I HAVE A MODEL YEAR 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. I ALSO OWNED A 1990 NISSAN MAXIMA AND A 1998 NISSAN MAXIMA ALL WITH THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. THE RADIATOR SUPPORT RUSTS OUT COMPLETELY AND ITS NOT DUE TO RADIATOR FAILURE OR ACCIDENT DAMAGE. THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THESE CARS NEED TO BE BETTER PROTECTED FROM THE WEATHER OR BETTER QUALITY PARTS NEED TO BE USED. BUT SPECIFICALLY THE RADIATOR SUPPORT SYSTEMS IN THESE MAXIMAS ARE OF VERY POOR QUALITY. FAILURE OF THESE PARTS WOULD RESULT IN THE ENGINE AND OR TRANSMISSION FALLING OUT OF THE VEHICLE WHICH IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA GLE/GXE/SE WITH COOPER TIRES, SIZE P215/55R16, LINE COBRA RADIAL G/T, DOT 3DB2, SERIAL D113206 RRT. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH, THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT DUE TO TREAD SEPARATION. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT AND REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE SPARE. AS A RESULT OF THE BLOW OUT, THE DRIVERS SIDE FENDER, WIRING HARNESS, DOOR AND BUMPER WERE DAMAGED. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 117,368.
THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT (TIE BAR) HAS RUSTED OUT TO THE POINT THAT IT IS AFFECTING THE ALIGNMENT OF THE VEHICLE. THE RUST IS CONCENTRATED AROUND THE PLACE WHERE THE LOWER ENGINE SUPPORT BOLTS TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR. IT IS ENTIRELY CONCEIVABLE THAT THE ENGINE COULD CAUSE THE LOWER ENGINE SUPPORT TO BREAK FREE FROM THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT. ADDITIONALLY, THE EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE CRASH PERFORMANCE ON THIS PART OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
ON APRIL 1, 2010, MY DAUGHTER WAS WAITING IN MY VEHICLE FOR ME TO LEAVE WORK, AS I APPROACHED THE CAR I NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE HOOD, MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR, WHEN SAW ME APPROACHING THE CAR SHE EXITED THE CAR AND STOOD IN FRONT OF THE CAR TO OPEN HOOD OF CAR, ONE OF MY COWORKERS YELLED THE CAR WAS ON FIRE POINTING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. I NOTICED FLAMES COMING OUT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR, I YELLED FOR MY DAUGHTER TO STAY CLEAR FROM THE CAR, I PHONED 911 IMMEDIATELY, MY CAR WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF A CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, I WORK IN A MEDICAL CAMPUS, I WAS CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PATIENTS AND SURROUNDINGS NEEDLESS TO SAY MY DAUGHTER COULD OF BEEN SERIOUSLY HURT OR WORSE. THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES IN LESS THEN 5 MINUTES, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND SECURITY FILED REPORTS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND OR COMPREHEND HOW THIS CAN HAPPEN, I KEEP THE CAR UP TO DATE WITH OIL CHANGES AND MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC CHECKS THE CAR EVERY SIX MONTHS FOR SERVICE, NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE NO TRANSPORTATION SINCE MY NISSAN WAS THE ONLY CAR I HAD WHICH I USED FOR WORK AND MY DAUGHTER FOR WORK AND SCHOOL ALSO. *TR
