NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Nissan Altima. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving approximately 25–35 mph. The contact stated that the engine and battery warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was shuddering. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed her that the alternator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced and that there was no warranty coverage. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 94,000.
My vehicle headlights are very dim when driving. I have replace the bulbs and still it is very dim when driving at night. I did not receive a recall for the headlights for my vehicle and when I called the dealership, they said that I received an extension, but I don’t recall getting one. Now that my headlights are very dim when driving at night I’m very concerned for my safety and I had asked them if they would honor the recall and they told me no. because I received an extension. Not sure exactly what that means. Either way there was a recall and I would like to drive in the evening, knowing that I am safe because my headlights are working properly.
I was driving along on slightly rough pavement and the car sort of twitched in the rear end and then every few rotations of the rear wheel, the car shuddered-accompanied by a grinding noise. Then I noticed, that to continue in a straight line, the steering wheel was about 30 degrees, clockwise, to the right of center! I managed to limp on down the shoulder of the road at 10 mph and made it the mile and a half to my house. I thought a wheel bearing had failed, but when I took off the driver's side rear wheel, I discovered that the lower control arm was rotten with corrosion and rust and had collapsed. I searched online for the broken part but, fortunately, found out that Nissan had extended the manufacturer warranty due to pressure from NHTSA. I had the undriveable vehicle towed to the local Nissan dealer (Matthews) and they fixed the car- SAME DAY, NO APPOINTMENT, NO CHARGE. AND they took care of the hood latch recall at the same time. I still can't believe I have my car back, and functional, in what would be considered-in the car repair business- as the 'blink of an eye'. All's well in Vestal, NY. Thank you, NHTSA.
Rear Control Arm broke while driving on the highway. We are lucky the car did not crash and cause serious injury to myself and others.
Engine light & air bag light is on. The problem has not been confirmed. I have had the engine light fixed before and it still isn’t fixed correctly.
Right rear control arm broke while driving down the road causing the car to lose control. Appears to only have very small contact points to the bushing.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving at approximately 25 MPH, the hood opened unexpectedly. The contact steered to the side of the road where the passenger slammed the hood down to latch the hood securely. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the hood latch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure caused damage to the fenders and the hood. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.
See attached document for complaint
Vehicle has a current defected transmission that Nissan is aware off and fixed vehicles within a certain warranty period. Customers should have received letter making them aware of the defected transmission, I explained to Nissan I never received a letter. I am assuming this happened because I purchased the vehicle used, the person I spoke to from Nissan said unfortunately this happens. Nissan should be required to fix the vehicle as they failed to notify me of the defected transmission.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the hood opened abruptly and hit the windshield. The windshield cracked and the hood was damaged. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V315000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages). The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 153,126.
The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the low beam headlights were extremely dim. The contact stated that the low beam headlights were too dim to safely drive at nighttime. The contact replaced the headlight bulbs twice, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the headlight housings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to assist in replacing headlamp housings. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Passenger side rear lower control arm snapped when backing my car out of the driveway. Through inspection looks like driver side is starting to crack. There are recalls on the USA for this problem up to 2013 and in Canada for 2013 and 2014.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the hood and the trunk unintendedly opened. Additionally, the rear driver’s side window failed to roll down as needed. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that the hood latch needed to be replaced. The hood latch was replaced. The window and trunk were not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 150,000.
