NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 2500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Issue a recall here! Many others are reporting this identical issue and a class action suit has been filed! ABS sensor light and chime comes on at random times. My truck just reached 100,000 miles. I've performed no troubleshooting but it is extremely intermittent, either the Service the Automatic or Service the Electronic Braking System(s). Usually, a bump in the road makes it come and another turns it off. Sometimes it happens so quickly, only the message and traction control disabled light comes on, sometimes only the chime comes in. Sometimes the message stays up and the brake warning and traction control light comes on, sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes a couple of seconds. To compound the problem, there appears to be an issue in sourcing replacement parts resulting in a delay in repair. A delay in repair could result in a additional damage to the vehicle, not using the vehicle (not an option) or ultimately an accident. Also can’t use cruise control when it’s displaying.
I have called & been to Fletcher Chrysler in Franklin, IN and they said that there is still no remedy/fix for the brake recall on my vehicle. I use it to tow our 5th Wheel & am seriously worried about towing it in the Spring, as well as daily driving in around. It has now been 14 months and there still is no repair for this Recall issued in Nov 2024.
Nov 27,2024 Manufacturer Recall Number: C4B NHTSA Recall Number: 24V-896 Recall Status: Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available RAM unable to remedy this safety recall for my vehicle
ABS/ELECTRIC BRAKING SYSTEM LIGHT... HAD ABS PUMP MOTOR and HCU REPLACED 2 TIMES WITHIN 28 MONTHS AT MY COSTS..LESS THAN 60K ON ODOMETER
Abs module and pump motor need to be replaced but are on back order and can't be replaced. Vehicle is now unfit for operation.
ABS Light and traction conrol light started acting up. Brakes not currently sticking but will be sending for possible repair as this is a common trend with this vehichle from What I have reviewed online.
Abs pump intermittent light
I have read online that this is a common problem for Ram Trucks. The SEBS and ABS lights and alarm will start flashing and dinging- the result is Intermittent ABS and traction control lights, no cruise or 4x4. I have 38,000 miles. I spent approximately $1300 to have it repaired. When I was. At the Ram repair shop, I was told that the parking lot was full of similar Ram trucks with the same problem. So clearly there should be a recall.
Abs and traction control light error repeatedly after repair and replacement of abs and hsu module
Recurring ABS and traction light warning lights, with trouble code C0020 for the ABS pump control motor. Loss of function of ABS, traction control, and cruise control when it occurs. Truck has ~50k miles on it.
ABS and Traction Control lights have come on for the second time. First time at 100K miles the Hydraulic Module and Controller were replaced at my expense. Now at 153K miles the lights are coming on again. This is a habitual problem with this generation of RAM trucks and it's a safety issue for the following reasons: 1) the ABS system stops working 2) the traction control system stops working 3) the cruise control is unexpectedly turned off, which is a major concern, and 4) the 4x4 quits working which in the right circumstances can cause an accident.
The illumination of the ABS light and traction control light. The light actives intermittently. The reported problem from a vehicle code reader is “ ABS pump motor control general electrical failure”. With the lights illuminated, I am no longer able to use cruise control. Prior to the warning lights I noticed I was having to depress my brake pedal harder than normally at random times. No signs of brake fluid loss or leaks. The brake pads are in good working condition. I have not taken it to a dealer as I have read the replacement parts are on back order and there are multiple lawsuits pertaining to this issue as well.
I have a 2017 Ram 2500 6.4L. The ABS light is constantly on. At times it’s off then back on. Buying new parts for it does not fix it. I slid off a rainy road the other day due to this. Narrowly missing a vehicle. The brakes locked up. This is a safety concern. Please help. As far as I have found out there is no fix for this.
On November 9, 2022 I had the Control-Anti-Lock Breaking System repaired by Bob Moore Chrysler Dodge in Tulsa. They replaced the HCU and performed a base bleed of the brake and ABS breaking system. This repair was prompted by the vehicles ABS warning light and chimes activating during operation. As of September 3, 2024 the same ABS warning light and chime is again activating during operation. I paid $620.00 the first time to get this issued repaired and I do not feel that I should have to pay this again on a part/system that is obviously defective from the manufacture. My research into this issue shows this is a common issue on these models as well as a possible safety problem.