WE WERE DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT AND HAD ABOUT 5 FEET TO GO BEFORE THE CAR WAS PARKED. I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE CAR SLOWED DOWN FURTHER. SUDDENLY THE CAR ENGINE REVVED AND THE CAR TOOK OFF. I PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, NOT THE GAS PEDAL, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T STOP. I TURNED THE WHEEL TO AVOID HITTING THE BUILDING IN FRONT OF ME, BUT HIT THE ADJACENT RESTAURANT INSTEAD. THE CAR CRASHED INTO THE RESTAURANT WALL AND SENT A LARGE REFRIGERATOR CRASHING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. FORTUNATELY, NO RESTAURANT PERSONNEL WERE IN THE PATH OF THE REFRIGERATOR AT THE TIME. SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE RESTAURANT AND TO THE CAR. MY HUSBAND WHO HAD ALREADY TAKEN OFF HIS SEAT BELT, AS WE WERE NEARLY STOPPED, HIT THE WINDSHIELD WITH HIS HEAD. HE IS IN THE HOSPITAL. I BADLY BRUISED MY HAND AND CHEST. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AT ALL. OUR CAR IS A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. IT WAS TOWED TO A NEARBY BODY SHOP. NO ONE HAS TOUCHED IT OR ATTEMPTED ANY REPAIRS. I EXPECT THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL DETERMINE THE CAR HAS BEEN TOTALED. *TR
2000 NISSAN MAXIMA'S HAVE A SERIOUS ENGINE IGNITION COIL DEFECT. -- THIS DEFECT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO RUN ROUGH, STALL AND ABRUPTLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY STOP DURING NORMAL USE. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS LITTLE (IF ANY) VALUE IN HELPING ALERT THE DRIVER TO THE SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE. THE ENGINE HAS 6 SEPARATE COILS. THE FIRST COIL FAILED AND WAS REPLACED BY THE NISSAN DEALER. IT WAS NOT COVERED BY ANY TYPE OF NISSAN WARRANTY. WITHIN A 90 DAY PERIOD, TWO ADDITIONAL COILS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. EVENTUALLY, ALL 6 IGNITION COILS ULTIMATELY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $900.00. THE DEALER STATED THIS WAS A "VERY COMMON PROBLEM" WITH THIS MODEL, AND SAID EVENTUALLY ALL OF THE COILS FAIL WITH THIS NISSAN YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. HE PROVIDE THE FAILURE CODE P1320 AND NISSAN SERVICE REFERENCE: NTB01-059. THE WORK WAS PERFORMED BY A NISSAN DEALER IN ARIZONA. THIS MANUFACTURES DEFECT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BY NHTSA AND NISSAN NEEDS TO SERVICE THESE UNITS BEFORE IT RESULTS IN ADDITIONAL ACCIDENTS, FIRE OR FATALITIES. *TR
2000 NISSAN MAXIMA WITH CORRODED MOUNT FOR ENGINE CENTER MOUNT THAT IS ALLOWING ENGINE TO DISLODGE FROM CAR'S CHASSIS. FAILED ANNUAL INSPECTION. *TR
CAR RAN ROUGH AND STALLED, TOOK IT TO SHOP AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE COILS AT A COST OF ALMOST $1,000. THIS HAPPENED AT 65,000 MILES. LOOKING ON THIS SITE THERE ARE 115 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. MY QUESTION IS HOW MANY PEOPLE NEED TO REPORT A POTENTIAL DANGEROUS PROBLEM BEFORE IT GETS A RECALL? *TR
SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK TO PRECISION TUNE WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO BE THE 6 COILS WHICH NEEDED TO ALL BE REPLACED PER A NISSAN TECH REPORT STATING THEY WERE DEFECTIVE. $1300.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *TR GP
I WAS INVOLVED IN A 50MPH COLLISION WITH DAMAGE TO THE FRONT AND DRIVERS SIDE. FRONTAL AIRBAGS AND SIDE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY RESULTING IN CHEST INJURIES, UPPER TORSO INJURIES, AND NECK INJURIES. SEATBELTS ALSO FAILED TO LOCK. HAVE NOT HEARD BACK ABOUT WHY THE FAILURE OCCURRED. *TR
SINCE I OWNED THIS CAR I HAVE MULTIPLE ISSUES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND I WAS TOLD THE CODE WAS INDICATING THE COILS WERE BAD. ALSO, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SLIP AND TCS LIGHT COME ON. THE VEHICLE SHAKES AND LOSES POWER. ON TOP THAT I CAN'T GET THE CAR TO PASS INSPECTION. MY RADIO ALSO HAS A ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, IT WENT DARK. I FEEL WE SHOULD ALL FILE A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT. *TR
