NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Ram 2500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Data synced from NHTSA on May 4, 2026
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the ABS and traction control warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed failures with the hydraulic control unit and the ABS control module. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.
The “Service anti-lock brakes” indicator comes on constantly. It is unknown whether there is a problem with the brakes. The replacement part is on back order and appears to be months behind
ABS light came on several months ago. Trusted local diesel mechanic tells us it's a common problem with 2018 RAM trucks and it will cost minimum $2000.00-$4000.00 to fix. A visit to the local RAM dealership in January 2024 advised us that RAM will not have the part available until at least June 2024 and that the fix would 100% be our cost and not covered by any kind of warranty.
The ABS Light is on and my ABS braking system on my 2018 RAM 2500 doesn't work. I drive on icy roads for at least 6 months out of the year. I need to have the ABS working on my vehicle so I can stop on icy or wet roads and not cause an accident. I scanned the code C0020-01(ABS Pump Motor Control - General Electrical Failure) using my Innova 6100P scan tool. The problem first occurred on [XXX]. RAM wants over $1,000 to replace the defective component. Dishman Dodge/Ram in Spokane, WA has confirmed this problem with their scan tool. My 2018 RAM 2500 is available for inspection upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Service braking locking system. Intermittent ping of of abs/ebs traction control display lights. Cruise control will not work and shut off when this has been activated.
62,000 miles, "service anti-lock brake system" and "service traction control system" lights are on, no ABS, no traction control and no cruise control.
ABS control module is malfunctioning for the second time. Was replaced at approximately 25000 miles. Now is failing again at 48000 miles. ABS braking and traction control is affected.
I get an error message on the dash that says "service electronic braking system" and "service ABS”. Ram dealer has stated that the truck needs a new ABS modular and ABS pump but the parts are on back order until February through Chrysler.
The hydraulic control unit (HCU) of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is defective (part number 68143491AA). Without warning the defective HCU will cause the ABS and or cruise control to shut off. If this happens during hard braking, on slippery terrain or in heavy traffic, it could cause an accident. The indications the system is having a problem are warning messages on the dash display, which is great, but the warnings goes on and off for no apparent reason (does not stay on). This can happen at any speed. I replaced my HCU with the same part number (68143491AA) approximately one year ago. This corrected the problem until a couple of weeks ago when the same indicators started again. After a lot of research (Google, Ram heavy duty and Power Wagon forums) I came across one post that discussed how a brush in the motor for the HCU can become stuck, failing to maintain electrical contact with the motor windings. With nothing to lose, I decided to pull the motor off my HCU and take it apart. Once apart, I did determine that one of the brushes was in fact stuck. I am not sure if the brush became stuck just because of dirt or if the metal body the brush slides in was crimped too tight (could be a combination of both). I was able to free up the brush and put the motor back together; the motor functioned properly when bench tested. Unfortunately, I have not been able to reinsert the motor back into the HCU body (plungers are in the way and need to be compressed). I do not know if this requires a special tool, and my research has not come up with anything. Ram has apparently corrected the problem with an updated part, part number 68143491AB. Unfortunately, I cannot find anyone that has this new part in stock. As this is a safety issue affecting a lot of Ram trucks (check the forums and you will find a lot of people discussing the issue, so this is probably way underreported to the NHTSA), Ram should replace all 68143491AA with 68143491AB under a recall.
My truck has 32000 miles on it. Its just out of warranty and the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit is out again. This will be the third HCU put into my truck. This is a known problem from Ram and it has never been addressed. NHTSA please have RAM make it right and fix the problem so costumers are not spending 1500.00 every 15,000 miles.
ABS / TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ON IN THE DASH. CRUISE CONTROL INOP. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE, IN FACT 2019-2022 TRUCK HAD A RECALL ISSUED. RAM NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS SAFETY ISSUE
On or about September 2023 this vehicle, with 94k miles, has had its 2nd ABS/HBU failure. This causing the ABS and traction control lights to flash on and off with audible alarm then continuous illumination. We as a consumer buy these heavy duty vehicles to use for pulling trailers and heavy loads, It is no longer safe to do this when there is an imminent threat of brake failure. This can cause the consumer to be out financially in many ways. This component was previously inspected and replaced in 2020, with roughly 20k miles, by the dealer I purchased the truck from. Currently I have been unsuccessful locating and OEM replacement part causing the vehicle to be parked. This is a well known and documented issue on 17-18 Ram 2500-3500 heavy duty trucks that the consumer would like remedied for the safety of themselves, their families and others on the road around them.
