This page combines three types of NHTSA data: recall campaigns (official manufacturer or government actions), owner complaints (unverified consumer reports), and crash test ratings (where available). A vehicle with many complaints is not necessarily less reliable — complaint volume correlates with sales volume and vehicle age. Recalls indicate identified defects, not overall quality. To compare this model year with others, use the year navigation in the sidebar or return to the model overview page.
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2012 through 2014 Frontier vehicles manufactured from November 28, 2012, through December 17, 2013. In the affected vehicles, a circuit breaker may have been installed incorrectly causing the main wire harness connected to the circuit breaker to face outward, potentially contacting a metal bolt located on the A-pillar.
Remedy Status
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the circuit breaker orientation. If the circuit breaker orientation is incorrect, dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The recall began on March 17, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014 Frontier Crew Cab vehicles manufactured June 11, 2014 to June 26, 2014. The affected vehicles were manufactured with an out of specification anchor nut installed on the weld nut plate where the rear seat belt anchor is attached. The seat belt anchor bolt may not be attached as designed.
Remedy Status
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt anchor attachment and repair it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the air bag warning light illuminated. The air bag light warning light illuminated and remained constantly illuminated since the day of the failure. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired because it was not under recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Horn did not work and Airbag light keeps flashing
Side Air bags deployed while crossing a railroad crossing.
The Air Bag Clock Spring Spiral Cable failed on 6-29-2022. Nissan replaced the component 6-30-2022 at a cost to me of 852.72. I spoke with several service technicians at this dealership and I quote... yep, this happens all the time with these clock springs. I called Nissan consumer affairs. My case number was 46685014. They said since this is covered under the 5 year 60 K miles that they would not cover the cost. My 2014 truck has 66K. I said to them I felt that this is a safety issue and there should not be a time or mileage limit attached to a safety issue since the airbags will not deploy and that this problem is occurring often, according to Nissan's own service technicians. Also, from one of Nissan's website "How often do Air Bag Clocksprings need replacement? The airbag clock spring is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. I feel this should be investigated by your agency.
The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start as needed. The traction control and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V052000 (Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The mechanic informed the contact that the integrated computer module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the independent mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was a Voluntary Service Campaign for the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 57,400.
Non functioning passenger side airbag requiring replacement of passenger side seat and airbag. Diagnosis made at Authorized Nissan dealer, Eugene Oregon
THE HOOD LATCH FAILED WHEN WE WERE DRIVING 65 MPH ON A HIGHWAY, CAUSING THE HOOD TO OPEN, BLOCK OUR VIEW AND SMASH OUR WINDSHIELD. THE HOOD WAS BENT, THE ROOF WAS DENTED AND THE INSIDE REARVIEW MIRROR AND OVERHEAD LIGHT CAME OFF.
FROM A STAND STILL, WHEN ACCELERATING TO ENTER INTO TRAFFIC. DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, THE TRUCK ONLY MOVES INTO TRAFFIC BUT THEN THE TRUCK FAILS TO ACCELERATE. THERE IS A FLAT SPOT. NO ACCELERATION AT TIMES. I HAVE TO "PEDAL" THE ACCELERATOR TO TRY TO GET THE TRUCK TO MOVE. MEANWHILE I AM STUCK WITH TRAFFIC RAPIDLY APPROACHING BECAUSE I CANNOT GET OUT OF THE WAY. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY AND ALWAYS AT THE WORST TIME LIKE WHEN TRYING TO ENTER ONTO A HIGHWAY. I HAVE HAD NEAR COLLISIONS TWICE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. NISSAN DEALER HAS FOUND NOTHING. THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM WHEN I TAKE IT TO THEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2014 NISSAN FRONTIER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE FRONT DRIVER STEERING WHEEL, FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT AIR BAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT IMPACT. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACTS VIEW OF THE ROAD WAS OBSTRUCTED AND WAS HEADED TOWARDS A SIDE WALK HOWEVER WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP TO AVOID A CRASH. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A LOWER ARM INJURY AND BURN BUT NO MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS RECEIVED. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER TO BE SERVICED UNDER AN AIR BAG RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LOCAL DEALER TEDDY NISSAN LOCATED AT 3660 BOSTON RD, THE BRONX, NY 10469 WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SYSTEM IN THE AIR BAG AND SEAT BELTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BUT CONFIRMED THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO COSTS. THE MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE, AND A CASE WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 139,900.
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GIVING VEHICLE PARASITIC DRAW BETWEEN TSB AND COMBINATION METER! INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STAYS ON WHEN KEYS OUT OF VEHICLE AND DASH INDICATORS FLICKER DUE TO FAULTY COMBINATION METER. A RECALL SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AND THE PROPER PROCEDURES SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF FOR THE MANUFACTURE RECALL.
AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON WHEN IGNITION TURNED ON AND REMAINS BLINKING/FLASHING UNTIL IGNITION TURNED OFF. REMAINS ON WHETHER STANDING STILL OR IN MOTION AT ANY SPEED
TL* THE CONTACT'S WIFE OWNS A 2014 NISSAN FRONTIER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A BURNING ODOR IN THE VEHICLE AND THAT THE REAR TAIL LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHOM DETERMINED THAT THE MAIN WIRE HARNESS WAS DEFECTIVE. THE TAIL LIGHTS WERE REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE STILL OCCURRED BECAUSE THE HARNESS WAS NOT REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA AS THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000.
FRONTAL COLLISION (REAR END STYLE) AT APPROXIMATELY 50-60 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.
MY SUN ROOF SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODED. HEARD A LID POP LOOKED UP AND THE ENTIRE WINDOW WAS SHATTERED. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY.
I HEARD A LOAD POP SIMILAR TO A GUN SHOT. MY SUN ROOF HAD JUST SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODED. IT BUCKLED IN THE MIDDLE AND THE WHOLE ROOF WAS SHATTERED.
PURCHASED VEHICLE USED, WITH 28,000 MILES. GAS SPURTS OUT OF FILLER NECK 90% OF THE TIME WHEN USING AUTOMATIC NOZZLE AS TANK NEARS 3/4 FULL; MUST FINISH FILLING AT VERY SLOW RATE MANUALLY. 10% OF THE TIME GAS SPURTS OUT FILLER NECK AS SOON AS FILLING BEGINS, UNLESS A ONE MINUTE WAIT IS OBSERVED BETWEEN STOPPING AND BEGINNING TO FILL TANK.
WHEN REFUELING VEHICLE FUEL SPLASHES OUT OF RESEPTICAL AFTER 10 SECONDS OF FUELING. THE AUTO SHUTOFF ON THE FUEL PUMP ACTIVATES AND REFUELING STOPS BUT NOT AFTER FUEL SPLASHES OUT ON THE PERSON REFUELING THE VEHICLE AND CREATING A HAZMAT EVENT AT THE FUEL PUMPS. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AT EVERY FILLUP BUT IF IT HAPPENS AT BUT IF IT DOES IT AT A PUMP IT WILL CONTINUE SPLASHING AT THAT PUMP EVERY TIME I TRY TO GET FUEL..
STEERING. ERRATIC STEERING WAS EXPERIENCED WHEN DRIVING. UPON INSPECTION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE SHAFT FROM THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE INPUT SHAFT ON THE STEERING BOX WAS NOT CONNECTED PROPERLY. THIS CREATED MOVEMENT IN THE CONNECTION WHICH WORE OFF THE SPLINES. THIS RESULTED IN ERRATIC STEERING AND STEERING FAILURE THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A FATAL ACCIDENT. THE NISSAN REP DID NOT SEEM CONCERNED WHEN I CALLED TO ALERT THEN.
EVERY TIME I NEED TO FILL MY TRUCK UP, I NEVER LET IT GET BELOW A QUARTER OF A TANK, FUEL WILL COME SHOOTING BACK OUT AS IF IT IS FULL, BUT IT IS NOT. MY TRUCK WAS OFF, AND THE KEY NOT IN THE IGNITION. THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERY SINCE MY GETTING THIS TRUCK, 1/19/20190 TO CURRENT. I HAVE TO FUEL SLOW IN ORDER TO GET GAS A FULL TANK, LIKE THERE IS A KINK IN THE SYSTEM.
TAKATA RECALL. WHEN IN A "FRONT END COLLISION" AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED (EST. 70-80 MPH), AT IMPACT, NO AIR BAGS WERE DEPLOYED AND RESULTED IN HITTING MY HEAD EITHER AGAINST THE STEERING WHEEL OR THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW (I AM UNSURE, AS I LOST CONSCIOUSNESS FOR SECONDS AFTER THE COLLISION). THIS COLLISION OCCURRED, MOST RECENTLY, ON 08/28/18. I WAS ALSO INVOLVED IN A "FRONT END COLLISION" WITH A SEMI-TRUCK/18-WHEELER IN FEBRUARY OF 2018. THIS WAS ALSO AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED BUT THE IMPACT WAS TO THE PASSENGER SIDE, PREDOMINANTLY. ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T HAVE A PASSENGER, I STILL WAS HIT HARD ENOUGH THAT THE IMPACT JOLTED MY HEAD TO, ONCE AGAIN, HIT MY STEERING WHEEL AND RESULTING IN BEING TRANSPORTED TO THE ER VIA LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT. BOTH OF THESE ACCIDENTS OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY AND IN MOTION.
