NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The drivers side sun visor has broken and is possible for it to fall onto the steering column while I'm driving, and also hits my head when it swings back and forth. I've read that this is a very common problem with the 2020 RAM.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V767000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was later towed to the local mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 95,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact's son owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer, where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifold needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was 91,189. The VIN was unavailable.
The rear window leaks from the top whenever it rains or I wash the truck. The excessive leaking is causing water stains on the seats and the headliner and may cause mold and mildew creating a health issue. The dealer told me this is out of warranty and wants me to pay $174 to diagnose it. RAM Customer Service was also unwilling to do anything to take care of the problem. I don't need to diagnose it, I already know it leaks. Furthermore, they already know because two service memos have been sent to the dealers back in 2021. There was also a class action lawsuit filed for the issue in 2022. The memos acknowledge that RAM is very well aware of the defect, but because they refuse to issue a recall they don't deem it bad enough to take care of it. They also want me to pay for the full repair, why would I pay for the full repair of a known defect, inside or outside of the warranty? Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I am going to have to switch my brand loyalty after buying 3 $60,000 Mopar Vehicles from the same dealership. Seems to me, just taking care of the problem would be well worth that kind of customer loyalty. We'll see what the dealership decides.
Broken exhaust manifold bolt. Allows exhaust gas to enter engine compartment.
I was on my farm road and I had to back up a long distance. I was surprised to find out the truck is governed not to exceed 20 mph in reverse. While I know most people can’t go in reverse that fast , I do, I can and it’s frustrating knowing I can’t. I look at this as a safety issue because what if I was in a threatening situation and had to back up quickly to get out of that place. So picture in your head someone it trying to do me harm on a single lane road and they have stopped in front of me to carjack me or something similar. I quickly put my car in reverse only to find my max speed is 20 mph. The carjackers car has no limit and they quickly catch me and run me off the road etc etc. I do not need to have that decision of how fast I go in reverse made for me. Is this a new government regulation or something by RAM? I would like an answer.

Dash will occasionally flash stop/start unavailable. Second incident yesterday happened while at a red light. Start/stop went unavailable and vehicle stalled and applied parking brake. Both incidents were while stop/start had been on and after releasing the brake. I see there is an open recall for this on the 2021 models. My vehicles build date is June 2020 seems and fall under the timeline for the 21 models but no recall for my vehicle

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000. The VIN was unavailable.
Exhaust Manifolds have cracked twice on the right and once on the left side in the first 45K miles of the vehicles life. Both times replaced under warranty, there appears to be a design defect here that should be resolved. Leaking exhaust manifold in California will violate CARB emission standards.
While traveling down C470 Eastbound my truck experienced some type of mechanical failure. While on the corner above the bridge for Wadsworth Avenue I felt a sudden loss of control with the truck pulling to the right side of the highway. I immediately took action to pull the truck off the highway while also wrestling for control of the steering to keep the truck from running into the barrier and off the bridge. I was able to bring the truck to a stop just following the bridge (About 100ft). Upon inspection I found the right front tire had folded under itself. It seemed that the upper control arm on the vehicle snapped, pulling out the drive shaft in the process and damaging items like the steering linkage, brakes, tire, brakeline, etc. Dealership diagnosis was: Found right front upper ball joint separated causing excessive damage to the front end components. Only additional work that has been done to the truck was by MOPAR with their 2 inch lift kit, certified by Fiat Chrysler and Mopar for this specific truck. Kit number 77072424 SUSP KIT-LIFT. Dealership did inspection of vehicle 2 days prior to incident with no issues found. I was not able to attach pictures and PDFs to this form
While making a right turn from a stop, I lost all steering almost running into the car adjacent.
Right passenger visor fell off completely from the wire in the ceiling. Left driver side visor loose and is dangling from the wire from the ceiling. They are in place hooked on to the snap on part. Neither one can be used.
