NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Jeep Wrangler. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I was driving on the highway with my daughter with dry normal conditions approximately 65-70mph when all of a sudden the jeep downshifts into 1st gear causing an extreme deceleration almost to a complete stop. I had a dead gas pedal and could not accelerate to get to a safe area or shoulder. The problem stopped after I came to a complete stop. My Jeep has been in the shop many times with unrelated issue. I did notify dealer they just brushed it off. It is in the dealership now with oil leak and mentioned transmission issue occured again and this time I made sure they wrote down exactly what happened and I feel extremely unsafe driving this car.
I woke up one morning about 2 months ago, and the dash cluster was not working and has not worked since. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My safety and the safety of others are put at risk because I am unable to see critical information while driving, such as my speed, fuel level, and any potential engine warning lights. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem was confirmed by two different independent mechanics, both of whom stated that I need a new cluster. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or any other party besides the two mechanics. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms before the cluster failed. The failure occurred suddenly.
Car it is leaking oil .
Problem seems to be within the steering component. While driving it wanders back and forth pretty bad. Yes it would available for inspection if requested. It has not been confirmed by a dealer but i have reed many complaints about the same problem.I think it is dangerous the way it wanders.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that occasionally while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal gasoline odor entering the cabin of the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the fuel supply line was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V665000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); as a possible cause for the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
The vehicle will randomly show service shifter then it will loose power steering, gears won’t change. It happened while driving on a winding road. Scary. The instrument cluster will show random erratic readings like mileage will be off. Temperature goes to zero fuel gauge misread vehicle get stuck into a higher gear and won’t downshift doing research online I found a recall bulletin for 24V652000 and in that bulletin, it describes what my vehicle does, but my vehicle is not considered part of the recall bulletin. This vehicle is dangerous to drive on the road with the situation that can happen at any time.
Instrument cluster failed. Jeep required me to send them the entire cluster (Vehicle Dash) in order for us to order new part. Submitting the cluster means I do not have access to the manual gages (speed, warning lights, and fuel gage). You also cannot hear your blinker signal or know if your high beams are on or off. You do not know how much gas in your tank and can run out at any given point (I have pictures of police helping as this happen to me; it is dangerous). There is an open file i have with jeep. They are aware of the issue. I told the dealership in Sept of 2024 it was flickering and they said it wasn't doing it when they had it serviced so there was nothing they could do. I took it in to another mechanic in May of 2025 once it was failed completely. Jeep informed my mechanic in May the part would be in. Then they emailed me (once i filed a compliant with their customer service )the part would be in by End of Aug. Now they are saying the End of September (subject to change). I requested a loaner vehicle in order to keep my family safe and they denied my request. The car was bought brand new and cannot be inspected until the dash is replaced. Jeep has old dash and has not provided me with the replacement part (I already paid for). It is dangerous. The reason we are told the part is not available is because many 2020 jeeps are having same issue.
Had to take my 2020 wrangler in to have accessory battery replaced as it had drained my newly purchased battery and my car wouldn’t start. Repair shop replaced both batteries and about a week later the check engine light came on for about 2 minutes then went off so I chalked it up to the battery replacement. It didn’t come back on again until about 3 weeks later when I started feeling a slip when going in to second gear. When I got home after having that issue I noticed a small collection of what looked to me like transmission fluid on my garage floor so I had the car towed to the repair shop again. They informed me that engine oil was mixing with coolant due to a bad oil cooler. Between that diagnosis and my car completely breaking down and cracking my engine block the car was driven a total of 14 miles at the most. There was never any other signs prior to me taking it to the shop that the oil cooler had gone bad and even when they replaced the batteries no codes came up for the bad oil cooler and nobody noticed anything while working in the area. . Since then I have learned that this has been an ongoing issue with the wrangler since at least 2012 models and there has been several class action suits that were settled out of court I’m assuming so they don’t have to spend the money recalling and repairing every affected vehicle and finding a fix for future models. Meanwhile I have only had my car for 2 years as of last week and now am being charged $15000 $8000 of which I have to pay up front to even find out how long the parts needed will be on back order. Could be a week could be a year. Not to mention that I have no car to drive and a car payment to make while I wait. This needs to be fixed as these cars are overheating out of nowhere and shutting down when it does. It’s a safety issue as well as a consumer issue.
