NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road each time and the battery was disconnected and reconnected. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed on several occasions that several unknown parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a complaint was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
The air suspension system has failed completely. Without warning the driverside suspension deflated at 65mph. This causes the steering to pull to the left very quickly and could easily cause loss of control of the truck. The problem occurred with out warning. The dealers response is to not drive the truck and wait 3 weeks for a diagnostic test and then a month or longer to get parts.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while attempting to drive the vehicle, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated that the power steering warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the electronic power steering (EPS) module needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
On Sunday March 27, 2022 my daughter and I were in my 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn 5.7 liter Hemi, driving east bound on a major road leading from my neighborhood. We were going about 50 mph when the entire dash board lit up like a Christmas tree, windshield wipers, radio volume going up and down, all sensors going off, and the entire speedometer went black, all of this happened going full speed, oh, and the gear shift knob turned off!!!! I couldn’t control my vehicle at all. All of this happened and then it just went black, no speedometer, no gear shifter, and no steering control!! I want to remind you that I was driving with my child in the truck!! It is now at my local mechanic with the truck completely bricked. No power whatsoever, gear is stuck, and the key fob is stuck in ACC and they cannot get it out. This needs to be investigated asap. If I was in the highway we would have killed ourselves and possibly someone else. I lost all control over my vehicle due to some freak electrical issue Chrysler refuses to fix. Maybe a fat lawsuit will help. If you research the complaints on this vehicle, you will see this is not the first time this has happened. Does someone, or a family, have to die first before you will respond?!! This is on you Chrysler to do the right thing. Recall these trucks ASAP. I swear to you someone is going to die if you do not act now!! I’m a combat veteran who has been in actual combat, and this was one of the most terrifying incidents of my life, mainly because my babygirl was in there with me. For the price I paid for this truck, it should be darn near bulletproof. Sad day when American manufacturers put profit over people.
Air bags deployed while vehicle was parked and engine not running….vehicle was not hit or tampered with ..I was inside vehicle vacuuming when air bags went off without any warning..insurance gave me points for incident when there was no reason for air bags to deploy and I had to pay deductible…I should be reimbursed
Recurring issue with warped manifolds that cause broken exhaust bolts.
While in gear the throttle has accelerated uncontrollably without a foot on the pedal. It has happened twice now and both times resulted in significant damage. Applying the brake made no difference they were just overpowered by the motor. The vehicle is going to be towed to a body shop to get a repair estimate. Last time the damage was about $14,000. The vehicle is not safe if you cannot control the speed. They thought last time my foot slipped of the brake onto the throttle but I said no it had not. I was to busy trying to control the truck to notice if any warning lights went on. However earlier in the day the cruise control would not turn on.
Two right rear exhaust manifold bolts broke causing a potential exhaust leak into the cabin.
Brake clip failed. Clip to brake pad on driver side front came loose and caused the brake pad to slip and caliper drop down onto the top of the rotor. Upon braking NO PRESSURE was being applied to the side of the rotor. All the pressure was only on the TOP OF THE ROTOR. There was no wear or etching on the side of the rotor at all, however the top of the rotor had a great deal of pitted and gouged metal. This created a very dangerous situation!
It’s the oil filter housing it’s made out of plastic and the heat of the engine cause the seals to leak oil mechanic said to upgrade it with an aluminum housing instead
While making a left turn at low speed, I suddenly lost power steering, there was no warning message or notice and steering was very hard, I pulled over, shut the vehicle off and restarted, the power steering returned and I resumed my trip. The second incident, the vehicle was parked in my driveway, I started it up and immediately got a message on the dash that said, Service Power Steering, the power steering was not available, maneuvering was next to impossible. I have just purchased this vehicle on 2/28/22, used as is, with no warranty and I feel I have purchased a dangerous vehicle with no options available. This vehicle is a 2017 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Limited with 128,00 miles on it. I understand there are some issues with the EPS system on several of the Ram 1500 Model years, and there has even been a recall on some models. I feel it necessary to report this incident as I am afraid to drive the vehicle, which makes this purchase useless, even after researching this vehicles history before buying, I had no way of knowing of the current EPS problems as there are no current recalls for my particular truck. If there is a problem with the EPS system, at the time of manufacturing, then why haven't the 2017 models been recalled as well. Also my local dealer cannot effectively make any repairs unless he has a code or the power steering is not available at the time he inspects it, and ironically it works fine intermittently.
