TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 KIA SOUL. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE RACK AND PINION FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 51,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
AS I WAS PARKING IN A GAS STATION PARKING LOT, I HEARD A CLICKING NOISE WHILE THE WHEELS WERE TURNING TO THE LEFT TO PARK. WHEN LEAVING THE PARKING LOT, MY WHEELS WOULD NOT TURN WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I COULD TURN THE STEERING WHEEL 360 DEGREES, AND I WOULD HEAR A CLICKING NOISE, BUT THE WHEELS WOULD NOT MOVE. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED.
STEERING STARTED MAKING A CLUNKING NOISEWHEN TURNED SLIGHTLY LEFT OR RIGHT. THE DEALER SAYS THAT THE STEERING RACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE PART NEEDED TO ORDERED. THE DEALER WOULD NOT RELEASE THE CAR TO ME BECAUSE IT IS NOT SAVE TO DRIVE. THIS IS A 2014 KIA SOUL+ THAT HAS 36000 MILES. I SEE THAT OTHER SOULS HAVE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM.

FRONT DRIVE AXLE NUT WAS LOOSE AND CAUSING THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. NO WORK WAS EVER DONE ON THE VEHICLE IN THAT AREA SO THE NUT LOOSENED ON ITS OWN, NEARLY CAUSING THE ENTIRE WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO COME OFF THE VEHICLE. TORQUE WAS CHECKED ON THE NUT AFTER DISCOVERY AND WAS FOUND TO BE WAY LESS THAT THE FACTORY SPEC. OF ~170 TO 198FT. LBS. NUT HAS NO "LOCKING" MECHANISM TO PREVENT BACK OUT!
HEAD LIGHTS GO OUT AT NIGHT AND DAYTIME WHEN IN MOTION AT LEAST 5 TIMES AND HAVE STAYED OUT FOR AS LONG AS 20 SECONDS. SWITCH IS IN THE ON POSITION. HAS HAPPENED WHEN IN MOTION, TURNING WITH SIGNAL ON, WHEN SETTING STILL IN TRAFFIC, IN MOTION WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER, SITTING STILL IN DEALER SERVICE WRITING AREA. GREEN LIGHT ON DASH DISPLAY SOMETIMES GOES OUT AND SOMETIMES STAYS ON EVEN WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OFF. LIGHTS WERE MALFUNCTIONING THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER--HEAD LIGHTS WERE OFF, PARKING LIGHTS WERE ON AND SWITCH WAS IN THE ON POSITION--THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED WHEN CONNECTED TO DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT. DEALER WILL NOT FIX UNTIL PROBLEM IS DETECTED BY DIAGNOSTIC EQUIP. BATTERY HAS ALSO BEEN RUNDOWN WHEN PARKED FOR AS SHORT A PERIOD AS 3 1/2 DAYS WHEN NOTHING HAS BEEN LEFT PLUGGED IN.
STEERING WHEEL BEGAN DOING CLUNKY NOISES, TOOK TO DEALER, THEY FIXED IT, 4 DAYS LATER STEERING WHEEL SNAPPED OFF LEAVING ME WITHOUT CONTROL DURING A TURN, NO ACCIDENT THANKFULLY FOR GOING LESS THAN 20 MI AT THE TIME, TOOK BACK TO DEALER TO BE FIXED. NOT SURE I TRUST IT ANYMORE.
WIFE WAS DRIVING HIT ROAD DEBRIS AND THE WHEEL SPLIT INTO TO PIECES. THE INNER RIM SEPARATED FROM THE OUTER RIM. WHEEL IMMEDIATELY WENT FLAT, WIFE PULLED OVER THINKING THAT THE TIRE HAD GONE FLAT, BUT UPON INSPECTION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE WHEEL HAS SPLIT IN TWO.
WHEN DRIVING WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON THEY WILL RANDOMLY TURN OFF FOR A BIT THEN TURN ON AGAIN, BUT SOMETIMES THIS REQUIRES TRYING TO TURN THE HEADLIGHTS OFF THEN ON AGAIN. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP WHERE A CHECK WAS RUN ON IT, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT UNTIL THE PROBLEM CAN BE DISCOVERED.

DRIVING ON HWY 10- APRIL 14 AND 17, 2016, POWER STEERING WENT OFF. JERKING THE WHEEL RIGHT OR LEFT BROUGHT POWER STEERING BACK. TOOK TO DEALER ON APRIL 26, BUT PROBLEM WAS NOT DUPLICATED.
THE STEERING WAS MAKING A POPPING AND GRINDING NOISE WHEN TURNING. WE TOOK IT IN FOR THE STEERING RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ( JANUARY). THE STEERING WENT OUT ON THE VEHICLE LAST NIGHT. THE VEHICLE HIT THE CURB. WE GOT THE VEHICLE HOME AND CALLED FOR TOWING TODAY TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. NO ONE WAS INJURED. MY PARENTS ARE NOT SAFE DRIVING BACK AND FORTH TO THEIR DOCTORS VISITS IN THIS VEHICLE.
DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHTS INTERMITTENT WHEN USING R TURN SIGNAL, NOT WORKING 90% OF TIME. PROBLEM STARTED @ 45,000 MILES. DEALER NOTIFIED, COULDN'T REPAIR DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO REPLICATE PROBLEM. NOW AT 73,000 MILES, WITH NO OPERABLE DRIVER HEADLIGHT.

