PURCHASED LAND ROVER DISCOVERY LESS THEN A MONTH AGO, SINCE THEN THE DASH BOARD LOOKS LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE WITH THE NUMBER OF WARNING LIGHTS THAT ARE ON. WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE ABS MODULATOR WAS OUT AND IT WOULD $3500.00 JUST FOR THE PART, EVEN THOUGH I RESEARCHED IT AND FOUND A REPAIR KIT FOR UNDER A $100. HOWEVER, THE MOST RECENT WARNING LIGHT IS THE OIL LIGHT AND THE CAR OVER HEATS IN A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, AND KNOCKS AND BINGS. TECHNICAL SERVICE REPORT FROM INDEPENDENT BRITISH LAND ROVER SPECIALISTS, BETHESDA MD: CUSTOMER STATES ENGINE MAKES A TAPPING NOISE, MOSTLY AT IDLE. DIAGNOSIS - VERIFIED NOISE. OIL LIGHT ON DUE TO LOW OIL PRESSURE, VEHICLE IN VIN RANGE FOR OIL PUMP FAILURE DUE TO MISALIGNED FRONT COVER FROM THE MANUFACTURER. OIL PUMP DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED, AND NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. CORRECT REPAIR IS ENGINE REPLACEMENT, AS DAMAGE TO BEARINGS CAN OCCUR. FAILURE ALSO CAUSED BY BLOCK ALIGNMENT POSITIONING. AT THIS POINT, NO NOTICEABLE ENGINE DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED, AND TO AVOID ENGINE REPLACEMENT CAN REPLACE OIL PUMP ASSEMBLY. MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND AND THEN A SOUND SIMILAR TO METAL SCRATCHING METAL. I HAD A MASTER MECHANIC LOOK AT THE ENGINE AND HAD SEVERAL PART REPLACED 1500.00 WORTH TO BE EXACT AND STILL THE SOUND OCCURS. I CONTACTED LAND ROVER AND BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS USED AND OVER THE WARRANTY THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BUT SUGGEST A NEW ENGINE. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND IT APPEARS THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGE BY LAND ROVER THAT THE LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2003 THE OIL PUMP WAS FAULTY, HOWEVER HAVE DENIED ANY KIND OF SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM TO MULTIPLE CUSTOMERS OTHER THAN SUGGESTING A NEW ENGINE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND AS A CONSUMER WE CAN BE EXPECTED TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS ON A VEHICLE WHICH THE MANUFACTURE KNOWING AND WILLINGLY MANUFACTURE THE A VEHICLE WITH FAULTY EQUIPMENT. THE CONTACT WAS LATER DRIVING 70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE EMITTED A LOUD BANGING NOISE. THE CONTACT MOVED TO THE SHOULDER WHERE HE OBSERVED A FOREIGN OBJECT DISCHARGE FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE AND CAUSE THE GRASS TO CATCH ON FIRE. THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS WERE CONTACTED AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THEY ADVISED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED DUE TO EXTREMELY LOW OIL PRESSURE AND A BLOWN PISTON. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 134,000.

NOTHING WAS MENTIONED ABOUT THE DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THIS 4.6 L ENGINE OR THE ATTACHED MARCH 14, 2003 TECHNICAL ALERT. IN SPITE OF REGULAR SERVICE, THE ENGINE FAILED BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECT AND WE REPLACED THE ENGINE WITH A USED ENGINE. NOW, IT MAY ALSO BE FAILING DUE TO INTERNAL OIL STARVATION. THERE ARE MANY POSTS ONLINE ABOUT THESE ENGINE FAILURES. LAND ROVER SENT OUT THEIR ALERT, BUT DID NOT OFFER THE ONLY REMEDY TO THEIR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT - REPLACE THE ENGINE ($10-12K). LIKE MANY OTHERS, WE HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND BEEN WITHOUT THE CAR WHILE OURS WAS IN THE SHOP BECAUSE OF A KNOWN DEFECT THAT THE LAND ROVER DEALER CHOSE NOT TO SHARE WITH US WHEN WE PURCHASED THE CAR. ATTEMPTS BY OTHERS TO SEEK HELP FROM LAND ROVER OF AMERICA OR THROUGH LEGAL ACTIONS SEEM TO HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. SINCE THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS HAS MOST LIKELY EXPIRED ON THIS MATTER, THERE IS PROBABLY NO WAY TO EVER RECOVER THE FINANCIAL LOSSES. