MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING ON I-85 NORTH OUTSIDE OF DURHAM, NC. THERE WERE NO CARS AROUND OR IN FRONT OF US FOR AT LEAST 1/4 MILE. THERE WAS A LOUD BANG AND THEN WIND NOISE. THE SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED FOR NO REASON. *TR
WHILE DRIVING OUR SUNROOF EXPLODED. THERE WAS NO OBJECT THAT HIT IT. IT JUST SPONTANEOUSLY SHATTERED. THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME BUT THE SUNROOF SLIDING SHADE WAS OPEN...UPDATED 08-26-14 *BF UPDATED 8/29/2014 *JS
MY 2012 KIA SORENTO WAS RUNNING FINE, NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I HEARD A FLUTTER NOISE THAT TURNED INTO A KNOCKING SOUND. HAD THE CAR TOWED TO DEALER. TOW TRUCK DRIVER STARTED THE CAR AND DROVE IT APPROXIMATELY 60 FT TO A PARKING SPOT. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER I HAD CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE AND THAT THE ENGINE WAS SEIZED TIGHT (WHICH WAS NOT TRUE AT ALL) DUE TO NEGLECT. I HAVE PROVIDED KIA CORP. AND THE DEALER WITH ALL OF THE SERVICE RECORDS AS WELL AS THE OIL PURCHASE RECEIPTS, OIL FILTER RECEIPTS AND OIL CHANGE RECORDS. OIL CHANGES WERE PERFORMED TO WHAT KIA'S MANUAL SUGGESTS. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS KIA OWNERS WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE I HAD. THEIR COMPLAINTS ARE ALMOST EXACTLY WORD FOR WORD WHAT HAPPENED TO MY KIA. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS...MOST KIA OWNERS HAD THIS CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY OR WHEN THEIR TEENAGERS WERE DRIVING. KIA HAS A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST THEM FOR THIS VERY REASON. PLEASE DO SOMETHING BEFORE SOMEONE REALLY GETS HURT. I WAS VERY LUCKY THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF TRAFFIC AND WAS ABLE TO GET OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. IF THERE WERE TRAFFIC AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET OFF OF THE HIGHWAY.. IT COULD GAVE RESULTED IN MUCH WORSE. PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. I HAVE CAME ACROSS SO MANY PEOPLE IN STORES, RESTAURANTS, AND DEALERS WHILE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER CAR TO BE ABLE TO GET MY CHILD TO AND FROM SCHOOL, FOOTBALL, ETC. I STILL HAVE A LOAN ON MY KIA AND NOW HAVE ANOTHER LOAN BECAUSE THIS ISSUE. KIA HAS BASED MY WARRANTY REPAIR ON PICTURES THE DEALER TOOK. THEY ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ME NOR HELP ME. I BEGGED AND PLEADED WITH THEM TO LOOK FURTHER INTO IT AND THEY WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THEN I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO AND I NEEDED TO GET MY CAR OFF OF THEIR LOT.
MY CAR SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY (DOING ABOUT 70MPH) BACK IN THE SUMMER OF 2013. LUCKILY, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC SO I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY TO RESTART MY CAR (PUSH BUTTON START). THEY SAID IT WAS THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. ON AUGUST 7, 2014 (44,516K), 8 OIL CHANGES USING SYNTHETIC OIL AND KIA OIL FILTERS (2 GENERIC), MY ENGINE WAS MAKING A FLUTTERING NOISE AND THEN A KNOCKING NOISE.END RESULT, THEY SAID I NEGLECTED MY CAR AND NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. KIA MOTORS OUTRIGHT REFUSED TO FIX MY CAR UNDER THE WARRANTY. EVEN WHEN PROOF OF OIL CHANGES WAS DONE. I HAD NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. NO SMOKE OF ANY KIND COMING FROM THE TAILPIPE, NOT SLUGGISH, NO WARNING LIGHTS, NOTHING. KIA MOTORS NEVER FIXED MY CAR. IT SAT DEAD IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR OVER 15 MONTHS. I FINALLY WROTE A LETTER TO THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP BACK ON JUNE 3, 2015 AND SHE CONTACTED ME IN OCTOBER AND SAID THAT, "IF ANYONE HAS PULL WITH KIA, IT'S ME, I OWN THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY WON'T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT YOUR CAR." SHE ENDED UP REPLACING MY ENGINE WITH A USED ONE, GOT IT ALL READY FOR INSPECTION AND PUT NEWER TIRES ON IT SO THAT IT WOULD PASS INSPECTION AND OFFERED TO PAY FOR HALF THE COST ($4200, I PAID $2100). THIS IS A VERY BIG PROBLEM. I AM HEARING OF MORE AND MORE PEOPLE HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE I DID. EVEN ONE PERSON WHO STATED ALL OF THEIR VEHICLES MAINTENANCE WAS DONE THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP AND KIA MOTORS STILL REFUSED TO FIX THEIR CAR UNDER THE WARRANTY. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. LET'S NOT WAIT UNTIL GOD FORBID SOMEONE GETS KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE.
