Data synced from NHTSA on May 4, 2026
intermittent abs system failure, turning off cruise control and and traction control. system failure began at about 11,000 miles and 3.5 years of ownership
ABS and HCU module failure on a vehicle with less than 50,000 miles on it following all maintenance intervals and instructions. Results in traction control and automatic emergency braking not working as intended. Parts are backordered until January at the earliest, and will be over $1k after labor.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the ABS and service electronic brake system warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit (HCU) needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 35,000.
Abs on off messing with cruise control. In snow conditions feel it’s a concern. Sometimes the abs work’s most of the time it’s on/off multiple times while driving. For a 2018 truck with only a little over 24,000 miles not happy that at this time the dealership says they have no clue when they will have parts to fix
ABS & Traction Control System lights began flashing intermittently, then remain lit. Loss of ABS system control and cruise control. Dealer in Brookhaven, MS diagnosed faulty HCU as the issue in October 2022. As of 1/31/23, HCU is still on back order, resulting in loss if use of my vehicle for nearly 4 months. I use my truck to support my small business, so hardship is mounting.
My ABS and traction control lights came on my dash. It gave a message to service electronic brakes. The lights would come on, followed by an audible ding. Then it would go off, again with an audible ding. On, and off, on and off again. Sometimes it will stay on, some times it’s intermittent. It happens under all conditions, start up/running at temp, bumps/level roads, during braking/driving at speeds, and in wet/dry roads. The only performance issues I’ve clearly noticed is the traction control not working on wet grass. I’ve had to use four wheel drive to get out of the situation. I’m questioning the safety of my vehicle at this point. I have been researching and see that this is a highly discussed issue and a known issue, and has parts availability issues. I saw where NHTSA had opened an investigation, so I wanted to report that it is also a problem for me. I plan on contacting the dealership this week.
ABS Control Module failed and was replaced with part #68143491AB. Truck was purchased for plowing. Without anti-lock breaks and traction control, myself and passengers were at risk , and my ability to plow more than a few inches of snow was nearly impossible. Living on a dead end private road, plowing for neighbors to access main roads was not possible, putting neighbors and family at risk during winter emergencies. The part was back ordered for several months, delaying the repair and extending risks. The vehicle did provide an alarm to audio alarm of this problem which was a distraction throughout the part backlog period. The cost of the repair to me was $1, 119.95. This should not have occurred on this truck that had less than 40,000 miles.
On 10/07/2022, I took the vehicle VIN number in reference for tire change at FIRESTONE Auto Care (440 S. Main St., Wichita, KS 67202-3720 - [316] 265-6659]). I also requested, wheels alignment and wheels/tire balance, and brake inspection. Upon those inspections, the technicians pointed out an IMPORTANT issue as follows: "IMPORTANT: This vehicle may be subject to a recall involving the toe adjuster. Search the internet for 'recall number 19V-021' for the latest information Under no circumstances should a weld from a recall repair be removed for any reason, including to perform an alignment. Removing the weld would remove a safety recall remedy that is currently in place., which would cause a serious vehicle safety issue. To adjust toe on a vehicle with a welded drag link in the WinToe procedure, choose 'select steering type' on the second tier of 'k-keys. Then, select the 'one tie rod' option. For more information, please reference TSB 19-001-19." The vehicle in reference has been mostly serviced at Davis-Moore (7675 E. Kellogg, Wichita, KS 67207 [316] 618-2268). This is the first time I took this vehicle to FIRESTONE who pointed out the above information. Please, let me know if this is a safety issue and, if it is, please take the necessary steps to enforce a solution to that issue. Thank you.
