NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2007 Nissan Altima. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I was driving to work on the freeway about 65 mph and after about 20 minutes the engine made a whirring noise, overheating and slight smell of burnt rubber and delayed to Accelerate luckily I was close to my exit I parked vehicle let it cool down. But still has this issue after about 20-30 minutes of driving more than 60mph
I drove my car to work that morning and it was running completely fine. When I went to lunch that same day after 5 mins of driving the car my CVT transmission slipped out of nowhere and lost all power completely while I was on a busy road with lots of traffic almost causing multiple accidents because it happened out of no where and I was unable to get my car off of the road due to having no power. The car gave me no warning signs that anything was wrong until it wouldnt move anymore.
The vehicle shakes, for a lack of better word it shudders during drives short or long, smells of gasoline constantly, randomly decides not to start, has fuel efficiency problems, is prone to overheating, the dealer confirmed there is an issue, but told me they can't do Anything about it because the "fix" used aftermarket parts and they refuse to do anything until the parts are changed back. The dealership even told me I might as well just run the vehicle to the ground due to that issue!
The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the ABS and TPMS warning lights illuminated and the vehicle started to stall. The contact saw smoke coming out from underneath the hood. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. An independent mechanic towed the vehicle to the contact’s residence. The independent mechanic then diagnosed that the transmission fluid and engine coolant were leaking over the engine compartment. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 07V267000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that upon attempting to start the vehicle, the brakes seized. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 232,740.
The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled, causing another vehicle to swipe the driver's side and the driver's side mirror off the vehicle. The contact was injured but did not receive medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 146,000.
The Altima has 170k miles. We’ll taken care off . I was driving to work and out off nowhere the car lost power the speedometer stopped working and wouldn’t show me how fast I was going and I had to stopped and it lost all power. I tried looking everywhere for the problem to fix it and they told me they couldn’t get the part and told to come here and hopefully this helps, at the moment I dint have enough money to buy a car. The car has not been inspected but but the cops Or insurance. There were no warning prior to this accident it happened outta no where .
The Transmission failed at 51,000 miles. It has not come to a grinding halt yet but poses a safety hazard on any long trips. It was only a strange noise that varied with the acceleration that tipped us off that there might be a problem. The car is 14 years old now but my wife put very few miles on it and it still should be working. Regularly maintained by my local Nissan dealer for the lifespan of the car. Having now seen many other notices on Nissan transmissions for this and other model years you think Nissan would have recalled the cars and addressed the problem. I am very disappointed with Nissan and will buy another brand for my wife's next car.
Car shuts down while being driven. Need to restart car, later shuts down again.
The dashboard in my 2007 Altima is melting. It is ultra sticky and isn't cleanable at all. It wreaks of a chemical smell and also puts a glare on the windshield in certain lighting. It's a mess, and it's dangerous. There was a class action lawsuit filed for the issue in Florida and Nissan fixed the Altimas there.
As I was driving north on the 101 in the Carpinteria area, I attempted to brake for a construction zone slowdown. I had about 100ft to brake and was going 50mph compared to the 25mph of the cars up ahead. When I pressed the brakes, they did not fully engage and rather appeared to 'slip'. It felt like the brakes were engaged but not limiting the slow of the car in a significant manner. I rear-ended the car in front of me causing that car to hit the car in front of it. I could smell a strong burnt smell during and after the event. The car and brake piece are still available for inspection for another week or so until insurance is done investigating the car for the report, at which point it will be signed over to the scrapyard where it is currently being held (Steelhead Auto Recycler). This incident absolutely endangered my own life and the lives of the individuals of multiple vehicles around me. If I were going 10mph more than I was at the time I wouldn't be typing this message right now. I had absolutely no control over the speed of the car, and because of the construction there was no way to avoid the car in front of me. The lives of the family in the car in front of me were also especially endangered. The specific piece is not being inspected by the manufacturer or the police, although it possibly could be investigated once insurance does follow up with the report. There were no warnings that this was going to occur. In fact the car had its brakes checked just 2 years prior to this incident and it completely passed inspection with no concerns. Brake failure is not an experience I would wish on anyone in the world. It is absolutely petrifying in the moment and can result in devastation of so many lives.
