The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the ABS hydraulic control unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Check engine light airbag light brake light on my car they turned them off and they turned on right after
I RECEIVED A LETTER IN JULY OF 2021 ABOUT THE ABS CONTROL UNIT PROBLEM MY VEHICLE HAS. AT THE MOMENT THAT CONTROL MODULE IS NON-FUNCTIONAL. TO DATE FORD HAS NOT PRODUCED OR MADE AVAILABLE ANY OF THE PARTS NEEDED FOR THIS REPAIR AND WILL NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE VEHICLE WHEN I CALLED THEM. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW LONG I HAVE TO DRIVE A VEHICLE WITH KNOWN DEFECTIVE BRAKES BEFORE FORD IS FORCED TO COMPLETE THIS REPAIR? THERE IS ALSO A BRAKE FLUID ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT CANNOT BE ADDRESSED UNTIL THE NON-FUNCTIONING ABS MODULE IS REPAIRED. THE DEALER REFUSED TO CHANGE THE SAID CORROSIVE FLUID BECAUSE OF THE NON-FUNCTIONING ABS MODULE.
Brake pedal going to floor extending stopping distance. Early in 2022 I took it in for recall S1954. HCU passed test and dealer replaced DOT3 brake fluid with DOt4. 5/24/2022 Brake pedal started going to floor again. Dealer performed self test of hcu and electronic bleed hcu and said pedal was somewhat better but needed $400 of brake work to for Brake pads, lining and turn rotors. Car functioned fine for a few days. In early June I was driving on a wet street and put on the brakes. It appeared the ABS system was trying to kick in and suddenly the pedal again went to the floor. I was barely able to miss rear-ending a city bus. I pulled into a gas station, turned the car off. When I started it again the brake pedal went to the floor. After pumping it a number of times it came back up and was again functioning. Took it to dealer on 6/1/22. Dealer again tested the hcu test which once again it passed. They could find no other problems. Dealers recommended replacing the abs modlule and master cylinder to the tune of $1,400. Seems like they can test and find out which part isn't malfunctioning (hcu which is under recall), but cant test to find out which part is malfunctioning (ABS module or master cylinder) There is obviously still serious issue with the brake system on these cars that is not being corrected by the initial hcu recall. It needs to be fixed before someone is killed. There were no warning lights or messages relating to the brakes.
2009 MERCURY MILAN. CONSUMER STATED THAT AFTER HAVING SAFETY RECALL REPAIRED THEY ARE STILL EXPERIENCING ISSUES RELATED TO THE SAFETY RECALL.
Manufacturer Recall Number19S54 NHTSA Recall Number19V904 This recall has been on file since: Dec 18,2019. There is still no remedy. I believe this issue is causing my vehicle to have significant delays in braking into a complete stop. The manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall for my vehicle in a timely manner, so I would like to file a formal complaint.
After receiving the Safety Recall Notice 19S54 in the mail, I contacted my local Ford dealership and set up an appointment. On May 24, 2021, I brought my car to the dealership for this recall. At this time, I explained that the brake pedal was going to the floor intermittently. The car had 134,880 miles on it. The Hydraulic Control Unit was inspected and supposedly passed. So the dealer flushed the brake system and replaced the cap. After leaving the dealership, the car sat for several weeks. Two weeks after driving it again, I noticed that the brake pedal was going to the floor and it was difficult to stop the vehicle. I called the dealer and set up another appointment. The dealer had me wait about two weeks. On August 2nd, I brought my car back to the dealer for the same brake issue (Safety Recall 19S54). At this time the car had 135,492 miles. Again they inspected the brakes and the Hydraulic Control Unit. This time they found the HCU Assembly to be faulty and recommend that it be replaced. However, Ford Motor Company is refusing to cover this part under the Safety Recall 19S54 because they closed the recall after the May appointment. They want us to pay over $1500 to have it fixed.

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Milan. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The contact stated that prior to the recall repair, the ABS warning light would appear intermittently. After the recall repair, the ABS warning light was illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair and the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) was tested as part of the recall repair, which it failed. The dealer informed the manufacturer of the failure however, the manufacturer declined the coverage for the HCU part replacement. The vehicle was not repaired and the dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was safe to drive with the ABS warning light illuminated. The failure mileage was 189,000.
