FOR MANY YEARS*, THE EXHAUST FROM MY NISSAN VERSA HAS MADE ME SICK (NAUSEOUS AND HEADACHES) SIMILAR TO HOW VW EXHAUST WOULD MAKE ME SICK. I AM CONCERNED THAT NISSAN VEHICLES MAY BE CHEATING ON INSPECTIONS CHECKS LIKE VW WAS DOING. EXHAUST FROM MANY OTHER VEHICLES MAY SMELL, BUT THIS PARTICULAR EXHAUST IS SICKENING. OUR VEHICLE PASSES EMISSION STANDARDS FOR MD EACH YEAR AND WE ALWAYS KEEP IT WELL MAINTAINED. SO AGAIN, I AM CONCERNED THEY HAVE SOFTWARE THAT WORKS TO FOOL EMISSIONS TESTING BY CHANGING THE EXHAUST ALLOWED WHEN HOOKED UP TO AN EMISSIONS TESTING COMPUTER. FOR A POINT OF REFERENCE, MY PARENTS OWN A 23 YEAR OLD FORD EXPLORER (ALSO WELL MAINTAINED) WHOSE EXHAUST DOES NOT CAUSE ME SICKNESS. EXHAUST BECAME VERY LOUD, RATTLING, ETC. VERIFIED THAT THE FLANGE ON THE MUFFLER HAD RUSTED OFF AT THE WELDS. MUFFLER HANGERS HELD THE MUFFLER IN PLACE. NOT ABLE TO COMMENT AS TO WHETHER OR NOT ANY DRIVERS OR PASSENGERS SUFFERED FROM C02 RELATED HEALTH OR BREATHING ISSUES.
ENGINE COMPLETELY STALLED FOUR SEPARATE TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WITHOUT WARNING, TOTALLY LOST POWER AND HAD TO COAST TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. AT FIRST, ENGINE WOULD RESTART, COUGH AND SPUTTER, THEN DIE. AFTER ABOUT TEN MINUTES, HOWEVER, IT RESTARTED LIKE NORMAL AND IT WAS LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. DROVE FINE FOR MONTHS UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN. THIS STARTED OCCURRING WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 85,000 MILES. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AFTER LAST INCIDENT (ABOUT 95,000 MILES) AND THEY SAID THEY RAN COMPLETE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, BUT COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. ADVISED ME TO HAVE VEHICLE BROUGHT IN NEXT TIME IT STALLS (BUT THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE TRANSITORY). I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY AND CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY I DIDN'T GET REAR-ENDED.
THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME OF A BROKEN MID PIPE ON THE MUFFLER. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE WERE TOLD THAT IT IS RELATED TO SALT ON THE ROADS. THE ISSUE APPEARS TO BE PERSISTENT ACROSS NISSAN VERSAS IN THE LATE 2000 MODELS (ESPECIALLY 2009). THERE IS A LOUD ROARING NOISE FROM THE MUFFLER AND A STRONG GASEOUS SMELL INSIDE WHEN THE ENGINE IS ON AND NO OTHER HEATING/COOLING FUNCTIONS ARE TURNED ON.
DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY CAR TENDS TO LOSE POWER AND SPUTTER AND IN SOME CASES IT WILL STALL. WHEN TRYING TO RESTART IT, IT WILL NOT START. THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS. ALSO, IF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND THEN SHUTTING THE ENGINE OFF YOU CAN NOT RESTART IT WITHOUT WAITING AT LEAST 30 MINUTES. MY 16 YEAR OLD HAS BEEN DRIVING THIS CAR AND THE FIRST INSTANCE IT HAPPENED WAS WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING IT. SHE LOST ALL POWER AND WAS NOT EVEN ABLE TO USE HER BRAKES. SHE CAME VERY CLOSE TO HITTING A WALL BUT WAS ABLE TO STEER IT AWAY BUT STEERING WAS VERY DIFFICULT AS WELL. WE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP THINKING IT WASN'T GETTING ENOUGH GAS BUT THIS STILL HASN'T FIXED THE ISSUE. WE ARE TOLD BY MECHANICS THAT THE PROBLEM CAN'T BE DUPLICATED THEREFORE IT CAN'T BE FIXED. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT NISSAN HAS NOT RECALLED THIS CAR DUE TO MANY COMPLAINTS WITH THIS ISSUE. I GUESS SOMEONE HAS TO LOSE THEIR LIFE BEFORE THEY WILL FIX IT. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE VERSA AND NISSAN TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT AND FIX IT BEFORE SOMEONE DIES.