On 6/28/2023, without any type of advanced warning, my rear driver's side control arm on my 2015 Nissan Altima failed, almost causing me to get into a severe accident; noting the rear tire was almost completely torn from the vehicle. The steering wheel also abruptly turned and locked to the left with a complete loss of control of the vehicle. The only thing that saved me from getting into a head-on accident with another vehicle was that I was operating at a slow speed and was able to stop in time. I never received any type of notification from Nissan, prior to the incident, to advise me of the Voluntary Service Campaign P9324. Had I known this, I would have at least had Nissan pay for my vehicle being towed and repaired, instead of paying for it out of my own pocket. On 1/4/2026, my rear passenger's side control arm failed when I was backing up in a parking lot. I was not in any type of danger this time of getting into an accident, but I was still not aware of Nissan's related Service Campaign and again paid for the repair, out of pocket. Noting that both control arms had now failed on my vehicle, (at different times, which could have caused death and/or severe injury to myself and/or others), I decided to investigate the issue further and discovered for the first time the existence of the Service Campaign Notification P9324. On 1/6/2026, I contacted Nissan's Recall Support Line and reported to them, both of my vehicle's break down(s). I was then advised that Nissan had changed the Service Campaign Notification regarding the rear control arm(s), to a "warranty extension", which ended in June of 2025 and therefore, they would not be willing to reimburse me for either of the repairs. In closing, I would like to say that it is disgusting that I was never advised of this Service Campaign Notification by Nissan that could have caused my death and/or serious injury and that Nissan will not continue to stand behind the costs to repair their defective part.
A- arm on rear suspension rusted out.
My 2015 Nissan Altima head lights are too dim. It is hard to see 50 feet in front of me unless i use my high beams. I bought this vehicle brand new in May 2015, the issue started in 2017.
Please see this other report I filled out: 11526603. Thus far have paid about $1100 to get new, steering fluid, repair brakes, get a new battery, transmission fluid, and fuel injection service. They said this would fix the problem. The problem was not fixed. I took the car back again and they kept it several hours. Their higher level mechanic still couldn’t figure out a problem. Now, the car has a new weird noise. When I drove it this morning, it sounded like there was a motorcycle driving nearby, yet I couldn’t see one. Then I figured out, it was my own engine, making some extra noise. I’m going to try to get into a different mechanic tomorrow. God help me. So now two problems: steering and engine. I hope the car will make it to the mechanic.
The gas petal broke while accelerating to get on the highway. My safety was put at risk as I was unable to move out of harms way. I was shocked to find out the gas pedal was plastic. It was the original gas pedal provided by Nissan and I am the original owner.
My 2015 Nissan Altima started having some steering issues over the 2022-2023 winter. It seemed a bit stiff, but I thought it was from the snow tires I had just had placed. When it continued after change over in the spring to regular tires, I took it in and they said I had low power steering fluid. They replaced it for around $100 and it was working fine. they said there was no leak in the steering fluid, however. Since they replaced the steering fluid, (over the last month), the steering intermittently will completely go out for a few seconds the car will start pulling to the side, and I will have to crank on the wheel, and then it self resolves. I took it into Boucher Nissan in Waukesha, Wisconsin. They went over it for about an hour and they said they couldn’t find any problems. This is happened two times again over the last couple of weeks. It is also starting to sound like the engine is almost going to give out at times. I don’t know what to do because if it’s intermittent, how are they going to fix it? I could take it to another mechanic, but he may not find it either. I’m a bit scared to drive and driving slowly.

The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving approximately 60-65 MPH, the sun visor independently lowered, obstructing the contact’s view. The contact attempted to place the sun visor back in the upright position but was unable to. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who confirmed that the failure was a normal occurrence. The sun visor had not been replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the illumination from the headlights were extremely dim, creating a visibility hazard for the driver. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that the headlight assemblies was faulty and need to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. UPDATE 06/01/2023- copy of reimbursement claim ,notice of class action settlement, and quality action notice sent.
The head lights don’t illuminate properly and the headlight assembly was never changed. You are more than welcome to inspect them please do. I can’t see at all if normal lights are on only if high beam are. I have been pulled over for riding with my high beams on citing it’s a hazard but when I put my normal lights on I was also pulled over because they couldn’t tell my headlights were on. I could potentially crash or cause a crash trying to drive at night. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by an independent service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or insurance. There were no warning lamps or messages and the problem first appeared in 2023
Very dim headlights which create issues in less than ideal nighttime conditions.