ABS / TRACTION CONTROL AS WELL AS SERVICE ABS SYSTEM. AT TIMES IT COMES AND GOES AND MOST TIMES NOW IT STAYS ON. DISABLES CRUISE CONTROL AND AT TIMES EVEN SAYS 4 WHEEL DRIVE UNAVAILABLE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MY YEAR MODEL RAM AND I'D LIKE TO REMEDY THIS ISSUE ASAP.
Antilock Brake System Warning and Traction Control lights on dash with associated warning chime. Was also given the warning that 4X4 is not available. The warning occurred on a return multi-day trip. The warning interrupted cruise control causing it to turn off and unable to reengage. After a brief fuel stop and the trip continued the warnings disappeared after a few miles. The warnings then reappeared with the associated disengagement on the cruise control. A few more stops were made and the warnings persisted never going out after restart. Reading forums on the internet seems to indicate this is a persistent issue with numerous reports the the NTSB. The Vehicle has approximately 75,000 mile and was place in service in early 2018.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the massage "Service ABS System" was displayed and an audible alarm was activated. Additionally, during the failure the cruise control feature had deactivated. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The contact indicated that the HCU was replaced on two previous occasions for the same failures, but eventually the failures reoccurred. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 61,000.
ABS & traction control brake failure light goes on and off as I’m driving. The ABS module was replaced around 30,000 and now it’s doing the same thing at 70,000. This is unsafe to be carrying heavy cargo and not being able to stop in time. Please issue a recall for RAM to fix this issue.
HCU/ABS modules have failed for the second time in 50K miles. While using Cruise Control at highways speed (70mph) in heavy traffic the warning lines and chime came on. At the same instance the truck started slowing down dramatically. Almost causing us to get rear ended. It was like slamming on the brakes, but without brake lights to warn cars behind me. I finally figured out it caused the Cruise Control to kick out. Now I am having to listen to the constant chirping of the chime. It even chimes when the truck is not moving!!! Let me ask this question.... Why is it that long ago NHTSA required Anti-Lock Brakes on all cars to improve safety? Yet, when that system has a systemic problem of failure on these trucks, it's no longer a safety related problem? Makes zero sense!!! I purchased this truck with 99K miles on it. These modules went out once approximately 10K miles later. Now I have 154K miles and they have gone out again. FCA is selling replacement modules but they are the exact same failed design. They are not only not fixing the issue, they are knowingly selling parts that have systemic and reoccurring safety failures. This is legally called blatant negligence...
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal went to the floorboard due to a lack of brake pressure. The vehicle stopped as expected; however, there was no resistance in the brake pedal. The traction control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who confirmed that the failure was related to the recall; however, the dealer was unable to perform the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and opened a case. The manufacturer instructed the contact to cease from driving the vehicle and to rent a vehicle until the part to do the recall repair was available. The manufacturer offered to reimburse the contact for the rental once the part became available to facilitate the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
It appears multiple people I know have the same issue with 2017 ram 2500 my truck included I have issues with my trucks ABS. I got a random code looked it up and says ABS pump motor control. It’s a danger to the public and my self truck suddenly gets that ABS light and emergency light turn on.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The ABS, traction control, and an unknown warning light were intermittently illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the hydraulic control unit was replaced prior to receiving the recall letter. However, the failure persisted. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Vehicle is displaying service abs and traction control. C-0020 and told to replace abs pump and hcu module. Ram has multiple issues with different year makes and models involving abs and recently recalled the new rams. Research has shown high numbers of issues involving the 2017 ram 2500 for this exact issue and ram also could not provide the recommended part to fix. Abs does not work which is required by the nhsta and ram has released defective vehicles for years. This issue needs to be included in a recall.
ABS failure code. Very inconsistent. Has been repaired yet still throws the code when it rains or hitting a bump. Frustrating
ABS and EBS keeps flashing on and off code said wheel bearing hubs , replaced them still happening
Abs light goes on and off intermittently. Caused my truck wheels to lock up in fast stop maneuver. Dealer said ABS module needs to be replaced but there is no recall yet.