AFTER DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS FOR 20 MINUTES, GOT OFF HIGHWAY AND PULLED INTO GAS STATION. AFTER PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK, THE CAR SHUT OFF. AFTER COMING OUT OF THE STORE, IT FAILED TO START. WENT BACK TO THE CAR LATER, AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. TOOK TO MECHANIC, BLAMED THE SERVICE LIGHT ON THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM. CAME ON AGAIN 2-3 WEEKS LATER, TOOK TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WAS THE IGNITION COILS. QUOTED ME $1300 TO REPLACE ALL 6. OPTED NOT TO PERFORM REPAIR AT THAT TIME. 2 WEEKS LATER, THE COIL FAILED AND CAUSED THE CAR TO RUN VERY ROUGH, AS WELL AS CONSUME LARGE AMOUNTS OF GAS. REPLACED BROKEN COIL AND O2 SENSOR. CAR CONTINUES TO GET FAR BELOW AVERAGE MPG. ABOUT 15 MPG HIGHWAY DRIVING. *TR
MY MAXIMA JUMPS OR SLIPS OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING. I WAS JUST DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR SLIPPED INTO NEUTRAL. IT WOULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE (PRESSING THE GAS JUST CAUSED THE ENGINE TO REV). I HAD MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND IT WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO THE BREAKDOWN WITHOUT BEING HIT. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO MY REPAIR SHOP AND THEY "THINK" IT'S THE TRANSMISSION, BUT NOT SURE. IT HAS OCCURRED TWICE SINCE THEN. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT APPARENTLY IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH NISSANS 2000 AND LATER. *TR
IGNITION COIL FAILS CAUSING MISFIRE IN ENGINE. HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. PART IS DEFECTIVE AND CAUSES CAR TO RUN VERY ROUGH. THERE IS AN ONLINE PETITION FOR THE 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. IT COST UP TO $600 TO FIX. *TR
AWARENESS NEEDS TO BE MADE ON THE 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA, THE CAR WILL HAVE A ECU BREAKDOWN RESULTING IN THE CAR TO SHUT OFF AT ANY GIVEN TIME. A TROUBLE CODE OF P0505 WILL TRIGGER OFF IN THE CAR RESULTING IN AN INSANE REPAIR COST. NUMEROUS CARS ARE AFFECTED AND NISSAN REFUSES TO PERFORM A RECALL ON THIS CAR. ITS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE ONE OF THESE NISSANS SHUTS DOWN AT THE WRONG TIME RESULTING IN SOMEONE'S DEATH. THERE ARE PAGES UPON PAGES OF POSTS WITH THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE IGNITION COILS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE AND WAS INFORMED THAT MANY OTHER NISSAN OWNER'S WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE FOR THAT YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL. NISSAN WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE REPAIRS HAD BEEN MADE BY A LOCAL MECHANIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 39,131 AND CURRENT MILEAGE IS 39,400. UPDATED 6/2/08 *CN UPDATED 06/02/08

ON MARCH 5, 2008, THE IDLE AIR CONTROL WENT OUT ON THIS VEHICLE. THE PART WAS REPLACED WITH A GENUINE PART FROM NISSAN. WITHIN 30 DAYS OF REPLACING THE PART, THE ELECTRONIC MOTOR MOUNT WIRING SHORTED OUT, WHICH CAUSED THE NEW PART TO BURN, AS WELL AS THE COMPUTER. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP, IN WHICH THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND FAILED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL OTHER CUSTOMERS AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE ABOUT IT. EVERYTIME THIS PART BURNS OUT, IT WILL COST $2000.00 DOLLARS TO REPLACE THE PART AND YOU WILL STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. I FEEL THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IS CONCEALING A PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND SOME RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM COULD HAVE BEEN FOUND. THE CONSUMERS ARE BEING DECEIVED BY NOT BEING INFORMED OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE THEY PURCHASE THE 2000 SERIES OF NISSAN MAXIMA. *TR