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND THEN MY OIL AND ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED MY OIL PUMP WASN'T ANY GOOD AND I NEEDED TO REPLACE MY ENGINE. AFTER DOING SOME INVESTIGATING I DISCOVERED THERE WAS A TECHNICAL ALERT SENT OUT TO DEALERSHIPS REGARDING 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II OIL PUMP FAILURES. I WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THIS WHEN I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE YEARS AGO. LAND ROVER IS LIABLE FOR THIS AND I WOULD LIKE THEM TO REPLACE MY ENGINE. THEY SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THESE VEHICLES UPON DISCOVERING THE ISSUE. I OWN A 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SE. THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 57,000 MILES AND HAS BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAINED. RECENTLY I NOTICED A TAP COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT OVER TO THE LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER. AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS, I WAS INFORMED THAT IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE IN ORDER TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, AT A COST OF $14,000. WHAT A JOKE! THERE IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS MAINTAINING ADEQUATE OIL PRESSURE IN ORDER TO KEEP THEM RUNNING PROPERLY. ONCE AGAIN THE CONSUMER GETS THE SHAFT. WHILE DRIVING LOW MILEAGE 2003 DISCOVERY II SE7, ENGINE BEGAN TO KNOCK IN UPPER ENGINE AREA ON DRIVER SIDE. PULLED INTO LOCAL REPAIR SHOP IMMEDIATELY AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT A ROD AS THE NOISE DISSIPATES WHEN IDLED ABOVE 1000 RPM. TOOK IT TO A LOCAL LAND ROVER SHOP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS EITHER A BAD OIL PUMP OR THE SLEEVE IN THE CYLINDER AT THE BACK OF THE ENGINE HAS COME LOOSE AND IS KNOCKING UP AGAINST THE HEAD GASKET. TECHNICIAN PRIVATELY INDICATED BOTH ARE KNOWN ISSUES AND THAT A NEW ENGINE IS REQUIRED IN EITHER CASE AND THAT LR NORTH AMERICA KNOWS OF THE ISSUES AND HAS REFUSED TO ASSIST OWNERS OR ISSUE A RECALL. COST OF NEW ENGINE IS BETWEEN $8,000 AND 12,000 DEPENDING ON WHO YOU TALK WITH. SINCE THE ONLY REAL ISSUE SO FAR IS THE NOISE FACTOR (SOUNDS LIKE A DIESEL WHILE IDLING), TECHNICIAN FURTHER ADVISED IT WOULD BE BEST TO KEEP DRIVING THE LR UNTIL IT COMPLETELY FAILED AS THE PRICE OF NEW ENGINE WOULD NOT BE MORE AND I SHOULD GET AS MUCH FROM THE ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE. I HAVE 2003 LAND ROVER, DISCOVERY CAR THAT REQUIRES CONSTANT REPLACEMENT OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND ITS RADIO/CD PLAYER. THIS IS MY FIFTH REPLACEMENT SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR. RESOLUTION WHENEVER AN OIL PUMP FAILURE IS ENCOUNTERED ON VEHICLES WITHIN THE ABOVE VIN RANGE THE ONLY EFFECTIVE REPAIR CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IS REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE ENGINE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE FRONT COVER/OIL PUMP MANUFACTURED TO THE LATEST TOLERANCES. MY LAND ROVER VIN NUMBER FALLS WITHIN THE IDENTIFIED VIN NUMBER RANGE OF AFFECTED VEHICLES. JUMP AHEAD TO 2010. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON 26 MARCH 2010, THE OIL LIGHT CAME AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE RUMBLING SOUNDS. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. FEARING THE WORST, I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AT A COST OF $545 TO MY MECHANIC. MY MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT THE OIL PUMP HAD FAILED. I SPOKE TO THE LAND ROVER DEALER AND TO LAND ROVER OF NORTH AMERICA. NEITHER WOULD COVER THE REPAIR IN SPITE OF THE TECHNICAL ALERT PUBLISHED AND PROVIDED BY THEM ON THIS CONDITION. THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE IS $10,000. I BELIEVE THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OWNERSHIP AND REASONABLE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH A USED VEHICLE. BUT, THE ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE IS NOT REASONABLE. LAND ROVER MADE A MANUFACTURING 'ERROR', PUBLISHED IT AND THEN LEFT THE 'ERROR' TO THE CONSEQUENCE AND EXPENSE OF MYSELF. *TR
