NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Driving in town, received a "Service Power Steering" light and message, lost power steering. Very difficult to steer afterwards.
Steering is not safely operable at all You cannot steal the vehicle if you lose your power steering which is electronically controlled some of these units were recalled and they're used on several thousand trucks with this electrical system and you can't get the parts because there's so many being repaired. It's a very expensive part and if steering goes out while you're towing a camper or my case a tractor it could be very dangerous you could put your family at risk and your life at risk and others at risk. This is an ongoing problem with these trucks and it should be addressed and has been somewhat by the manufacturer for just a couple of years for some kind of contamination but it needs to be included on all these models from 13 to 19 if you study you'll see that there is several thousand trucks with steering issues that completely with no notice stop working. It's a very dangerous situation and I think they should recall it and replace it I did have to order a part it's $2,000 plus labor The dealer ship cannot get the part I had to get it from another supplier.
The reluctor wheel on my 2014 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel has failed. The truck was taken to the dealer on May 8th of 2023 where they flashed the ECU as a remedy for the vehicle losing signal between the magnetic material on the Tone Wheel (reluctor wheel). A few months later the vehicle went into "limp mode" with a crankshaft position sensor fault and became hard to start. A local mechanic shop explained to me that the tone wheel is has failed leading to the hard starting and advised me that there is a Technical Service Bulletin on the issue and I should call a local dealer to see if they will do the repair at no cost. I called a local dealer to tell them that the tone wheel has failed and asked if it was part of the recall [XXX] ). I was told no that it is not part of the recall and repairs would be an out of pocket cost. These tone wheel failures are a known issue by the manufacturer and flashing the ECU is a half measure at best in an effort for them to do as little as possible to address the actual issue for the consumer. The safety of my wife and other drivers was put at risk when the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly went into limp mode on a busy highway where limp mode is well below the speed of traffic. Had the recall addressed the known faulty part instead of just telling the ECU to force limp mode when the known faulty part inevitably fails the safety of my wife and the public would not have been affected by this issue. My 2014 ram 1500 has a ticking noise which in turn is creating an exhaust smell inside my vehicle which is making me dizzy / sleepy when I drive.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) and 23V411000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and determined that the parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Second time in 1 year my power steering has stopped working without warning. Hopefully it will start working again out of nowhere like last time but no guarantee. Luckily I have strong arms but someone older or compromised would not be able to drive this truck. This was a recall however my 2014 was not included in it which is ridiculous because it definitely has the electrical issue stated in the recall pertaining to this issue. Please address as this can be very dangerous for people.
Air suspension fails while driving causing vehicle to sit on the bump stops. Vehicle become unresponsive and unsafe to drive. FCA knows about the air suspension pre-mature failure due to inferior components in the compressor and distribution block.
Steering intermittently stops working, especially when navigating turns. The steering gets stuck in the turned position. Definitely very dangerous. If I hadn't slammed on the brakes, I would have been in the woods. The power steering warning light came on, but went off when vehicle was restarted. Yet the problem persists.
On Saturday Sept. 23, 2023 I was driving about 25-30 MPH and the power steering went out. I took the truck to the dealership immediately that day for diagnostics. They said the Power steering rack failed (part #68628858AA) and the part is not available. They said it is on backorder until January 2024 or possibly longer. I picked up the truck that Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023 to sit in the drive until further notice. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and others were put at risk when driving and the power steering went out without notice. I was unable to steer the vehicle in a timely manner, or if I needed to swerve quickly would not have been able to do that. As of right now the vehicle has only been inspected by the dealership. Prior to the steering going out, There was also ABS brake warning light which I had looked at by an independent service center on Aug. 17th, 2023 who determined that I needed a new ABS brake module replace (part #68228991AD).
While parking, the steering locked up. I was unable to turn the steering wheel or the wheels. A mechanic later confirmed the electronic power steering rack and pinion component failed.
