILES ON IT!! THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY'VE HAD SEVERAL PEOPLE TAKE IT OUT FOR DRIVES TO RECREATE THE ISSUE TO NO AVAIL. I BOUGHT /ORDERED AND FULLY PAID FOR A BRAND NEW 2018 JEEP TO NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES ARISE. NOW I'M SCARED TO DRIVE IT ANYWHERE!
TRACK BAR BRACKET AND OTHER WELDS ARE VERY POORLY DONE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS MALFUNCTION OR INJURY. WELDS HAVE POOR POROSITY WITH PINHOLES, SLAG INCLUSIONS, LACK OF FUSION, UNDERFILL, ETC. THE WELDS ON MY NEW 2018 JEEP RUBICON JLU THAT COST $52,000 ARE ALL MALFORMED. I DON'T SEE HOW THERE COULD HAVE BEEN AN INSPECTION PASS ON THESE WELDS, AS THEY ARE DANGEROUS. I'VE HAD THEM INSPECTED BY TWO PROFESSIONAL WELDERS WITH A COMBINED 45 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND THEY BOTH IMMEDIATELY AGREED. ONE USER ON THE JL WRANGLER FORUMS WITH VERY SIMILAR WELDS HAD A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE TRACK BAR BRACKET AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED (HIGHWAY POSTED SPEEDS) AND WAS SOMEHOW ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT KILLING HIMSELF OR ANYONE ELSE. THIS POST CAN BE FOUND ON JL WRANGLER FORUMS DOT COM, SEARCH FOR "TRACK BAR SHEARED OFF AT THE WELD" THE TRACK BAR BRACKET WELD ON MY JEEP DOESN'T COVER THE TOP OF THE BRACKET BUT INSTEAD THE WELD SITS ALMOST ON TOP OF THE BRACKET EDGE AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE ADDED PICTURES. THE SIDE WELDS ARE SIMPLY WELD BLOBS AND DO NOT FOLLOW ANY WELD STANDARDS. THIS IS SIMPLY DANGEROUS AND SHOWS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED WHEN LEAVING THIS STAGE OF THE BUILD FROM FCA. JUST TO NOTE, MOST ALL OTHER WELDS THAT WERE VISUALLY INSPECTED ARE JUST AS POORLY DONE. *TR
HELLO , I HAVE ABOUT 1,700 MILES ON MY JLUR AND THE STEERING ISSUE IS SO FRUSTRATING.THIS PAST WEEK I TOOK A ROAD TRIP AND FOUND MYSELF MAKING CORRECTIONS CONSTANTLY. ... ON GOING SINCE PURCHASE. THE ISSUE SEEMS TO BE A DEAD SPOT/PLAY AT CENTER WHERE IT TAKES CONSTANT BACK AND FORTH..NOT AS BAD UNDER 50 MPH..ON A SIDE STREET..GETS WORSE ABOVE 50 MPH ON A FREEWAY. STEERING HAS NEVER BEEN RIGHT. MY WIFE WILL NOT DRIVE IT. I TOOK TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE NO HELP THEY JUST INDICATED THAT'S HOW THEY DRIVE.....NOT TRUE. I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT RESOLVED.I AM HOPING THIS IS POSSIBLY A STEERING BOX ISSUE- REPLACEMENT OR ADJUSTMENT .THERE ARE REPORTS OF THIS RESOLVING THE ISSUE. STEERING ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGHER SPEEDS (60 MPH+) HAS A DEAD ZONE AND THE JEEP WANDERS BACK AND FORTH, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND VERY DANGEROUS/FEELS AS IF I COULD LOSE CONTROL. SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FOR SAME ISSUE ON NHTSA FROM OTHER 2018 JL OWNERS. NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND A SAFETY RECALL INITIATED TO CORRECT AS NO DEALERSHIPS ARE FIXING THE ISSUE. COULD CAUSE ACCIDENT AND FATALITY AND EXTREME LIABILITY FOR FCA.
THE VEHICLE DRIFTS DEPENDING ON SPEED AND ROAD CONDITIONS AND DOES NOT ALIGN ITSELF. THIS IS CURRENTLY UNSAFE ESPECIALLY WITH WINDY CONDITIONS. IN ADDITON, THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT HAVE AFFECTED BOTH THE START/STOP OR ECO MOOD NOT TO WORK AND CAUSES THE SCREEN TO FUNCTION SLOWLY IN A DELAYED MOTION.