I USED MOBILE ONE 5W30, I USED KIA OIL FILTERS (2 GENERIC), I HAD 44,516K MILES ON IT ON AUGUST 7, 2014. I DID 8 OIL CHANGES. MY CAR WAS RUNNING PERFECTLY FINE. NO WHITE OR BLACK SMOKE, NO DASHBOARD LIGHTS, NOT SLUGGISH, NOTHING AND THE ENGINE SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY DOING ABOUT 65 WHEN I HEARD A FLUTTERING NOISE THAT VERY QUICKLY TURNED INTO A KNOCKING NOISE. I COULD BARELY PULL OVER WITHOUT ALMOST GETTING HIT TWICE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID I NEVER DID ANY OIL CHANGES AND THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 20K MILES WORTH OF SLUDGE IN MY ENGINE. MY OIL WAS CHANGED AROUND MARCH 7, 2014. KIA MOTORS DOWN RIGHT REFUSED TO EVEN LOL AT IT. I HIRED AND ATTORNEY WHO WROTE A DEMAND LETTER AND 4 MONTHS LATER THEY DOWN RIGHT REFUSED TO FIX IT UNDER THE WARRANTY. MY CAR SAT IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR OVER 15 MONTHS. I REPORTED THIS TO NHTSA BACK IN LATE 2012 EARLY 2013. I WORE A LETTER TO THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP AND SHE PUT A USED ENGINE IN IT AND PAID FOR HALF. NEEDLESS TO SAY I'M HAPPY I HAVE MY CAR BACK BUT I DON'T TRUST IT. I HAVE THE TOP OF THE LINE SX AWD AND I ALSO ADDED THE AMBIENT LIGHTING AND TINTED THE FRONT WINDOWS. I LOVE MY CAR BUT FEEL I SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FOR THE SHEAR HELL AND HUGE FINANCIAL BURDEN IT HAS CAUSED MY FAMILY. I'VE HAD IT BACK SINCE NOVEMBER 12, 2016 AND THE FINANCIAL BURDEN IS STILL HAUNTING MY FAMILY.
DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT A SPEED OF 60 MPH. SUNROOF EXPLODED, OR SHATTERED, I SHOULD SAY. NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. NOTHING ABOVE ME. IN OTHER WORDS, I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THE SUNROOF WAS HIT BY ANY DEBRIS OR OBJECT. SIMPLY, OUT OF THE BLUE, SHATTERED.. UPDATED 08-20-14 *BF
MY 10-YEAR OLD SON, WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE, WAS PLAYING IN OUR 2012 KIA SORENTO ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. IT'S THE PUSHBUTTON START TYPE AND HE DIDN'T HAVE THE KEY FOB. THAT WAS IN THE HOUSE. REGARDLESS, WITHOUT THE CAR STARTED AND WITHOUT HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE, HE WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE OUT OF PARK AND INTO NEUTRAL. BECAUSE THE SORENTO WAS PARKED ON AN INCLINE, IT BEGAN TO COAST BACKWARD DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. OUR SON TRIED TO PUT THE SUV BACK INTO PARK. BECAUSE IT WAS MOVING, HE WAS UNABLE TO DO THIS. SO, IN A PANIC, HE JUMPED OUT OF THE TRUCK AND TRIED TO STOP IT BY GETTING BEHIND IT AND TRYING TO SLOW IT DOWN. HE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AND ENDED UP BEING CRUSHED BETWEEN THE SORENTO AND A TREE IN THE YARD. THIS RESULTED IN A HUGE LACERATION IN HIS KNEE, SERIOUS BRUISING TO HIS LUNGS, 4 CRACKED RIBS AND A CRACKED PELVIS. HE SPENT NEARLY 3 WEEKS IN THE HOSPITAL INCLUDING 10 DAYS IN THE PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AT CHILDREN?S HOSPITAL. AFTER THE INCIDENT, I TRIED TO RECREATE WHAT HAPPENED. I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT IN AND OUT OF PARK WITHOUT MUCH FORCE AT ALL. THIS IS WITHOUT A KEY FOB IN THE CAR, WITHOUT THE CAR BEING ON, WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AND WITH THE DRIVER?S SIDE DOOR OPEN. OUR SON WAS VERY SERIOUSLY INJURED, BUT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 KIA SORENTO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY SHIFTED INTO PARK. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT EXCESSIVE FORCE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO SHIFT INTO PARK ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. ADDITIONALLY, WHILE EXITING, THE VEHICLE ATTEMPTED TO ROLL AWAY AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,000.