My 2007 Altima dashboard has been cracking for a few years. The car is parked inside the garage, and during the day while at work, is parked at a parking deck. The dashboard is getting worse over the year at the point pieces of the board are coming off exposing the yellow foam and cracking on areas where the sun don’t reach at. The cracks are all over the dashboard panel and white patches (like board melting) around the glove compartment.
The dashboard is cracking. This causes me concern regarding the airbag and if it will function properly if ever needed. The entire dash has a crack the runs the length left to right and it makes it appear the bottom portion will fall to the floor one day. I started noticing this over the summer. I saw that in Florida there was a class action to fix it. I just think it’s odd because this is an extra car that we no longer drive daily. It stays in a garage out of weather and so it should be perfect. We kept the car for our daughter who is now 16 and will be using it as she starts driving.
THE OWNERS AND OR SELLERS OF THIS DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING VEHICLE THAT WAS SOLD TO ME KNOWING THAT THE CAR WAS IN EXTREMELY BAD CONDITION. THESE CRIMINALS SOLD ME THE VEHICLE KNOWING THAT IT WAS NOT SMOG CLEARED OR APPROVED. THEY SOLD ME A FATAL ACCIDENT WAITING TO O HAPPEN! THEY INTENTIONALLY MODIFIED THE ODOMETER/MILEAGE TO 85K/95K... BUT WHEN I RAN A CHECK ON CAR FAX, IT CLEARLY SHOWED THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS 206,851 MILES OF WEAR AND TEAR TO ENGINE. THE BREAK SYSTEM ALMOST KILLED ME ON THE FREEWAY AND MADE ME LOSE CONTROL AND FORCEFULLY MADE ME SPIN OUT OF DRIVING CONTROL FOR 3 FULL SPINS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY, BU THE GRACE OF GOD, I MISSED ALL INCOMING TRAFFIC.
I RECENTLY JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON SO I CHECKED IT. TURNS OUT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH A CIRCUIT IN THE TRANSMISSION. IT WILL GIVE OUT ON ME.
I WAS DRIVING AND MY CAR STARTED SHAKING. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD TO GO GET IT CHECKED OUT SO I DID AND THE GUY SAID MY TRANSMISSION COULD EXPLODE ON ME, STOP WHILE I'M DRIVING, OR STOP WORKING RANDOMLY.
I HAVE A 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5S WITH CVT TRANSMISSION THAT HAS FAILED AT 181,225 MILES. CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF.. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD A WHINING SOUND STARTED LOST ACCELERATION THEN A VERY LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND THEN SHIFTING ISSUES.. ALL WITH IN 15 MINUTES.. NO WARNING JUST QUIT GOING. MECHANICS STATE IT IS THE TRANSMISSION AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. REALLY LOVE MY CAR BUT THE REPLACEMENT IS SO EXPENSIVE. NISSAN NEEDS TO HELP DUE TO THIS IS AN ON GOING ISSUE.
I WAS ON THE EXPRESS WAY TRYING TO ACCELERATE OVER 40MPH IT REDUCES SPEED AND LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASHBOARD I TOOK THE CAR TO AUTOZONE AND GOT THE CODES AND IT CAME BACK THE POWER TRAIN AND 2 MORE
The driver side door airbag did not deploy after major side impact by a box truck that never engaged the braking system. The Altima under went a safety inspection approximately 30 days prior to the accident. There were no warning lights on the vehicle. The vehicle has been inspected by the NJ State Police, involved Insurance companies and outside engineers. The driver ,my son, of the Altima, was fatally injured due to head trauma. We are unable to load the final police report to the upload link through this form. We can provide the pdf report in a separate cover as needed.