ABS/traction control lights keep coming on due to something wrong in the ABS HCU and/or control module with fault code C0020. It is my understanding that almost all 2017/2018 2500s & 3500s are affected. This needs to be a recall.
ABS LIGHTS AND TRACTION CONTROL DASH LIGHTS INDICATE PROBLEM. ERROR CODE IS : ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM C0020-01 I am not protected from the anti-lock brake system that could potentially save my passengers and my life.I am no longer able to use cruise control as I paid for. online states parts are unavailable. Cost of fixing should be covered by manufacture as I have less than 40,000 miles on my truck and have it serviced regularly.
Dash warning lights service abs brakes and 4 wheel drive and cruise control doesn't work with the lights on. Mopar does not have the parts or nohow to fix this.
Cam shaft lobe rounded off, causing sudden loss of power and misfire on cylinder 7. The first time this happened there was no warning or signs of trouble. I was traveling at highway speeds and the vehicle violently shook and speed unexpectedly dropped. Had to limp the truck off the highway with choppy acceleration while the steering wheel shook. This could of easily caused a serious accident at highway speeds. The damaged cam shaft caused damage to cylinder 7. Cylinder 7 now has low compression. The check engine light is now on and the engine makes a ticking noise. The mechanic, Homestead Auto, ordered a rebuilt engine to replace the engine in my truck. Estimated delivery is several months. Estimated costs of repair is $8500. The truck with the damaged engine is available for inspection at my house. The vehicle has only been inspected by my mechanic at Homestead Auto. The mechanic said this is a well known and common problem with Hemi engines.
C0020-01-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL - GENERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE
ABS traction control keep flashing on and off due to hcu problem
The ABS sensor light and Anti Brake light warnings both suddenly came on. I was only way to have my tires rotated so they ran the tester on it and came up with code C0020-1. ABS motor pump control and General electrical failure. I did some searching and found that this happens a lot and there is not a consensus as to what causes it or how to fix it. Also references to a faulty part. I have the part numbers. They recommended that people having this issue report it to you.
The vehicle has an intermittent ABS TCS warning that Dodge refuses to recall and fix. The warning light goes off incessantly it should be a recall and Dodge has known about the problem for 7 years at a minimum.
This is preventative for myself but multiple others have been affected by this manufacturing issue. The factory grid heater has a bolt and stud on the bottom side of it. From heat and deterioration the bolt has a tendency to fall off, which then sends it through the intake manifold where it winds up inside cylinder #6. See these links for more information: [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ABS/HCU defect. Vehicle does not stop properly without ABS and parts arnt available. Warning chime will not clear and unsafe to drive.
Truck has had two ABS units replaced under warranty for the code C0020-01. Now a year after the last replacement the code has come back and needs the ABS unit replaced again. FCA knows there is an issue with these and continue to sell and install parts that they know will fail. This will cause the loss of ABS braking, traction control and trailer braking. Someone need to force FCA to provide a "correct" repair and ungraded parts for this error.
ABS and Traction control warning lights are on display. Cruise control and 4x4 will not engage due to this issue. Also causing malfunction while towing a trailer.
ABS module failure
When I have gone to slow down and try to stop, the vehicle has slide forward a fee times. I thought it was a little weird, but didn't think to much of it. After a while, my transmission started acting up as well. I will be driving down the road about 50-60mph and it will shift to 4th gear and not come out of 4th gear until stopped and shut off and restarted. I recently heard about the recall when I took my truck to the dealership that is close to where I am located at the moment. I decided to research about the recall and what could happen if that part fails. It showed me that if the recalled part fails, it will cause all the problems that is going on with my truck. I am a full-time rv'er and trailer the country pulling an rv everywhere I go. I am stuck where I am until my truck can be fixed of these problems. This is a major setback and a major financial burden to have to stay where I am until it is fixed. I am near Thomson, GA where I am waiting to have my vehicle fixed.