The carseat tilts over when the vehicle makes a turn.
My car only has 36,400 miles. I went for an oil change at a third party garage and was told my front control arms are cracked and need to be replaced. I went to the dealer who confirmed this and also said there was a recall on the rear control arms. I have talked to numerous mechanics who said that the control arm should not be failing at 36,400 miles. I contacted Nissan asking them to help me with the cost of the front control arms since they are failing at such low mileage. They are not willing to do anything. I feel like the front should be replaced by the dealer.
Left headlight not working
The right rear lower control arm broke away from where the bushing is. It was the innermost bushing towards the center of the vehicle. It appears the metal is rather thin and rusted away. While driving, loss of control happened. With a bit of occasional snow on the road it was really bad as the car went from tar to a later of snow. The tire sat a bit sideways
This is my 3rd Altima. The first 2 were amazing. This 1 is not. I bought it used from Shift.com with 73k miles on it. About 6-8 months later I started feeling something wrong in the steering. The shop I took it too said the lower control arms were in the rear were corroded and the bushing were going bad. Tried to get it repaired thru the extended warranty I paid extra for but that was a nightmare and we ended fixing it ourselves. Something was still wrong. I put new tires on it, still wrong. Changed out the struts on front and shocks on rear, new control arms,, bushings, sway bar links, and tie rods. New brake pads and rotors. Then I bought custom wheels and another set of new tires for it. Took it and had an alignment done. The shop said everything looked good. Not long after it started drifting all over the road and I started hearing a whining noise. The next shop said the electric hydraulic power steering pump was going bad. Again the warranty company only allows the shop to call in and handle any repair claims and then they make them sit on hold forever. This is my only transportation and I can't wait for it to break in order for the warranty to repair it. In the meantime trying to figure out what to do the car is getting harder to drive straight down the road. I turned left thru an intersection and ran over the center median blowing out a tire. In 2 other occasions I hit my new wheels on the curb because the steering wheel has excessive play in it. We ended up changing the power steering unit without help from the warranty. After some research I had the lower steering shaft replaced also. The entire suspension has been replaced(front struts 2x) and it only has 115k miles on it. It's had 3 alignments in 2 years and yesterday the man at Les Schwab said the rack and pinion has some play in it. As well as the upper steering shaft needing to be replaced also. Oh and the CVT transmission is now leaking.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the air bag waring light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the mechanic stated the vehicle was experiencing the failure listed in NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V681000 (Air Bags) and advised the contact to contact the dealer. The dealer was contacted, and the dealer stated that the vehicle was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 53,680.
My low beam headlights very low ,so low seems like they aren't on,have to drive with high beams on, there was a recall in 2022, that I wasn't made aware of also the control arm front driver and passenger side is cracked and my car has never been wrecked. Brought it brand new off the Nissan dealership lot. Had issues from the start with the interior they call themselves fixing ( but did not).
Driving on Highway when all of a sudden i started fishtailing in both lanes, I was able to regain control after about 5seconds by slowing down , I was still having control issues until i got to a speed of 20-30 mph. Luckily i was only few hundred feet from my exit and got off and stopped at gas station. Looked underneath and noticed the lower control arm came off or broke off.