The plastic clip that holds the sun visor into the roof has broken after 32,000 miles of driving, when the plastic has failed he visor can fall out of position and into the field of view, the visor can no longer be stored in its correct position, it also needs to be held while driving so that it does not obstruct ones vision.

The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Service electronic braking system stop working. Light and message on dashboard.
Rear backup camera works intermittently, can work or stop working at anytime. Difficult to hook up to a camper or back into a parking space, very dangerous when needed.
Since I purchased the vehicle it's been in the dealership for repairs unacceptable
Driver’s side visor abruptly fell out of the swivel plate while driving. Visor will not stay up/in place. The visor hangs by the electrical wiring.
It has been 2 years since this recall came out and still I get the run around at the dealer that a solution is not available. What I'm I supposed to do still not drive the vehicle or drive as little as possible. this is rediculous and I need this recall resolved emmidiately.
The frame of the back window is cracking causing water to leak into the cab. After talking to the dealership they are saying this is happening with RAM Trucks that has not been recalled. He stated that the control module is located under the rear seat which is getting wet and causing problems to the trun signals, starting of the truck and lighting to malfunction which could cause an accident. There is also airbags located on the rear roof that could cause them not to go off. This repair is going to be between 2000 and 5000 bucks depending on the damage. I believe this should be a safety recall due to the chance of someone's life being lost.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact stated that he became aware that water had leaked into the interior of the vehicle through the rear windshield. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with a possible brake light or antenna failure. The rear window glass was replaced. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred twice, and the rear window glass was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the same dealer for rear window replacement. The contact stated that the rear window glass had been replaced by two local dealers; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance other than replacing the glass. The failure mileage was approximately 16,800.
The start/stop feature on the truck has been malfunctioning and the light has repeatedly came on. The truck has stalled on me while driving on two different occasions. I was in the middle of driving on a busy road and also a highway and the truck stalled on me which could of caused any vehicle to the side of me, or behind me to hit my vehicle causing an accident especially when I have both my kids in the car. The dealer allegedly fixed the problem but clearly it is NOT fixed. The problem has been diagnosed by the dealer at their establishment. They say nothing shows the truck stalling in the computer but I have proof. The truck shook, the start/stop light came on along with the check engine light and then stalled out on me both times. I opened a case with ram care and they dont seem to be of any help nor is the dealer. The dealer refused both times to check the “e-torque” battery that controls the start/stop feature for any failures or malfunctions and gave the excuse that theirs nothing indicating its the battery yet that battery specifically controls that feature. Ram has also recalled 131k trucks and wranglers for stalling. Ive brought the truck to them 2 times this month alone and they refuse to check that battery which 2 other dealers said was the problem. I would of brought it to the other 2 dealers but ram care advised to bring it to the dealer where I purchased the truck from. This is seriously unreal and if something happens or my kids get hurt due to an accident this is gonna be a major lawsuit. I need your help.
The driver’s side visor fell down on its own and blocked my visibility almost causing me to lose control of the vehicle because I could not see where I was going. The visor will not stay up in the locked position. I can see wires and a broken black plastic part where the visor support is located.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked or while driving, the contact smelled an abnormal exhaust odor, and there was a rattling sound coming from the exhaust manifolds. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 56,900.
I noticed the rear view window mouldings are cracked inside the cabin of my truck by the 3rd brake light. Everytime it rains or wash my vehicle it’s leaking water inside the cabin onto the back seat. I called the local dealer ship (empire Chrysler jeep ram dodge) and set an appointment to get it fixed under warranty. They made me wait two months after the warranty expire to be seen. Now both corporate and the dealership won’t cover the manufacture issue because my truck is out of the warranty. The rear view glass needs to be replaced in order to fix the issue. I do not have glass coverage, and I will not pay to get it replaced. I do not want mold growing inside the cave of my truck, making me and my family sick. I also had a case number with RAM customer care and they told me the same thing.
