NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Ram 2500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The ABS light and stabilizer light stay on along with the chime. It turns the cruise control off. The brake module/ABS/Hydraulic control unit is out and no parts and not going to be made per Ram dealers. This is a known issue with nothing done
ABS light and traction control lights are on and off with the service light on dash on and off. When the abs light and traction light comes on it also disables the cruse control to the off position. Performance is totally reduced ! Vehicle shows active code C0020 for ABS pump motor control general electric failure..Diagnostic issued said to replace the hydraulic control unit. The problem was inspected by the Ram dealer and was reproduced by the tech and is currently being repaired by the Ram dealer. We were notified the complete unit was not available and only the possibility of the control motor was available at this time at a cost of $1400 give or take. When the cruise control kicks out in traffic you go from the posted speed limit to 0 if not caught immediately. Mileage 53,500
ABS and traction control lights came on. Brought to my mechanic and they spoke with Dodge who started they put a freeze on selling the parts and currently have no fix.
Vehicle gives warning on the dash for ABS and anti skid off. Along with an audible warning. the warning on the dash states the anti lock brake system needs repaired. While this is active the cruise control does not work as well as the anti lock and anti skid system.
Abs light and braking system needs servicing and found out it is a common problem with Dodge Rams , scanner shows ABS pump motor control general electrical failure
Abs light and traction control warning light constantly coming on and off while driving and a warning sound playing every time the lights come on in the dash, which is very annoying and frustrating. The truck is under 30 000 miles and unfortunately is out of warranty. I don’t drive this truck very much and having this kind of problems with it is totally unacceptable.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with HECU unit and ABS module failures. The contact was informed that the HECU unit and the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the parts to repair the vehicle were on backorder. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Driving in normal conditions .. even leaving my driveway ABS light comes on and traction control light comes on. and flashes randomly. Sometimes in doesn't come on for a bit but then will flicker on and off.
The truck would not go above 40 mph, then the transmission began slipping, slowing the truck down to 20 mph. This happened while pulling my camper. This put us at risk of collision. The truck is going to the dealer on Weds, Aug 14. The vehicle has yet to be inspected, but will be at the dealer on Aug 14. No warning lights.
ABS braking Module and hydraulic control unit on this vehicle has been replaced under warrenty twice (in 2020 & 2022), vehicle now has 59K miles now and ABS has failed again, dash warnings are constant and cannot be turned off. Failed while driving from MO to FL last weekend
The "Service Electronic Braking System" warning comes on and off intermittently with an annoying "DING" while driving. It never stays on and always just comes on, DING, and goes away but repeatedly. It will eventually go away after driving a bit but then comes back unexpectedly. This also disables the Cruise Control. There are tons of complaints throughout the RAM forums and I see a lot of complaints filed here on NHTSA. The dealer is obviously very aware of the problem as the replacement parts are not available except for months of waiting, if at all. The dealership has not only stated the part is a long lead item and on back-order but it will be $1200 to $1600 for replacement and that part may fail as well!
Abs light comes on and off all the time. Randomly and hitting a bump. Code is c0020-01. The cruise control is disabled when this occurs. Also I assume abs would be disabled also. Took truck to dealer to look at. They tell me there is no engineering fix at this time for this issue and no parts available. Upon research online looks to be a common problem that RAM has. There is an issue with pump motor electrical brushes making contact which causes this issue. Truck is a fairly low mile truck.
My 2018 Ram 2500 has Service Electronic Breaking System and Service Antilock break System, along with the traction control light coming on and off intermittently and will stay on for days the cut off and back on and off. I had a close call when a vehicle slammed on breaks in front of me (who knows why, it could have been a small child in the road) as I pressed the break pedal my breaks locked up and almost slid into the opposite lane. Thankfully the condition where dry and I had just put new tires on the truck. I took the truck to the Ram dealership in Jacksonville NC, and was told the ABS/HCU PUMP HAS INTERNAL FAULT AND PUMP MOTOR FAILURE. The part was on national backorder with no ETA and have been asking for updates for what seems like over a year and the same answer; under investigation and still on back order.... my family and I are on a nerve racking (due to dinging and flashing lights on the dash) road trip from GA to NE. I almost forgot to mention we are unable to use the cruise control functions due to the ABS/HCU/Traction control issues.. I understand there may be a class action lawsuit for this year make and model... What will it take to get an actual recall on these issues? Serious injuries, death? This should fall under the Lemon Law Act. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ABS and Traction control lights illuminated at 38000 miles. Cruise control no longer functions either. Diagnostic scan indicates code C0020-01.
ABS and Electronic braking system error. Traction control not working due to system malfunction.
The ABS light keeps coming on/off when I’m driving saying service the abs module or the equipment.. I did some research about it alot people complain about this problem.
Abs not functioning. Multiple online forums with complaints for faulty abs module and pump. Abs pump not working. Scanner will not communicate with abs. 2017-2018 Ram 2500 very common known issue.