REGARDING CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS LAW- ALL 6 IGNITION COILS REPLACED AT 51,000 AND AIR FLOW METER ALSO HAVING TO BE REPLACED. CAR WOULD NOT RUN AND KEPT DYING UNTIL NISSAN REPLACED PARTS. *TR
MY 2000 MAXIMA HAS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. NORMALLY, THE CARS RUNS FINE BUT APPROXIMATELY 10 TIMES OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS IN EXTREMELY HUMID CONDITIONS AND WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS AROUND 50 DEGREES (F), THE IDLE GETS EXTREMELY ROUGH. I HAD THE FAULT CODES READ AND THEY WERE P1320 (THREE TIMES) AND P0420 (ONCE). AFTER BEING READ, THE CODES WERE RESET, BUT IMMEDIATELY RETURNED. THIS DEFECT HAS EXISTED ON AND OFF FOR OVER TWO YEARS AND HAS BEEN RESET SEVERAL DURING THIS TIME. WHEN RESET THE LAST TIME, THE WEATHER WAS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE CAR HAS 36K MILES AND IS DRIVEN AROUND 4K MILES PER YEAR. MY INVESTIGATION INDICATED DEFECTIVE COILS, WHICH ARE KNOWN PROBLEMS TO NISSAN AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED A LONG TIME AGO. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED DUE TO CONSUMER REPORTS GREAT RATINGS BUT BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECT I CAN SAFELY SAY THAT I WOULD NEVER PURCHASE A NISSAN AUTOMOBILE AGAIN. ASKING CONSUMERS TO PAY OVER $1000 TO REPAIR A VEHICLE BUILT WITH DEFECTIVE PARTS IS ALMOST CRIMINAL. NISSAN SHOULD OWN UP TO ITS RESPONSIBILITY AND RECALL THE KNOWN DEFECTIVE PARTS THUS RESTORING CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND VEHICLE RELIABILITY. *TR

SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON. TOOK TO SERVICE SHOP WHERE COMPUTER DIAGNOSED IGNITION COIL FAILURE. NO WAY TO DETERMINE WHICH COIL IS BAD. TOLD TO REPLACE ALL THE COILS AT COST OF $1300. WENT TO INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH MY MAKE AND MODEL CAR. *TR
LONG DRIVES IN HOT WEATHER (ABOVE 85 DEGREES) CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO FAIL. IT USUALLY OCCURS 45 MINUTES INTO A STEADY DRIVE OF 60 TO 75 MPH OR HEAVY STOP AND START DRIVING. PULLING OVER AND WAITING 10 TO 15 MINUTES WILL CURE THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER IT WILL OCCUR AGAIN IF THE SAME TYPE OF DRIVING CONTINUES. WHEN THE WEATHER IS COOL OUT FALL THROUGH SPRING, THE PROBLEM RARELY OCCURS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS THE INTERNAL SEALS OF THE TRANSMISSION. WHEN THEY GET TOO HOT THEY EXPAND AND ALLOW FLUID TO "BLOW BY" WHICH DECREASES PRESSURE IN THE VALVE BODY CAUSES THE TRANSMISSION TO DISENGAGE. I HAVE FLUSHED THE TRANSMISSION EVERY 30,000 MILES AT THE DEALER SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. THIS IS NOT A ONE OFF PROBLEM. I HAVE TWO 2000 MAXIMA'S, BOTH WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE IS ALSO A CO-WORKER OF MINE WITH A 2001 MAXIMA WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY THERE ARE INTERNAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION. I DO NOT EXPECT NISSAN TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, HOWEVER THEY MUST KNOW THEY ARE LOSING CUSTOMERS. THIS COMES ON TOP OF THE IGNITION COIL PROBLEM I HAD WITH BOTH VEHICLES, WHICH OF COURSE NISSAN REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLS AND SHUTS OFF. THE VEHICLE WILL RESTART AFTER APPROXIMATELY 4-5 ATTEMPTS. THE DEALER REPLACED THE MASS AIR-FLOW SENSOR APPROXIMATELY TWO YEARS AGO AND RECHARGED THE ECM. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 90,354.