THE CONTACT SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT, BUT THE DEALER DID NOT PROVIDE THE REPAIRS WITHIN THE TIMEFRAME THAT THEY INDICATED. THE DEALER DID NOT OFFER A LOANER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

HEADLIGHT WAS INTERMITTENTLY GOING ON AND OFF. WOULD WORK FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL MINUTES AFTER TURNING IT ON FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A DAY, BUT SEEMED TO GO OUT AFTER IT WAS WARMED UP. WENT TO CHANGE THE BULB AND DISCOVERED THAT THE PLUG THAT THE HEADLIGHT BULB PLUGGED IN TO WAS PARTIALLY MELTED AND BROWN, AS IF IT HAD OVERHEATED OR CAUGHT ON FIRE BRIEFLY. DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY UNDER WARRANTY. NOTES FROM DEALERSHIP BELOW: COMPLAINT C/S PASS HEADLIGHT IS OUT AND THE OUTLET IS BURT CHECK AND ADVISE CAUSE FOUND INTERNAL CONNECTOR TO BULB BURNT/MELTED. HAS ORIGINAL HEADLIGHT BULB. INSPECTED FOR BROKEN WIRES- FOUND NONE CORRECTION JCO HEADLIGHT ASSY, UNDER WARRANTY
DESPITE THE FIXED RECALL OF THE STEERING COUPLER, THIS VEHICLE MAKES A STEERING CLUCK NOISE WHEN TURNING WHICH CAN BE FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS ESPECIALLY OCCURS WHEN FIRST DRIVING THE VEHICLE. WHILE UNDER WARRANTY THE DEALERSHIP REPORTED EITHER THE SOUND WAS NORMAL OR THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE IT. NOW THAT IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. A QUICK SEARCH SHOWS THAT EVEN AFTER THE STEERING COUPLING RECALL, THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WHICH CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS.
HEADLIGHTS GO ON AN OFF
I BOUGHT MY 2014 KIA SOUL WITH 6 MILES ON IT NOV 2013. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM WITH MY HEADLIGHTS TURNING OFF WHEN I USE MY TURN SIGNAL OR AFTER USING MY TURN SIGNAL. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM FIXED. FINALLY BIG RED SPORTS & IMPORTS TOOK A KIA SOUL OFF THEIR CAR LOT (AFTER MY 3RD TRIP THERE & THEY STILL DIDN'T HAVE THE PART) TO PUT A NEW PART IN MY CAR TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I STILL HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY HEAD LIGHTS SO I TOOK MY KIA TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP. NOW MY CAR WON'T GO INTO REVERSE AT TIMES,AND WHILE I'M "TRYING" TO PUT IT IN REVERSE MY AUTOMATIC LOCKS START LOCKING AN UN-LOCKING REALLY FAST. I HAVE TO TURN MY CAR OFF, AND TRY TO START ALL OVER SO IT WILL GO INTO REVERSE. I HAVE ALSO ALREADY HAD TO HAVE THE BATTERY REPLACED. MY WORRY IS MY SAFETY WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH MY HEAD LIGHTS WANTING TO WORK WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT. OR IF I GET STRANDED SOMEWHERE BECAUSE MY CAR WON'T SHIFT GEARS. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THREE DIFFERENT DEALERS FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. A FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS PERFORMED AT ONE DEALER AND THE OTHER TWO DEALERS STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. THE FAILURE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SECOND INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO CHECKED OUT THE ELECTRICAL SOCKETS AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE RIGHT SOCKET MELTED WHILE THE LEFT SOCKET HAD BURNED OUT 50 PER CENT. THE TECHNICIAN DOCUMENTED HIS FINDINGS AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A THIRD INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO VISUALLY NOTED 'AN ELECTRICAL SHORT', AND ALSO STATED THAT THE RIGHT SOCKET BURNED 100 PERCENT AND THAT THE LEFT ONE WAS ALMOST BURNED OUT. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT IT WAS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE WINN KIA OF FREMONT, DEALER, LOCATED AT: 5633 JOHN MUIR DR, NEWARK, CA 94560, WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL AND SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD THE CONTACT THAT SOMEONE WOULD CALL BACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NO ONE CALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 36,000.