2009 Mercury Milan. Consumer writes in regard to NHTSA Safety Recall 19V-904. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL. THE CONSOMER WAS DIRECTED TO PAY FOR THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT, DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE.

THERE IS A FEDERAL RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. I HAVE SET UP AN APPOINTMENT TWICE WITH MATHEWS FORD IN NEWARK, OHIO. THEY HAVE FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN THEY SAID BECAUSE OF COVID THEY WERE NOT FIXING THEM. I SPOKE TO A REPRESENTATIVE FROM FORD WHO SET UP A SECOND APPOINTMENT. THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO PICK UP THE CAR ON 02/24 AND NEVER ARRIVED.

THE CONTACT THEN CALLED UNIVERSITY FORD NORTH (5331 N ROXBORO ST, DURHAM, NC 27712) WHERE SHE WAS INFORMED THAT THE PART WAS NOT YET AVAILABLE AND TO CALL BACK IN MID-MARCH FOR AN UPDATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FORD COMPANY DOES NOT PROVIDE ME WITH LOANER CAR, EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY ON THE RECALL NOTICE THAT THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE A CRASH.

THIS IS THE 4TH TIME I HAVE BEEN ON A SMALL INCLINE AND LOST BRAKES. I HAD THE CAR AT FORD A MONTH AGO THEY ADMITTED BRAKES RECALLED, CANT GET PART. RELEASED CAR TO ME. TODAY WITH MY CHILD IN THE CAR, I WAS TRAVELING @30MPH ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE FOR A STOP SIGN ON A SMALL INCLINE. THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, I BLEW PAST THE SIGN AND NARROWLY MISSED HAVING AN ACCIDENT. THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT AND BACK QUIT WORKING. NO LONGER ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM INSIDE. IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS

VEHICLE HAS A BRAKE SAFETY RECALL 19S54 FROM JANUARY 2020. IN JUNE OF 2020 ISSUES BEGAN WHERE WHEN WE APPLY THE BRAKES AT TIMES THEY WORK FINE AND OTHER TIMES THE VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP FOR AN UNACCEPTABLE EXTENDED AMOUNT IF TIME. THE VEHICLE IN JUNE WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR MVA WHERE THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO SWERVE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT STOPPING IN A TIMELY FASHION. LUCKILY THIS RESULTED IN ONLY MINOR COSMETIC DAMAGE (SCRAPES THAT COULD BE BUFFED OUT AT NO CHARGE) TO BOTH VEHICLES AND WITH NO INJURIES. THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY WAS CONTACTED AND THEY STATED THAT I COULD PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE PARTS BUT THAT THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. I SPOKE WITH WEST HERR FORD, AMHERST NY AND THEY STATED THEY DO NOT HAVE PARTS FOR THAT RECALL. THIS VEHICLE HAS REMAINED IN THE DRIVEWAY SINCE JUNE. TWO DAYS AGO THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE MOVED TO ANOTHER PLACE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND WHILE IN REVERSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP AND HAD TO BE SHIFTED ABRUPTLY INTO PARK TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE ISSUE IS SPORADIC AND SO YOU HAVE NO WARNING AS TO WHEN THE VEHICLE MAY NOT STOP. THERE IS NO WAY TO MAINTAIN A SAFE DISTANCE WHEN DRIVING BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF TIME AND SPACE NEEDED TO STOP THE VEHICLE VARIES EVERY TIME. THE AMOUNT OF TIME IT IS TAKING TO REPAIR THE SAFETY ISSUE IS UNACCEPTABLE. I HAVE CONCERNS WITH THE VEHICLE NOT BEING SAFE TO DRIVE AND I DO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE TIME FRAME FOR FORD CUSTOMERS TO HAVE A UNSAFE VEHICLE THAT IS COSTING MONEY SITTING IN A DRIVEWAY. WE DO NOT HAVE EXTRA VEHICLES AND ARE IN NEED OF A WORKING VEHICLE FOR TRANSPORTATION. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR ATTENTION IN THIS MATTER FOR A TIMELY RESOLUTION TO REPAIRING THE VEHICLE OR PROVIDING AN ALTERNATE METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION TO THOSE CUSTOMERS WITH VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. SOFT BRAKE PEDAL CAUSING EXTENDED STOPPING