MY 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA DASHBOARD SUDDENLY STARTED HAVING CRACKS. THE CRACKS RUN ALL ALONG THE SEAMS BUT THERE ARE OTHERS THAT JUST CRACKED OUT OF NO WHERE. I HAVE NOTIFIED NISSAN CORPORATE WHO REFERRED ME TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WHEN I TALKED TO MY DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THEY ' WOULD LOOK INTO IT' AND GET BACK WITH ME. I AM AWARE OF THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS IN FLORIDA AND TEXAS AND THEY STATE IT'S THE HEAT. WELL I LIVE IN LOUISIANA JUST AS HOT AND I PARK IN A GARAGE. 80,000 MILES. WITH ALL THESE CRACKS AND GOO AND STICKY STUFF PEOPLE ARE HAVING HAS ANYONE TESTED THIS SUBSTANCE FOR TOXICITY. I NOW HAVE TWO WHITE SPOTS APPEARING. MY CRACKS LOOKS LIKE THE DASHBOARD IS LIFTING AND I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE GASES FROM ' GLUE' THAT HOLDS DASH DOWN. AS A FORMER NURSE THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS AS NO ONE IS TESTING THIS AND IT CAN BE AFFECTING THOUSANDS OF LIVES WHO ARE EXPOSED TO THIS DAILY. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THEY STATE OUT OF WARRANTY. HAVE THEY TESTED THIS. ALL COMPLAINTS ARE 2007 OWNERS. IN MY OPINION THIS NEEDS FURTHER INVESTIGATION DUE TO POSSIBLE SUBSTANCES BEING RELEASED (I HAVE ASTHMA) AND OTHER OWNERS WHO CANNOT SEE OUT THEIR WINDOW. WE HAVE HAD OUR CAR SEVERAL YEARS AND WE ALSO CAN'T ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS WITH OUR KEY OR POWER LOCKS EITHER.

RE: 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA - CVT TRANSMISSION: I WAS ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE AND MORE THAN HALFWAY TO MY DESTINATION, AS I INCREASED ACCELERATION FROM 55 TO 65 MPH, THE ENGINE BEGAN STRAINING AND THE TACHOMETER INCREASED TO 3500 RPMS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT AUTO SHIFT. I BACKED OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND MAINTAINED A SPEED OF 55 MPH. EVENTUALLY, I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION. ON MY RETURN TRIP, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN, THIS TIME ONLY WORSE. AGAIN, I DIDN'T PUSH THE VEHICLE TO HIGH SPEEDS. BY THE TIME I EXITED THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE, I COULD NOT ACCELERATE THE CAR BEYOND 45-50 MPH WITHOUT THE TACHOMETER ONCE AGAIN CLIMBING TO ALARMINGLY HIGH LEVELS. THE ENGINE WHINED AS IF IT WERE STRAINING MIGHTILY TO SHIFT INTO THE PROPER HIGH GEAR. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE CAR TO MY QUALIFIED MECHANIC WHO RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. SEVERAL CODES INDICATED TRANSMISSION FAILURE. MY NISSAN HAS THE CVT TRANSMISSION WHICH I NOW UNDERSTAND IS DEEPLY FLAWED TRANSMISSION. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION UNTIL I DID EXTENSIVE RESEARCH OF MY OWN AND LEARNED THAT MANY NISSAN OWNERS HAD EXPERIENCED SITUATIONS IDENTICAL TO MINE. I CALLED NISSAN AND A CASE WAS CREATED (#34468600). I WAS INFORMED THAT NISSAN HAS COMPLETELY ABSOLVED ITSELF OF ALL RESPONSIBILITY SINCE MY VEHICLE HAS 153K MILES ON THE ODOMETER. AT NO TIME SINCE I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE HAVE I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FROM NISSAN INDICATING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. WHEN A MULTINATIONAL CORPORATION ABSOLVES THEMSELVES OF ALL RESPONSIBILITY AFTER CREATING AND SELLING A PRODUCT THAT IS WELL DOCUMENTED AS BEING DEFICIENT, IT BECOMES EERILY REMINISCENT OF VOLKSWAGEN'S EMISSION SCANDAL AND AUDI'S SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM.
"TAKATA RECALL" I WAS DRIVING IN TOWN & CAR STARTED TO DO SOMEWHAT OF A "JUMP/SKIP" WHEN IT WAS TRYING TO SHIFT GEARS ONE DAY.THEN IT DROVE FINE FOR A FEW DAYS. THEN A FEW DAYS LATER AS I WAS COMPLETING A LEFT HAND TURN, CAR DECIDES THAT IT WASN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING! IT WOULDN'T MOVE & SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT FROM UNDER HOOD. THANK GOODNESS I COASTED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED.MECHANIC INFORMS ME, TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. CAR ONLY HAS 144000 MILES! I'VE CARS THAT HAVE MORE MILES THEN THAT! COME ON NISSAN, WHY ARE YOUR TRANSMISSIONS GOING OUT SO FAST!