I bought 2015 Nissan Altima from Cars Express on 2/17/2023. He breached verabal agreement and will not fix the safety issues. I paid him for the paint job on front bumper and paid for the paint. Witnesses that he would pay then refused pay the paint men so I paid them once vehicle was in my possession front blinkers do not work headlight out. Safety sensor is cut. Air bag light came on and says air bags not on check engine light came on.. I tried to talk to him about safety concerns and I asked to return the vehicle for full payment including the paint and paint job I already paid him. The car was a salvage rebuilt and the hood of the car needed to be aligned that wasn’t done, safety concern is hood might open while I’m driving. He defrauded/scammed me. I’m stuck with an vehicle that is not safe, he does his own repairs which he told me he takes them a mechanic. He buys wrecks and chop shop fixes them. The car was inspected on 1/14/2023 by [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
My car is part of the headlight settlement from a lawsuit against Nissan. I followed the settlement guidelines and took my car to the dealer for assessment. The dealer agreed that my headlights were defective and ordered the replacement set. The low beam headlights on my car are useless at night...often I have to drive with the high beams on to see anything. They are a safety hazard and I cannot believe there are not more accidents because of them. The headlights ordered for my car have not come in at this time. It has been 10 months since they were ordered. The parts department states that Nissan has been very slow to provide the numerous sets of headlights ordered by their dealership. I could replace the headlights on my own because you can buy new oem Nissan headlights online for 600 a pair. If I can buy them new online what is Nissan's hold up sending them out? In the meantime, I am reluctant to drive my car at night for safety concerns. Nissan admitted no wrong doing in the lawsuit and appear to be in no hurry to make it right.
I changed out my sway bar links cause I keep hearing a klunk sound ( metal on metal) and noticed how rusted and brittle the rear control arms. I'm afraid to drive the car.
In 3 different occasions in this same particular order my car would start to slowly loose acceleration of only letting me drive to 10mph before lights on dash would come on such as ps,abs, traction control ect. Then my radio would shut off followed by my whole dashboard before completely the whole vehicle would completely shutdown on me and I could not start up again. I replaced the battery and put in a new alternator, but continued doing the exact same issue. I took it to a mechanic and he determined that for whatever reason the new alternator was not sending out the power and replaced it again and have to reprogram the entire computer because it was sending all kinds of codes that had nothing to do with my vehicles issue. He also noticed the continues whining sort of whistling noise coming from the powersterring as I have read in the past that people have that same problem on this particular model. As of this moment its been about 1 month and has not yet stalled on me for now, but it is very dangerous when this happens in the middle of the street or highway when your running at a certain speed and cannot control your steering since its powersterring.
MY COMPLAINT IS INVOLVING BOTH DRIVERS AND PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHTS. WHILE DRIVING FROM THE EVENING ON INTO NIGHT TIME AND WHILE HAVING MY LIGHTS ON I CAN NOT SEE THE LIGHT IN FRONT OF ME THEY ARE VERY,VERY DIM. SO I HAVE TO RESORT ON PUTTING ON MY HIGH BEAMS WHICH CAUSES ONCOMING MOTORISTS TO BE BLINDED BY MY HIGH BEAM LIGHTS WHICH CAN CAUSE THEM TO LOSE CONTROL OF THIER VEHICLE AND CRASH INTO MINE. I ALSO CAN NOT SEE IF THERE IS ANY PEDESTRIAN IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE OR A DISABLED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME UNTILL I AM WITHIN A FEW FEET FROM THEM. I CAN NOT FOR SAFETY CONCERNS DRIVE MY VEHICLE AT NIGHT.
The left back lower control arm broke into while I was driving . There is not a recall on it yet. I was traveling over a bridge with light traffic when the traction control light came on and I was hearing a lot of noise coming from the Vechile .I turned my emergency flashers on And looked around the Vechile but did not see anything . So I drove with the flashers on to my car repairman . When he lifted the Vechile up he showed me what had happened it had rusted through. I consider myself very lucky if there had been heavy traffic I would have most likely been in a crash . The part too replace it is very hard too find .
My car's low beam headlights go dim quickly, if work at all. The bright light beams work as should. At times I must drive with the bright beams on just to see safely. I understand there was a settlement by Nissan, however, my issue did not start until after the settlement was over. I am unable to get my headlights fixed due to the deadline. I might note, I purchased my car right before the deadline, so at that time, it was not having the issues. It is very disappointing that Nissan is aware of the issue, but due to timing of this issue, they will not replace the faulty part.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that there was an abnormal winding sound detected coming from the vehicle. The transmission warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.
