NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 2500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I was pulling my gooseneck trailer with equipment on it and had to stop quick because car pulled out in front of me an when I pushed the brake pedal it was very hard to push an my exhaust brakes did not come on an I noticed check brakes light an anti trac light were both on.exhaust brake was turned on in full exhaust an exhaust light on dash showed it to be on but exhaust brakes did not start working so I had ended up leaving the highway an going through a ditch so I wouldn't hit the vehicle in front of me an hurting or killing someone or myself, luckily it wasn't a steep ditch so I was able to make it down to the service road down below without any injuries or damages to my truck or trailer or equipment, I've call several times once I recieved the recall notice about hydraulic brake problem on my truck an all they tell me is call back later no parts available to fix the recall problem, it's been a year now an still no parts,I haven't pulled my trailer since that happend and it's very inconvenient an costly not being comfortable about pulling trailer an not being able to stop,I very seldom drive the truck at all just to local store about a mile from the house, out in the country with none or little traffic, how long is ram going to be able to say no parts available, I think the government should tell them its been a year an you still haven't fixed the trucks they should have to buy them back an the higher average resale price or give us another truck.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the ABS and the traction control warning lights were illuminated, and an alarm had sounded. Additionally, the message "Service Brakes Soon" was displayed. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
"CHECK ABS SYSTEM" LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON/OFF. WHEN THE LIGHT IS ON EVERY TIME I HIT THE BRAKES IT CHIMES. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH 2017/2018 RAM 2500/3500 TRUCKS AND THAT THE ABS MODULE/PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT THEY HAVE BEEN ON BACK ORDER FOR OVER A YEAR. LOOKING ON THE INTERNET THERE ARE LOADS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND YET THERE IS NO RECALL. THE DEALER SAYS THAT I SHOULD "BE CAREFUL" DRIVING THE TRUCK AS THE ABS NOT WORKING COULD INCREASE STOPPING DISTANCE.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, the check engine, traction, and ABS warning lights illuminated. Once the warning lights had appeared, the speedometer, odometer, and cruise control functions failed to operate as needed. The contact also stated that the transmission failed to shift out park(P). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where a code reader determined that the failure was linked to the ABS control module. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue, and the contact was provided the same information as the dealer. The failure mileage was 153,777. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
On my truck my ABS and traction control light came on as well as a message that say to service ABS system. The parts are on back order for a year now. This problem has surfaced on many Ram 2500's. I contacted the dealer and they don't have parts to fix if. When driving in wet conditions especially while towing a trailer the wheels lock up while breaking. I've been towing going down hill and have had to use a combination of engine breaking, downshifting and feathering the brakes to slow down. Chrysler Fiat should issue a recall on this issue since it happens to many Ram 2500. This started when I had only 38k miles on my truck. Chrysler fiat has issued a recall for the 2019+ trucks but not the 2014-2018 which have the same exact problem. I'm hoping you can help this matter.
The ABS and electronic brake system service warning is going off. I scheduled an appointment and the Ram dealer and after inspection claims that HCU-ABS Hydraulic Control unit needs to be replaced. This seems to be a very common issue with the RAM 2017 2500 model.
Problem System: Antilock Brake System. ABS hydraulic control unit and ABS module were replaces due to dash warning lights "service antilock brake system." After aprox one year, the warning lights have started coming on intermittently. Sometimes the warning will activate and be consistent, and other times (usually in warmer, dry weather) the warning may occur once and go away for days or weeks. Sometimes it is constant for days. I paid over $1200 for my first repair and just received a similar quote to do it again. I know there have been many complaints about the RAM 2017 - 2018 ABS systems and I feel it's time the NHTSA pursue RAM and put some pressure on them to do something about this.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal was soft, and the vehicle failed to respond as needed. Several warning lights related to the braking system were illuminated. Additionally, the speedometer became inoperable. The contact drove to the residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ABS module had failed and needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 44,020.
Service ABS and service electric braking system lights intermittently present. When lights are on ABS and cruise control are inop.
The “service antilock brake system” code is appearing for the 4th time. I only have 64k miles on this truck. The CDJR dealer in Angleton, Tx has replaced the module and pump 3 times. Now it’s back. I’m sure it’ll all need replacing, again.
ABS and traction control module goes out every two years that leaves me driving unsafe vehicle. Need a recall on this 2017 . Please help!