THE 2018 JEEP JL HAVE ELECTRONIC STEERING CONTROL AND PAST 60MPG, IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO STEER TO THE RIGHT. THE STEERING STICKS AND I HAVE TO MUSCLE IT TO GET IT TO STEER TO THE RIGHT WHICH HAS MADE ME ALMOST GET INTO SEVERAL ACCIDENTS.
WHEN THIS DANGEROUS INCIDENT OCCURRED, I HAD MY DAUGHTER AND TWO GRANDCHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE WITH ME AND WE WERE TRAVELING ON A FOUR-LANE, DIVIDED HIGHWAY. I WAS PREPARING TO MOVE FROM THE INSIDE TO THE OUTSIDE LANE OF TRAVEL IN ANTICIPATION OF MAKING A RIGHT-HAND TURN. WHEN I BEGAN TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT, IT FELT LIKE THE STEERING WAS LOCKED AND IT WAS ONLY WITH A GOOD DEAL OF FORCE THAT I WAS ABLE TO COMPLETE MY LANE CHANGE. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO APPLY ENOUGH FORCE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY NOT APPLYING TOO MUCH SO AS TO CAUSE MYSELF TO OVERSTEER AND POTENTIAL LEAVE THE ROADWAY. WHEN I GOT TO THE INTERSECTION WHERE I NEEDED TO MAKE MY RIGHT-HAND TURN, I AGAIN HAD TO APPLY A GOOD DEAL OF FORCE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND COMPLETE MY TURN. THIS CONDITION CONTINUED UNTIL I ARRIVED HOME SOME FIVE TO TEN MILES AWAY. I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE THAT IT WAS VERY HOT THAT AFTERNOON (APPROXIMATELY 95F). I HAVE READ THAT JEEP IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND THAT THE PRIME SUSPECT IN THE CAUSE OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE IS THE NEW ALUMINUM STEERING GEAR BOX THEY INTRODUCED ON THIS MODEL. THE FACT THAT ALUMINUM HAS A GREATER THERMAL EXPANSION RATE THAN THE PREVIOUSLY USED STEEL STEERING GEARBOXES CERTAINLY WARRANTS THIS SUSPICION. I HAVE ALSO READ THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAS HAD SEVERAL "CONFIRMED REPAIRS" OF THIS "STEERING LOCKUP" ISSUE BY REPLACING THE STEERING GEARBOX WITH A RUMORED NEW, MODIFIED ONE. WITH THESE CONSIDERATIONS IN MIND, I BELIEVE THE HIGH TEMPERATURES OF THAT DAY CONTRIBUTED TO THE EXPANSION OF MY JEEP'S ALUMINUM GEARBOX CAUSING IT TO BIND UP AND LOCK THE STEERING. A FURTHER INDICATION THAT THIS MIGHT BE THE CASE IS THE FACT THAT HOURS LATER AFTER BOTH THE VEHICLE AND THE AMBIENT TEMPERATE HAD COOLED, THE STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL.
PURCHASED MY 2018 BILLET SILVER, 4-DOOR WRANGLER RUBICON JL ON JULY, 2 2018. BUILD DATE IS 2/2018 FOR THE VEHICLE. I NOTICED THE EXCESSIVE NEED TO OVERCORRECT THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN I DROVE IT HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I TEST DROVE IT EARLIER IN THE DAY ON A 4 LANE, SPLIT HIGHWAY AND IT WAS ALMOST ENTIRELY A STRAIGHT HIGHWAY DRIVE, SO I DIDN'T NOTICE IT MUCH ON THE VERY SHORT TEST DRIVE AS I DID DRIVING THE JEEP HOME LATER IN THE EVENING ON A MUCH MORE NARROW, TWO LANE COUNTRY ROAD. THE ISSUE IS EXACTLY LIKE MANY WHO HAVE DESCRIED THE ISSUE IN THE JL WRANGLER FORUMS ONLINE (OVER 570 POSTS AS OF THIS COMPLAINT FILING) WHO'VE DESCRIBED THE WHEEL BEING UNRESPONSIVE WITH LOTS OF LEFT/RIGHT MICRO CORRECTING TO STAY IN CENTER LANE. WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AND ON EVEN PAVEMENT I CAN MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL APPROXIMATELY 5-7 DEGREES AND THE WHEELS AND DIRECTION IS UNRESPONSIVE. THERE WAS A TIME OR TWO DRIVING HOME WHEN I WOULD COME OUT OF A SLIGHT DIP OR BUMP IN THE ROAD AND THE JEEP WOULD COME OUT OF THE DIP, START TRACKING TOWARDS AN ONCOMING CAR OR CENTER LANE, AND CORRECTING THE WHEEL BACK TO THE RIGHT AND AWAY FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC REALLY TOOK A LOT OF EFFORT. TIRE PRESSURE IS TO SPEC AT 37PSI IN ALL FOUR TIRES. THIS VEHICLE HAS A DANGEROUS "BOBBLE" OR SWAY AND DRIVING AT FASTER POSTED SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY ON MORE NARROW ROADS IS QUITE DANGEROUS. THE AMOUNT OF FORCE TO CORRECT TO STAY IN CENTER LANE IS UNLIKE ANY VEHICLE IN MY ALMOST 30 YEARS OF DRIVING.