Low beam headlights too dim to Light road. Must use high beams to see at night Nissan will not replace for free. I see there was a settlement but date has passed and I was never notified. The headlights defect is very dangerous
Headlight assemblies are so dim, even after replacing headlamp bulbs, that the vehicle is unsafe to drive at night. Nissan and dealer are unwilling to correct under the class actio Suarez vs Nissan eventhough vehicle was presented and confirmed needing repair during the time period
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated driving 35 MPH, the headlights became inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The dealer was contacted and stated that the warranty for the headlights had expired but provide no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 71,000.
I am the original owner of this 2015 Nissan Altima and I am having difficulty seeing when driving at night. The headlights are very dim. I recently (12/9/22) took my car in for service for a separate recall dealing with the hood latch. I mentioned the issue with the dim lights to them at that time and they inspected my headlights. They inspected my lights and agreed that they were dim and they informed me that the headlight assemblies needed to be replaced. They even provided me a copy of a Nissan Service Campaign (Ref PC861) dealing with halogen headlights dimming due to quality defect on the vehicle causing the delamination of the headlight assembly. However, they told me that it would not be a covered repair because the campaign had expired about 10 weeks prior to my visit. They recommended I call Nissan USA and see if they could help me. I did that and they basically told me No. I spoke to several people in the organization. I feel like this is a safety issue when driving the vehicle at night and since it is a known defect and I am the original owner I believe it should be covered. The cost of the repair is $1,300. I will attach my service department paperwork from 12/9/22 where it states the lights are bad, a copy of the Nissan Service Campaign that the dealership gave me, and a copy of a Class Action Settlement concerning this same issue for your review. I have spoken to Nissan USA several times without success so I am hoping you can help me resolve this problem. I even tried to resolve it through the Better Business Bureau but they are being told by Nissan that the car is outside the warranty. I believe a safety issue like this should be covered outside the original warranty. Thanks in advance for your help.
Nissan is aware that there is a problem with the headlights. There was a class action suit against them for this defect. They need to be made to issue a recall. It's very dangerous as the lights are incredibly dim making it difficult to see. I tried to get them repaired by Nissan but I missed the class action suit deadline by 5 days.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the hood latch inadvertently disengaged. The contact then stated that two days later she received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V315000 (Latches, Locks, Linkages). The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the hood latch was replaced; however, the failure recurred. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the latch unlatched, and the hood flew up and cracked the windshield. The dome light was knocked out of position. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The vehicle was no repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 93,336.
When driving the car the hood flew up damaging the hood, windshield, and corner of the top fenders
I recently purchased a 2015 Nissan Altima for my 17 yr old son as a first time vehicle at a local dealership. Unfortunately and unbeknownst to me, this vehicle had a class action lawsuit in which the deadline ended prior to me purchasing the vehicle for having "halogen headlamps (“Class Vehicles”) defect that causes an interior reflecting surface of the headlamp to deteriorate, resulting in dimming of the low beam headlights". This vehicle is STILL NOT recalled by the manufacturer, Nissan. It puts drivers and passengers in extremely dangerous situations on the road. We have driven this vehicle twice at night and even with the high beams, you can hardly see ahead of you. I am shocked that these vehicles have not been recalled. Because I purchased this vehicle a week ago, I had no idea of the recall and when I looked up the VIN, the deadline passed. I contacted Nissan who said they will not do anything because the deadline of the class action lawsuit passed. I contacted the attorneys for the class action lawsuit who also stated nothing could be done because the deadline passed. So here we are with my son's first vehicle, now having to dish out more money to get this manufacture defect repaired because the manufacturer refuses to accept responsibility and recall these vehicles to repair this issue.
Purchased a used 2015 Nissan Altima 2.5S and discovered that low-beam headlights are very dim. We almost hit a deer due to low visibility. Internet search reveals this is a known problem. We are too late to benefit from the class action lawsuit. A safety recall should be issued.