FOR SEVERAL WEEKS A NOTICEABLE CLUNK IN REAR AXLE. OBVIOUS AT INITIAL START AND UPON DECELERATION FROM SPEEDS ABOVE 30. WHEN DECELERATING RIGHT AT 30MPH A CLICK AND CLUNK OCCUR. TOOK IT IN TO DEALERSHIP IN BRADENTON, FLORIDA, SUNSET KIA. THEY KEPT VEHICLE OVERNIGHT. I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM WAS NOT NORMAL AND HAD ONLY RECENTLY BEGUN BUT WAS CONCERNED SINCE A MECHANIC FRIEND THOUGHT IT INVOLVED REAR AXLE. I INFORMED THE KIA SERVICE REP THAT A LONG TRIP THROUGH DANGEROUS WESTERN US MOUNTAINS WAS TO BEGIN SOON AND IT MUST BE SAFE. THAT DAY THEY CALLED AND SAID THEY DID TEST DRIVE COMPARING IT WITH ANOTHER CAR TEST DRIVEN AND BOTH DID SAME THING. THEY CONCLUDED THE CAR WAS "OPERATING AS DESIGNED." THE NEXT DAY WHEN I PICKED IT UP AND STRESSED THIS WAS NOT "AS DESIGNED" BECAUSE IT JUST BEGAN TO ACT UP I WAS TOLD THAT THE TECH FOUND "SUBTLE MOVEMENT OF EITHER TRANS MOUNTS OR DRIVE AXLES." THIS WAS ALSO NOTED ON MY RECEIPT FROM KIA. MY GOD THEY ADMITTED THE PROBLEM THEN WOULD NOT REPAIR IT! WHEN PRESSED AS TO THE SAFETY OF THIS CONDITION I WAS INFORMED BY DUSTIN HOFFMAN "WELL THE AXLE COULD FREEZE UP BUT JUST PULL OVER." I PRESSED "HOW CAN YOU DO THAT SAFELY ON A HIGHWAY DOING 70?" UNBELIEVABLE!!! WHEN PRESSED ABOUT HOW THEY COULD LET ME, GIVEN MY STATED PLANS, LEAVE IN A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN THE REPLY WAS SIMPLY "THE TECH FOUND IT TO BE OPERATING AS DESIGNED." I NOTED MY OBJECTIONS ON THEIR BILL AND MY COPY. I ALSO NOTED THE TECH ONLY DROVE THE VEHICLE .02 TENTHS OF A MILE ACCORDING TO THE TRIP ODO. THE ONLY THING THEY FINALLY SAID WAS "THE TECH STARTED A SERVICE LINE." WHATEVER THAT IS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY CAR IN A PARKING GARAGE AND WITHOUT WARNING AS I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN THE CAR SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY, NO LIGHTS, NO ENGINE, NO POWER STEERING, STIFF BRAKES. I WAS UNABLE TO EVEN TURN ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS. SOMEONE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO HELP PUSH MY VEHICLE TO THE SIDE AND EVENTUALLY I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY FOUND NOTHING AND WERE UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM. THIS COULD BE A REAL DANGER ON THE ROAD AND NOW MY TRUST IN THE CAR IS SHAKEN! SCARY TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE REPORTING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS IN TRAFFIC AND THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING. I NOTICED THAT ENGINE STOPPED WITH ALL THE INDICATORS ON INCLUDING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON BUT MY CAR WAS NOT RUNNING ANYMORE AND WILL NOT DRIVE EVEN WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL. I PUT IT ON PARK AND TURNED IT OFF AND RESTARTED. IT STARTED. THIS HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF EACH OTHER. *TR
FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A 2 MONTH SPAN, MY 2012 KIA SORENTO HAS COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AS WE HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT. WE ARE AT THE 60K MILES MARK. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. TWO OF THE THREE TIMES WE HAVE BEEN DOING AROUND 40 MPH ON VERY BUSY STREETS AND THANK GOD, WE DID NOT HIT ANOTHER CAR OR GET HIT. THE VEHICLE WITH ZERO WARNING, WILL JUST DIE AND WE WILL LOSE ALL POWER STEERING, WE CAN'T SHIFT GEARS, AND THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK LIKE THEY NORMALLY DO. THE FIRST TIME I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A BATTERY, SO I REPLACED IT. BUT SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD IT AT THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. THEY WILL GET IT RUNNING AGAIN AND THEN A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER, IT WILL DIE AGAIN. I HAVE TWO BABIES THAT RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE AND I AM LOOKING AT MY OPTIONS TO GETTING RID OF IT. WIFE DRIVING FROM NY TO CONN, VEHICLE LOSING POWER, EXTREME SHAKING, GRINDING/RATTLE NOISE, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, STAYED ON, THEN BLINKING ON AND OFF, VEHICLE REALLY RUNNING BAD AT THIS TIME. FOLLOWING DAY, ENGINE LIGHT STILL ON, NEED TO PUMP GAS PEDDLE TO GET STARTED. IDLE VERY ROUGH. 