I NOTICE WHEN DRIVING ON 2 LANE HIGHWAYS AND MEETING BIGGER VEHICLES THE HOOD COMES UP AND IT APPEARS AS IF THE RUBBER LATCHES ARE GOING TO SNAP. IT WILL ABSOLUTELY STARTLE YOU AND I COULD SEE IT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THERE IS NO WAY A HOOD SHOULD LIFT UP AS MUCH AS IT DOES. THIS OCCURS AT ANY SPEED OVER 50MPH WHEN MEETING OTHER VEHICLES AND IS WORSE THE BIGGER THE OTHER VEHICLE IS.

STEERING IS LOOSE. JEEP WANDERS WITHIN THE LANE AND YOU ARE REQUIRED TO CHASE IT. STEERING IS MOST DIFFICULT IN THE 45-60 ZONE. IT FEELS THERE IS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. YOU CAN TURN IT 1/2'+ ANY DIRECTION BEFORE THE WHEELS RESPOND. DROVE IT FOR 46 MILES AND TOOK BACK TO DEALER BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND GAVE IT BACK 3 DAYS LATER. VEHICLE ORIGINALLY DELIVERED WITH TIRES INFLATED TO 44 PSI. I LOWERED THEM TO 36 PSI AS RECOMMENDED ON THE DOOR FRAME AND IT REDUCED THE WANDERING BY ALMOST HALF BUT STILL IS A VERY LOOSE STEERING VEHICLE.

WHEN HITTING A BUMP ON THE HIGHWAY (FOR EXAMPLE- BRIDGE SEAMS) AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (55 MPH+) THE JEEP WILL SHUDDER AND SHAKE, PARTICULARLY THE STEERING WHEEL & FRONT END AT TIMES; SOMETIMES WHEN HITTING A SERIES OF BUMPS THE SHUDDERING WILL INTENSIFY AND IS MORE DIFFICULT TO STOP. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE SHUDDERING IS TO SLOW DOWN TO SPEEDS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY UNSAFE ON THE HIGHWAY - <30 MPH.
2018 JEEP WRANGLER JLU SPORT. THE RECENT 5 INCH RADIO FIRMWARE UPDATE HAS CAUSED THE RADIOS TOUCHSCREEN TO BECOME UNCOMFORTABLY HOT TO THE TOUCH. AFTER THE UPDATE THE RADIO REFUSES TO SHUT OFF. IT WILL ALSO UNEXPECTEDLY SHUT OFF AND THE BACKUP CAMERA WILL STOP FUNCTIONING TEMPORARILY. THERE ARE ALSO MANY OTHER NON SAFETY ISSUES THAT JEEP SEEMS TO WANT TO IGNORE WITH THIS RADIO LIKE THE LACK OF RECEPTION BOTH TERRESTRIAL AND SATALLITE, THE LACK OF DISPLAYABLE CHARACTERS, THE FREEZING OF THE RADIO TO BLUE SCREEN, AND THE LAG IN THE TOUCH SCREEN AND VOLUME. JEEP REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AND HAS SAID THAT THERE WILL NOT BE ANOTHER UPDATE UNTIL OCTOBER. SEEMS TO ME THAT WHEN YOU BUY A VEHICLE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WAIT SIX MONTHS FOR A WORKING RADIO.

THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS STARTED AND STATIONARY AND AGAIN APPROXIMATELY EVERY 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING. THIS IS A BIG ISSUE FOR ME AS I AM ALLERGIC TO MOLDS. JEEP SEEMS TO BE BLOWING OFF THE ISSUE AND REFUSES TO DO MUCH ABOUT IT.