The ABS control module has begun failing sporadically while the vehicle is running. When this happens is disables the traction control system and the ABS system until the alarm clears, and if the vehicles cruise control is on, it immediately disengages. All of these symptoms deteriorate the safety margin of the vehicle, and cause mid-driving malfunctions that can be unpredictable. When the module is malfunctions both the ABS warning light and TCS warning light are illuminated and a text warning is displayed on the multifunction display of the gauge cluster. The contact found that the parts to rectify this issue are being rationed by Stellantis, leading to unacceptable lead times in simply procuring the parts. When added to the shop rates charged to fix this issue, the price of replacing this clearly defective component begins to total in the thousands of dollars. Therefore, in order to continue his profession and responsibly take care of my liabilities, operating a four-ton vehicle with a compromised braking system and have done so for two years now. In addition, the ABS Malfunction Indicator chimes repeatedly while driving, creating an endlessly distracting environment.
The "service electrical brake system" and "service abs system" lights / warnings have been intermittently going on and off. This also does not allow the cruise control to work. The alerts can range from once every couple of days to repeatedly going off non-stop during my drive. Issue started around Oct of 2022. Warnings will stop for several months then return.
Service Antilock Brake System Service Electronic Braking System Illuminated warning lamps. Impacts Braking and cruise control. Started 10/2022, and appears to trigger randomly and frequently.
While driving, a warning message appeared "service electric brake system". Taken to dealer. "Found, hydraulic control unit to be faulty." Need to replace unit. Correction determined "ABS SYSTEM ANDSTABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM IS COMPROMISED. SUGGEST NOT DRIVING THIS VEHICLE UNTIL PARTS ARE AVAILABLE AND INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. " I was informed by the dealer the party's are restricted and cannot be ordered until January 2023 and then there is no guarantee they will be shipped. I contacted Ram service and was informed the parts did not exist and needed to be manufactured. I inquired how this could happen with only 28411 miles (less when detected) and if there was a recall. I was shocked a safety part like this that prevents the vehicle from being driven was not covered under recall. There was no offer to assist with providing transportation for me while I await for repair.
ABS Module and HCU bad with 40K miles, a WELL KNOWN ram issue that they continue to ignore and take thousands of Additional dollars out of consumers pockets as they seem to go bad JUST after the basic warranty expires. 70 thousand dollar truck that is garbage, and Ram won’t remedy this problem. Second power wagon I’ve owned, same issue, similar mileage.
The anti lock brake system frequently turns off and activates warning lights for it. Since the truck is used to pull loaded trailers I feel this is a safety issue since you can not depend on the brake system to function as abs or it suddenly fails and goes to manual only. Repair facility said code calls for the abs pump to be replaced but the part isn't available due to a back order of almost 800 units as of November 2022.
Abs control module failed at 4,000 miles on 2018 ram 2500 causing traction control and anti lock brakes to be disabled and warning lights to turn on.
At 9955 miles, the WARNING CHIMES were activated on this vehicle, and the error message on the dash indicated 'ABS FAILURE' and/or 'SERVICE ABS SYSTEM'. I checked the OBDII codes and saw code C0020, 'ABS pump failure and/or Hydraulic Control Unit Failure'. Took vehicle to the stealership, who also checked the OBDII scan and replaced both the pump and the HCU with the SAME SUBSTANDARD COMPONENTS that were previously used. Less than 6000 miles later, the SAME PROBLEM BEGAN OCCURRING AGAIN, along with the SAME OBDII failure code. Took vehicle back to stealership, who confirmed that this was the SAME PROBLEM that occurred at 9955 miles, but that they couldn't order the 'new and improved' parts from FCA until Jan, 2023. Returned to stealership in March, 2023, and was told these ABS parts were now on backorder. Filed a complaint with FCA Customer Care, who then sent the 'backordered' parts to the stealership two weeks later. The stealership WILL NOT INSTALL THE PARTS UNLESS I PAY FOR THE PARTS AND LABOR in spite of a RAM TSB describing this failure and a Texas class action lawsuit against FCA for failing to address these ABS safety problems affecting thousands of RAM HD truck owners. FCA still has not issued a recall on the faulty ABS components. EVERY TIME THE ABS WARNING CHIME OCCURS (OFTEN EVERY 10-15 SECONDS), IT DISTRACTS THE DRIVER AND CANCELS THE CRUISE CONTROL, AND, OF COURSE, THE ABS SYSTEM STOPS FUNCTIONING.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the rear wheels would spin upon depression of the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that a warning chime would sound as the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred him to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle with a defective anti-lock brake system (ABS) and hydraulic control unit (HCU) that needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000. The contact stated that the necessary part for repair is on backorder. The vehicle slides in the rain and they are not confident in driving in the snow. The vehicle also cannot be used to tow a trailer now due to the trailer brakes not activating. The contact provided the repair in which FCA paid half of the repairs for the vehicle minus the amount for the diagnostic fee.