Engine blew up with no warning indicators on the dash. Engine oil was full and from what the dealer found it was a bearing either the crankshaft or rod. I've been without my truck for over 2 months and fiat chrysler doesn't know when a motor will be available.
My electronic power steering failed. Makes it next to impossible to steer. Thankfully low speed, so no crash. No warning prior to failure.
Electronic power steering stopped working while traveling at highway speeds. No warnings, no issues with steering previously. Manual steering when eps fails is still possibly, but extremely difficult. Vehicle will operate normally after turning off and back on.
The contact owns 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, she flipped the seats and noticed gray powered mildew under both seats. The contact took the vehicle to local dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer informed that the two air vents on the cab have leakage, and the floorboards were soaked and needed replacement. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
Power steering becomes inoperable
2017 Ram Quad cab truck leaking water into cabin ? 3 rd rear brake light gasket replaced and still finding water on front windshield and dash and also under back fold up seat storage compartments filled with water ??? There are numerous complaints re: Ram trucks of different years experiencing same problems why is this not a issue for a recall when this will rot out floor n cause mold on interior carpets and headliners ? My truck has 12,169 miles on it and I feel like it is worthless !!! I didn’t buy a fish tank I purchased a very expensive truck that Ram knows has this problem many many times ?
Air suspension fails repeatedly in cold weather. Vehicle has been repaired twice under manufacturer warranty and extended warranty. I am concerned that if this fails while the vehicle in motion an accident may result. There are many documented cases of this issue and, as I read online, a pending class action lawsuit in Canada as a result.
Chrysler (RAM) truck 2017 3.6 pentstar enjine 3.6L Oil Filter Housing Leak - vehicle has 50 k miles on it. vehicle oil has pumped out of the engine due to this faulty oil filter housing.
While traveling on a paved state maintained road at approximately 45-50 miles per hour, the driver side front tire on my 2017 RAM 1500 exploded. The condition of the road at the time was clear and there were no foreign objects laying in the lane of travel. Upon the tire exploding, I was immediately pulled left into the opposing lane of traffic. No injuries or crash were reported during this incident, however had my rate of speed been higher, lack of driving skills, or oncoming traffic, the results could have proved to be fatal. After finding a safe location off of the travelled roadway, I replaced the faulty tire with a spare. I observed damage to my inner fender liner as a result of the explosion. The tire has not been inspected by the police, insurance company, or the manufacturer. No warning lamps or other indicators provided notification of any problems prior to the incident. The faulty tire in question is Identified as a Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, P275/60R20. This tire is an original installation from the vehicle manufacturer and has been in service for 20,300 miles. This particular tire blew out in a straight line fashion across the tread section of the tire from sidewall to the opposite sidewall. This is the first time that I have ever reported a safety matter, however due to the unique circumstances of the failure of this tire, I feel that this matter should be investigated and this tire removed from service. I have conducted internet searches and found other consumers have experienced the exact same tire failure scenario. I will be replacing all four Gooodyear tires on my RAM truck tomorrow with a completely different manufacturer. The tire can be retained for inspection if necessary, although it will be disposed of if no such request is received.
My truck has been parked at a Dodge Service Center for three days. I've been told the suspension has failed and needs to be replaced. The cost will be approximately $4,000. I've never been in an accident. I've never used the truck to tow anything. I don't drive off-road. I DO perform regular maintenance before the recommended time/mileage. I use quality products (oils, filters, brakes, etc.). No 5 year old vehicle should have a failed suspension from regular commuter/family driving. The suspension has been finicky for over two years mainly occurs in the colder months. My friend owns the same model truck (can provide VIN if needed) and his truck's suspension failed after year one. Luckily, it was still under warranty but took multiple trips to the dealership and much hassle to fully repair/replace his truck's suspension. Prior to my truck's suspension completely failing rendering it not drivable, there were many times I was driving on the highway alone and sometimes with my family when the truck would drop lower than entry mode with no warning - a huge safety risk to passengers and cars around me. The truck would be moving at highway speeds with essentially no suspension causing it to bounce and wobble within the lane and over the line. My children are now afraid to drive in the truck. Please hold Ram-Dodge-Chrysler accountable. Please make them do what is right. Please issue a recall for the air suspension. They should fix the air suspension supplying a lifetime warranty OR replace the air suspension with a tradition suspension that won't fail in cold weather. Ram owners have paid a premium for this vehicle. Please fix this safety issue. (I have included two pictures of my truck at the Dodge Service Center. Not surprisingly, it is parked next to another Ram Rebel with the same suspension issue. Notice the fenders almost touching the wheels particularly in the back. Also on the truck next to mine, notice the tilt to the right and the sinking in the back.)