ABS light and traction control light continues to be on. Disables the 4wd drive. No traction control
Hydraulic control unit failed causing abs and traction control lights to intermittently flash on and off. Dealer says replacement parts are discontinued and not available until at least February.
ABS and/or traction control lights turning on intermittently while driving, This is the 3rd time it has happened to me on this truck.
ABS Module Failure. Truck is available for inspection upon request. The ABS Module Failure directly effects the safety of all occupants and other vehicles on the road if not able to stop as intended to. The problem is confirmed by a dealer. There were no warning lamps until the ABS Module failed and needs to be replaced. This is a standard issue that needs to be recalled.
Intermittent “service brake system” comes on. Spoke to dealership and said they do not have the part to fix the brake system. It is on back order being “re-engineered” and have no indication when it will become available.
Got a code for service abs system, abs module pump bad. Ram cannot even get people in to fix the issue and they want like 2000 dollars out the door to fix this unsafe issue. I also have no cruise control now and no abs. This is an absolute shame that my truck only has 66k mostly highway miles and is now worthless because I cannot afford to fix it. Ram will not fix this issue under warranty. There is a current lawsuit under James Neu vs. Fiat Chrysler to get them to make this a warranty issue and fix it. Please please please release the recall so we can get our trucks fixed! Thousands of trucks are affected and at risk of accident. Thankyou please let me know if there is any hope in the future of this recall. I don’t know if I should just wait it out or get rid of the truck [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ABS/HCU is a known issue for failure. Mine is intermittently flash alerts for service/problems. 1000’s of people are having these issues. Where is the recall? This is a safety issue, is it not.
I have replaced the ABS/HCU 2 times as of 1/1/2024. I am currently waiting for the 3rd one. The ABS system is unreliable and dangerous during the time of waiting for parts availability. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle in 10/2023 and has been unable to get parts to repair the problem.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30 MPH, the ABS warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer for a routine maintenance check, and it was diagnosed and determined that the ABS and Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) needed to be replaced; however, the local dealer did not have the parts to do the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,914.
Over the last several months my 2018 Ram 2500 is experiencing intermittent service abs traction control system issue. The lights on the dashboard will go on and off and it will "ding" when it does. I am very concerned from a safety stand point as I know this system is supposed to help with braking in an emergency and assist with keeping the vehicle under control in adverse road conditions. The truck only has 35,700 miles on it now. I have taken it to the dealership and they are not able to read any trouble codes. Thank you for any assistance with getting this corrected. Ram needs to recall this issue as I have done some research and have found this to be a very common problem with this year make and model vehicle.
For 8 Months, I have had the ABS, Traction Control, and Service Electronic Braking System Lights/Messages illuminated, with endless warning chimes while driving. Anchorage Chrysler has had the truck in 4 separate times - finally troubleshooting the issue to a defective ABS/HCU component on [XXX]. I was told that replacement parts would be available by July 2024. On [XXX] I called to check on the parts. I was told that all ordered parts for this issue are blocked. Now, they want me to bring in the truck again so that technicians can verify “Step 6” pass/fail. At that point, a part could be ordered. This problem started in Sep 2023, and I drove this truck all winter in Alaska without anti-lock brakes. The brakes operate like vehicles without ABS, and will lock up if depressed too hard. There is a class action lawsuit concerning this problem out of California, but they wouldn’t let me join due to my living in Alaska. This should be a safety recall. I have been told 4 different stories on how this will be fixed over the past 8 months. Every time I check on the status of my parts - they have come up with other things to check before parts will be released. I have a 2018 Ram 2500, purchased new in 2019 and have 25,000 miles on this vehicle. I have been more than patient. When new directives come out, the dealership doesn’t even contact the customers that are waiting on parts. Like I stated earlier, I called to check on my ABS/HCU that was supposed to be available NLT July 2024, and that’s when I was notified I needed to schedule another appointment so they can verify the results of “Step 6” before parts will be released. They should have contacted all customers with these issues as soon as the message came out - but they didn’t. They wait for you to call and check the status, and then give you the news that it requires more troubleshooting. This is totally unacceptable. How much worse does a problem have to be before a recall is issued? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ABS and Traction light on dash. Chiming of alarm. This alarm turns off cruise control and feels like it applies the brakes at 70 mph. Lots of brake dust accumulating on my rims. It happens some days but not every day. Some days there is a constant alarm chime and cruise won't activate. On 10/24/23, parts weren't scheduled to be released until February 2024. Charged over $100 diagnostic fee for the ABS, traction control lights on the dash. By looking at other reports, this has been an issue for several years. They have known for over 2 years that there is an issue. Why is it taking so long to get a fix in place? ABS is a safety system. This should be a recall. The recall should cover replacing the brake pads and rotors also.