Flashing abs and traction control no cruise control Code C0020-02
The ABS/Electronic Braking system failed before the truck even hit 50K miles, but I haven't been able to get a replacement module and have been told that these items are on back-order until an indeterminate time. However, the Electronic Braking System and ABS warning lights go off on my truck daily, especially if I drive over any rough roads or bumps. I've been having trouble getting my truck inspected because these parts can't get replaced. I've also noticed that the cruise control system on the RAM 2500 doesn't work sometimes and sometimes it comes on but it doesn't want to switch off when you hit the brakes, so I had to stop using it for fear it wouldn't turn off at all at some point.
Service Electronic Braking System and Service ABS system lights are flashing intermittently and the ABS and traction control lights are on. Dealer has indicated the hydraulic control unit is bad and needs replaced but they no longer manufacture that part and there are no aftermarket offerings so vehicle cannot be repaired until parts are located. In the meantime these vehicles affected have no anti-lock brakes and the cruise control randomly shuts off if the ABS light flashes while cruise is enabled.
Anti-Lock Brake system intermittently goes in and out, multiple times per trip. Constant warning chimes are distracting, random disengagement of cruise control without warning, and locking up of brakes. System is not operational and dangerous to operate on the roadway
ABS goes on and off continuously. Warning messages and beeps constantly. Started October of 2022. Independent service center has been trying to get a replacement nodule from the manufacture for all most a year.
My ABS and HCU are throwing codes and my local RAM dealership says this is a common issue. I went in October 2022 and they said at that time parts weren't coming in until February 2023. I called today and they can't say a date. I've read mainly articles online and this seems common. My truck is a 2018 and just went over 50,000 miles when this started occurring. My dealership won't state if this is covered under warranty, I believe this should be under drivetrain. Feel free to call me [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
ABS brake control module fails. Causes system to lose abs, traction control and cruise control. I have had two units fail in 2 years.
The notification on the dash reads “Service Electronic Brake System” The truck makes a constant dinging sound while the truck is in motion. My mechanic ordered the brake control module back in October 2022 and the part is still on backorder.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that the ABS warning light intermittently illuminated while driving at various speeds, followed by an audible chime. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that the hydraulic control unit (HCU) needed to be replaced. The contact agreed to have to replace the part; however, he was informed that the part was on backorder. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 34,000. The contact stated that the dealer still does not know when the item will be available.
My and many other Ram 2500s have a TRACTION CONTROL & ABS unit failures. (HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT) Dealerships across the country have no replacement parts and if they do, it cost upwards of $1,000 and in a lot of cases it will fail again. For the safety of our roadways, Ram needs to be put out a recall for this failure.
The ABS and Traction Control lights constantly come on, even after replacement HCU and ABS parts are replaced. It’s a once a year fix, and should be recalled. Once the lights come on, braking is affected, and cruise control no longer functions. I used a previous date, because I need to replace the parts again, for the third time. I have asked Ram support to just send me the parts, and I will do the repair, but unfortunately, they prefer that I continue to pay the dealer to repeat the same repair over and over.
abs system fail off and on which disengages the cruise control.