Air bag light comes on from time to time wiggle some wires under the seat and light goes away,so I think it disables the airbags cause it says they need to be serviced, also engine knocks when start up the. Goes into a little knock after warm up, continues through driving all day some days worst then ever , weather it be fresh oil or 509 mike's down the rd , to 2000 miles down the rd, I think it's a manufacturer error
Air ride suspension drops to bump stops when it rains. Causing the truck to have no suspension give that can cause severe damage. Truck has been at the dealers over this problem multiple times, they do not know what is causing the system to fail now. They have replaced the main components and the truck is still sitting on all 4 bump stops unable to drive.
loss of electric power steering (EPS) when taking left turns and trying to straightening the wheel back there no power steering and this happens at all speeds called Ram dealer two week wait to get it in to look at it. no warning lamps or messages. looks like there a recall on 2013-2016 Ram 1500 and 2018 -2020 Ram 1500 for this problem but not for 2017 ?
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V757000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the dealer informed the contact that the parts for the recall repair were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and advised the contact that they would special order the parts. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Since owning my 2017 Dodge Ram I have had issues with the fuel nozzle becoming stuck in the tank this is every single gas station I have spent nearly 20 to 1 hr trying to get the nozzle out I have researched in-line and apparently this is an overwhelming issue as other people and in the dodge forum complained about this Several times the pump does not shut off because the nozzle is still engaged And when it was able to become dislodged via force gas has spilt everywhere I even had employees and a fuel truck driver try to get this off This is a huge safety and mechanical issue and I’m very frustrated my dodge dealer will not assist me because Ethel say it’s not under warranty It is getting stuck due to the angle of the filler tube between years 2015 and 2017 this last time Was just recent but other times every month Please help
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph a second vehicle crashed into the rear and pushed the vehicle into a guardrail. During the crash, the front end of the vehicle was severely damaged but no air bags were deployed. The driver sustained injuries to the left knee and wrist and back and neck. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away. A police report was taken at the scene. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
Saturday, October 23rd at around 11:00 am the airbag system check light came on. Brought it to my local mechanic who reviewed the code for the warning and it stated Code B0028-13 Ride Side Seat Deployment Squib 1 Circuit Open. Asked him if it could have been hit with one of my kids feet and he stated absolutely no based on where the connections where located under the seat.
2017 Dodge Ram 1500 with less than 30,000 miles is showing an air bag system warning. Have checked all the components under the seat as well as the fuses. Nothing seems to be faulty or out of place.
The vehicle’s electronic ignition control does not seem to detect the presence of the key flob in order to activate, thus leaving the vehicle inoperable. This is an intermittent problem. I contacted my local dealership (Herb Chambers Ram, Millbury, MA.) and a service inspection was conducted. Though the dealership could not replicate this fault during my visit, they did confirm that an internal Ram service advisory exists pertaining to this ignition problem. The recommended correction is to replace the ignition module. The dealership put the part on order. It has now been four weeks since my visit. The dealership reports that the part is on back order and without an expected delivery date. I am also told that the module is a Ram/Mopar specific unit. As such, only an OEM can be used. In the meantime, I am unable to drive the vehicle. Though it may start, I cannot rely upon it restarting. Since an internal Ram service advisory exists on this issue, it is obviously a documented problem. The safety issue at hand is that a faulty ignition module leaves the driver/passengers at risk of being stranded should the unit fail.
Parked the truck and woke up the next morning to the power steering being out.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V757000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact called the local dealer and it was confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact was added to the waiting list. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified however, no further assistance was provided. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
the electric power steering assist has been slowly getting worst causing hard tuning and am worried the steering will fail with family in vehicel and crash.

Tail gate just opens at anytime going up the road. I’ve owned vehicle two weeks and it’s happened three times.
I was in a front end collision. The other vehicle failed to yield right of way and it was a direct hit to the front of my truck. The other vehicle was a 2007 Toyota vin # jtezu14r270089246. My truck was spun almost 360 degrees. I had on my seat belt but the airbag did not deploy. The accident resulted in my having a fractured sternum. The vehicle has not bee inspected but is a total loss.