Gauge cluster display screen failed and is blank. This screen provides critical vehicle information such as gas level, speed, vehicle error notifications, etc. It is unsafe to drive without being able to see this important vehicle information. This a common failure issue on these models.
Both left and right brake hoses failed internally causing caliper to lock closed. About 2 months ago I noticed upon application of brakes vehicle would pull hard to the right and the left front caliper/rotor brake system remained locked causing overheating to the point on smoking. This was remedied with replacement of hose, caliper and pads. Recently the jeep began pulling hard to the left upon braking, and the right caliper/rotor brake system were overheating due to the right brakes being stuck closed. Repair has not been completed as replacement parts from Chrysler are back ordered. I feel this is unsafe on multiple levels as it affects braking action including antilock brakes, causes premature wear on pads and rotors, and could create a situation where it affects wheel bearings and other nearby components.
When 4h on transfer case is on,the front tire wobble when turning even in a slow driving speed. Also suspension is very horrible when the vehicle is running on an uneven pavement driver and passenger were like being shaken inside left to right vise versa .
Wiring to the steering column melted causing concerns with air bag.Dealer wants us to purchase a new steering wheel
The digital instrument cluster (Electronic Vehicle Information Center – EVIC) on my 2020 Jeep Wrangler has failed, and no longer displays critical vehicle information. This includes fuel level, engine and oil temperature, mileage, tire pressure, and other key dashboard data. This failure creates an unsafe driving condition due to the inability to monitor vehicle speed, engine status, or fuel availability. I brought the vehicle to the dealer, and they confirmed the cluster is nonfunctional, but also stated that my VIN is not covered under the existing recall. After extensive research, I discovered hundreds of reports from other Wrangler owners experiencing the same failure in 2018–2021 models, yet Jeep has only issued limited recall coverage, seemingly based on build date rather than known defective components. To make matters worse, no replacement parts are available, either through the dealership or third-party suppliers. I am now left without a fully functioning vehicle and no support or resolution from Jeep or its dealers. This is a widespread and well-documented issue that affects driver safety and should be subject to expanded recall or mandated remedy. I urge NHTSA to investigate why so many similar failures are not covered under existing recalls.
The contact owned a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The contact stated that the battery and engine lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that while driving up a hill at 30 MPH, the vehicle became uncontrollable and went into oncoming traffic. The driver was depressing the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to stop and crashed into a Toyota Tacoma and a Toyota Corolla. The contact sustained an injury to her knee, and medical attention was provided. The airbags deployed. There were no reported fires. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a towing lot. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the A/C system failed to function as intended. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the instrument cluster had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V652000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.
My vehicle had a rough idling and then flashed an autostart symbol and stated on the dashboard that my autodash has been disabled. Later that day I drove my vehicle again, then the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree and every light was on and my car went limp. I pulled over on the side of the road and let my car stay off thinking it would help. Waited some time and tried to turn it on and it wouldnt turn back on until the 5th attempt. took my vehicle to jeep a few days later where they diagnosed it saying it needs a new ABS control module. However, the control module is on back order with no ETA in sight. There are multiple other people in my exact situation waiting 6+ months for their ABS control module. My car is undriveable as it has no traction control, will go limp, and no ABS system. I have been without my car for a month and they have not provided a loaner. To my research this has been an issue since september of 2023 and has yet to be a recall.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving at approximately 25 MPH, the instrument panel darkened and became inoperative. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the instrument panel had an internal short circuit and needed to be replaced. The contact researched and was made aware of an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
The instrument panel cluster in the 2020 Wrangler Sahara seems to have failed. As such, the driver cannot read the gas gauge, tire air pressure, and other vital metrics. There is a recall on this issue (30B), however my VIN is not included. I would kindly ask to see if my VIN should be included. The Wrangler has approximately 57,000 miles. This problem has been diagnosed by Capitol Garage in Willimantic, CT, Gary Bennett (Service Advisor). 860-786-4759 Jeep Customer Care Case # [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I have had 18 visits to 2 Jeep Dealerships for my 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. I have had my radio replaced 3 times and I'm still waiting (its been months!) for another new radio as the current is still going black, powering off, sometimes it responds & sometimes it doesn't. This is EXTREMELY frustrating for a "new" car not to have a functioning radio. But then recently my IC went totally black. No view of my gas gauge!! Of course, my VIN was NOT included in last year's recall but I was able to get this replaced thankfully via the extended warrantee I purchased. I had to pay a $500 deductible for it to be replaced. Same for the radio. At what point does Jeep or Mopar say....this is a serious electrical problem? Isn't anyone trained to get to root cause? I have pictures and videos of the power surging in my dashboard but sure lets keep replacing radios at the customers EXPENSE!
