TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FAILED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO DRIVE WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
THE LIGHTS WERE ON IN NORMAL MODE WHEN I HEARD A CLICK AND THEY SUDDENLY CUT OUT. I WAS DRIVING SLOWLY IN TOWN AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER; I DISCOVERED THAT I COULD HOLD THE TURN SIGNAL CONTROL SIGNAL FOR THE PASSING BRIGHTS AND GET LIGHT; OTHERWISE NO LIGHTING WOULD TURN ON REGARDLESS OF ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE THE LIGHTING MODE AND RESTARTING THE CAR. EVENTUALLY THE LIGHTS CAME BACK DAYS LATER, BUT HAVE CONTINUED TO CUT OUT INTERMITTENTLY EVER SINCE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD AS THERE IS NO PREDICTING THE FAILURE, AND THE BRIGHTS ARE NOT GOOD TO HAVE TO HOLD TO USE. *JS
THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM -- THIS WINTER THE HEADLIGHTS STARTED TURNING OFF ON THEIR OWN, FORCING YOU TO HOLD THE BRIGHTS IN POSITION SO AS TO CONTINUE DRIVING AT NIGHT. AT FIRST THEY CAME BACK ON. NOW THEY COME BACK ON RARELY. THE FIRST TIME THE LIGHTS ARE PUT ON AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN PARKED FOR A WHILE THEY MAY STAY ON (BETTER THAN 50/50 CHANCE). BUT AFTER TURNING CAR OFF DURING NIGHT AND RESTARTING, THE LIGHTS ALWAYS FAIL A FEW MINUTES OR LESS INTO YOUR DRIVE. WHY HASN'T FORD BEEN FORCED TO RECALL THIS? *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS AT APPROX 8:00 PM, MY LIGHTS WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND I TRIED TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF AND ON AGAIN, BUT THEY WOULD NOT COME BACK ON. I WAS ABOUT 1 MILE FROM MY HOME NEAR MY SUBDIVISION ENTRANCE AND I HAD TO DRIVE THE REST OF THE WAY HOME WITHOUT MY LIGHTS. LATER, AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT YOU CAN USE THE FLASH TO PASS HIGH BEAMS IF THIS SHOULD OCCUR. THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED OFTEN AFTER THE INITIAL OUTAGE AND I REPLACED THE LCM. THE REPLACEMENT LCM IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU DO NOT THINK THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE A RECALL. IT IS DANGEROUS TO THE DRIVER AND OTHER MOTORISTS AS WELL. *TR
WE HAD JUST LEFT A FUNERAL HOME AND DRIVING BACK HOME ON A 4 LANE ROAD. WE TURNED TO AVOID GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY IMMEDIATELY AND DECIDED TO TAKE ANOTHER ROUTE. AS WE WERE HEADING UP THIS 2 LANE ROAD THAT WAS DARK ALL OF A SUDDEN OUR HEADLIGHTS AND INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS WENT OUT AND CARS COMING AT US WERE FLASHING THEIR LIGHTS. I SLOWED DOWN AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO A SIDE STREET. SAT THERE TRYING TO DETERMINE WHY THE LIGHTS WERE OUT. TURNED THE SWITCH FROM THE ON POSITION TO THE AUTOMATIC POSITION AND THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. WE DROVE ALL THE WAY HOME ON BACK ROADS TO AVOID GETTING ON THE INTERSTATE, NOT KNOWING IF THE LIGHTS WOULD GO OUT OR NOT. READ THE MANUAL TO SEE IF WE HAD MISSED ANYTHING AND THEN GOT ON THE INTERNET AND SAW THE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO THEM. I WILL CONTACT THE DEALER AND SEE ABOUT FIXING IT BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE IS BAD AND SO ARE THE REPLACEMENTS. I AM HOPEFUL THAT THERE IS A NEWER IMPROVED MODEL THAT IS NOW BEING USED. THANK GOD WE WERE NOT ON THE HIGHWAY OR WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. *TR
DRIVING ALONG AT NIGHT WHEN HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. TRIED ALL SWITCH POSITIONS WITH NO RESULTS. EVENTUALLY FOUND THAT I COULD GET LIGHTS ON BY PULLING AND HOLDING THE HIGH BEAM LEAVER. THIS PROBLEMS HAPPENS WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I AM NO LONGER DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AT NIGHT UNTIL I GET IT REPAIRED. *TR

THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE HIGH BEAMS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, MY HEADLIGHTS WITHOUT WARNING, EXTINGUISHED. I TURNED THE 'HIGH BEAMS' ON AND THEY ALSO FAILED TO LIGHT. I STOPPED AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES, THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT MANY FORD CROWN VICTORIA / MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS (MULTIPLE MODEL YEAR) AUTOMOBILES ARE SUFFERING FROM THE SAME PROBLEM. IT IS APPARENTLY A FAILURE IN THE 'LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE' (LCM). THERE ARE MANY WEB SITES THAT OFFER RE-MANUFACTURED LCM'S BUT I QUESTION WHY THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL? I THINK THAT LOSING YOUR HEADLIGHTS WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT WOULD SOMEHOW QUALIFY AS A SAFETY HAZARD AND THIS SHOULD BE THE MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE MY HEADLIGHTS CUT OFF. MY PARKING LIGHTS REMAINED ON. THE ONLY WAY TO SEE THE ROAD WAS TO HOLD THE HIGH BEAM SWITCH. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS. THERE IS NO PATTERN OF OCCURRENCE. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY LIGHTS SUDDENLY WENT OUT NOT COMING BACK ON. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND THE ENGINE RPMS WOULD IDLE ABNORMALLY VERY HIGH SECONDS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE OCCURRING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER HOWEVER, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER THEN RECOMMENDED HAVING THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED BUT COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE REPAIR WOULD REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
DRIVING HOME FROM LAKE FOREST COLLEGE (LAKE FOREST ILLINOIS) TO PARMA MICHIGAN HEADLIGHTS TURNED OFF SUDDENLY TRAVELING DOWN HIGHWAY AT 70MPH WITHOUT ANY WARNING. MANAGED TO TURN EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON AND GET SAFELY OFF HIGHWAY. INCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND THE KALAMAZOO MICHIGAN AREA, HAD BEEN ON HIGHWAY APPX.3 HOURS. *TR