MY MAXIMA STARTED SPUTTERING AND ACTED AS IF IT WAS GOING TO DIE. THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. AT ABOUT 3500RPM THE CAR BRICK WALLED AND DECELERATED. FIRST I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO BLEW OUT ALL MY HOSES. THAT WORKED FOR A COUPLE MONTHS. THEN THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND WAS ACTING UP AGAIN. REPLACED THE 2 FRONT OXYGEN SENSORS. WORKED FOR ABOUT A WEEK. WENT BACK TO THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER. RAN GOOD FOR A FEW WEEKS AND STARTED ACTING UP AGAIN. TOOK IT BACK TO MECHANIC AND HAD TO HAVE THE FIRST OF 6 IGNITION COILS REPLACED. RUNNING FINE, OCCASIONALLY SPUTTERS, BUT MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WON'T GO AWAY. TOOK IT TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE DEPT. SAID THAT THE 2000 MODEL DOES NOT HAVE AN ECM SOFTWARE UPDATE! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND MADE A GRUMBLING NOISE WHEN STARTED. IN ADDITION, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THREE OF THE IGNITION COILS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER REFUSED TO MAKE THE REPAIRS UNLESS THEY WERE PAID FOR BY THE CONTACT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

ENGINE COILS AND OXYGEN SENSORS HAVE BEEN NEEDED TO BE BE REPLACED ON MANY OCCASIONS SINCE I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. WHEN 2 OF THE COILS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THE ENGINE RAN EXTREMELY ROUGH (FROM BOTH MISFIRES) CAUSING A HUGE REDUCTION IN ENGINE SPEED AND THE INABILITY TO PASS OR ACCELERATE SAFELY ONTO THE HIGHWAY. THIS HAPPENED SO ABRUPTLY ON ONE OCCASION, THAT I WAS NEARLY RUN OFF THE ROAD. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER (PURCHASED AUG 1999) AND HAVE HAD TO REPLACE 4 OF THE 6 ENGINE COILS AND ALL 4 OF MY OXYGEN SENSORS (EACH ON DIFFERENT DATES). I ONLY HAVE 116K MILES ON THE VEHICLE. *TR
I DRIVE A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA THAT CURRENTLY HAS 48000 MILES ON IT. I DEVELOPED AN ENGINE PING AT 45000 MILES AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR SEVICE. THEY REPLACED ALL 6 COIL PACKS AND AIR SOMETHING OR OTHER AT A COST OF $1300.00. I HAVE DRIVEN IT 5000 MORE MILES AND I ONCE AGAIN HAVE AN ENGINE PING. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER A SECOND TIME TO WHICH THEY TOLD ME I WAS A QUART LOW ON OIL AND THAT WOULD CAUSE A PING. THEY DID AN OIL & FILTER CHANGE. I WAS PLEASED AS I DROVE AWAY AND HEARD NO ENGINE PING, HOWEVER ABOUT 30 MILES LATER IT CAME BACK. THEIR THEORY OF BEING 1 QUART LOW ON OIL IS NOT CORRECT. I DECIDED TO RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM ON THE NET, AND SEE THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH NISSAN'S. THIS IS NOT A CHEAP FIX AND I THINK NISSAN SHOULD HAVE TO RECALL THIS AS IT SHOULD NOT BE A CONSUMER FIX.

THEN OXYGEN SENSOR, DEALER SAID" YOU DON'T COME HERE FOR OIL CHANGES SO YOU ARE NOT A LOYAL CUSTOMER" AND CHARGED OVER $1,100 NO HELP AT ALL CONSIDERING HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. I HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED SAID THEY COULD NOT TELL WHICH COIL IS BAD SO ALL 6 HAS TO BE REPLACED. ENGINE RUNS ROUGH DURING COLD WEATHER (<50 DEGREES) AND TRIPS THE CODE FOR ENGINE MISFIRE. THE CODE DOES NOT ALWAYS TELL WHICH CYLINDER HAS THE MISFIRE. WITH ONLY 50,000 MILES ON MY MAXIMA, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER BRINGING IT TO NAPPOLI NISSAN IN MILFORD, I WAS TOLD THAT THE SEVERAL OF THE COILS WERE BAD AND THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING ALL SIX ($1191.82). AFTER LOOKING ON LINE I FOUND THAT NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WERE POSTED. I CALL NISSAN AND THEY TOLD ME BECAUSE THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THE WARRANTY WAS UP AT 36000 MILES THEY COULD NOT HELP. NISSAN HAS CHANGE THE PART , OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE OF A DESIGN FLAW AND I FEEL THEY SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR THE REPAIR! *JB

I AM A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA OWNER AND HAVE HAD THE IGNITION COILS MISFIRE THAT THE DEALER WANTS TO $850 TO REPLACE. I FEEL THAT THIS REPAIR SHOULD BE COVERED BY NISSAN IN THE FORM OF A MANUFACTURERS RECALL DUE TO THE FACT THAT MANY OTHER MAXIMA OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS AND THAT THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT THE ORIGINAL IGNITION COILS ARE DEFECTIVE. 1) THIS ISSUE IS VERY COMMON WITH MAXIMAS AND THEY PERFORM MANY IGNITION COIL REPAIR/REPLACEMENTS. 2) I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET SERVICE ADVISORS SUGGESTING TO REPLACE ALL THE COILS EVEN IF ONLY ONE OF THEM IS MALFUNCTIONING BECAUSE THEY SAY, "THE COILS ARE DEFECTIVE AND WILL ALL FAIL EVENTUALLY". 3)THERE IS A RECALL PETITION ON THE INTERNET WITH ABOUT 2200+ PEOPLE ALL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM I UNDERSTAND THAT NISSAN HAS SINCE ISSUED A NEW PART AND PART NUMBER FOR ALL IGNITION COIL REPLACEMENTS, WHICH SUGGESTS THAT THE ORIGINAL COILS ARE, IN FACT, DEFECTIVE. ONE WEEK LATER, THE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS REPLACED. FIVE MONTHS LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CATALYST NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED BECAUSE THE EXPENSE EXCEEDS $1,200. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 88,000.