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH and decelerating while approaching a stop light, there was misfire coming from the engine, and the traction control activated, causing the brakes to become inoperable. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The “Service START/STOP System” message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined there were metal shavings in the oil. The dealer recommended an engine replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and confirmed there was no warranty or recall coverage on the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 124,000.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the instrument panel was black, and the contact was unable to see pertinent information about the vehicle's operation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the instrument panel had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The engine started to misfire due to bad components. The check engine light did not come on to indicate there was an issue until it was too late and the damage was done not only to the engine but other components as well. This was extremely dangerous as the issues resulted in loss of power while driving with my young children in the car as i had just picked them up from school. The vehicle has been inspected by a mechanic who believes that at this point the engine may need to be replaced entirely. My vehicle just passed 100,000 miles so is no longer covered by warranty and now I am stuck with over an $11,000 bill to replace my engine because it was built poorly to begin with, hence the class action lawsuit against Jeep for this particular motor.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V116000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
The cams are bad. I am now waiting almost 2 months for repairs. I keep calling and am being told that this is a common problem and they have 15 other Jeeps with the same issue and can't get the parts. This is my third time having my Jeep at the dealership for the same problem.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH, the instrument panel displayed a blank screen. No warning light was illuminated. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the diagnostic result was unknown. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V652000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.
Jeep, and they confirmed that my vehicle is unsafe to drive. Jeep’s only offered solution is a rental car, but they are requiring me to pay for it upfront and then seek reimbursement. I cannot afford to pay for a rental upfront, and Jeep has refused to cover the cost directly. This means I am being forced to drive a vehicle that Jeep has deemed unsafe because they will not provide a viable solution. I have called multiple times, and Jeep has continued to delay escalation while admitting my vehicle is a safety risk. I am filing this complaint because Jeep is failing to provide a timely or reasonable solution for a critical safety recall, leaving customers at risk. I need immediate assistance to hold Jeep accountable for failing to ensure my safety.
Digital dash went out for 6 months and my vehicle was not covered under the recall warranty..Had no fuel gauge or speedometer during that time...Paid $1143.73 to have it repaired...nowy odometer does not match my computer.
steering seems off like u having to turn wheel a good distance before the wheels actually turn , not safe whatsoever ! i did have something done to steering a while back but don’t remember what it was
I am experiencing a recurring issue with my vehicle’s gas cap. The check engine light continues to come on due to the gas cap, and this has happened multiple times. This is the third occurrence this year, and despite ensuring that the cap is properly secured, the issue persists. I am concerned that this may indicate a defect in the gas cap or an issue with the sealing mechanism. I would appreciate any assistance in determining whether this is part of a known recall or if there is a recommended fix.
Death Wobble on this vehicle. It shakes uncontrollably at higher speeds after hitting a bump in the road.