2012 KIA SORENTO WITH 38;000 MILES. VERY CONCERNED THAT VEHICLE WILL SHUT OFF COMPLETELY, AS IS COMMON PER NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS, AT SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. WILL BRING TO DEALERSHIP TOMORROW, HOWEVER, HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING KIA SORENTO ENGINE PROBLEMS THIS AFTERNOON AND IT DOES NOT LOOK GOOD. 1) DEALERSHIP TECHS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEMS. (COMMON) 2) RECALL TO REPLACE ECM BUT CUSTOMERS NOT NOTIFIED AS DEEMED NOT A SAFETY ISSUE BY KIA. REALLY???? 3) THROTTLE ACTUATOR FAILURE PART OF PROBLEM BUT NOT WIDELY KNOWN BY CONSUMERS.(COMMON) IMPORTANT FOR 2012-TO 2014 OWNERS. NEW YORK HAS LEMON LAWS. IF YOUR VEHICLE IS LESS THAN 2 YEARS OLD OR HAS LESS THAN 18,000 MILES AND YOU HAVE HAD TO TAKE IT BACK FOR REPAIRS SEVERAL TIMES, THERE ARE ATTORNEYS WHO LIVE FOR THIS TYPE OF THING. I AM IN THIS GROUP AND SENT E-MAIL TODAY TO JUST THOSE TYPE OF SHARKS. BE PRO-ACTIVE, NOT RE-ACTIVE. I HAVE ONLY RECENTLY SEEN ARTICLES REGARDING THE HYUNDAI/KIA ENGINES CATCHING FIRE. I HAD A 2012 KIA SORENTO THAT THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE IN 2014 HENCE TOTALLING THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TRIED FOR YEARS TO DISCUSS THIS WITH PEOPLE BUT SINCE IT WASNT AN ACTIVE RECALL NO ONE WOULD PURSUE THE CASE. ON MAY 22, 2014, MY DETAILER WENT TO TURN THE CAR ON AND TO MOVE IT AND THE WHOLE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. OBVIOUSLY I DO NOT STILL OWN THIS VEHICLE BUT I WOULD LIKE SOME ANSWERS.
KIA RECALL. ON MAY 22, 2014, MY 2012 KIA SORENTO CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS TOTALED. THERE WAS NO EXPLANATION AT THIS TIME, BUT NOW IT IS COMING TO SURFACE THAT THESE VEHICLES ARE SPONTANEOUSLY CATCHING FIRE.
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE HAS EITHER STALLED WITH A TOTAL LOSS OF STEERING, BRAKES AND ACCELERATION OR WITH THE ENGINE STILL RUNNING A TOTAL LOSS OF STEERING, BRAKES AND ACCELERATION. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THERE WAS A SOUND LIKE A GUNSHOT. WHEN I LOOKED BACK, I NOTICED THAT THE REAR SUNROOF HAD SHATTERED COMPLETELY. THERE WAS A BULGE IN THE GLASS GOING UPWARD LIKE THE GLASS EXPLODED, NOT IMPLODED AS IT WOULD IF SOMETHING STRUCK IT. *TR
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A KIA SORENTO WITH 38K MILES. WHEN I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE I NOTICED A DISTINCT PULL IN THE STEERING AND THE VEHICLE WOULD DRIFT IN EITHER DIRECTION. SINCE THE VEHICLE STILL HAS 20K LEFT ON THE KIA WARRANTY I WENT AHEAD WITH THE PURCHASE. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE KIA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM TO WHICH THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE TIRES WERE UNEVENLY WORN AND THAT THEY SHOULD BE REPLACED. I REPLACED THE TIRES AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN WHERE THEY PERFORMED A TSB TO ADDRESS THE DRIFT/PULL ISSUE AND PERFORMED AN ALIGNMENT. THE PROBLEM WAS STILL NOT RESOLVED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY NOTICED THE VEHICLE PULLING AND RECOMMENDED THAT I GET ANOTHER ALIGNMENT. I STATED THAT I HAD JUST HAD AN ALIGNMENT DONE. SINCE IT WAS MY THIRD TIME TAKING IT IN I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH A KIA CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE. SHE HAS BEEN EXTREMELY DISMISSIVE ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND HAS NOT AGREED TO SEND OUT A TECH TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. I HAD TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND PRESS THE START BUTTON AGAIN. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME ON THE FREEWAY IT HAS DONE IT, IN ADDITIONAL TO THE 4-7 TIMES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. ALL WHILE GOING ABOUT 35MPH AND UNDER. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP REPETITIVELY AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL IN LOCATING THE PROBLEM. THE 2ND TIME I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY REPLACED THE FULL THROTTLE BODY, BUT EXACTLY ONE WEEK OF HAVING IT BACK IN MY POSSESSION THE VEHICLE LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE, SEVERAL TIMES, BUT FROM THE LOOK OF THIS WEBSITE, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THAT PROBLEM. *TR