The ABS module has failed. There aren’t any available across the entire United States in order to fix our vehicle. We have no ABS, no cruise control, no trailer brakes. We can’t get any help or answers from Ram. We have started a case with them and cannot even get a call back. The dealer cannot even order the part.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving 25-30 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal traveled down to the floorboard, but the vehicle failed to respond as needed, causing the braking distance to become extended. The ABS and the traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ABS module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.
abs light is on all the time traction control not working alarm is on the last time I ck at the dealer they had no parts
•abs pump motor control general electrical failure •no abs or traction control •yes has been confirmed on a professional scanner •no •no lights until it went bad again Replaced the and/hcu in October of 2020 due to the dtc c0020-01 and all was fixed until June of 2024 and now the same code is back. Not wanting to replace the same part again just for it to go bad in 2 years.
Abs module and pump goes on and off about to put the third one on the truck and only has 74,000 miles
Abs module and hcu failure. Must be replaced AGAIN.
Truck is flashing on and off the ABS light flashes on and off constantly turning off cruise control. Found code for problem C0020-01 ABS pump motor control - general electrical failure. This poses a danger when driving for ABS system to sporadically fail while driving.
ABS and traction control light flashing randomly. Causing cruise control to shut off randomly. Caused by faulty ABS modal, and or HCU. This is a know major issue with 2017 rams with parts not even currently available to fix.
I have code C0020-01-ABS Pump motor control on in my 2017 Ram 2500 for almost two years. I bought it used at a dealership in Maryland in June 2022 and each time I check with them, the part to fix it is backordered or not available. According to a Star online publication dated 4/28/20 from FCA, when this code is on the HCU and the ECU should be tested and replaced, but the abs module is on parts restriction. Also, NHTSA ODI (NEF-102ig PE22-012) sent a letter to Head, vehicle safety compliance FCA, on January 23, 2023, notifying them that NHTSA had opened a Preliminary Evaluation to investigate allegations of intermittent or permanent loss of braking performance in my truck type and year. I feel this is a severe safety Hazzard and a fix to repair should be immediately available, and a recall issued so the solution is free of charge to owners. At the time of the letter there were 134 reports, but can only imagine there are plenty more by now. Also, I’m sure there are thousands of owners who don’t know about this yet. Thank you.
Abs light comes on and disables the cruise controls. Says abs brake failure and I have researched this and found it is a common problem. 6 speed Transmission is turning on check engine light and says gear 5 and gear 6 has improper ratio. Shifts hard into gear5 and won't downshift for passing gear.
2017 Ram 2500 crew cab ABS light on know traction control light on will not engage in 4x4 because ABS light on Code said ABS C0020-01 ding, ding, ding, ding always.
Information screen on vehicle said "Service Anti Lock Braking System" the traction control and abs light come on and go out. The brakes seem to work fine. This started about May 20th of 2024 one time. This now June 16 2024 and it is happening very frequently. I have read that this is a common problem with this year and model truck. The vehicle hasn't been inspected at this date of writing.
ABS module failure. Replaced and failed again at about 19 months. Replaced again and failed at about 20 months. Review of chat lines shows numerous owners complaining about same problem. I just can’t keep replacing the ABS module every 1 to 2 years.
C0020-01 code, ABS control pump and electrical failure. This is second time since purchasing this truck new in 2017 that this has occurred. Parts are now on national back order with Ram taking no responsibility on covering costs of replacemenf on an item that shouldn’t be failing multiple times in the life of a vehicle. This is an ongoing problem with MANY Ram owners.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while an employee was driving at undisclosed speeds, there was a whining sound, and vibration coming from the brake pedal. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with drained power steering fluid and a hole in the power steering hose. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,250.
ABS HCU braking system failure common problem on these trucks but no safety recall. All these trucks have the same problem but no recall.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving 40–65 MPH, there was an abnormal chiming sound detected. The ABS warning light and service electronic braking system warning lights were illuminated and displayed. The contact called the local dealer, where an appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
Intermittent “service ABS system” light on dash resulting in loss of ABS, cruise control, park-sense, and 4x4. No amount of troubleshooting from a reputable diesel mechanic has been able to fix this. From what I have read online this is a very common issue and the truck likely needs an HCU/ABS module
For the second time, my truck is repeatedly having "Service electronic braking system" message appear and disappear constantly while driving. This is mixed with "Service ABS system" message that also repeatedly pops up with a audible ding. The warning lights for traction control and ABS repeatedly turn on and off as well. This happens over and over the entire time while driving. We were on a family trip with our 1 year old when this started again most recently. We had to turn back around, drive home and swap trucks and everything in them as we can not have potential brake failure with our 1 year old in the vehicle. The trucks has just over 51,000 miles and this is the second time this has happened. The first time the truck was under warranty, so it was "fixed" by the dealer. I am no longer under warranty. The part to replace is unavailable online, and from what I am reading may be on a national back order with the dealers (I left a message with my dealer who fixed this last time under warranty- have not received a return phone call yet) The last time this was fixed I was told it was the ABS HCU which was replaced. I have looked this up since and learned that this is a known/common issue for the 2017-2018 HD Rams.