Component or System That Failed: The instrument cluster on my 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon failed on February 25, 2025. The dealership confirmed the part was defective and removed it from the vehicle. The failed component is not currently installed, but the dealership retained documentation of the diagnosis and can confirm the failure. Safety Risk: The failure of the instrument cluster renders the vehicle completely inoperable. Without this component, the driver cannot monitor critical safety information such as vehicle speed, warning indicators, or fuel level. Additionally, the extended parts backorder means the vehicle has been disabled for months, leaving me without safe transportation. If this type of failure were to occur while driving, it could result in a sudden loss of critical safety data and increase the risk of an accident. Problem Confirmation: Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the authorized Jeep dealership where the vehicle has remained since February 25, 2025. They diagnosed the instrument cluster as the root cause of the failure. Inspection by Manufacturer or Others: The vehicle was inspected and diagnosed by the Jeep dealership. Jeep/Stellantis Customer Care has also been notified and opened Case #93386471, but has not provided a resolution. No inspection by police, insurance, or other third parties has occurred. Warning Lamps, Messages, or Symptoms Prior to Failure: There were no warning lamps, error codes, or prior symptoms before the cluster failed. The failure was sudden, and the instrument cluster stopped functioning entirely on February 25, 2025.
Vehicle Information: 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Complaint: I am reporting a safety issue involving my 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon related to both the transmission and instrument cluster. In 2025, the transmission failed unexpectedly. The failure affected the vehicle’s ability to operate normally and created a potential safety hazard while driving. The issue required repair and appears consistent with other reported transmission problems in similar vehicles, even though my specific VIN was not included in any recall. In 2026, the instrument cluster failed, mileage at time of failure 108073. This caused loss or malfunction of critical driver information, including speed and warning indicators. This is a serious safety concern because it limits the driver’s ability to monitor vehicle operation and respond to potential hazards. These failures occurred within a year of each other and involve critical vehicle systems. I am aware that similar issues (transmission and instrument cluster failures) have been reported and/or recalled in other 2020 Jeep Wrangler vehicles, but my VIN has not been included. Given that the same components have failed in my vehicle, I believe this indicates a broader defect that may extend beyond the currently identified recall population. Safety Risk: Both failures pose safety risks: •Transmission failure can lead to loss of power or control while driving •Instrument cluster failure prevents the driver from seeing speed, warnings, and other critical information Request: I request that this issue be investigated and that the recall scope be reviewed and potentially expanded to include additional affected vehicles like mine.
Instrumental went blank and no longer is visible to the driver. There is no information pertaining to fuel level, mileage, vehicle engine temp, oil temp etc. Vehicle is not listed as having any recalls but recall 24V652000 (FMVSS101) details this exact issue. Vehicle going to a Jeep dealership for service next week.
The instrument panel cluster failed, losing access to gas level, warning indicators, vehicle safety feature notifications, and speedometer. The failed instrument panel cluster was confirmed by the local Jeep dealership's service department and they informed me of the recall from September/October 2024. The part has been backordered for more than one month due to recall repairs, but Jeep has stated that it is not covered under the recall.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle was started, and the instrument panel failed to function as intended. The contact stated that the instrument panel displayed a black screen. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed instrument panel. The contact was informed that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the parts were ordered. The contact stated that the vehicle remained with the dealer until the parts were received, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 33,800.
When I pressed breaks the engine started to surge instead of breaking. After releasing and repressing the breaks the issue was over. Happened twice in one day, 2/7/2025, the weather was clear and dry, road conditions good. Did not reproduce since then. Not sure how this is even possible.
Gauge cluster flashes and continues to spaz out impeding the use of the instrument controls such as speedometer and other equipment on the gauge cluster. This part is currently recalled on SOME jeeps. For some reason my 2020 wrangler was not included and it should be.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while stopped in traffic, she observed a revving sound coming from the engine compartment. The message that the engine was overheating was displayed, and the temperature gauge remained on H(Hot). The contact stated that when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the message disappeared. The vehicle was taken to the residence, where the contact observed that there was no coolant in the coolant reservoir. The contact added coolant to the coolant reservoir but became aware that the coolant reservoir was empty after one week. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that coolant was added to the reservoir. The contact believed that the failure was associated with Manufacturer Recall Number: 07-001-22REV-A. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The attachment for the rear defrost failed. The wiring for the rear defrost was poorly attached (bad glue?) to the back window. With the lack of trunk, jeeps end up with lots of moisture spraying onto the back window and freezing. This poor design causes a hazard by limiting visibility to solely the side mirrors.