Electronic Power Steering failure. Lost while driving.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the engine revved, but the vehicle hesitated to respond. The check engine warning light was illuminated and the message "Service TCU" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the Crankshaft Position Sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V475000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that another dealer had previously performed the recall repair on the vehicle; however, the dealer flashed the computer, but did not replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 257,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the engine revved loudly although the accelerator pedal was not depressed. The message "Service electronic throttle Control" was displayed. The contact stated that she depressed the accelerator pedal and drove the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 50 MPH. The contact stated that the failure recurred while starting the vehicle, and she had stopped driving the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 163,892. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
I have a fault in the ABS Control Module. I have been waiting on a replacement part since September of 2023. The current part number for repair has been discontinued and it sounds like the ABS Control Module is under engineering review. When the fault is thrown it turns of traction control and does not allow the use of 4 wheel drive. I have serious safety concerns when driving my vehicle when the abs fault is thrown. If the part has been discontinued and it is under engineering review how has it not been recalled.
Hello, the ABS module failed in September 2023. This caused the ABS, traction control, and cruise control to be disabled. My local dealer inspected it to confirm the issue and placed an order for a replacement. It is now October 2024 (yes, 13 months later), and Stellanis is still unable to provide an estimate for part delivery. I am unable to pass my state saftey inspection and do not have the safety features that the part enables. I have communicated with stellanis for the past 8 months but they continue to say they cannot provide an ETA for the part. I don't know where else to go to resolve the issue to make my truck safe to drive.
Leaky manifold with broken bolts replaced on passenger side by RAM dealer at my cost. Drivers side now needs replaced. RAM 1500 has 71,000 miles on it. The pickup has and had a ticking noise for at least a year before dealer discovered it during an oil change. I wasn’t aware it was due to the defective manifolds. This seems to be a common problem with RAMs. Concerned about breathing in noxious fumes.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, after going through a speed bump, the vehicle suddenly lost all motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the tone wheel sensor. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The dealer diagnosed a failure with the high-pressure fuel pump. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) the VIN was included, but parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 142,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The vehicle power steering stopped working without warning making the vehicle very difficult to steer if at all steerable. The power steering warning light on the dash came on at the same time the issue began. This made the vehicle very dangerous to drive. Luckily I was driving on a straight and not in the middle of a curve or it would have been difficult to stay in the lane I was in. I have tried to get a service advisor at the dealership close to my home and have left messages but have not been contacted nor do they return my calls.
Front fuel tank T strap has become corroded and detached from bracket causing fuel tank to hang down low in front and shakes while driving. Recall #18v-160 pertains to this specific issue for people like myself who live in salt belt BUT it only includes ram 1500’s up to year 2012 however 2013-2014 rams have this same exact T strap as the one recalled. This is a huge safety issue as it could cause a fire. I should not have to pay for this repair when Chrysler knows it’s a faulty part. I don’t understand why that recall wouldn’t cover 2014 ram 1500’s when it’s exactly the same as the 2012 covered ram 1500’s.
On Monday I was on my way to work when my ABS Light, Traction Control Light, and Parking Brake Light all came on at the same time and a message on the dash that said “Service ABS System”. I took my truck to the dealership on 12-Sep for them to look at it. The dealership advised my ABS Control Module failed and needs to be replaced but they cannot get one until April of 2024. When I asked about the safety of driving the vehicle, I was advised the vehicle can be driven but I need to be very cautious while driving because I have no anti-lock brakes until the part is replaced. I travel on the interstate daily for my kids school and to work for 45-60 minutes in each direction during rush hour traffic. Not having anti-lock brakes makes me concerned my safety, the safety of my kids, and the safety of anyone around me should I have to slam on brakes in an emergency.
2014 Dodge RAM with the Hemi engine - noticing a ticking sound coming from the truck’s engine bay. Sound seems to lessen or stop after the engine has warmed up. This is from broken exhaust manifold bolts and a broken manifold. This is the third time this has happend with 150k miles. It creates dangerous exhaust leak in engine campartment!