SOUL+ HAS ROTTEN EGG/EXHAUST SMELL COMING INTO THE CABIN AS VEHICLE IS DRIVEN. CANNOT BE DRIVEN WITH WINDOWS ALL THE WAY UP. DOESN'T MATTER IF AC/HEAT IS ON OR OFF. PERIODICALLY, SMELL COMES AND GOES AS IT IS DRIVEN. DOES NOT MATTER IF IT IS SURFACE STREETS OR HIGHWAY DRIVING...ALTHOUGH IT IS MORE PREVALENT AT 70+MPH. IRRITATES MY ASTHMA...LUNGS HURT AFTER DRIVING FOR A FEW MINUTES AND COUGHING PERSISTS ACCOMPANIED BY A HEADACHE. VEHICLE IS DRIVEN TO AND FROM WORK UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. IT WAS TAKEN IN TO BE SERVICED AND THE TECH TOLD ME TO USE ONLY TOP TIER FUELS. I HAVE USED THEM EXCLUSIVELY FOR SEVERAL WEEKS AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS...SEEMS EVEN WORSE. APPEARS TO BE A LEAK IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM BEFORE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND/OR A BLOCKED CAT. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE IT WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. TAKING A DAY TRIP TO THE CRAYOLA FACTORY, WE WERE 10 MILES FROM OUR DESTINATION WHEN WE FIRST SMELLED SMOKE THEN SAW IT COMING IN THROUGH THE VENTS AND FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER CORNER OF THE VEHICLE. WE WERE ABLE TO SECURE THE KIDS AND GET FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE BUT 3 MINUTES LATER THE CAR WAS GUTTED. NOTHING BUT METAL LEFT ON THE INSIDE. WE HAD NO WARNING THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WHILE DRIVING THE CAR, NO ENGINE LIGHT, NO OVERHEATING - JUST SMELLED AND THEN SAW SMOKE. WE WERE LUCKY WE HAD A PLACE TO PULL OFF ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. I WAS TOLD BY THE POLICE OFFICER THAT I'M LUCKY THAT I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND OPENED THE DOORS BEFORE THE LOCKS MALFUNCTIONED AS HE HAS SEEN IN OTHER KIA CARS. MY 2014 KIA SOUL WHICH I LEASED FOR 39 MONTHS IN JULY 2014, JUST HAD A RECALL FOR A FAULTY GAS PEDAL THAT MAY FRACTURE UNDER EXCESSIVE PRESSURE. ITS GREAT THAT I AM GETTING THE PROBLEM FIXED FOR FREE BUT I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN KIA AND THE MAIN REASON I CHOSE KIA WAS BECAUSE THEY ARE ONE OF THE SAFEST CARS OUT THERE. I PARKED MY CAR AT THE TOP OF MY FRIEND'S VERY STEEP DRIVEWAY. I NEVER PARK DOWN IT BECAUSE WITH THE ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR, I ALMOST GOT STUCK ONCE NOT BEING ABLE TO GIVE THE VEHICLE A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF GAS TO ACCELERATE UP THE STEEP GRADE. I NORMALLY PARK OFF THE ROAD AT THE TOP, BUT DECIDED TO PARK FACING OUT FROM THE DRIVEWAY. EVEN AT THE TOP, THERE IS A GRADE, BUT IT IS NOT RIDICULOUS. I PARKED IN 1ST GEAR (MANUAL) AND PUT THE E-BRAKE ON. MY FRIEND AND I WERE IN HER WALK-OUT BASEMENT FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES WHEN WE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A DOOR SLAMMING SHUT. WE WENT TO THE DOOR AND SAW MY CAR HAD ROLLED DOWN THE 200' DRIVEWAY AND IN TO HER DECK. THE BASEMENT DOOR IS UNDER THE DECK. THE CAR WAS HOLDING THE DECK UP AND THE DECK WAS KEEPING THE CAR FROM CONTINUING OVER A RETAINING WALL AND DOWN A 30' DROP. WE CALLED 911 BECAUSE OF THE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, THE CAR AND DECK STILL MAKING NOISE, NOT KNOWING HOW LONG IT WOULD HOLD, AS WELL AS US BEING TRAPPED IN THE BASEMENT UNTIL IT WAS SECURED. ONCE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD THE WHEELS CHOCKED THEY OPENED THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR TO MAKE SURE THE E-BRAKE WAS ON. THEY VERIFIED THAT IT WAS, IN FACT, ENGAGED. THIS WAS ALL PUT IN THE POLICE REPORT. THERE IS OVER $7K DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND $4K TO THE DECK. KIA INSPECTED TODAY AND DIDN'T FIND ANY DEFICIENCY IN THE E-BRAKE. I HAD THE SINKING SUSPICION THAT NOTHING WOULD BE FOUND. IT MAY HAVE BEEN A MIXTURE OF EVENTS THAT CAUSED THE FAILURE, BUT IT STILL HAPPENED AND WAS STILL A MECHANICAL ISSUE THAT NO ONE-YEAR OLD CAR SHOULD HAVE. *TR