ABS and traction control modules randomly deactivate leaving 20,000 LBS of truck and trailer without the ABS and traction control system to aid in emergency stopping. This is A KNOWN ISSUE to Ram who refuses to acknowledge and properly recall and provide replacement parts on some of the most heavily used tow vehicles.
whilst driving, the ABS/traction control warning lights will randomly come on, then go off, and come on again. Sometimes they stay off, other times it is constant dingining as the lights appear and disappear, then re appear. when they are on the traction Control, and ABS do not work. I feel the truck is unsafe in incliment weather, or panic sitiuations that require emergency braking, or slick conditions where Traction and stabili track is important.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, an alarm sounded, the message "Service ABS System Required" and an unknown message was displayed while driving, causing the 4-WD and cruise control mode to become inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the HCU had failed. The vehicle was later taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the failure was related to the recall. The dealer informed the contact that the repair would be out of pocket because parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer to determine whether the vehicle was drivable. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
KEEPS FLASHING ABS. IT SOUNDS A BING NOISE THE WHOLE TIME I DRIVE IT. SINCE I DRIVE OVER 2 HOURS A DAY IT IS REALLY FRUSTRATING AND 5 HOURS ON THE WEEKEND. ALSO, THE RADIO CUTS OUT ALL THE TIME WHEN THE ABS IN FLASHING THE AIR CONDITIONING OR HEAT GOES FULL BLAST WHEN THE ABS IN FLASHING AND BINGING. HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE A FIX FOR THIS YET! I PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR THIS TRUCK AND IT IS THE BIGGEST [XXX] RIGHT NOW!!! I REALLY WANT AN ANSWER ASAP!!! BEFORE I HIRE AN ATTORNEY TO SUE CHRYSLER/DODGE. The hydraulic control unit (HCU) ABS went out on my 2018 Dodge 2500 truck late summer of 2024. I took it to the dealership and they told me it would cost over $2000 to fix but they couldn't get the part and that I should drive carefully. Then in January 2025 I received the recall notice that said part wasn't available so I got on the list to be notified when available. I periodically called the dealership to see if it was available. On February 4, 2026 I filed a complaint on Dodge's website. As of today, April 16, 2026 there has been no response and the part is still not available. They have had over a year to get this resolved so I'm filing this complaint with NHTSA. I want my truck fixed please. Recall # 24V-896.
Over the course of 30+ days the ABS indicator light would appear intermittently. We took our vehicle to a local mechanic. The code was run, and it was determined it was code number C0020-01 ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL ELECTRIC FAILURE, which recommended we replace the hydraulic control unit. The repair was not completed, and we contacted the local dealership to file and RO. It’s not a warranty repair. They suggested calling Chrysler directly who admitted lots of customers are calling for this issue; however, it’s not a recall repair at this point. This issue is causing failed ABS patterns during weather conditions or faults while the light is active. It’s a safety issue and could cause rollover on a vehicle that is already large and has higher potential for this issue.
ABS notification light and traction control light keep beeping.
2018 ram 2500, abs and traction control light came on and front driverside brake locked up cause me to lose control of the truck. Almost hit 2 other vehicles. Now there's a loud grinding noise and seems to be not drivable. Vehicle was towed to my local dealer this morning 7-29-24 (kendall jeep ram chrysler). Was told by a service advisor that I could possibly be a faulty abs module but they do not have any available diesel technicians available to diagnose at the moment. Might be serval days or weeks before they can troubleshoot.
ABS Hydraulic Control Unit failed as it has done on millions of other rams. Yes I will keep the old part incase someone needs proof. Cruise control does not work. ABS and traction control also does not work posing all sorts of possibilities for accidents. Independent service center No but the manufacturer knows its an issue. The dealers can only order 1 unit every 7 days. Every dealer in the area is out of stock or has units on the shelf already assigned to other vehicles. Multiple Warning lights come and go on the dash as well as a ding to distract you. "service anti lock brake system" illuminates on the console.
Abs control module & HCU module not working properly. Ram brand knows about these problematic modules on the 2014-2018 rams trucks. Now, I can’t drive my truck since Ram fixes this issue.
While driving the abs warning light will flash on then clear after a few seconds. It will do this several times while driving. Sometimes it will stay on for several minutes. When the warning is on the cruse control and exhaust brakes no longer work. It seems this may be a problem with the pump.
ABS Pump failure: First occurrence July 18 2022. Mileage 24268 ABS pump replace under warranty by dealership. Second occurrence: July 23 2024 Mileage 45907 ABS pump not replaced as of yet, parts out of warranty by one week. OEM warranty out by 25 months. I am the original owner and this vehicle has been gently used and not abused. The ABS pump failure, two occasions, of a part which should be have a life expectance of 100,000 miles, minimum.. Two failures at less than 50K miles in my mind is not acceptable, especially with a safety related part. From the research I have done, additionally talking with other owners and dealership technicians, this is a common problem especially with the 2017 - 2018 year model vehicles. Something should be done to rectify this issue.