MAY 16,2020 I NOTICE MY BREAKS STOP WORKING.. MAY 18,2020 I WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE WHEN I NOTICE MY BREAKS WEREN'T WORKING AND HAD GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT WHICH MESSED MY REAR BUMPER AND TRUNK UP. I DIDN'T REALIZE MY BREAKS WERE HAVING ISSUES UNTIL MAY 22,2020 WHEN THE CAR SAID 'BRAKE FLUID LEVELS LOW' MAY 23RD,2020 I DECIDED TO PURCHASE BRAKE FLUID WHICH IT STILL DIDN'T ATTEMPT TO HOLD ANYTHING. CAR STARTED OUT SUPER LOUD LIKE MY BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE GOING BAD, ONCE THE BRAKE FLUID WAS IN PLACE IT STOPPED THE NOISE BUT DIDN'T STOP THE CAR FROM SAYING LEVEL IS LOW NOR HELPED THE BRAKES.*DT*JB*DT*JB

ON DECEMBER 6, 2019 I WAS AT A RED LIGHT ON SPRINGDALE ROAD. HEARD A LOUD POP SOUND. I JUMPED. THEN I THOUGHT IT WAS MY TIRE. LIGHT TURNED GREEN. I TURNED LEFT AND MY TIRES FELT FINE. THEN I STARTED HEARING THIS STRANGE CRACKLING SOUND BEHIND ME. MY GET WAS AN ANIMAL MY BE IN MY TRUNK. I LOOKED IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR TO SEE THAT MY WHOLE GLASS WAS SHATTERED. GLASS IS EVERYWHERE IN MY CAR. I HAVEN'T CLEANED IT OUT. ONLY PLACED A PLASTIC BAG TO COVER OPENING. THANK HEAVEN SO DIDN'T HAVE A BABY IN THE BACK AS REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE CAR SEAT REVERSED.

ANTILOCK BRAKES ACTIVATED BASED ON WINTER ROAD CONDITIONS. AFTER ACTIVATION, BRAKE PEDAL EXPERIENCES A LONGER DISTANCE TO PRESS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE VEHICLE COME TO A STOP. MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE DRIVING, THE PEDAL NEARLY HAD TO BE AT THE FLOOR BEFORE VEHICLE WOULD COME TO A STOP. THIS RESULTED IN SEVERAL NEAR MISSES AT RED LIGHT INTERSECTIONS WHEN THE VEHICLE SIMPLY WOULD NOT STOP NORMALLY. TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY EXPLAINED IT WAS A FAULTY HCU. THE REPAIR COST WOULD BE CLOSE TO $1000. SINCE THERE IS AN ONGOIJNG INVESTIGATION INTO THESE DEFECTIVE HCU'S, I WOULD APPRECIATE THE NHTSA REQUIRING A RECALL OF THE FUSION AND MILAN HCUS AFFECTED. THIS IS A SAFETY RISK AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE THE CUSTOMER TO REPLACE THE HCU'S AT THEIR EXPENSE IF THERE IS A DEFECT. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH YIELDED HUNDREDS OF COMMENTS REGARDING THE LOSS OF BRAKE FUNCTIONALITY IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS IS NOT A USER ISSUE.
I WAS DRIVING MY 2009 MERCURY MILAN DOWN A DOWNHILL SIDE ROAD ON THE FIRST DAY OF WINTRY ROAD CONDITIONS OF THE 2019 YEAR, AND MY ABS BRAKES ENGAGED AS I HIT SOME ICE. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS INCIDENT AND FOR THE NEXT 20 MILES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING, MY BRAKES FELT VERY SPONGY. SPECIFICALLY, DURING MY NEXT BRAKING ATTEMPT AND EACH SUBSEQUENT ONE FOLLOWING THIS ABS EVENT, MY BRAKE PEDAL JUST WENT STRAIGHT TO THE GROUND EVERY TIME I TRIED TO BRAKE. I COULD FEEL THE BRAKES BEGIN TO ENGAGE ONLY AS THE PEDAL HIT THE GROUND, SO I WASN'T COMPLETELY LACKING BRAKES, BUT I ESSENTIALLY HAD VERY LITTLE BRAKING POWER. IN PREVIOUS VEHICLES, I'VE PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED AIR IN BRAKE LINES AND A FAILED MASTER CYLINDER, AND THIS DID NOT FEEL LIKE EITHER OF THOSE ISSUES -- LESS BRAKING POWER THAN AIR IN THE LINES AND MORE BRAKING POWER THAN A COMPLETELY FAILED MASTER CYLINDER. I ALMOST WRECKED MY CAR A