LOSS OF CONTROL THEN OCCURRED OF THE STEERING WHEEL (TO STIFF TO TURN) ALONG WITH A DIFFICULT BREAKING PROCESS CAUSING THE CAR TO VEER OFF THE ROADWAY. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A STOP BY PLACING AN EXTREME AND INCREASED FORCE ONTO THE BREAK PEDAL BEFORE A BRICK PILLAR WAS STRUCK HEAD ON. *TT

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM AN E-MAIL SENT TO BIG O TIRE CUSTOMER SERVICE (TBC CORP) ON JUNE 26/2014 WE OWN A SET OF 4 DEFECTIVE COOPER 107H DISCOVERER LSX PLUS TIRES PURCHASED FOR OUR 2012 KIA SORENTO EX SUV ON NOV. 29, 2013 FROM BIG O TIRES STORE #6171 IN CONIFER, CO. THEY BALANCED AND MOUNTED THE TIRES. THEY DID NOT HAVE TIME TO PERFORM AN ALIGNMENT, SO FIRESTONE IN EVERGREEN, CO (11/29/14) ALIGNED THE VEHICLE. IN LATE APRIL, 2014 WE NOTICED A LOUD RUMBLING ROAD NOISE. WE HAD ANOTHER ALIGNMENT PERFORMED AND ALSO TOOK THE VEHICLE TO PEAK KIA IN LITTLETON, CO WHO DETERMINED THAT ALL ALIGNMENTS WERE WITHIN KIA SPECS, FOUND NO NOISE WITH THE VEHICLE ON THE RACK AND ADVISED US THAT THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO BIG O TIRES IN CONIFER. THEY ADVISED US TO HAVE THE CAMBER ADJUSTED MORE AND IF IT COULDN'T, TO INSTALL A NON-KIA AFTER MARKET PART WHICH WOULD ALLOW THE FURTHER CAMBER ADJUSTMENT. WE HAD THE ALIGNMENT ADJUSTED AGAIN. THE NOISE GOT LOUDER. KIA REINSPECTED THE TIRES, TOOK IT FOR ANOTHER ROAD TEST AND REVIEWED THE ALIGNMENT RECORDS AND AGAIN THE KIA SERVICE MANAGER CONCLUDED THAT THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO BIG O TIRES IN CONIFER TO SEEK RESOLUTION. THE MANAGER STATED THAT OUR SHOCKS AND STRUTS WERE BAD AND HIS LEAD MECHANIC STATED THAT WE NEEDED THIS AFTER MARKET PART TO ALLOW THE CAMBER TO BE FURTHER ADJUSTED. AT THAT POINT WE ASKED TO SPEAK WITH A REGIONAL OR DISTRICT MANAGER WHO COULD ASSIST US. WE WERE REFERRED TO COOPER TIRE. COOPER TIRE, TOLD US THAT THESE ARE PRIVATE LABEL TIRES MANUFACTURED BY COOPER FOR TBC AND TO SPEAK WITH TBC AS THEY HANDLE ALL WARRANTY CLAIMS. INCIDENT #1: I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE EAST BOUND ON A ST IN THE DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO AREA, APPROACHING FRONT STREET (EXACT STREET INTERSECTION UNKNOWN). IT RESTARTED WITHOUT ANY COMPLICATION AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. INCIDENT #2: ON 05/13/2014, AFTER APPROXIMATELY 6 WEEKS OR 550 MILES OF USE (MY PERSONAL ESTIMATE), THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME, I WAS DRIVING WEST BOUND ON CEDAR STREET IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO, AT APPROXIMATELY 15-20 MPH (DECREASING SPEED TO STOP AT A LIGHT) WHEN AT THE CORNER OF 5TH STREET AND CEDAR ST., THE CAR SHUT OFF COMPLETELY AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING OR ANY PRIOR INDICATION OF IMMINENT FAILURE. I WAS ABLE TO VEER THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE A BIT BECAUSE OF THE MOMENTUM AND ANGLE OF THE STREET BUT COULD NOT MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL MUCH. I PLACED THE CAR IN PARK, TURNED ON MY WARNING SIGNALS, AND TURNED OF THE IGNITION. THEY TOLD ME THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND WERE NOT ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM AND THAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE CONCERN. THEIR ONLY RECOMMENDATION WAS TO TAKE THE CAR IN IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. *TR