Had gas leak on lower part of engine leaking gas from the high pressure fuel line took it to a dealer ro so the repairs Jan 29th 2025 and my jeep is still not right ..it had no mechanical problems at all except the leak and now they have had to replace the reservoir for coolant due to broken damaged line and the vehicle has no power at all since the dealership has had possession of my vehicle ...it is the 2.0 liter turbo
- (1) failed/black instrument cluster/panel. unable to see mileage, fuel level, engine temperature, tire pressure, etc. - I can hear multiple warning lights going off, but I'm unable to see any. - the vehicle has been brought in for servicing at my nearest jeep dealership - the vehicle is currently being inspected at my nearest jeep dealership - there were no warning messages or lamps prior to failure. the issue first appeared on 1/25/2025. the panel has not turned on since.
The instrument panel cluster failed in my vehicle. It is the only source of information for most systems. It is a major safety concern that this is not working. I saw there is a recall for Jeep vehicles in my model year range, but my vin is not included in the recall. can my VIN please be added? My vehicle is now inoperable because of this and has been so for over 3 weeks.
I have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler with 42,000 miles on it and the steering damper malfunctioned twice causing my vehicle to shake while on the interstate going about 70 mph. Very unsafe when you are in the middle of traffic going the same mph and have to slow down for the shaking / wobble to stop. I am scared that it will do it again. I’m paying a nice payment each month for my Jeep and I shouldn’t have to worry about a manufactures part malfunctioning on me while driving. I took it to the Jeep dealer and had it repaired right away. I feel like the repair costs should be reimbursed since this is a “known issue” for this model. There were no warning signs for this incident either. Very unsafe and should be taken care of from the manufacturer. Please issue a recall on this VIN to help other Jeep owners from experiencing this problem. Involuntary acceleration. I was coming to a stop at a major intersection, I was almost completely stopped when my Jeep began to rapidly accelerate. I pushed on the brakes as hard as I could but was unable to stop and ended up in a field on the opposite side of the road
About 70-75 mph the entire vehicle shakes briefly, and steering wheel will wobble, the steering wheel will wobble uncontrollable on bumps at HWY speed. There doesn't appear to be any worn or damaged parts.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the heated steering wheel was no longer functioning as needed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that a wire located directly behind that air bag control module within the steering wheel had frayed and melted the internal components. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 52,000.
While driving the drivers side sun visor just fell down from the pivot point blocking my vision while in heavy traffic. The Passenger side had done the same thing a few months prior. From looking at the Jeep forums, You tube and Amazon and Ebay it is a common problem on the Jeep Wrangler JL product line. I had to purchase a clip or aftermarket bracket to hold the close to 200 dollar sun visor from falling out. These brackets are rather cheap and inexpensive. This is so common and is a Huge Safety risk. The problem is that the pivot part that mounts the visor into the roof clamp or holding piece is of cheap thin plastic that breaks easily. The other small part that holds it in fails often as well. It is so common that the amount of Vendors on Amazon and Ebay that offer a cheap part to hold it up is huge. Having something that falls into your vision is totally unacceptable and needs to be addressed ASAP/ Thank you for your help!
1. Transmission lags about 2 to 3 secs when trying to accelerate from a stop, or almost complete stop. This happens often. 2. Both sun visors just fall down when driving down the road. Design is poor. They are only attached by an internal cable. This happens often.
Wandering steering at highway speeds, unable to maintain safe control of the vehicle
Digital display that shows speed and fuel level stops working and goes black while driving. Happened in 2024 and the display was replaced at my cost. New display experienced the same blackout in January 2025. Manufacturer is unable to deliver a new replacement display to their dealership to fix the vehicle. It has been almost 5 months without any resolution in sight. Other owners who have used my carwash have mentioned similar experience