The ABS system in my truck has failed 2 times in the past 2 years. The ABS module failed at 36,000 miles was replaced in fall 2021 with a "updated" AB part number. Less than 2 years later in the fall of 2023 the ABS failed again at 60,000 miles. At this time I was told that the replacement parts were not available until march 2024. Parts availability has been pushed back and I have no idea when they will become available. I am left with a vehicle that has no function ABS system, stability control or cruise control.
Service ABS light on dash comes in every few seconds while driving. When this happens cruise control shuts off and ABS system does not work. The issue started happening with about 45,000 miles on the truck.
The ABS brake warning lights are on all the time. I have no cruise control. There are times when I can't even shift my vehicle into gear. I will be checking to see if I even have 4wd with this light on. But, haven't tried it since the lights have been on.
My ABS and traction control lights keep coming on intermittently with a message saying service electronic brake system and anti-lock braking system.
ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ON. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE RAM 2500 YEARS 17-18. I PULL A TOY HAULER WITH 2 MOTORCYCLES IN IT. THIS IS A 28 FOOT TRAILER. I DID NOT NOT GET IN AN ACCIDENT BUT I HAVE NO TRACTION CONTROL OR ABS AT THIS MOMENT. TIRES WILL SPIN VERY EASILY IN THIS TRUCK IN THE RAIN. HAD THE BACK END STEP OUT LEAVING WORK CROSSING TRAFFIC AS I HAD NO ABS INTERVENTION AND IT WAS COMING OFF OF A BIG HILL. THE DEALER SHOULD BE COVERING THIS. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND WAS TOLD THE ABS UNITS ARE ON BACK ORDER TILL FEBRUARY WHICH MAKES PERFECT SINCE BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL FAILING. HOPEFULLY BY THE TIME I HAVE MY APPOINTMENT THIS WILL BE COVERED AFTER READING ABOUT THE LAWSUIT AGAINST THEM. APPARENTLY THEY RECALLED THE 19-22 VEHICLES FOR THE SAME ISSUE.
ABS light and traction control light are coming on. Causing excessive dinging and cruise control not working. Also experienced flat spotting on my tires.
ABS TRACTION CONTROL BRAKING ISSUES AND DANGER. ONLY HAS 24K MILES GARAGE KEPT
Same part needing replaced for the third time (control anti lock brake system 6814349AA) at 12k miles 28k miles now at 42k. Asked if this is a common issue and ramcare adviser said that he didn’t know but found a lot of info on similar issues and advised to file a report
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the ABS and stability control warning lights illuminated and flashed on and off. There was an abnormal dinging sound heard. The cruise control became inoperable. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the vehicle had displayed DTC Code: C0020-01. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
I purchased my vehicle on 6/25/2019. At 951 miles on 5/11/20 my ABS system went out and was replaced under warranty. At 11917 miles on 9/17/21 my ABS system went out again and was replaced under warranty. Now at 37605 miles my truck is intermittently having my ABS system going out which eventually it has gone into total failure. My truck is now out of warranty.
38k miles ABS Unit has been replaced along w hydraulic pump. Just over 2 yrs 20k miles it’s out again! This is a know problem and they will not take responsibility for it! What has to happen someone die because of the ABs failure?