THE CONTACT HAD TO USE THE HAZARD LIGHTS FOR ILLUMINATION OF THE ROADWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WAS A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND BELIEVED THAT THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 71,000.
THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE LIGHTS GO OUT ON THE MERCURY MARQUIS. IT IS INTERMITTENT. SOMETIMES, THEY WILL GO BACK ON. I HAVE TO HOLD THE HIGH BEAM TO GET HOME. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! THEY SHOULD HAVE A RECALL AND STOP TRYING TO SLIDE OVER THE ISSUE. *TR

DRIVING AT NIGHT WHEN HEAD LIGHTS WENT OUT ALL OTHER LIGHTS WERE ON. WE COULD KEEP THE HIGH BEAMS ON BY HOLDING DIMMER SWITCH UP. LIGHTS WOULD COME ON AND THEM GO OFF AGAIN.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. WHILE DRIVING AFTER DARK THE HEADLIGHTS AND DASHBOARD LIGHTS WENT DARK. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE THE LIGHTS, THEY CAME BACK ON. WITHIN TEN MILES, THIS EVENT OCCURRED TWO MORE TIMES. I WENT TO MY LOCAL MERCURY DEALER WHO TOLD ME THAT THE MODULE THAT CONTROLLED THE HEADLIGHTS AND DASHBOARD LIGHTS WAS NOT AVAILABLE. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT HIS ORDERING SYSTEM ALSO SHOWED HIM THAT THERE WERE ALMOST 600 OF THESE PARTS WERE ON BACK-ORDER. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT ONE OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE MODULE WAS UNAVAILABLE AND THAT THERE WAS NO ANTICIPATED DATE WHEN THE MODULE MIGHT BE AVAILABLE. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT 2005 WAS THE ONLY MODEL YEAR THAT THIS PART WOULD FIT AND THAT THE 2004 OR 2006 SIMILAR PARTS WOULD NOT WORK IN THE 2005 MODEL YEAR. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT IF THE PART WERE AVAILABLE THAT IT WOULD COST ALMOST $600 DOLLARS NOT INSTALLED. THIS PART ALSO FITS THE 2005 FORD CROWN VICTORIA BUT NO OTHER MAKES OR MODELS. THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT FORD RE-ENGINEERED THIS MODEL FOR THE 2005 MODEL AND DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS A FAULTY DESIGN AND REDESIGNED IT FOR THE 2006 MODEL AND FAILED TO REPORT THE PROBLEM TO ANYONE. THEY HAVE USED UP ALL OF WHATEVER INVENTORY OF THESE PARTS THEY EVER MANUFACTURED AND APPEAR TO HAVE NO PLANS TO MAKE ANY MORE. I HAVE SHOPPED MOST OF FLORIDA'S JUNK YARDS AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE ANY 2005 MERCURY OR FORD CARS FROM WHICH TO OBTAIN A USED PART. BEFORE DAYLIGHT THIS MORNING WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE TO THE DOCTOR, THE HEADLIGHTS AND DASH LIGHTS WENT OUT ONCE AGAIN AND CAME BACK ON AFTER ABOUT A MILE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I BELIEVE THAT YOUR AGENCY SHOULD NOT ONLY REQUIRE FORD TO DEVELOP AN IMMEDIATE FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT SHOULD REQUIRE FORD TO SUPPLY THIS PART AT NO COST TO THE AFFECTED OWNERS SINCE IT IS PRETTY CLEAR THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND TRIED TO HIDE IT FROM THE PUBLIC AND THE GOVERNMENT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT RE-ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN THEN ADVISED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT KIT WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

THE FAILURE RECURRED ONE YEAR LATER, WHICH WOULD REQUIRE THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT PRE-TENSIONER TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT AND THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE STEERING WHEEL AIR BAG MAY NOT DEPLOY SUFFICIENTLY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH UNLESS THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AT 5:50 AM IN THE DARK WHEN ON COMING TRAFFIC BEGAN FLASHING THEIR HEADLIGHTS AT ME. I THEN NOTICED THAT MY HEADLIGHTS (WHICH I ALWAYS HAVE SET ON AUTOMATIC) HAD GONE OUT WITHOUT WARNING. I HAD TO DRIVE A SHORT DISTANCE TO FIND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE SUN CAME UP TO CONTINUE DRIVING TO WORK. I GOGGLED THIS HEADLIGHT PROBLEM AND FOUND IT IS A VERY COMMON FAILURE OF THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE IN THE 2003-2005 FORD CROWN VICTORIA AND MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. I CONTACTED FORD MOTOR CO. BUT WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THESE CARS WITH THIS COMMON AND VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT AND WAS DIRECTED TO TAKE MY CAR TO A FORD DEALER FOR SERVICE.