The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the contact observed a warning notification alert and flashing ABS and Traction Control warning lights. Additionally, the "Service Electronic Braking System" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that a repair for the vehicle had not yet been developed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
Anti lock brake module repetitively fails. First one replaced 7/2021 with 51,xxx miles. Second failed 7/2024 with 69,000 miles. Loses ABS system, cruise control, electronics affect electronic throttle and stabilitrack.
ABS and Traction control warnings intermittently go off and sometimes stay on for a while. This causes the truck to not have abs and traction control. Had a bucking issues sliding down a boat ramp yesterday. Truck is under 40,000 miles. This is a well known issue for years now.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH, the ABS inadvertently activated. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled with the ABS warning light activated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 37,000.
Intermittent ABS brake error code C0020 - "Recirculation pump general electrical failure". This error occurs then clears within seconds while normal driving. No special weather conditions, road conditions or temperatures noted. May drive 5 miles, 50 miles or 500 miles before error occurs again. Only 6150 miles on vehicle. Repair parts scarce or not available.
Driving on interstate highway with cruise control engaged. Experienced rapid deceleration as cruise control disengaged without driver input. Received anti-lock braking error / service electronic braking system error. Was very dangerous situation to have occur unexpectedly and could have easily resulted in rear end collision or loss of control of vehicle. Received no warning prior to this failure. Issue has been sporadic but occurring more frequently. Vehicle has less effective braking in adverse road conditions. Never know when the anti lock brake system will be functional. A bump or vibration in the road can cause it to engage or disengage. Ram dealer service dept indicates Hydraulic Control Unit needs to be replaced. Looking online, I see this is an exceptionally common occurence in same year/make vehicles. So much so that the replacement part is backordered for months.
Warning lights for ABS and traction control coming on with message to 'Service Electronic Braking System'. During this time the ABS does not work and cruise control stops working. Being a 2500 vehicle, it is commonly used for towing trailers as it has a towing capacity up to ~16K lbs. Suddenly not having ABS and traction control is dangerous. In July 2024 I was driving from Phoenix, AZ to East Texas with a ~10K lbs trailer and this issue suddenly started popping up. This is the first time I experienced this with this vehicle. I understand there is a known issue with the hydraulic control unit and the ABS modules for 2017-2018 2500 & 3500 models yet there has been no recall on these vehicles.
I have replaced the HPU 2x's and currently the ABS warning light comes on. I have a RAM case #86697757. This is going on for a year and the dealer says parts are unavailable for repair. The truck has 24,000 miles on it.
ABS lights flash on and off while driving constantly. Affects concentration and cruise control. Radio will randomly start pressing all over the screen changing settings and distracting the driver.
ABS /Traction Control warning chimes and lamps providing erratic behavior and constant noise/distraction. In doing some basic research, this is a known issue for these trucks.
Anti-lock brake and Traction Control System warning lights flashing on and off intermittently It is available for inspection Problem has been reported Safety at risk due to anti lock brake system failure Vehicle has not been inspected Warning lights are intermittent
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The contact stated that on several occasions while starting or driving, the messages "Service ABS”, “Service ESC”, and “Traction Control Fault" were displayed for ten seconds with an audible chime. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 13,000.
Abs light and traction control keep flashing codes on and off. I lose my abs abillities which is extremely dangerous my family. I am told by griffin motors in meadville PA that it is the HCU. They have no part available to fix.
Abs and traction disabled randomly while driving.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted; however, the failure recurred. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. The VIN was not available.
Several systems suddenly were disabled, ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Front & Rear Park sensors, Tire Monitor system as well as the cruise control that may not be considered safety. The truck only as 11K miles. I have not been able to reset the system and the noted systems are inactive. I will contact the dealership but am bracing for a less than supportive meeting. From what I've read this is a very common failure on this year and model truck
Vehicles anti-lock brake, traction control systems become inoperable. Automaker is aware of the HCU and ABS defect, they have failed to recall affected vehicles or offer another remedy. Braking becomes much more difficult and a ram pickup becomes tougher to control without these systems, especially in dangerous road conditions caused by rain.
July 11, 2024 Message alert appeared indash with instructions to service ABS system. This vehicle experienced the exact same issue in April of 2022 and was taken to the dealer(Patterson Dodge-Tyler,TX) for repair, where the ABS Module was replaced. The replacement was not covered by the warranty.
Abs system failed and had to brake hard causing the wheels to lock up and lose control of the truck ,lost speedometer, brake lights, 4x4,cc,trailer brakes
The ABS system module has failed leaving me with a large truck and no anti-lock brakes or stability control. This is a known issue on my truck (I found out on line) putting people in danger. The parts are back-ordered and they want $2300 to fix it. My truck has <60K miles on it. The warning lights are on and the dealer told me to just "pump my brakes" if the lock up - like "in the old days before abs." Please make them issue and recall. This is very unsafe.