My 2007 Altima dashboard has been melting and cracking for years now. The car is generally parked inside garage during work hours in day light. The deterioration has gotten to the point that glare on the windshield dangerously obstructs the view of the road, especially in sunny weather down in south Florida. The cracks are even in places where no sunlight reaches and causes my cabin to smell from melting dash My dashboard lights have also flickered on and off and gave me warning messages that went away on its own. I have taken my car to mechanic multiple times but they asked to contact manufacturer.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE MADE AN ABNORMAL NOISE AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE THEN CAUGHT FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. IT WAS NOT CONFIRMED WHETHER THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 153,405.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 5-45 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP. THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK WHILE STATIONARY OR WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ROUND ROCK NISSAN (LOCATED AT 3050 N INTERSTATE HWY 35, ROUND ROCK, TX 78681, (512) 244-8500) AND WAS INFORMED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE BESIDES REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER STATED THAT DIAGNOSTIC TESTING COULD NOT BE PERFORMED ON THE TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 33599371. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,600.
TAMARA INFLATORS- AIR BAG LIGHT IN DASH FLASHES CONTINUOUSLY
WHILE DRIVING ON HWY ** A VERY BUSY STREET THE TRANSMISSION ACTED UP. WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO 1ST GEAR AFTER PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. CAR STARTED JERKING AND LOST POWER ALMOST CAUSING A ACCIDENT. HAD TO STOP THE CAR PUT IT IN PARK TURNED IT OFF AND BACK ON AND THEN IT WAS NORMAL FOR A SHORT BIT, THE ONCE YOU HIT 50-60 MPH THE CAR BEGAN JERKING AGAIN. WE MANAGED TO GET OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO TRY TO RESTART AND TAKE OFF AGAIN .WE NEVER KNOW WHEN THIS CAN OR WILL HAPPEN. I HAVE READ SEVERAL PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THIS SAME ISSUE. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED IN A ACCIDENT OVER THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE SEVERAL OF THESE VEHICLES ON THE ROAD WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. WOULD HATE TO HEAR OF MY LOVE ONES OR YOURS HURT OR KILLED OVER THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE. THANK YOU
NISSAN ALTIMA DASHBOARD CRACKING AND LEAVING CHEMICAL SMELL. CRACKING ADVANCES IN THE SUNLIGHT/HEAT. APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH NISSAN ALTIMAS IN THE 2007-2009 RANGE.
I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR 2 1/2 YEARS NOW AND EVERY TIME I DRIVE HOME FROM LOS ANGELES MY TRANSMISSION HAS ACTED UP. I DON'T WORK, SO IT'S ONLY DRIVEN THERE OCCASIONALLY WHICH HAS HELPED IT LAST THIS LONG. NOW THE TRANNY IS OVERHEATING AND CAN'T BE DRIVEN UPHILL WITHOUT IT FAILING TO GET ME HOME WHICH IS ALMOST COMPLETELY UPHILL FOR AN HOUR. EVEN FROM BAKERSFIELD IT IS OVERHEATING NOW WHICH IT DIDN'T DO BEFORE AND THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THEIR CVT TRANSMISSIONS AND THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ON THEM WITH A CHANGE TO ATF INSTEAD. IT SAYS THERE IS A RECALL FOR MY YEAR, BUT NISSAN.COM SAYS NO..WHAT CAN I DO?
WALKED OUTSIDE TO NOTICE SOMETHING WAS LOOSE AND HANGING UNDERNEATH MY CAR. AFTER TAKING MY CAR TO THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP, THEY TOLD ME THAT MY STABILIZER (SWAY BAR) WAS BROKEN AND WOULD COST NEARLY $400 TO REPLACE. AFTER RECEIVING THE NEWS, I DECIDED TO RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT A MYRIAD OF PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE THIS ISSUE BEING TAKEN CARE OF WITHOUT HAVING TO COME OUT POCKET, CONSIDERING THAT MY DRIVING COULDN'T HAVE CAUSED THIS.
I HAD MY VEHICLE MAINTAINED AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM SINCE I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR AND WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE CVT TRANSMISSION ISSUES. OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS I TOLD THEM THAT THE VEHICLE WHINED WHEN I ACCELERATED ON THE HIGHWAY BUT THEY NEVER RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION UNDER THE 10 YR OR 120,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE TRANSMISSION JUST FAILED AT 136,000 MILES AND THE MANUFACTURER SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY.