DOZEN TIMES, EVEN THOUGH I RESERVED MYSELF TO DRIVING TENS OF MILES BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT AND LEAVING LOTS OF ROOM IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE CLOSEST AVAILABLE GARAGE (A FIRESTONE) WHERE THEY CONFIRMED THAT I HAD FULL BRAKE FLUID AND SO DISMISSED A MASTER CYLINDER LEAK. THEY DID NOT FIX ANYTHING AT THE GARAGE DUE TO UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THE ISSUE AND THE HIGH PRICE TAG TO SEARCH. MUCH LATER THAT DAY, I RETURNED TO MY CAR TO COMMUTE HOME ONLY TO FIND THAT THE BRAKES WORKED AS THEY HAD PRIOR TO THE MORNING COMMUTE. THE ISSUE SEEMED TO HAVE RESOLVE ITSELF. AFTER COPIOUS RESEARCH, I CAME ACROSS THE "EXTENDED BRAKING DISTANCE" INVESTIGATION (NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA18002) FOR THIS VERY VEHICLE. MY ISSUE SEEMS TO MIRROR THE ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THIS INVESTIGATION QUITE WELL. WHY IN THE WORLD IS THIS NOT A RECALL??? MY LIFE WAS IN GRAVE DANGER THE OTHER DAY, AND NOW I'M TERRIFIED TO DRIVE MY CAR. COME ON, NHTSA/FORD!
BRAKES KEEP GOING MUSHY AFTER ABS ACTIVATES, TAKING SIGNIFICANTLY LONGER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE ABS ACTIVATES OCCASIONALLY FOR NO REASON ON GOOD DRY ROAD CONDITIONS. ALSO, THE ABS LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF IN DRY CONDITIONS.
WHILE CAR IN MOTION ON BUSY STREET I WENT OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT AND HIT BRAKES HARDER THAN NOEMAL BECAUSE UNEVEN PAVEMENT SORT IF JUST APPEARED AND BRAKE PEDDLE WENT LOW. COULD NOT STOP ON TIME. HAD TO ROLL TO STOP. BRAKES ONLY RE ENGAGED AFTER I PULLED OFF ROAD PUT CAR IN PARK TURNED CAR OFF FOR 10 MINS THEN RESTARTED AND REVERSED CAR WHILE PUMPING BRAKES. JUST TERRIFYING AND UNSAFE. I CALLED FORD DEALER WHO SAID THEY'LL LOOK AT IT IN 5 DAYS TIME AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO FIX. GUY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN RUDER. BUT IM TAKING CAR IN AND HOPING IN MEANTIME NOT TO HAVE REPEAT IF DANGEROUS SITUATION. PLEASE ADVISE ANY RECOURSE I HAVE TO PROTECT MYSELF AS CAR OWNER. THANKS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 MERCURY MILAN. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED TO THE FLOORBOARD, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP AND SLOWLY DECREASED IN SPEED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,000. THE VIN WAS INVALID.
THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND BEGINNING TO TURN LEFT. WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS BEING APPLIED, THE ABS ACTIVATED AND THE CAR DID NOT IMMEDIATELY SLOW, BUT SLOWED WITH ADDITIONAL PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL FEET FROM WHERE IT SHOULD HAVE SLOWED BEFORE CONTINUING INTO THE LEFT TURN. SINCE THE INCIDENT, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS NOT AS FIRM WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. BRAKE PEDAL IS SPONGY TO THE TOUCH. THE ABILITY TO STOP PRECISELY AT A PARTICULAR POINT WHILE DRIVING HAS BEEN SEVERELY DIMINISHED AND THE BRAKING DISTANCE HAS BEEN INCREASED. I BELIEVE INVESTIGATION EA18-002 DESCRIBES THE PROBLEM THAT I EXPERIENCED WHILE DRIVING THE 2009 MERCURY MILAN.
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE, THE BRAKE PEDAL CAN GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH LIMITED TO NO BRAKING..... SEEMS TO HAPPEN AFTER GOING OVER A SIGNIFICANT BUMP OR POTHOLE, AND IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGES. (MEANING, AFTER ABS SYSTEM BRINGS THE CAR TO A STOP AND THEN RELEASING THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WILL THEN GO TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT BRAKING UNTIL THE SYSTEM RESETS ITSELF...