MY 2012 KIA SORENTO COMPLETELY STALLED IN A PARKING LOT. AT 5:40PM MST ON 03/20/2014, I WAS APPROACHING A 4-WAY INTERSECTION IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH INTENDING TO STOP AND THEN MAKE A RIGHT TURN. TRAFFIC GOING MY DIRECTION HAD STOP SIGNS AND CROSS TRAFFIC DID NOT. THERE WAS ONE OTHER CAR APPROACHING THE INTERSECTION FROM MY LEFT. WITHOUT WARNING, MY 2012 KIA SORENTO COMPLETELY SHUT OFF (ENGINE, ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC).IT HAPPENED SILENTLY AND WITHOUT DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS OR ENGINE NOISE. I WAS NOT ABLE TO FULLY STOP OR TURN AT THE INTERSECTION AS MY CAR HAD LOST POWER BRAKES, POWER STEERING AND ANY ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A REST, IT WAS AT A DIAGONAL, PARTIALLY BLOCKING THE INTERSECTION AND FACING THE WRONG WAY TOWARD ANY ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO MY RIGHT (THERE WAS NONE AT THE TIME). THE CAR DID NOT SHOW ANY SIGNS OF A PROBLEM IN THE TIME IMMEDIATELY BEFORE OR AFTER THIS INCIDENT. WE DROPPED OFF THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT MORNING 3/21/2014. AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, THE DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM, NOR HAVE THEY FOUND ANY CODES ON THE CAR'S COMPUTER. THIS IS POTENTIALLY AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM.
ON MARCH 14, 2014 WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH ON A HIGHWAY I HEARD A NOISE IN MY ENGINE. I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MANEUVER OFF THE HIGHWAY SO I COULD HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL KIA DEALERSHIP. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A THREE LANE HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR WHEN MY ENGINE SHOT ONE OF THE ENGINE RODS THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF MY ENGINE BLOCK. THIS CAUSED A LARGER THAN A SILVER DOLLAR SIZED HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE BLOCK AND SEPARATED THE ENGINE FROM WHERE IT IS SECURED TO THE VEHICLE. KIA AND THE DEALERSHIP HAVE YET TO BE ABLE TO FIX MY VEHICLE WHICH IS COMPLETELY COVERED UNDER THE MANUFACTURES WARRANTY AS I HAVE HAD ALL OF MY ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE PERFORMED AT A LOCAL KIA DEALERSHIP. THEY REPLACED A REMANUFACTURED SHORT BLOCK ASSEMBLY IN MY VEHICLE ON 3/28/14 I WAS TOLD TO PICK UP MY VEHICLE LATER THAT AFTERNOON. I RECEIVED A CALL BACK THAT THE MECHANIC WAS ON THE PHONE WITH ONE OF KIA'S ENGINEERS BECAUSE OF A NOISE COMING FROM MY ENGINE. THEY ARE NOW RE-REPLACING A REMANUFACTURED SHORT BLOCK ASSEMBLY IN MY VEHICLE WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ME BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE ISSUES KIA IS HAVING WITH THEIR ENGINES. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS. WE WERE LUCKY THAT THIS HAPPENED ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS WITH NO TRAFFIC. I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR BACK BY PUTTING IT IN PARKING BRAKE AND PRESSING THE START BUTTON AGAIN. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER POSTS WITH THE SIMILAR PROBLEM. ON 12-25-2013, NOTICED THAT THE SIDE MARKET LIGHTS REMAINED ON FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF. COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, CAR WOULDN'T START AFTER PUSHING ON THE KEY-LESS ENTRY PUSH BUTTON START. CAR FINALLY STARTED AFTER SEVERAL PUSH BUTTON ATTEMPTS. NEXT DAY THE CAR WOULDN'T STOP AFTER PUSHING ON THE KEY-LESS ENTRY STOP BUTTON. ENGINE FINALLY TURNED OFF AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS BY PLAYING WITH THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB AND DRIVING AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. "UNABLE TO STOP THE ENGINE BY PUSHING ON THE KEY-LESS ENTRY PUSH BUTTON STOP" PROBLEM CONTINUED, SO IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY AND FOR NO REASON MY CAR JUST STALLED I MANAGED TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER PUT IT IN PARK AND RESTART IT . *TR