2018 Ram 2500. Trouble code for service electronic brake system, traction control deactivation, cruise control deactivation, ABS deactivation occurs at all speeds and all surfaces intermittently and the trouble code will activate and deactivate for up to approximately 45 minutes continuously . Ram certified dealership service departments in 2 states have declared it a known issue, have stated there is a TSB for repair but parts are unavailable with no ETA. Vehicle is under warranty but no remedy except to wait for parts which I have done for almost 1 year. Several other colleagues have the same issue which makes me concerned that probably 1 in every 3 2018 Ram 2500s are or will become safety concerns. It would be my intention to sell this unsafe vehicle as it is a primary means of transportation for my school aged children but no dealership will entertain a trade or severally reduces the trade in amount due to an issue that I can’t even through a factory warranty still being active have resolved. I have no other recourse at this time other than to advocate for individuals to sign up for the class action lawsuit against FCA which covers this exact issue which will hopefully force FCA to fix these unsafe vehicles before deaths or serious injury occur. Any help your organization could be would be appreciated as this is a glaring safety issue known by the manufacturer and these vehicles are used for towing.
Abs light is on. Needs an abs pump. The pumps are not available from Chrysler. This has been an issue on my truck since November 2022.
Service electronic braking system light and service abs system.
Anytime while driving the truck waring lights on the dashboard will come on intermittently. The ABS and traction control light will come on, and on the display screen two different messages will appear along with alarm sound constantly dinging. One message says (Service Electronic Braking System) the other says (Service Antilock Brake System). If driving with the cruise control on when those lights and messages appear the cruise will stop working. This problem is intermittent it comes and goes, but usually very often. The truck is out of warranty with 41000 miles on it and this has been happening since Sept. of 2022. I had it diagnosed by an independent garage and had two trouble codes (C0020-01 ABS Pump Motor Control General Electrical Failure) and (C0020-16 ABS Pump Motor Control Circuit Voltage Below Threshold). The truck still seems to stop normally, but I feel very unsafe driving it. The ABS Hydraulic Control unit is unavailable from the dealer. As of today Jan.-18 2023 they are saying it will not be available until March-15 2023. This is most definitely a safety issue on the truck which should be recalled. The dealer says the parts problem is a supplier issue. I believe the manufacturer knows these are defective and is trying to avoid recall.
My 2500 hydraulic control unit is causing light to constantly come on and go off causing cruise control and ABS lights. This is a rampant issue with the 17-18 year truck but no recall. The part is bad that cause the manufacturer to come out with a replacement part but still no recall and this is the second time it’s happened the first time it was under warranty. But not this time.
The HCU (hydraulic control unit), at approximately 70k miles, the service ABS light began to illuminate intermittently, after about 300 more road miles it would remain in constantly. At the same time, my ABS system and skid control was forcefully deactivated by the vehicle. Currently, I cannot use the full breaking capability of the vehicle or stabilization control. This vehicle is available for inspection. The problem is still present. My safety is greatly at risk when towing large loads. It is at risk during inclement weather where ABS is very important in maintaining traction. This problem has been confirmed and documented at the dealer. There was no prior warning before failure.
ABS and Traction control lights on for a know issue involving the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit) and ABS Module. My 3/4 ton truck has no ABS and no Traction control and I live in Michigan! It is dangerous and RAM has no answers for me as the parts are on back order and no real estimate of when they are available. This is frustrating to say the least. Especially when a quick internet search will show that 1000's upon 1000's of RAM owners are having the same issue. If this is a known problem, why is RAM not fixing it? Why did they continue to produce these trucks with a known safety issue? I ha e filed a case with RAM Cares and nothing is being done. I have been a faithful RAM/Dodge customer my whole life and I don't think RAM will be my next truck. This unresolved and potentially dangerous known issue has taken my loyalty away. This must get resolved! I have been fighting to try and get this fixed since September of 2022!!!! It is now March of 2023!!! I was unable to use my 2018 truck to drive in Michigan winter because it is unsafe to drive. If I get in an accident with my truck, with RAM knowing I have an issue and will not fix it, are they responsible for injury/loss of life/property damage??? My lawyer sure thinks so.
The ABS pump motor control unit failed. Part number 68143491-AA making the ABS safety feature unusable. This is a know and common problem with this vehicle.
ABS hydraulic control unit failure causing ABS system to deactivate.