3 bolts holding DPF and SCR together are known to fail and cause issues to the DEF wiring harness. All three bolts have failed on my truck which could cause the exhaust to fall apart while driving. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent center. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone. The "check engine light" displayed and shortly there after a message popped up that vehicle would not restart in 200 miles. Still waiting to hear back from 1 of 4 dealerships about this issue and have since opened a case with FCA/RAM and have not heard from them either. Truck has not been drivable for 4 days now.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact pulled over and towed the vehicle to his residence. The contact stated that the power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
When the truck gets to a half of a tank the fuel light will come on and the gauge drops down past empty as well as a check engine light will come on. This is getting more frequent and if this happens at a lower fuel amount there is a possibility of the unit running out of fuel and being in traffic or interstate highway. This could prove to be deadly.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 19V757000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact called the local dealer and it was confirmed that the part was not available. The contact was added to the waiting list. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
When the engine was started a ticking sound is heard, this has been happening for approximately 6 months. The ticking would go away after the engine was run for approximately 10 minutes. The truck now has 82639 miles on it and the ticking had gotten worse. I took the truck to the dealer, Dallas Dodge they reported that several of the exhaust bolts/studs have broken (confirmed 6) and the gaskets and the bolts needed to be replaced. My concern with this issue is with an exhaust leak I am worried that this could allow carbon monoxide into the vehicle.
In two occasions, the vehicle speed locked on and the vehicle began accelerating out of control. The dash message lit up stating electronic throttle control service. A quick internet search shows it is a common problem. I know many ram owners who have the exhaust manifolds break repeatedly. Both are severe problems.
WHILE DRIVING ON FWY ENGINE JUST TURN OFF AT 65MPH AND STARTED AGAIN?
The contact's husband owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power steering assist and excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle. The contact's husband had taken the vehicle to the dealer however, the mechanic was unable to service the vehicle. The contact then made an appointment with the dealer for the vehicle to be serviced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, a driver driving a Kia Optima failed to stop causing the contact to crash into the vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The contact mentioned that there was severe front-end damage to his vehicle. The contact sustained injuries to his shoulder, neck, and head. The driver was provided medical attention. A police report was filed. There was no reported fire. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 39,000.
Electronic power steering appears to be intermittently inoperative. I was driving this past weekend and multiple times when turning in parking lot or going under 20 mph or at least that is what I noticed, it became difficult to steer and then forcing steering all the sudden power steering kicks in almost causing accident. I will be taking my truck into dealership but I see there are no recalls yet on this problem and I see complaints going back many years. This is truly a safety concern.....
On 7/16/2021 I was driving my truck when with no warning at all it completely shut off and would not restart and would not let me take the key out. I had to call for a tow truck to pull me out of the drive thru I was stuck at and my truck is currently at my mechanics shop. I was fortunate that this incident took place while moving at a slow speed while in a drive thru at a restaurant. If this had taken place while driving on the freeway or in traffic, I believe I would most likely be dead right now, this was a total shutdown of my truck with absolutely no warning. I called the dealer to advise of the incident and ask if there were any known issues and they were quick to say that only 2018 dodge ram 1500 trucks had this issue and it had to be my battery. Both Triple AAA tow truck driver and mechanic shop that currently has my truck have confirmed that the battery is working perfectly and has no issues. I purchased my truck Oct of 2017 and I am worried that I might have a faulty computer system. Can someone please investigate this incident, I had my 15 yr old son in the truck with me and as I mentioned before if this had happened on the freeway at 75 mph and it completely shut down this same way, we most likely would have been in a major accident and injured and possibly killed. My mechanic spent the entire day trying to find the problem with the truck but is not able to obtain any error codes from the computer. It seems impossible that my truck can completely shut down with no warning, fail to start, fail to be able to remove the key fob from the ignition and yet there is no error showing in the system.
For the second time in about a year my truck has given the error code of "service electronic throttle control." I took it in and was told it was a computer update and it was fixed. Right at about a year later, the same error code appeared. With this error, power to the vehicle is reduced causing safety issues as your ability to maintain speed or accelerate is greatly diminished. I do not know if the part itself was inspected during the original service and computer update. There were no warning lamps or symptoms prior to the error message coming up on the instrument cluster.