After pulling out of a parking lot, I was accelerating, probably between 30-40mph, and the transmission suddenly slipped into neutral. I had just merged into traffic and because of this defect in the transmission, my truck was sharply slowing down with several other vehicles behind and beside me. Thankfully I drove a manual transmission for years so I knew what was happening. I physically turned the gear selector to neutral and right back to drive and I was able to regain control. However, in that time, my speed probably decreased about 10mph. Had I been on a highway or in front of an inattentive driver, a serious accident could have occurred. After doing some research, I see this has happened to several other people with the same vehicle. I will definitely be taking my truck in this week. It’s still under warranty with about 23k miles.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the odor of exhaust fumes was present inside the cabin of the vehicle. Additionally, there was a loud exhaust sound while depressing the accelerator pedal. The local dealer was contacted. The local dealer stated that the failure was due to a crack in the passenger’s side exhaust manifold however, the parts needed to repair the vehicle were on backorder due to a high demand. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 43,000
The plastic stem that holds the driver side visor in place broke and the visor dropped obstructing driver visibility from the front windshield.
Back window leaks allowing water to seap in and build up mold/mildew under head liner. Dealer says this is a common problem with the ram and manufacturer won't cover after factory warranty. Manufacturer is aware of problem but won't recall or fix issue . Mold can cause a health risk if not detected early enough.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal sound coming from the exhaust on the passenger's side of the vehicle, and there was an abnormal ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact became aware there was exhaust fumes inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifolds were fractured. The manifolds were replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was not available.
Fuel tank malfunctions. It will not relieve pressure to fill up. Have to continually pump gas for a long time for it to fill the tank up. This has happened on multiple replacement tanks. Yes, it is available for inspection. My safety and others is put at risk because it allows gas to overflow while filling up with the automatic pump. Also due to having trouble putting fuel in it causing me to run out of fuel in the middle of traffic. This is the 3rd gas tank I've had on my dodge ram's that has had the same problem. This has happened on multiple Dodge Ram 1500's that I have owned. The component has only been inspected by the dealership when sent in for repair/replacement on each occasion. It has consistently shown to have this problem when the vehicle gets to about 40,000-70,000 miles on the vehicle. There are no warning signs or symptoms that show before it happens.
I was pulling into a parking spot of a gas station and the ball joint of my driver side tire completely broke off and the entire wheel fell off
The contact's brother owned a 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously driven parked and left unattended a few hours later, the vehicle spontaneously caught fire. The neighbors alerted the owner that the vehicle had caught fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and informed him the fire started in the engine compartment. A 2021 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 parked in front of the Ram caught fire as well. There were no reported injuries. A police report was filed. It was unknown if the air bags were deployed. The vehicle had burnt to the frame. The vehicle was still at the owner's residence. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, who informed me an adjuster would evaluate the vehicle damage. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000
The driver side sun visor failed at the attachment point, left side while driving at high speed on the local freeway, obstructing my view of the traffic ahead temporarily. There was no warning and the failure was completely unexpected.
While refueling my 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie with the large (33 gal) fuel tank, the fuel pump "vacuum-assisted automatic shutoff" or "nozzle shutoff mechanism" is triggered dozens of times prior to the tank actually reaching a full level. I have been experiencing this issue consistently for the past year and it has occurred, to the same degree, at each of the fill-ups conducted at a variety of gas stations during this time. I've had an independent service center diagnose the issue and they recommended I take it to a dealer for service and also report the issue because this has been a common issue they have seen. Other Ram 1500 owners on internet forums also report having had this issue. The safety issue is that gas may become trapped in a fuel system component where it shouldn't be collecting which exposes vehicle occupants to an increased risk of fire in the event of an accident. Furthermore, this condition makes it nearly impossible to know when the fuel tank is full because the shutoff mechanism is triggered many times prior to full. This results in over-filling the tank and possibly having fuel remain in the filler neck, which also unnecessarily increases the risk to vehicle occupants to fire or explosion if involved in an accident. Vehicle owner manuals and gas station pump warning stickers typically warn operators of the dangers of over-filling or "topping off" fuel tanks specifically for this reason. With the system not operating correctly, the risk of overfilling is severe and unsafe.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V767000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Rear sliding glass window does not close using OPEN/CLOSE toggle switch (it will open but not close). Dodge technician that looked at it stated the the bottom seal of the rear window had come unglued and was not allowing the window to stay on it's track while closing. As a result, the entire rear glass window had to be replaced.