The ABS system has been damaged since September 23, 2022 and I went to the dealer in West Palm Beach and the one in Ocala Fl and none of them have the part. And it's not just me, there are many people with the same problem.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the service ABS and service brake warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the speedometer failed and became inoperable. The contact was concerned for his safety while driving the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 50 MPH, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the ABS sensor had failed and replaced the ABS light. While driving approximately at55 MPH and decelerating, the contact applied the brake pedal but failed to respond. The vehicle was coasted to a stop. The vehicle was returned to the same dealer who had diagnosed that the calipers had failed. The brakes, brake pads, routers, and calibers were replaced. Approximately, 6 months later the contact noticed the vehicle failed to reverse. The vehicle app notes brake system failure, anti-brake system, ABS failure, and tire pressure failure warnings displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to confirm a diagnosis however had assumed the reverse piston rods may have failed. The contact was informed the repair may take up to 2 weeks due to limited parts. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,000.
ABS hydraulic assembly fails intermittently and randomly during driving causing the warning chime to sound repeatedly and results in distracted driving as well as degraded braking safety feature.
Def warning light comes on for no reason and derates your speed to 5mph while traveling on interstate pulling trailer. You have only 85 miles to get to a dealer to erase codes. This is a very unsafe computer programing setting that the EPA states must be done. Going 5mph while on interstate pulling trailer will cause numerous deaths and accidents. 85 miles in nothing when your out in the middle of nowhere.
The ABS and traction control service lights and alarm come on and off and shuts off cruise control. stops coming on for days at a time then happens again. Been told brakes could lock up and trailer brakes may not work
39,125 miles - 2018 RAM 2500 6.4L (purchased new in 2019), intermittent ABS / traction control light and alarm dinging! Dealership diagnosed it as the ABS / hydraulic control unit with code C0020-07. Many reports of this same issue can be found online from RAM owners having this exact issue, most are just out of the warranty. Low or backorder status of the replacement parts also suggests an issue. ABS function and cruise control are disabled when the error occurs and no way to know when or how long the issue and alarm dinging will last. This is a major safety problem that should be a recall.
ABS and Traction Control warning light keeps intermittently coming on and then a message saying that the Electric Brake system needs serviced. This has happened to my 2018 RAM at 17,000 miles. Dealer replaced ABS module under warranty and problem was solved. Now I am at 35,000 miles and the problem is back. Same exact issue. This needs to be a recall item ASAP and this seems to be a VERY common problem with these trucks. This could be very dangerous as these trucks are made for towing heavy loads and losing your anti-lock braking capabilities could be catastrophic to you or anyone else on the road.
The ABS, Service Electronic Brakes, and traction control warning alert constantly goes on and off while driving, deactivating cruise control as well. It does it all speeds, in all gears, including on the highway, at 70, in traffic. This is especially problematic in the rain, as I don't know if the ABS will work or not. The alert goes on, resets and goes off, then goes on, then resets, constantly. Sometimes for the duration of the trip, sometimes once or twice. This has been happening since September 2022, for eight months now. The anti-lock brakes or electronic brake system MAY NOT WORK; The problem has been confirmed by an independent service center; The vehicle has not been inspected outside the independent service center; No warning lamps or other symptoms prior to this failure.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the messages "ABS Braking" and "Speed Control Sensor" were displayed. Additionally, the message "See Your Dealer" was displayed the following day. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ABS module and the ABS pump needed to be replaced; however, the parts were not available. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was unsafe to drive, and the contact had stopped driving the vehicle. The contact stated that the parts had been on backorder for 9 months. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened; however, the manufacturer had not followed up with the contact. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the ABS and Traction Control System warning lights started flashing. Additionally, messages to service ABS and electronic braking system were flashing on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the ABS control module and the hydraulic control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure was intermittent but had since become constant. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
Issues with HCU/ABS system. Electronic braking system goes in and out intermittently rendering ABS/traction control inoperable. Existing known issue and original OEM HCU has been discontinued as a result.