THIS PAST FRIDAY AT ABOUT 2 PM I WAS DRIVING MY 2012 KIA SORENTO DOWN HIGHWAY 50 WHEN SUDDENLY AND FOR NO APPARENT REASON MY SUNROOF VIOLENTLY EXPLODED. I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE I WASN'T SURE AT THAT MOMENT WHAT HAD ACTUALLY HAPPENED. WHEN I CLIMBED UP TO LOOK I FOUND THAT THE FRONT PORTION OF MY PANORAMIC SUNROOF WAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED. I LOOKED THROUGH THE GLASS BUT FOUND NO ROCK OR ANY OTHER KIND OF OBJECT THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. FORTUNATELY THE SUNROOF SHADE WAS CLOSED OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED IN GLASS. I CALLED THE KIA SERVICE DEPT. WHERE I HAD BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE MGR. I EXPLAINED TO HIM WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND HE TOLD ME A ROCK MUST HAVE FLOWN UP AND HIT IT. NOW I FIND THAT HIGHLY UNLIKELY. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY, 57 DEGREES AND VISIBILITY WAS GREAT. I WAS ON AN OPEN STRETCH OF ROAD DOING ABOUT 50 MILES PER HOUR. THERE WASN'T ANY BUILDINGS ON EITHER SIDE OF ROAD AND ONLY A FEW CARS SCATTERED IN FRONT AND BEHIND ME. I?M PRETTY FOCUSED WHEN I DRIVE SO I THINK IF SOMETHING WOULD HAVE FLOWN UP IN FRONT OF ME THAT COULD HAVE COME DOWN AND SMASHED MY SUNROOF IN I?M ALMOST CERTAIN I WOULD HAVE SEEN IT. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THIS HAS TO BE SOME KIND OF MANUFACTURER DEFECT. I THEN ASKED HIM IF THIS WAS COVERED UNDER MY BASIC 5 YEAR/ 60,000 MILE WARRANTY AND HE SAID IT WAS NOT. SO NOW I?M STUCK PAYING A $500 DEDUCTIBLE FOR MY INSURANCE TO COVER THE DAMAGE. YOUR AGENCY REALLY NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS BECAUSE THIS ISN'T FAIR TO CONSUMERS LIKE MYSELF WHO HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR SOMETHING THAT TO ME AT LEAST SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, THERE WAS A LOT OF TRAFFIC SO WE WEREN'T DRIVING VERY FAST, AND THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF, THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. IN ADDITION, THE TEXTURE OF THE FRONT ROTOR WAS SMOOTH AND SHINY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
ON OCTOBER 14,2013 AS I WAS TRAVELING IN STOP AND START TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND SURGED FORWARD AT LEAST 5 FEET WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE ALMOST HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IT TOOK MUCH EFFORT TO AVOID CRASHING. THIS OCCURRED AGAIN ON MARCH 16,2014 WHILE IN A PARKING LOT LOOKING FOR A PARKING SPOT. AGAIN WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THE CAR ACCELERATED AND LUNGED FORWARD 8 TO 10 FEET. *TR
THE FIRST TIME I WAS DRIVING AT 35-45 MPH AND SLOWED TO TURN AND MY ENGINE SPONTANEOUSLY STALLED AND STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS AROUND ME SO I BRAKED, AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND CAR SEEMED TO REBOOT FINE. TODAY, IT HAPPENED AGAIN EXCEPT I WAS DRIVING AT A MUCH SLOWER SPEED, 15 MPH. I WAS READY TO TAKE A TURN AND THE WHEEL LOCKED UP IN THE TURNED POSITION (BUT NOT FULLY TURNED) AND THE ENGINE STALLED. I BRAKED THE CAR AGAIN AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. THIS IS COMPLETELY DANGEROUS FOR ALL PASSENGERS OF THE CAR AND EVERYONE WHO'S DRIVING AROUND ME! *TR
PROBLEM: 7 YEAR OLD WAS ABLE TO PULL CONSOLE SHIFT LEVER ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITHOUT KEYLESS IGNITION OUT OF PARK AND INTO NEUTRAL AND/OR REVERSE (WE DIDN'T TRY PULLING FURTHER DOWN THE SHIFT COLUMN) WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION/VEHICLE TURNED ON. THE VEHICLE ROLLED OUT OF OUR SLIGHTLY INCLINED DRIVEWAY, ACROSS THE STREET AND STOPPED RESTING AGAINST THE CURB ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD (DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS TO STOP THE HEAVY VEHICLE AND LATER TO FIND OUT THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WAS ABOUT HALF WAY DEPRESSED, BY MY 7 YEAR OLD SINCE THAT WAS AS FAR AS SHE COULD PUSH