"TAKATA RECALL" HAVE RECEIVED MULTIPLE TIMES RECALL WARNINGS ABOUT THIS AIRBAG RECALL. I HAVE CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER AT SARATOGA SPRINGS,NY AND THEY REPORTED THEY DO NOT HAVE PARTS TO REPLACE, ON BACK ORDER. WE HAVE CALLED MONTHS AGO ANOTHER DEALER WHO SAID THE SAME THING. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS A TIME LIMIT ON THIS. WORRIED ABOUT DRIVING CAR.
APPROX. 8 MONTHS AGO CAR DID NOT STOP AFTER APPLYING BRAKES.REPAIR APPROX. $650. NOW 8 MONTHS LATER CAR AGAIN GOES THRU INTERSECTION AFTER APPLYING BRAKES.THIS TIME $260 IN REPAIRS. BRAKES STILL SOFT AND I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THAT CAR WILL SAFELY STOP WHEN NEEDED.
THERE IS A RECALL ON MY MERCURY MILAN 2009. LAST OCTOBER SEPTEMBER OCTOBER I TOOK MY CAR TO HOFFMAN FORD FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE RECALL ON THE AIRBAGS. AFTERWARDS I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RAISING OF THE DASHBOARD WHERE THEY REPLACE THE AIRBAG. I BOUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION, AND THEY SAID IT WAS FROM THE GLUE THAT WAS USED. LATER A FEW MONTHS LATER I NOTICED THE AIRBAG AREA WAS EXPANDING AND FOAM WAS COMING THROUGH THE AIRBAG AREA & VENTS OVER THE.CONSUL.I CALLED FORD MANF TO REPORT THIS ISSUE. THEY SAID TO SOMEONE WILL GIVE ME A CALL BACK ,I NEVER GOT A CALL BACK. ALSO AFTER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE AIRBAGS THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH MY BRAKES.THEY TOLD ME BECAUSE OF THE CAR SETTING THAT IS PROBABLY JUST RUSTY, BUT I WASN'T COMFORTABLE AND I CALLED THEM AND TOLD THEM THAT I WAS GOING TO BRING THE CAR TO THEM AND LOOK AT IT AGAIN BECAUSE SOMETHING WAS DEFINITELY WRONG. THE INVESTIGATOR WHO LOOKED AT THE CAR TO DO THE WORK FOR THE INSURANCE NOTICE THAT THE AIRBAG DOES NOT EXPAND OUT NOTHING ELSE WAS SAID ABOUT THAT BUT OBVIOUSLY THEY DIDN'T CHECK THE BRAKES BECAUSE RIGHT AFTER THAT IS WHEN THE CAR WENT TO HOFFMAN'S AND I NEVER DROVE IT AGAIN TILL THEN AND THAT'S WHEN WE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE BRAKES. NOW JUST THIS WEEK DECEMBER 25TH 2019 THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE BRAKES OF THE MERCURY MILAN 4 MM V I BELIEVE TO 2011. SO I BELIEVE THIS WAS THE REASON FOR THE ACCIDENT. I AM ACTUALLY DRIVING A DEATHTRAP CAR. I HAD MY BACK BRAKES REPLACED WITH NEW BRAKES JUST A YEAR AGO AND A MONTH AGO I HAD TO GET NEW BRAKES AGAIN ALREADY. I HAVE LOST TWO JOBS BECAUSE OF THIS CAR BECAUSE I CANNOT TRANSPORT CHILDREN BECAUSE OF THE HAZARD'S. MY LICENSE HAS POINTS AGAINST IT NOW, I PAID A HIGH DEDUCTIBLE, ALL BECAUSE OF THE RECALLS ON THE BRAKES THAT THEY WOULDN'T ACKNOWLEDGE FROM THE BEGINNING. DURING AN ABS ACTIVATION THE PEDAL WENT SPONGY AND THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS INADEQUATE AFTERWARDS. THE FORD DEALER SAID A BRAKE FLUID BYPASS OCCURRED INSIDE OF THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT OF THE ABS SYSTEM. STATED THAT THEY HAD SEEN QUITE A LOT OF THAT PROB. AND STATED IT OUGHT TO BE INVESTIGATED. VERY DANGEROUS INADEQUATESTOPPING AND INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE!

THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,409. *TT CONSUMER STATED THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED AFTER A MONTH OF BEING AT THE DEALERSHIP. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON CERTAIN MILANS FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. MY 2009 MERCURY MILAN ALMOST HAS NO BRAKES. I WAS DRIVING IN THE SNOW, AND HAD THE ABS ACTUATE, AND IMMEDIATELY THE BRAKE PEDAL ALMOST GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. BEFORE MY ABS WAS ACTUATED MY PEDAL WAS COMPLETELY NORMAL. I'VE DONE A LITTLE RESEARCH AND KNOW THERE IS AN INVESTIGATION ON THIS FOR THE HCU ON THIS MODEL. I BELIEVE MINE IS FAILING AND UNSAFE. I NOTICED ABOUT A YEAR AGO THAT UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, LIKE WHEN BRAKING HARD OR FAST WITH SHORT BRAKING DISTANCE, ON WET OR UNEVEN PAVEMENT, OR WHEN MAKING A TURN WHILE BREAKING, THE BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES VERY SOFT AND TRAVELS TO THE FLOOR CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO DO A NUMBER OF ALTERNATIVE MANEUVERS, SUCH AS MANUALLY PUMPING THE BRAKES OR DOWNSHIFTING TO A LOW GEAR TO SLOW THE ENGINE TO STOP THE CAR. IN SOME CASES, THE CAR DOES NOT STOP AT ALL CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH A RED LIGHT OR AROUND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I NOTICE THAT ONCE I'M STOPPED, IF I PUMP THE BRAKES 10-15 TIMES, THE PLIABILITY SEEMS TO RETURN TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT TO FEEL SAFE. I HAVE SEEN THAT THIS PROBLEM IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION AND AM TOLD THAT THERE IS SOME DEFECT IN THE HYDRAULIC BRAKING SYSTEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE ABS. LIKE MANY OTHERS, I'VE HAD THE PROBLEM EVALUATED AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE ISN'T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE HYDRAULICS, BUT IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. READING WHAT OTHERS HAVE WRITTEN MAKES ME FEEL THAT THIS IS A DEFECT THAT SHOULD FALL UNDER A RECALL AS IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND IS UNPREDICTABLE AND INTERMITTENT. THE COST TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM IS EXCESSIVE FROM THE ESTIMATES I'VE RECEIVED, AND EVEN WHEN THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN "FIXED," IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. I AM NOT IN A POSITION TO SELL THE CAR RIGHT NOW AND DEPEND ON IT EVERY DAY. THE PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED AS IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, JUST LIKE THE GM IGNITIONS WERE. DOES IT TAKE SOMEONE TO DIE BEFORE A RECALL NOTICE IS ISSUED!!! I'M UNSURE OF THE CURRENT MILEAGE (BECAUSE THE CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE REPAIR SHOP), BUT IT'S ABOVE 85,000. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE IN THE CONDITIONS DESCRIBED ABOVE. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN DURING ALL BRAKING EVENTS, JUST THOSE NOTED ABOVE, BUT THIS MAKES IT WORSE BECAUSE IT'S HARDER TO DIAGNOSE.
WHILE TRYING TO STOP ON SLUSHY/SLIPPERY ROADS OUR ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ENGAGED. AFTER THAT OUR BRAKE PEDAL WAS SOFT. IT WENT OVER HALF WAY TO THE FLOOR BEFORE WE COULD FEEL ANY PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES. THIS CAUSED OUR BRAKING DISTANCE TO INCREASE EVERY TIME WE APPLIED THE BRAKES. WE HAD THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT REPLACED ON/ ABOUT JANUARY 11,2019. ON APPROXIMATELY JANUARY 29TH, 2019 WE AGAIN HAD AN ISSUE ON SNOWY/SLUSHY ROADS. WE WERE ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT BUT THE BRAKES ARE AGAIN SOFT AND STOPPING DISTANCE HAS INCREASED. WE CAN NOT AFFORD TO KEEP REPLACING THIS PART ONLY TO HAVE IT GO BAD WITHIN A MONTH. IF THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM OR THIS PART WHY ISN'T FORD BEING MADE TO TAKE CARE OF IT? IF, AS THEY SAY, THE NEWER PARTS ARE MADE OF A DIFFERENT MATERIAL OR ARE COATED DIFFERENTLY THEY SHOULD BE REPLACING THE PART FOR CARS AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM.