The contact owned a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 MPH the vehicle crashed into a cement wall. During the crash, the vehicle sustained severe front-end damage and was destroyed. The contact indicated that no air bags in the vehicle deployed during the crash. The driver sustained neck, back, left shoulder, and hip injuries which later required medical treatment. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 139,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the vehicle hesitated while attempting to accelerate. The electronic throttle control and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer, and it was determined that the crankshaft position sensor needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
ABS control unit failed as diagnosed by an independent repair shop when the dealer was contacted for parts availability was told part would not be released until April 2024. Currently my vehicle has no ABS, traction control, Vehicle stability control etc..... After doing some online research I have found many, many people that have had this same concern for years now with this same part. How is this not a recall at this point seeing as how when this module fails it disables the majority of the safety features on the vehicle?
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality, requiring excessive force while maneuvering the vehicle. The contact stated that a red steering symbol with an exclamation point was displayed on the instrument cluster. The vehicle had now become inoperable. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
Loss of power steering randomly while driving and very hard to turn vehicle. Very dangerous and risks safety of myself and others because steering wheel locks up and does not want to turn while driving. I don’t feel safe driving it like this. Local shop said it is the electric power steering issue. No warning lights.
Service Electronic Braking System warning on the EVIC comes on, no cruise control, not sure if anti-lock brakes will work properly and various other items won't work. Huge problem with 4th Generation RAM Owners.
TWO YEARS AGO MY FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WENT BAD AND STOPPED READING MY GAS LEVEL. I HAD TO ORDER A NEW SENSOR ,FROM THE DEALER. WHICH COMES WITH A FUEL PUMP AND HAVE MY GAS TANK DROPPED TO REPLACE. THE PART HAS A ONE YEAR WARRANTY AND THE TOTAL COST IS APPR $900 TO FIX. NOW SIX MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY, THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED. MY GAS GAUGE STOPPED WORKING AND ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. A DIAGNOSTIC READER POINTS TO MY FUEL LEVEL SENSOR. I CHECKED YOUTUBE AND RAM FORUMS TO SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT RAM REFUSES TO ADDRESS. CAN WE GET JUSTICE HERE?
For the past year or so, the power steering will cut out requiring significantly increased effort. This seems to be random and comes and goes. Recently it has become more frequent including today when I was turning at an intersection, This appears to be an issue with this generation of Ram trucks so I felt I should report it.
ABS Module failure causing disablement of cruise control, anti lock brakes, and traction control systems. Without these systems vehicle is experiencing degraded braking performance and no traction control /ABS to assist drivers in wet or slick road conditions or emergency braking. No parts are available from the manufacture, with no known date when the part will be available in order to repair this issue. This means the vehicle will have to be operated without the effected safety systems causing increased risk to the driver and other motorist.
Approximately 1 year ago, the factory air suspension system on my 2014 Ram 1500 Limited would cease to function, displaying an alert saying "Air Suspension Immediate Service Required", and the suspension system would drop down to the point that the truck suspension was riding on the bump-stops. I took the vehicle to a Dodge/Ram Dealership service center, where the suspension compressor and air distribution valving was replaced, costing of $5,000.00. Initially this cured the problem, but a few months later, the problem cropped up again. This issue has now progressed to the point that at about 30=45 minutes into driving, the same alert comes up on my dash display, with the same results.
The ABS lights came on and then I started to have traction issues. When it rains I start to spin out even when lightly accelerating. Having brand new tires and four wheel drive, I should be able to make it up a slightly snowed on road without issues. I can't haul anything with the truck because it just spins in place. I can't trust the brakes when trying to stop in almost any condition. It was confirmed by a Ram dealership that it is in fact the ABS module issue. There was no prior issues with the trucks driving before the lights came on. I have been checking for over a year for this part, as it has been on back order. The RAM dealership said there were other trucks with this same issue and no resolution due to the part being unavailable everywhere. This poses a safety risk to myself and my family, as well as others around me if the brakes lock up and go out.
My 2014 Ram 1500 ABS light, traction control, and brake light popped up and if I drive it for a short bit and stop and shut it off and crank it up the light don’t come back on. It has been doing this all the time through the winter and now says on all the time. All so the back up camera doesn’t power up when you first start vehicle for about two minutes on the radio display. The camera not coming on creates a big safety issue when backing up. We have small grandchildren and this makes it a big safety concern.