I am having issues with water coming in on the driver side. Every time it rains it drips right where my break pedal is and makes is really slippery and completely floods the floor where the driver seat is. This is a safety issue if I am trying to break and the break is so slippery because water is constantly on the break pedal.
The contact owns a 2020 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the front driver’s side sun visor detached from the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the front driver’s side sun visor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, in July 2023, the passenger’s side sun visor detached. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,183.
The drivers-side Sunvisor keeps falling down randomly and dangles in way of line of sight to the road. It will not stay up. The safety issue is while driving in heavy traffic in Houston, TX the visor fell down obstructing my view and I almost crashed trying to keep the Visor Up with one hand and avoiding cars changing lanes. I did take my truck to the dealer and they told me it would cost $180 just to look at and then they would tell how much it would cost to fix. I feel this should be a Safety Matter and corrected free of charge. I looked on the internet and it seems there are a lot of problems with this same issue. There were not any warning lights before or after the visor would obstruck my vision.
Afraid of Potential "Black Mold" health exposure due to faulty construction/design/product allowing water to leak into the cab soaking and staining headliner, seats and rugs. The water is absorbed into the insulation and fabrics. Research has confirmed this issue has been reported for more than 15 years. 2020 Ram 1500 Bighorn. Had truck at dealer for issue. A few hundred mile out of warranty, and they would not repair without us paying out of pocket. We feel that Ram should cover this issue being so many of us Ram owners have the same issue
When turn I hear a rubbing grinding sound and the right front wheel shudders and vibrates when driving
My vehicle is a 2020 Ram/1500 BIG HORN/LONESTAR (with 5.7L HEMI - V8) My VIN is - [XXX] The Engine system failed/malfunctioned while driving on the highway. (It is currently available for inspection upon request.) I will however be taking the vehicle in for an engine rebuild and reinstall on or around May 30th, 2023. My safety and the safety of others was put great risk when my engine sputtered and vehicle rapidly slowed down on the freeway, during rush hour traffic; nearly causing rear end collision. Check Engine warning lamp came on and started flashing at the time of the failure, this was first time it happened. My vehicle was diagnosed from a mechanic/technician at Milosch's Palace Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Lake Orion, Michigan. The technician said that the engine failed due to issue with Cylinder #7 and will need to be replaced - at a cost of nearly $11,000. I did find a licensed repair facility that will do a complete engine removal, overhaul and rebuild including a 24 Month Warranty. According to the gentleman at the repair facility, this is a common issue, and they are on working rotation, repairing 12-15 HEMI Engines at any time due to this common failure. 5.7L HEMI Valve Train issues have been documented over and over; this is a known issue for many years. There have been several cases where HEMI engine owners have filed lawsuits against automobile manufacturer, alleging defects or performance issues with their engines. In some cases, these lawsuits have been successful in securing damages for the owners. I could provide you with some general examples. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The dash lights flicker on and off cluctser goes out speed o doesn't work and if u come to a complete stop or go under 5 miles an hour the truck will put itself in part and shut completely done no matter where u r at highway city in rush hour traffic it almost had my wife hit and could of gotten killed
The dash on my truck is bubbling. I have searched the internet and there seems to be hundreds of complaints of this happening on the new body style Ram. It sounds like a manufacturing issue and I believe should be a recall. It is $3,500 to get the dash replaced and it seems to be happening to a lot of people.