2000 MAXIMA 55000 MILES, SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK TO DEALER WAS TOLD IT NEEDED AN IGNITION COIL. THEY SAID THEY CANT DETERMINE WHICH COIL IS BAD, SO ALL SIX MUST BE REPLACED. TOTAL COST. $850.58 . I WORK FOR A FORD DEALERSHIP, WE REPLACE ONLY DEFECTIVE COILS, THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER TELLS THE MECHANIC WHICH COIL IS CAUSING THE CODE. THERE IS AN ONLINE PETITION AGAINST NISSAN FOR THE COIL PROBLEM, SO FAR 2642 PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED. CANT THIS BE MADE A RECALL AND THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SWINDLED TO PAY GET THE MONEY REIMBURSED. FORD HAS DONE IT BEFORE. A FEW YEARS AGO THE DISTRIBUTOR MODULES WERE A BIG PROBLEM, LOTS OF PEOPLE WERE PAID BACK FOR MONEY SPENT. HOPEFULLY SOMETHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS. *JB

AT 45K MILES, I HAD TO REPLACE ALL SIX IGNITION COILS IN MY 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE A SINGLE COIL APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS WHILE THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THE CAR WAS IDLING ROUGH THIS TIME. *JB

HE REPLACED THE O2 SENSORS TWICE IN ONE YEAR AND ALSO REPLACED SIX OF THE COILS SPRINGS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED. AFTER EACH REPLACEMENT, THE ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE FOR THREE WEEKS. THE COIL SPRINGS WERE JUST REPLACED THREE WEEKS AGO AND NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED AGAIN. SPEED WAS NOT A FACTOR. HE NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT HE HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED AGAIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE IS NOT TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 88,000.
VEHICLE STARTED RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND HAD ENG KNOCK. BROUGHT INTO A SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS INFORMED THAT #2 IGNITION COIL HAD GONE BAD. THE CAR WAS A DANGER TO MYSELF AND OTHER DRIVERS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WOULD STALL AND WAS VERY SLUGGISH. I RECOMMEND THAT NISSIAN RECALL THIS PART DUE TO THE DANGEROUS NATURE. AFTER LOOKING UP THE PROBLEM ON DIFFERENT FORUMS THERE ARE MANY MANY OTHERS WITH THIS EXACT PROBLEM. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE BAD IGNITION COIL BUT IT SEEMS TO BE ONLY TEMPORARY AS MANY OTHERS CAN CONTEST THAT ONE BY ONE ALL THE IGNITION COILS WILL KEEP GOING BAD. *TR
IGNITION COILS FAILED CAUSING SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. CODE WAS RESET AFTER THE FIRST TIME, AND ON 10-23-06 IT RETURNED AGAIN WITH A CODE OF P1320. ENGINE HAD MISFIRED BETWEEN 10-02-06 AND 10-23-06 AND HAD EXHIBITED EXTENDED CRANKING TIME FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH BEFORE. STARTER AND BATTERY WERE REPLACED BEFORE INCIDENT. REPLACEMENT OF STARTER AND BATTER WAS LIKELY UNNECESSARY BECAUSE PROBLEM WAS LIKELY THE IGNITION COILS. CAR ALSO EXHIBITED LOSS OF POWER. *NM