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN A 30MPH CHICAGO STREET MY CAR ENGINE JUST SHUT OFF. I HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT AND ACTUALLY REACH A SPACE BUT THAT SPACE WAS TOW ZONE SO I HAD TO SIT THERE WITH MY CAR FOR 3 HOURS WHILE I WAITED FOR A TOW TRUCK BECAUSE IT WAS ACTUALLY RUSH HOUR. AFTER TAKING IT TO AAA CAR BODY SHOP, THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE WAS JUST DEAD. AND AFTER THEY TOOK IT APART THEY COULD ONLY SPECULATE BUT WITH SOME CONFIDENCE FROM SEEING SOMETHING SIMILAR IN THE PAST THAT SOME SORT OF CHAIN INSIDE THE ENGINE SNAPPED AND STRUCK THE ENGINE AND CAUSED THE CYLINDERS TO COME TO A HALT. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT HE SAW SOMETHING SIMILAR IN A MID 2000'S SATURN. IN WHICH CASE IT ENDED UP BEING A RECALL FOR THAT LINE OF CAR. HE SAID IF YOU KEEP THE RECEIPT AND SOMEDAY IT ENDS UP BEING A RECALL, I COULD POSSIBLY GET A REFUND. ANYWAYS, THE BIGGER DEAL IS THAT THIS IS A HIGHLY HAZARDOUS BREAKDOWN. IM GLAD I WAS NOT ON A HIGHWAY WAITING 3 HOURS FOR A TOW. BUT IM ALSO GLAD I COULD COAST ON THE MOMENTUM I HAD. AFTER THE INITIAL BREAKDOWN THAT HAD A POPPING SOUND, MY CAR FELT HEAVY BECAUSE I LOST POWER STEERING AS WELL SO THE TURN INTO THE FORTUNATE PARKING SPACE WAS ACTUALLY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS NOT JUST TO ME BUT ALSO TO PEDESTRIANS. BECAUSE DURING THAT TIME IF I HAD TO SWERVE OUT OF THE WAY, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO. ALSO THE BREAKS WERE HEAVY.. THIS MORNING WHEN I DROVE TO WORK AND CAME INTO THE PARKING GARAGE I NOTICED A LOUD NOISE MAKING MY VERSA S HATCHBACK SOUND LIKE A MONSTER TRUCK. I DROVE IT HOME ABOUT 15 MILES AND INSPECTED IT. APPEARS THE INCOMING MUFFLER PIPE "DISCONNECTED" FROM THE GASKET WITH A FAIRLY CLEAN BREAK. THIS HAPPENED ON THE SIDE OF THE MUFFLER CLOSER TO THE ENGINE AND FURTHEST AWAY FROM THE BACK OF THE HATCHBACK. CAUSING LOUD NOISE, SEEMS TO BE WORSE WHEN IDLED AT A STOP LIGHT/SIGN. FOUND A FORUM ONLINE THAT STATES THIS HAPPENS IN NORTHERN CLIMATES (I LIVE IN MI) AND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED SOONER THAN I DID. *TR
THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FLANGE THAT CONNECTS TO THE INTERMEDIATE EXHAUST PIPE CORRODED AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THERE'S NOT EVEN 30,000 MILES ON THE CAR. MOREOVER, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE INTERMEDIATE PIPE AND THE MUFFLER ALSO CORRODED SO THE INTERMEDIATE PIPE HAD TO BE REPLACED. AT APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MILES I HAD TO HAVE THE MUFFLER AND TAILPIPE REPLACED BECAUSE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO HAD CORRODED AND THEY HAD SEPARATED. *TR
TRYING TO FIND OUT IF RECALL ON 2009 NISSAN VERSA. NOTICED CAR ENGINE SEEMED LOUDER THAN USUAL. MECHANIC FOUND 'MUFFLER NECK' (BRACKET WHERE PIPE FROM ENGINE GOES INTO MUFFLER) WAS RUSTED WITH A HOLE, HAD TO GET NEW MUFFLER AND GASKET ETC., $389.26 FOR PARTS/LABOR/TAX. MECHANIC SHOWED ME THE MUFFLER SYSTEM THAT HE REMOVED. REST OF MUFFLER/PIPE SYSTEM WAS NOT RUSTED, SO I'M SUSPECTING A DESIGN PROBLEM WHERE WATER IS SOMEHOW ACCUMULATING IN THAT ONE AREA TO RUST JUST THAT SPOT, BUT REQUIRING THE WHOLE SYSTEM THEN BE REPLACED. AT ABOUT 81,000 MILES AND CAR IS GARAGED, THIS DOES NOT SEEM LIKE NORMAL WEAR. I'VE READ OTHER COMPLAINTS POSTED ONLINE ALSO ABOUT THE MUFFLER SYSTEM ROTTING OUT TOO SOON, AND MANY SEEM TO BE ABOUT THE SAME MILEAGE AS MINE. EITHER A DESIGN AND/OR PARTS QUALITY ISSUE, IT SEEMS. *TR
MUFFLER RUSTED THROUGH AND CRACKED THROUGH NORMAL DRIVING. I WAS LUCKY THAT THE PIECES DID NOT COME APART ON HIGHWAY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. SEEMS LIKE A PRODUCT DEFECT THAT THE ONLY PART OF THE CAR UNDERCARRIAGE THAT RUSTED IS THE MUFFLER. HAD JUST HAD THE CAR SERVICED BY NISSAN WHO DID NOT EVER WARN ME THAT ANYTHING WAS OUT OF THE ORDINARY WITH THE MUFFLER. NOW I'M FORCED TO PAY ALMOST $600 FOR THE REPAIR. *TR
IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTUP, A LOUD RUMBLING NOISE SIMILAR TO AFTER MARKET EXHAUST WAS AUDIBLE AS WELL AS A STRONG VIBRATION DOWN THE CENTER LONG-AXIS OF THE CAR. I STEPPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND INSPECTED THE UNDERCARRIAGE TO FIND THAT THE FLANGE HAD ERODED AND THE MUFFLER WAS DANGEROUSLY LOOSE. NO RUST IS VISIBLE, AND THE UNDERCARRIAGE IS CLEAN, SO THIS IS NOT DUE TO INADEQUATE MAINTENANCE OR ROAD SALT. I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE WHERE SERVICE STATIONS AND REPAIR SHOPS HAVE COMMENTED THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW IN THE VERSA MUFFLER, WHICH TYPICALLY FAILS BETWEEN 50-80K MILES. ALLOWING SUCH A FAILURE TO CONTINUE ON THE ROAD WITHOUT A RECALL MAY RESULT IN UNSAFE ROAD CONDITIONS FOR ALL DRIVERS; IF THE MUFFLER FALLS OFF, IT WILL BECOME AN OBSTACLE ON THE ROAD WHICH MAY IMPACT OTHER VEHICLES OR CAUSE DRIVERS TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING THE MATERIAL. *TR
MY EXHAUST STARTED TO MAKE A LOT OF NOISE WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON, THE MUFFLER WAS RATTLING. WHEN I CHECKED UNDERNEATH THE CAR IT LOOKED LIKE THE MUFFLER HAD CAME LOOSE. I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY SHOWED ME WHERE THE EXHAUST HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND IS DETACHED FROM THE MUFFLER. I RESEARCHED , THAT NISSAN VERSA EXHAUST SYSTEM IS KNOWN TO PER-MATURELY RUST, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING TO REPLACE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM OR MUFFLER DUE TO CHEAP PARTS. *TR

A BRAND NEW CAR BOUGHT EARLY JANUARY 2009. IT HAS 60885 MILES WHEN INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE MUFFLER FALL DOWN AND BROKE AT FLANGE CONNECTION POINT. WENT TO NISSAN DEALER TO CHECK OUT AND EXAM THE PROBLEM. THEY INDICATE THAT A CORROSION FROM INSIDE THE MUFFLER PIPE HAS OCCURRED AND CAUSED THIS CRACKS, SO IT FALL DOWN. IT WAS CLEAR A POOR MANUFACTURING, OR DEFAULT IN MANUFACTURING THIS PART WAS THE REASON TO CAUSE THIS INCIDENT. DEALER OFFERED TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW PART WITH COST UP TO $ 600, WHERE IT SUPPOSED TO BE FREE OF CHARGE. I WOULD TO CLAIM NISSAN US CORP. RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS INCIDENT. THEY DID NOT MADE EARLY RECALL TO REPLACE THIS PART WHERE THEY KNEW THE PROBLEM. IT WAS CLEAR THAT THEY WAIT TO HAPPEN AT ANY TIME TO MAKE MORE PROFITS. THIS IT LOOKS LIKE AS A FRAUD. SUPPOSE CONTROVERSY, THIS MUFFLER FALL DOWN ON HIGH SPEED ROAD, IT MAY BE CAUSE, AND COULD BE, A DEADLY ACCIDENT. THEREFORE, I AM ASKING YOU PLEASE TO INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM WITH ALL NISSAN VEHICLES, AND DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT US FROM SUCH ACCIDENT, AND TO PROVIDE US WITH A SUITABLE COMPENSATION. AS HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED IN 29 PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE, NISSAN VERSA HAS KNOWN FAILURE OF EXHAUST SYSTEM FLANGE WITHIN 36-48 MONTHS, RESULTING IN MUFFLER FAILURE AND DANGEROUS LEVELS OF TOXIC FUMES ENTERING CABIN AND OUTSIDE AIR. POTENTIAL LOSS OF MUFFLER WHILE DRIVING ALSO CREATES RISK OF ACCIDENT AND INJURY TO CAR PASSENGERS AND/OR OTHER VEHICLES ON ROAD. EXPENSE TO REPAIR VIA MIDAS IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE WAS $474, WITH THIS ONE LOCATION REPORTING THIS AS "STANDARD" ISSUE WITH ALL NISSAN'S, FOR WHICH THEY HAVE COMPLETED "NON STOP" REPAIRS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE DUE TO HAZARDOUS GASES THAT CAN LEAK INTO THE CABIN OR MUFFLERS THAT MAY FALL INTO THE ROAD. *TR

THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 56,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