Service ABS Electronic Braking System Message, ABS as well as Traction Control light intermittently coming on and shutting off, Sometimes staying illuminated awhile then going back to coming on Intermittently. Took to shop and ran diagnostic trouble codes on truck. The trouble codes saying ABS/HCU Pump Module Electrical Failure. Recommended fix is to replace ABS Pump Module. I am aware of the class action lawsuit and this same issue on most all 2017-2018 Ram 2500 trucks. The problem I am presented with now is, The ABS Pump Module is on national back order which is making it extremely difficult to find a replacement. I am now left with a truck that is unsafe to drive as a father and husband due to the vehicles Antilocking Brake System not functioning at all as well as the Traction Control System not functioning at all. Due to these issues when I am forced to operate the truck for commute to and from work and day to day purposes I am now putting my family, myself and everyone on the road at risk as there is no immediate solution to the problem at hand. This is wildly unacceptable just as well as it is wrong in every aspect to be put in the position that I could possibly injure or kill another family on the road simply because this issue is going through political channels and I have not other option but to continue to operate the vehicle for day to day life.
Service ABS comes on and off randomly. When cruising at highway speeds, it causes the random shutdown of cruise control when not expecting it. This is very dangerous. Dealer states parts are on back order for years and they also state that it won’t fix the issue long term anyways. How has this issue not resulted in a safety recall!? I’ve read that thousands are plagued with this same exact issue.
Service EAS Braking, ABS warning lights intermittently appear.
Intermittent MIL stating ABS and TCS service required, started has been going on since I bought the truck in January 2023 at about 50k miles (currently about 75k). Often happens when driving over any sort of uneven terrain - bumps, potholes, seams between concrete and asphalt surfaces, milled asphalt surfaces, speed bumps, debris, etc. Dealer says the ABS module needs to be replaced, and that there are none available. With some research, this appears to be a common/known issue for Ram trucks, but no recall and no effort to even manufacture the part so it can be fixed, regardless who is stuck with the bill. When this light comes on, neither 4WD nor cruise control function, which can cause safety concerns - especially while towing.
ABS TRACTION LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF INTERMITTENT. Seems like every time I hit a bump.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the ABS module failure warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with ABS module failure. The contact was informed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
2017 Ram 2500 ABS Pump Module was replaced before at 33,549 miles in May 2021 ABS and TCS Lights keep coming on now again at less than 49,000 miles. This is not an uncommon problem it seems, so I am adding my incident.
Abs module in limp mode with 45k miles think they have a problem by the looks of all the people on forums that have the same issue. No ABS while this is faulting and they have no fix got to love it I feel so safe now driving around.
In July of 2020 my 2017 RAM 2500 ABS and Service Electronic Brakes warning lights began illuminating intermittently. My vehicle had 12,343 miles on the odometer at the time and was three years old. There was no noticeable change to the brake performance. The vehicle was brought into a RAM dealer for service which found code C0020-01 ABS Pump Motor Control-General Electrical Failure present with Starcase #S2005000004 instructing the replacement of the hydraulic control unit. This corrected the issue until August of 2024 when the above warning lights began illuminating again, intermittently, but in increasing frequency. The issue was diagnosed by a RAM dealer with the same code as above (C0020-1) and the recommendation to again replace the hydraulic control unit. My vehicle had 30,901 miles on the odometer at the time. The total for the service in 2020 was $984.89 and in 2024 $698.46 for the second replacement of a component within 5 years. Understanding that there was no recall ever issued, the ABS and Stability/ Traction control systems are designed to provide safety to vehicle occupants in heavy braking or loss of traction situations. While there was no noticeable difference in brake function, the presumption is that if there are warning lights activated, there is an unknown issue with the brake system which could result in brake failure. Further, the requirement to replace the same part twice in 30,000 miles at a total cost of $1,683.35 does not seem reasonable. Many owners have posted similar issues with this component with no apparent resolution other than to continue to replace the component when it fails. The component can be inspected, however it is currently installed on my vehicle.
ABS module unit replaced while under warranty. Vehicle again with ABS warning on/off intermittently for at least the last several months...regardless of weather, speed, road conditions, etc. Comes on and off while driving, sitting in a parking lot...pretty much as soon as I turn on the motor it starts...goes off again for several minutes/hours/days, then starts doing the blinking and dinging again for no reason. While traveling, it turns off cruise control and I have lost 4 wheel drive when I've desperately needed it. This vehicle is only used for long distance travel or during snow storms. This is a safety issue, in my opinion. Causes operational malfunction and causes driver distraction.