No start issue. I initially started my truck and it was running very rough and the check engine light came on so I shut it off, and then attempted to restart my truck and it turned over fine but would not start. This left me stranded out of town late in the day so I had it towed to my home. I have now learned that there are two outstanding recalls, one for the tone wheel (20V475) and for the high pressure fuel pump (22V406) either of which would cause a no start. I have contacted a local dealership and they informed me that they already have a truck in their shop for the same problems and it has been there for over six months. I then called the dealership were I purchased it on July 10, 2023 and they said they could not take care me because the parts are not available and suggested I take it to an independent repair shop.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at 50–60 MPH, the steering wheel seized. The contact depressed the brake pedal and slowly drove into the ditch. There were no warning lights illuminated. There were no reported injuries. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
the fuel tank straps disconnected, it appears there was a recall on the 2009-2012 ram 1500 trucks. The issue persists in the later years as well, 2 of the 3 straps disconnected.
Engine stalled while passing vehicle on the highway. Lost power no acceleration. Once the engine stalled and I could not accelerate multiple vehicles behind me almost wrecked almost causing a multiple car pile up. It was towed to dealership. Dealership ran its diagnosis and the issue was the tone wheel. They told me it was a recall 66A that has no fix yet. Multiple warning lamps came on once the engine stalled. Once parked tried starting the truck and it would not turn over. It told me to service engine throttle body control. There were no warnings before the engine stalled. I bought the truck a week ago and now I do not have a vehicle or an ETA on when my truck will be fixed. There is another recall out on this truck from almost a year ago with no fix either. I called FCA and all they told me is there was no fix. Now I have no vehicle and FCA wont give me a rental truck. So now I have no truck haul or tow with.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. An undisclosed dealer was contacted and confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that on numerous occasions while driving approximately 65-70 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65-70 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump and sending unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, 2 months later, the failure recurred. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Power Steering Failed all of a sudden while riding around 40mph. put myself and others in danger. Unable to turn without puttting alot of strength into it. No warning lamps or messages about power steering.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH and driving to the left, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The power steering assist fault message was displayed. The contact manually steered the vehicle using excessive force. The contact drove to a location and was able to pull over and restart the vehicle however, the failure persisted. The following day while pulling out of the driveway, the failure recurred after several minutes. The contact called the Mopar Hotline and was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 10148569 (Steering) and 10149005 (Steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.
No accident has happened but I have had the Anti-lock brake module go bad in my truck and it has disabled cruise control, anti-lock brakes and traction control. So basically just old fashion standard braking is all that is working. Took it to the dealership and they told me the part is on hold by Ram for review by their engineers. So I called Ram directly and they said it is under review but they could expedite the part for me. I see there is a law suit pending for the 2017-2018 Ram 2500 and 2017-2018 Ram 3500 but not any other years. After doing some further research online and using an ODB reader I see that this is actually a very common issue even with my year and model. Even at the dealership when I started to explain the issue, they stopped my and told me exactly what it was and that they have seen it many times. I believe because of the number of issues being registered online and in dealerships that this should be a safety recall, especially because we are talking about braking. I will attach photos.
The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
While driving the steering all of a sudden became almost impossible to turn. Upon pulling vehicle over an shutting down and restarting the truck, it was ok, but then did the same thing the next day, then an entire week there after intermittently. I have taken it locally to be looked at by the RAM dealer near me. Laurel Chrysler RAM in Johnstown Pennsylvania. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle.
While driving, the power steering stop functioning. There was no accident however, it functioning properly in traffic.

My electric steering went out while driving almost causing an accident and the whole unit has to be replaced and it’s around $2900. I’m filing a complaint because I notice online I’m not the only one having this issue that millions of people have had this problem and no recall for my truck to fix this issue. I just had an engine and going to have the power steering put in when it comes in. I had to replace the motor due to the lifters and the mds tearing up my motor.