ABS/ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM The service ABS/electric braking system /traction control lights and warning began to come on intermittently a couple months before taking it in for service. It was sporadic at first but eventually became more prevalent. This was unsafe as it would happen going on the highway at highway speeds pulling a trailer and the ABS would disable- as well as the cruise control and also the traction control. This could have caused a serious accident and put myself and family in danger. This was verified by the dealership- Junction Chrysler Dodge- the vehicle trouble code was C0020-01-ABSpump motor control General electrical failure. ABS/HCU were replaced.
TPMS light came on and will not reset. As a result I have lost the ability to engage the 4x4 system. The front axle actuator is electrically controlled and will no longer engage.
Abs traction control light on
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed turbocharger and that the turbocharger needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed transmission and cooling lines, and it was determined that the transmission and the cooling lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to report the failure to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 135,800.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds and towing a trailer, the gooseneck ball detached from the bed of the truck and the trailer disconnected from the vehicle. The contact was able to pull over safely. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18E028000 (Trailer Hitches). The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that there was no recall coverage for the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the ABS warning light was illuminated, and there was a grinding sound coming from the front and rear wheels as if the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the ABS module was failing, and the wheel bearings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to parts not being available. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who replaced the bearings with an aftermarket part. The failure reoccurred about a month later. The vehicle was returned to the mechanic, who replaced the front bearings a total of two times, the brakes were replaced once, and the front rotors were replaced once, but the failures persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Abs pump failure on a vehicle with 80k miles.
Brakes
2017 Ram 2500 the Antilock braking system failed resulting in erratic brake pedal at times difficult to stop. bought replacement parts online, had them installed, had same issue. then took it to the local dealer, they have had the truck for a week now, replaced all brakes, rotors, pads, master cylinder, still same issue, they think it's the ABS pump that I bought at the dealer two weeks ago. same with the module. now I am hearing possibly late June for good parts. I can't drive the truck in its current condition, I am spending $ 300.00 a week for a rental. this is unbelievable that they can't provide safe parts for the trucks. just plain nuts, please help
Anti-lock Brake System Hydraulic control unit - ABS Pump Motor Control-General Electrical Failure. C006A54 ABS no longer active, no 4x4 for snow travel, no cruise control. Failure occurred before 40,000 miles Failure is intermittent and affected by bumpy road conditions. These symptoms are consistent with the well known stuck motor brush issues. Ram does not sell a replacement motor, only the entire HCU
ABS brake system error ,brake module failure
CONTINUOUS ISSUES WITH ABS LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMING ON, AND STEERING NOT TURNING LEFT AT TIMES.
I bought my truck brand new in 2017. Two weeks ago my truck started intermittently flashing a brake warning as well as an audible alert. The screen says “service electronic braking system”. Also, when this happens, it shuts off my cruise control. Worrying me as the braking system is CRITICAL for daily use.
ABS module constantly going off and removes 4 wheel drive, parking assist, traction control, and and brakes
2017 Ram 2500 needs HCU and ABS modules dealer diagnosted the problem 2/29/24 parts are still not available to fix. I read there’s many of us with this problem it should be a recall, I shouldn’t have to pay $1635.00 to repair it.
I was entering an intersection on a green light when a car from the cross street entered from the right running a red light. I hit them at approximately 35-40 mph in the driver side doors. My airbags failed to deploy. The cab on my truck was shifted more than 2 inches off the frame and was a total loss since the original repair estimate was more than $43,000. The reporting firemen and paramedics and the repair shop all could not believe that the air bags did not deploy. My passenger and I are still suffering from injuries sustained in the accident, which are likely much worse because of the failure of the airbags to deploy.
ABS and traction control lights come on.
Intermittent service electronic brake system message/ABS system service required message on dashboard. Truck has less than 32,000 miles on it.
Vehicle: 2017 RAM 2500 6.7L Cummins purchased new in March 2018 with 300 miles on it from Phoenix, Arizona RAM dealership. RAM dealership in Kingman, Arizona states on [XXX], through a diagnostic examination of this vehicle on behalf of my insurance company and me, they do not know why the frame broke. USAA Insurance Claim: Filed on [XXX] and denied coverage on [XXX]. Safety issue: 15 minutes earlier I had been traveling on the highway at 70 mph. The insurance adjuster made a statement that if the frame had broken while I was on the highway traveling at 70 mph, I would have died. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ABS lights come on randomly and my cruise control and ABS fail while they are on. Dodge will not sell me the part to fix the issue even though it’s been a well known issue and even has a class action lawsuit filed. Part number they are regulating is 68347098AB. This is a major safe concern as my truck slid off the road this winter when this happened.