ABS/TRACTION CONTROL, 2ND TIME in 55K MILES. 1ST SET REPLACED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANY. NOW PARTS UNDER DESIGN REVIEW - UNAVAILABLE. I NOW HAVE NO ABS/TRACTION CONTROL! HELLPPPP
See attached document for complaint.
C0020-01-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL - GENERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE
While driving on interstate, Abs system went out, and as a consequence, the cruiser control also failed unexpectedly. Vehicle has less than 60,000 miles on odometer. Per review of this issue on the web, there is currently a class action lawsuit against Stellantis regarding this particular issue. Moreover, there is plenty of data to suggest that replacement parts also fail in short order…within the warranty period of the part. Problem was reproduced…problem was recurrent…problem was verified…by dealer. Warning caution messages were presented on the instrument cluster. Dealer ordered replacement HCU (hydraulic control unit). In the interim, dealer said vehicle was safe to drive. The very next day after picking truck up from dealer…while waiting for HCU part to arrive and be installed….By sheer coincidence, or directly related, I lost almost all brake pressure within 3 weeks of first receiving the abs fail message…while driving on the interstate. I didnt know of the diminished braking until I began to exit the interstate at high speed. Very, very dangerous situation….brake pedal to the floor…and much distance required to get the truck to a stop. Fortunately, no other vehicle was in my path as I tried to get the truck slowed and stopped.
ABS and traction control lights on at 35K miles. Result is less responsive braking. Has only been driven in dry conditions since occurrence. Repair has not been completed yet. Contacted manufacturer and will not compensate for repairs as vehicle is out of warranty. The contact wanted to include the error code shown on their vehicle - C0020-01: ABS Pump Motor Control - General Electrical Failure.
ABS Pump Motor Control - General Electrical Failure, code C0020-01, needs to be replaced. A critical item. Part is not available. I live full time in my 5th Wheel 40’ RV. Part may be under some engineering review due to failures. I need new part asap. No dealer has them. Truck is grounded.
ABS light and traction control light came on. Upon scan tool the code was general electrical failure of ABS system. I call my local ram dealer and they inform me of multiple failures of the HCU on 2017 and 2018 ram trucks. This is a safety hazard for my self, my family, and others. Theis desperately needs to be a recall on the ram trucks. This is very dangerous. Also the ram dealer talks of at least a 6 month lead time for this part.
ABS warning lights came on took the truck back to the dealer (approx 54000 miles) replaced abs pump unit and would not cover under warranty as it was out due to miles. Now again at 108000 I am getting abs warning and electronic brake system warning This is clearly a repetitive brake safety issue and a recall should be enacted
Failure of the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit) and ABS module. Caused loss of ABS system, Electronics Stability Control system, Electronic braking system, cruise control. Messages appeared on dash. All associated warning lights illuminated. Dealer stated this is a known problem and parts have been on backorder.
ABS & Traction control light keeps coming on. Believe this is a safety issue. My research has shown this to be a major problem with vehicles like mine and the parts are not available. My family and I use this vehicle to tow a camper and I feel that the manufacturer should issue a recall and repair since this is a known safety issue. This started approximately one month ago and is continuing to get worse.
Received a service ABS anti-lock braking system. Seems to be the HCU part #68143491-AB or module part #68347098ab
ABS brake failure/ loss of anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and traction control
ABS warning light goes on and off at intermittent times. Message says service ABS brake system. This truck has not been inspected yet but there is a class action lawsuit and NHTSA investigation on-going for this problem.
Truck is a 2018 Ram 2500 6.7l Diesel Cummins with ~80,000 miles. ABS System Pump Issue. Began around August of 2023 and randomly shows error codes and warning lamps. It is getting progressively worse/more frequent as of today January 9, 2024. Warnings lights for ABS and Traction Control come on and off during drive cycles randomly. This has made driving in wet or icy conditions dangerous for me and my family due to loss of traction control and the inability for the ABS system to safely stop the truck in wet or icy conditions. Error codes have been confirmed with a code reader "C0020 - ABS Recirculation Pump – General Electrical Failure"
Abs system lights keep coming on even without system needing fixed.