IT). THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AFTER RETURNING FROM GROCERY SHOPPING AND THE TAILGATE WAS OPEN ALL THE WAY WITH MY 5 YEAR OLD IN THE REAR CARGO AREA "HELPING" US WITH THE GROCERIES. LUCKILY NO BODY WAS INJURED AND NEIGHBORS HELPED STOP TRAFFIC AS I FRANTICALLY TRIED TO GET MY VEHICLE TO STOP AND MY CHILDREN TO SAFETY. I UNDERSTAND THAT I SHOULD HAVE ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKE AND CHILDREN SHOULD NOT PLAY IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT OF A VEHICLE, BUT THIS INCIDENT HAS BEEN REPORTED BY OTHERS (AFTER SEARCHING THIS WEBSITE) AND NO MATTER WHAT AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION VEHICLE SHOULD NOT DISENGAGE FROM PARK, NO MATTER HOW HARD ONE PULLS ON THE SHIFT LEVER WITHOUT THE VEHICLE TURNED ON; A SAFETY MEASURE SINCE AT LEAST 1994 WHEN I FIRST STARTED DRIVING. I SHOULD ALSO NOTE, THAT WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION THERE IS A CLICKING NOISE THAT COMES FROM THE AREA OF THE SHIFTER ON THE CONSOLE, WHICH WAS REPAIRED ABOUT A YEAR AGO UNDER WARRANTY. I INQUIRED AT THAT TIME EXACTLY WHAT THE ISSUE WAS, BUT DID NOT RECEIVE AN ANSWER FROM THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE CENTER, ONLY I NOTICED THAT THE ISSUE WAS NO LONGER THERE. NOW THE ISSUE HAD REAPPEARED BEFORE THIS INCIDENT AND I HAVE NOT HAD THE TIME TO HAVE IT FIXED AGAIN, BUT WAS ASSURED THE BROKEN PART DID NOT AFFECT SAFETY, MAYBE.
FOLLOW-UP: NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10544920 AFTER A SINGLE CONVERSATION WITH KIA CONSUMER AFFAIRS, I WAS TOLD TO IMMEDIATELY CONTACT A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC. I CHOSE A NEW "CLOSER" DEALERSHIP THAT WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. STATED I HAD A KIA CASE #, I ARRIVED AND IN A LITTLE OVER AN HOUR, MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, THAT IS GREAT JOB ON THE TECHNICIANS PART, BUT THERE WAS NO DISCUSSION ABOUT WHETHER THIS IS A CHRONIC ISSUE OR NOT AND NO DISCUSSION OTHER THAN, THE "PIN WHICH HOLDS THE VEHICLE IN PARK WAS BROKEN". SOME BACKGROUND: I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE JULY OF 2011, HAD THE FIRST SHIFTER ASSEMBLY REPLACED DUE TO "BROKEN PART" IN MARCH OF 2012, NOW IN SEPT OF 2013, I HAD THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY REPLACED AGAIN. BEFORE LEAVING THE PARKING LOT, I CALLED KIA CONSUMER AFFAIRS AGAIN AND WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO SPEAK TO THE NEXT LEVEL UP KIA CONSUMER REP, BUT WHAT I WANTED WAS TO MAKE SURE MY VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE OFF THE LOT (MY CHILDREN REFUSE TO GET IN THE VEHICLE FEARING FOR THEIR SAFETY). THAT EVENING I RECEIVED A CALL AND THE GENTLEMAN WAS NICE AND APOLOGETIC, BUT NOT HELPFUL AND NOW MY CASE IS RESOLVED. I MENTIONED THE MULTIPLE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENTS AND IF THERE IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD I WOULD RECEIVE A FOLLOW-UP CALL, BUT NEVER DID. SEEMS LIKE A CHRONIC ISSUE THAT KIA NEEDS TO RESOLVE OR SOMEONE WILL SERIOUSLY GET INJURED IF NOT ALREADY. SO FAR, IT MIGHT BE EASY TO DETERMINE, BUT I AM NOT EVEN 30% SATISFIED WITH THIS VEHICLE AND IT WILL BE THE LAST KIA I EVER PURCHASE AND IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE BRAND TO ANYONE EITHER. I FEEL FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE A NEWER VEHICLE WITH A WARRANTY, BUT IF I HAD THE OPTION TO GET RID OF IT, I WOULD TODAY. I USE SPEED CONTROL OFTEN. SOMETIMES IT TAKES SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO GET IT TO SET. I NEVER REPORTED IT BECAUSE I KNEW IT WOULD COST A FORTUNE FOR THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSE. I BELIEVE IT IS ACTUALLY PART OF AN ELECTRONIC ISSUE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEATED SEAT NO LONGER WORKS. I WENT TO ADJUST THE VOLUME OF PHONE CALL FROM STEERING WHEEL AND THE IT DISCONNECTED THE CALL. WENT TO TURN VOLUME UP FOR THE RADIO FROM THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE VOLUME WENT DOWN.
