TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT, IT CRASHED INTO A CURB, DROVE OVER THE SIDEWALK, AND INTO THE STREET. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL DEALER (LAND ROVER PARAMUS, 405 NJ-17, PARAMUS, NJ), BUT NO FAILURE CODES WERE LOCATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE THUMB, WHICH DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
WHILE DRIVING OUR 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II HSE TODAY, THE THROTTLE SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY STUCK IN THE FULL POSITION. MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO AVOID TRAFFIC, CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND GET THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LAND ROVER DEALER, AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE THROTTLE BUTTERFLY VALVE HAD STUCK. I RESEARCHED THIS AND CAME UP WITH NHTSA CASE NUMBER 03V133000 WHICH DEAL WITH THIS EXACT ISSUE FOR THIS MODEL YEAR VEHICLE. THE DEALER CLAIMS THERE ARE NO OUTSTANDING RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE AND REFUSED TO REPLACE THE PART UNDER THIS ISSUE. I FIND IT HIGHLY COINCIDENTAL THAT I AM EXPERIENCING THE EXACT ISSUE DESCRIBED IN THE NHTSA CASE. IN REVIEWING THE CASE INFORMATION THERE WERE OTHER REPORTS OUTSIDE OF THE DATE RANGE THAT LAND ROVER CLAIMS APPLY TO THIS DEFECT. I CONTACTED THE LAND ROVER CORPORATE OFFICE AND THEY SAID THEY WERE REVIEWING THE CASE, BUT THAT THE RECALL DID NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE SINCE THE RECALLS ARE VIN SPECIFIC. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE DID ADMIT THAT THIS PROBLEM DOES OCCUR ON OTHER VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE. THERE WAS NO WARNING OF THIS FAILURE AND IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY PURCHASED IN 2007. WHILE MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE RAPIDLY ACCELERATED UP TO 65 MPH. HE HAD TO ENGAGE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IN ORDER TO DECELERATE. HE ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND . THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER , AND THE TECHNICIAN THEN STATED THAT THE FAILURE OF THE SPEED CONTROL CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE UNINTENTIONALLY. HIS VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS EXCLUDED FROM RECALL CAMPAIGN ID 03V133000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES). THE MASTER CYLINDER AND TRANSMISSION WERE REPLACED AT AN EXPENSE GREATER THAN $3,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000. THE CURRENT WAS 87,391.
THIS 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY BELONGS TO A FRIEND. I WAS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, WITH HER PERMISSION, BACK TO OUR HOME AFTER HAVING THE 60,000 SERVICE PERFORMED BY OUR LOCAL MECHANIC. I WAS STOPPED IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF BLOOMSBURY AVE. AND FREDERICE RD. IN CATONSVILLE, MD 21228 AT AROUND 2:30 P.M. THE ENGINE BEGAN TO "ROAR/RACE." EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE BEGAN RACING FORWARD AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL I CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WHICH, IN TURN, HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER. NO AMOUNT OF PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE WOULD STOP THE VEHICLE. (ON TUESDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 5, WHEN MY HUSBAND DROVE THE VEHICLE TO BE SERVICE, THIS ALSO, NEARLY HAPPENED TO HIM. HE WAS ABLE TO STOP JUST BEFORE HE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF OUR DODGE CARAVAN. HE MENTIONED IT TO ME AS AN ODDITY.) INITIALLY, BOTH OF US THOUGHT THAT WE HAD OUR FEET EXTENDED OVER TO THE ACCELERATOR. BUT AFTER DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH WE DISCOVERED THIS RECALL. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH LAND ROVER WHICH IS RESEARCHING THE VEHICLE AND WILL PROBABLY CALL IT INTO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED. I AM CONFIDENT THAT I DID NOTHING TO CAUSE THIS INCIDENT AND THINK THAT LAND ROVER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGES. THANKFULLY, NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR

THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY RETURNED TO 65 MPH AND WAS ABLE TO BE PULLED OFF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS APPLIED IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA RECALL # 03V133000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES). THE VIN, PURCHASE DATE, ENGINE SIZE, AND # OF CYLINDERS WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 70,000.
2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY S. TODAY VEHICLE SURGED AFTER APPLYING PEDAL AND WOULD NOT STOP...OR SHOULD SAY WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP AND ALMOST RESULTED IN CAR PLUNGING INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. I KNOW BELOW I'VE ONLY LISTED ONE FAILURE BUT ONCE IS ENOUGH IT IS JUST LUCK MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OUT OF TRAFFIC. I CALLED LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA SHORTLY AFTER BUYING VEHICLE TO FIND OUT IF ANY RECALLS WERE LISTED FOR VEHICLE AFTER FINDING A RECALL THAT DEALT WITH EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. HOWEVER THEY TOLD ME THE RECALL DID NOT APPLY TO MY VIN...THEN ONLY A WEEK LATER I HAVE THE EXACT PROBLEM WITH MY LAND ROVER. SINCE BUYING OUR LAND ROVER DISCOVERY IN FEBRUARY 2004 WE'VE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS RECALLS AND PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. FORTUNATELY, IT IS STILL UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM OF CONCERN AT THIS POINT IN TIME IS AS FOLLOWS: WHEN BRAKING, THE LAND ROVER WOULD OCCASIONALLY LURCH FORWARD A LITTLE BIT...ALMOST JUMPING. ON OCT. 28, 2005 AT APPROXIMATELY 2:45 PM I PULLED OUT OF MY SUBDIVISION ONTO 180TH ST. IN ELKHORN, NE. I WAS HEADING SOUTH TOWARDS A STOP LIGHT AT THE JUNCTION OF 180TH ST. AND PACIFIC. THERE WHERE NUMEROUS CARS STOPPED AT THE LIGHT. I BELIEVE THE LIGHT HAD TURNED GREEN AND CARS WERE BEGINNING TO MOVE, BUT I WAS STILL BRAKING SLOWLY STARTING TO MOVE FORWARD AS THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME BEGAN TO MOVE. I FELT MY LAND ROVER LURCH FORWARD AND MY BODY WAS IMMEDIATELY PRESSED BACK INTO MY SEAT. AT THAT POINT THE LAND ROVER MADE IMPACT WITH A PIECE OF TORO IRRIGATION MACHINERY BEING TOWED BY THE VAN IN FRONT OF ME AND MY BODY WAS THROWN FORWARD. I WAS WEARING MY SEAT BELT. MY AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS OVER $7700 WORTH OF DAMAGE DONE TO THE FRONT OF THE LAND ROVER. *JB
WHILE PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY THE ACCELERATOR STUCK. THE DRIVER HAD TO APPLY EXCESSIVE FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. *AK *SCC *JB
